  • Beautiful aesthetic.
  • Separate shoe compartment—perfect for keeping those mud-caked hiking boots away from your clean gear.
  • In addition to being a theft deterrent, the padded top pocket makes getting through airport security a breeze.
  • Compression straps give the bag a low profile when you’re walking around.
  • When carrying a heavy load, the shoulder straps aren’t perfectly cushioned and can be a little uncomfortable.
  • Velcro patches are small, requiring precise moves when closing flaps & straps—not ideal.
  • Water can get inside the bag during rain - not all zippers are water resistant.

Aer has released an updated version of this pack, view our Aer Travel Pack 2 Review.

Let’s start with the obvious on the Aer Travel Pack—this bag is beautiful.

As far as travel packs go, this is one of the slickest we’ve seen, with clean lines, a well-rounded design aesthetic, and a low profile. That low profile is due in large part to the compression straps that not only keep the bag closer to your back, but also make the bag feel lighter when you’re lugging a full load.

Packing The Aer Travel Pack

Although strength and beauty don’t always go hand-in-hand, this bag is a perfect balance between the two thanks to 1680D Ballistic Nylon construction. We’ve abused this bag quite a bit, and it still maintains a nice strong feel which leads us to believe it won’t leave you with an untimely rip, tear, or break.

At 13″ x 21″ x 8.5″ it’s not the biggest travel pack we’ve tested. But that doesn’t mean it’s small either, coming in a respectable 33 liters. And while volume won’t pose a problem if you’re trying to use the Aer Travel Pack as a carry-on, be aware of the empty weight (approximately 3.9 lbs) when flying on airlines with strictly enforced weight thresholds. (Quick Pack Hack/Pro Travel Tip: check out carryonbagsizes.com to see what the carry-on restrictions are for your airline.)

Aer Travel Pack Water Resistant Zippers

While the Aer Travel Pack isn’t advertised as waterproof, we feel pretty good about rating it as water-resistant/splash-resistant thanks to the use of water resistant zippers on the exterior.

Aer Travel Pack In The Rain

Now, you don’t want to go cliff jumping with this bad boy strapped to your back, but you should be OK during a 10–15 minutes bout of inclement weather…beyond that we have our doubts.

Water Drops on Aer Travel Pack

As nice as they are, the water resistant zippers aren’t used on the entire backpack. And when we tested the Aer Travel Pack in heavy rain, water definitely got inside. If you end up purchasing this bag, make sure you put your laptop in a sleeve to keep it dry (we recommend sleeves by Incase if you want something with a similar aesthetic to the bag).

Let’s take a closer look at what the Aer Travel Pack offers, and what makes this bag unique.

Shoe Compartment

Aer Travel Pack Shoe Compartment

This is probably the one thing we love most about the bag—the standalone shoe compartment.

For the adventurous traveler who isn’t afraid to get a little grit and grime on their shoes, the separate compartment makes keeping dirty footwear separate from all those carefully folded clean clothes a breeze. Plus, it folds out of the pack, making it easy to clean away any soil, sand, or dust that collects in the compartment.

Aer Travel Pack Shoe Compartment Ventilation Holes

It is worth noting, Aer placed two ventilation holes at the bottom of the shoe compartment. It’s great for airing out those dirty, sweaty shoes. But not so great when you need to set your bag down in the rain. Note: whatever is in that compartment will likely get wet if you set it in a puddle, or something.

Aer Travel Pack Shoe Pocket Folded Out

Oh – and the pocket folds out easily for cleaning – because you know there’s gonna be some grime in there when you’re through with it.

Padded Top-Pocket

Aer Travel Pack Padded Top Pocket

When it comes to air travel, few things are as miserable as dealing with security. Anything that simplifies and expedites the process of getting through long lines, metal detectors, and x-ray machines is going to get a BIG thumbs-up from us, hence our love for the Aer Travel Pack’s padded top pocket.

Perfect for quick grabs and quick unloads, this is a tough, zippered pocket for loose change, tickets, passports, wallets, sunglasses, and anything else you might want to keep handy.

