Zagreb is made for strolling. Wander through the Upper Town's red-roof and cobblestone glory, peppered with church spires. Crane your neck to see the domes and ornate upper-floor frippery of the Lower Town's mash-up of secessionist, neo-baroque and art deco buildings. Search out the grittier pockets of town where ugly-bland concrete walls have been transformed into colourful murals by local street artists. This city rewards those on foot.

How to spend a long weekend in Zagreb, Croatia

Lined with hip cafes, leafy parks and unique museums, Croatia’s cool capital presents plenty of sights and activities for a long weekend city break.

zagreb tourist board

In the northwest of Croatia, Zagreb is a dynamic capital city that delights and dazzles with its breezy cafe culture, regal architecture and high-end gastronomy scene focused on seasonal, farm-to-table produce. The city sits on the banks of the Sava River, with the lush Medvednica Mountain providing the northern backdrop. Its laid-back centre boasts not only a wealth of gardens, parks and lakes, but also a notably independent spirit. It's a vibrant hub resisting chain stores and nurturing local organisations and vendors. Residents and visitors alike frequent the many museums and galleries and pack out the eclectic festivals that take place throughout the year. With so much to see and do, here’s how to spend a long weekend in Croatia’s capital.

What to see

Zagreb’s city centre is packed with impressive architecture — from the opulent, pastel-painted art nouveau buildings that line Ban Jelačić Square to the magnificent gothic cathedral. A short but sweet funicular takes visitors up to Gradec, the city’s hilltop heart, where the indomitable Lotrščak Tower stands proudly, home to the Grič cannon that blasts daily at noon. The treasured 13th-century St Mark’s Church is another standout in Gradec — its tiled roof featuring the blue, red and white motifs of the Croatian coat of arms and Zagreb’s castle emblem.

There are plenty of coffeeshops around the city in which to refuel — among the pick is Botaničar on Lenuci’s Horseshoe, a group of U-shaped parks, squares and a botanical garden that’s home to various statues, galleries and attractions. For another nature hit, take the cable-car up to Sljeme, the peak of Medvednica Mountain to the north of the city — and the perfect place for a woodland walk. Locals love to spend summer evenings relaxing with a drink by the idyllic Lake Jarun or sampling the libations on offer in the city centre’s chic cocktail bars — A’e Craft Bar has an incredible view of the cathedral and makes a mean Moscow mule.

zagreb tourist board

In addition to the unmissable ethnographic and contemporary art institutions in the city centre and Novi Zagreb, below the Sava River, Zagreb is home to a variety of exceptional museums that range from long-established collections of art and artefacts to the more quirky and unusual. Full of personal stories, the Museum of Broken Relationships houses items donated by the public that’ll make you laugh and (probably) cry. The Museum of Illusions is, as the name suggests, packed full of entertaining trompe-l’oeil optical illusions to examine. Or, take a tasting tour through the history of the world’s favourite sweet treat at the Zagreb Chocolate Museum , which also tells in the story of beloved local brand Kraš.

Where to eat

Ivana Tkalčićeva Street, off Ban Jelačić Square, is the city’s prime destination for al fresco dining, where you can find a range of international restaurants serving everything from Greek to Sri Lankan fare. But for truly authentic Croatian cuisine, Restoran Stari Fijaker is the place to go — this old-school spot is one of the last in the city centre that serves delectable, traditional dishes such as pašticada (braised beef in sweet and sour sauce).

Gastronomy-focused travellers will want to book a table at fine-dining spot Dubravkin Put , which presents plates so beautifully crafted it almost seems a shame to tuck in. Equally as high-end, but remarkably down to earth, the team at Sopal bring their concept of ‘fun dining’ to haute cuisine with a tasting menu that spins a contemporary take on traditional local dishes. For delicious vegan and vegetarian options, head to Zrno Bio Bistro . In addition to heavenly stews and soups, the locally sourced, organic menu includes a tasty vegetarian burger — a vegetable and tofu patty on a chickpea pancake served with marinated zucchini.

