This market is quite difficult to access using public transport . The easiest way to get there is to book the best shuttle bus here , which can take you directly to the market .

The meeting point is at Siam Paragon , so be sure to reserve in advance .

We’d set aside about an hour to browse around, and a good tip is to look carefully at the options as you may encounter vintage pieces if you’re lucky.

If the thought of having a haircut occurs to you when you’re hard at work refreshing your wardrobe, drop by this vintage barbershop named DunkDunk Vintage .

If you’re in central Bangkok, you can’t miss Jodd Fairs , a new night market that’s the talk of the town. It’s a night market situated next to Central Plaza Rama 9 where you can walk from the market to the department store in a few minutes.

This will be infinitely convenient for those who want to head over right after shopping in the regular district.

For added context, Jodd Fairs has gained popularity among locals and tourists alike, since it was the once beloved Train Night Market Ratchada. Before Covid-19, the former market gained a lot of fans, especially the tourist crowd who loved the vintage food trucks and local fashion brands.

There is an event zone where you can take a look at classic cars and take some pics. It’s important to note, however, that this market will probably be on the crowded side. No matter where you walk, you’ll see long queues of people waiting in line for their items.

A must-try dish here is ‘Leng Zab’ from ฿200 (~USD6) . Think of it as a spicy soup brewed from a rich stock of pork bones. This restaurant named Mae Klong Noodle & Leng Saap is usually packed with customers but if you adore spicy food, try dropping by when you visit Jodd Fairs.

Getting here is very easy because the market is a 5-minute walk from MRT Rama 9. Simply get off the train at the MRT station and walk to the back of Central Plaza Rama 9, before you’ll see the familiar tentage of Jodd Fairs.

Chatuchak Weekend Market – see full review ( map )is a huge marketplace held in the northern suburb of Bangkok. It’s also the biggest in Thailand. The market is a chaotic collection of over 6,000 stalls. Collectively, they occupy a space of some five football fields .

Loads of locals and tourists alike throng here every weekend eager to spend the whole day shopping or browsing among the merchandise on display.

There is an incredible variety of goods for sale ranging from anchors to antiques. You’ll find almost anything here. Want to purchase a Siamese Fighter Fish or a second-hand pair of jeans!

You’ll find it all here. There is a hill tribe section selling a good selection of woven textiles as well as antiques and artifacts both genuine and fake from all over Thailand as well as from neighboring countries.

The plant and flower section offers an excellent insight into Thai flora while the food stalls display every conceivable kind of Thai fare fresh from the farm and sea. The market is often referred to as the wildlife supermarket of the world due to endangered species being illegally sold here. Thankfully, this trade is in decline.

Pratunam Clothing Market (Bangkok City) ~4.2 Stars

Pratunam Clothing Market – see full review ( map ) occupies substantial space in central Bangkok and consists of a maze of covered small shops and stalls. It is particularly good for bargaining for inexpensive fashion garments, textiles, (including Indian fabrics) sewing accessories, and some general domestic items.

Vendors sell a variety of inexpensive merchandise on their stalls such as T-Shirts, Jeans, Shirts, Skirts, Shoes, Costume Jewellery, Handicrafts, and various other assorted paraphernalia.

Chinatown (Bangkok City) ~4.6 Stars

Chinatown – see full review ( map ) is a chaotic combination of pungent smells and the hustle and bustle of diversified streets and stalls. 19th-century houses and commercial buildings stretch the length of Songwat Road as are wholesale spice shops, bestowing an old-worldly flavor.

Fresh and preserved food line the crowded sidewalks past the fabric market on Sampeng Lane. Countless gold shops, Chinese herbal medicine stalls, cafe’s and restaurants throng the main traffic artery around Yaowarat Road. Religious paraphernalia can be found at traffic-choked Charoen Krung Road.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market (100 km from Bangkok ) 3.8 Stars

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market (see full review) is, without a doubt, the most popular floating market around Bangkok. It is situated in the Ratchaburi province 100 kilometers or 60 miles southwest of the city ( map ).

The market is a labyrinth of narrow canals crammed with small flat wooden boats paddled mainly by females, some of whom dress in traditional blue farmers’ shirts and conical straw hats. Fresh produce sold here comes straight from the farm and they include fruit, vegetables, and spices. Vendors also sell refreshments and souvenir straw hats.

Together there are three floating markets that make up Damnoen Saduak. The largest being Tom Khem on Klong Damnoen Saduak. Another is Hai Kui where superstructures are anchored to the banks of the canal. They act as warehouses selling souvenirs, mainly to large, unsuspecting tour groups. The least crowded market is called Khun Phitak which is situated on a smaller canal in the southern part of Damnoen Saduak.

Amphawa Floating Market (80km from Bangkok) ~4.3 Stars

While the Amphawa Floating Market – see full review ( map ) might be one of the most popular markets of its kind for local Thais, it’s also one of the most spectacular sites of its kind for tourists to see too. Its vast formation of canals is the perfect setting for a great escape.

And the best thing of all is that you’ll get an eyewitness account of how the locals here go about their daily business selling all sorts of goodies (mostly fresh produce) from their small wooden boats. You’ll also be able to browse the many shops and stalls after which you can enjoy some fantastic views from any one of the restaurants along the canals.

Bangkok is a city of markets. These markets are colorful, vibrant, lively, sometimes wild, and full of activity. Many a time, they are the heart and soul of Bangkok. When I first started charting out my itinerary for the capital city, I struggled to find a really comprehensive list of the “Best Markets to visit in Bangkok”. By comprehe nsive, I mean a list that could satisfy the needs of every traveler – a list that had something for everyone.

That is when I decided to draw up this exciting post by reaching out to seasoned travelers from across the world and asking them for their #1 choices on markets to be visited in Bangkok . Bangkok is one of the most happening cities in Southeast Asia . So, choices were varied. They included food and flower markets, night markets, floating markets, and combination markets.

So, here’s our list of 13 must-visit markets in and around Bangkok – all vetted by travelers who have spent weeks/months/years in the city. The best part about this list is that the experiences are real. Pick and choose one or many – you will never be disappointed.

If you are in Bangkok over the weekend and have time to do only one market, then Chatuchak Weekend Market is the one you should pick. Chatuchak is the largest market in Thailand and one of the most exciting markets to visit in Bangkok .

It has more than 30 gates and is divided into 27 sections, and has more than 15,000 stalls . Here you can find handicrafts, Thai souvenirs, furniture, fresh and decorative flowers, ceramic wares, cheap clothing, food items, and basically anything under the sun. Also, get a Thai massage if you wish to.

Chatuchak weekend market is located at Kamphaeng Phet and is easily accessible by the MRT or BTS. It is open all day on Saturdays and Sundays and in the evening on Fridays. Plan your trip in such a way that you are in Bangkok over the weekend to watch the spectacle called Chatuchak!

Don Wai Floating Market

Don Wai floating market is a 30-minute drive away from Bangkok . You can get there by taxi, Grab or Uber. Once you are there you have to buy a ferry ticket to enjoy the floating market. Before the boat ride, you can grab some local food from the market. You will mostly not find foreigners around.

This market has snacks and sweets that that are not commonly seen elsewhere. Just walk around and make sure you get enough food. Almost everybody enjoys the ride while eating. We chose to eat duck for lunch and bought a few snacks as well. For dessert, we tried the steamed banana. It was truly delicious and sweet.

The ferry trip lasts an hour and you will find houses and temples all around. You can also feed fishes during the tour by buying bread in the boat or in the market. The boat ride is slow and relaxing. They have only a few trips during the day and maybe you need to wait a little bit longer for the boat ride but it will not be a problem if you love local markets as we do!

Yodpiman Flower Market

The Yodpiman Flower Market in Bangkok is a market dedicated solely to the purchase and sale of flowers. It is not the typical market you would find in any city and hence, is one of the more interesting markets to visit in Bangkok. Yodpiman would suit you perfectly if you are looking to do something different.

The market houses fresh flowers from all over Thailand. Apart from exotic orchids, you can spot a number of tropical beauties such as marigolds, jasmines, plumerias, and amaranths . Even prettier are the beautiful floral arrangements neatly arranged on tables.