Plus, the location of the top-pouch makes it virtually impossible for pickpockets and other evil-doers to jack your belongings when walking through crowded marketplaces or busy streets.

Main Clamshell

Aer Travel Pack Clamshell

The main storage compartment of the Aer Travel Pack is a clamshell opening—usually our preference over a toploader as it makes organizing packing SO much easier.

Plenty of Pockets

If organization is your obsession, this bag is definitely going to be your jam, with lots of little internal and external pockets for accessories like pens, paper, multi-tools, toiletries, memory cards, and more.

Aer Travel Pack Front Pocket

While the pockets aren’t perfect (the padding inside some the internal compartments feels unnecessary, and the velcro pocket needs to perfectly align with the small velcro patch to close securely) they are ultimately nice to have. Our favorite pocket on the bag has to be the half pocket on the front of the bag which we found immensely helpful in terms of being a quick place to stuff a charger or a toothbrush.

Aer Travel Pack Front Pocket

The lining has a swishy, windbreaker like feel which doesn’t really add any performance value to the bag, but it certainly is helpful for making cool sound effects.

Aer Travel Pack Laptop Compartment

And—before anyone asks—yes, there is a fully padded and suspended laptop compartment, so your hardware stays safe when throwing your bag in frustration after the PA system announces another delay to your flight. (Don’t throw the pack though. Just don’t).

Straps and Pads

As far as travel packs go, straps and pads are pretty important. And for the most part, the Aer Travel Pack gets it right in this department. Not only are the back pads really comfortable (seriously, you could almost use them as a pillow), they also leave room for airflow when the pack is being worn, giving your skin some much-needed breathability.

Aer Travel Pack Padded Side Handle

And the side handle and top loop proved to be handy when you just need to grab the bag and move it a short distance.

Aer Travel Pack Top Strap Adjustment

Having said all those nice things, there is a knock—the shoulder straps can be a little thin & uncomfortable if the bag is fully loaded, and might not be suited for hours-on-end wear – but – the multi-adjustable straps can mitigate some of that, allowing you to distribute the weight pretty well on your back.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

Pulled it out of the small box it came in and everything is looking & feeling great. Impressed with the design of the pack and considered pocket layouts.

Bag itself is still going strong. Good durability and hasn’t shown hardly any wear and tear with daily use.

Testing the Aer Travel Pack in Russia

Still going strong and we even ran this through the ringer with a trip to the 2018 World Cup. Still a great bag.

What people love about uluru / ayers rock tours.

Took the tour hosted by Robert & Frederico. Robert was always full of energy when he spoke and he had lots of stories. Whenever we saw animals on the outback roads he stopped and allowed us to have a look and photograph them. He did this with camels. He found a dead snake on the side of the road and then pulled it into our van for us all to have a look at it. He found a thorny devil on the side of the road and pulled it into the van for all of us to look at it. He was very knowledgeable with explaining the story of the Southern Cross star constellation. I liked that the tour guides allowed us to swap seats in the van and sit up the front with Robert. I liked the number of stops we had including Erldunda at the geographic centre of Australia and the many photo opportunities on the side of the road. It was fabulous to see Uluru and I was amazed at the height and size of it. We saw the sunset over Uluru which changed the colour of the rock which was sensational. We also saw the sunrise over Uluru and I enjoyed visiting the Aboriginal cultural centre. Aboriginal art is stunning and the people are friendly.
This tour brought together a n eclectic group of travellers for a lovely 3 day outback experience. The sights, and hikes were wonderful. The accommodations in tents were good. The meals were appropriate for the convenience and weather conditions.
The tour is amazing! Great tour guide tells us a lot of history, legends and landscape, interesting itinerary, friendly and nice team members, unforgettable experience. The team members spent wonderful time together that made us connected together. The scene and sight seeing are definitely worth to visit. Once in a lifetime experience.

