Essential Guide to Miami’s Terminal V – Virgin Voyages Adult Only Cruises

Posted on Published: 05/30/2023

When Virgin Voyages launched their paradigm-changing, adult-only cruise lines several years ago, they started with a single cruise ship – the Scarlet Lady . While they now offer European sailings (on the Valient Lady), the Scarlet Lady still calls PortMiami its home port.

Shortly after launching its first cruise ship, Virgin Voyages opened its own cruise terminal at PortMiami. Terminal V is a Miami-based Arquitectonica-designed building that is perfectly themed to Virgin Voyages. This beautiful new terminal is one of the only LEED Gold-certified buildings and has a clean, mid-century design that is reminiscent of the earlier days of travel.

Terminal V opened in early 2022, and I first sailed on the Scarlet Lady in May of 2022. I later returned for an additional sailing in January of 2023. Both times, I enjoyed the seamless experience of checking in to my sailing.

Essential Guide to Miami’s Terminal V – Virgin Voyages

Location of terminal v and getting to terminal v.

Terminal V is located at 718 N Cruise Blvd, Miami, FL 33132 along Biscayne Bay along the western part of the port. If you choose to visit Bayside Marketplace before your sailing, you may get to see your ship docked. Once you are on board, before you sail away, you’ll also have beautiful views of the Miami coastline.

Parking and Transportation to the Port – Terminal V, Virgin Voyages

When we fly in for a cruise out of Miami, we always arrive the day before. I’ve had enough delayed flights and lost luggage to understand that it’s best to have some extra time built in. Then, I can wake up at my leisure, have a nice breakfast, and then get to the port just in time for my port arrival time.

If you are staying in the local Miami area after your flight, it’s easy to get a rideshare or a cab to the port. Parking is also available and is currently $22 per night for long-term, overnight parking. I wouldn’t recommend renting a car to get to the port, because you’ll have to pay for it to just sit there. But if you are driving, rather than flying, to Miami, it’s a good option.

When you check into your cruise in advance, you’ll be able to select a port arrival time. Virgin Voyages, like most cruise lines, sticks to those specific times. So, you’ll want to plan to arrive at Terminal V at just about the right time because you won’t be able to check in earlier.

Boarding group card with wearable bracelet

Checking in to your cruise

When you arrive at PortMiami, you’ll head directly to Terminal V. Either park your car, or get out of your ride share. Once you are at the entrance, you’ll be able to leave your bags with the cruise terminal porters if you’d like to check your baggage.

Unlike other cruise lines, you won’t receive luggage tags in advance of your Virgin Voyages cruise. So it’s a good idea to have your stateroom number ready to provide to the porter. They will write the luggage tags for you. The porters aren’t cruise line employees and do accept tips.

Terminal V does start accepting luggage at 9 am, although they prefer that you drop off bags on time. But it’s a good option to have in case you arrive early and want to explore a bit. There’s a shuttle to nearby Bayside Marketplace from the terminal.

Check-in for your cruise ship typically starts at 2 pm but you should arrive at your assigned time. This is later than most cruise lines, but this is because Virgin Voyages offers a later checkout time.

If you are a rockstar level on Virgin Voyages, look for the Rockstar VIP entrance, which also has a separate lounge area to enjoy. Otherwise, you’ll look for a sign with your port arrival time. There are separate lines for each time, and they are handled in order.

After you enter the terminal, you’ll be directed upstairs where you’ll go to officially check-in. Note that you won’t receive anything in the mail in advance, so this is where you’ll receive your wearable band and any necessary paperwork.

Keep in mind that you will need to go through security. There are some prohibited items that will be confiscated and held if you bring them to the terminal. You can see the list on their website here . It’s always easiest to just leave those items at home so you don’t have to worry about them.

After checking in, you’ll be given a boarding group number. You will take this number, and then wait in the lounge until it’s called. Once you are able to board the ship, you can go directly to your room, which should be ready.

