Helloween-Signing-Feed.jpg

Hamburg (Germany), Los Angeles (California), February 2024 - Reigning Phoenix Music (RPM) announces the signing of legendary power metal institution HELLOWEEN for their upcoming studio album! Since their formation in 1984 and the spectacular reunion in 2017, HELLOWEEN is undoubtedly one of the world's outstanding representatives of the genre.

RPM proudly comments on the signing: "It is a true milestone for Reigning Phoenix Music to welcome HELLOWEEN to our family of artists. HELLOWEEN is not just a band, they epitomize the energy and passion of power metal. Their music has inspired generations, and we are proud to collaborate in order to reach new heights."

HELLOWEEN themselves are equally enthusiastic about the new partnership: "Sven Bogner and his team have convinced us with their ideas and enthusiasm. They live and love metal, and this is what connects us - we look forward to be working with them!" explains Andi Deris from HELLOWEEN.

The combination of HELLOWEEN and Reigning Phoenix Music promises a powerful synergy between one of the world's most influential power metal bands and a label that is passionate about promoting up-and-coming talents as well as established artists. Fans can look forward to thrilling musical experiences and innovative projects.

The world tour everyone longed-for since over two years took us to 26 countries on 3 continents. After several pandemic related postponements the UNITED FORCES TOUR finally ignited in England May 2022 and brought together more than 800.000 fans, catapulting you into an euphoric orbit for a year and a half!

Sold out headline shows in Los Angeles, New York and Sao Paulo, legendary highlights like the show at the Prague O2-Arena, the Schleyerhalle in Stuttgart, or in front of 14.000 metalheads in Santiago de Chile and our first ever sold out concert at the iconic Budokan in Tokyo – the Holy Grail and the ultimate accolade for every rock band!

Without a doubt there were tears in our eyes at the bombastic Hell & Heaven Festival in Mexico City, which closed the tour.

Waving the UNITED FORCES flag, we opened a new live chapter after more than 35 years of band history: all seven of us rocked the stages, side by side with colleagues like Kiss, Scorpions or Deep Purple and, for the second time we headlined the Wacken Open Air!

We want to send our thanks to all of you, our loyal fans in Europe, the United States, Canada, Central & South America and Asia. We are incredibly grateful that you kept your tickets even with all the ongoing postponements and, that you stayed true fans, waiting patiently to finally see us live.

As well, we would like to thank our friends in HAMMERFALL for accompanying us the majority of the dates and spicing up the tour with their pure Swedish metal, ensuring a sweaty, energetic and bombastic package.

Andi: „What a ride! This world tour was something special for all of us – to get together with all our fans after the long waiting – a feeling we all missed so much! We enjoyed all the shows: our fans were superb and gave us only strikingly happy moments that led to an even stronger cohesion of the band! Personally, I can’t even imagine doing this without Michi and Kai anymore! And now we are looking very much forward to our next studio album with the crazy Pumpgang we´ve got!

Markus: "Hi Helloween folks all over the globe: you were the ones who welcomed us with open arms and hearts all over the world and you turned our world tour into an unique, euphoric party! We love you all and we are very much looking forward to continue this party with you, our Helloween family in 2024 – right after we are done with the new record.

Sascha: "Wow, what an incredible tour once again! I've met so many wonderful people, and the atmosphere during our concerts has been filled with love and energy. Each tour gives me a steady growing and fulfilling experience! Much love to all the fans out there, our hard working crew, dedicated management, and my talented bandmates!"

After 60 extremely emotional shows, we are now going directly into the songwriting process and follow up production for the successor of HELLOWEEN - it will be the second release of a new era, the new time calculation for us!

"BEST TIME": NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO OUT NOW!

HELLOWEEN would like to celebrate again with their fans – with "BEST TIME", THE party song of their 2021 album "HELLOWEEN".