Autopia Tours

"This tour was definitely a highlight of my time in Australia! I had Donk and Sue as my guides, both who were phenomenal. Sue made the tour for me, providing endless facts on the geological history of the places we visited, outback fauna and flora, as well as the Aboriginal significance of sacred sights. We had a small group of just 10 people, which I really enjoyed—everyone was enthusiastic and willing to help out with preparing meals. We did a lot in just three days, although there was a lot more driving than I expected. But Donk did stop at some view points and when we saw animals in the bus to break it up.

"This was an incredible experience! Amazing views, beautiful sunrise hikes, (bush) camping in swags and learning so much about geological and cultural history. My tour group was very small which created a very relaxed dynamic. No one was left behind or left out. Teamwork makes the dream work. Sid, our tour guide, is pretty damn awesome in what he does. I learned so much about these parts of Australia and he really kept me engaged because he showed authenticity and genuine engagement with people and his surroundings. He was very professional and cool even when things went a little south (blown out tire with a very long drive ahead). He had to stray away from the itinerary a couple of times but I fully trusted him to give us the best experience on this tour. He noticed when you took an interest in learning specific things and would try and teach you about what he knows. Also shoutout to Gary, who was a trainee tour guide. He'll do great on his first tour through the desert and that group will be lucky to have him. This part of Australia is so unique compared to the east coast and south. It's definitely in my top 2 of tours I've been on.

Ayers Rock Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Ayers Rock, or Uluru as it’s known to the traditional Anangu owners, is a massive sandstone monolith in the heart of Australia’s Red Centre—the physical and spiritual center of the country. Ayers Rock and the nearby Kata Tjuta rock formations have been significant in traditional ceremonies and rites of passage for over 10,000 years.

Aboriginal guides having a campfire at Uluru

Today, Ayers Rock is one of Australia’s top natural wonders , drawing many visitors annually. Sunrise and sunset tours allow you to watch in awe as Ayers Rock changes colors in the shifting light, from burnt orange to fiery red to deep purple. Combined with the remote and rugged outback landscape, it makes for a truly iconic Australian experience.

Our Australia travel specialists have visited the Red Centre several times, so we’ve compiled this Ayers Rock travel guide with everything you need to know before you go!

How do I get to Ayers Rock?

Ayers Rock is located in the Red Centre of Australia, far from major cities. The easiest way to get here is to fly to Ayers Rock Airport; most hotels provide airport transfers. Its remote surroundings will make you feel like you’re riding into a scene out of Star Wars !

We do not recommend self-driving to Ayers Rock as a tourist, as it is so remote, and the landscape is quite harsh; you certainly don’t want to blow out a tire in the middle of the scorching hot outback! If you wish to visit some other outback destinations as well, like Alice Springs or Kings Canyon, you can enjoy multi-day tours with comfortable transportation in an air-conditioned coach bus.

When is the best time to go to Ayers Rock?

The best time to visit Ayers Rock is May through September. This is Australia’s winter, so the temperatures are more bearable at this time of year.

Ayers Rock is located in the desert, so the climate is characterized by extremes: hot days and cold nights. It can be especially hot in the summer (December through February), and guests may be bothered by flies and pests. You can still travel during this time, but be cautious about higher temperatures during the middle of the day.

Raising a glass to Ayers Rock at sunset

What can you do at Ayers Rock?

We suggest spending 2-3 nights in the Red Centre, as there’s plenty to do! Here are some of our favorite activities at Ayers Rock:

  • Take a camel ride through the outback and witness Ayers Rock changing colors at sunrise or sunset
  • Enjoy an Aboriginal-guided tour of Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta to learn about the area’s cultural and spiritual significance.
  • Witness the majestic landscape from above in a helicopter
  • Ride through the rugged outback on a motorcycle
  • Enjoy a gourmet dining experience under the stars (our favorite is the Tali Wiru dinner )
  • Visit the incredible Field of Light art installation at the base of Ayers Rock.
  • Learn about Aboriginal heritage with a traditional dot painting workshop

For many years, the local Anangu people have requested that visitors not climb Ayers Rock, although it was still technically allowed. As of October 2019, climbing Ayers Rock will be officially prohibited. This trek up Ayers Rock holds great spiritual significance in the local culture.

