Tour the Apollo Theater in Harlem

apollo tour

If there's one place that Harlem is known for, it's the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem.

Seeing a show here, especially attending Amateur Night at the Apollo, is something we think everyone visiting New York City should consider - it's a unique and memorable thing to do.

Some of our local guides have gone more than once -- it's just that much fun! (Read about getting tickets below ).

We also know how great this experience is from members of our popular NYC Travel Tips Facebook group with over 200k members.

apollo tour

We stop by the Apollo on our pay-what-you-wish guided tour of Harlem but we don't go inside.

If you want to see the inside and hear about the music and entertainment showcased here for nearly a century, you can take a tour with the resident historian!

Below we go over the tour information, and we share tips on planning your visit and getting tickets for performances.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE APOLLO THEATER

The gorgeous neo-classical theater opened in 194 as the Hertig and Seamon's New Burlesque Theatre.

Like most theaters in the U.S. at that time, this theater was open only to white patrons and the owners offered opportunities only to white performers.

Nearly 20 years later, in 1934, New York's mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia, banned burlesque performances and the theater shut down.

The theater reopened as the Apollo Theater and began its new life in 1934 with new owners.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Harlem was a hotbed of culture, from music, arts, literature, poetry and activism. This era came to be known as the 'Harlem Renaissance".

The Apollo catered to New York City's African-American population, many of whom were beginning to move to Harlem in large numbers.

Given the make-up of the neighborhood and new patrons, the owners prioritized offering spots to African-American talent, though they booked white entertainment as well.

Within the next few years, future legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday would be introduced to Harlem audiences on the theater’s weekly Amateur Night.

As they say, the rest is history!

If you have time in your schedule and are here on a Wednesday, we highly recommend you go to Amateur Night (see below).

Many of our guides have been to see shows at the Apollo at least once. Take it from us, is one of the most memorable experiences you can have in New York City!

APOLLO THEATER TOURS

Apollo offers a 60-75 minute tour led by the resident historian of the Apollo Theater, Billy “Mr. Apollo” Mitchell.

It is offered to groups of 20 people or more, but if you are traveling alone or are with a group of fewer than 20, you can join an existing tour if one is scheduled for the date you want to visit.

The tour is not free but is well worth the cost for those who love music, culture, and African-American history.

New York Walking Tours

Mr. Mitchell has been working for the Apollo Theatre since 1965 when he was hired as a teenager to be a backstage gofer for visiting celebrities.

He has witnessed much of the Apollo's history and is full of stories about the legendary performers who have graced this venue.

His passion for the theatre is infectious. He loves his job so much, it is the only place he has ever worked!

SEE A SHOW AT THE APOLLO

If you want to see a show at the Apollo Theater, look at the calendar of concerts here .

You can buy tickets online. Sometimes you may get a promo on Groupon .

If you don't see a performer that interests you, we recommend going to Amateur Night at the Apollo .

Before there was American Idol , before there was The Voice , before there was The X Factor ...there was Amateur Night at the Apollo.

Attending this talent competition is one of the most fun -- and unique! -- ways to spend a Wednesday night in New York City.

There is just no experience like it!

You'll see some really great performers and some not-so-good ones.

But that's ok because you get to boo them off the stage. You are encouraged to boo!

If the audience boos loud enough, the ''Executioner" escorts that performer off stage in not such a polite way.

Great talent gets loud cheers and applause. Some may get a one-way ticket to stardom.

Special Shows:

If you are in town in December, the Apollo hosts an Amateur Night at the Apollo - Holiday Edition .

In December, you can also see a special holiday show, Kwanzaa Celebration: Regeneration Nigh t.

Read about them from our post, Best Christmas Shows in NYC .

Good to know when you attend a show:

  • No outside food or beverage. Accommodations are made for patrons with medical needs.
  • All persons and bags are subject to search.
  • Bags must fit comfortably under your seat. Oversized bags are prohibited.
  • Masks are optional but encouraged for all attendees while inside the theater.
  • The Apollo has a seating capacity of 1,500.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

The Apollo tour is just over an hour. If you are already in Harlem, you may as well get to know the neighborhood!

We also have a GPS-enabled audio tour version you can use to explore on your own.