Bird's-eye view of blue Lake Jarun in Zagreb, Croatia, with greenery surrounding.

Zagreb comes alive in the summer with an assortment of exciting art and performance events, concerts, festivals, food pop-ups, film screenings and more — including electronic music festival, Let The Music Be Free , and colossal rock festival, InMusic , which take over the grounds of Lake Jarun in June. Temperatures soar up to an average of 28C in peak summer, so aim to visit early or late in the season and plan to spend some time cooling off lakeside. Autumn in the capital is relaxed and breezy while maintaining a temperate climate averaging 22C in September and 10C in November, providing the perfect conditions for long walks and hiking up to Sljeme.

Visit Zagreb during winter for a slew of colourful Christmas events, which are sure to get even the grinchiest travellers in a jolly holiday mood — the most notable is Zagreb’s Advent , with the city's Christmas market touted as one of Europe’s best. Although temperatures are chilly this time of year, with an average high of 4C in January, snow can turn the city into a winter wonderland. In spring, the capital's parks and gardens bloom beautifully with fragrant flora, and the dazzling Festival of Lights marks the arrival of the season with neon installations and sculptures glowing around town. The city is usually sun-drenched, too, with pleasantly fresh temperatures averaging between 12C and 22C from mid-March until May.

Check out Zagreb's surprise new art installations

In collaboration with the Zagreb Tourist Board, the artistic project “Okolo” invites you again this year to embark on a unique artistic stroll through Zagreb until August 30th. Take a fresh look at the city streets from a different perspective and discover surprises prepared for you at every turn by international and local artists and designers.

For the sixth time, “Okolo” is scheduling an encounter with art in hidden alleyways, forgotten passages, the treetops of Zagreb’s parks, and the corners of the Upper Town. Leading the list of artists leaving their mark on Zagreb this year are international names: Isaac Cordal and Ememem.

Isaac Cordal, a Spanish artist known for his ingenious miniature worlds, has found a home in Zagreb for his latest small sculptures placed in urban settings to comment on modern society in his unique way.

“Street Healing Art” will be demonstrated by Ememem, a street art collective from Lyon known for embellishing cracked sidewalks, roadways, and facades worldwide with their distinctive colorful ceramic tile mosaics. Cordal’s “Cement Eclipse” can be found at eight locations: Kaptol 4, Dolac 2, Tomić’s stairs by number 9, Tomić’s stairs by the passage, Ilica 12, Zakmardi stairs, Bloody Bridge, and Small stairs. Ememem will leave his unique mark on the stairs by the passage of the Jägerhorn Hotel after August 25th.

In addition to them, the city’s streets come to life with intriguing site-specific installations and street art interventions by well-known names from the local art scene. You can find two completely different textile installations at two locations.

Sculptor Ida Blažičko, best known for her ambient-textile installations in public spaces, presents the textile sculpture “Waves” on Illyric Square, adapted to the unique atmosphere of the historical Zagreb location. Meanwhile, fashion designer Damir Begović, known for creating visually and texturally rich collections inspired by his native Slavonia, has placed an impressive spatial installation, “Folk Graffiti Ponjava,” at the corner of Splavnica and Tkalčićeva Street, celebrating the ethnographic tradition through a modern lens.

Two designers explore city and summer motifs. Gajeva Street becomes a gathering place for recognizable denizens of the streets and squares – pigeons – as seen through the eyes of Ivana Mrčela in “High Noon.” Once believed to represent virtues like tenderness, love, sacrifice, communication, human fellowship, grace, and peace, pigeons are remarkably happy birds.

This pink “cloud of pigeons” invites visitors to join the flock and embrace their optimism. Jelena Malenica, on the other hand, transforms the passageway beneath the Uspinjača funicular into a rich field of dried flowers in “Endless Summer.” Crafted from authentic flora from the hinterlands of Šibenik and placed in the urban landscape, this installation, accompanied by the sounds of cicadas, evokes the feeling of an “endless summer.”