Sunrise camel tour in the Red Centre

Where should I stay when visiting Ayers Rock?

Due to the remote location, there is no real town to stay in. Still, some fabulous resorts contain everything you need, including restaurants, spas, boutique shops, art galleries, supermarkets, and plenty of activities. Our favorite hotels and resorts at Ayers Rock are:

  • Desert Gardens Hotel:  This lovely Ayers Rock Resort compound hotel offers poolside rooms and rooms with views of Uluru.
  • Sails in the Desert Hotel:  Sails in the Desert is the premium hotel at Ayers Rock Resort, offering an elevated experience compared to Desert Gardens.
  • Longitude 131° :  For a VIP Ayers Rock experience, stay at Longitude 131°. This intimate, eco-luxe camp features dramatic views and the utmost privacy. Think of it as 5-star glamping!

Frequently asked questions

  • It’s simple — first, pack your passport, official ID, cash and vital medications. Next, you’ll want some in-flight entertainment to while away the time. A juicy novel and a tablet filled with your favorite shows are some great options. If you plan to catch forty winks, a quality neck pillow and a pair of noise-canceling headphones will also be useful. Finally, leave some space for a toothbrush and some deodorant to ensure you arrive looking and feeling fresh.
  • Put all your full-sized bottles of hair gel and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated. Sharp or pointed objects, like your treasured pocket knife, and dangerous goods which are flammable or explosive, such as flares, bleaching agents and matches, are also prohibited.
  • Comfort should always be your highest priority when selecting what to wear during your flight. Consider your footwear carefully too, as swollen feet can be a side effect of flying. Flat shoes which are slightly roomy are always a sensible way to go.
  • A condition by the name of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) can pose a risk on long-haul flights. It results from blood clots forming due to inactivity and poor circulation. Doing regular leg and foot exercises in your seat is a great way to prevent this from occurring. Wearing a pair of compression socks is also a wise idea.
  • Your travel ID and boarding pass will need to be inspected by airport security personnel. Have them close by so you don’t have to dig around for them.
  • The X-ray machine is up next. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to set off the scanner’s alarm. This includes items like earphones or headphones, as well as heavy jackets or coats. They’ll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
  • All your electronic devices, including your phone and laptop, must also be scanned.
  • Can’t travel without your favorite cologne or perfume? Not a problem. As long as the volume is no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it’s stored in a clear zip-lock bag, you can bring it with you in your carry-on luggage.
  • There’s a chance you’ll be required to remove your shoes to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a good idea.
  • Airlines won’t allow any sharp items or pocket knives in the cabin. If you need to bring these kinds of items, put them in your checked luggage.

Ayers Rock, or Uluru is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world. The striking rock, that almost glows orange draws thousands of visitors every year.

While you can no longer climb the rock you can stay in nearby Alice Springs and visit by land or even helicopter over for an aerial  view.

In this complete guide to visiting Ayers Rock we share some history, top ten things to do in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, where to stay, where to eat and other general tips and advice.

In 1993, in addition to its English name of Ayers Rock, ‘Uluru’ was also recognised by its traditional Aboriginal name. Out of respect, people now commonly refer to this 1,142 ft (348 m) high sandstone formation as Uluru. Uluru is located within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in central Australia. Alice Springs is the closest town and is about 208 miles (335 km) south west of Uluru.

As the oldest living culture in the world, the Australia Aborigines have a diverse and rich culture. There were over  250 Aboriginal nations across Australia each with several clans before European invasion in 1788. The local Aboriginal nation to Uluru is known as the Anangu people.

Climbing of Uluru was banned from 26 October 2019 out of respect for the Anangu people, but there are still so many amazing things to do to experience Uluru. During your visit, take some time to learn about this ancient culture and landscapes.

