An emerald oasis, Ajmer lies in a valley encircled by the ancient Aravalli Range in the state of Rajasthan. Ajmer was founded on barren hills in the 7th Century A.D by Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan naming it Ajaymeru. The first fort was built at Taragarh here at Ajmer, which made the city a centre for power. The Afghans took over reins from Prithviraj Chauhan the last of the Chauhans. A turbulent set of three centuries followed thereafter. Emperor Akbar declared it a province in 1556 A.D. It became the headquarters for Mughal operations in Rajasthan. After the Mughal decline the Scindias of Gwalior gained power in Ajmer. The British influenced Ajmer in a different way. Top of the line Educational institutions like Mayo College and King George Military school came up to cater to the princely class. Till date Ajmer is home to many prestigious public schools. At a distance of 2 km from Ajmer Junction Railway Station, Anasagar Lake is an artificial lake situated in Ajmer, Rajasthan. It is one of the beautiful lakes in Rajasthan and also one of the top tourist places in Ajmer. Ana Sagar Lake was built by raising a dam across the Luni or Lavanavari River. The lake was built by Arnoraja Chauhan, the grandfather of Prithviraj Chauhan, in 1135 - 1150 AD and was named after him. The lake comprises catchments that were built with the help of local populace. Spread over 13 km, Anasagar Lake is the biggest Lake in Ajmer with a depth of maximum of 4.4 m and can store about 4.75 million cubics of water. The lake also comprises Baradari or pavilions that were built by Shah Jahan in 1637 AD. According to legend, when the Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti arrived in Ajmer, he and his followers were banned from using waters of Ana Sagar. He requested to get a cup of water that was granted. At a distance of 500 m from Ajmer Dargah Sharif and 1.5 km from Ajmer Junction Railway Station, Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra is an ancient mosque situated near Dargah Sharif in Ajmer town of Rajasthan. It is one of the oldest mosques in India and also the oldest surviving monument in Ajmer. The site is now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. Adhai Din Ka Jhopra, literally means 'shed of two and a half days', was built by Qutbuddin Aibak, the first Sultan of Delhi. The site of Adhai Din Ka Jhopra was originally a Sanskrit college commissioned by Vigraharaja IV, a king of the Shakambhari Chauhan dynasty. Based on a tablet found at the site, the original building must have been constructed sometime before 1153 CE. It was partially destroyed and converted into a mosque by Qutbuddin Aibak on the orders of Muhammad Ghori in 1192 CE. Nareli Jain Temple, also known as Sri Gyanodaya Tirth Kshetra, is a modern edifice built by Ashok Patni of RK Marbles. The Ajmer Sharif Dargah

Also popular as Khwaja Saheb or Khwaja Sharif, the Muslims of South Asia consider it no less than the Mecca or Medina. The Mausoleum

The mausoleum features a huge gate built by the Nizam of Hyderabad . The right side of the courtyard has the Akbari Masjid which is built of white marbles and is of particular interest for the visitors. The courtyard boasts another mosque built by Shahjahan and two gigantic cauldrons. Located at the inner court of the Dargah, Shahjahan’s mosque is a superb building made with fine white marble.

The Saint's Tomb

Ajmer Museum

Once popular as the royal abode of Emperor Akbar, the museum features a rich storehouse of the Mughal and Rajput body armour and delicate sculptures. The edifice is built of red sandstones, which have been positioned in a square pattern giving it a wonderful outlook.

Taragarh Fort

A cluster of marble pavilions in Ajmer, this 17th Century monument garden called Baradari dates all the way back to Shah Jahan. The architecture of this place is splendid, and makes for many a syllabus textbooks. There are hamams, open pools, pavilions and gardens and a lake nearby. One of the pavilions is the largest of its kind, made just like Diwan-e-Khaas of Delhi . These are just some of the reasons people visit Baradari, but the foremost is its unparalleled beauty and peace.

Nareli Jain Temple

A Jain temple located 7 km from the city centre, Nareli Temple is a mix of modern as well as traditonal styles. There are 24 other small temples on top of the hill behind, symbolising the 24 thirthankars of Jainism. The Digambara sect of Jains considers this place as their pilgrimage. The designs, carvings and sculptures here also attract non-Jain tourists in Ajmer.

Buland Darwaza

Ajmer’s Buland Darwaza is an Islamic design, narrating the glorious reign of Emperor Akbar. The tall semi-octagonal towers were built to commemorate the victory of Akbar over Khandesh. This door is the southern entry gateway to Dargah Sharif. The craftsmanship of this door is worth seeing, and when you are in Ajmer, you will inevitably pass through this darwaza at least once.

Nasiyan Jain Temple

Another Jain temple in Ajmer is the Nasiyan Temple, dating back to 1865. It is located on Prithvi Raj Marg. Locals also call it Lal Mandir as it is dedicated to Adinath, the first thirthankar. There is a prayer hall with the idol of Lord Adinath, a museum and a gilded gallery showcasing five stages of Lord Adinath’s life. This is a grand shrine, with gold and silver embellishments, Belgium stain glass windows and stately golden illustrations on glass.

