The complete guide to Skandagiri Trek

Of the “Panchagiris” (Nandi Giri, Channagiri , Skandagiri, Brahmagiri and Hema Giri), or five hills of Chikballapur district, trek to Skandagiri is one of the prominent ones.

Skandagiri is located in a village called Kalavara Halli, and hence it is also known as Kalavara Durga. At the foothills of Skandagiri lies one of Karnataka’s ancient and oldest mutts, the Papagni Mutt.

The trail starts from Papagni Mutt and follows its way to the top, where lie the ruins of a fort which dates back to the 18th Century. Tipu Sultan conquered the fort which belonged to a local ruler and later he used it as a stronghold to fight against the British, but was eventually surrendered in 1791 when Tipu Sultan was defeated.

The top offers a panoramic view of the four neighbouring ‘Giris’ or hills and it is a sight to behold.

Skandagiri is located less than 60 km from Bengaluru and just 3 km from Chikballapur and is well connected by road and railways. Therefore, it is an ideal year-round trek for first-time trekkers as well as the seasoned ones and can be completed in 5 hours comfortably (2 hours to ascend and 2 hours to descend, with an hour’s break at the summit).

The trail originates from Papagni Mutt, in the Kalavara village. The village is 3 km from Chikballapur.

The trek itself can be divided into three sections - the first stretch is a flat trail walk from Papagni Mutt till the Forest Checkpost where one needs to report before starting the trek. The second stretch climbs up gently and sometimes steeply through dirt trails and rocky sections to the first rest point. The final stretch is a steep ascent to the summit on slippery muddy and rocky terrain.

The final section of the trek starts to get tricky with steeper ascents than the previous sections. If there are chances of injuring yourself on Skandagiri trek, it is on this section.

Make sure to wear sports or running shoes on this trek which have a good grip on slippery mud surfaces. Trekking shoes with hard soles do not provide good grip on slippery sections.

Our Trek Leader, Tanmay Bain says:

"I do not wear proper trekking shoes for any of my treks in and around Bangalore as they are not suitable for this kind of terrain. So, I only wear sports shoes which are much comfortable and provide excellent traction. "

After about 20 minutes of ascent, you will come across ruins of the fort for the first time. There are fort walls, abandoned pillars of what seems to be like a hut, some rock slabs with writings on them… These ruins make us wonder how life would have been sustained here in the 18th century!

Traverse your way up by crossing a few narrow sections. Be very careful here, as a slight misstep to your left will lead to a straight 100-foot drop down below.

Make sure to spend at least 30 mins on the top, exploring the ancient temples, taking in 360° view of the surrounding hills and reflecting on your journey till the top and do not forget to have your packed lunch or snack!

Try to be quiet and close your eyes for five minutes. Observe the sounds of nature and feel your body getting comfortable and relaxed, preparing itself to descend down the same way you came up. It is a beautiful way to spend time at the summit.

The descent is down the same path. However, you may face new challenges here as it requires a lot of caution to be applied while descending, as you will slip and slide easily on the steep sections if you do not take it slow and place your feet firmly on the ground with proper grip. The mud is loose and slides as soon as you place your foot on it.

Another challenge is, the chances of missing the right path are more while descending. The way markers are not easily visible and you may end up losing your way.

But, do not worry. If you follow the prominent trail you will reach the base without getting lost.

Skandagiri is one of those treks that can be done all year round .

However, due to very little tree cover on the trail, we recommend you wear a cap during summers to avoid exposure to the sun. No wearing a cap or a hat will tire you quickly due to dehydration caused by extreme heat.

During monsoons, carry a poncho or a raincoat along with a rain cover for your backpack to keep yourselves dry on your hike to Skandagiri.

But, we advice not to trek during heavy rain as the trail becomes slippery due to loose rocks and mud. This will hamper your experience of the trek.

