Review of Michele Gallo Tour Guide - Excellent!!
My wife and I visited Sicily in May and hired Michele for two half day tours - one in Agrigento and one in Sciacca. In both instances Michele provided great context, local flavor, and historical perspective, The first was a visit to Valle dei Templi - one of the best preserved Greek archeological sites in the world! Michele's knowledge of the site made his presence invaluable! The second tour was of Sciacca, the ancestral home of my great grandfather. Not only did Michele show us around this beautiful seaport town, he accompanied us to the Municipio where we spent time digging through old records to uncover more information about my family roots. It was truly a great experience which would not have been the same without Michele's expertise. We would highly recommend Michele on your next tour of Sicily!
The company arranged for a wonderful driver to take us to 2 wineries on Mt Etna, and the visit at each winery was wonderful. However, communication with the company/scheduling was problematic as they did not respond regularly to emails. In addition, although we had been told there would be 3 wineries, since our tastings took place on a Sunday, many places were closed and only 2 tastings could be arranged - yet the same price was charged for the driver despite the day wrapping up about 2 hours earlier than we had understood. So, overall our complaint is re: communication with the company, not the actual service.
Thank you for taking the time to review our tour . We are glad that you found our driver and the visit to each winery wonderful. We exchanged 18 emails. Although at the beginning you wrote that you were going to arrange your own visits when you asked for our help we were able to arrange the 3 wineries. On the way to the third one we learned that there was a big group there. We offered to take you to a honey farm and you accepted and seemed to have enjoyed the visit. We also offered to show you more of the volcano. It is true that the tour ended a little bit earlier (45 minutes) because of less traffic on Sundays.
We booked a one day tour of the filming locations of the Inspector Montalbano series and had a wonderful experience. Our guide, Luca, was firstly a good, safe driver (sometimes a worry in Italy), and the car was immaculate. Since he both lives in Noto, and had appeared in some episodes of the series he had a very complete knowledge of both the area and the shoot locations, and took us to all the sites we wanted to see plus some surprises !. Together with visits to a number of wonderful Baroque buildings this all made for a great day. We would highly recommend this company.
We did a tour of the Valley of the Temples with Michele Gallo who made the area come alive for us. This morning tour was definitely a highlight of our time in Sicily. Michele is so knowledgeable and interesting and we were sorry when we needed to say goodbye. Plus he recommended a restaurant to us where we had the best pizza of our time in Sicily.
Buongiono Michele, We just want to express our great appreciation to Tommy and Angelo for their tremendous efforts in locating my fathers birthplace and family friends. They took us up the winding roads from Taormina to Tripi, a feat that Angelo did extremely well. Tommy was a great interpreter, especially with only limited information from old photographs. They managed to find my fathers birthplace in Casale and tried to locate the gravestones of my grandmother and father, which unfortunately, we could not find. It was like living in a mystery drama with two keen detectives. We just want to say "Multo Grazie" to Tommy, Angelo, and you for making this trip a very worthwhile and memorable experience. Again, Multo Grazie and Ciao, Carmela Castagnolo e la familia
My wife and I were scheduled for a 6-night Mediterranean cruise sailing out of Messina, Sicily in early September. We decided to visit Sicily for a few days before the cruise since our families are Sicilian. I found Sicily TravelNet on Tripadvisor and also noted it was mentioned in Frommer's Sicily. I contacted Sicily TravelNet by email regarding setting up a Roots Tour for my wife and me. Michele Gallo quickly responded with an itinerary and a recommendation for an excellent B&B in Agrigento. The tour of Sicily was the highlight of our trip. Each day were picked up on time. Mr. Gallo was our first guide. He is knowledgeable, friendly and speaks perfect English. He navigated the bureaucracy at the town halls with charm and tenacity, which allowed us to obtain several birth records of relatives; we would not have been able to do so without Michele's help. We had Salvatore as a driver/guide the following day. He lives in the town where my wife's family is from, so he knew all of the sites. He even introduced us to the sindaco (mayor) of the town (while there we determined that she is related to the mayor). The sindaco was very friendly and proud of his town. Finally we had Andrea as driver and Tommy as guide for a trip to Mt. Etna and Taormina. Andrea was a steady driver and Tommy was helpful to us on the trip. Tommy suggested an excellent restaurant in Taormina and even made the reservations for us; he also went into the hotel with us to assure it was adequate and gave us tips on taking the train to Messina the following day - all above the call of duty. We had a great time in Sicily and it was due to the efforts and planning by Sicily TravelNet and Michele Gallo. He was excellent and the arrangements he made for drivers and guides were first class. I recommend them without hesitation.