50 years ago: apollo 11 astronauts return from around the world goodwill tour, johnson space center.

What do you do for an encore when you’ve just completed the first human Moon landing mission? You go on a 38-day around the world goodwill tour, visiting 29 cities in 24 countries, at the request of the President of the United States, who lends you one of his jets for the journey. Other returning space crews had undertaken goodwill tours after their missions, but fitting with the historical significance of their mission the Apollo 11 astronauts, accompanied by their wives and an entourage of NASA and State Department officials, embarked on the Giantstep goodwill world tour at the personal request of President Richard M. Nixon. For President Nixon, the tour represented the interest of the United States in maintaining space exploration as a peaceful project to benefit all nations. For Apollo 11 astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin, the tour provided an opportunity to demonstrate goodwill to all people around the world and to stress that the Moon landing was done for the benefit of all humanity. After their return, they commented that everywhere they went, people acknowledged that the Moon landing was done for humanity, not just for Americans.

giantstep_world_tour_map

On the morning of Sept. 29, 1969, a blue-and-white Boeing VC-137B touched down at Ellington Air Force Base (AFB) near the Manned Spacecraft Center, now the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Neil and Janet Armstrong, Michael and Patricia Collins, and Buzz and Joan Aldrin waved good-bye to well-wishers who had gathered to see them off and stepped aboard the presidential plane. For the next seven weeks, they traveled to six continents, crossed the Equator six times, met with Presidents, Prime Ministers, Kings and Queens, and ambassadors, received numerous medals, accolades, and gifts, rode in countless motorcades, and gave 22 press conferences. It is estimated that more than 100 million people saw them in the various motorcades and other venues and they shook hands with an estimated 25 thousand people. Geneva B. Barnes , a secretary from NASA Headquarters who participated in the goodwill tour, provided many interesting insights in an oral history interview with the JSC History Office.

Prior to landing on Nov. 5 at Andrews AFB outside Washington, DC, the State Department personnel prepared for the astronauts a memo about local customs and protocol, as they did prior to all the stops in foreign countries, this one clearly tongue-in-cheek:

Your next stop is Washington, DC, USA. Here are a few helpful reminders.

  • The water is drinkable, although it is not the most popular native drink.
  • You can always expect student demonstrations.
  • Never turn your back on the President.
  • Never be seen with the Vice President.
  • If you leave your shoes outside the door, they will be stolen.
  • It is unsafe to walk on the street after dark.
  • Do not discuss the following sensitive issues with the natives: Vietnam War, Budget, Foreign Aid, Import-Exports.
  • Rate of exchange is .05 cents per one dollar (American).

From Andrews AFB, the astronauts and their wives flew by Marine helicopter directly to the lawn of the White House, where President and Mrs Nixon welcomed them home.

And the long trip was finally over. But not necessarily the Giantstep Presidential goodwill tour. Due to scheduling conflicts, a visit to Canada could not be scheduled in the same time frame as the rest of the tour, so the Apollo 11 astronauts made a special trip to Ottawa and Montreal on Dec. 2 and 3, 1969.

Drake Tears Through Hits, Teases New Album and Summer Tour at Career-Spanning SiriusXM Apollo Show

ATLANTA, GA - DECEMBER 9: Rapper Drake performs onstage during "Lil Baby & Friends Birthday Celebration Concert" at State Farm Arena on December 9, 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Prince Williams/Wireimage)

Drake took New York City on a “journey” through his career at a special SiriusXM concert at Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater Saturday night, with help from 21 Savage and Harlem legends the Diplomats.

The Toronto rapper tore through his biggest hits and deep cuts (does Drake even have deep cuts?), transforming the stage from his childhood bedroom to a record label boardroom to a New York City bodega.

Related Stories

Xbox dominated summer game fest — but game pass remains tricky bet, 'reservation dogs' deserved more emmy love throughout its run — now, this is the tv academy's last chance to recognize it, popular on variety.

Early on, the rapper found himself repeatedly urging the crowd to up the energy. “We’re going there tonight, I promise you,” he assured an audience that, at least in the back of the room, was surprisingly tame. “Don’t play shy with me.”

But when the set changed from his mom’s basement to a boardroom – where Drake rapped to a man in a suit representing the labels that passed on him early in his career – he hit the Apollo with a much-needed triple shot of espresso: “Best I Ever Had,” “Over” and “Headlines.”