Skandagiri is an easy trek. There are no sections on the Skandagiri trek that can be classified as difficult as such. However, a trekker must always anticipate and prepare for every eventuality.

Here are a few things you should keep an eye out for while ascending and descending:

• Slippery trail (Monsoon specific):

The trail becomes more tricky during monsoons as the mud and rocks become very slippery and great caution must be taken while traversing. If  trekking in the monsoons, trekkers should be very careful with their choice of footwear and should check weather charts so as to avoid days with anticipated heavy rains.

• Rocks and Stones:

There are multiple parts of the trek where trekkers will be required to scale small rocks or walk on large stone slabs. While this is an extremely enjoyable part of the trek, one needs to be careful. Slipping or falling from a rock can lead to serious injury and trekkers must exercise caution while navigating these sections.

• Muddy sections:

Since this trail is a mix of rocks and mud, there are some sections of predominantly mud trail which is very slippery even if it has not rained. Chances of slipping and sliding down for a few metres are high in these sections. Hence, firm footing is advised in these sections.

The Skandagiri trek is classified as an Easy grade trek. From Papagni Mutt, you will gain approximately 1,200 feet in altitude. Though the altitude gain is not much, the continuous ascent can be quite demanding for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Training yourself for a low altitude easy grade trek

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for the trek in 4 weeks:

Cardiovascular Endurance

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace everyday in the following manner –

  • Target completing a jog of 5 km in 45 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by running 5 km, 4 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce another day of running in your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you run in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 40 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 15 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 18 km in one hour.

Strength Training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and it’s variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also, try these exercises for strength:

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set.

– Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)

– Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors and lower back muscles regularly, promotes relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints, here’s a video you can use to work out indoors.

The night trek is a dream come true for trekkers, and nature lovers and is a paradise for photographers. Climb up the hills through the wilderness and lush green dense forest to reach the top of the hills. Skandagiri stands tall at a height of approximately 1350 mts overlooking Nandi hills and Muddenahalli. Trekker’s paradise and a delight for nature lovers, Skandagiri takes about 6-8 hours to complete the 8 km trek distance. The ruins of the fort and a Shiva Temple on the top of the hills will leave you awestruck. Just 70 km away from Bangalore, Skandagiri is famous for its sunrise views and hence the night trek. The picture-perfect sunrise views after the strenuous trek are worth the effort.

Kalavara Durga

The main fortress of Skandagiri historically is known as Kalwarbetta or Kalavara Durga and holds immense importance in the historical past. Built by Tipu Sultan, the fortress has been abandoned since 1791 after he lost the Anglo-Mysore war. However, the beauty and charm of the place have increased over time even more. This is what makes the trek, the most popular sunrise trek near Bangalore. One needs to take permission from the forest department and the trek can be booked online at Karnataka Eco-tourism.

Best Time to Visit

Skandagiri Trek

Skandagiri is famous for its sunrise trek which can be done throughout the year. However, if you do not wish to trek during the night, winter is the best time to trek Skandagiri. Summers are harsh and should be avoided. Although the fauna and flora add beauty to the mesmerizing trek during monsoon, it should be avoided. The rocks and the boulders become slippery and challenging to trek.

How to Reach

Trekking point

Skandagiri is around 70 km away from Bangalore and can be reached by own vehicle. It takes about an hour and 30 minutes to reach by road. Bangalore is well connected via air, rail and road with all the major and small cities of the country.

Quick Information:

1. The trek difficulty level is moderate. 2. Wear proper trekking shoes. 3. The trek’s distance is around 8 km. 4. Carry enough water and snacks for the trek. 5. A headlamp / Torch is a must for the night trek. 6. DO NOT LITTER.

