Sedona Wine Tours You'll Love

Sedona wine tours take you into the heart of Arizona's wine country. Vineyards in this area are located in a high altitude, rich volcanic soil and weather that swings from hot, dry summers to August monsoons to cool nights and mild winters making it ideal for growing big, jammy reds like Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet, and even Chardonnays that can compete with any Napa white.

Going on a wine-tasting tour in Sedona lets you experience Arizona wine country at some of the finest Sedona, Arizona wine bars and wineries, and even offer overnight hotel wine packages. As the epicenter of Arizona wine country, Sedona offers a tremendous opportunity for visitors and locals to taste some of the country's best wines right here in one place. In fact, the Wall Street Journal recently acclaimed Sedona and the Verde Valley as an emerging hotspot vying for Napa-like status¹. Enjoy local Sedona wine tasting in the city's wine bars and on Sedona winery tours. You're sure to succumb to the romance of these Sedona wineries and wine-tasting rooms for their great ambiance, romance, fun, and of course, wine. One of the best parts of Sedona winemaking is that all the wineries in the area are small production facilities. Every bottle is the product of a winemaker's passion. You don't have to go to the vineyard to enjoy these wines, though. Local wines can be found in stores and on the menus of restaurants throughout the area.

How Did Sedona Wineries Begin?

Wine making in Sedona and the Verde Valley actually dates back to the late 17th century when Franciscan missionaries planted the first vineyards in Arizona. The dry, arid environment, plenty of sunshine, valley weather, and the Verde River makes for great grape growth.

What's the Best Way to Visit the Wineries?

Obviously, you'll want a Designated Driver with you in order to fully enjoy a day in Sedona's Wine Country. But fortunately, if you don't have one, there are plenty of Sedona wine tour companies that offer group and private wine tours or shuttles from Sedona to the different wineries. Another unique and fantastic way to have a great day of wine tasting is to do Verde Valley Adventures's Water to Wine Tour where you float the friendly Verde River on a kayak and stop at vineyards along the way.

5 Sedona Wineries Every Wine Tasting Lover Should Visit

Last Modified: November 30, 2023 //  by  Anda //   Leave a Comment

Sedona has for long been our favorite tourist destination in Arizona, but we never considered it a wine destination as well. In fact, we had no idea there were so many wineries around Sedona. Leave alone the fact that some them may even rival the wineries in Napa Valley !

Image depicting the road to Sedona wineries

Every time we visited Sedona it was either for its ancient Indian dwellings , the ghost town of Jerome , or the many scenic trails that make this region so famous. Until one day when we received an invitation to do some wine tasting in Sedona. As it appears, this region has recently become a wine destination in its own right, with wineries that are already making waves in the world of winemaking.

Table of Contents

The Surprising Truth About Sedona’s Winemaking Business

What you should know about sedona wineries, 1. arizona stronghold, 2. cove mesa winery, 3. château tumbleweed winery, 4. alcantara vineyard, 5. merkin vineyard, what is the arizona wine trail passport, how many sedona wineries can you visit in one day, you may also like:.

The heat-pounded desert of Arizona may seem like the least likely place for wine making. And yet, some parts of the state enjoy microclimates that are very similar to the wine making regions of France and Italy. Such is the case of the Verde Valley, where Sedona is located. Here, the sunny days and cool nights combined with a soil that is both volcanic and rich in limestone create perfect conditions for growing premium quality grapes.

image depicting a vineyard in Arizona

This exceptional climate also contributes to the terroir of the Verde Valley wines, which are not too sweet and not too dry. Because the quality of the wines in this region is so good, Sedona is becoming a mecca for food and wine tasting, luring visitors from all over the country.

Sedona wineries and wine tasting rooms are barely 30 years old, but wine making is not. Records indicate that in the 17th century the Franciscan missionaries planted the first vineyards in Verde Valley region and began producing wine.

Today, there are a few winemakers near Sedona that can brag about producing some fantastic wines. These are small producers that have a true passion for winemaking.