Why us ? Michele Gallo has worked with History Channel as a WWII expert in the documentary "Real Mafia Underground" covering the role of Mafia in the allied landing in Sicily ("Husky operation") and has appeared on the BBC "Fast Track" programme.
For his role in designing the definitive Inspector Montalbano Tour he has been interviewed by Radio Rai (Italian National Radio), Radio Uruguay, the Guardian, the EasyJet Inflight magazine and a number of Italian newspapers. He has been lecturing on the Greek colonisation of Sicily and the Western Greeks to numerous study abroad programs, alumni and academic groups.
His tours are recommended by National Geographic Sicily Travel Guide, Rough Guide of Sicily, Lonely Planet, Washington Post, Crest (Centre for Responsible Tourism- Stanford University).
He has just been awarded "Sicily Tour Specialist of the Year 2017" by the Luxury Travel Guide.
One excellent English- speaking guide that we can recommend for the region is Michele Gallo who can organise individual and group itineraries according to the travellers' interests. .

COVETED EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MARISA GALLO
Coveted exclusive interview with Marisa Gallo. She holds a diploma in interior design and architecture from IADE. For over 20 years, Marisa has honed her talent in a constant search for uniqueness and balance . She has successfully created a distinctive style and aesthetic synonymous with timeless elegance and classicism . Together with her, a team of designers are in charge of carrying out all kinds of interior design projects. The team specialises in the creation of residential and commercial spaces , both in Spain and Latin America .
What Marisa loves the most about her work is the possibility of using always her creativity . For the designer is very important to face new challenges, create different projects and have, as a final result, grateful clients. Creating the “wow” effect on her clients gives her the best feeling ever! The most challenging time in her career was when she and her team started to work in Latin America and the rest countries of the world. “It was new and a little bit complicated to manage at first, but we found it a very enriching experience that helped us keep growing and letting the world get to know us. We overcame the situation with hard work and positivism.” – explain the designer.
Marisa pretty much achieved everything she aimed. “I am living my dream working as an interior designer and I have a family that loves me, and it is proud of me. What else would I want?” – she said. Her sweet dream for life is to keep enjoying her work and to have the chance to design a boutique hotel. What makes her feel fulfilled professionally is making her clients happy after delivering the work and also, that her passion, effort and work is valued .
The relationship with her audience is normal. “I can’t dedicate it as much time as I would like to as I am always busy working. However, I always try to post photos on our Instagram account so my followers can catch up with our projects.” – explained the designer. At the moment, Marisa and her team are working in Marbella Design, a fair in the south of Spain. “We are very excited to present this project, for which, my inspiration was the Mediterranean style.” – she said. From Marisa’s point of view, what is trending now are the organic forms, sustainable materials, and functional spaces but keeping the design and the luxury.
Marisa Gallo ‘s type of client is wide. They mostly do residential projects and restaurants , so their clients have different styles, but they always have a taste for sensibility, art, design, creativity and most importantly, the need to be in beautiful spaces. She is always open to new collaborations because it is a good way to explore new products and grow as an interior designer.
To finalise
“When it comes to craftsmanship, for me, people that have a good process of elaboration and that care about small details are leading the way, always maintaining a good design and a high level of sensibility. But I would say that digital transformation will be the boom in the future. Still, I hope that personalized spaces never get lost because a machine can never substitute the sensibility that an interior designer has.”

Design Insider Special Edition: Marisa Gallo on Her Design Journey, Future Projects and Exhibition at Casa Décor Madrid
If you’re a true design lover , we bet Design Insider is already one of your favorite design captions ! Mid-Century Furniture Blog has decided to do a special round of interviews with some of the most amazing interior designers that attended this edition of Casa Décor. For 5 weeks, we’ve been sharing the most interesting conversations with our favorite designers , so don’t miss the last interview of this amazing special edition!