Skandagiri Sunrise Trek Reviews

Good............Experience!!!!!!!!!!!!. Overall trek experience was excellent t with good people joining the group and enjoying the trek. There were challenges but the trek lead handled them very well and on time. activities planned were done.😉😉

Lifetime memorable trip. We started at 3 in the night and reached the point just before sunrise. While capturing all of these photos and seeing the magical views I just had one feeling, “Earth is cute” 😊😊

This trip is fantastic with so knowledgeable guide and was truly the best trekking experience. Though we were exhausted but worth the view. Overall it was a great experience. Meet new people, Had a lot of fun while the night trek.😊😊

Cool................!!!!!!!!!!!!! I met many new people and made some great connections and friends on the go. I took up the responsibility of making sure 4 people who were younger than me are safe throughout the descent and we had some laughs too. This made me feel like a big brother taking care of his younger siblings, which was certainly a great feeling for me. 😊😊

Wonderful trek! The trek leaders were really helpful and fun to hang out with! Everything was managed perfectly even the transportation from Bangalore. They kept us well-informed about every next step. One of the best treks around Bangalore with the best groups! 😉😉

It was really nice trek. We were expecting to see the sunrise with a normal atmosphere but it turned out to be a rainy day so that put more adventure in the trek😊😊

Perfect................!!! It was an awesome experience on my first trek. The pickup and drop were on time and the journey of the trek was beautiful. Would definitely recommend everyone to go here.😋😋

The trek was easy and the best part was the schedule. The trek leader makes sure that we are right on time. The booking process was easy. ❤️‍🔥

The Skandgiri Trek was an amazing experience for someone like me who is new to trekking. It was challenging because of the rain and slippery conditions but quite an adventure. The view from the top and the sunrise was serene.

Our Skandagiri trek was really good. All members were friendly and funny. The organisers were good...felt they could be more cheering. Overall it was a great experience with Backpackers.💖💖💖

A Complete Guide to Skandagiri Trek: Everything You Need to Know

Set within the verdant scenery of Karnataka, the Skandagiri trek beckons adventure enthusiasts and nature admirers alike.

Recognized as the 'Sunrise Trek,' this expedition unfolds like a captivating narrative, exposing the enchantment of the early morning hours and the fascination of the ancient ruins adorning its peak.

Let's delve into a thorough guide to the Skandagiri trek, uncovering all the essentials to ensure this journey becomes an indelible entry in your adventure chronicle.

The Enchanting Prelude:

Situated approximately 70 kilometres from Bangalore, Skandagiri is a part of the Nandi Hills range, offering an elevation of around 1,450 meters (4,708 feet).

As you approach the base, a tranquil ambience surrounds you, setting the stage for the exhilarating journey that awaits.

The Journey Begins:

The Skandagiri trek commences in the darkness of the night, a time when the world is draped in silence. The initial ascent is a gradual climb, accompanied only by the rustling of leaves and the occasional hoot of a distant owl. Equipped with flashlights, trekkers weave through the dense forests that cloak the lower slopes, adding an element of mystery to the expedition.

Ensuring you have the right footwear for this venture is crucial. Sturdy trekking shoes provide the necessary grip to navigate the rocky and uneven terrain comfortably.

While the path may be challenging, the right shoes become your reliable companions in conquering the ascent.

The Ancient Ruins:

The highlight of the trek lies at the summit, where the ruins of an ancient fort await. The stone walls, remnants of Tipu Sultan's fortress, whisper tales of a bygone era.

As the first rays of dawn illuminate the landscape, these ruins take on a mystical aura, casting long shadows that dance upon the rugged terrain.

Ensuring your essentials are well-packed is paramount. A durable and spacious rucksack or duffle bag proves indispensable for carrying water, snacks, and extra layers of clothing.

If you prefer a more organized approach, a trolley bag can offer convenience without compromising on functionality during the trek.

Essential Information for Trekkers:

Distance and Duration:

  • The Skandagiri trek covers a distance of approximately 8 kilometres.
  • The journey, although relatively short, requires careful navigation due to the rocky and uneven terrain.

Difficulty Level:

  • Rated as moderate, the trek demands a decent level of physical fitness. The ascent becomes steeper as you approach the summit, presenting a challenge for both novice and experienced trekkers.