Since they don’t have a big production, their wines are only distributed to a few Arizona restaurants, or sold locally. Therefore, if you find a wine that you like, buy it right there as you may not find it in stores. Each winery has its own unique personality and distinct wines, so they are all worth visiting.

Most wineries are an easy, half-hour drive southwest of Sedona, in Cottonwood. This picturesque small town with funky souvenir shops and art galleries will surely capture your heart!

5 Sedona Wineries to Visit Along the Verde Valley Wine Trail

If you have more than one day in Sedona and want to do some wine tasting, here are some wineries and cellars that we believe deliver a good experience:

Established in 2007, Arizona Stronghold is the largest winery in the Verde Valley as well as in Arizona. Because it’s a bigger winery, their wines are available in wine shops across the state. The winery has two tasting rooms: one in Old Town Cottonwood, next to Sedona, and one in Old Town Scottsdale.

They specialize in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Malvasia Bianco. However, in their taste rooms you’ll find a wide variety of wines, from Malbec and Sangiovese, to Mourvedre and Petite Sirah.

We visited the winery’s taste room in Old Town Cottonwood, which is near Sedona. The location is quirky and vibrant, with a very relaxed atmosphere and a great service. The wines are very distinct and their tapas are tasty and reasonably priced. Great place for awesome artwork as well. They have an amazing selection of wines, so we bought a couple of bottles to take home with us.

The winery’s tasting room is located in Cottonwood and is open Monday to Sunday, between noon and 8:00 PM.

Cove Mesa winery is the new “kid” on the block – a small family owned and operated winery. Its owners – Emil and Cindy Molin – emerged into Arizona’s wine scene in 2019, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “ It was our lifelong dream to own a vineyard ” Molin told us, as we enjoyed a custom tasting. He studied wine and visited wine regions around the world for several decades before deciding to invest almost everything he had in the vineyards of the Verde Valley.

Although relatively new, Cove Mesa’s sophisticated collection of wines attracts wine lovers from Sedona and beyond, so I strongly encourage you to visit it if you are in town.

The winery’s tasting room is located in Cornville. Opening hours are Monday to Sunday, from noon to 6:00 PM.

Like most wineries on the Verde Valley Wine Trail, Château Tumbleweed started as a small enterprise. In 2011, two couples with a passion for winemaking decided to bring together their 30 years of combined experience and create their own winery.

Today, the wines produced at the Château Tumbleweed are sold in many stores and restaurants all throughout Arizona. They also ship to other states like California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Texas, Nevada and Oregon.

In addition to the cozy tasting room, the winery also has a small patio from where you can enjoy some wonderful Arizona sunsets over Sedona, while sipping a delicious wine. And if you just want to nibble, a cheese plate is a great complement to your wine tasting.

Château Tumbleweed winery is located in the heart of Camp Verde, about 35 miles away from Sedona. Opening hours are Monday through Sunday, from noon to 7:00 PM. Reservations are recommended as the tasting room is very popular among the locals.

Alcantara is a family-owned winery that began in 2004. They have one of the largest vineyards in Arizona, encompassing 87 acres and 13,000 vines.

The winery specializes in rosé wines with aromas of lychee, cherry blossom, pomegranate, watermelon and honeysuckle. Their red wine variety is also very diverse, including Pinot Noir, Merlot, Zinfandel and the interesting Bella Dolce with aromas of Coca Cola, chocolate covered cherry, and juicy plum.

The winery is located just 25 miles away from Sedona, in a very peaceful place, surrounded by vineyards, and the Verde River. They have a very nice facility, with both indoor and outdoor seating for wine tasting and food.

Alcantara Vineyards and Winery is open Monday – Sunday 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM. On Fridays & Saturdays at 11:30 AM, they offer vineyard tours. If you plan to tour the vineyard we recommend booking a tour in advance.

Merkin Vineyard is famous all throughout Arizona not only for being owned by an award-winning song writer –Maynard James Keenan– but also for its great wines. Keenan started making wine in the mid 2000s. All his wines are produced with grapes from his vineyards in the Verde Valley and Willcox, AZ.