Exiting Terminal V – Virgin Voyages

Don’t remove the luggage tag from your bag. When it’s time to disembark, you’ll use that same tag. For short sailings, many people choose to just carry off their bag, but you can also utilize their luggage service.

Once you exit the ship and enter the cruise terminal, you’ll find your bags under a sign, organized by deck number. Then, you can take your bag and go through customs. After you are all set, you can either go to the parking garage or the pickup area for your rideshare or cab.

Where to Stay Near PortMiami

Looking for a hotel? We’ve enjoyed our stays at the Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay , just a short drive from the port. We’ve also enjoyed stays at the Ritz Carlton South Beach and the Marriott Vacation Club Pulse South Beach .

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, long-term, overnight parking is offered at $22 per day.

Check-in usually begins at 2 pm, but you’ll be assigned a time that you are required to adhere to.

The port is about 8 miles from the Miami Airport. However, the Fort Lauderdale Airport is also nearby.

What size are the Virgin luggage tags?

Jodi Grundig

Tuesday 21st of November 2023

They don't send you tags. Instead, a porter will write up a tag for you at the port. I'm not sure of the size, they may vary.

Virgin Voyages Officially Opens Terminal V at PortMiami

virgin voyage port miami

Virgin Voyages has officially taken up permanent residency at PortMiami with the opening of their stylish, state-of-the-art new Terminal V. To celebrate this milestone for the new cruise line, Sir Richard Branson, joined by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Virgin Voyages’ CEO Tom McAlpin, made a splash with a memorable ribbon cutting ceremony marked by mermaid aerialists and a grand entrance via Virgin branded electric Moke vehicles.

Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group said:

“Coming to this beautiful new terminal and seeing Scarlet Lady in her home port here in Miami has been such an incredible experience. The team at Virgin Voyages has created a stunning building that delivers on our commitment to being better stewards of the earth with its LEED Gold Certification,”

Terminal V, an impressive three-story building on the northwestern corner of PortMiami, offers a unique perspective for cruise passengers with unobstructed skyline views of Biscayne Bay, downtown and Edgewater. Even the terminal’s street address of 718 N Cruise Blvd. is unique as it celebrates Sir Richard Branson’s birthday on July 18.

Virgin Voyages’ CEO, Tom McAlpin said:

“We’ve always strived to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, and Terminal V gives us greater opportunity to elevate the Sailor experience from the moment you see the AHOY sign to the time you disembark. Scarlet Lady deserves a home as beautiful as she is, and we cannot wait for our Sailors to begin their voyage at Terminal V,”

The geometric design, a palm grove where land meets sea, was inspired by Miami’s iconic palm trees and the area’s historical origins (formerly used for harvesting coconuts). The concept was developed by the award-winning, global architecture and landscape firm Arquitectonica and built from the ground up by Suffolk Construction. Terminal V’s rooftop resembles the edges of a palm canopy with angular cutouts that allow natural light to stream through. Enveloped by more than 1,000 palm trees, Terminal V features soaring floor-to-ceiling windows, natural skylights, and lush indoor landscaping that offers Sailors both a grand and warm welcome on their voyage.

Further inspired by the brand’s design ethos of  the “Modern Romance of Sailing,” Terminal V’s interiors give a nod to mid-century design and are punctuated with emerald and ruby jewel tones. The space also incorporates changing LED screens, local artwork by the nonprofit organization Art in Public Places, and an al fresco terrace for Sailors to take in the sea breeze before embarkation. Outside, an expansive “Sail the Virgin Way” sign and dramatic red lighting mirror the city’s lights.

Every Sailor is treated like a RockStar at Virgin Voyages, but for Sailors who’ve booked suite accommodations, they’ll gain access to Terminal V’s VIP entrance, expedited security screening and an exclusive pre-boarding lounge. The new cruise terminal also features a special Crew-only lounge where Virgin Voyages’ team can unwind, further demonstrating the brand’s commitment to creating the best gig ever for its employees. Rounding out the design are designated areas for drop offs, ride sharing and provisioning, all working together to provide a seamless shore-to-ship experience.