Best Time to Visit:

  • The ideal time to embark on the Skandagiri trek is during the cooler months, from November to February. The weather is pleasant, and the skies are clear, providing an unobstructed view of the sunrise.

Carrying spare t-shirts is advisable, especially during the warmer months. Dressing in layers allows you to adjust to temperature variations during the trek, ensuring comfort as you navigate through different sections of the trail.

Practical Tips for Trekkers:

  • Wear sturdy trekking shoes with a good grip to navigate the rocky terrain comfortably.
  • For the initial village trails, comfortable sandals or flip-flops might be suitable.
  • Dress in layers, as temperatures can drop significantly during the early morning hours.

Flashlights and Headlamps:

  • Carry reliable flashlights or headlamps to light your way through the dimly lit forest paths.

Water and Snacks:

  • Stay hydrated and energized by carrying an ample supply of water and some snacks for the trek.

Permissions:

  • Check if any permissions are required before embarking on the trek, especially if it involves camping.

The Grand Finale: Sunrise Atop Skandagiri

As the trek reaches its pinnacle, trekkers are rewarded with a breathtaking spectacle – the sunrise above the clouds.

The first rays of sunlight paint the sky in hues of orange and pink, gradually unveiling the vast expanse below. The panoramic view from the summit, with the clouds seemingly at arm's reach, is a moment that etches itself into the memory of every adventurer.

Conclusion: Capturing the Essence of Skandagiri

The Skandagiri trek is not just a physical journey; it's a rendezvous with nature's grandeur and a communion with history.

As you stand atop the ancient fortress, watching the sunrise over the sweeping landscapes, the world below fades away, leaving only the echo of your heartbeat and the whispers of a thousand stories.

This trek is an invitation to embrace the thrill of the night, the enchantment of the ruins, and the awe-inspiring beauty that unfolds as the first light pierces the darkness – a complete sensory experience that lingers long after you descend from the heights of Skandagiri.

Let the Skandagiri trek be your gateway to a realm where adventure meets serenity above the clouds.

Skandagiri Hills Trek (Bangalore) – Full Travel Guide

Brief about skandagiri hills trek.

If you’re looking for an exciting weekend getaway near Bangalore, the Skandagiri Hills Trek is definitely worth considering. Situated just 70 km from the city, this trek offers a refreshing break from the urban chaos, allowing you to bask in the region’s natural beauty. Opt for the night trek to enjoy the enchanting experience of panoramic views under a starlit sky and a captivating sunrise.

The 8 km trail takes you through rugged terrain, past six concentric fortification walls, and up to the summit at 4429 feet above sea level. While the hike isn’t too challenging, be cautious with slippery grass and bushes, especially during the night. It’s best to avoid the Skandagiri night trek during the monsoon season. For a hassle-free trip, consider using shared transfers from Bangalore.

Beautiful Sunrise View From Skandagiri Hills

Skandagiri is also known as Kalavara Durga. It is an ancient mountain fortress located in Karnataka, and offers a serene environment away from the city. The day-long hike starts at Papagni Mutt and leads to the historic fort ruins dating back to the 18th century. Once you reach the top, take in the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding hills, making the trek truly worthwhile.

Best places to visit near skandagiri trek.

There’s a majestic rock formation overlooking Nandi Giri which has been admired by renowned personalities like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sir M. Visveswaraya during British Rule. As a traveler, I loved the unique trail that offered a delightful mix of rocks, boulders, and mud, surrounded by thick vegetation. It’s amazing to find such a trek so close to the city!

As you get closer to the summit, you’ll be captivated by the dilapidated fort walls, carved pillars, and stones that transport you back to the 18th century when Skandagiri Fort was alive with grandeur. Reaching the summit, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the intact Shiva Temple, still worshipped by devotees who climb all the way up. It’s a rare sight for a fort with surrounding ruins.