Merkin Tasting Room and Osteria in Sedona

The winery has a few tasting rooms in Arizona, but perhaps the most famous is the one in Cottonwood, near Sedona. Merkin Taste Room and Osteria opened in 2016 in a renovated one-story building in the Old Town. The room is quite spacious, including a bar, four seating booths, a community table, and several smaller tables.

They make excellent Italian style wine and also serve delicious food, in case you want to eat here. The menu has a variety of dishes that pair up very well with the wines, like bruschetta, lasagna cupcakes, antipasti and pastas.

How to Visit the Sedona Wineries

Drinking and driving is never a good idea, especially around Sedona’s curvy mountain roads. Although these wineries are in very close in proximity to each other, it’s always better to have a designated driver in you are planning to go wine tasting.

If you’re concerned about drinking and driving, there are several companies that offer tours to the wineries around Sedona. These companies pick up guests anywhere in Sedona and drive them to the famous Verde Valley vineyards. Depending on your budget, you can travel by limo, jeep and even by kayak.

Shuttle taking people to the Sedona wineries

There are also private tours that offer flexible start times. You can enjoy the tour at your pace, never rushing you along the way. One of the nicest ones is Sightseeing Railroad Tour of Verde Canyon.

If you are interested in visiting more wineries in Sedona, you can check the map of the Verde Valley Wine Trail here.

The Arizona Wine Trail Passport is a mobile passport that features the six regions in the state with wine tasting rooms. The passport is free and will be instantly delivered to your phone via text or email and is ready to use immediately. There is no app to download. The passport gives you discounts and has an interactive map which is very useful if you plan to visit the wineries in Sedona.

Many of the wineries on this list participate in this program. When visiting a participating winery, remember to present your phone passport to one of the staff members in order to redeem the available discounts. If you are interested, you can sign up for the Arizona Wine Trail Passport here .

In addition to the discounts offered by each winery, if you visit at least one tasting room in three of the six regions in Arizona, you’ll automatically be entered to win a wine themed gift. These gifts may be anything from an Arizona t-shirt, a tote, Arizona logo wine glasses (set of 4), or a logo wine stopper.)

If you’d like to be entered to win an annual prize from the Arizona Office of Tourism, be sure to check-in to each tasting room you visit.

Wine tasting is a fun a relaxing activity. To really enjoy it, you should plan on visiting no more than three wineries in a day. Most of the wineries in Sedona are open for tasting between 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM. and each tasting takes at least an hour (or more if you are touring the cellars and the vineyards).

image depicting a wine tasting room

Also, wine tasting rooms usually include some basic wine education, which will enhance your experience but also extend your visit. Some wineries may feature a food pairing option as well. Or have special events, like concerts or live music. This usually happens in the summertime and on weekends.

Another important thing to consider when planning your tasting is whether you are planning to spit the wine or drink it. Most people (with the exception of a few professional wine tasters) like to drink the wine they are tasting. So in this case you’ll get very drunk if you visit more than 3 wineries in a day.

If however you are visiting Sedona with the intent of purchasing some wine and plan to spit after each taste, then you can probably visit even 7-8 wineries in a day.

Where to Stay and Eat in Sedona

Sedona is a very expensive town, so if you are planning to spend the night here be prepared to spend top dollars on lodging. We’ve been in Sedona many times over the years and stayed at different hotels. The two that found to have best value were Arabella Hotel , and  Bell Rock Inn .

Arabella Hotel

Arabella is one of Sedona’s high-end hotels that provides spacious rooms with balconies, park-like grounds, a swimming pool, a dog run area, and an on-site restaurant. The hotel serves a delightful breakfast. You can choose to eat in the dining room, or outside on the patio that faces the pool area.

Room at Arabella Hotel in Sedona

But the most appealing feature for us was the 10 minute trail behind the hotel. The trail leads to a high plateau overseeing the gorgeous red-rock formations around Sedona. Guests can walk up and down the trail both during the day and at night, when the trail is nicely illuminated by lamps.

The vista point is equipped with chairs, so at night you can sit comfortably and watch the stars shining up above.