Yodpiman is a great place to immerse yourself in the local culture and be part of a day in the flower vendors’ lives. The market is open throughout the day. However, the best time to visit it is between midnight to 4 am in the morning when the flowers come in and there is a lot of energy and action surrounding their sale and receipt. The easiest way to get here is to take the ferry to the Yodpiman Pier on the Chao Phraya river.

Bangkok is one of my favorite cities in Asia, but that might be because it was the first city I landed in to explore this fascinating region of the world. One of the reasons I love it so much is simply because of all the fantastic shopping centers, epic malls, and night markets all over the city !

It will take you quite some time to experience them all, but one of my favorites has to be the Silom Night Market . The entire area of Silom is worth a visit with all of its delicious street food, restaurants, and lively bars – but the night market is the true gem here.

The Silom Night Market is one of the largest markets to visit in Bangkok for sure and it’s perfect for tourists/souvenir shopping. It opens every day at 5 pm and is a solid place for clothing, shoes, fake designer bags, watches, and much more . While all of this stuff isn’t of the highest quality, you should be able to haggle them down to fantastic prices! Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s definitely worth stopping by and checking out the area for an hour or two!

Khlong Toey Wet Market

Bangkok’s biggest wet market probably isn’t a place you’re going to pick up any souvenirs, nor is it somewhere for the super squeamish, but if you want a fascinating look at Bangkok life , then add it to your itinerary. After all, if you’ve eaten at a locally run restaurant in Bangkok, chances are at least something in your meal came through Khlong Toey.

Wander the produce stalls picking up interesting local fruits like rose apples or rambutans at low prices or take a walk on the wild side along the stalls selling everything from BBQ’d frog to giant beetles. And go early. While the market opens from 6 am to 2 am, it’s livelier in the morning and it can get uncomfortably hot as the day goes on.

Khlong Toey (also spelled Khlong Toei on maps) is in the south-east of the city. If you’re coming for Sukhumvit jump on the MRT to Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. It’s about a six-minute walk from there.

From Silom or the area around the Grand Palace, get the MRT to Klong Toei station and walk 10 minutes. Just wander into any of the entrances and get lost in the madness.

Taling Chan Floating Market

Taling Chan Floating Market is one of the easiest half-day trips from Bangkok. It’s just a 30-minute drive out of the city and you can get a taxi there for under 150 baht ! The market has a much more local feel to it. While there are touristy stalls and places to get souvenirs and gifts, there are also locals purchasing goods and eating at the many stalls.

Most visitors to Taling Chan take a cruise down the Klongs, where they can see how people live and operate on the canals. It also stops off at a pretty temple. Tours start at just 60 baht and go up to about 100 baht .

Also on offer is lots and lots of Thai food – mainly seafood (there aren’t many vegetarian options here, unfortunately!). The stalls are a must-visit if you’re feeling culinary adventurous!

Or just grab a coconut, take a seat next to the band and soak in the market atmosphere. There will undoubtedly be hundreds of things to admire, from the displays of vegetables to the impressive boatmanship of the sellers. Once you’re all shopped out, head just outside the market to get a foot massage for just 200 baht. The market is open on weekends, from 7-8 am until 4 pm. The fact that it is so accessible from the city makes it a must-do on any Bangkok itinerary .

Or Tor Kor Wet Market

If you are looking to visit a food market in Bangkok, then Or Tor Kor Market is the best place to go to. Voted as the 4th Best Fresh Market around the world by CNN Travel , Or Tor Kor has an enviable collection of both fresh and packaged food. Whether you are a local or a tourist, the market has something for everyone.

Here, you can pick some of the world’s finest seafood, freshest green vegetables, and the most exotic fruits . Durian is available in plenty. So are rambutans, mangosteens, Thai mangoes, and pearl white strawberries. You can also get small bags of dried food and Thai nam phriks to carry back home as souvenirs.

There is a separate section for cooked food. You can find an overwhelming collection of Thai dishes and desserts. Pick and choose a meal that you can happily eat in the food court at the end of the market. The best part about Or Tor Kor is that it is located at a stone’s throw away from the very popular Chatuchak Weekend Market and the two can be easily clubbed together.

Maeklong Railway Market

There are so many fabulous markets in and around Bangkok it’s hard to choose just one. But one market that stands out for us is the Maeklong Railway Market about an hour’s drive from Bangkok. We visited it during our stay at Soi Rambuttri in Bangkok , and it’s one of the most bizarre markets to visit in Bangkok.

It has the same bustling atmosphere and the sights, sounds and smells we’ve come to love in other Thai markets. But there’s one difference. The Maeklong Railway Market has a train running right through the middle of it! The train passes so close it’s possible to reach out and touch it. There isn’t a foot to spare, and vendors pull baskets of produce away, fold the overhead awnings back and jump to the side just in time as the train rolls past.

As soon as it’s gone everything is put back in its original place and everyone goes about their day as though nothing crazy ever happened. This is an authentic Thai market that’s set up more for locals than tourists. And we had fun sitting on the side of the tracks sipping a cup of tea.

Rot Fai Ratchada Night Market

There are two Rot Fai Night Market (also called Train Night Market), but it’s the one in Ratchada that has me going back every single time I visit Bangkok .

Don’t confuse train market with the one made famous by YouTube which is set up dangerously close to a train track where merchants have to ingeniously move their stands as the train rushes past – the Maeklong.

The Rot Fai Market is known instead for its retro style, hipster barbershops, and trendy food stalls attracting young local crowds and visitors alike.

Open every day from 5 pm to 1 am, the Rot Fai Night Market is conveniently located just a stone throw away from the Thailand Cultural Center MRT Station, making it very accessible and easy to reach. Within the market, you’ll find three distinct sections for eating, shopping, and drinking.

Being a foodie, I’m always dazzled by the diversity of street food vendors, the most popular being the (giant) pork spine spicy soup. If you want to “do it for the ‘gram” try out the rainbow grilled cheese, the fried ice cream, the seafood platters or the smoothies served in fruit shell. Digest your meal by strolling through the middle section of the market filled with a variety of stalls offering everything from vintage clothing to gadgets and souvenirs. End your night at one of the many bars on the periphery of the market where you can enjoy live music and great views from their rooftop seating area.

Huamum Night Market

Even though Bangkok is a huge tourist destination, a quick dollar or 2 by taxi will likely find you well off any well-trodden tourist track. And it’s really not hard to find new and exciting excursions in the city.

I always go in search of the city’s many lesser-known night markets , which, in contrast to the day-time fresh and wet markets, are geared more towards feeding and entertaining the after-work crowds in Bangkok when temperatures are more bearable, and people are more alive.

There are many localized night markets to visit in Bangkok, often dotted in Bangkok’s suburbs. And Huamum Night Market near Ladprao is one of my favorites. A daily event (opening times: 6:00 pm to midnight), Huamum focuses less on the tourist track, and shares more local food trends, with stalls selling things like flavored ‘kap moo’ pork crackling. And there’s always a Koong Tung (aka Shrimp Bucket Table) where barbecued shrimp are served on the table top with a hot and tangy “bang bang” sauce.

At the same time they do have an occasional antique and retro feel to the market , similar to the more famous “Talad Rot Fai” Train Market, with interesting local bric-a-brac, and an intriguing Thai twist on nostalgia for a Thai yesteryear. Huamum Night Market is found between Ladprao and the Ram Inthra areas of Bangkok and is best found by taxi.

Amphawa Floating Market

We spent in Bangkok a lot of time exploring the city and its surroundings, doing different day trips to nearby towns and sights. One of our favorite trips was to Amphawa floating market , 88km from Bangkok . Thai food markets are always exciting with a lot to try and taste but floating markets are even better and more exotic.

The easiest and fastest way of getting to Amphawa is by taking a shuttle bus from Bangkok that goes all the way there (THB 90) or doing a day tour. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can get there using local trains and buses. The best time to visit Amphawa is during the weekend from Friday to Sunday when it gets busy with hundreds of vendors and food stalls.

