The Blue Cave , also called the Blue Grotto, is a famous natural wonder in Croatia. Inside, the cave glows with a beautiful blue light, creating a magical atmosphere. It’s truly breathtaking and hard to put into words.

There are plenty of boat tours from Hvar to choose from. Here are my top picks for incredible Hvar boat trips to the Blue Cave.

The highlight of this boat tour is visiting the mesmerizing Blue Cave. On the way, you’ll explore other beautiful coves, beaches, and bays like the Green Cave and Stiniva Cove.

Just a quick boat ride from Hvar town lies the Pakleni Islands. Despite their name, which translates to Hell Islands, they’re nothing short of paradise. A day trip to this stunning archipelago is a must-do while in Hvar!

A great way to see the Pakleni archipelago and the waters surrounding Hvar is by kayak. You get plenty of time for swimming, snorkeling, and even grabbing a coffee at one of the beach bars in Zdrilca Bay on Pakleni Islands.

I love that this kayak tour from Hvar follows a loop route so you get to see so much more than if the return was the same way. 

Ivan and the other guides are friendly and easygoing making the kayaking pleasant no matter your level. The kayaks are also good quality and you get a proper safety briefing before the tour.

I’ve already mentioned this tour above but if you want to visit several islands, this 5 island tour really is a great option.

Explore the Blue Cave on Bisevo, unwind at Stiniva Cove on Vis Island, and discover the Green Cave of Budikovac Island. Dive into the crystal-clear waters near Ravnik islet and cap off your day with a delectable lunch on the Pakleni islands. You’ll get to visit the renowned Palmizana beach with its array of bars and eateries.

Pack some snacks to keep hunger at bay, as lunchtime comes fashionably late in the day. And fear not, with skippers Bozo and Tony at the helm, you’re in for a journey filled with laughter and enlightenment.

Hvar is home to the UNESCO-listed Stari Grad plains where you’ll find olive groves, lavender fields, and vineyards. Given Hvar’s most famous local wine is named Bogdanuša, which means Given by God, there is no doubt a wine tasting is a must.

Going on a wine tasting tour is a lovely way to learn more about the local wines in Hvar. This tour takes you to the Tomic winery in Vrboska or the Dubokovic winery in Jelsa where you get an insight into the wine production and the grapes they grow.

At the winery, you will get to sample some of their best wines in one of the wine cellars accompanied by bread and olive oil.

The highlight of this tour (besides the wine, of course!) is the drive across the island to and from the winery. You’ll even get to stop at Napoleon Fort to take in the views over Pakleni Islands on one side and the Kabal Peninsula on the other. 

The guides are knowledgeable and eager to share information about the island and places you drive by, so this is a great opportunity to learn more about Hvar and the culture from a local’s perspective.

If you like to fit a little adventure into your vacation, this section is for you. From cycling to kayaking, there are so many wonderful ways to explore Hvar while staying active. Here are the best adventure tours of Hvar.

Exploring the island by e-bike gives you so much freedom to see parts of the island you otherwise wouldn’t. Hvar is hilly, so getting the support of an e-bike ensures you get around even if you aren’t used to biking.

When you pick up your e-bike, you get a map with points of interest to follow so you easily find the hidden gems of Hvar like Velo Grablje. 

Make sure you bring swimwear for the beach stops and cash to grab a drink or a bite to eat during your excursion. In summer double down on sun protection and bring plenty of water, things tend to heat up fast!

Jure and the staff at Antonio rent will give you plenty of tips before your ride, but if you prefer the convenience of a guided e-bike adventure, book this guided bike tour .

Cycling around Hvar with a local gu ide is one of the best ways to see the island at a slow pace. As opposed to the e-bike tour above, this is by push bike and there is no cheating when going uphill!

You will explore hidden gems and learn about history from a local’s point of view as you cover the northern part of Hvar with your guide.