Bell Rock Inn

Bell Rock Inn is a very nice property located in the foothills of Sedona, just outside the busy city center. The resort is just a short distance away from numerous hiking trails. Rooms have fire places and air-conditioning.

Hotel Room in Sedona

The hotel features suites with sitting areas and kitchenettes, a swimming pool and a beautiful garden. Whether you’re looking for adventure in Arizona’s backcountry or searching for a relaxing retreat, Bell Rock Inn’s spacious accommodations will keep you comfortable year-round.

If you are traveling on a budget and need more affordable accommodations, there is a good selection of Airbnbs in Sedona  worth checking out.

Stagecoach Restaurant in Sedona

Stagecoach was rated Sedona’s best restaurant for handcut steaks, craft cocktails and live music. Their menu includes delicacies like Pulled Pork Egg Roll, Scottish Salmon, Bison Short Ribs, and Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie.

Stagecoach restaurant food

From the outside, the restaurant looks a little like a cowboy-style saloon, but the interior is very upscale and modern, with beautiful lighting and a central bar. We had some artichoke spinach dip, portobello mushroom fries, smoked baby back ribs, and a filet mignon. Both food and service were excellent!

Molé Fine Cuisine of Mexico

As the name reflects it, Molé is one of Sedona’s finest Mexican restaurants. The restaurant is located on the grounds of the Arabella Hotel. With its high ceilings and large tables, the restaurant’s dining room gives you a sense of space that you won’t have in many restaurants.

Molé restaurant dining room

When it’s warm outside, you can dine on the patio and enjoy the wonderful views of the Sedona sunsets.

food at Molé restaurant in Sedona

The food here is out-of-this-world amazing, made from scratch daily. You can taste delicacies such as Guaca-crab “jaracho ” with diced mango, Colorado lamb shank with chile molé and minted cream, or Molé con Pollo made from 32 ingredients.

Wine Tours of Sedona

VISION STATEMENT

To nurture and foster community through my personal and professional relationships with other small, local Arizona businesses. In sharing my greatest passion life, nature and it’s majestic beauty, incredible wine, delicious food, and building personal relationships, I don’t just offer you a tour but rather an experience. For me, it is about sharing what I am most passionate about, and that is all things Arizona. Sharing this passion while being able to support the local economy and provide extraordinary tour experiences is what drives me to do what I do.

Wine Tours of Sedona did not happen overnight. Many years ago, 2004 to be exact, Sedona Hiking Adventures was in the formation stage. With the help of long-time friends, Adam Wayne and Robin Blakey, I expanded my love of hiking into a very successful business.

Before the business was named Sedona Hiking Adventures, the original name was Secret Mountain Adventure Sports Headquarters, SMASH Tours for short, that my friend, Adam, and his partners were in the process of starting. Due to circumstances, SMASH Tours never came to be, though Sedona Hiking Adventures was born out of that original idea.

I made a crucial decision, one that would change my life forever – Sedona Hiking Adventures would be the foundation and the beginning for my own tour company, one that would specialize in hiking tours, my passion and expertise of Sedona. I sincerely thank both Adam and Robin for all their help and support since I started my tour company.

By 2004, I had only lived in Sedona for 3 years. It was at that time that I realized what I wanted to do with my life. I had heard the age-old advise that you should do what you love. I love to hike, and I am totally passionate about the red rocks. It was at that pivotal moment that Sedona Hiking Adventures was formed.

I guided people around Sedona. I am an environmentalist and avid recycler, so I shared those ideals with my clients. I customized hiking tours, making them uniquely personal.

My “adventure” led me to create tours for wine lovers. A request came from a client, asking for more than a hike – a tour to one of the vineyards in the area. I was more than obliged to customize this special tour for them.

My first and foremost concern is my clients’ enjoyment on all my tours. Whatever I can do to make you happy, I will do. Hiking was only part of the adventure. Now, wine tours are one of my specialties. It’s an experience that we share together. I interact with you and your family/friends. I strive for excellence on all my tours.

I live, work, and play in Sedona and the Verde Valley. I know all about the rocks, the geology, flora, fauna, and natural history, and also local vineyards and wine.

