About the author

Brian sibley.

I have been a professional writer for thirty years and a freelance broadcaster for the BBC in London for almost as long.

My career began as a radio-writer with dramatisations for the BBC which include serialisations of J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings", C. S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia" and Mervyn Peake's "Titus Groan" and "Gormenghast" for which I won a coveted Sony Radio Award. I have also made radio programmes on a wide variety of topics from the history of magic to the crimes of Jack the Ripper! Series of note include "A Century of Cinema", "The Sound of Movies" and "'Ain't No Mickey Mouse Business!"

My specialist interests have always been film (in particular animation) and children's literature and I have broadcast numerous radio and TV programmes and written several books about both these topics.

For the best part of a decade I presented weekly arts and film programmes on the BBC's domestic and World Service networks but have spent the last few years concentrating on books including a couple of best-sellers on the making of Peter Jackson's film trilogy, "The Lord of the Rings" and researching and writing that director's authorised biography, scheduled for publication in 2006.

I live in London with my life partner, a professional magician, in a house overcrowded with so many books, DVDs and CDs (not to mention all those old videos and gramophone records!) that it is seriously beginning to look like one of Amazon.com's smaller warehouses!

  • Trivia The production team returned to the same shooting location for Hobbiton as they used in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The land is part of a farm, which the owners allowed to be transformed into the Hobbiton set by The Lord of the Rings production crew in the late 1990s. After filming wrapped on the first trilogy, the farm's owners turned the land into a Tolkien tourism spot, offering guided tours of the Hobbiton set. With the crew from The Hobbit trilogy making improvements and additions to the aging Hobbiton set, the farm owners were happy to temporarily close down their tourism business, so filming could take place there again.
  • Goofs When the party is captured by the Goblins and Bilbo crawls away, a Goblin's CGI foot passes through the bridge he's walking on.

Galadriel : Mithrandir? Why the Halfling?

Gandalf : I don't know. Saruman believes that it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found. I've found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps it is because I am afraid, and he gives me courage.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey -- 8 Big Differences Between The Book And Movie

the hobbit unexpected journey book

Even though the movie is coming to theaters on Friday, it's still a little hard to believe that J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit will be made into three whole movies. Sure, the book is the prequel to the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it's also famously short and written for children. How does Peter Jackson plan to wring any kind of drama out of it?

WIth the first installment of the new trilogy, An Unexpected Journey , we're finally getting an idea of how it will work-- and though the story sticks closely to the big beats of the book you remember, there are are some additions and even, over the course of two and a half hours, some parts left out. Read below for the eight biggest differences between The Hobbit book and movie, and once you've seen it, jump into the comments to let us know what you think of the changes!

SPOILERS HEAD FOR THE HOBBIT BOOK AND MOVIE

the hobbit unexpected journey book

It starts with a massive flashback to Smaug's takeover of Erebor.

Before we see Bilbo, Gandalf or any of the main characters, the story begins by showing us the dragon's invasion of the dwarves' ancestral homeland-- setting up the stakes for their desire to take their home back, and giving us a peek at the dragon who doesn't appear in the rest of the movie. It's very similar to the start of Fellowship of the Ring , when Galadriel gave us a quick rundown of Middle Earth. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's wise to start a movie without its title character, though.

the hobbit unexpected journey book

Thorin Oakenshield really, really hates elves.

In that flashback to Erebor we see a band of elves-- led by Lee Pace's Thranduil-- watching on as Smaug takes over the dwarves' home, deciding not to intervene. That's enough for Thorin to hold a major grudge, which comes into play when Gandalf leads them all to Rivendell later on in the film. Dwarves and elves are never known for their friendship, but this slap in the face from the past gives Thorin good reason to be irritable.

the hobbit unexpected journey book

There are just two songs, both sung by dwarves.

For whatever reason Tolkien assumed that, because The Hobbit was aimed at younger readers, most of the characters ought to break out into song at some point. Two of those songs remain, both of them sung by the dwarves when they invade Bag End for a surprise dinner party-- and both probably earning eye rolls from audience members who haven't read the book. But the one sung by the elves welcoming the group to Rivendell, and both goblin songs, are gone.

the hobbit unexpected journey book

Radagast the Brown makes an appearance.