A dedicate photographic intervention to the great Croatian and beloved Zagreb photographer with a unique authorial style, Slavka Pavić, who has spent over 70 years documenting cityscapes and photographic experiments, also features.

Over 20 large-format photographs documenting essential aspects of Zagreb’s everyday life, placed at various poster locations, commemorate the artistic creativity and unique poetic of this legendary photographer who was inclined towards subjective photography. The “Photo Diaries of Slavka Pavić” can be found at Kaptol, Zakmardi stairs, Šoštarićeva Street, and Varšavska Street from August 22nd. At the same time, humorous interactive posters connected in a “Roundabout” format, designed by Pavla Kuharić from the Verlauf design studio, reinterpret the meaning of the advertising pillar as an informative object. These posters will appear on Dolac, Ban Jelačić Square – Splavnica, and Ban Jelačić Square – Prague Street.

On this occasion, Martina Bienenfeld, the director of the Zagreb Tourist Board, stated: “We have supported the Okolo project since its inception in 2018 because we believe that this form of artistic expression enriches our cultural heritage and diversity while enhancing Zagreb’s tourist offering. Zagreb is, from a tourism perspective, a hub of contemporary artistic creativity and a leader in urban culture in Croatia. Okolo, through inspiring installations by artists, creates a unique experience of public urban spaces in a non-invasive and sustainable manner. As a project, Okolo grows and evolves from year to year, so I am excited that this August it will present new urban interventions that stimulate reflection and contribute to raising awareness of the values and impact of art on our daily lives.”

By placing artistic works in the urban landscape, “Okolo” revitalizes public spaces and transforms them into places where art spontaneously intersects with the city’s daily life. It places local artists and their personal experiences and visions of the city in the forefront while introducing contemporary art to a broader audience.

zagreb tourist board

“Okolo” was initiated in 2018 by Nas dve (Ana Mikin and Tina Kovačićek) in collaboration with the Zagreb Tourist Board. Murals like “Lonac” in Klaićeva, “The Red Carpet to the Upper Town,” “Blue Clouds and the Singing Forest” in Bele IV Park, “Golden Hands” in the Craftsmen’s Passage, the woolen heart that became a symbol of Zagreb’s recovery after the earthquake, the silk sculpture in Tomiće’s, the large floor mural above Dubravkin Put, the light installation in the treetops of Ribnjak Park, the “Kumica” on the steps of Dolac, the sleeping giant on Petrinjska, charming street miniatures playing with urban elements, and plants that sing when touched are just a few of the intriguing interventions that “Okolo” has already brought to the streets of Zagreb, delighting both residents and tourists.

Explore the artistic side of Zagreb. You can follow the interventions on the Facebook and Instagram pages or spot them while walking through the city, marked by the red circular symbol. This event is realized with the support of the Zagreb Tourist Board, the City of Zagreb, the Ministry of Culture and Media, and the Zagreb Photo Club.

Check out the first art installations and street interventions that have appeared around the city and go on a small art tour of Zagreb.

1. ISAAC CORDAL – “Cement Eclipse”

Locations: Kaptol 4, Dolac 2, Tomićeve Stube by No. 9, Tomićeve Stube by the Passageway, Ilica 12

Pomrčina Cementa (Cement Eclipse) is a nomadic project composed of a series of urban interventions dedicated to small figurative sculptures that contemplate contemporary society. The central figure is a stereotypical middle-aged, bald, uniformed man in a gray suit. The selection of locations plays a leading role, turning them into semantic spaces where we observe the passage of time, transient decadence, and reflections on our own imperfections. The artist employs humor and irony in a measured, ambiguous manner, always on the brink of drama, leaving viewers wondering whether to laugh or cry.

2. IDA BLAŽIIČKO – “Waves”

Location: Ilirski Trg (Illyric Square)

Waves symbolize the deep connection between humans and water, situated at Illyric Square where locals once rested and refreshed themselves from the well. The contemplative harmony with the natural surroundings and the interplay of light, space, and textiles evoke almost tangible feelings of presence and absence. More than a mere object, Waves are a dance of light and shadow, a bridge connecting observers with nature. In the silence of the dialogue with Illyric Square, the sculpture invites passersby to discover the familiar in an entirely new light.