Since starting wine tours of Sedona, my own appreciation and fondness for Arizona wines has increased dramatically. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you.

There are all sorts of tours in Sedona. You can pick the one that suits you best. If you are looking for something a little more personal, something totally private, then Wine Tours of Sedona is just right for you. As each person is unique, so are all of our tours. I would be happy and delighted to customize an adventure to meet your precise criteria.

Now you know a little about how Wine Tours of Sedona came to be. If you have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We look forward to meeting new clients, friends and those who like to travel the less traveled path on a tour as unique as Wine Tours of Sedona itself. This is one tour you do not want to miss!

About Jim Reich

Jim Reich, is the company founder and lead guide. Born on the east coast, Jim spent his childhood exploring suburbia (the suburbs of New York City), which at the time was all there was available to explore. Still, he was out every chance he got trying to get closer to nature, to be just among the trees and away from the pavement.

Back before mountain bikes were even on the market, Jim was biking through creeks and rivers on dirt trails with his good old three-speed bicycle. This was the beginning of what grand explorations would lie ahead.

Jim first came to Arizona on a family trip in 1982 and he loved every minute of it. It was then that he had his first taste of the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, and the four corners region. Upon graduating high school in 1988, Jim knew he wanted to go west, and Arizona was his top choice. Northern Arizona University and Flagstaff became his home almost immediately. It was among the San Francisco Peaks that Jim first learned how to mountain bike the epic single-track trails that scattered the area. Hiking and camping too soon became frequent activities. It wasn’t before long that Jim’s major changed from pre-law to photography. The logic was that photography would allow him to spend more time outside which is where he wanted to be.

In 2004, Jim founded Sedona Hiking Adventures. After spending nearly 5 years in Flagstaff and moving back and forth between the east coast and Arizona, Jim finally made Sedona his permanent home in 2001. Nearly 3 years after moving to Sedona, Sedona Hiking Adventures was born. From 2001 to 2003, Jim spent every spare moment hiking, swimming, and camping all throughout the Sedona and Flagstaff areas. Sedona Hiking Adventures became Sedona Red Rock Adventures after Jim continued to discover all that Northern Arizona had to offer. He felt “hiking” was too limiting to what the region had to offer, and wanted to share all of the adventures and joys that could be had.

Since moving to Sedona, Jim also starting to learn more about the area by reading books about Sedona, local history, plant life, animals, geology, and the native people of this region. Today, Jim still spends a great deal of his spare time learning new things about the Sedona area by reading various publications and talking to other guides knowledgeable in local facts.

It was with this passion for the magic of the red rocks and for simply hiking that makes Jim smile every time he is on the trail, whether it is on a guided hike or simply with friends. Today, Jim spends 8 days a week on the trails and loves to share his enthusiasm about Sedona with clients from across the US and across the globe.

As our planet is evolving, so is business. In 2007, Jim discovered the wines of the northern Arizona and began offering wine tours. With this evolution, wine tours is now his primary focus. First offering wine tours to Echo Canyon Vineyard, he now goes to everywhere in the Verde Valley, and wine has became his passion. If you look in his personal wine cellar, you will only find Arizona wines. Allow him to share this passion with you.

A personal note from Jim:

About Deborah Williams

winery tour sedona

Deborah discovered yoga in her early 20s and has been practicing and learning ever since, continuing to be amazed at the benefits she’s received and has seen in others.

Over these many years, she has experienced numerous styles of yoga, including Hatha, Bikram, Vinyasa Flow, Yin Yoga, Buti, Yoga Nidra, and Kundalini, and her teaching draws from these various sources.

Deborah had been a full-time elementary teacher at both Montessori and Waldorf Schools, with a yoga practice on the side as a means for health and wellness. Attending the hot yoga studios in Sedona and Cottonwood, she was grateful to have a regular practice. After many years, she shifted out of full-time elementary teaching, and around that same time, her local studio offered its first 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification.

It became apparent that the moment had come to deepen her practice and prepare to become a yoga teacher.