Top Ten things to do in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park offers a number of once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Plan your trip wisely and make sure you allow time to cover off these top ten ultimate experiences.

1) Uluru base walk

The Uluru base walk is a great way to acquaint yourself with this sacred space. The base walk is roughly 6.8 miles around ( 10 km) and will take about three hours. The best place to start is from the Mala carpark.

You can start with the guided ranger walk which starts from here every day where you can hear about sacred men’s and women’s sites around the rock.

2) Sounds of Silence

Sounds of Silence is one the highlights to the Uluru experience. Admiring sunset from the sand dunes, you’ll watch the color of Uluru change as the sun drops in the sky. As the sun sets, you listen to the sounds of the didgeridoo being played while you sip champagne and eating canapes.

On to the main attraction, you’ll enjoy a fine dining experience of local bush ingredients under the stars while listening to bush poetry and astronomer decode the southern night sky. Sounds of Silence is a night you’ll never forget.

3) Field of Light

Until 2027 you can see the  Field of Light installation . The outdoor light exhibit is made up of 50,000 glass spheres, changing color in the darkness of the Australian outback. You can spend about an hour walking through the exhibition which is about the size of seven football fields.

Choose from a variety of Field of Light options. The Field of Light Star Pass is highly recommended and includes champagne and canapes on sunset prior to the night exhibition.

4) Sunrise and Sunset viewings

There are a number of viewing platforms throughout the national park giving you the best spots for sunrise and sunset photos. Don’t miss a sunrise or sunset during your visit!

Sunrise and Sunset Tours:

Uluru: Guided Walking Tour at Sunrise with Light Breakfast Uluru: Sunrise Camel Safari and Freshly Baked Bread Damper Uluru: Sunset, Sparkling Wine, Cheeseboard & Gourmet BBQ Uluru 1.5-Hour Sunset Tour with Sparkling Wine & Cheeseboard

5) Camel ride

Believe it or not there are roughly 200,000 camels in central Australia. They were imported from British India and Afghanistan in in the mid 1890s for transportation and construction during colonization of central and western Australia. For a unique central Australian experience, take a camel ride tour at sunrise or sunset .

6) Helicopter

Taking a helicopter to see some of Australia’s most iconic landmarks from the air is an incredible experience.  Helicopter rides over Uluru and Kata-Tjuta leave throughout the day but sunrise and sunset are the most popular timeslots.

The hiking around the Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park is completely underrated. There are hikes ranging from easy 20 minute hikes to the more difficult hikes taking about three hours. They are not only in some of the most beautiful natural landscapes within Australia but you’ll learn more about the sacred sites and histories of the Anangu people along the way.

The  Walpa Gorge walk,   Mutitjulu waterhole , the  Mala walk  and the first two stages of the challenging Valley of the Winds walks come highly recommended. Be sure to take plenty of water, walk early in the morning and leave by 11am to avoid the hottest time of the day.

8) Cultural Centre

Visiting the local  Cultural Centre during your stay is an absolute must. It’s a great way to learn a bit more about the local Anangu people including their culture, history and way of life. At the  art gallery and gift shop you can purchase Aboriginal art, wood carvings, tools, weapons and accessories.

On Saturdays you can see the local Anangu artists painting and meet them before purchasing their art.

Cultural Tours:  Uluru: Aboriginal Art & Culture Experience

9) Cultural experiences

The Ayers Rock Resort offers complimentary cultural experiences for guests. There are  guided garden walks around the grounds where you can learn about the indigenous plants used in traditional medicine,  bush food tasting experiences to sample traditional food, bush yarns   to hear about Aboriginal culture and traditions.

Daily didgeridoo workshops allow men to try and play the didgeridoos, by Aboriginal lore only men are allowed to play.

10)  Kings Canyon

If you’re looking for more to explore during your Uluru visit, consider a day tour to  Kings Canyon . Kings Canyon is about 71,000 hectares or 274 square miles.

About three hours from Uluru, within the Watarrka National Park you can walk the rim of Kings Canyon which is about six kilometres or 3.7 miles.