3. IVANA MRČELA – “High Noon”

Location: Gajeva 2

High Noon pays homage to Zagreb’s pigeons that take flight when the Gric cannon fires at precisely noon. Pigeons were once believed to embody virtues such as tenderness, love, sacrifice, communication, human unity, grace, and peace, making them exceptionally content birds. They possess qualities increasingly scarce in today’s world. This pink “cloud of pigeons” invites visitors to join the flock and share in their optimism.

4. JELENA MALENICA – “Endless Summer”

Location: Passageway by Tomić’s Stairs

Endless Summer is a multisensory installation that transforms the passageway beneath the Uspinjača funicular into a rich field of dried flowers. Crafted from authentic flora from the hinterlands of Šibenik and placed in the urban landscape, even on the scorching asphalt, the installation evokes the feeling of an “endless summer.”

5. DAMIR BEGOVIĆ – “Folk Graffiti Ponjava”

Location: Dolac Stube (Dolac Stairs)

Folk Graffiti Ponjava emerged from textiles, inspired by the idea of merging tradition with contemporary trends. The inspiration from the native region and ethnographic motifs is connected with graffiti as symbols of the city. A kind of patchwork of layers, fueled by love for heritage, becomes a powerful visual message about who we are, what we represent, and where we belong.

Top 15 Reasons to Visit Zagreb

Zagreb Advent Christmas Market Guide

Here is why you need to Visit Zagreb. The top reasons which make Zagreb stand out. The real question is not if it’s worth visiting, but how long you should stay!

I live in Zagreb all my life and I truly wish you come to Zagreb and experience it for yourself. The Croatian Capital is perfect for exploring as it is laid on a relatively flat surface. That is why it can be easily explored on foot, or by bike.

If you believe you have nothing to do in Zagreb for more than a couple of days, think again. Not only is Zagreb filled with a full range of diverse sights and attractions for everyone. But also it is surrounded with truly exceptional sights. Within an hour and a half drive, you can be sipping coffee at the Adriatic Coast, hike Plitvice Lakes, explore Croatia’s Castles or experience truly local and exceptional food at one of Croatia’s Village Family Households.

This whole guide is one big Tip on what to do in Zagreb. It’s not just a city to be passed by, it’s a city to be lived!

Once I started this guide I thought to mention 10 top reasons to Visit Zagreb. However, once I started writing I just kept going… I made it 15 so not to overdo it. I did not mention it, but we also have amazing Ice Creams, Schnaps and exceptional local designers. Trust me there is so much more! If we go even beyond Zagreb, you can easily spend a couple of weeks and you will not regret it.

Here are the Top 15 reasons to Visit Zagreb / Click and Jump To

#1 perfect for exploring, compact, flat and engaging, #2 our cafe culture, #3 unusual and unique attractions, #4 local produce, #5 croatian beer and wine, #6 croatian and regional cuisine, #7 medvednica mountain, #8 romantic escapes at zagreb parks, #9 museums for everyone, #10 zagreb architecture, #11 beautiful women, #12 numerous festivals and events, #13 low prices, #14 great atmosphere, #15 welcoming and helpful locals.

Zagreb From Above | Photo: D Rostuhar | Zagreb Tourist Board

Although we have an Upper Town and Lower Town, Zagreb is actually situated on a relatively flat surface.

Most of its attractions are condensed close by. Zagreb Upper Town holds most of Zagreb most known attractions and if you would merely walk it, you can see everything within a couple of hours.

I recommend this if you haven’t got the time to explore, but Zagreb Upper Town holds some truly Unique Gems and it is a shame not to explore them.