The summit rewards you with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, forests, villages, and even Chikballapur town. After completing the Skandagiri Trek, you can explore nearby attractions like Nandi Hill, Muddenahalli (birthplace of Sir M. Visvesvaraya), and Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple, an ancient Hindu temple complex with intricately carved pillars and a reflecting pool. Trust me, this adventure is one you won’t want to miss!

What is the best time to visit Skandagiri Trek

The best time to hike Skandagiri is from September to February, when the weather is more pleasant and the views are at their peak.

Skandagiri is a fantastic trek that can be enjoyed throughout most of the year. If you’re hiking during the summer, don’t forget to wear a cap to avoid dehydration from the sun’s heat.

For monsoon treks, bring a poncho, raincoat, and backpack rain cover to stay dry, but be cautious during heavy rain, as the trail can become slippery and challenging due to loose rocks and mud.

Although trekking between February and May is possible, the scenery may not be as breathtaking as in winter. Monsoon season is generally not recommended, as South India’s long rainy periods make the trail slippery and increase the risk of injury.

Trust me, trekking Skandagiri during the right season is an experience you won’t want to miss!

How to reach the starting point of the trek?

Reaching the Skandagiri Trek base location is a breeze, even if you haven’t selected transfers.

By Air: From Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru, it’s just a 50-minute drive (43.7 km)

By Train: From Nandi Halt railway station, it’s a mere 25-minute drive (16.9 km).

By Bus: You can hop on a bus from Majestic Bus Station, Bengaluru, as there are buses running every 10 minutes to Chikballapur and vice versa.

By Own Vehicle: The Mylappanahalli Bus Stop is only 14 minutes away (7.8 km) by car or cab. If you’re coming from Bangalore City Center, it’s approximately 67.2 km away, and you can get there in around 1 hour 22 minutes via car or cab.

Availability of accommodations and food near the trek

When it comes to food during your Skandagiri adventure, Nandi grama, at the base of Nandi Hills, offers a few small eateries for a quick bite. For more dining options, head to Chikballapur, where you’ll find a variety of decent restaurants. Staying hydrated is essential, and you can find water at the trek’s base, Papagni Mutt, where a small groundwater tank provides a reliable source.

Accommodation:

As it is a one-day trek, there is no need to stay near the base. As per your convenience, ou can book good hotels in Chikballapur as well as Bangalore (because it isn’t that far) and travel from there.

The Difficulty level of the Skandagiri Trek

Skandagiri is an accessible trek for most adventurers, with no sections that are particularly difficult. However, it’s essential to be prepared for various trail conditions and exercise caution throughout the trek. During the monsoons, the trail can become slippery, making proper footwear crucial and checking weather forecasts to avoid heavy rain days advisable.

While scaling small rocks or walking on large stone slabs can be an enjoyable part of the trek, be careful not to slip or fall, as it could result in injuries. Additionally, some sections of the trail consist predominantly of muddy terrain, which can be slippery even without rain. Ensure you maintain firm footing in these areas to avoid slipping and sliding down the trail. With the right preparation and caution, you’ll have an incredible and safe time exploring the Skandagiri trek!

We went to skandagiri on the 3rd oct 2015(Saturday), parked our vehicle in the Chikkaballapur town and took autos to the foothills. 5 of us left from bangalore it took us 2hrs from hennur via the route you suggested. I followed your reviews and found it very useful so i thought we’ll go.

The ride was amazing, but it started pouring once we reached chikballapur. Due to the rain and since we reached at 10pm the autos demanded 200 rupees for a one way fare. But seeing no other way to reach the destination we reluctantly took two autos.

The route from the town was pitch black as there was a power cut in the town, the road and the surrounding region was also not visible. Only for a second when the lighting struck could we see the surrounding in a flash. The ride was scary as the roads we flooded and very narrow, the auto driver claimed to have taken us on a route through the village which was one of the three route suggested on google maps.