The town itself is nice with many Buddhist temples. The most interesting one is Wat Bang Koong or The Tree Temple, a small shrine surrounded by the roots of a huge tree.

Amphawa market is a real paradise for the sweet tooth and seafood lovers . Visitors can try countless prawns, squids, crabs, mussels either fried or BBQ as well as traditional pastries, cookies and fruit shakes. Watching how locals cook food and serve it into plates while sitting on small wooden boats is a real show. Food prices vary from THB 15 to THB 50 depending on a dish.

Patpong Night Market

After spending a lot of time in this incredible city, I’ve discovered that one of the quirkiest things to do in Bangkok is to visit the Patpong Night Market.

If you’re looking to pick up some last minute souvenirs from Thailand, but still want to experience the nightlife, then this is where you go. It’s nestled in the heart of the Bangkok business district and has, in recent years, developed a name for being one of the more open-minded parts of Bangkok. It is similar in many ways to the sorts of excesses you’ll find in Khao San Road, but this isn’t the only reason you should visit.

It’s possible to pick up some real bargains on clothes and other accessories, as long as you’re happy to overlook the fact that much of it is counterfeit. You’ll also find plenty of street food vendors to choose from.

But most of all, I liked the Patpong market for the incredible atmosphere it offers , that you really do struggle to find elsewhere around the world.

It is open every day from around 6 pm till 1 am in the morning and it’s easy to get here by hailing a cheap taxi or tuk-tuk. Just be prepared to barter for everything you buy, as almost all vendors expect tourists and so inflate their prices accordingly.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Damnoen Saduak is a lively and colorful floating market along a picturesque canal that winds through the countryside in Ratchaburi province. It makes for the perfect day trip from Bangkok . Most people in the area grow fresh produce and live very close to the canal, which provides transport as well as water to irrigate their crops.

Get here early in the morning (between 8 am and 10 am is best) to see vendors hawking their wares from longtail boats as they glide through the water.

Some boats sell fresh Thai fruits and vegetables , while others sell delicious Thai food that’s cooked on the spot.

Although the market is widely known as Damnoen Saduak, this is actually the name for the canal itself. Along this canal, there are three floating markets: Ton Khem, Hia Kui, and Khun Phithak.

To visit the markets, the cheapest way is to just walk along the passage next to the canal for free. But if you want to be right in the thick of it, hire a boat to take you around.

To get here from Bangkok, take a bus from the Southern Bus Terminal. Buses leave every 40 minutes, starting at 6 am and cost about 50 baht each way.

I am visiting Bangkok again a week from now and I am excited. Though visiting markets isn’t in my itinerary this time, maybe I could steal a time and visit one of these. I am interested to visit the flower market because it is one of the best place to buy variety of fresh flowers for a good price.

Yeah, that’s one of the most beautiful and fragrant ones too.

That Maeklong Railway Market is amazing! How often are the trains? I’m going to have to see if I can find some videos of it as it would fascinate my kids 🙂

The trains are every 2-3 hours starting at 8:30 in the morning. And yes, there are tonnes of videos on YouTube. Your kids will definitely love it.

Very detailed guide, Soumya. I have been to like half of these. And my favourite, hand down, is Chatuchak. Not only for the stuff but also amazing food! God, the food there alone is worth going. One thing I am really glad I did before heading over to the market was to pick some bubble milk tea that was a life saver in the heat!

Frenetic Bangkok can be overwhelming for shoppers, but here’s a handy guide to help you find the best markets for you

1. chatuchak market.

The Chatuchak Market is open Saturdays and Sundays, 6am to 6pm. With over 15,000 booths selling everything from Thai art to antiques to fruit and veg, plants, ceramics and fresh meat, you could get lost in this expansive market – luckily you can pick up a map from one of the guards. Spend a day here shopping for gifts and sampling the food stalls as you go.

2. New Rot Fai Market

A buzzy night bazaar selling antiques, kitsch trinkets and street food. The New Rot Fai Market in Ratchada (not to be confused with the original Rod Fai Market Srinakarin Train Market , which is larger but harder to get to) is open Thursday to Sunday from 6 pm to midnight and is conveniently located near the Cultural Centre MRT Underground Station. Find something you like? Remember there is not set price for anything at the markets, so be ready to bargain with the stallholder.

3. Pak Khlong Talat

Bangkok’s bright flower market is open 24 hours. Even if you’re not in the, er, market for flowers, it’s a fun sight to see. Orchids and roses are a mainstay but you’ll also find aisle upon aisle of flowers in every shape, size and colour. If you’re serious about walking away with a specific bunch of flowers you’ll want to arrive early at 3 am when the boats and trucks arrive with their haul of flowers from the provinces surrounding Bangkok. If you just want to take in the atmosphere, then arrive from 8 pm.

4. Patpong Night Market

The Patpong Night Market is open daily from 6 pm to midnight. Bathed in electric light, this bustling night market is popular with tourists wanting to wander one of the more edgy corners of Bangkok; lined on either side as it is with Go-Go bars, their neon signs competing for attention. If the mood takes you, barter for fake designer goods, tourist T-shirts and souvenirs.

5. Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market

Around 23 kilometres south of the city, this small floating market is only accessible by taxi with most visitors being Thai locals. It’s a great place for an authentic slice of local life, with fresh food and traditional snacks on offer.

6. For vintage finds: Siam Gypsy Junction

Siam Gypsy Junction is open Wednesday-Sunday from 5 pm to 1 am. The markets have made a name for themselves as a vintage night market that has a sideline in excellent street food. It’s positioned right alongside the State Railway’s main track out of the city and trains regularly roar past. Typical Thai street food , hipster & vintage markets , stylish clothes and handmade souvenirs as well as antiques, all that and many more highlights can be found in the markets of Bangkok city. The selection is huge and certainly, because of a limited amount of time, not all of these can be visited. So, now you might ask yourself, “which night market in Bangkok should I visit?” and where are the must-go markets?

In this travel guide we will show you a list of the best night markets of Bangkok and which are currently the most popular ones! Additionally, you will get plenty of useful information about how to get there, opening hours, best places for shopping and good food.

When choosing a night market , you should plan before what you would like to experience. Besides the traditional street food markets, you will also find really cool vintage markets and modern night markets with fantastic restaurants and bars.

Simply incredible, but in Bangkok there are said to be over 40 night markets . A visit is one of the best things to do in Bangkok and absolutely worth it!

In general, the opening hours of these markets are from 5 pm to 1:00 am. Some night markets even close late in the early morning.

Asiatique the Riverfront

As a kind of shopping mall and night market mix, the Asiatique the Riverfront has nothing in common with a typical local Thai market. The location was artificially created only in 2012 and the pier and warehouses were modelled after ancient times. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that a visit is not less recommendable! The rather modern Bangkok night market is beautifully located right on the river and with a walk along the promenade you can enjoy a magnificent ambience. Inside the night market, you will find plenty of street food and more than 40 restaurants from all over the world. Furthermore, this night market is a fantastic place for shopping, finding great clothes and of course the popular Thailand souvenirs. The landmark of the market is the giant Ferris wheel , which offers a great view over Bangkok city.

Tip : Instead of taking a taxi, it is advisable to go there by boat . Experiencing Bangkok from the waterside is indescribably impressive and should not be missed.

Opening times : The Asiatique opens its doors daily from 16:00 – 00:00 o’clock.
How to get there: Skytrain (Silam Route) to Saphan Taksin Station and continue with the free shuttle boat to Asiatique the Riverfront.

Chang Chui Plane Market

Those who love the extraordinary should definitely visit the Chang Chui night market . Here you can expect a lot of art, interesting galleries , retro design , vintage and hipster stuff but also some delicious street food places and very cool bars. A walk in the grounds will surprise you with gigantic sculptures and ingeniously creative stores made from recycled materials. The heart of the Chang Chui Plane Market and one of the best Instagrammable places in Bangkok is an old airplane standing in the middle of the night market. It is a real eye-catcher and a great place for taking night markets pictures. In the evening, the mainly young and stylish audience meets out at the Night zone, which serves delicious cocktails and various types of draft beer! Visitors don’t only come here for shopping, the unique location attracts the crowds and so you can spend a few pleasant hours just strolling around, eating good food and enjoying cool drinks.