Virgin Voyages is committed to preserving the environment, protecting the oceans and fulfilling its mission of creating an “Epic Sea Change for All” and Terminal V is one of the only LEED Gold certified buildings in PortMiami. Materials were meticulously selected with sustainability in mind, from the color of the pavers in the entrance way to the glass. Even the air conditioning and electrical systems were planned to reduce Terminal V’s impact on the planet.

Prior to the opening of Terminal V, Virgin Voyages Miami based ship, Scarlet Lady was using a temporary shared terminal since she started sailing from the port in October 2021. Virgin Voyages Terminal V is completely new construction, and is just one of many new terminals opened in the past couple of years following Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line. Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises are also in the process of constructing new terminals that when completed, will change the look of PortMiami significantly. PortMiami is the busiest cruise port in the world and these new terminals will assist in making the embarkation process more efficiant for cruise passengers.

Virgin Voyages in Miami

Scarlet Lady in Miami

Welcome to Miami, Scarlet Lady.

I’ve been to the city many times in recent years to celebrate milestones with the Virgin Voyages team, from launching our brand, to breaking ground on our new terminal, to spending time with the team.

So it was a wonderful moment to be able to see our first ship, Scarlet Lady, docked in our beautiful home port.

Virgin Voyages

I had goosebumps getting on board, knowing this is where so many adventures will begin.

It was such fun sailing Scarlet Lady into New York earlier this month , and giving the UK a sneak peek with our Summer Soirée. But Virgin Voyages and Miami is a perfect match, and we love being a part of the cruising community here (even if we are intent on shaking it up!)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Virgin Voyages (@virginvoyages)

There are so many people who travel to Miami - it’s long been one of Virgin Atlantic ’s most popular destinations - and we’re sure everyone is going to love sailing with Virgin Voyages from here too. In fact, Virgin Atlantic gave Scarlet a sky-high welcome with a flyover.

What great timing with the US opening up borders to international travellers too – we can’t wait to welcome Virgin Atlantic customers onto our cruise ships too.

They will get to experience so much on board, which I took in first-hand during my trip. There’s so much to see and do, from the restaurants to the entertainment to the workout spaces (which we’ll share more of very soon). In the meantime, here’s a real whirlwind view around the trip.

One part that isn’t featured is the bridge, where I was fortunate to meet some of the team.

Virgin Voyages

I was proud to show off to my wife Joan as she joined us on board and got to see some of the ship’s incredible design features up close. I’m pleased to say she gave lots of good feedback! We had a delicious meal at The Wake – and I think she might even try out the piercing parlour when we go sailing together soon…

There is such a great energy on the ship, all started by the fantastic crew, and continued with our sailors getting into the spirit of things. We were thrilled to be joined by some of Miami’s sporting stars, and I enjoyed meeting Byron Jones, Brennan Scarlett, Xavien Howard, Victor Oladipo and Jeff Foster. Victor even convinced me to check out our on-board karaoke rooms - The Groupie – for a rendition of Like A Virgin. Let’s just say the photos are better than the video!

We were also delighted to have the Miami-Dade County’s Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, join us on board the ship. After a meeting with yours truly and Tom McAlpin, Virgin Voyages’ CEO, we enjoyed some toasts on the deck. As we celebrated with the County Commissioners and many of the people who have made it all happen, I was surprised and honoured to learn that our new terminal has been given a very special address: 718 West Cruise Boulevard. 7/18 just happens to be my birthday. Now that sounds a good date to go on a voyage…

In the meantime, Joan and I are looking forward to experiencing Scarlet Lady in action on a cruise soon. I hope many of you get to join the fun and book your own Virgin Voyage .

Virgin Voyages finally is starting up cruises out of Miami after more than a year of delays

Gene Sloan

The much-awaited start to Virgin Voyages sailings out of Florida finally is at hand.