A skilled but humble wizard mentioned only briefly in the Lord of the Rings , Radagast appears in the flesh for the first time in An Unexpected Journey , warning Gandalf, Bilbo and the dwarves of some strange activities in his forest-- soon to become Mirkwood-- that hints at the return of the Necromancer, a.k.a. Sauron. None of the details are included in The Hobbit , though they were happening at the time according to Tolkien's own appendices to Return of the King . The details are included here, like many others, in the interest of setting up the larger story that will lead to Lord of the Rings .

the hobbit unexpected journey book

Gandalf meets with The White Council.

Because the action in The Hobbit is entirely limited to what happens to Bilbo, we don't see anything he doesn't-- including this meeting between Gandalf, Galadriel, Saruman and Elrond, which Tolkien describes in the appendices. The scene is a chance to bring back familiar faces from Lord of the Rings , of course, but it also gives a little extra weight to the story, once again helping lead into the heavy drama of Lord of the Rings . This all happens while Bilbo and the dwarves are hunkered down in Rivedell, which in the book happens over several weeks, but seems to be just a day or two here.

the hobbit unexpected journey book

Orcs and Wargs are on their tail the whole time.

In the extra back story we're given about the dwarves and Thorin in particular, we see how he got his name Oakenshield, facing down the Orc Azog the Defiler in an attempt to save Erebor, and cutting off his arm in the process. Turns out Azog didn't die after all, and is trailing the dwarves and Bilbo throughout their journey along with a band of fellow angry Orcs and their wolf-like Wargs. This gives the story a bit more stakes than the episodic, "And then we did this, and then we did this" structure of the book, and also allows the showdown at the end of the story-- with the dwarves in trees and throwing flaming pinecones-- to be a little more dramatic than when they were simply chased by irritated goblins.

the hobbit unexpected journey book

The Stone Giants are a much bigger presence.

You might think the Stone Giants, who interrupt the group right before they arrive on the goblin lair in the mountains, weren't in the book at all, since they take up about three sentences in the book, one of them in which Thorin worries they'll be "picked up by some giant and kicked sky-high for a football!" Jackson rightly gives the giants much more of a showcase here, since hey, if you're going to spend the money on those effects, you may as well use them.

the hobbit unexpected journey book

BIlbo is a much more active character.

Though the presence of the little hobbit who just wants to go home is an amusing counterpoint to the action in the book The Hobbit , Bilbo is the hero of these three movies, and therefore needed to be a little bit more involved in the action. The biggest change this results in comes when the group is captured by the group of mountain trolls. In the book, Gandalf tricks the trolls into not eating the dwarves until the sun rises, which turns the trolls to stone. In the movie, the trick is actually Bilbo's idea, and Gandalf steps in at the last minute with a well-timed stone crack that sends the sunlight streaming in. Bilbo also pitches in for the final confrontation with the Orcs, which definitely suggests he'll be more of a heroic figure in the movie to come.

All These Lord Of The Rings Movies Make Me Concerned About The Franchise's Future

  • The Lord of the Rings franchise is expanding rapidly, with new movies and shows on the horizon, sparking excitement but also a little concern.
  • While upcoming adaptations like Hunt for Gollum and War of the Rohirrim are anticipated to be successful, there's a fear of franchise fatigue.
  • Tolkien's legacy must be treated with care and adaptations should not be rushed for profit to avoid damaging the timeless appeal of Middle-earth.

The Lord of the Rings franchise is growing rapidly, but I am concerned about what this will mean for the future. For years, we only had Peter Jackson ' s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit as modern movies, but that has quickly begun to change. Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power streamed its first season in 2022, and it wasn't long after Warner Bros and New Line Cinema announced that they were working on a variety of other Middle-earth films. It seems to be a whole new age of Lord of the Rings movies , and as exciting as that is, I fear it could cause problems as well.