You all know of the Zagreb Cathedral , Saint Marks Church , Lotršćak Tower , etc. But what you can also see is Meštrović Atelier , Museum of Broken Relationships , Zagreb City Museum , Croatian Museum of Naive Art and so much more. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

On the other hand, you have The Lower Town. The place where the Croatian National Theatre is situated. Alongside Mimara Museum , Museum of Arts and Crafts , Technical Museum Nikola Tesla . The place for great bars, pubs and restaurants.

And by far the best thing is both of them are very close by and easily explored. I mean they are connected by the shortest Funicular in the world .

What we did not go into if you scratch the surface a bit more and explore a bit further. Zagreb ZOO and Maksimir Park , Museum of Contemporary Art , Lisinski Concert Hall , Zagreb Fountains with their evening show and even beyond.

Zagreb truly is compact and perfect for exploring!

Zagreb Courtyards | Photo: Marija Gasparovic | Zagreb Tourist Board

When I say “our”, I mean whole of Croatia. This is the one thing we all agree on and enjoy. We take our coffee seriously and enjoy it immensely.

Just stroll through the streets of Zagreb during warm and sunny days and take notice to the cafe terraces.

They are filled with people, friends and families. Talking about current affairs, gossiping politicians, going through their problems. It’s a time that connects us and although you might not think it, time well spent!

If in Zagreb, or Croatia, do it like the locals. Sit down with your entourage, get a drink and make most of your time!

Zagreb 80s Museum

Zagreb, although over 900 years old, is constantly developing. New types of attractions and locations keep popping out.

Unusual and Unique spaces which give you a new type of experience. The Museum of Broken Relationships is not some much a museum of broken loves, but most of all a museum of Emotions. Zagreb 80’s Museum will take you back in time to experience what life was like in the 80’s. Backo Mini Express will bring out your inner child, wanting you to play with toy trains again.

Zagreb has it all. Both the classic and unique attractions . It only depends on what you’re into.

Zagreb Dolac Market

When in Zagreb you have to pass by Dolac Market . It is the largest Open Air Farmers Market in Zagreb. Locals display and sell their homegrown goods. Actually, you can find almost anything there. But I suggest you take a stroll and look at the souvenirs, local vegetables, meat, cheese, also from all over Croatia. It is by far the best place to find Local Croatian Produce.

Don’t get me wrong they have imported goods as well, but mostly you will be able to find great Croatian products.

Croatia is just starting to place itself on the beer and wine world map. As the capital, it is also the best place to find and try it. The latest burst in local craft beers can be found at pubs and bars. Where the best wines can be found at our restaurants.

If you like it and wish to take some back home (if you can), there are several specialised wine and craft beer shops in the city.

Zagreb Cuisine Plava Ponistra | Zagreb Tourist Board

One thing I can say for certain that Zagreb is bursting with restaurants and flavours. The best of all, you will have difficulty choosing the best one.

Zagreb is in the crossroads between east and west has a mixture of continental and Mediterranean cuisine. You can find both fusion options and traditional restaurants all over the city.

Craving vegetarian, burgers, barbecue, pizzas or fish. Don’t worry Zagreb has you covered.

Zagreb Medvednica Mountain

I love hiking Medvednica, Zagreb Nature Park . It is basically a forest retreat at your fingertips. It helps me relax, get inspiration and having a great time with my family.

Although our cable car has been dismantled and we are looking forward to our new one, the Sljeme peak is just 1000 meters high. We have forest paths of all difficulty types so anyone can get to the top. If you really believe you can’t make it there is a public bus going straight to the top.

Whilst hiking to the top you will breathe in fresh air and be presented with some amazing views of Zagreb and its surroundings.

Nevertheless, there are numerous Medvednica Mountain lodges all over Medvednica. It is by far the best place to experience real Croatian highlander food and coffee. Just don’t climb on Mondays as most mountain lodges are closed.

Zagreb City Landscape | Photo: Marija Gasparovic | Zagreb Tourist Board

Zagreb Gardens and Parks are perfect places to relax, go for a stroll, have a picnic and even sunbathe. They offer the perfect place to escape the summer heat and sneak in a kiss with your loved ones.