After a series of delays that pushed back its worldwide debut by more than a year , the much-ballyhooed new cruise brand backed by Richard Branson today will kick off its first sailing with paying passengers from Miami -- its initial base for North American operations.

The four-night voyage will take place on the line's first ship, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady , and feature calls at Nassau in the Bahamas and at the Bahamian island of Bimini.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

It'll be the first Virgin Voyages sailing anywhere in the world other than a brief series of short trips out of Portsmouth, England, in August that were available to U.K. residents only.

Originally scheduled for early 2020, the debut of Virgin Voyages has been one of the most anticipated cruise industry events of the past few years.

Since plans for Virgin Voyages (initially called Virgin Cruises) were first announced in 2014, the brand has been promising to shake things up in the cruise world with a lively, adult-focused onboard experience that it has said would be unlike anything else in cruising.

virgin voyage port miami

Specifically, the line's ships -- in addition to Scarlet Lady, three more are on order -- have been designed to be fun and hip in a sophisticated, adult-oriented sort of way.

Notably, Scarlet Lady offers lots of stylish, adult-oriented nightspots and bars promising a hopping scene late into the night as well as a tattoo parlor , drag queen brunches and a colorful karaoke lounge . Passengers will be able to shake their phones to have bottles of Champagne delivered to wherever they happen to be standing on board.

Unlike some other cruise lines, Virgin Voyages also is eschewing buffets, dress codes and big Broadway-style theater shows. In place of the latter, the line is promising such entertainment as interactive dance parties, DJ sets, "microplays" and late-night games of dodgeball.

Still, perhaps the biggest differentiation between Scarlet Lady and the cruise vessels operated by the biggest cruise lines is that it doesn't have a single venue designed for children. That's because the ship has been purposely built as a kids-free zone , with no passengers under the age of 18 allowed on board.

While often dubbed the "cruise line for millennials" in media coverage, Virgin Voyages was designed to appeal to not just young adults but older adults who are "young at heart," executives have said recently.

In an interview with TPG last week , Virgin Voyages president and CEO Tom McAlpin said the average age of passengers on Scarlet Lady's first sailings in the U.K. was "in the 50s." Some passengers were in their 60s and 70s, he said.

McAlpin suggested Virgin Voyages was a line for adults of all ages who want to have a good time in an adult-focused atmosphere that isn't full of kids and isn't stuffy or formal.

Related: Why you've got it all wrong if you think Virgin Voyages is just for millennials

"I can have a more cool, hip pool party without screaming kids," McAlpin said, explaining the no-kids policy. "I can get in the elevator without kids getting in there and pushing all the buttons, and [the age limit means no] screaming teenagers running down the halls at two o'clock in the morning."

Virgin Voyages isn't the first cruise line to tout adult-focused ships where no kids are allowed . A handful of other lines such as Viking and the U.K.'s Saga Cruises have similar policies. But those lines offer a more traditional cruise experience aimed at older travelers.

The world's biggest cruise lines including Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line , meanwhile, draw large numbers of families with children and cater heavily to families with such onboard attractions as go-kart race tracks, surfing pools and laser tag courses .

Scarlet Lady initially was scheduled to sail its first "sneak-a-peek" voyages with paying passengers out of Miami in March of 2020. But Virgin Voyages delayed the ship's big reveal party in the city that month after the COVID-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic. It subsequently delayed the vessel's debut five more times.

All of the delays were blamed on COVID-19, which shut down most cruising around the world for more than a year.

Like the debut of Scarlet Lady, the debut of the line's second vessel, Valiant Lady, also was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally scheduled to begin sailing this year, it's now on track to begin operating in May of 2022.

Valiant Lady initially will sail seven-night voyages in the Mediterranean out of Barcelona.

Scarlet Lady is scheduled to sail year-round from Miami, offering a mix of four- and five-night voyages to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

A woman who won a free Virgin Voyages cruise said she would have to spend $8,000 on flights to claim the prize

  • An Australian woman who won a cruise said she would have to pay thousands of dollars to redeem it.
  • Her Virgin Voyages cruise was canceled due to Red Sea tensions, forcing her to rebook.
  • The cruise line offered Europe or Caribbean trips, but she said flights were too expensive.