Tip : Although this night market in Bangkok is also open on weekdays, we still recommend a visit at weekend from 18:00, since then, all shops and bars are open.

How to get there : The easiest way is to take a taxi to Chang Chui Plane Market. Another option is taking the bus 515 or bus 539.

The One Ratchada (Train Night Market Ratchada)

The One Ratchada Night Market, formerly also known as Train Night Market Ratchada , is just as you would imagine a night market and a must-go in Bangkok. Lots of bustle and hustle through the streets, incredibly choice of cheap Thai street food, loud music and a massive selection of stalls and shops. Here you will find really cool vintage clothing and retro things , but also hip fashion, accessories, bags, and all kind of souvenirs. In addition to the eating mile, there are countless delicious restaurants and the bar mile bait with great happy hour offers . The Ratchada Night Market is mainly popular for locals, but that does not mean that no tourists will mix with the audience. Don’t search for a train: The Train Market takes its name from the former train market, which has been closed for some time now.

Khao San Road

Everyone knows the legendary Khao San Road : Backpackers settlement, nightlife district and night market all in one. The opinions about that place are quite different. It can be placed somewhere between “absolute tourist stupidity” and “a must-see”. One thing is clear, this street is the most famous in town. After sunset, it gets really busy and a tourist’s heart will find almost everything it desires. Fried insects, scorpionf on spit, alcohol buckets, beer stalls , countless bars , restaurants , street food and somewhere in between foot massage parlors and souvenir stalls. The Khao San has a buzzing nightlife and backpackers, vacationers as well as locals mingling in the crowd every night. Loud music is played on every corner, and the later the night, the better the mood. There is always something going on at Khao San Road, you can see a lot, eat deliciously, shop or just have a drink and have a great evening out.

Opening Hours : Every day as soon as the evening starts.
Directions : If you do not live directly in the immediate vicinity of the Khao San Road, it is advisable to get there by taxi.

Chinatown Night Market (Yaowarat Road)

When visiting Yaowarat Road in Chinatown Bangkok after sunset, the road turns into a night market cooking street food like no other. Chefs cook in front of their customers and create wonderful meals. Many of these exotic foods have never been seen before, and brave ones can taste their way through the food stalls. There are many yummy fruits, fresh juices, but also a variety of seafood and other, often unknown and rare Chinese delicacies . If you are up to try insects , sure you might find this “delicacies” at this night market. The whole atmosphere is really unique and walking through this night market is an outstanding experience . All the new scents, the hustle and bustle and the brightly lit billboards, which are already a real landmark of Chinatown, impress immensely.

How to get there : The nearest MRT station is Hua Lamphong. From there it takes about 15 minutes to walk to Yaowarat Road.

Neon Night Market (closed!)

A real insider tip, and a quite popular night market in Bangkok, is the Neon Night Market , also known as Talad Neon or Downtown Night Market. It is located on Phetchaburi Road, near the Platinum Fashion Mall. Every evening, this trendy night market opens its doors and enchants visitors with colorful neon lighting, which provides a mega hip flair. The stores, which are lined up in shipping containers, are really cool and give this night market an exceptional look. Here you can shop until you drop, and find ingenious unique items, kitsch, and curiosities. But there is also a huge selection of fashion , vintage clothing, shoes and homemade bags to admire. Fantastic, and moreover is the delicious street food and the cozy bars where you can enjoy the evening with a beer.

Directions : Take the BTS to Chit Lom Station or MRT to Phetchaburi Station.

Chatuchak Weekend Market (Friday Night Market)

Many already know the huge Chatuchak Weekend Market , which opens every Saturday and Sunday. However, did you know that every Friday there is a night market scheduled? Especially bargain hunters love the Chatuchak Friday Night market , as there are the products slightly cheaper than at the Chatuchak weekend market. This night market mainly sells clothing, vintage fashion, shoes, handbags, and accessories. It opens quite late and starting from 22:00 clock it gets packed. Because the shops close at 3:00 in the morning, this Friday Night Market is the perfect place for late night shopping in Bangkok!

Tip : Nevertheless, we recommend visiting the Weekend Market at Chatuchak!

Patpong Night Market

Patpong night market is located near BTS Station Sala Daeng and is probably one of Bangkok’s best-known night markets. It is located near Silom Road, and it is easily accessible by BTS or taxi. The only drawback is that this night market is a bit away from the path, and you need long for getting there. Here you will find plenty of rarities , vintage cars and cool retro clothes , but also good food and some bars. We recommend planning a visit to this night market on the weekend. A great place for all, who are looking for really unusual things to buy.

Opening Hours : The Rod Fai Night Market is open Thursday through Sunday from 17:00 to 01:00.
How to get there : By taxi to Srinakarin Soi 51, just behind the Seacon Square shopping center.

Bangkok night markets should be on everyone’s hit list. Many of the night markets in Bangkok provide far more than just a shopping experience. In Thailand food is a major part of every market, but in recent years the most trendy markets have become known as full on eating and drinking destinations. Bangkok is teeming with great night markets – all over the city and on every night of the week.

This article is in the process of being updated as many of Bangkok’s night markets have been severely impacted by COVID-19. Some have shut down, while other night markets are going through changes to survive based on local customers.

The best night markets in Bangkok are those that still have a local vibe, but they come in all shapes and sizes, so there’s bound to be something for you. They’re for more than just shopping, too – at Bangkok’s best night markets, you’ll find delicious Thai street food and even bars serving up cheap beers and cocktails. Many of the markets located further out from the center of Bangkok cater mainly for a young and creative Thai audience and provide a more trendy local experience. Many more central markets have also had to re-invent themselves in the absence of tourism.

Talat Rot Fai Srinakarin (The Train Market)

Talat Rot Fai (the Train Night Markets) is arguably the biggest, most famous and most popular of all the Bangkok night markets. Now open for around a decade, Talat Rot Fai got its name from its original location on disused Thai state railway line in Saphan Khwai, near the popular Chatuchak weekend daytime market . After the organisers got their marching orders from that side of town, they upped sticks and set up as Srinakarin Train Market behind the Seacon Square shopping centre on Srinakarin Road in the east of Bangkok.

Why Visit: A real local hangout if you want to make the trip out from the centre, with a great selection of food and bars

Opening Times: Thursday to Sunday, 5pm-1am

How to get there: Take the BTS to Udom Suk station, then a taxi to Seacon Square (the market is directly behind and well signposted)

Jodd Fairs – NEW MARKET

Jodd Fairs is a new market opened by the owners of Talat Rot Rai Ratchada which recently closed down. Jodd Fairs is located very near the old market. More details coming soon.

Talat Rot Fai Ratchada (The Train Market) – PERMANENTLY CLOSED DOWN

Ratchada Train Market opened more recently, in a more central location behind the Esplanade shopping centre behind the Thailand Cultural Center MRT subway station. Though these days there is less emphasis on retro goods, both locations of Talat Rot Fai (the Train Night Markets) stock a wide range of street clothing and vintage-style household decorations, among much more besides, as well as plenty of options for chowing down on Thai street food. There are even Volkswagen camper vans and similar vintage vehicles doubling up as cool cocktail cars, as well as a growing number of bricks-and-mortar bars.

Why Visit: Great choice of food and bars and very easy to get to if staying in Sukhumvut area

Klong San Night Market – PERMANENTLY CLOSED DOWN

Khlong San Night Market is one of our favourite night markets in Bangkok, on the site of a former Thai railway station, and we visit it on our Bangkok Night Lights evening tuk tuk tour . As a result of this history, there is still easy access by river boat to the pier that sits at the far end of the market. Nowadays, Khlong San Night Market is popular with young studenty types looking for the latest cheap fashion and make-up accessories, but the market has a good deal of choice to interest others too.

There is plenty of standard Thai market fare to munch on at Khlong San Night Market, while on the outer reaches of the market a number of bars have pleasant views over the Chaophraya river and make for a relaxed spot to end your evening.