1km before papagni math one person came with a flashlight and blocked the road, he claimed to be a forest official and prevented us from going any further. He was pretty strict and said that all treks are cancelled even during the day as a leopard had attacked cattle in the surrounding region. This seemed too fake, but we had to listen, we tried persuading him but he refused.

With no other option we had to return disappointed. Since we took the same auto he demanded us another 200 to go back, or else drop us there. But at 10:45 stranded in a place none of us knew we paid 300 to each auto for both ways.

This seemed difficult to believe as so many other people have trekked before and enjoyed the trek and the sunrise. I thought this whole experience was a scam to loot the tourists. Easy money for both parties the auto guy could have had a agreement with the official. But i don’t want to be judgemental about the proceeding but would take it as a learning experience. Can you please let me know if they have actually banned trekking to the hills or these guys are making a business giving us false information.

Yes you can go for this trek throughout the year but best time to go for the trek is after monsoon and in winter. Due to unfortunate incident at skandagiri, now-a-days police camp there to prevent people from going for the night trek.

The trek to Skandagiri hilltop is around 4 km and takes around 3 hours to reach. It starts at the Papagni Temple near the Kalavara village. Usually there will be at least 2-3 guides with each group. They will guide you through the path and make sure everyone stays with the group as there are many instances of wild animals like tigers showing up. The last phase of the Skandagiri Hills trek is a bit steeper than the others and you must be careful while climbing up as the rocks tend to be loose and slippery. Skandagiri Sunrise

Once at the top, you will have to find a good spot for yourself to see the sunrise. Since each group may have close to 20-25 people, it will be crowded and you may not find a good spot. It is extremely windy and cold at the top so make sure to wear jackets and cover your ears. The guides will know the exact time of sunrise. It will be a good idea to use your mobile phone compass to find the direction of the sunrise. You will be able to witness the sky changing colors during the sunrise and it is a wonderful sight to behold. It gets quite sunny after the sunrise, and the view from the hilltop is mesmerizing.

Tipu Sultan Fort

Built by Tippu Sultan, the ruins of this fort clearly indicate that the fort was once an elaborate structure. Though only a few walls remain standing, it adds to the mysterious aura of the place. Exploring these ruins deeper reveals the presence of two caves and 6 samadhis inside the structure.

Back to base camp

The trek back down is the same way, even though it may feel like an entirely new place in the sunlight. The drop is quite steep and it might feel more difficult to descent than it was to climb. Take care on each step as you may easily slip down the rocks. The endpoint will be where you began the trek, the Papagni Temple. Note that the guides may not accompany you on the way back. Most travel agents provide pick up and drop, so you will be given time to meet up at the starting point.

About Skandagiri: Kalwarbetta (Skandagiri), 68 Kms from Bangalore is one the hill forts amongst the Nandi Hill ranges. The dilapidated walls of Tipu's fort can be found today on steep Kalwarbetta (Skandagiri), near the village of Kalwara. History says this was a small but strong hill fort. It surrendered to British troops on 19 October 1791. It remained in British hands until the peace treaty of 1792, which concluded of the third Anglo-Mysore war. This is a tedious trek as the hill is precipitous and high. The trek starts from the Papagni Temple at the foothills of Kalwara village. The fortress of Kalwarbetta is in full sight throughout the walk uphill. This steep and fantastic trek through a maze of dense shrub is highly intriguing. Kalwarbetta is a teaser. Just as you reach the fort wall contended that you have topped the hill, you see another ring of fort. No sooner you reach there; you will find another majestic fort wall waiting to be conquered. There are six such series of stonewalls protecting an abandoned temple on the hilltop. There are 2 caves, one starts from the base and as per locals, leads to the temple at peak and another one is somewhere midway which is about 30 feet only. Both are yet unexplored, especially the first one. Local say that there are pythons in the caves and had galloped their goats at times. Supposedly, there are 6 Samadhi in that cave.