Since the entirety of yoga is much more than simply the practice of the physical poses, she loves introducing the 8 limbs of yoga to others and includes pranayama (breathwork) and meditative practices in her classes.

She welcomes all students, at all levels of experience, and offers modifications and props for comfort and ease. She believes that yoga is primarily about aligning more deeply with the inner self and discovering more about the mind-body-spirit-breath connection. With her heart-centered guidance, she strives to help practitioners find inner peace, focus, greater well-being, and transformation.

Deborah has enjoyed incorporating yoga into her elementary classes with children in the past. She currently teaches at the Sanctuary at Sedona, which is a holistic rehabilitation center, and at the Cottonwood Hot Yoga studio. She is now a certified paddle board yoga instructor through the SUP Yoga Center, and also owns and operates her own Floating Yoga business at the convergence of the Verde River and Oak Creek.

We go everywhere in the Verde Valley and Northern Arizona .

We have been providing wine tours longer than any other tour company in Sedona. Our longevity speaks for itself. We encourage you to check out our reviews on Google business.

We pride ourselves on how we operate our business – with integrity, morality and ethics. What we say is what you get, there are no hidden costs or variations from your personalized itinerary. As the owner, I take this very seriously. I want you to have the best experience possible. Need recommendations? Just let us know.

Your tour is personalized specifically for you. Have a favorite winery? We will customize your tour for the wineries and tasting rooms that you are interested in. Not sure where you want to go? We will recommend locations that meet your palette. We are completely flexible. Our tours cater to you and are designed around your interests.

How does this differ from other wine tour companies? We do not offer large group tours where you are placed with people you do not know, and that may not have the same interests as you.

We feel that your interaction with your guide is what makes our tours awesome. Unlike other tour companies who simply pick you up and drop you off at each location, our guides are with you for the entire duration of your tour to ensure that you are getting the most out of your experience.

Our tours are conducted in the comfort of fully enclosed passenger vehicles, which are climate controlled for maximum comfort. This is quite different than other tour companies, who use open-air Jeeps, exposing you to the climate and elements.

Need a ride to a restaurant? We offer transportation to any Northern Arizona restaurant, so that you get the most out of your experience with us. No worries about who is going to drive after your wine tour.

Want a unique dining experience? We even offer in-house gourmet chef services, who can prepare an incredible meal just for you while you are on your tour!

Vegan, gluten-free, or diet restrictions? We offer several food options on all of our tours, and we are not talking a basic deli sandwich either. We cater to your food choices to meet your diet and wishes, whether it is an amazing hamburger, incredible vegetarian food, or a 4-course gourmet picnic – we include the best, most delicious food for your party.

What does it mean to be “owner-operated?” I can, and will, do anything to earn your business. This isn’t just my job, it is something I truly enjoy doing. It’s not just about a tour – it’s about being a small business that supports other small businesses just like my own – Local First Arizona. I want to share my knowledge of Arizona wines, micro-brews, raw chocolates and sights with you. No matter what your budget may be, we can work with you on price. You will receive the best value for your money.

Complimentary digital photos – We take photos for you on all of our tours. Relax, sit back and enjoy your time, while we make sure to capture it all for you to relive again when you return home. This is something that none of the area tour companies provide.

Why we beat our competition

The activity and experience we offer is by far superior to other wine tour companies.

We provide comprehensive wine tours with experienced wine guides. We stay with our clients to provide a continuous level of service. You could pay less elsewhere for a quasi-guide, but they would only drive you from place to place like a taxi service.

We have enclosed, climate-controlled vehicles, unlike the open air Jeeps where you would be subjected to the extreme heat, wind, dust and weather.

We provide complimentary digital photos on all of our tours. No other tour company offers this.

We are owner-operated – The owner/guide has a higher vested interest in the quality of the tour, as opposed to an employee for a big tour company.

You get what you pay for – You could shop around for the best price, but is it the best value for your money? For a small fraction more than the big tour companies’ prices, you will receive your own customized personal tour that fits all of your interests, giving you the ultimate experience well worth the price.