Maybe you heard of Zagreb Lenucci Green Horseshoe ? It is actually a vision of Milan Lenuci as a park system which consists of seven squares aligned on three straight lines. Basically, it is a U-shaped system of parks and squares in the Lower City. One of the best routes for exploring the city.

Did you know that Zagreb has the biggest number of museums per capita in the world? I’m not surprised as Zagreb Museums provide a wide variety of treasured wonders. From the classic and traditional to the contemporary arts. All the way to the latest interactive exhibitions.

As the city is and always will be at the intersection between East and West it lives and breathes history. Unfortunately, we had our fair share of invasion forces and the only benefit from it is the heritage and knowledge they left behind. Most of which is preserved at our museums.

Zagreb Architecture

I must say, Zagreb Architecture truly offers a genuine mixture of the past and the present. On one side Austro-Hungarian architecture and on the other rough-around-the-edges socialist structures.

In the Upper and Lower Town, you will see the highest influence of neo-Baroque. This part of town has been developed during our period under the Austro-Hungarian rule. But just across the railroad which splits Zagreb between styles, you can find the socialist, communist, part of Zagreb.

Basically, to summarise on the north, you have the older parts of Zagreb with its Gothic and Neo-Renaissance styles. And on the south side, you have the socialist, communist part.

Be that as it may, today you will find modern architecture popping up all over. Regardless of the former development stages.

The world has stated that Balkan women are the most beautiful in the world. And I have to say Zagreb doesn’t fall short. As a man, I can only claim that Zagreb has beautiful women. I can’t judge men objectively.

Regardless, I find all Croatian people beautiful in both soul and physical appearance.

Zagreb Events Festivals

Zagreb is becoming a centre stage for numerous Festivals and Events. Even though the city isn’t big, something is always happening.

In fact, you have events all year round. Even during winter when we have the best Advent in Europe.

The city wants to place it on the European Festival and Event map and I believe we are either getting there or we are already there!

Zagreb is cheap and one of the most budget-friendly cities in the world. It is filled with free and budget-friendly attractions and activities.

In fact, you can experience our Top 15 Attractions for just 11 EUR (80 HRK + Public transport ) per person! Don’t get me wrong, I want you to explore and live Zagreb as much as possible.

I’m just saying you don’t have to wait for special deals or offers as Zagreb is cheap. The city is mostly about the locals and local life.

Zagreb Attractions are either free or priced for Croatian standards. Looking for a place to eat, don’t worry most of them offer meals for up to 15 EUR.

Zagreb Street Performers | Photo: Saša Kaštelan | Zagreb Tourist Board

Zagreb is a great city to visit or to live in. It is safe and I find its size being an asset as you can easily get around and explore the sights. There is always something going on, whether a festival or event, you just need to come and experience it.

Zagreb is a perfect mixture of Balkan and Mediterranean spirit with a touch of a Western feel.

Don’t expect grandeur, expect local!

Advent Zagreb, Advent on European Square | Photo: S Kastelan | Zagreb Tourist Board

We are charming and straightforward. Willing to help and once we smile its catching. Were open and welcoming as hospitality is an essential part of our history and culture.

Once you arrive in Zagreb it feels like visiting an old friend. We love to talk and laugh. Don’t get me wrong we aren’t always polite. I would describe us as sincere and we don’t worry about courtesy.

I can say one thing is certain. We are always up for coffee, a glass of wine or a shot of rakija.

I truly hope we answered your questions and gave you reasons to visit Zagreb. We all love our city and cherish it deeply.

Total Croatia News

Updated on: April 20, 2023

abu-dhabi-Andy Buchanan.jpg

February 18, 2019 – Croatian media is reporting that Croatian tourism organisations have been defrauded of 45,000 euro, but the real story is a lot more interesting.

(Editor’s note – a big thank you to Goran Rihelj from HR Turizam, who first alerted us to the story several days ago. A lot of Goran’s research is included, and Croatian language readers can find his text on the subject here – his story will appear tomorrow and the link added).