Simon Kinberg in Talks to Produce, Reboot ‘Star Trek' Movie Franchise for Paramount

Longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is beaming up to a new franchise.

The multi-hyphenate is in talks to produce a new Star Trek feature for Paramount Pictures, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. If all goes well, the door would open to him taking active creative roles on the rest of the storied franchise's film side. Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman are the main creative producers on Star Trek ‘s television side.

The project Kinberg would step into is already in very active development. Toby Haynes, who directed episodes of of the  Star Wars  series  Andor , is on board to direct the new feature, with Seth Grahame-Smith writing the script. The project is said to be set decades before the events of the 2009 movie that was directed J.J. Abrams, likely around modern times. It is said to involve the creation of the Starfleet and humankind's first contact with alien life.

Abrams remains involved with the new project as a producer. There is no release date for the feature, but the studio has signaled that it would like a 2025 opening. The machinations of the franchise take place against the backdrop of a potential sale of Paramount, which could find itself under the ownership of Sony or Skydance.

There hasn't been a Star Trek movie since Star Trek Beyond , which was released in 2016. In recent years,  Trek  primarily has lived on the small screen, boldly finding new life thanks to numerous streaming shows on Paramount+, among them  Star Trek Discovery ,  Picard and Strange New Worlds . Efforts to relaunch the film side, including reuniting the Abrams Trek cast that included Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg, among others, have ended up stranded on rocky alien shores. Paramount is also understood to still be developing a fourth Trek  to feature that cast that is being described as the final chapter for this crew.

Kinberg rose to prominence thanks to his writing and producing work on Fox's X-Men franchise, over whose course he took creative control and even made his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix . He has has also worked movies ranging from Murder on the Orient Express to The Martian , as well as select Star Wars projects. And he worked with Grahame-Smith before, as co-screenwriter and executive producer on his adaptation of A braham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter .

Puck was the first to report on Kinberg being in negotiations to reboot the Star Trek movie franchise.

A Warp Drive Breakthrough Inches a Tiny Bit Closer to Star Trek

Blue beam of light among the stars

A team of physicists has discovered that it’s possible to build a real, actual, physical warp drive and not break any known rules of physics . One caveat: The vessel doing the warping can’t exceed the speed of light, so you’re not going to get anywhere interesting anytime soon. But this research still represents an important advance in our understanding of gravity .

Moving Without Motion

Einstein’s general theory of relativity is a tool kit for solving problems involving gravity that connects mass and energy with deformations in spacetime. In turn, those spacetime deformations instruct the mass and energy how to move. In almost all cases, physicists use the equations of relativity to figure out how a particular combination of objects will move. They have some physical scenario, like a planet orbiting a star or two black holes colliding, and they ask how those objects deform spacetime and what the subsequent evolution of the system should be.

But it’s also possible to run Einstein’s math in reverse by imagining some desired motion and asking what kind of spacetime deformation can make it possible. This is how the Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre discovered the physical basis for a warp drive—long a staple of the Star Trek franchise.

The goal of a warp drive is to get from A to B in the time between commercial breaks, which typically involves faster-than-light motion. But special relativity expressly forbids speeds faster than light. While this never bothered the writers of Star Trek , it did irritate Alcubierre. He discovered that it was possible to build a warp drive through a clever manipulation of spacetime, arranging it so that space in front of a vessel gets scrunched up and the space behind the vessel stretched out. This generates motion without, strictly speaking, movement.

It sounds like a contradiction, but that’s just one of the many wonderful aspects of general relativity. Alcubierre’s warp drive avoids violations of the speed-of-light limit because it never moves through space; instead space itself is manipulated to, in essence, bring the spacecraft’s destination closer to it.