How to get to and around Uluru

International arrivals.

For International travellers, Uluru is one of the most remote places in Australia to reach. International flights arrive into Australian capital cities and travellers can reach Uluru by reconnecting via the Ayers Rock Airport (Yulara, Northern Territory).

Domestic arrivals

Jetstar has flight options to Ayers Rock Airport from various capital cities around Australia. Qantas also flies direct into Alice Springs from most capital cities around Australia, which is a four hour drive south to Uluru.

Driving to Uluru

Uluru is a 30-hour drive in one direction from Sydney, 24 hours from Melbourne, 25 hours from Perth and 20 hours from Darwin. Travelling by car or van is only recommended for extended trips within Australia for a minimum of six months.

Getting around the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

The easiest and most economical way of getting around the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is to rent a car. This will give you the flexibility to access hiking trials and leave for sunrise and sunset on your schedule.

If driving in Australia and on the left side of the road isn’t your thing, there are a number of tour operators who can help with your transportation like  Uluru Hop on Hop off or AAT Kings .

Where to stay with specific hotel recommendations

There are limited hotel options within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park but don’t let that make you think you are limited for choice and quality.

For a luxury experience  Longitude 131 offers accommodation on a multimillion dollar lodge with a stunning views over the national park and a strong connection to culture and natural environment.

The majority of accommodation is within the  Ayers Rock Resort which has a range of options at various price points.  Sails in the Desert   is a favorite with the resort offering the only pool on site, which is a necessity during the dry summers! Emu Walk Apartments provides options for group travellers looking to cook their own meals and the Ayers Rock Campground has options for budget travellers.

Where to eat

There are a range of places to eat in Uluru from fine dining under the stars to casual dining by the pool. If part of your reason for visiting Uluru is to experience the culture, you’d be cheating if you didn’t try as many traditional Aboriginal foods as possible. There are also plenty of other options for those less adventurous!

  • Sounds of Silence is an incredible culinary experience which begins with canapes and champagne overlooking Uluru at sunset and finishes with a fine dining, bush tucker inspired menu incorporating bush ingredients under the stars. The experience also includes a bush poet, didgeridoo player and astronomer.
  • Tali Wiru is a four course dinner and world class gastronomic experience with views of both Uluru and Kata Tjuta under the night sky. It includes private settings for two and a menu featuring ancient and indigenous ingredients.
  • Pira Pool Bar  After a morning of hiking, there’s no where better to enjoy a drink or light lunch than the Pira Pool Bar.
  • Ilkari Restaurant Ilkari Restaurant provides an international experience to the Ayers Rock Resort. It offers a buffet breakfast and dinner as well as an international menu. You can expect a pancake cooking station, pastries, Asian soups through to seafood, roasts and a chocolate fountain! Located conveniently in the middle of the Ayers Rock Resort the IGA supermarket is a lifesaver for snacks and drinks.

Evening hangouts and bars

There isn’t much in the way of night scene within the Uluru National Park, but if you are looking for a party scene it probably isn’t the best vacation destination to you. Between the early wake up calls to see sunrises, hiking and evening activities such as Sounds of Silence or Field of Lights you won’t be looking for evening hang outs and bars.

General tips and advice for Uluru

Access passes.

To visit the Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park you will need to obtain a  National Parks pass ). A three-day pass will cost $38 and allow you access to both Uluru and Kata Tjuta. The cost of the pass helps to maintain the park’s facilities and preserve its World Heritage sites, support traditional owners and the community.

What to pack

When packing your clothes, you’ll need everything from hiking gear to something fancy to wear for your dining experiences under the stars.

Central Australia has extreme temperatures. Between October to March, the weather can get extremely hot with temperatures exceeding over 35 C or 95 F. To keep yourself hydrated and sun-safe be sure to drink at least two litres (or 67 fluid ounces), wear sun protected clothing, a wide brimmed hat and sunscreen.