Personalized attention – Our professional guides are at your service for the entire duration of your tour, unlike other tour companies who drop their clients off at the vineyards. We create the ideal experience specifically for you.

Quality food – We meet your dietary needs, offering gourmet and specialized foods, not the standard ordinary food offered by others.

Variety of wineries and cities – Most tour companies only offer limited wineries and cities to their clients, leaving them without options in large tours. We service all of Northern Arizona, a large variety of wineries, and if you wish to stay longer at any particular place, we will accommodate you.

Four bottles of wine from Sedona wineries along the Verde Valley Wine Trail

Sedona, Arizona is home to the Verde Valley Wine Trail which offers visitors a unique experience. It’s a self-guided wine trail featuring some of the best Sedona wineries including Coronado Vineyards, Bodega Pierce, Chateau Tumbleweed, Merkin Vineyards and DA Ranch.

In this guide, we’re going to show exactly where you can find the best vineyards in Sedona.

Our Sedona Wineries Experience

Man enjoying a glass of red wine on the verde valley wine trail

We spent eight days exploring Sedona and the surrounding area in December 2021. Prior to our visit, we didn’t know Sedona was such a hot spot for wine grown by the proud local communities. Read more  about us .

After a day of hiking, we would spend the afternoon at one of the best vineyards in Sedona. If you are a lover of vino, the Verde Valley Wine trail is an unmissable addition to your perfect Sedona itinerary because most of these wineries are only a short drive from town.

What Is The Verde Valley Wine Trail?

Like us, you may be surprised to learn the Verde Valley is one of Arizona’s three wine-growing regions which have been officially designated as American Viticultural Areas (AVA).

While the two largest AVA’s are located in southern Arizona, near the cities of Sonoita and Wilcox, the Verde Valley is the crown jewel in northern Arizona .

Stretching between the towns of Jerome, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Cornville and Sedona, this wine trail offers many tasting rooms nestled within red rock country.

To help you figure out which wineries along the Verde Valley Wine Trail would best suit you, we have listed each winery based on location with a short description of what you can expect.

Verde Valle Wine Passport

But before hitting the Verde Valley Wine Trail, be sure to download your wine passport on the official website here for special offers and details about local activities.

Don’t miss the chance to be entered into the quarterly or yearly drawing by visiting 10 stops along the Verde Valley Wine Trail. Just get your wine passport stamped and mail it back!

Travel Tip : Only some of the Verde Valley wineries require reservations. We recommend you check the official winery website or call ahead to verify if reservations are required before visiting.

Seasonal Events On The Verde Valley Wine Trail

A wooden building with numerous Christmas decorations by the entrance

We certainly warmed our bellies with delicious wines during our visit to Sedona in December . But no matter the season, there is always something going on along the Verde Valley Wine Trail. Check out some of the seasonal events below:

  • Spring – Verde Valley Wine Fest, Camp Verde Pecan & Wine Fest, Cottonwood Vintage Half Marathon and Emerging Wine Makers Competition
  • Summer – Fantastic 4th of July
  • Fall – Sedona Winefest, Walkin’ On Main, VIP Chocolate Walk and Wine & Dine In The Vines
  • Winter – Sedona International Film Festival

Sedona’s best wineries are open year round , which means you can cool down in summer or warm up in winter. Spring and fall have the most comfortable temperatures in the area, but wineries will be at their busiest.

In Conclusion

The Verde Valley Wine Trail is the best kept secret when it comes to discovering wineries near Sedona. It includes numerous vineyards showcasing tasting rooms, small bistros and guided tours. We like that you can visit these wineries as a self-guided tour or you can book a tour if you want someone else to do the driving.

Are the wineries in Sedona worth it ?

Yes, the Sedona wineries are worth visiting because this is a very popular wine region in northern Arizona which some say rivals Napa Valley. We think the wineries are one of the best things to do in Sedona .

Our favorite wineries include DA Ranch , Chateau Tumbleweed and Alcantara Vineyards . But you can’t really go wrong at any of the wineries along the Verde Valley Wine Trail. Don’t forget to enjoy a delicious meal at Up The Creek Wine Bistro too.
