What is fishing in Colorado about?

Fishing in Colorado offers a diverse and exhilarating experience for both seasoned anglers and newcomers alike. With over 6,000 miles of streams and more than 2,000 lakes and reservoirs, the state boasts an abundance of fishing opportunities set against breathtaking mountain backdrops. Whether you prefer fly fishing in a babbling creek, casting for trout in a tranquil alpine lake, or angling for bass in a reservoir nestled among pine forests, Colorado has something to offer every fishing enthusiast. One of the highlights of fishing in Colorado is its incredible variety of fish species. From the prized rainbow and brown trout to kokanee salmon, walleye, and even trophy-sized pike, anglers can test their skills against a wide range of fish. The state’s clear, cold waters provide optimal conditions for these species to thrive, ensuring a rewarding experience for anyone with a rod and reel. Additionally, Colorado’s commitment to conservation and sustainable fishing practices helps maintain healthy fish populations and pristine aquatic environments. Beyond the thrill of the catch, fishing in Colorado is a chance to immerse oneself in the state’s natural beauty and serene landscapes. Whether you’re wading in a mountain stream, watching the sunrise over a glassy lake, or sharing stories around a campfire after a day on the water, the experience fosters a deep connection with nature and a sense of tranquility that draws anglers back year after year. Whether you’re a solitary angler seeking solitude or a family looking to bond over a shared outdoor activity, Colorado’s fishing destinations offer something unforgettable for everyone who casts a line into its waters.

What are the most popular months to go fishing in Colorado?

Fishing seasons in Colorado are as diverse as the landscape itself, offering different opportunities throughout the year for anglers to pursue their favorite catch. Spring marks the beginning of the fishing season in many parts of the state, as rivers and streams swell with runoff from melting snow, creating ideal conditions for trout fishing. This time of year also sees the emergence of aquatic insects, sparking lively hatches that lure fish to the surface and excite fly fishermen. As summer rolls in, high-elevation lakes and reservoirs become more accessible, offering anglers a chance to target species like trout, bass, and kokanee salmon. Warmer temperatures bring increased activity among fish populations, making early mornings and late evenings prime times for casting lines. Summer also offers opportunities for family fishing outings and camping trips, as many of Colorado’s lakes and rivers are surrounded by scenic campgrounds and hiking trails. Come fall, Colorado’s fishing season enters its golden period. As temperatures cool, trout become more active and aggressive, feeding voraciously to prepare for the winter months ahead. Anglers can enjoy vibrant autumn foliage reflected on the water’s surface while casting for trophy trout in rivers such as the Arkansas and South Platte. Fall is also a favorite time for fly fishing enthusiasts, as cooler weather brings about prolific insect hatches and increased fish activity. Whether you prefer the challenge of stream fishing in the high country or the tranquility of a quiet lakeside retreat, Colorado’s fishing seasons offer something special for every angler to savor.

What types of fishing are popular in Colorado?

Fishing in Colorado encompasses a variety of types and techniques, catering to different preferences and skill levels among anglers. One of the most popular methods is fly fishing, particularly renowned in Colorado for its world-class trout streams. Anglers use lightweight rods and artificial flies to mimic insects or small fish, presenting their offering delicately to the fish. This technique requires skill in casting and understanding of aquatic insect behavior, making it a favorite among those who enjoy the artistry and challenge of fishing. For those who prefer a more relaxed approach, bait fishing is another widely practiced method in Colorado. This technique involves using natural or artificial baits such as worms, minnows, or prepared dough baits to attract fish. Bait fishing is accessible to beginners and families alike, providing a straightforward way to enjoy the serene lakes and reservoirs scattered throughout the state. Many of these waters are stocked regularly with trout, bass, and other species, ensuring ample opportunities for a successful day on the water. Another exciting option in Colorado is spin fishing, which involves using spinning rods and reels with lures such as spoons, spinners, and plugs. Spin fishing allows anglers to cover a lot of water quickly and is effective for targeting a wide range of fish species, including trout, bass, pike, and walleye. This versatile technique can be adapted to various environments, from mountain streams to expansive reservoirs, offering anglers the flexibility to explore different fishing grounds and adapt to changing conditions throughout the seasons.

What species are popular for fishing in Colorado?