Flies are also very common in Central Australia. It’s not pretty, but a fly net will keep the flies off your face (and out of your nose!). Make sure you bring one with you, there are limited supplies in Uluru – you won’t regret it!

7 Best Things to Do at Ayers Rock, Australia

Ayers Rock – or Uluru, as it’s known to the Aboriginal owners of the land – is one of  Australia’s most iconic landmarks. Found in the middle of the red sandy outback in the Northern Territory, Uluru / Ayers Rock is sacred to the Aboriginal people. It is said that the Red Centre , the area around Alice Springs where you'll encounter Uluru, is the spiritual epicenter of Australia.

In 1993, a policy was adopted that allowed official names that consist of both the traditional Aboriginal name and the English name. So in 1993, the rock was renamed Ayers Rock / Uluru and the order of the dual names was officially reversed to Uluru / Ayers Rock in 2002.

Uluru / Ayer’s Rock is more than just a big boulder and it should be on your Australia travel must-see list. There are many things to do while you are there from hiking around the rock to learning about Aboriginal culture.

There are unique places to stay in this special place that seem to blend into the dunes and rock formations. At  Ayers Rock Resort , you’ll experience the sacred rock and all its wonder through some of their resort-based experiences and tours.

Sails in the Desert  has an emphasis on Indigenous culture. Yet, the hotel has resort amenities with an expansive gumtree lined swimming pool and modern  dining, bar and lounge  options where you can enjoy cocktails, music, and Indigenous-inspired cuisine. Sails in the Desert's Mulgara Gallery  features Indigenous art and culture. And after a day of hiking in the red rock desert, you can enjoy one of the  Red Ochre Spa's  treatments.

The most unique hotel in the resort area is Longitude 131° with 15 glamping tents complete with king-sized beds that face Uluru / Ayer’s Rock for an amazing view of the sunrise over the sacred red rock.

Admire the Rock's Sheer Size

When you see Uluru / Ayer’s Rock in pictures, it’s hard to imagine the sheer size of this natural phenomenon. As one of the largest monoliths in the world, Uluru / Ayer’s Rock towers over you at over 300 meters (or around 1,000 feet) high and 2 kilometers, (or over 1.2 miles), wide.

This sandstone rock dates back about 500 million years, to around the same time the Australian continent was formed. The name Ayers Rock was chosen by Ernest Giles, an Anglo-Australian explorer who named it after the South Australian Premier at the time, Sir Henry Ayers. However, Uluru is the traditional and cultural domain of the Anangu people who certainly pre-dated the arrival of Giles.

Walk, Hike, or Ride Around the Rock

Uluru / Ayer’s Rock is even more impressive up close; its seemingly smooth surface is covered in divets, scars, and caves. While it’s considered incredibly disrespectful to the Anangu people to climb Uluru / Ayer’s Rock — and climbing the landmark is now prohibited — it’s highly recommended that you take the time to explore around it. Walking around the rock is a 9-kilometer, or close to 6-mile, round-trip so remember to wear good walking shoes and pack a bottle of water.

Take a Camel Tour

John White Photos / Getty Images

The outback has plenty of secrets hiding in its endless red sand, from some of the most diverse wildlife in the world to hidden rock formations and oases. The best way to explore the outback is from the back of a camel, as they are perfectly suited to the hot, dry conditions.  Uluru Camel Tours  offer daily tours including sunrise tours, day trips, and sunset rides around Uluru / Ayer’s Rock and the Olgas, a group of large, domed rock formations.

Experience Aboriginal Culture

The Anangu people are the original inhabitants of Alice Springs, and as a result, they have endless knowledge of the area. Whether you’re interested in bush tucker (native food), traditional Aboriginal artwork, or simply understanding the spiritual and historical connection that the Anangu people have to Uluru / Ayer’s Rock, there’s a tour that can give you an even deeper appreciation of this incredible part of Australian culture.

Whether you’re staying at the  Ayers Rock Resort  or any number of other accommodation options, you’ll likely have access to some free Aboriginal displays, such as dancing, boomerang throwing, traditional dot painting, or bush tucker tours. You may find yourself joining in and learning to do things like throwing a boomerang.