The sunny and straight hymn by Sascha Gerstner and Andi Deris revives the good times and shows with their drifty guitars and top form front men a song full of the joys. About the songwriting of "BEST TIME" Sascha Gerstner states: "I had an '80’s Neo Noir-Vibe' in my head. The riff was originally a synth-riff, which we arranged later for guitars. The wording 'I will have the best time of my life' was pretty spontaneous because I had this strong feeling to leave the past behind and Seize the day! Andi instantly loved the idea as well as the refrain and together we created the track as it is now!" "BEST TIME" comes with a terrific 80’s retro-artwork by cartoonist and HELLOWEEN fan Marcos Moura in a 2,000 pieces limited edition of a 12-inch vinyl, available in three colors as well as a bundle: vinyl single and t-shirt.  BUY YOUR EXCLUSIVE „BEST TIME“ VINYL EDITION AND SHIRT NOW! Dear fans,  due to the sad and tragic event of this war, we are sorry to have to cancel our shows in Russia for 2023. We have amazing fans in Russia and Ukraine - music unites us all. Our thoughts are with all the innocent and good people, that have to take the unbelievable suffering from this insanity. We hope and pray for the wellbeing of all and a UNITED good time, with Ukrainian and Russian fans alike sometime soon, in a world that has finally come to peace and reason. Love to all!

"OUT FOR THE GLORY“

MUSIC VIDEO RELEASED!

No reason to sit back: with the clip for “OUT FOR THE GLORY“ the next exciting coup is coming as the successful year is ending. "I had an idea for a video where all band members are depicted as dinky, odd noble courtiers and ministers" Michael Weikath explains. „All of us should be floating in the clouds, Deris as a nutty emperor…and after a while more and more details came up and at one point in time we wrote everything down and sent the video concept to the Australian animation team“. Aaron McLoughlin, Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne, who has already been involved in several projects with Atomic Fire Records CEO Florian Milz (e.g. for Children Of Bodom, Alestorm, Tankard) mentioned: „When I heard that HELLOWEEN is interested in a collaboration I was totally gobsmacked. The boys are my absolute heroes since I was a teenager and I was sure that my students would love to work on a song by this band.“

And typically HELLOWEEN  - the creativity was so outrageous that it was impossible to feature everything in one music video. „Seven and a half minutes might not sound like a lot but in animation terms it is a marathon. We had so much great stuff that the production of “OUT FOR THE GLORY“ was a real challenge. Weiki wanted the video to look as cute as possible and we immediately knew: A legendary band from the other side of the planet wants us to create a medieval epic full of cuteness? You bet!" McLoughlin recollects.

With a bit over 10.000 frames the iconic animation short movie is not only extremely elaborate, but also wicked and spacy, will cause a commotion and hopefully also a lot of fun and enjoyment. As Michael Weikath wishes with a twinkle in his eye: „I now expect that everyone will enjoy this and think it is funny and also that they see the signification!"

The animated music video “OUT FOR THE GLORY“ is celebrating its world premiere on December, 17th 2021 and was implemented by the students of Bachelor of Design (Animation & Interactive Media), RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia .

Taken from the upcoming and self-titled new album "Helloween", released June 18th, 2021 and produced by Charlie Bauerfeind, the song features Deris along with his band mates Michael Kiske, Michael Weikath, Kai Hansen, Markus Grosskopf, Sascha Gerstner and Dani Löble in their prime.

Written by Kai Hansen, "Skyfall" is a storming more-than-7-minute ride into the Helloween universe (and beyond!) Produced by Martin Häusler, it is the most elaborate video clip in the history of the band.

As noted , German power/speed metal gang Helloween were forced to postpone their planned 2021 European tour due to the ongoing pandemic. New dates for the trek have been confirmed, with shows going down spring of 2022 with newly added HammerFall.

“ We all have to stick together to stand and endure this agonizing live music gap and because extraordinary circumstances require extraordinary measures, HELLOWEEN invited their friends from HAMMERFALL to join them on their European tour in order to create a tremendous metal-package together, ” says today’s announcement.

They add, “ The UNITED FORCES TOUR 2022 called alliance is not only the full HELLOWEEN experience, on top the fans will enjoy fine Swedish steel out of the HAMMERFALL forge. Both bands will have brand-new albums in their luggage and the European fans will be able to listen to the new songs live for the very first time on the UNITED FORCES TOUR 2022. The long–awaited end of the dry spell is in sight – coming with a double dose in March, April and May 2022 as we have to catch up two years of METALPARTY to get cured from a lot of withdrawal symptoms! ”

Helloween vocalist Andi Deris comments, “ We are ‘hammered’ to have our friends from HAMMERFALL with us on tour! Back in 2002 the band produced their album “Crimson Thunder” in my studio in Tenerife and we had a lot of fun back then. ”

HammerFall guitarist Oscar Dronjak adds, “ We are so ridiculously excited about this! Not only do we get to go out on tour again after two looooooooong years of stage draught, but we get to do it with a band that we love and was a great inspiration to us in forming HAMMERFALL in the first place. The UNITED FORCES TOUR will be something truly special, you can count on that! ”

HELLOWEEN Announces Spring 2023 North American Tour With HAMMERFALL

united forces tour

German power metallers HELLOWEEN will embark on the “United Forces” tour of North America in May 2023. Support on the 13-date trek will come from Swedish metallers HAMMERFALL . Tickets will go on sale on Friday, September 30 at 10 a.m. local time.