When fishing in Colorado, anglers have a diverse array of species to target depending on the region and type of water they choose to fish. One of the most sought-after species is trout, particularly rainbow and brown trout, which thrive in Colorado's cold, clear mountain streams and rivers. These trout are known for their fighting spirit and can be caught using a variety of techniques such as fly fishing with dry flies or nymphs, as well as spin fishing with small lures. Streams like the Arkansas River and the South Platte River are renowned for their trout populations and draw anglers from around the world. In addition to trout, Colorado offers opportunities to catch other freshwater species such as kokanee salmon, which are landlocked sockeye salmon found in several reservoirs across the state. Kokanee are prized for their vibrant red coloration and firm flesh, making them a favorite target during their spawning runs in the fall. Anglers can target kokanee using downriggers, trolling spoons, or jigging techniques, especially in reservoirs like Blue Mesa, Dillon, and Taylor Park. For those looking for larger game fish, Colorado's reservoirs and lakes are home to species like walleye, bass, and northern pike. These predatory fish provide exciting action for anglers using techniques such as casting crankbaits, jigging with soft plastics, or trolling with live bait. Places like Cherry Creek Reservoir, Boyd Lake, and Spinney Mountain Reservoir are popular destinations for catching these species, offering both recreational fishing opportunities and the chance to hook into trophy-sized fish. Whether you're after trout in a mountain stream or battling a pike in a reservoir, Colorado's diverse fishery ensures there's something for every angler to pursue and enjoy.

What are the best places to fish in Colorado?

Colorado boasts a wealth of spectacular fishing destinations, each offering unique experiences and opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. Among the top-rated spots is the Gunnison River, known for its Gold Medal waters where trophy-sized rainbow and brown trout thrive. Anglers flock to this iconic river for its challenging currents and breathtaking scenery, making it a prime destination for fly fishing enthusiasts seeking a memorable adventure amidst the rugged beauty of the Gunnison Gorge. Another renowned location is the Fryingpan River, celebrated for its consistent hatches of aquatic insects and large population of wild trout. Situated near Basalt and easily accessible from Aspen, the Fryingpan River is famous among fly fishermen for its technical fishing conditions and the chance to hook into feisty rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. The serene surroundings and clear, cold waters add to the allure of this picturesque river, drawing anglers year-round. For those seeking a high-altitude fishing experience, the San Juan Mountains offer pristine alpine lakes and streams teeming with trout. Places like the Animas River, located near Durango, and high-country lakes in the Weminuche Wilderness provide solitude and the opportunity to catch native Colorado cutthroat trout in a remote and stunningly beautiful setting. Whether you're casting from the banks of a rushing river or fly fishing in a tranquil mountain lake, Colorado's diverse fishing destinations promise adventure, tranquility, and the chance to reel in memories that last a lifetime.

We’ll provide the meals and gear, you just bring that fishing license and a sleeping bag (we can also provide you with one for a small fee)! What Our Clients Are Saying

Guided fly fishing testimonials.

“Our guide hiked us into a beautiful creek where I learned the practical and patient practice of high sticking. I landed 12-15 wild brown, rainbow, and brook trout within a few hours. It was an extremely rewarding day. Our guide did an extraordinary job of speaking and instructing to our level.“

"Definitely worth it! I took my two younger kids out to get them some real life experience away from their video games and they had such a good time that the 9 year old wants to have his birthday party there next year.... The weather was perfect and the fishing was surreal. The gear they got to use was really nice (nicer than mine, i went shopping when i got home), and the instruction they got was really good. we mainly caught brooks and a couple browns. Looking forward to our next trip."

“It is always a good time fishing in the mountains – whether you catch a fish or not! Luckily with the guides there is a very good chance you will get a fish along with the unforgettable journey and views along the way. Never a bad day by the river!”

"This was a dream come true for me! As a first time female fly angler, I was a little nervous about what to expect. Booking the trip was easy. I got confirmation emails and reminders. They were friendly and helpful when I booked the trip. I couldn’t have picked a better guide than Amy. She was so easy to be around, taught me a lot, and put me on the fish! We had a blast. I highly recommend her and Telluride Fly Fishers."

"My husband and I went fly fishing with Goose today. I had never been although my husband has, and we both had a phenomenal experience. Next time we would love to bring our kids. Goose was a knowledgeable, thoughtful, and fun guide and he took us to the most majestic spots. We recommend, wholeheartedly."

Comfortable socks such as hiking socks. Long pants that would be comfortable under waders. Rain gear, a hat, sunglasses (Polarized lenses are a necessity on the water) Appropriate colder weather layers. Prepare for inclement and or buggy weather.