In fact, there were entire stretches of the show packed with No. 1 songs, from “God’s Plan” to “One Dance” to “In My Feelings.” It’s easy to forget how many hits Drake has until you see a crowd sing back nearly every word to a 40-song set that didn’t even bother to include “Nice for What,” “Hotline Bling,” “Toosie Slide” or “Popstar.”

After a second interlude, the set turned into a Harlem street corner, with none other than the Diplomats entering onstage through a bodega door. Dressed in Cam’ron’s famous pink mink, Drake performed “I Really Mean It,” “Dipset Anthem” and “We Fly High (Ballin)” with Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Freekey Zekey. Before they left the stage, Drake praised the influential New York rap collective, who then gifted him with a custom OVO x Dipset bracelet. “These guys right here from Harlem made us dress different, talk different, walk different, rap different all the way in Canada,” he said.

Then, blasting from the past to the present, Drake brought out 21 Savage for a slew of songs from their 2022 collaborative effort “Her Loss.” Standing in front of a giant neon Apollo sign, the duo traded verses on “Rich Flex,” “Privileged Rappers,” “Knife Talk” and “Jimmy Cooks.” In between songs, they teased a joint tour this year, with Drake saying, “We’re gonna be out on the road this summer.” He also assured fans that he’s not going away any time soon, hinting at a 2023 solo album.

Toward the end of the set, Drake shared heartfelt gratitude for his fans: “I appreciate all of those people that stick by me. I know it’s like a cool thing … to be like ‘fuck Drake’ … but I deeply appreciate everybody for continuing to support us.”

He added, “I’ve thought about a bunch of things in life, but at this moment in time none of those things are stopping making music for you, so I’ll be here for you for a little bit at least. And I hope I can strike up more emotions for you, maybe this year. I might get bored and make another one, who knows!”

After closing the show with “Legend,” Drake cut the music and once again thanked those in the audience. “I don’t know how the fuck we made it here, but we did.”

For as braggadocious as his rap persona is, Drake was sincerely humbled by the magnitude of this career milestone. Capping off a 90-minute celebration of his journey from mixtape peddler to one of the world’s most successful hitmakers, he told the crowd, “My name’s Drake, I’m from Toronto,” as if he were right back in that boardroom introducing himself for the first time.

The show will additionally air on Drake’s exclusive SiriusXM channel Sound 42; Lady Gaga, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Pearl Jam have also previously performed for SiriusXM at the Apollo.

Sons of Apollo

Sons of Apollo – Band Overview

Sons of Apollo is a progressive metal band consisting of established virtuoso musicians, including two former Dream Theater members. The band so far has released two full-length albums, one EP, one live album, and three singles.

It is a supergroup formed in 2017 and composed of Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, Derek Sherinian, Jeff Scott Soto, and Ron Thal. Portnoy, Sheehan, and Sherinian have already worked together on an instrumental project with Tony MacAlpine and decided to join forces yet again. In this post, we are going to talk about this band, its lineup, its discography, and everything related to this metal powerhouse project. We have a lot to cover, so let us start without a further redo.

History of the Band

Sherinian and Portnoy played together before forming this supergroup, from which Sherinian was asked to leave in 1999, while Portnoy formed the group The Winery Dogs. Portnoy, Sherinian, and Sheehan also worked on an instrumental project with Tony MacAlpine called PSMS.

Since they knew each other well, Portnoy considered inviting MacAlpine to be part of the Sons of Apollo. The name of the band was suggested by Sherinian after he took a closer look at Portnoy’s list of suggestions and saw the word “Apollo” among them.

According to Portnoy, the Sons of Apollo came together organically. He and Sherinian reunited shortly after the departure from Dream Theater in 2010. Sherinian pursued Portnoy to create a full-time band, and given Portnoy’s packed schedule, it took three years to do so. In late 2016, other band members were recruited, and the idea became a reality.

Billy Sheehan – Bass

billy sheehan

William “Billy” Sheehan was born on March 19, 1953, in Buffalo, New York. He is an American bass player mostly known for his work with Talas, Steve Vai , David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, Niacin, and, of course, the Sons of Apollo.