Why Visit: If you are after cheap fashion accessories or simply in the area (very convenient location by the river and next to Icon Siam)

Opening Times: Daily, 7am – 9pm (busiest early evening when people are coming back from work)

How to get there: Take the cross-river ferry from Si Phraya pier (you can reach Si Phraya pier on the Chaophraya Express river boat from Sathorn pier and elsewhere)

Siam Gypsy Junction Night Market

Siam Gypsy Junction Night Market is one of the newest additions to the Bangkok night markets scene, set way out in the capital’s northern reaches, but these days easily accessible from the newly opened MRT purple line subway station at Bang Son. Even before public transport made it more convenient to get to, Siam Gypsy Junction Night Market was popular with in-the-know locals, both from the immediate area and from further afield across Bangkok.

Siam Gypsy Junction Night Market is a vintage market that has a feeling much like the original Talat Rot Fai (Train Night Market) in Saphan Khwai, which has since relocated to the Srinakarin and Ratchada areas (see above). There is also a wild-west theme going on over here at Siam Gypsy Junction Night Market, with a number of saloon-style bars getting in on the action. Other memorable drinking options include a converted school bus with tables up on the roof, and a pleasant bar with an almost reggae feel set under a cabana-style thatched palm tree shelter.

Siam Gypsy Junction Night Market itself is one long stretch of road, with classic motorbikes competing with pedestrians for right of way and the first look at a large collection of vintage clothing, furniture, household decorations and other trinkets. There are also a number of food stalls and restaurants to fulfil your hunger cravings.

Patpong Night Market – MAINLY CLOSED

Patpong Night Market is perhaps one of the most well known Bangkok night, particularly among those newly arrived in the city, is Patpong. Wedged between Silom and Surwaong roads and infamous for the nearby raucuous nightlife scene as much as its shopping possibilities, Patpong Night Market nonetheless offers the chance to pick up plenty of clothing, fashion accessories and more.

Just remember that any designer goods you snag here are unlikely to be the real thing, so come with this in mind and expect to bargain hard – this is prime territory for late-night tourist shoppers, and as a result prices start high. All the same, it’s a fun environment and there are plenty of great restaurants and lively bars and clubs in the area, where you can continue your night once you’ve had your shopping fix.

Opening Times: Daily, 6pm-1am

Asiatique The Riverfront Night Market

Asiatique The Riverfront Night Market is entirely different from most Bangkok night markets, much less rough around the edges. Asiatique The Riverfront Night Market is a distinctly higher-class, open-air shopping centre and entertainment venue set in a number of converted warehouses at what was once an international port.

As well as countless vendors with a focus on both fashion and handicrafts, you’ll also find plenty of eating and drinking possibilities, plus cabaret and traditional Thai cultural performances; there’s even a large ferris wheel with views over the Chaophraya river and further across Bangkok. Asiatique’s shops and stalls are well organised into different zones, and there’s even a map that will help you find the one you’re looking for – this really is a different experience from most Bangkok night markets!

The market is located a few minutes downriver from the Sathorn express boat pier at Saphan Taksin BTS station; a free shuttle boat transfer is provided (until 11pm) and allows you to escape the traffic, though be aware that queues for the shuttle can get very long at peak times. Asiatique The Riverfront is open daily from 5pm to midnight.

How to get there: Take the BTS Skytrain to Saphan Taksin, then take the free shuttle boat (runs until 11pm) from the adjoining Sathorn express boat pier

Talad Neon Night Market – PERMANENTLY CLOSED DOWN

Talad Neon Night Market is located in the Pratunam area close to Chitlom, and is one of the newest arrivals on the Bangkok night markets scene. It’s a young-feeling market that follows the trend, initially brought to town by the ArtBox popup markets in 2016, of vendors operating from within industrial-type shipping containers.

Talad Neon Night Market is a big market, selling a wide range of everything from vintage wares to clothing and, of course, plenty of food and drink – plus, with the clue in the name, plenty of neon lighting to add a nightclub vibe. The market is apparently the work of the owners of nearby Platinum fashion mall and, while it was initially touted as a temporary market, it remains to be seen whether it will stick around.

Opening Times: Wednesday to Sunday, 4pm-midnight

How to get there: Take the BTS Skytrain to Chitlom or Ratchathewi; Talad Neon Night Market is a short walk away, on Phetchaburi Road between sois 23 and 29.

Suan Lum Ratchada Night Market

Suan Lum Ratchada Night Market fills the legendary position in Bangkok night markets history that was vacated by the original Suan Lum night market, the city’s largest ever, opposite Lumpini Park in the downtown Phloen Chit/Sathorn area. This equally huge new replacement market – complete with almost two thousand vendors and restaurants – is located over in Lat Phrao, in northern Bangkok.

If you’re planning to visit the Suan Lum Ratchada Night Market, you can expect the usual mainstay of clothing, jewellery, and retro and vintage goods. There’s also plenty of entertainment, in forms not often seen at Bangkok’s night markets, like Thai boxing and magic shows, as well as more common live music. Of course, this being one of Bangkok’s markets, there are also more than enough stalls dishing out Thai street food staples to keep your hunger sated.

Opening Times: Daily, 4pm-midnight

How to get there: Take the MRT subway to Lat Phrao; Suan Lum Ratchada Night Market is a short walk away, at the Ratchada-Lat Phrao intersection.

Chang Chui Night Market (The Plane Night Market)

Chang Chui Night Market is far more than just another market, with so much going on that it’s probably easier to talk about what it’s not. Located all the way over on Sirindhorn Road in the far reaches of Bangkok’s former-capital Thonburi district on the other side of the Chaophraya river (Chang Chui Night Market is only just on the Bangkok side of the border with neighbouring Nonthaburi province), since Chang Chui Night Market first threw open its doors in June 2017 it has perhaps been most well known among Bangkokians and the clued-up visitors alike for the attention-grabbing full-size disused aeroplane that sits at the site’s centre. In fact, the venue is already even being popularly referred to in English as the ‘plane market’.

Chang Chui Night Market is widely billed as a ‘creative hub’ rather than purely a night market, and indeed the enormous site is made up of various segments that operate exist independently of one another, with staggered openings throughout the day according to the nature of their operations before they ultimately become part of the one bigger venue of Chang Chui Night Market as a whole.

Huamum Night Market is a new opening in the northern Bangkok neighbourhood of Lat Phrao, and is a relatively off-the-radar night market with a local vibe. Yes, the goods you’ll find for sale at Huamum Night Market are along much the same lines as you’ll find at popular Bangkok night markets elsewhere – everything from clothing and shoes to homewares and cute trinkets – but that doesn’t mean they are the typical tourist tack common in some places. Indeed, the vast majority of visitors to Huamum Night Market are locals – don’t expect much in the way of English-language signage – and an additional benefit to that is that it’s likely you’ll come across some slightly cheaper prices than elsewhere.

Nothing makes Bangkok night markets more appealing to local tastes than an awesome selection of street food to graze on between shopping stints, and Huamum Night Market excels here, with an array of market staples and more, from desserts and snacks to noodles and seafood. The market has also become renowned for one (possibly not so family-friendly!) novelty shellfish restaurant in particular, Staneemeehoi, where waiters come in the form of singing, dancing hunky men scantily clad in tutus, tight vests, bath towels, and even plastic bags fashioned into dresses.

Liab Duan Night Market

Liab Duan Night Market’s name translates as ‘the market beside the expressway’ (which it is). While it might not be a brand new opening, it remains new and unheard of by plenty of visitors to Bangkok. The shipping-container stalls give the game away: Artbox is a pop-up weekend night market that opens temporarily in one place for months, then lies low until it pops up again elsewhere. Its present location in Chuvit Gardens will serve until Nov. 30.

For now, Artbox adds nicely to Sukhumvit Soi 10’s already diverse shopping scene. The stuff here focuses on handmade and vintage goods, with an emphasis on local designers.

Getting there : Take the BTS Skytrain to Nana Station or Asok Station. After November 30, consult their Facebook page to see where they’ll pop up next.

