• Scala del Bramante The spiral staircase is named after Italian Architect Donato Bramante. Bramante introduced Renaissance art to Northern Italy but most famously made the base design of St Peter's Basilica. The staircase was originally made in 1505 and allowed the Pope to ascend while still in his carriage.
• Niccolina Chapel One of the secret rooms of the Vatican Museum is the Niccolina Chapel, a small but gorgeous place which was the private chapel of a Pope of the XV century. Discover the amazing frescos that are seem to engulf the chapel, dating back six centuries!
• Sistine Chapel Definitely the most known work of art of all time, the frescoes by Michelangelo are considered the finest work of art ever created by Man. The iconic narration of the vault dedicaded to the Holy Creation and the Bible is a pendant of the huge wall scene (60 feet tall) just behind the altar: the “Last Judgment” with its 391 figures. The side walls welcomed Michelangelo’s creation with pre-existing stories of the Life of Jesus and Moses by Botticelli and the Renaissance masters. Despite the religious dedication, the meaning of the Sistine Chapel trascends the time and space of the Church and reveals its universal meaning for mankind.

• Even with your ‘Skip the Line’ ticket you are NOT exempt from the line (queue) for the Security Check. As you enter in the Museums all visitors and their bags have to be screened under metal detectors and to be checked by the Vatican guards.
• It is not possible to bring large bags or backpacks, as well as bulky bags, big umbrellas and selfie-sticks. All weapons, hazardous or flammable objects are strictly forbidden.
• Food and beverages are permitted but must be checked.
• Appropriate clothing is recommended, especially in high season when visiting some important holy sites, such as Basilicas and Churches. Shoulders and knees have to be covered (Sistine Chapel included).

Vatican Secret Rooms - Discover Amazing Hidden Places In The Vatican Museums!

Have you ever wondered what’s in the Vatican Secret Rooms?  

Not sure what I’m talking about? 

These are very special rooms, normally not open to visitors - but I'm going to tell you how to visit them!

Vatican Secret Rooms – a Special Way to visit the Vatican Museums 

The Vatican Museums contain one of the world’s largest collections of art.

And there is almost no way to see it all .

Certainly not during a typical visit there. 

In order to keep the crowds and tour groups flowing, there are several set routes you can follow. 

Whether you visit on your own or on a tour , you will go through some of the same rooms , like the Octagonal Courtyard, the Maps Galleries, the Candelabra Room, and of course, the Sistine Chapel at the end. 

If you go on your own, you can also choose to visit some other parts of the Vatican Museums , like the Etruscan wing, the Egyptian wing, the Pinacoteca, or the New Wing.

I love all of these sections.

Or if you're pressed for time, you could also take the fastest route to the Sistine Chapel , seeing the bare minimum and keeping your visit to under an hour.

But there are some Vatican Secret Rooms you cannot visit on your own.

You have to book a special tour to see them. 

What are the Vatican Secret Rooms? 

I’m guessing there are many rooms we don’t even know about inside the vast Vatican Museums.

But there are 3 that you can access if you plan and book ahead.

The 3 Vatican Secret Rooms you can see are:

The Bramante Staircase

• The Room of the Masks (also known as the Cabinet of the Masks)
• The Niccoline Chapel  (also known as the Chapel of Nicholas V)

In 1505, famed Renaissance architect Donato Bramante completed his design for a staircase that would connect the Belvedere Palace to the outside. 

The staircase was also a way for the Pope, his horse, and other pack animals to go up and down inside the palace. 

Long before the structure of DNA was discovered, Bramante came up with the idea of a double helix (although he was surely not the first.)

This would allow people (and animals) to ascend and descend without running into each other.

So, the staircase is really made up of two staircases, just like a DNA molecule.

Located in a square tower, the Bramante staircase,  Scala del Bramante in Italian, offers gorgeous sweeping views of Rome from the top. 

Just 3 years after its completion, in 1508, Michelangelo would begin using this staircase to access the Sistine Chapel he’d been ordered to paint.

When I visited this staircase the first time, I shut my eyes for a moment and pictured Michelangelo going up and down, tired from his work, yet committed, dedicated as he was to anything he did.

I could almost feel him there on the staircase with me.  

Today, many visitors to the Vatican Museums are familiar with a similar staircase , designed by Giuseppe Momo in 1932.

This staircase is based on Bramante’s original design and is also a double helix.