A small pack including: water, a hat, sunglasses, snacks, your rain coat, layers and bug spray. And especially a fish’s mentality.

You can purchase fishing licenses through the Colorado Division of Wildlife at Colorado Parks & Wildlife .

Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult on fly fishing trips. If the adult accompanying the child does not want to fish they can ride along and will not be charged.

Gratuity is based on the quality of service. Gratuity is welcomed but not required.  It says to the guide that you appreciate the great job they did.

Drive times to the fishing areas vary from 15 minutes to 45 minutes.

Trips are customized to the client with access to the San Miguel River, Dolores River, their tributaries, alpine lakes, as well as hiking to mountain streams. Where we fish depends on weather, conditions, customer requests, and what water is fishing most productively.

The guide provides transportation, terminal tackle, flies, and leaders.

Our mountain weather is ever-changing. In the summertime expect cooler mornings, warmer days, and cooler evenings. We often experience afternoon thunderstorms during the summer months of July and August.

Colorado Fly Fishing Trips

Colorado fly fishing experience.

Vail and Beaver Creek aren’t only unique for the great skiing and other outdoor activities, but we are also a world class Fly-fishing destination.

A boy and his fly fishing guide feel excited because they caught a fish, and the boy holds it in a fishing net

They are uniquely situated in the heart of some of the most diverse and quality Trout waters in Colorado. From the legendary Colorado river headwaters, Eagle River, Roaring Fork River, to two of the state’s most famous tailwaters, the Frying Pan and Blue rivers. There are numerous small creek gems and picturesque high mountain lakes that are easily accessible as well.

Most of us who guide got started by fishing with a parent or relative who was patient enough to instill the passion that we are now passing onto our children and grandchildren. One of the best things about Fly-fishing is that it’s a family activity that everyone can enjoy regardless of skill or knowledge. It’s not about strength or power.

We use FlyBook for our reservations system. You can book your trip right now and receive confirmation via email. You will need to create a simple profile to complete your reservation. Once completed you will be able to easily communicate directly with the shop regarding your specific reservation. It’s really easy to make changes, guide requests, or address dietary concerns. This web-based system makes booking your trip paperless and seamless.

All reservations made within 30 days are charged the trip cost at the time of booking. All trip reservations made outside of 30 days require a 50% deposit. Any cancellations made within 72 hours of departure time will be charged 50%. Same-day cancellations will result in a 100% charge.

Trout fishing in the heart of ski country is a true four-season sport, which means you can book Colorado fly fishing trips any time of the year. Winter fishing in Colorado can be very productive. Here in the high country, our geography allows for us to travel just a few miles down the valley to milder conditions and great fishing. As local anglers, we live to ski/ride in the mornings and fish in the afternoons.

Experienced Guides

colorado guided fishing trips

Since 1992, we have been serving the Vail, Colorado area. We are a locally owned and operated, year-round, Orvis endorsed guide service and retail location in Avon (next to Agave). We are a two-time winner of the Orvis Endorsed Outfitter of the Year. Easily said, when it comes to Colorado fly fishing, we’re the guides you want. We are so incredibly fortunate to have by far the Vail valley’s most experienced guides staff. With over 300 years of combined experience on local waters, we can assure you that these guys know the hidden pools and secluded riffles. As Orvis endorsed guides, we hold our staff to a higher standard than the Orvis company expects for our guests. In fact, we pretty much wrote the book on what it takes to be an Orvis guide. All new guides, regardless of fishing ability, must complete a 5-day training curriculum before we will hire them.

Live the Outdoors

Being out in nature is the real benefit of spending a day on the water with our guides. Immersing yourself in the beauty and tranquility of the Colorado mountains is what makes going to work for us the best job in the world, Eagles, Osprey, Otters, Beavers, Moose, and the occasional Black Bear are just some of the wildlife you may encounter on the river. It was once said to one of our guides by a very prominent Psychiatrist a few years back, “If everyone Fly-fished I would be out of a job.”

Fly Fishing Trips for all Occasions

From 1-500, we have guided them all. We offer a wide range of guided Fly-fishing trips that can be tailored to your specific needs or desires. All trips are trips only yourself or your group and your own guide(s). We do not combine different groups. We have trips that are better suited to beginners all the way to the advanced angler. Family Fly-fishing trips are very popular too. Thinking of doing a team-building or large corporate outing we have the expertise to make it happen. We have developed a program where we can take care of just about everything in advance, so your group can maximize their time on the water. We are also your specialists when it comes to a Bachelor/wedding Fly-fishing trip.