Talad Rod Fai Srinakarin

The Train Market takes its name from its original incarnation on an abandoned railway yard near the Chatuchak market. Despite its move to Srinakarin Road Soi 51, the name stuck, and still serves as a local byword for retro night markets.

The vibe at Rot Fai Srinakarin leans towards classic, vintage, retro—found in its handmade artisanal goods, antique collectibles, and gently-worn secondhand items.

Real collectors should head over to Rod’s Antiques, a warehouse filled with genuine antique collectibles that fetch high prices to match.

Getting there: Take the BTS Skytrain to Udom Suk Station, then ride a taxi to Seacon Square.

Chang Chui Creative Park

Chang Chui Creative Park, or the plane market gets its nickname from the junked L-1011 TriStar Lockheed plane parked in its midst.

The Na-Oh Fine Dining Restaurant set inside the plane only scratches the surface of what makes Chang Chui a great food and drink stop: elsewhere you’ll find a unique fine dining restaurant serving insects , a refined tea house , and several craft beer bars with a staggeringly wide selection between them all.

Spend the rest of your evening looking through Chang Chui’s upscale shops—or take a selfie at the modern sculptures scattered around the grounds.

Getting there: There are no BTS or MRT stations stop near Chang Chui; take a taxi to the site.

Operating hours: Thursday to Tuesday; daytime “green zone” opens between 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., “night zone” opens between 4 to 11 p.m.

Neon Night Bazaar

Following in the industrial-meets-quirky trend initiated by Artbox, the Neon Night Bazaar lights up the downtown Pratunam district with its own youth-oriented market experience.

The usual range of phone cases, bags, clothes, and souvenirs litter the market stalls, all bathed in a bright neon glow from the lights that gave the place its name. Potent drinks can be enjoyed at the bars set throughout the market, all located in shipping containers.

Guests below drinking age can also enjoy the bazaar, with a carousel, Ferris wheel, and petting zoo.

Getting there: Ride the BTS Skytrain to Chitlom or Ratchathewi Stations, then walk down Phetchaburi Road to the location between sois 23 and 29.

Operating hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 4 p.m. to midnight.

Talad Rod Fai Ratchada

Inspired by the success of the first Train Market, this second version opened much closer to downtown Bangkok, its smaller size outweighed by its easier access.

Like its predecessor, Talad Rot Fai Ratchada has a retro, vintage feel that reflects in the items on sale. Come to look through the market’s used goods and antiques, vintage wear, and collectibles. Afterward, drink up from one of the bars located in old vehicles, or have some Thai street food at any of the restaurants or snack stalls nearby.

Getting there: Take the MRT to Thailand Cultural Center, then walk to the market location.

Talad Liab Duan: Locals’ Favorite

The adjacent Chalong Rat Expressway gives Talad Liab Duan its name (literally “by the highway” in Thai). Its unassuming location matches its down-to-earth appeal: Liab Duan caters to locals who come for its cheap second-hand items, knock-off merchandise, and Thai street food.

With hundreds of neatly-lined stalls packed in a 6-acre lot, visitors to Talad Liab Duan can expect to spend hours just browsing through the wares. Many of the items are sold from low-slung bae kar din (in Thai, “selling from the ground”) and you'll encounter many sellers hawking cellphone cases and hilariously misspelled, fake branded goods.

Getting there: Take a taxi to get to Talad Liab Duan, as it’s nowhere near any BTS or MRT stops.

Operating hours: Daily, 6 p.m. to midnight.

Asiatique the Waterfront

A series of riverside warehouses were converted into one of Bangkok’s most upscale night markets. Asiatique the Waterfront maximizes its Chao Phraya-side location—filling its open spaces and built structures with upscale dining and al fresco street chow ; artisanal shops and flea-market bargains; and endless entertainment options.

About 1,500 stalls and 40 restaurants can be found within the warehouse complex, organized within four distinct zones. Go shopping at the Factory District, or dine at the riverside Waterfront District and the Down Square District.

If shopping isn’t your thing, enjoy the Calypso Cabaret show at the Chareonkrung District, or take a ride on the brightly-lit, 200-foot-high Asiatique Sky observation wheel .

Getting there: Take the BTS Skytrain to Saphan Taksin Station, then go to Sathorn pier to ride the free shuttle boat to Asiatique; the service runs from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Suan Lum Night Bazaar

This is the second incarnation of the Suan Lum Bazaar, Bangkok's biggest night market; the first was a massive affair located on Rama IV Road near Lumpini Park that was shut down in 2011. With some 2,000 stalls, Suan Lum 2.0 retains the size and scope of the original.

Expect the usual range of clothing, accessories, souvenirs, household goods, jewelry, and crafts— haggle down the prices to get the best value.

Suan Lum’s entertainment sets it apart from most other night markets—the market offers a wide range of diversions from Muay Thai tournaments to the Playhouse Cabaret Ladyboy Show.

Getting there: Take the MRT and disembark at Lad Phrao Station.

Chinatown/Yaowarat Road

Yaowarat Road is a night market specifically devoted to the love of Chinese food: hundreds of stalls on both sides of the thoroughfare hawk freshly-made noodles, seafood, dim sum, and desserts. The street stays open until after 2 a.m., allowing you to get your noodle and seafood fix deep into the night.

After dark, a section of the massive Chatuchak Weekend Market stays open for shoppers preferring to do their hunting in the cooler night air. It’s a shadow of the complete Chatuchak experience, but for teens and fashionistas looking for cheap but trendy clothes and accessories, it’ll do.

The Friday Night Market occupies Sections 8 to 26 of the Chatuchak complex, staying open until early Saturday morning. To really get in the swing of things, arrive between 10 and 11 p.m. to see the place really come to life.

Alternatively, you can explore Chinatown and Khao San Road by night, however, these places don’t offer the shopping options that the others do.

Besides, it’s not even a designated area like the first five mentioned night markets.

Chatuchak is also kind of an alternative option when it comes to night markets.

But on the weekends, it’s an amazing market to visit during the day as well as during the dawn. On Friday evening, there are limited options, which we shall explain in detail further down this article.

Before COVID struck Bangkok, Ratchada Train Night Market was by far the most popular market, however, it depended hugely on tourists which were not there for almost two years.

As a result, the organization of Ratchada had to close the market. But once the borders of Thailand were open for tourists again, the organization picked a new and more convenient area where it modernized the market and rebranded it as Jodd Fairs.

Although the recognizable coloured tents are gone and replaced by simple white tents, the quality of the tents has improved and so do the vendors.

The popular vendors from the previous Ratchada market still sell their goods and foods, but many new vendors have found a spot at the market too.

In the middle section, visitors can walk around and find all sorts of goods, ranging from clothes, sunglasses and handcrafted jewellery. At the outer stands of the market, there is an abundance of food and drinks.

There are more than six hundred food vendors to be found at this market, which offer street and finger food as well as a dine-in experience.

While the previous Ratchada Train Market offered an area with loud bars, Jodd Fairs offer a more subtle bar area , which we believe makes the market far more accessible for people. But rest assured, there are plenty of bars with live music that keep you entertained until midnight.

Jodd Fairs is located behind a shopping mall called Central Plaza Grand Rama 9 and you can easily access it by taking the metro (MRT) to MRT Station Phra Nam 9 . The previously Ratchada Train Market was located just one metro station further.

!!! Important : Jodd Fairs is by far the most popular one and it gets busy real easy. Getting a taxi back is also a pain in the butt, due to increased traffic.

So, it’s important to know that there are many night markets and thus alternatives.

Personally, I would highly recommend choosing Srinakarin, Chang Chui, and The One over Jodd Fairs. These markets are busy too, but not as crowded as Jodd Fairs.

The colourful tents are gone, a well-organized night market has returned.

Iconic dishes such as the Leng Zabb at Tiao Mae Klong also are back at Jodd Fairs.

2. Srinakarin Train Night Market – Vintage, antiques and plenty of food!

Srinakarin Train Night Market is a night market in Bangkok from the same organization as the previously recommended Jodd Fairs. In fact, Srinakarin is older than Ratchada, which had to be closed because of the lack of visitors during COVID.