It’s the exit of the Vatican Museums (but not the entrance. In fact, when you descend this staircase, note that you will not see anyone on the other half, the up-side of this staircase.)

The Cabinet of the Masks

The Cabinet of the Masks, Gabinetto delle Maschere in Italian, is another one of the Vatican Secret Rooms not visitable on a normal entry or tour of the Vatican museums.

The Room of the Masks, also called the Cabinet of the Masks, is a small square room that's named for the tiny mosaic tiles in the floor, which came from Emperor Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli . 

The mosaics depict theater masks. 

It’s amazing to think how they would have gotten these mosaics from Tivoli to the Vatican! 

For me, one of the things that makes a visit to the Cabinet of the Masks so special is being able to enter, and pass through, the animal room , sometimes affectionately nicknamed “The Stone Zoo”.

Even the Animal Room offers a lot to see, including a gorgeous ancient Roman mosaic floor, showing scenes of foods the Romans ate. 

I love the carved animals even if some of the scenes are pretty violent. 

To get to the Hall of the Masks you get to pass through another hall containing gorgeous sculptures. 

The hall is noteworthy for its layout and sense of perspective space. 

There is also a wonderful sculpture of Ariadne sleeping, which is set in its own showcase with red background, providing even more drama for the piece. 

Once inside the Room of the Masks, there are some other fascinating things, such as the reproduction of the Three Graces, a statue of Aphrodite, and, most strangely, a chair used to determine the gender of a newly-elected pope.

Supposedly this is due to a (possibly untrue) story of a woman, Pope Joan, who fooled everyone into thinking she was a man, became pope, and was killed on the spot when she gave birth during a procession.

The Niccoline Chapel

The Niccoline Chapel ( Cappella Niccolina in Italian) is a chapel in the Apostilic Palace (where the Pope is supposed to live) inside Vatican City . 

The chapel is a small jewel, in part because of the stunning, well-preserved frescos by Fra Angelico (1447 – 1451.) 

Pope Nicholas V had it built for use as his private chapel.

The chapel is located in the Tower of Innocent III, which is the most ancient part of the Apostolic Palace .  

The wall paintings show images from the lives of two of the earliest Christian martyrs – Saint Stephen and Saint Laurence. 

Stephen was a Greek-speaking Jew who was stoned him to death for his teachings of Christianity. 

Laurence distributed alms to the poor from the Church’s treasure, and was martyred by being grilled (burned) to death. 

The frescoes by Fra Angelico are the only remaining works by the artist from his 5 years in papal service 1445 and 1449. 

Fra Angelico died in Rome and was buried in the church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva , where you can see his tombstone.

How can you book visits to these rooms? 

Booking via the vatican museums official website .

Usually the first thing I suggest when it comes to tours and tickets is to book directly with the entity in question (in this case, via the Vatican Museums website).

However, when it comes to these special rooms, booking on the Vatican website is not easy or straightforward.

When you visit the Vatican Museums ticketing page, you'll first have to select a date and number of people (you can modify both of these after you search if you need to.)

When you arrive at the search results page, click "show only bookable visits" to tighten up the options.

The Vatican Secret rooms are usually not visible on the first page as there are other ticket types that are more popular and more common.

Click "Show more visits" to see more options.

When you click that, you will see the different options. You can choose 1 – 2 hidden rooms to see on one visit, but not all 3 together. 

But here’s the kicker.

If you try to book this on the Vatican museums website, you will see that the cost is very high.

You will pay 300 Euros to see just one room, plus 180 Euros for a Vatican guide, plus your entry ticket to the museums, 21 Euros (17 Euros plus the booking fee.)

If you choose two rooms, the price goes to 500 Euros , plus 180 Euros for the guide, plus 21 Euros per person to enter. 

Granted, if you have several people going, that price per person becomes more manageable.

Even with 2 people, the price per person comes down considerably.

This might be a good way to go if you have a small group.

If there are 5 of you booking to see one room, you’d pay 300 Euros + 180 Euros, divided by 5, so 96 Euros per person, plus 21 Euros per person to enter the museums.

So for 5 people to see one room will cost 117 Euros per person.

In my opinion, booking via the Vatican Website is not an easy way to see one of the Vatican Secret Rooms, especially if you are 1-2 people.