Maharana Pratap Smarak

Maharana Pratap is considered one of the bravest icons of Rajputana culture. His memorials, statues and museums are found all over the state of Rajasthan . Then it is no surprise that Ajmer also holds a grand Maharana Pratap Smarak. He is celebrated as the last king of Rajasthan and is eternalised in this statue — of him sitting on his horse, ready for battle. The Smarak is located on top of a hill, hence affords you a panoramic view of the whole city. This is the reason the smarak is also called the King of the Hill.

Victoria Jubilee Clock Tower

The Victoria Jubilee Clock Tower, dating back to 19th Century, is a grand colonial structure that still stands tall. It is a famous landmark in the city and also renowned for its magnificent architecture. The mix of Indo-Islamic styles gives it a distinct persona. The tower was built to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee. The four balconies on four sides at the top of the tower give you great views of Ajmer.

Rangji Temple

Rangji is an avatar of Vishnu. Here in Ajmer, you will find one these rare shrines dedicated to Rangji. This holy ancient temple was built by a devotee from Hyderabad -- Seth Puran Mal Ganeriwal. Dating back to 1823, Rangji Temple is hence made in a Dravidian style, with added elements of Mughal and Rajput styles. You can visit Rangji Temple in Chote Basti on any day of the week, between 5 am and 7pm.

Prithviraj Smarak

Prithviraj Chauhan is the last ruler of India as we knew it before the Turks, Tuglaks and Mughals came invading. Prithviraj Chauhan not only defended his kingdom from his seat in Delhi multiple times, but fought valiantly against Mohommad Ghori even when he was cheated and captured. It is believed that he knew Shabd-bhedi-baan-vidya, a highly evolved skill to fire an arrow with his eyes closed, with only sound to guide. At the end he was blinded by hot oil, and only used sound to kill Ghori. But he was killed too, and as a result, India, Bharat, fell to the invaders. This smarak here in Ajmer celebrates such a warrior, because Prithviraj Chauhan was born of this soil.

The Sanganer Airport in Jaipur, around 135 kilometres, is the closest airport to Ajmer. The airport has excellent connections to major cities like Delhi and Mumbai. After arriving at the airport, you can arrange a taxi which would take around 3 hours to reach Ajmer. You have the option of pre-reserving a taxi or hiring one from one of the taxi vendors that are located outside the airport.

Ajmer is situated along the railway line that runs between Delhi, Jaipur, Marwar, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai. Given that most trains on this line stop at Ajmer, it has good rail accessibility. Shatabdi and Rajdhani are two of the most frequently travelled trains alongside Ashram Express and Chetak Express. Auto-rickshaws, buses, and cabs all are easily available when you arrive at the station.

Pushkar, which can be found 15 kilometres to the northwest of Ajmer, is considered to be one of the oldest cities in all of India. It is said that Lord Brahma, the Hindu God responsible for the creation of the universe, let a lotus flower fall to the ground, which resulted in the instantaneous formation of a lake. After that, he came to the conclusion that the location should be named after the flower, and thus the name Pushkar was born.

The construction of the Brahma temple goes back to the 14th century, with a partial rebuilding occurring later. The image of the four-headed deity Brahma and his consort Gayatri (mother of Vedas) are kept in the holiest part of the temple, the sanctum sanctorum. On the full moon of Kartik, known as Kartik Poornima, a celebration honouring Brahma is conducted. On this day, a significant number of pilgrims visit the temple after taking a dip in the holy lake.

Dargah Sharif

The tomb of the well-known Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti sometimes referred to as Garib Nawaz, can be found in Ajmer, about two kilometres distant from the major Railway Station. As a descendent of the Prophet Muhammad, many Muslims believe that Moinuddin Chisti travelled to India at Muhammad’s command (Muhammad appeared in his dream).

The tomb was built by Emperor Humayun in the 13th century, it has aspects of the splendid architecture of the Mughals, massive courtyards, and gates – among other things. Two enormous pots, which are placed in the centre of the inner courtyard, are used to prepare the prasad that is then given out to the worshippers. This is one of the most famous tourist places in Ajmer .

Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra

To the west of the Dargah Sharif, are the remains of Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra, a historical site. After capturing Ajmer in 1198, Sultan Ghori converted this building into a mosque, even though it had originally been designed to house a Sanskrit college.

This monument, which has domes, pillars, and arched walls, was subsequently remodelled by Sultan Iltutmish in the year 1213 to reflect a perfect combination of architectural elements from the Hindu and Islamic traditions. The mosque, whose name literally translates to “the hut of two and a half days,” is said to have been named after the Urs festival that took place in the 18th century and was held for “adhai din,” which literally translates to “two and a half days.”

Anasagar Lake

One of the most beautiful lakes in India, Anasagar Lake was constructed in the 12th century by Arnoraj Chauhan, who was the grandson of the renowned Prithviraj Chauhan. It is now one of the most popular sites to visit in Ajmer because of its breathtaking vistas, which provide the ideal backdrop for taking images that will live long in the memory. The best time to come is just before nightfall. This lake is not only beautiful to look at because of its surroundings, but it also serves as a location for various water activities, such as water scooter rides and boating.

Soniji Ki Nasiyan

A magnificent holy monument dedicated to Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankara, Soniji Ki Nasiyan is also known as the Red Temple (Lal Mandir). This temple was built in the 19th century, and it has elaborate construction, with the entryway being constructed of red stone. Nareli Jain Temple