As night markets need quite some space to put all those vendors in one area, night markets are often located a bit outside the main city centre. So, as you might have guessed, to visit Srinakarin, you have to travel a bit. But it’s definitely worth the trip and here is why:

Compared to Ratchada back then and Jodd Fairs now, the night market at Srinakarin is far more laid-back and this is because it’s a much larger market that is definitely not as crowded as Jodd Fairs. And as it’s located a bit outside the city centre, the majority of its visitors are Thai, so you will experience a more authentic vibe compared to Jodd Fairs.

The market itself is divided into several sections, where at the start of the market, you can find an abundance of street and finger food. Walking further the market, you will find mainly vendors that sell clothes, sunglasses, flip-flops, souvenirs and gadgets. But then there is the best part of Srinakarin: vintage stores . Srinakarin is known for its vintage stores which are located in modernized old buildings and just walking around looking at cool vintage goods is an experience on its own.

Once you’re hungry and you want a decent meal, you visit the outer parts of the market where you find actual restaurants either inside or on a shipping container or inside an actual brick building. And at the far end of the market, there is an area where you can spot oldtimers and hot rod cars but also more vintage and antique stores.

In order to get to Srinakarin, for most tourists, your best bet is to take the BTS to On Nut and from there, take a taxi. Srinakarin Train Night Market is located in the direction of Suvarnabhumi Airport. In the near future, there will be BTS Line that takes you straight to this market, however, the construction of this line is not finished yet.

As said earlier, night markets in Bangkok, especially the larger ones, are located outside the city centre. But compared to all these tiny night markets that won’t blow you away, Chang Cui Plane Night Market is absolutely worth the travel. Why? Because the concept is so unique, you won’t find a market like this elsewhere.

As the name suggests, Chang Chui Plane Market is built around a large airplane, a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar of which the interior is completely removed. They decorated the interior completely with antiques and when you want to get out of the plane, you simply take the slide. Around this plane, you can find eighteen separate buildings made from recycled materials.

The whole market is well-organized and offers more upscale drink and food options compared to the other night markets in Bangkok, but it’s all worth it. They even serve food made with insects.

But aside from the big aeroplane right in the centre, the market is also known for its art and decorations.

Especially the scrap metal art pieces are impressive. You can find a vintage cinema , several trendy shops and plenty of food and drink venues that serve craft beers and richly filled cocktails . The only downside is that it’s located a bit away from the city centre, namely at Taling Chan.

The closest MRT Station is Bang Son MRT, which is still a fifteen-minute drive away from the market. But you won’t regret this visit!

Tip #1 : the market is open during the day, however, in the evening when it’s dark, the ambient lighting brings the market to the next level when it comes to atmosphere.

Tip #2 : for those who are excited about aeroplanes, there is a cafe in Lat Krabang where you can get coffee inside an old Boeing 747. You even get a flight ticket when you order a coffee here. The name of this cafe is 747 Aeroplane Cafe .

4. The One Ratchada Night Market – Your go-to-market before exploring Bangkok’s nightlife

The newest night market in Bangko k is located in a well-known area, namely where the old Ratchada Train Night Market was located. On the exact same ground where the hugely popular and somewhat famous Ratchada market was held is now The One Ratchada. To be clear, it’s not the same organization as Jodd Fairs nor Srinakarin, but a completely new organization .

One of the biggest differences between Jodd Fairs and The One, as these two are from now on competitors, is that The One is a much larger market than Jodd Fairs. But size doesn’t always matter. Like all the other night markets, there is an abundance of (street) food , although not as extensive as Jodd Fairs and even the previous Ratchada Night Market. Jodd Fairs does have a few famous vendors, but the food at The One is definitely of an equal standard.

Aside from food, visitors can shop until they drop, although there is not a vintage section like at Srinakarin. Overall, The One has to prove itself against Jodd Fairs and Srinakarin. And we honestly believe this market will be a success based on three things.

First of all, the market is much larger than most other night markets, which allows you to stroll around in comfort.

Secondly, the market is a modern market of the same quality as Jodd Fairs.

Lastly, and this is the part that will set The One apart from the rest, there is a good vibe where people can enjoy cheap drinks and listen to either live music or EDM. The previous Ratchada Night Market was so popular among Thai as it was the perfect place to grab a few drinks before going out . The One Ratchada is trying to replicate that experience and they do a great job.

If you want to try out both Jodd Fairs and The One Ratchada, they are only one MRT Station (Thailand Cultural Centre MRT) away from each other. You can find The One Ratchada Night Market next to The Esplanade Bangkok.

5. Indy Night Market – Local market with great bars

This night market is located on the opposite side of the river in an area called Thonburi. As it’s located so far away from the common areas that foreigners usually visit, it’s an authentic night market where you barely find any tourists.

Usually, we don’t recommend these markets as it can be quite the hassle to reach the place, however, Indy Night Market is not only a relatively new market, it’s a pretty good market too.

Good news for those who love shopping : there is a huge variety of goods that are being sold. From clothes to sunglass and from leather shoes to handcrafts. You name it, they probably have it. If you’re looking for a unique back that fits your new dress, have a look at Indy Night Market.

Then, there is the food. Like all the other larger markets, there is so much food. From street food to actual restaurants where they often offer buffets , it’s there at Indy Night Market. As this market basically solely caters to the Thai living nearby, expect to find authentic Thai food as well as some somewhat unusual dishes with for example octopus heads. But a simple seafood barbecue is available too.

But the best part is the bar area . After wandering around and you might already be thirsty, most visitors love to enjoy some ice-cold beers or a set of mixers while listening to live music. The atmosphere is much different compared to The One Ratchada as the audience here is basically one hundred percent Thai, and that also means you will listen to live Thai music .

As always, the shopping takes place in the middle of the market while the bar and restaurant areas are located on the outskirts of the market. The market in general is quite large, although not as large as for example Srinakarin. As it’s a relatively new market, it’s a modern and clean market that invites you to visit it frequently.

Especially if you’re staying around the riverside of Bangkok, it’s definitely worth checking out. In the end, it’s a bit of a journey to reach the market. The best way for most travellers is to take the BTS to Wongwian Yai Station and from there, take a taxi to Indi Night Market or take a taxi straight to the market.

Tip : As Indy Night Market is known for it’s party-minded atmosphere, during Songkran, the festivities are held at the market as well. For those who don’t know, Songkran is Thai New Year and is being held at least between the 13th and 15th of April and is basically one large water gun fight.

As the name suggests, the market is only open on the weekends and visitors go on a shopping spree at stalls that offer art, clothes, antiques, vintage, souvenirs and jewellery.

But those who just love to go window-shopping can also fill their stomach at street food stalls, which are countless to be found here. For the majority of tourists, this is common knowledge, but what most tourists don’t know is that the market is already open on Friday evening.

Unfortunately, the majority of the stalls are closed on Friday evening , but there are some shops open and as it’s so unknown to many people, Friday evenings at Chatuchak are laid-back and you can do a bit of shopping without being walked over.

And if you’re interested to buy some art , the best time to visit Chatuchak is on Friday evening as the art section is open. Afterwards, head over to one of the funky bars to sip on strong cocktails or drink a few cheap ice-cold beers.

And when hungry, there is a good variety of street food to choose from.

Compared to the previously recommended night markets, Chatuchak does not offer as much shopping, otherwise, it would be far more crowded. But it’s still worth the visit for those who want to avoid the crowds.

For the full shopping experience, visit Chatuchak Weekend Market on either Saturday or Sunday. And if you still want to avoid the crowds on those days, visit the market in the late afternoon as most visitors tend to visit early to avoid the heat.

Although not the size of Srinakarin or Chatuchak, if you do want to pick a local night market in Bangkok, then definitely visit Hua Mum Night Market. The market has plenty to offer that other recommended markets also have.

There are shops, and an abundance of (street) food, drinks and music. But it’s definitely not as fancy as for example Chang Chui Plane Night Market or as well-organized as Jodd Fairs.