Booking Vatican Secret Rooms with a Tour Agency 

It turns out that a few of Rome's best tour companies offer tours that allow you to see one or more of these secret rooms.

The price varies depending on what else is included with the tour.

I've been to the Vatican Museums often and have taken a lot of tours there.

It's already one of my favorite places to visit in Rome.

But seeing these hidden rooms is really the cherry on top.

I've been able to see these rooms on different tours and it's an amazing feeling.

Besides the beauty of the room you are seeing, there is also the sense of getting in on a secret that most visitors will never even know about, let alone see.

One of my favorite tours ever is the Key Master Tour - Waking up the Vatican Museums .

This tour is exclusive because unlike the early-bird tours that give you access to the Sistine Chapel “before the crowds come in”, this tour really is the only one going at that hour (it starts at 6 AM.)

So we were the only group in the Sistine Chapel after we literally opened its doors and turned on the lights.

They had us leave around 7:30 AM when the other (many) "early-bird" tours would start streaming in.

On this tour, we were able to visit the Bramante staircase, AND get to see the sun rise from there.

There are several other tour agencies that offer tours that allow you access to one or more of these hidden rooms.

Not all of them offer you the experience of seeing the Sistine Chapel alone.

If you walked into this library, located inside a property in West Des Moines , Iowa, you'd never know there was a secret hideout room located behind one of the bookcases. But what could be inside?

Head through the door and you'll find a secretive storage room, complete with the ultimate kid's play den. The space boasts a cute faux house, where the owners' children no doubt spent a lot of time playing their favorite games.

Hidden Harry Potter nook

This unassuming living room can be found in a property in Attwood , a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Described as an "entertainer’s dream house" by Realtor , this property in Queen Creek, Arizona, has everything you could need and then some. The 3,350-square-foot residence features all the standard rooms; a kitchen, numerous bedrooms, and a lounge. But there are also plenty of cool secret rooms, too.

From a hidden lofted hangout that lies at the top of a spiral staircase and through a tiny door, to a random tunnel that leads to a secret swing room, the pad is almost too whimsical to be true. Can you spot the entrance to the hidden room?

That's right, the corner shelving unit inside the plush games room is actually a secure door, which leads to a secret safe room. Should any unwanted persons enter the home, the bookcase door is finished in cherry wood and features an electromagnetic locking system for maximum security.

The cook's secret passage

Hidden inside this beautifully converted barn in Jefferson , New York, there’s a secret. If you can tear your eyes past the stunning country kitchen with its vintage wooden cabinetry and look down at the tea-stained oak floor, you’ll spot a large hatch cut into the planks.

The hatch is secured by a rope to a racket on the wall to reveal an old wooden staircase, leading down to the lower floor of this 1832 grist mill. Cover it up with a rug and you’d never even know it was there! 

A hidden media room

The owners of this impressive property, an active family of five, had been coming to a rental cabin on Lake Wenatchee, Washington, for years and were ready to build one of their own. They hired  DeForest Architects to create them a house that "unfolded in time and space, rather than giving away its secrets all at once," lead architect John DeForest said of the project. Can you spot one of the home's hidden secrets?

Disguised as a set of open shelves, placed between a built-in seating nook and the staircase, a hidden door opens to reveal a media room. Since the owners wanted to create flexible spaces that could accommodate their kids and guests, but also didn’t feel too large when it was just the two of them, the concealed media room acts as useful, and very cool, overflow space.

The hidden wardrobe hangout

How's this for a clever closet transformation? A teen-friendly take on the secret wardrobe room, this cozy hangout was created by interior designer  Laura Medicus  for her daughter Sylvia by simply walling off the existing walk-in wardrobe and cutting off the back of an old armoire to make the 'door.'

Needless to say, the super-snug secret room has become Sylvia's go-to destination for kicking back, reading and gossiping with her friends, as well as watching her favorite shows and surfing the internet on her iPad.

No ordinary staircase

Upon first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking this wooden staircase was just like any other. However, it was actually designed and made by secret spaces experts Creative Home Engineering. Perfectly mundane and ordinary looking, these stairs are far more than first meets the eye...

Amazingly, the staircase sits on top of a highly secure and fully motorized trapdoor, which can be lifted up at the touch of a button to reveal a hidden understairs hangout. Formed from hardwood over a core of aluminum, the stair door is impenetrable, so the space can be used as a secure hideaway, in case anyone uninvited enters the home. How's that for genius?