Marisa Gallo needs no introduction. The interior designer has been making waves in the design field, and after presenting her one-of-a-kind exhibition at Casa Décor Madrid , we decided to talk with her to know more about her unique signature style and next projects !
Mid-Century Furniture Blog: Marisa, you are passionate about decoration almost since you started walking, since you changed the furniture from one place to another in your house. What has motivated you to follow this passion for the world of design? What are the main design names that inspire you?
Marisa Gallo: I think that this profession is very vocational, and in which it is necessary to feel what you do. I decided to continue down this path because it is what really made me happy, and what better thing than to be able to work on what you like. In Spain I greatly admire Luis Bustamante, Pascua Ortega, the creativity of Lazaro Rosa-Violan… and I am also very inspired by Kelly Wearslet, for her risky designs.
MCFB: You are known by selecting good quality pieces and many details among the furniture to achieve cozy and homely spaces where life is pleasant and comfortable. How do you manage to combine functionality and aesthetics in your projects?
MG: First of all, we must listen to the client, their needs and once analyzed we must be functional without losing aesthetics. I think that all good projects have to have common sense.
MCFB: Do you think that the pandemic has caused a new perspective people have about their home? Since they spend more time at home, the details that previously went unnoticed now begin to bother .
MG: Absolutely, the pandemic has made us think a lot in all aspects. We give much more value to our home, which is aesthetically better, more comfortable and functional, and solutions to telework are also sought, something that was practically not done before.
MCFB: Besides residential projects, commercial areas are also part of your portfolio. The Flamingo restaurant provides a concept that revolves around a tropical and colorful aesthetic combined with a cosmopolitan atmosphere to transform the space into a place to disconnect from the hectic pace of the city of Madrid. Do you think that the environments and your decoration influence the mood of the people?
MG: Yes, I think that the light and colors of a space greatly influence the state of mind and have to fit in with the client.
MCFB: You also work in Latin America. Does the working method for these projects differ a lot from the one followed for those you carry out in Spain?
MG: The development of the project is the same whether it is in Spain or in any other part of the world. Nowadays communication is very easy. The most “complicated” thing would be to go to see the house, make the measurements and the possible visits to work, since the trips require more time. But it is very interesting to know other ways of living and to be able to develop projects in different countries. The assembly moment is very exciting and we really enjoyed it.
MCFB: What cannot be missing in a space, according to Marisa Gallo?
MG: Good lighting , some vegetation, flowers, objects, art … A good props, in the end the final detail defines the style a lot.
MCFB: What is the trend for next year in interior design?
MG: Sustainable, natural materials and very livable spaces.
MCFB: What is your favorite project?
MG: My favorite project is the one where the client is happy.
MCFB: What would you like to do as an interior designer that you haven’t done yet?
MG: Yes, I would love to be able to make a boutique hotel.
MCFB: Could you tell us a bit about the space you present at Casa Decor Madrid?
MG: Our home decor space this year has been designed for Bang & Olufsen, and the space has revolved around their wonderful product. We have created a living room with different environments where you can enjoy television and sound, a very technological space. Geometric lines are very present, neutral colors, black and white and some brushstrokes of blue. Curved and organic shapes are also on trend and we have incorporated them into our design. In short, we have created a space that invites you to enjoy it.

The main concept of the interior design project revolves around the tropical aesthetic and bright colors combined with a cosmopolitan atmosphere to turn the space into a place to disconnect from the frenetic pace of the city. TOP + 100 INTERIOR DESIGNERS
THE INSPIRATION YOU WERE LOOKING FOR
How did you get involved in the interior design Industry?
I think this job is very vocational for which is necessary to feel everything you do. Since I was a little girl, I kept changing the furniture around my house, always looking for a better look aesthetically.
[BDCK category=3 Keywords=”CH-capuchinsofa”][/BDCK]
How would you describe your work style? Do you have any kind of signatures that help to identify your projects?