HELLOWEEN singer Andi Deris comments: “We can’t wait to be back and celebrate our new album with our fans in the U.S. and Canada!”

HAMMERFALL says: “ HAMMERFALL will accompany HELLOWEEN on their North American tour next year! The highly successful ‘United Forces’ tour will continue across the ocean in May and June, serving as the perfect prelude to the summer. You asked for it so here we go!”

HELLOWEEN & HAMMERFALL 2023 Tour dates:

May 13 – Dallas, TX – The Factory May 16 – St. Petersburg, FL – Jannus Live May 18 – Silver Spring, MD – The Fillmore May 20 – New York, NY – Terminal 5 May 21 – Worcester, MA – The Palladium May 23 – Toronto, ON – History May 24 – Royal Oak, MI – Royal Oak Music Hall May 26 – Chicago, IL – The Riviera May 27 – Minneapolis, MN – The Fillmore May 30 – Denver, CO – Ogden Theatre Jun. 01 – Las Vegas, NV – Brooklyn Bowl Jun. 02 – Los Angeles, CA – YouTube Theater Jun. 03 – San Francisco, CA – The Warfield

June 2021 saw the release of HELLOWEEN ‘s self-titled studio album . Adored by fans and critics alike, the record catapulted straight to the charts, earning the No. 1 position in Germany and Spain, the Top 5 of seven countries, and the Top 15 multiple times worldwide.  HELLOWEEN ‘s new album saw the legendary German power metallers going “back to the roots,” with the band recording fully analogue and Löble playing the drum kit previously used by HELLOWEEN ‘s original drummer, the late Ingo Schwichtenberg , on the legendary “Keeper Of The Seven Keys” recordings.

Produced by Charlie Bauerfeind and Dennis Ward , the new HELLOWEEN LP was recorded in part at the H.O.M.E. Studios in Hamburg (where everything started in 1984). The same recording console used for such HELLOWEEN albums as “Master Of The Rings” , “Time Of The Oath” and “Better Than Raw” was utilized to record the band’s new material. The effort was mixed at the Valhalla Studios of Ronald Prent ( IRON MAIDEN , DEF LEPPARD , RAMMSTEIN ).

The “Pumpkins United” lineup features returning singer Michael Kiske and guitarist/vocalist Kai Hansen alongside frontman Andi Deris , guitarists Michael Weikath and Sascha Gerstner , bassist Markus Grosskopf and drummer Daniel Löble .

The “Pumpkins United” tour marked the first time Kiske had played live with HELLOWEEN since 1993. Hansen , who departed HELLOWEEN in 1988, had been joining the band onstage on various tours and festival appearances throughout the years. The set featured several duets with Kiske and his replacement, Deris , along with many rarely played songs, including “Kids Of The Century” , “Rise And Fall” and “Livin’ Ain’t No Crime” . Hansen — who fronted HELLOWEEN until late 1986 — sang a medley of several early HELLOWEEN classics, including “Ride The Sky”, “Judas”, “Starlight” and “Heavy Metal (Is The Law)” .

HAMMERFALL ‘s latest studio album, “Hammer Of Dawn” , was released in February via Napalm Records . The LP was produced by longtime collaborator Fredrik Nordström ( IN FLAMES , OPETH ),who handled mixing, mastering, drum recording, and shared the duty of recording guitars and bass with guitarists Pontus Norgren and Oscar Dronjak . Jacob Hansen ( VOLBEAT ) produced the lead vocals.

As one of the main forces in heavy metal, HAMMERFALL have dominated not only the Swedish album charts, but album charts across Europe throughout their extensive career, while earning gold status thrice. Faced with the daunting task of following up the band’s last studio album, “Dominion” , an album that fans and critics hailed as one of the band’s strongest releases, HAMMERFALL collectively met the challenge head on and have delivered what many early listeners are predicting as the best metal album of 2022 and a high point of the band’s catalog.