He made a name for himself for his “lead bass” playing style, including the use of chording, two-handed tapping, three-finger picking technique, and controlled feedback. He is a highly influential musician and has been voted “Best Rock Bass Player” five times in Guitars Player readers’ polls.

Mike Portnoy – Drums

mike portnoy

Mike Portnoy is an American musician born on April 20, 1967, and one of the founding members of the legendary band Dream Theater . He was an integral part of the band’s songwriting and overall management until he went separate ways in 2010.

His idea was to put the band on hold for a period, but other members did not see eye-to-eye with him on this subject. Portnoy decided to quit, and the rest of the band carried on without him. He continued to work in other bands and on different projects, including Sons of Apollo.

Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal – Guitars

ron bublefoot thal

Ron Jay Blumenthal is an American guitarist, producer, and songwriter born on September 25, 1969, better known by his stage name Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, or just Bumblefoot. His nickname originates from the bacterial infection of the same name, which he learned while he was helping his wife study for veterinary exams.

He made a name for himself for his exceptional guitar technique and was one of two lead guitarists in Guns N’ Roses from 2006 until 2014. He released ten solo albums and a live DVD and has appeared as a guest performer on albums by other artists and on multiple compilation albums. He currently plays the guitar for the Sons of Apollo.

Derek Sherinian – Keyboards

derek sherinian Sons of Apollo

Derek Sherinian is an American keyboardist born on August 25, 1966, and is one of the founding members of Dream Theater. He is also a founder of Planet X and one of the founding members of Black Country Communion and the Sons of Apollo.

Throughout his career, he released eight solo albums that featured various prominent guest musicians, including Slash, Yngwie Malmsten, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Lukather, Joe Bonamassa, Billy Sheehan, Zakk Wilde, and Al Di Meola. Sherinian made a name for himself for his versatility and aggressive “guitaristic” approach to his signature keyboard-playing style.

Jeff Scott Soto – Vocals

jeff scott soto Sons of Apollo

Jeff Scott Soto is an American vocalist of Puerto Rico descent born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 4, 1965. He is known for being the vocalist on Yngwie Malmsten’s first two albums and briefly being the lead vocalist for Journey between 2006 and 2007.

Soto also sang lead vocals in the band Eyes and had a long tenure as the front of a hard rock band called Talisman. Nowadays, he works as a solo artist with his self-named band SOTO and as a vocalist of the supergroups W.E.T., Sons of Apollo, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Jeff has a pretty unique style and ranges from hard rock to power metal.

Discography

The band has been active since 2017, and since then, they have released two full-length albums, one EP, one live album, and four singles. In the section below, we are going to focus on their full-length releases.

Psychotic Symphony (2017)

psychotic symphony

Musically, this album was very well-crafted though not too unpredictable for the genre. It sort of toes the line between Dream Theater-style progressive metal and sometimes with moments that could be considered power metal.

There are enough dynamics here to please the fans of either genre, and Jeff Scott Soto does an incredible job with vocals to make that possible. He punctures each chorus with emotional delivery and lifts each track to a higher level, which is especially notable in their debut track “Signs of the Time” .

The virtuosic ability of each musician is also highlighted, and the instrumentation is clearly on point from the very start until the end of the album. The moods of the album generally vary, but it is overall very complex, dramatic, and uncompromising, which is something to be expected from such a talented lineup.

MMXX (2020)

mmxx

It is difficult to talk about Sons of Apollo releases without spotlighting the strong Dream Theater influences on their debut album, and their sophomore release was not any different in that regard. Portnoy’s grooves are in full swing on this release, and the overall structures of the songs, as well as rhythm patterns, are packed with classic prog flavors.

MMXX does come with improvements compared to its predecessor, as it engages listeners at a much higher level. The songs are hit with infectious keyboard melodies, strong groovy riffs, and catchy choruses.

Tracks revolve around verse-chorus structures with extended bridge sections of soloing and experimental riffing with almost a jam-session feel. The overall style is much heavier, emerging from the beefy guitar and bass tones, and all of that is crowned with Portnoy’s heavy-hitting work.

The MMXX album is a logical step forward from Psychotic Symphony. For fans of progressive music, heavy or light, old or new, techy or classy, this release has something that can please pretty much any fan of the genre.