Insider Today

An Australian woman who won a Virgin Voyages cruise said she and her partner would have to pay a combined $8,000 for flights due to a change in the ship's itinerary.

The woman, who spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) under the pseudonym Morgan, said the flights to the cruise ports are more expensive than the value of the adults-only cruise .

Morgan said she was traveling on a Virgin Airlines flight from Melbourne to her home in Tasmania in November when the passengers on board were told they had won a cruise.

In a video shared to Virgin Voyages' Instagram account in November, a flight attendant FaceTimed with Virgin founder Richard Branson to announce the prize.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Virgin Australia (@virginaustralia)

"I am pleased to gift each adult on board a free Virgin Voyages cruise," Branson said.

The video showed passengers excitedly cheering as flight attendants handed out cruise vouchers.

It is not known if this video is from the same flight that Morgan was on.

Morgan's voucher was for a twin-share cruise out of Australia or New Zealand on the cruise line's newest ship, Resilient Lady , which debuted in May 2023, as shown in a photo of the voucher published by ABC.

Morgan said she was initially "thrilled" as she and her partner used the twin-share voucher to book a cruise out of Brisbane. However, in February, the cruise line announced its upcoming Australia voyages were canceled due to tensions in the Red Sea, according to ABC and The Independent .

As a result, Morgan was told her only option was to redeem her voucher for a Europe or Caribbean voyage — which could cost thousands in flights.

Virgin Voyages has various Caribbean itineraries sailing out of San Juan and Miami, with ports in Tortola, Basseterre, St. John's, Fort-de-France, Castries, Kingstown, and Philipsburg.

Related stories

Morgan said two return flights from her home to the Caribbean would cost $8,000, which is more than the $7,000 value on the cruise voucher.

"When I clarified this with Virgin's PR team they stopped responding," she said.

ABC did not provide the dates and details of the flights Morgan referred to.

According to return flights on Skyscanner viewed by Business Insider, travel from Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, to San Juan can take up to 46 hours across multiple flights.

Prices for return flights varied throughout 2024 and 2025, with the most expensive being just over $2,500.

Virgin Voyages' Europe cruises have itineraries in Ireland, Scotland, and the Mediterranean. Similarly, travel from Hobart to Portsmouth, a cruise port in England, can take up to 44 hours across multiple flights.

BI viewed return flights from Hobart to Portsmouth as costing more than $1,200 on multiple dates throughout 2024.

"We were genuinely shocked, we thought Virgin would provide us with an alternative prize like a flight credit… or they would allow us to rebook on a later season," Morgan said.

"They sort of gave up on us … like 'you're a bit of a problem now,'" she said.

The cruise line's brand could be at risk, says marketing expert

"We apologise to our winners who can no longer redeem their prize due to the cancellation of Virgin Voyages' Australian and New Zealand cruises amid the conflict in the Red Sea," a spokesperson for Virgin Australia Group said in a statement obtained by BI.

They added that "safety is always our number-one priority" and that Virgin Voyages had offered all impacted guests complimentary cruises on its other international sailings.

Balkrushna Potdar, a marketing lecturer at the University of Tasmania, told ABC that Morgan's story could potentially damage Virgin Voyages' brand. The company could gain a reputation for using untrustworthy marketing tactics, Potdar said.

Potdar said the company could make things right by "covering the cost of flights to Europe or the Caribbean."

Virgin Voyages has been widely celebrated for its child-free cruises, which cater to millennial travelers . The company's first ship, Scarlet Lady, set sail in 2021 after being delayed due to the pandemic.

In September 2023, Virgin Voyages announced it had secured $550 million in funding managed by the Private Equity Group of Ares Management.

The funding will be used to enable the cruise line to support the brand's "rapid expansion into international markets, with a relentless focus on creating an outstanding and innovative customer experience," according to a press release.