It is not the first time in the history of conferences that an organiser has cancelled or disappeared with the money.

But could it be the first time that an organiser has managed to persuade a tourist board to host an event in Croatia after they already proved their unreliability by cancelling several major international conferences where the most prominent Croatian names were due to attend?

The Croatian media is today awash with stories of how a British couple organising a tourism conference, CETS Summit (Central European Tourism Summit in Zagreb) have disappeared without trace, taking with them at least 45,000 euro of tourist board money with them.

After Goran mentioned the fact that the event website had disappeared and exhibitors had been contacting him asking if they knew anything about the conference or how they could get their money back, I decided to take a closer look into the event and its British organisers, Andy and Lu Buchanan.

The relationship between Andy Buchanan and Croatia goes back a little beyond this failed CETS Summit. Indeed, here is Zlatan Muftic from the Zagreb Convention Bureau speaking in Abu Dhabi at the first (and only) World Halal Travel Summit back in 2015. A successful event organised by Andy Buchanan’s company, the same organiser at the proposed CETS Summit in Zagreb.

So far, so good.

And then things started to go a little wrong. The 2016 World Halal Travel Summit and the inaugural International Travel Week Abu Dhabi (ITW), organised by Buchanan, were both postponed due to regional tensions until 2017 and merged into one .

The confirmed 2017 Croatian attendance for ITW Abu Dhabi 2017 was strong .

“For now, participation at ITW Abu Dhabi is confirmed by 12 Croatian representatives: Bagatin Clinic, Specialty Hospital Arithera, Specialty Hospital Akromion, Croatian Tourism Board, Zagreb Tourism Board, Kvarner Tourism County Board, Kvarner Health Cluster, Međimurje Tourism Board, Municipality Krapina-Zagorje, Confutura agency, Terme Sv. Martin, IQ Cure resort, organized by Arabco Projects – official representative of ITW Abu Dhabi for Croatia and Adria region.”

The conference was cancelled two weeks before it was due to take place.

And so, after two years of postponed and cancelled conferences, official Croatian confidence in the company to deliver was so high that it was agreed to engage Buchanan’s company to hold a VERY ambitious tourism conference in Zagreb called CETS Summit (Central European Tourism Summit). Diamond sponsors of the event were the Croatian National Tourist Board, Zagreb Tourist Board, City of Zagreb and Croatia Airlines. Both tourist boards were well aware of the cancelled events in Abu Dhabi in 2016 and 2017.

(Andy Buchanan, photo source www.4seasonscroatia.com)

Buchanan was convincing after the success of the 2015 halal summit, even having ITB Berlin announce a partnership with ITW Abu Dhabi in October 2017.  The partnership lasted just a month until ITW Abu Dhabi 2017 was cancelled, as was confirmed in an email to TCN last week by ITB Berlin PR Manager for Corporate Communication, Julia Sonnemann.

“With regard to ITW Abu Dhabi, ITB Berlin occupied the role of marketing and alliance partner, but was not responsible in any way either for planning or staging the event. Over the years medical and halal travel have become increasingly important segments at ITB Berlin. Networking with ITW in Abu Dhabi as marketing partner therefore made sense in order to exploit the synergies of the two fairs. Thus, only the organisers of ITW can comment on the reason it has been cancelled. The partnership ended by the time ITW cancelled the event. So we are not cooperating with them anymore.”

As quickly as ITB Berlin distanced itself from Buchanan’s company, so Zagreb seemingly embraced it. After two years of non-delivery in Abu Dhabi, Buchanan’s Cacti Expo was engaged to deliver “Central Europe’s largest travel trade event.”

cets-sales.PNG

In December.

During Advent in Zagreb.

When Zagreb is not exactly empty.

Or businesses focused on business.

When I questioned the timing with the organisers, I was told that it was a deliberate decision from the tourist boards to hold it at the beginning of Advent to show that Croatia was ‘Full of Life’ all year round.