The guides, including Grgo, make you feel like family and the ride is relaxed and friendly. Grgo and his family also run the winery where you will end the tour and sample some of their wines.

Renting a quad is a great way to see the less touristy parts of Hvar island and you get to access places that are not reachable by car.

I highly recommend going to the Kabal Peninsula which is one of the most underrated places in Hvar. Covered in pine forest and home to some of the most breathtaking coves and beaches it is almost unbelievable that there aren’t more people there.

With a quad, you can easily get to beautiful Hvar beaches at the end of dodgy roads, like Gromin Dolac and Lucisca.

Before you start you will get a proper walk-through of how to operate the ATV, so even if it is your first time quad biking, you will feel safe. And they also provide a map of sights to see. But if you ask me, just head off to the Kabal Peninsula. 

Best day trips from Split to Hvar

If you are based in Split, your itinerary should include a day trip to Hvar and surrounding islands.

The crystal-clear water dotted with picturesque islands can easily turn a boat trip from Split to Hvar and the Pakleni Islands into your best memory from Croatia. Here are the best Hvar tours from Split.

You’ll get to visit several islands like Hvar, Brac, Pakleni, and Solta. You’ll stop for swimming and snorkeling in secluded bays along the way and even a guided tour of Hvar Town.

Getting to Hvar, Croatia

There is no commercial airport on Hvar and in order to reach the island you’ll have to take a boat or a ferry from Split, Drvenik or one of the surrounding islands.

Most visitors come to Hvar from Split, and if that’s the case with you, make sure to check out my Split itinerary to make the most of your time in Split Old Town and its surroundings.

There are two ferry lines connecting Hvar to the mainland; Split – Stari Grad and Drvenik – Sucuraj. While you can usually just rock up at the port and get a ferry ticket there, in high season it’s better to book it ahead of time.

Book your car ferry.

The passenger ferry is much faster than the ferry and it will drop you off in the centre of Hvar town. This is the best option if you do not have a car.

Getting around Hvar in Croatia

Hvar is almost 70 kilometres long and as soon as you venture past Jelsa the roads get narrower and windier. And parking is an issue in most of Croatia.

There is also plenty of places on Hvar that are only accessible over gravel or dirt roads. Most rental car companies won’t allow you on gravel or dirt roads and these are often the most beautiful places you won’t want to miss out on!

Despite exploring the island by car ourselves, this would not be our first choice if we had to rent one on the island. Some roads (if you’d like to explore deeper) are just too narrow for two way traffic and parking is an issue in most places in Croatia.

That being said, a lot of people explore the island by car since it’s cost effective and very easy to get it over by ferry and there certainly is something to be said about AC!

A scooter is a fabulous way to explore Hvar! It’s easy, affordable and the island is just small enough that you can get almost anywhere by scooter. OK, maybe not Sucuraj or you won’t be able to feel your ass by the end of it.

Navigating the narrow roads and parking is a lot easier when you have a scooter, just make sure you get one that’s strong enough to get you over the hills before you get old!

As we mentioned before, there’s plenty of gravel and dirt roads on Hvar d certain areas are better explored with a 4×4!

We’d recommend you rent an ATV for the Kabal Peninsula and to take the shortcut (past Zi’s favourite beach ) to Sveta Nedilja. On top of that you’ll be able to discover loads of other bays and beautiful viewpoints you can’t access otherwise.

There are several busses per day that connect the main towns and villages on Hvar island as well as water taxi services you can use.

The best time to visit Hvar is in the shoulder season which runs April till mid-June, and September to October. This is when the crowds are manageable, the weather is warm and pleasant, and the prices more affordable. If you visit in Autumn you’ll also have the benefit of the warmer sea.

Hvar claims it gets the most sunshine of all the islands and it is a popular summer holiday destination that becomes very crowded, loud, and expensive in the peak of season which is late June till the end of August.

As a rule of thumb, we would advise you to avoid Croatia in the peak of summer. It just gets too hot, too crowded, and too expensive. You’ll have a much better experience visiting in late spring or early Autumn.