Reservations/Cancellations Policy:

All reservations made within 60 days are charged the trip cost at the time of booking. All trip reservations made outside of 60 days require a 50% deposit. Any cancellations made within 72 hours of departure time will be charged 50%. Same-day cancellations will result in a 100% charge. Two men holds a Cutthroat Trout caught in Rocky Mountain National Park

Colorado among top destinations for whitewater rafting. Here are 5 favorite spots

colorado guided fishing trips

Colorado is among the country's top rafting destinations.

The state has roughly 20 whitewater rivers, and commercial rafting companies saw nearly 550,000 user days in 2022, according to the Colorado River Outfitters Association, which represents about 45 outfitters.

This rafting season looks to be a long, steady ride with all eight of Colorado's river basins having snowpack that exceeded 100% of average and a mild May that allowed for a slow snowpack release.

The Colorado rafting season generally runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with June producing bigger water that mellows as the season progresses.

Colorado also is home to two of the top 10 river rafting tours in the country, including No. 1 in Mild to Wild Rafting & Jeep Tours from Durango, named in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards this year.

More: Colorado tour companies earn top spots in USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards

Here is a look at five favorite rafting areas in Colorado:

For details about each and the commercial outfitters permitted to run them, visit the Colorado River Outfitters Association site .

Arkansas River ranks among best rafting rivers in the country

The Arkansas has it all, which is why it accounts for about half of all commercial rafting days in Colorado.

The main rafting area is located about three hours southwest of Denver.

The Browns Canyon and The Numbers sections offer some of Colorado's most thrilling rapids and stunning beauty.

The Browns Canyon section takes rafters through Browns Canyon National Monument's sheer cliffs between Salida and Buena Vista. The Numbers section includes a series of seven challenging and exhilarating Class III and IV rapids.

Bighorn Sheep Canyon and Royal Gorge stretches offer similar mixes of rapids and scenery.

Poudre River offers everything from rugged rapids to friendly floats

The Poudre River northwest of Fort Collins sees around 33,000 commercial rafting days a year. It also is enjoyed by many private rafters and kayakers.

It offers Class II to IV rapids and is located in the picturesque Poudre Canyon. The river is Colorado's first and only federally designated National Wild and Scenic River.

It's easily accessible from Fort Collins and Colorado Highway 14, which runs next to the river. Ample put-ins and take-outs are available along the highway.

Colorado River offers canyons, rapids and floats

The Colorado River is broken into two parts, the upper and lower sections. The two combined account for more than 100,000 commercial rafting days but are very different.

The upper section draws about two-thirds of those visitors enticed by big rapids, some reaching Class V, tucked in a 10-mile stretch of the remote Gore Canyon. This stretch is done out of Kremmling or State Bridge, about 100 miles west and north of Denver.

The Little Gore Canyon stretch southwest of Kremmling is much tamer while still offering that feeling of remoteness.

Rafting the river through 16-mile-long Glenwood Canyon offers a different experience. Rapids are plentiful and enjoyable but less challenging than the upper section and less remote, as Interstate 70 is your companion.

This is an excellent family-friendly stretch because of its rapids and access from tourist-friendly Glenwood Springs, which is about 157 miles west of Denver.

From our 2023 coverage: Here's how to stay safe rafting or tubing

Clear Creek rafting offers whitewater fun close to Denver

Clear Creek sees around 80,000 commercial rafting days per year.

The lower stretch is one of the most easily accessed from Denver, yet still offers plenty of scenery.

The Upper Clear Creek section near Bond is about 130 miles from Denver but offers more advanced rapids in a remote setting.

The lower Clear Creek section from Lawson to Idaho Springs is much tamer but with enough rapids action to keep things interesting and much closer to Denver, with Idaho Springs about 30 miles west on I-70.

Yampa/Green rivers offer the ultimate epic overnight rafting trip

These two rivers meet in the remote northwest corner of Colorado and make for an excellent multiday trip.

The free-flowing Yampa River runs west through Steamboat Springs and joins up with the Green River 50 miles downriver.

These rivers take you through the Gates of Lodore in Dinosaur National Monument and Desolation Canyon, finishing on the Green River in northern Utah. Along the way, you will see interesting geological formations, Native American rock carvings and sandy spots for overnight camping.

This section offers mostly Class II and IV rapids.