Singer Joacim Cans stated about the new album: “It’s hard to describe in words how extremely happy and proud I am about the outcome of ‘Hammer Of Dawn’ . It was a struggle, for sure, but in the end we pulled it off and delivered a solid, vital and positive new album. Everyone is on top of his game and together we have created yet another milestone in HAMMERFALL history.”

HELLOWEEN To Join Forces With HAMMERFALL For Spring 2022 European Tour

The reunited expanded classic lineup of German power metallers HELLOWEEN will join forces with Sweden's HAMMERFALL for a European tour in the spring of 2022. The "United Forces 2022" trek will kick off on March 25 in Oslo, Norway and conclude on May 5 in London, England.

Commented HAMMERFALL singer Joacim Cans : " HELLOWEEN is probably the band that influenced me the most growing up and I am extremely psyched about touring together with the guys. For the true metal fan, 'United Forces 2022' will be the ultimate metal experience. An experience that no one should miss for anything in the world. If there is one tour to experience in 2022, this is the one! Next year the Hammer will fall harder than ever before and every day will be HELLOWEEN !"

Added HAMMERFALL guitarist Oscar Dronjak : "We are so ridiculously excited about this! Not only do we get to go out on tour again after two looooooooong years of stage draught, but we get to do it with a band that we love and was a great inspiration to us in forming HAMMERFALL in the first place. The 'United Forces' tour will be something truly special, you can count on that!"

Said HELLOWEEN 's Andi Deris : "We are 'hammered' to have our friends from HAMMERFALL with us on tour! Back in 2002, the band produced their album 'Crimson Thunder' in my studio in Tenerife and we had a lot of fun back then. This mega package is delivering the appropriate metal-spectacle to enter the stage with full power!"

"United Forces 2022" tour dates:

Mar. 25 - Oslo, Norway - Sentrum Scene Mar. 26 - Gothenburg, Sweden - Partille Arena Mar. 28 - Helsinki, Finland - Black Box Mar. 29 - Talinn, Estonia - Noblessneri Valukoda Apr. 01 - Bamberg, Germany - Brose Arena Apr. 02 - Hamburg, Germany - Sporthalle Apr. 03 - Berlin, Germany - Verti Music Hall Apr. 04 - Regensburg, Germany - Donau Arena Apr. 08 - Madrid, Spain - Wizink Center Apr. 09 - Barcelona, Spain - St. Jordi Club Apr. 11 - Milan, Italy - Lorenzini District Apr. 12 - Kempten, Germany - Black Box Apr. 13 - Zurich, Switzerland - Samsung Hall Apr. 15 - Luxembourg, Luxembourg - Rockhal Apr. 16 - Tilburg, Netherlands - 013 Apr. 18 - Katovice, Poland - MCK Apr. 20 - Sofia, Bulgaria - Arena Armeec Apr. 22 - Vienna, Austria - Gasometer Apr. 23 - Prague, Czech Republic - O2 Apr. 24 - Zvolen, Slovakia - Ice Stadium Apr. 26 - Budapest, Hungary - Papp Laszlo Sportarena Apr. 29 - Bochum, Germany - Ruhrcongress Apr. 30 - Stuttgart, Germany - Schleyerhalle May 01 - Frankfurt, Germany - Jahrhunderthalle May 04 - Manchester, UK - Manchester Academy May 05 - London, UK - Brixton Academy

HELLOWEEN will release its new, self-titled album on June 18 via Nuclear Blast . The disc's first single, "Skyfall" , will arrive on April 2.

The cover artwork for "Helloween" was painted by artist Eliran Kantor , who has previously worked with HATEBREED , SOULFLY , TESTAMENT , ICED EARTH and SODOM , among others.

The "Pumpkins United" lineup features returning singer Michael Kiske and guitarist/vocalist Kai Hansen alongside current singer Andi Deris , guitarists Michael Weikath and Sascha Gerstner , bassist Markus Grosskopf and drummer Daniel Löble .