While tantalizing, Alcubierre’s design has a fatal flaw. To provide the necessary distortions of spacetime, the spacecraft must contain some form of exotic matter, typically regarded as matter with negative mass. Negative mass has some conceptual problems that seem to defy our understanding of physics, like the possibility that if you kick a ball that weighs negative 5 kilograms, it will go flying backwards, violating conservation of momentum. Plus, nobody has ever seen any object with negative mass existing in the real universe, ever.

These problems with negative mass have led physicists to propose various versions of “energy conditions” as supplements to general relativity. These aren’t baked into relativity itself, but add-ons needed because general relativity allows things like negative mass that don’t appear to exist in our universe—these energy conditions keep them out of relativity’s equations. They’re scientists’ response to the unsettling fact that vanilla GR allows for things like superluminal motion, but the rest of the universe doesn’t seem to agree.

Warp Factor Zero

The energy conditions aren’t experimentally or observationally proven, but they are statements that concord with all observations of the universe, so most physicists take them rather seriously. And until recently, physicists have viewed those energy conditions as making it absolutely 100 percent clear that you can’t build a warp drive, even if you really wanted to.

But there is a way around it, discovered by an international team of physicists led by Jared Fuchs at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. (The team is also affiliated with the Applied Propulsion Laboratory of Applied Physics, a virtual think tank dedicated to the research of, among many other things, warp drives.) In a paper accepted for publication in the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity , the researchers dug deep into relativity to explore if any version of a warp drive could work.

Don’t Believe the Biggest Myth About Heat Pumps

By Matt Simon

The End of ‘iPhone’

By Carlton Reid

Your Bike Tires Are Too Skinny. Riding on Fat, Supple Tires Is Just Better

By Matt Kamen

The equations of general relativity are notoriously difficult to solve, especially in complex cases such as a warp drive. So the team turned to software algorithms; instead of trying to solve the equations by hand, they explored their solutions numerically and verified that they conformed to the energy conditions.

The team did not actually attempt to construct a propulsion device. Instead, they explored various solutions to general relativity that would allow travel from point to point without a vessel undergoing any acceleration or experiencing any overwhelming gravitational tidal forces within the vessel, much to the comfort of any imagined passengers. They then checked whether these solutions adhered to the energy conditions that prevent the use of exotic matter.

The researchers did indeed discover a warp drive solution: a method of manipulating space so that travelers can move without accelerating. There is no such thing as a free lunch, however, and the physicality of this warp drive does come with a major caveat: The vessel and passengers can never travel faster than light. Also disappointing: the fact that the researchers behind the new work don’t seem to bother with figuring out what configurations of matter would allow the warping to happen.

The Future of Gravity

On one hand, that’s a gigantic letdown. We already have plenty of methods for traveling slower than light (rockets, walking, etc.), so adding one more to the list isn’t all that exciting. Plus, even if we wanted to build this warp drive, the gulf between this hyper-theoretical work and an actual, physical propulsion mechanism is the same as the difference between writing down Newton’s laws and building a Falcon 9.

But that doesn’t mean this new development isn’t interesting. We don’t fully understand gravity, and we know that Einstein’s theory is incomplete. One of the signposts that we have to a future understanding of gravity is the fact that general relativity allows for interesting, exotic solutions—like warp drives—that appear to violate other domains of physical understanding.

Us physicists like it when all of our theories line up and agree on the nature of the Universe. So if the energy conditions set real limits on physics—limits where things like negative mass don’t just not exist , but can’t exist —then we’d like a physical theory that says that from the beginning, instead of relying on add-ons like the energy conditions.

Exploring how a warp drive might (not) work, and under what conditions and restrictions, is a step in that direction. For years physicists thought that the energy conditions outlawed all kinds of warp drives, yet the new research shows a possible way around that. What comes next will be a win no matter what; whether we get a fancy superluminal warp drive or not. That’s because whatever comes out of future lines of inquiry along these directions, we’re going to learn more about the force of gravity, and just possibly revolutionize our understanding of it.

And who knows what we’ll get once we understand gravity better.