During the winter months, Hvar is very quiet and most bars, restaurants and shops are closed.

Boat excursion, spend an all-day excursion by boat “joan” in local waters of the pakleni islands in front of town hvar..

The excursion includes sailing around the labyrinth of Pakleni islands with a stop at three locations: Mline bay for 30 min, Palmižana bay for 3 hours (where you can enjoy lunch), and St Clement for 1 hour. Enjoy the boat ride, explore the islands, beautiful nature, swim, walk or just rest and relax.

You can choose between a fish and chicken menu on the boat, you can pack your own lunch, or visit some of the restaurants in Palmižana for a tasty meal.

Pakleni islands

The Pakleni or Paklinski islands (about twenty islets) are located right opposite the town of Hvar. The name of this tiny archipelago comes from the word “paklina”, which is the pine resin once used to coat ships. The chain of islands is approximately 10 kilometres long, formed of limestone. This archipelago is the most beautiful part of the Hvar Riviera and features numerous bathing spots and a myriad of small, secluded bays with crystal clear sea.

The boat ``Joan``

The traditional cruising ship “Joan” is 17.5m long and 5 m wide with a capacity of 80 people on two decks. The upper deck is open and perfect for enjoying some sunbathing, while the first deck is covered and provides shade when you need it. In the case of bad weather, the first deck is also equipped with a plastic awning. The vessel is equipped with all the necessary safety, navigation and other equipment for a safe and comfortable journey at sea.

10:30 Start from Hvar

We are accommodating into a RIB speed boat and heading towards island Vis.

11:00 - 11:30 Swim in Green Cave

Our 1st stop is the Green cave situated on the island of Ravnik, near Vis. The emerald green color comes from the sun reflecting on the stones covered with seaweed at the bottom of the cave.

You can choose to enter the cave by swimming or with a small motor boat operated by Port Authority.

11:40 - 12:40 Snorkel in Stiniva

Stiniva is the most beautiful beach in Europe for 2016. We will anchor the boat near the entrance and you can enter Stiniva by swimming (20 m) or with a small rubber boat.

Stiniva is great for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing, or if you prefer you can have a drink and relax at the beach bar.

13:00 - 14:00 Experience Blue Cave

Magnificent Blue cave is a national natural wonder. Small motor boat of Port Authority will drive you to the entrance of the Blue cave which is quite small so you’ll have to bow your head while entering.

In the cave you will spend about 15 minutes and you are allowed to take pictures and videos to capture this natural phenomenon, blue reflecting sea and silver shine on the other objects.

14:20 - 15:00 Optional place

Depending on group preferences and weather conditions we are visiting one more optional place on island Vis: Green Lagoon on island Budikovac, Seal Monk's Cave, sandy beach Stončica, the smallest beach on Vis, town Vis, town Komiža or 2nd world war military submarine garage.

15:30 - 18:00 Relax in Palmižana

In Palmižana sandy beach on Pakleni islands you will have time for lunch in one of three great restaurants (Bacchuss, Totos & Zori), to drink some cocktails in popular Laganini beach bar or just to swim and sunbath.

You can also stay in the boat and listen to music or do a nice walk to the botanic garden.

18:30 Arrival in Hvar

Happy and tired we are slowly driving back to Hvar while sunset is starting to make beautiful ending of the day.

What makes this beach so remarkable is that every day it changes its shape with the wind and the tides!  Because of its wondrous shape, there’s always plenty of room to find your perfect spot for sunbathing spot – or if you like, rent an umbrella and your own beach lounge chair.  After soaking up the sun, behind the beach there is a deep pine forest waiting for you to enjoy the shade, a cool drink or a snack, as well as  places to change and toilet facilities. 

In addition to its famous beach, the picturesque harbor town of Bol is just a 15 minute stroll away, so why not enjoy wine tasting at the world-class Stina winery  right on the waterfront?.  