The ball will begin with The Rings of Power season 2 , which will begin streaming on Prime Video on August 29, 2024. From there, the animated movie The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will hit theaters on December 13, 2024, with a story following the legendary king of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand. Next will be the planned The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum , which is Andy Serkis and Peter Jackson's big return to the franchise. This isn't the end, and more Lord of the Rings adaptations have also been promised.

Every Upcoming Lord Of The Rings Movie & TV Show

The Lord of the Rings franchise has seen a resurgence in film and TV. Here is every project coming out of Middle-earth in the near future.

New Lord Of The Rings Movies Are Exciting, But There May Be Too Many At Once

The market may soon be oversaturated with lord of the rings adaptations.

Though I know Tolkien wasn't a fan of screen adaptations of his work, I have a deep appreciation for the role of movies and TV in the world of modern storytelling. A visual medium is a great way to ensure that a story stays relevant for generations, so I have always supported Midde-earth stories being brought to the screen (yes, even The Rings of Power ). For this reason, I am thrilled to see War of the Rohirrim , Hunt for Gollum , and whatever else New Line Cinema cooks up. However, as I sit in anticipation, there is a nagging sense of anxiety that it is too much at one time .

The upcoming Lord of the Rings movies are likely to be successful. Even Rings of Power , which has been at the center of heavy criticism, set records for Prime Video in the way of viewership. The animated format of War of the Rohirrim may mean somewhat lower box office numbers than its franchise predecessors, but it is still sure to find its audience. Then there's Serkis and Jackson's return with Hunt for Gollum —a shoo-in financial success. Given all the promise here, I can understand why these companies are taking advantage , but this reminds me too much of other franchises' big mistakes.

It seemed that audiences were simply getting tired of superheroes, and I'd hate for this to happen with Lord of the Rings.

My fear is that Lord of the Rings will duplicate the "superhero fatigue" phenomenon. Marvel became the reigning champ of the theatrical world, with the superhero craze peaking in about 2021. It seemed for a time that a superhero movie could do no wrong, and Marvel certainly took advantage of this. New MCU movies and TV shows were being rapidly produced, which unfortunately led to lower viewership and box office results . It seemed that audiences were simply getting tired of superheroes, and I'd hate for this to happen with Lord of the Rings .

Lord Of The Rings Fatigue Could Cause Significant Damage To Tolkien's Legacy

Tolkien's work deserves to be handled with slow & careful respect.

Lord of the Rings is one of the oldest fantasy franchises, and fans have been passionate about the stories of Middle-earth for decades. Stan Lee's superhero characters have been around for a long time, but Lord of the Rings has been around even longer. It's for this reason that my heart would be broken to see the public begin to lose interest in Middle-earth or, worse, to see Tolkien's work of art become nothing more than a means for monetary gain.

It's for this reason that my heart would be broken to see the public begin to lose interest in Middle-earth or, worse, to see Tolkien's work of art become nothing more than a means for monetary gain.

Tolkien was vehemently against his works being adapted to the screen . In one of his letters, he famously stated that " the failure of poor films is often precisely in exaggeration, and in the intrusion of unwarranted matter owing to not perceiving where the core of the original lies. " I have always found that a good movie adaptation can avoid this, and I have defended the effort to bring Tolkien's tales to the screen. However, if audiences get burned out on Lord of the Rings movies because there are too many of them, the author will have been proven right, and his legacy will suffer.

The moral themes of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings discourage rushed mass production for monetary gain, which makes the creation of too many film adaptations even more ironic.

There Must Be A Long Break After This Next Wave Of Lord Of The Rings Movies

I'm excited for the upcoming lord of the rings movies, but new line needs to slow down.

I don't believe that Rings of Power , War of the Rohirrim , and Hunt For Gollum will be enough to cause irreversible damage to the Lord of the Rings franchise. However, the idea that there are more on the way gives me pause. I feel that New Line Cinema must proceed with extreme caution. After one more installment, it may be best to give audiences time to digest these new screen adaptations before diving in to make more . More importantly, more Lord of the Rings movies should only be made if they aim to bring the heart of Tolkien's work to the screen. Monetary gain is almost always a slippery slope toward a disgraced movie franchise.