My work style starts with the first contact with the space in which I get my first inspiration about the lighting, the materials, and the environment. Once this step is done, we start drawing in the plan and everything that comes next is “easier”. In addition, after talking about their necessities and analyzing the client’s personality, I always ask for a style, colors preference even though it is obvious that if they contact us, it is because our studio fits with their style, but we always adapt to every client’s style.
Some signatures that help identify my projects would be my color range which usually is very neutral, black, and white are a must, and the green that the vegetation brings. About materials, natural stone, and wood. In all my projects I give a lot of importance to the lighting, it is essential that the homes are luminous in order to achieve a good atmosphere that gives a warmer and more welcoming environment thanks to the indirect lighting.
Being in love with our work is always the key to achieving better results. Are you in love with this job? What do you love most about being an interior designer?
Yes, I am in love with my job. What I like most about being an interior designer is creativity, having new challenges, creating different projects, having grateful clients, and creating the “wow” effect.
[BDCK category=3 Keywords=”BB-chair”][/BDCK]
Inspiration
Which major international events do you attend/follow to get the latest novelties?
To follow the latest novelties, I usually attend different fairs in Europe like the Milan or London Fair.
[BDCK category=3 Keywords=”houseofbocadolobonyc”][/BDCK]
How would you describe your personal decorating style?
I don’t have a specific style. I like to extract different things from each of them and create an eclectic style. I consider myself a little classic but adapted to trends
– All artists need some inspiration to work, and interior designers are artists too. So, what or who really inspires you?
In Spain, I admire Luis Bustamante, Pascua Ortega, the creativity of Lazaro Rosa-Violan, and also, I feel very inspired by the risky designs of Kelly Wearlest.
How important is a perfect chemistry between you and your clients to achieve the best results?
The chemistry between the client and me is very important. Fundamentally, to start a project is necessary to know the client and their needs. There is a very phycological work at the beginning and once it is analyzed, inspiration is needed, a lot of it, which comes according to the needs they have marked you.
[BDCK category=3 Keywords=”BB-The Eternel Apartment”][/BDCK]
Choosing the best pieces to compose a project can be the secret to getting the best overall result. Although it seems easy, this is a delicate task and needs full attention on time to execute. Do you have some tips for those who do not know well how to start a challenge like this?
I think that interior designer must have their own style and personality. Clients must find you for your aesthetic. It’s important to differentiate yourself.
[BDCK category=3 Keywords=”CC-our magical rooms”][/BDCK]
What has been your greatest accomplishment as a designer? What goals do you have for the future?
My greatest accomplishment as a designer is making the client happy. I think my projects have their own, classic and timeless style and it’s what certain persons are looking for, so perhaps this is part of my success.
For the future, one of my goals is to have the chance to design a boutique hotel.
Do you have a favorite project or a favorite story about one of your projects?
All projects have something special. Restaurants also give a lot of satisfaction, and they are a big showcase for many people. Exhibitions like Casa Decor or Marbella Design are a big reference for Spanish interior design and can’t be left unmentioned.

Taste of cultures from around the world found in montrose.
By CV Weekly on May 4, 2023 No Comment
By Lori BODNAR
The historic Scout House in Montrose was filled with hundreds of happy Girl Scouts who gathered for the 37 th Girl Scout Tasting Bee on April 23. The Scouts – and ticket buyers – learned about the customs and cultures from around the world through tastes of traditional food.
Thirteen Girl Scout troops represented different countries for the Tasting Bee having made posters, prepared food and wore outfits relating to their chosen country. Over 150 countries are part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGS).
The Tasting Bee booths reflected the countries of China, England, France, Germany, Guatemala, India, Italy, Japan, Scotland, Sweden, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Participating Girl Scout troops ranged from the Daisies (in kindergarten and first grade), Brownies (second-third graders), Juniors (fourth and fifth grade), Cadettes (sixth through eighth grade), Seniors (ninth and tenth graders) and Ambassadors (11 th -12 th graders).
Organizers of the Tasting Bee included Cally Lau, Marisa Gallo and Patti B.