The island itself is a treasure trove of fascinating experiences …

You can visit the Pucisca stone-mason school (quarried since Roman times, Brac stone was even used on parts of the U.S. White House facade); Blaca Monastery, founded by Glagolitic monks in the 16thC, it’s an entire village carved out of stone ; or take a thrilling ride up to Vidova Gora which, at 825m, is  the highest peak on the Adriatic .  The views from here are staggering!

We are staying in Hvar for 4 nights. Is this the best use of our time? Or should I swap the pakleni boat day for bo or a full day at a beach club? We're traveling with teens and they'd be interested in some cliff jumping and hanging out at beach clubs.

Croatia’s “Sunny Island” - an expert guide to Hvar

They call Hvar the “sunny island”, and with good reason. This long thin island in Central Dalmatia officially gets the most hours of sunshine in Croatia – all the better to enjoy its rolling hills of lavender terraces, olive groves and vineyards basking in the Adriatic sun.

True to form, the skies are brilliantly blue after my 65-minute catamaran ride from Split to Hvar Town. The sun casts a warm glow on the creamy stone townhouses of the palm-lined Riva waterfront, a curtain-raiser to the main St Stephen’s Square. Already its café terraces are buzzing with people chatting over their morning coffee, while the 16th-century St Stephen’s Cathedral and its belltower provide a stately backdrop.

I wander through Groda, the narrow lanes north of the square that was home to Hvar’s nobility and is the site of the 16th-century Benedictine convent, whose nuns make the most exquisite lacework. Back in the square, I pop into Hvar’s bijou baroque theatre, the first public theatre in Europe – the first time nobles and commoners sat together to watch performances.

There’s more enchantment in store in the little lanes on the southern side of the square, where pint-sized shops, bars and apartments somehow squeeze into these historic houses. When I’m back on the Riva and its swish waterside restaurants and bars, I’m mesmerised by the intense turquoise of the sea dotted with tiny fishing boats as I walk to little Križa beach and the beautiful Franciscan monastery beside it.

I can see the pine-covered Pakleni Islands scattered ahead of me, but the best view of them – and the rest of Hvar Town – awaits when I reach the hilltop Fortica Fortress. This is where you get that classic view of Hvar’s terracotta rooftops framed by the deep blue Adriatic and the dark green Pakleni Islands. No matter how many times I see that vista, it never fails to entrance me.

Many visitors to the island don’t stray beyond Hvar Town, and they’re missing out. Take the scenic route via the village of Brusje through lavender fields built into stone terraces that give Hvar its heavenly scent. Then stop at Stari Grad, the island’s former capital that’s a more laid-back alternative to Hvar Town.

Tucked at the end of a long, deep harbour, Stari Grad is remarkably mellow despite it being a ferry port. Within the labyrinth of the old town’s narrow alleyways and stone houses, one building stands out. Built as the summer home of the Croatian poet Petar Hektorović, the Renaissance façade hides a tranquil garden in a cloister-like setting overlooking a pool. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Just beyond the town is Stari Grad Plain, a Unesco-listed network of olive groves and vineyards that was planted by the ancient Greeks. It’s a reminder – not that one is needed – of the superb wine that Hvar produces. Visit a winery for a tasting of robust plavac mali red or refreshing bogdanuša, an indigenous white grape whose name literally translates as “a gift from God”.

Where there’s wine there’s excellent food – especially the hearty cooking you get from farm restaurants in Hvar’s small villages. Look out for a konoba (a rustic tavern) that serves lamb, veal or octopus cooked for hours under a bell-shaped pot called a peka – the most succulent you can imagine.

You’ll find these restaurants on the roads leading to some of Hvar’s most appealing villages. Near neighbours Vrboska and Jelsa on the island’s northern side are favourites among families looking for relaxed village charm and plenty of beaches in pine-fringed coves. Just the place to unwind under the Dalmatian sun.