Produced by Charlie Bauerfeind and Dennis Ward , the new HELLOWEEN LP was recorded in part at the H.O.M.E. Studios in Hamburg (where everything started in 1984). The same recording console used for such HELLOWEEN albums as "Master Of The Rings" , "Time Of The Oath" and "Better Than Raw" was utilized to record the band's new material. The effort was mixed at the Valhalla Studios of Ronald Prent ( IRON MAIDEN , DEF LEPPARD , RAMMSTEIN ).

HELLOWEEN 's new album saw the legendary German power metallers going "back to the roots," with the band recording fully analogue and Löble playing the drum kit previously used by HELLOWEEN 's original drummer, the late Ingo Schwichtenberg , on the legendary "Keeper Of The Seven Keys" recordings.

The "Pumpkins United" tour marked the first time Kiske had played live with HELLOWEEN since 1993. Hansen , who departed HELLOWEEN in 1988, had been joining the band onstage on various tours and festival appearances throughout the years. The set featured several duets with Kiske and his replacement, Deris , along with many rarely played songs, including "Kids Of The Century" , "Rise And Fall" and "Livin' Ain't No Crime" . Hansen — who fronted HELLOWEEN until late 1986 — sang a medley of several early HELLOWEEN classics, including "Ride The Sky" , "Judas" , "Starlight" and "Heavy Metal (Is The Law)" .

The "Pumpkins United" lineup of HELLOWEEN already released one new song — aptly titled "Pumpkins United" — in October 2017.

Helloween Blasts Three New Songs To Start United Forces 2022 Tour [Setlist]

Posted by Hunter Bolding | May 5, 2022 | Live Events , Music | 0 |

The United Forces Tour between Helloween and Hammerfall took a while to get going. Whether it was delayed due to COVID or just scheduling, the two bands have been on pause for what seems like forever. Helloween released their self-titled album in 2021, which was as close to a masterpiece as you can get. Now, they kicked off the tour in Manchester, England with three songs from that album, but they might not be the ones you think. Here’s the setlist thanks to our friends at Setlist.fm .

united forces tour

As you can see, we only get three songs from the new album among “six” (counting songs in the medley) other songs that they haven’t played since at least 2016. Overall, it looks somewhat similar to the Pumpkins United setlist with the structure, but fewer songs overall. There are definitely some interesting inclusions including “Save Us”, “Straight Out of Hell”, and “Where The Rain Grows”. Seeing as how this isn’t the Halloween World Tour , it makes sense that they’re not including more songs from that album. It’s disappointing that they’re not including some of the better tracks like “Out For The Glory”, “Fear Of The Fallen”, or “Robot King”. There’s still plenty of time to hear those tracks, however.

Helloween isn’t like Iron Maiden with their setlists, they change over the course of a tour, and they shuffle songs in and out as they please. So for people going out to see them on the United Forces Tour with Hammerfall, you could still hear some different songs than these.

Overall, even though I have some critiques, I’d still kill to hear this setlist.

Updated to remove COVID-specific information and the kidnapping risk indicator as well as updates to security risks.

Do not travel to Russia due to the unpredictable consequences of the  unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces , the potential for  harassment and the singling out of U.S. citizens for detention by Russian government security officials , the  arbitrary enforcement of local law ,  limited flights into and out of Russia , the  Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia , and the possibility of  terrorism .  U.S. citizens residing or travelling in Russia should depart immediately.  Exercise increased caution due to  the risk of wrongful detentions.

The U.S. government’s ability to provide routine or emergency services to U.S. citizens in Russia is severely limited, particularly in areas far from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, due to Russian government limitations on travel for embassy personnel and staffing, and the ongoing suspension of operations, including consular services, at U.S. consulates.

There have been numerous reports of drone attacks, explosions, and fires in areas in Western and Southern Russia, particularly near the Russian border with Ukraine, as well as in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In the event of an emergency, U.S. citizens should follow instructions from local authorities and seek shelter immediately.

In September 2022, the Russian government mobilized citizens to the armed forces in support of its invasion of Ukraine. Russia may refuse to acknowledge dual nationals’ U.S. citizenship, deny their access to U.S. consular assistance, subject them to mobilization, prevent their departure from Russia, and/or conscript them.

U.S. citizens should note that U.S. credit and debit cards no longer work in Russia, and options to electronically transfer funds from the United States are extremely limited due to sanctions imposed on Russian banks. There are reports of cash shortages within Russia.