But as it’s located in Lat Phrao , which is north of the city centre, away from the main touristic areas, you won’t find (m)any tourists here. In other words, if you want to experience how night markets are where only Thai come to visit, then head over to Hua Mum.

And when it comes to shopping, there is a large area that offers everything you can possibly think of finding at a market.

Before, Hua Mum night market was the perfect hidden gem, but over the years, it does get discovered by non-Thai a tiny bit more, although the majority of the tourists end up at Jodd Fairs or maybe Srinakarin.

If you want to see the local parts of the city, a visit to Hua Mum is highly recommended. And to top that local experience with one of the weirdest restaurants in the city, head over to Stanee Mee Hoi , which is located at the market. It’s a restaurant where the male waiters serve the food shirtless and make freaky dance moves and noises. As you might expect, this restaurant is packed with young Thai girls who do appreciate the joke of it.

In order to get to Hua Mum Night Market, take the MRT to Lat Phrao MRT Station and take a taxi to the market, which is about a fifteen-minute drive. Unfortunately, there is no public transport that leads you straight to the market.

Alternative #1: Chinatown – Street food area

If you want to visit a proper night market in Bangkok, in my personal opinion, Chinatown does not count as one and here is why. So far, all the recommended night markets are designated areas that’s been designed to let visitors enjoy food, drinks and shopping in a small area where they can socialize and enjoy live music. That concept does not apply to Chinatown nor to the next recommended area.

But, Chinatown does offer an abundance of street food and is one of the top activities tourists do during the evening in Bangkok. That’s why several websites act as if it’s a night market, but we see it more as an alternative to night markets.

Yes, you can wander around the busy streets of this part of the city and there are plenty of shops too.

But it’s not the exact same experience you will have compared to markets like Jodd Fairs, Srinakarin and Chang Chui. During the day, you can visit these shops too namely. And most tourists will visit Chinatown anyway as it’s such an important and simultaneously different part of Bangkok.

So, if you have the time to visit one of the night markets we recommended earlier and visit Chinatown at night another day, we highly recommend you do so. You will notice for yourself that Chinatown and Khao San Road (the next alternative) are completely different from actual night markets.

Why Chinatown is a great alternative to night markets in Bangkok:

When it comes to street food, Chinatown is among the best areas in Bangkok.
Plenty of shops, souvenirs and even a fresh market, but does not feel like a typical night market like the others.

Opening times : 18:00 – 01:00 Daily, some famous street food shops are closed on Monday.

Alternative #2: Khao San Road – Nightlife area

Similar to Chinatown, Khao San Road is not a designated area like the night markets recommended in this article.

While Chinatown offers far more variation of street food, Khao San Road offers more clothes, flip-flops, sunglasses and other goods that you can find at night markets, but it’s mostly targeted young Western travellers.

Of course, the nightlife scene is much wilder than any other night market, but Khao San Road does not feel like a night market.

If you’re into partying, Khao San Road is an excellent area to explore some street food, do some shopping and end up getting hammered at one of the many bars.

And even though the street itself is completely renovated, it’s not the kind of evening activity you bring all your family to.

Again, if you have the time to visit one of the night markets we recommended earlier and visit Khao San Road at night another day, we highly recommend you do so.

Why Khao San Road is a great alternative to night markets in Bangkok:

a vibrant nightlife area that’s hugely popular among young Thai and tourists with plenty of street food
a decent variety of shopping options for tourists
but it’s not a designated market nor a full market.

Khao San Road is a popular area to stay at during the night, especially for the younger generations.

Alternative #3: Khlong Ong Ang Walking Street – Fun little market with street art

Technically speaking, Ong Ang is a night market, yes. However, compared to all the other markets in this article, Ong Ang is actually just a (walking) street. However, if you’re looking for something unique that doesn’t take that much time, Ong Ang is a great “market” to visit. And although it did not get an enthusiastic introduction, it is in fact quite a cool place. Let me tell you why.

In 2020, this part of a relatively poor district of Bangkok was finally opened as it underwent a full revitalization. The so-called Khlong (a canal) was completely cleaned up and a proper road on both sides of the canal was built along with bridges and nice fences. Honestly, the government did an amazing job and it almost feels like it’s not Bangkok but a European city.

One of the coolest things, aside from hunting for some souvenirs and street food, is witnessing street art. In this part of Bangkok, as well as other older parts such as Talad Noi, you can wander through the older alleys and see spectacular mural paintings and graffiti. When wandering around, make sure to take a picture at the Chinese Lantern Alley , which you can find on Google Maps. If you want to try eating food from a not-so-common gastronomy, head over to Little Bhutan , which is located right in the middle of Ong Ang Walking Street.

Overall, it’s fun to see this market if you pass by it. The ambient lighting makes it worth visiting when it’s dark. The best way to go to Khlong Ong Ang Walking Street is by taking the metro to the nearby Sam Yot MRT Station .

Tip : Visiting Khlong Ong Ang Walking Street can easily be combined with a visit to Chinatown. The so-called Pak Khlong Talat (Flower Market) , which is a popular tourist attraction, is also located nearby.

When planning accordingly, you can visit these three markets on the same evening without much hassle. Both the Flower Market and Khlong Ong Ang Walking Street are not markets where you spend hours wandering around.

Chinatown on the other hand is exciting to discover. After a full stomach, make sure to check out Soi Nana (Chinatown, not Sukhumvit) where you can find a bit of nightlife and unique (cocktail) bars.

More than 1,000 animals killed as fire rips through famous Bangkok market

More than 1,000 exotic animals, reptiles and pets have perished in a sprawling market in Thailand's capital Bangkok after a fire ripped through over 100 shops, authorities say.

The blaze ravaged about 1,300 square metres of the Chatuchak Weekend Market, killing animals including snakes, spiders and Siamese fighting fish, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt told reporters.

Some 118 shops were burnt down and an initial inspection suggests that the fire was caused by an electrical fault, police Superintendent Phuwadon Ounpho said.

The fire is believed to have started in the ornamental fish zone in Srisomrat Market, adjacent to the bigger Chatuchak, at about 4am, local time, according to Tivakorn Prongseng, a police inspector investigating the case.

Firefighters and rescue workers on Tuesday picked through carcasses, mangled cages, blackened walls and collapsed metal shop roofs.

A medic treated a chicken near the smouldering ruins of one row of shops, according to a Reuters witness.

The fire was extinguished by 6am on Tuesday, Inspector Tivakorn said.

"I'm shocked. I feel like crying, but there are no tears," Siamese fighting fish shop owner Suwannee Sangdee, 49, who fears her small establishment has been left in ruins and all her precious fish dead.

"Now I have to think about what's next."

A shop employee, 36-year-old Meecha had to jump out of the window to escape from the fire, according to Thai media website Thaiger.

"I was sleeping in the loft above the shop when I heard the cries of various animals. Suddenly, thick smoke filled the air, making it impossible to breathe."

Meecha's shop housed rare birds, including a prized cockatoo valued at 30,000 baht ($1,200).

Officials said they were still working on estimating the cost of damage, and that affected shop owners could register for compensation.

Mr Sittipunt said people could help affected shop owners by offering to house surviving animals.

The market is a top tourist draw, bringing in shoppers from all over the world to browse its hundreds of shops and stalls for items ranging from food and drink to clothing, furniture, plants, books and pets.

Fires have previously damaged sections of the Chatuchak market.

Animal welfare concerns

The pet zone of the market has often been criticised for the animals' poor living conditions.

The Wildlife Friends Foundation in Thailand urged stricter regulations and enforcement of animal rights in a statement issued after the fire.

Edwin Wiek, the NGO's director described the Chatuchak market as a "shame on Bangkok".

"It has been allowed to continue selling animals unethically and often illegally for far too long," he said in the statement.

"Many of these poor animals are smuggled into the country, often illegally. It is immoral, cruel, a health and safety hazard, and completely unnecessary.

"We are urging the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to act now and stop this place from selling animals, particularly wild animals.

"We deeply hope this disaster brings about the permanent closure of the live animal trading at Chatuchak market."

Wildlife organisations have also accused some vendors of involvement in the trafficking of rare and endangered species, such as turtles, tortoises and birds.