Go Stargazing

simonbradfield / Getty Images

Being situated in the middle of the desert has its advantages—namely the lack of artificial light pollution, giving you an unbelievable view of the stars. You can choose to do your own stargazing or, if you prefer having someone else point out the formations, the  Ayers Rock Resort offers a stargazing tour .

Dine Al Fresco

The Sounds of Silence, run by the  Ayers Rock Resort , offers an unforgettable fine dining experience at the Red Centre. Watch the sunset over Uluru / Ayer’s Rock while enjoying gourmet canapés and sparkling wine, then dine under the breath-taking night sky as you enjoy a bush tucker-themed buffet, complete with crocodile, kangaroo, and barramundi. As the sky darkens you'll listen to their resident star talker decode the southern night sky and a didgeridoo performance.

Take to the Skies

Seeing Uluru / Ayer’s Rock from the air is a sure way to fully understand just how mind-blowingly big it is, and the best way to appreciate the vastness of the Aussie outback.  Professional Helicopter Services  offer scenic flights over Uluru / Ayer’s Rock, the Olgas, and other incredible landmarks. Their helicopters are specially designed to ensure you get the best possible view, so you’re guaranteed to take home some life-long memories.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was July. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

Search cheap flights with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest airline tickets for all the top airlines around the world, airports around the world and the top international flight routes . KAYAK searches hundreds of travel sites to help you find cheap airfare and book a flight that suits you best. Since KAYAK searches many plane tickets sites at once, you can find cheap tickets from cheap airlines and for trains and buses quickly.

KAYAK also helps you find the right hotels for your needs.

Uluru Ayers Rock : The Complete Travel Guide

Every time we go to Uluru, we’re immediately awestruck by its presence.

It’s beautiful. It’s stark. It’s dramatic.

Each minute it changes as the sun sweeps across the sky, casting shadows that wax and wane.

Travel to Uluru Ayers ROck

No glossy brochure can replace what you see and feel when you look at Uluru.

You know at once why it’s sacred to Aboriginal people and why people from all over the world come to see it.

Yet despite all this, Ayers Rock has a reputation for being expensive and for some, disappointing.

Yes, it is expensive.

After all, it’s in the middle of Australia! However, we’d like to make sure that you don’t go home disappointed.

Below, you’ll find links to EVERYTHING you need to know before you go, along with information to help you avoid being underwhelmed or paying too much money if you visit Ayers Rock .

Cheaper Than Bali

Use our insider’s tips to plan your trip to Uluru -we’ve even worked out exact fuel costs for driving Sydney to Ayers Rock just to prove that Uluru is cheaper than most people think.

The fact is that you can see Uluru cheaply -especially if you’re an Aussie.

In fact, if you’re an Aussie and you haven’t been to Uluru because you’ve heard ‘ it’s just a big red rock in the middle of nowhere ‘ or ‘ it’s cheaper to go to Bali ‘ we want you to take yourself aside and SLAP YOURSELF!

Uluru-Kata TJuta National Park

The secret to getting to Uluru cheaply if you’re an Australian??

–>DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE<–

You can drive to Uluru from Sydney in 3 days in an ordinary 2WD car.

Yes, that’s right.

Your Mum’s Barina will get you there.

It will cost you between $300-$400 in fuel, each way.

In other words, for less than the price of ONE return ticket to Bali, you could drive your entire family to Uluru.

If you’re prepared to stay in a mixture of budget accommodation and camping, you’ll be able to reduce your average daily accommodation costs to less than $100 for a family of four.

Add $300 per week for a mixture of self-catering and meals and you’ve saved over $3000 on the price that you’d pay to take your family to Bali – and that’s worked out on two fabulous weeks in the outback vs just one week in Bali.

Do NOT tell us it’s cheaper to go to Bali if there’s more than one of you travelling.

Don’t be lazy. Do the maths.