“The Tasting Bee motivates the Girl Scouts to start thinking about travel and awareness of the sisterhood of Girl Guides in different areas,” said Patti B. “Whenever I travel to a new country, I try to meet up with Girl Scouts. There are five World Centers of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.”
The five WAGGS World Centers include Pax Lodge in England, Our Chalet in Switzerland, Our Cabaña in Mexico, Sangam in India, and Kusafiri in Africa. Local MaryJane Craig, a Girl Scout for almost 60 years, has been to four of the World Centers and is part of the Silver Trefoils.
Craig said, “Our chapter of the Silver Trefoils is involved with council, the history and traditions of Girl Scouts; [for example] explaining why we put up three fingers for the Girl Scout promise and law, and the history of our badge. Our membership requirement is 25 years of Girl Scouting. The Silver Trefoils is a great way to continue to stay involved with service and Girl Scouts.”
Troops researched the culture, customs and ethnic food from their chosen country, with some troops having members who may have firsthand knowledge about that culture, such as Scotland.
“I’ve been to Scotland and my husband is Scottish, so our troop thought it would be fun to represent Scotland,” said troop leader Leah Blackley. “Troop 2931 [members have] done the Tasting Bee since they were Daisies so for about eight years. We spent about two-three months planning and preparing for the Tasting Bee. We are serving Scottish shortbread and the traditional haggis (sheep offal).”
The troop also wore tartan clothing and had set up a mini-golf course for Scouts to play, since Scotland invented the game of golf.
Suzie Bodnar, a Cadette in Troop 2931, said she enjoyed learning how to make Scottish shortbread.
“My favorite taste was the shortbread we made,” Bodnar said. “I also liked the Italian meatballs. I had fun hosting our Scotland booth, learning about other countries and trying their tastes, and collecting stamp stickers from each country. I also liked exchanging SWAPS with other scouts.”
SWAPS, or Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere, are small keepsakes that Girl Scouts exchange with one another, serving as a reminder of a fun event. SWAPS are unique and hand-made by the girls in each troop. Most troops had special SWAPS that reflected their country, such as flags crafted from beads or laminated tiny pictures of landmarks from their represented country.
Troop 1601 served English scones and “toad in the hole” (sausages in Yorkshire pudding) at their booth representing England. Erin Blackley, a Girl Scout ambassador of Troop 1601, has been part of Girl Scouts for about nine years.
“We chose England because when we graduate we are traveling to England for our Girl Scout senior trip,” Blackley said. “I attended the Girl Scout Tasting Bee before but this is my first time hosting a booth. I like how we can see different cultures and explore the traditional food at the Tasting Bee.”
Sweden was also represented at the Tasting Bee by Troop 846. Junior Girl Scout Emilia Feinberg started Girl Scouts last year.
“Our troop put different country names in a hat and we picked Sweden,” Feinberg explained. “My mom is from Sweden, so she knows a lot about it. We are serving gingersnaps, which is known as pepparkakor in Sweden. One fun fact about Sweden is that the country has a king and queen. Sweden also celebrates St. Lucy on Dec. 13.
“I like learning about the different cultures and tasting the food at the Tasting Bee. I enjoy earning badges in Girl Scouts and my friends are in the troop.”
“Our troop chose Taiwan. Both of my parents come from Taiwan,” said Cadette Katherine Hsias. “We are serving boba milk and pork balls ( gong wan ). We did the Tasting Bee one time before. I like that we get to eat and learn about a ton of different places at the Tasting Bee. I enjoy making friends and doing activities in Girl Scouts.”
The afternoon culminated with the girls gathering together, holding the flags of their countries. They marched in a Parade of Countries enjoyed by the parents and spectators.
After the march, Christie Crahan, a Juliette Gordon Lowe impersonator (Juliette Gordon Lowe is the founder of Girl Scouts), commended the Scouts for coming together as Scout sisters to learn more about the world.

The L.A. Roller Rink Where the Years Glide By
Moonlight Rollerway has been hosting some of the city’s best skate parties for more than 60 years.
Often, as the night wears on, skaters at Moonlight Rollerway gather in the middle of the floor. The rink manager Adrienne Van Houten says, “You see people helping each other learn different dance moves to different songs.” Credit... Abdi Ibrahim

A companion to T’s 212 series about New York institutions, the 213 column highlights beloved landmarks in and around Los Angeles.