The hobbit-worthy secret doorway

When this unique property hit the market, Lord of the Rings fans went wild. Hidden Meadows Farm in Pennsylvania was sold for $3.8 million and the hefty price tag may have something to do with the home's super-cool secret hobbit door.

A unique feature, the magnificent solid wooden door was commissioned by the former owner, a diehard Tolkien fan, who spent a fortune having it custom-made and installed in the luxurious mansion to resemble a real-life hobbit home. 

The hidden mini passageway

This custom clapboard home in Belmont, Massachusetts, is notable for being one of the greenest residential properties in the state. The handiwork of Platt Builders , the house has everything from low-E windows and high-performance insulation to solar panels on the roof.

If the home's virtuous green credentials don't impress, this hidden mini passageway surely will – the tiny space links two of the children's bedrooms and makes for an unexpected addition that no doubt provides hours of fun.

The room behind the mirror

This pristine newly constructed home in Eldersburg, Maryland, was previously on the market for $645,000. The five-bedroom house really has it all, including a secret room hidden behind a mirror.

A nice touch from the developer, the hidden loft space is cleverly concealed behind a mirror and would work brilliantly as a man cave, children's playroom, or calming retreat in which to relax and unwind.

The clandestine lounge

Here's another fantastic hidden room by Arizona-headquartered company Creative Home Engineering. This slate wall looks like it has nothing to hide, but give the surface a little push and you'll find yourself inside a secret space. 

Akin to a louche speakeasy from the days of prohibition, the lounge is elegant and undercover, with timber walls and everything you could need to unwind. Shut the door and you'd never know the room was there! Just imagine discovering this in your home, it really is the ideal hideout!

The fireplace safe room

Concerned about their personal security following a series of burglaries in the local area, Arizona couple Scott and Maria Jensen hired Creative Home Engineering to design and build a safe room they could escape to if the unthinkable were to happen.

A secret switch on the mantel of the couple's fireplace opens to reveal a safe space, which the pair can retreat to in the event of a home invasion. Money well-spent in Mr and Mrs Jensen's opinion, the hidden space cost a total of $15,000.

Judy Garland's hidden bedroom sanctuary

Located just above the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles lies a custom-built mansion. The property was constructed in 1941 and designed by famed architect John Elgin Woolf. It's had numerous celebrity owners over the years, including singer and actor Sammy Davis Jr., and musical legend Judy Garland, who lived here with her husband Vincente Minnelli and their daughter Liza.

Fit for any VIP, the 4,999-square-foot property boasts gorgeous rooms with immaculate interior design and five bedrooms – one of which lies behind a bookcase in the screening room.

According to the listing , the calming bedroom was Garland's personal suite. The perfect place for a Hollywood icon to escape the paparazzi, relax, and unwind, the room benefits from a sitting area, a luxury private bathroom, and a set of French doors, which open onto a tranquil courtyard garden where Garland no doubt spent plenty of downtime.

The secret playroom

In March 2021, American comedian and talk show host Jimmy Fallon placed his dreamy Manhattan home on the market for a cool $15 million and it's every bit as fun and flamboyant as the man himself. Built in 1883, the Queen Anne-style property is packed with period features, one-of-a-kind antiques and truly exceptional interior design. Doge's Palace Secret rooms in Venice

This was my first experience with LivItaly, and it was fantastic! I checked out their website after reading their great reviews on Trip Advisor. We wanted to tour the Doge Palace’s “Secret rooms” which is offered only as a private tour. For two persons, the private tour is pricey....but it was worth every penny!!!! One advantage to LivItaly is that you can check the calendar for availability and book their tours directly on their website. They are also very responsive to inquiries that can be placed via their website. We wanted a later start time, and they easily accommodated us. Pamela was our guide. She was on time, very professional, and also very entertaining! She had lots of interesting historical facts and anecdotes to share with us, and we learned all about the great escape by Casanova. She was fabulous! Truly amazing! My husband even commented “She really knows her stuff!” The tour included a visit to St Marc's Basilica in addition to the tour of the Doge’s Palace and its Secret Rooms. There are not a lot of other tours that include the Secret Rooms at the Doge, and I could not find one with less than 29 persons. For this reason, we decided to do a private tour, and I am so happy that we decided to take this one! I will definitely book with this company again on future trips to Europe! Highly recommended!