It seemed that the genius idea to hold the inaugural largest travel trade event in December when Zagreb was going to be full did not seem that appealing to conference participants, and Lu Buchanan explained to the media that it had been decided to reschedule the event for May 2019.

Industry experts I have spoken to have expressed their surprise at the size of the project for a first-time exhibition in a new location in December – 12,000m2 is a lot of space to fill. Too much, as it turned out.

“We believe that there will be more available rooms in the hotels in May, and spring offers opportunities for more sightseeing in both Zagreb and in its surroundings, as well as in other parts of Croatia, which are also in the CETS Zagreb program,” Buchanan explained.

It is always reassuring when you have both the Zagreb and national tourist boards involved that nobody is quite sure when might be the best month for available beds for a major international conference.

CETS_sajam.jpg

And so the event was rescheduled for May 7-8, 2019, with a welcome photo of Zagreb snow to get the delegates into that warm Spring feeling.

The company behind Cacti is based in Malaga, Spain. While Lu Buchanan stated to the media that Cent Euro Fairs SL has been trading for 25 years, this would appear to be news to the Spanish tax authorities, According to online records, the company is allegedly just one year old (formed on 25 January, 2018, a few days after the CETS team first contacted me), with a start-up capital of 3,000 euro and is yet to file any taxes .

The CETS Summit is due to take place in May. The website has disappeared (it is not totally offline – there was some recent activity after we started looking into the story, as permissions for documents available on the site suddenly changed), the organisers are not contactable, and the tourist boards and other partners have quietly removed all mention of the conference from their websites.

Is it necessary to let people know that the conference has been cancelled? Apparently not.

News of the failed conference broke in the Croatian media last night, with some 45,000 euro apparently lost . A number which I suspect is the tip of the iceberg, as several other exhibitors have contacted us for information in recent days.

The 45,000 euro cited in the Croatian media refers only to 16,500 paid by the Croatian National Tourist Board for a 50m2 and 29,100 euro by the Zagreb Tourist Board. There were many other tourist boards, both local and regional, taking part in this event. My understanding is that the Kvarner region was particularly interested in preparation for Rijeka becoming the European City of Culture in 2020. And let’s not forget the many non-tourist board businesses taking part.

Or that it was not just a Croatian event, but a regional one. HINA reports that the national tourist boards of Slovenia, Macedonia and Bosnia and Hercegovina were also taking part, as well as presumably some other businesses and tourist boards from those countries. Many will have paid their fees, but will they see them again? It is hardly a glorious advert for Zagreb as a conference centre. Suing a one-year-old company with a start-up capital of 3,000 euro where the owners have disappeared will be a challenge.

And it is not just the exhibitors who are out of pocket. International and local staff working for CETS Summit were laid off as far back as June last year – they are all owed money. I spoke to one of them today – lots of promises of money coming. Even the expenses of their sales trips were not paid. A feature story on this will be on TCN next week.

While efforts will no doubt continue to recover the money from a Spanish company with start-up capital of 3,000 euro and uncontactable owners, the larger question remains as to how the biggest official names in Croatian tourism could have proceeded with a conference which made little sense (as was evidenced by the lack of take-up) and with seemingly no due diligence or care that previous conferences by the same organisers had been cancelled.

arabco-abu.PNG

There is one more link to the story which has yet to be explained. Arabco Projects, a company based in Zagreb, has been actively trying to engage Croatian businesses in the Middle East since at least January 2015. It is still advertising itself as the certified partner of ITW Abu Dhabi. Perhaps they will have some answers. We have reached out to Arabco Projects and owner Petar Galovic, who has promised an official response to the situation with CETS, an event ‘with which he has no connection.’ As official partner of ITW Abu Dhabi, however, I understand that he was involved in dealing with and handling payments from Croatian participants for that cancelled event.

One thing is for sure – this is the latest chapter in the less than glorious chapter of Croatian tourism promotion, with more wasted money. The Kings of Accidental Tourism are back.