On a dark night in February, east of the 5 Freeway, south of the 134, down the street from the so-called Gentlemen’s Club, glows the blue neon sign: Moonlight Rollerway. These are the industrial hinterlands of Glendale, a tidy enclave in the rambling city-state that is Los Angeles, and here, among plumbing supply warehouses and an Amazon delivery van lot, sits a squat cinder-block building, an unexpected portal.
Under the white overhang, signage abounds: “No In & Out Privileges,” “No Fast Wild or Reckless Skating,” “Be Neat & Clean.” A lengthy passage politely, firmly reminds visitors that risk of accident is inherent in the sport. “If you are not willing to assume that risk,” it reads, “please do not roller-skate here.”
Risk assumed, the 30-some customers ahead of me move steadily up the cement ramp to the box office and flash their tickets for the clerk behind the window. Those who’ve brought their own skates — about half the crowd — present them for inspection (no fiberglass wheels, no micro wheels; they can gouge the floor). Then a door slams behind us and we are somewhere else, in the land of motion.
Nostalgia comes fast, from all directions — the black carpet patterned with fluorescent zigzags, the buzz and trill of a Ms. Pacman game, a whiff of some sugary confection being heated at the snack bar — but most of all from the rink, where, beneath two disco balls, skaters revolve, some gliding, some wobbling, one pressing herself against the red-carpeted wall while Donna Summers asks, “Could it be magic?”
“We want you to walk in and feel like it takes you back to whatever era you remember,” says Adrienne Van Houten, the rink’s manager. “This is my 1973, ’74. For my kids, it’s the ’90s.”
For me, it’s 1983, and I am propelled into a piercingly vivid flashback of a childhood birthday party, skating to Taco’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz.”
For Jack Cardinal, a software developer and rink regular, it’s not about traveling to the past but to the present. “You have no other choice,” he says. “If you have stories going on in your head about work, about money, whatever, all of those will be put on hold for a couple of hours.” Cardinal started coming years ago when his doctor told him to find a form of cardio that he loves.
Dominic Cangelosi bought the rink in 1985. He’d been working there as an organist for nearly 30 years. The building was erected in 1942 for a much different purpose — it was designed as a foundry to manufacture airplane parts during World War II — before it was converted into Harry’s Roller Rink in the 1950s and rechristened the Moonlight Rollerway in 1969 by the then-owners Cliff and Mildred Neschke. When they retired, Cangelosi took the reins, and he’s since ushered the roller way into the pantheon of hallowed Los Angeles institutions, like Musso and Franks, the Bob Baker Marionette Theater and the Apple Pan .
Cangelosi started a Rainbow Night, one of the first L.G.B.T.Q.-themed skate events in the country in 1985, and it’s still one of the busiest times of the week. He hosted artistic skating competitions with teams coming from all over the world, and countless birthday parties. For over 60 years, he accompanied skaters on his electric organ, serenading them with waltzes, polkas, fox trots and cha-chas, but then the pandemic shuttered the roller way in 2020. When it reopened 14 months later, many of the old-timers who’d come for the live music didn’t return. Cangelosi, now in his 90s, retired from the keyboard, but not the rink. When he’s not there in person, he watches the action from live-cam monitors in his home.
We live in the endless scroll of our screens, but here on the floor — two and a quarter inches of maple wood, all tongue-and-groove boards, nary a nail — that’s simply not possible. Another rule: no hoodies. That’s so the floor guards in striped referee jerseys, expertly weaving through the swirling crowd, can make sure people aren’t wearing earbuds. If skaters aren’t listening to the same music, collisions are inevitable.
“We can give you ice packs and call an ambulance,” Van Houten says, but the staff isn’t legally allowed to provide medical assistance.
No one seems to protest the hoodie rule. Everybody is clearly happy in the collective groove — most people are beaming when they bring their skates back to the rental counter.
“That’s because the adrenaline is still going,” Van Houten says with a laugh. “The pain in their quads hasn’t set in.”