Commercial flight options are extremely limited and are often unavailable on short notice. If you wish to depart Russia, you should make independent arrangements as soon as possible. The U.S. Embassy has severe limitations on its ability to assist U.S. citizens to depart the country and transportation options may suddenly become even more limited. Click  here  for Information for U.S. Citizens Seeking to Depart Russia.

U.S. Embassy personnel are generally not permitted to travel on Russian air carriers due to safety concerns.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded the air safety rating for Russia from Category 1 to Category 2 on April 21, 2022, due to Russia’s Federal Agency for Air Transport noncompliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) prohibiting U.S. aviation operations into, out of, within, or over those areas of the Moscow Flight Information Region (FIR), the Samara FIR (UWWW) and the Rostov-na-Donu (URRV) FIR within 160NM of the boundaries of the Dnipro (UKDV) Flight Information Regions. For more information, U.S. citizens should consult the  Federal Aviation Administration’s Prohibitions, Restrictions, and Notices .

The right of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are not consistently protected in Russia. U.S. citizens should avoid all political or social protests and not photograph security personnel at these events. Russian authorities have arrested U.S. citizens who have participated in demonstrations and there are numerous reports Russian nationals have been detained for social media activity.

Country Summary:

U.S. citizens, including former and current U.S. government and military personnel and private citizens engaged in business who are visiting or residing in Russia, have been interrogated without cause and threatened by Russian officials, and may become victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion.

Russian security services may fail to notify the U.S. Embassy of the detention of a U.S. citizen and unreasonably delay U.S. consular assistance. Russian security services are increasing the arbitrary enforcement of local laws to target foreign and international organizations they consider “undesirable.”

Russian security services have arrested U.S. citizens on spurious charges, singled out U.S. citizens in Russia for detention and harassment, denied them fair and transparent treatment, and convicted them in secret trials or without presenting credible evidence. Furthermore, Russian authorities arbitrarily enforce local laws against U.S. citizen religious workers and have opened questionable criminal investigations against U.S. citizens engaged in religious activity. U.S. citizens should avoid travel to Russia to perform work for or volunteer with non-governmental organizations or religious organizations.

There have been multiple security incidents in southwestern Russia related to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine. The Russian government declared martial law in Russia’s regions bordering Ukraine (Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, Krasnodar) on October 20, 2022. The martial law regime allows the rapid introduction of restrictive measures such as curfew, seizure of private property, restriction of entry/exit and freedom of movement, internment of foreigners, forced relocation of local residents, and restrictions on public gatherings. U.S. citizens should avoid all travel to these areas.

Recent legislation has expanded the ability of Russian authorities to detain, question, and arrest individuals suspected of acting against Russia’s interests, including posts on personal social media accounts, engaging with foreign and international entities, discrediting the Russian state or military, as well as advocating for the rights of LGBTQI+ persons.

Terrorist groups, both transnational and local terrorist organizations, and individuals inspired by extremist ideology continue plotting possible attacks in Russia. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs and systems, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas. Travel to the North Caucasus (including Chechnya and Mt. Elbrus) is prohibited for U.S. government employees and strongly discouraged for U.S. citizens.

The international community, including the United States and Ukraine, does not recognize Russia’s purported annexation of Crimea as well as four other Ukrainian oblasts – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya – that Russia has purported to annex more recently. There is extensive Russian Federation military presence in these areas. Russia staged its further invasion of Ukraine, in part, from occupied Crimea, and Russia is likely to take further military actions in Crimea, and the four other Ukrainian oblasts are the subject of intensive fighting. There are continuing abuses against foreigners and the local population by the occupation authorities in these regions, particularly against those who are seen as challenging Russia’s authority.

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv continues to provide consular services to U.S. citizens in Crimea as well as four other Ukrainian oblasts partially occupied by Russia – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya, although the ongoing conflict severely restricts the Embassy’s ability to provide services in these areas.

German power metal legends HELLOWEEN has just announced a major European tour for 2022. The band will have support from other power metal icons, HammerFall . From The Press Release

united forces tour

It was already foreseeable: Due to the pandemic, the originally for April/May scheduled  HELLOWEEN  European tour has to be postponed again. However, this is no reason to hang your head, even more so now: it is getting even more powerful in 2022!   We all have to stick together to stand and endure this agonizing live music gap and because extraordinary circumstances require extraordinary measures,  HELLOWEEN  invited their friends from  HAMMERFALL  to join them on their European tour in order to create a tremendous metal-package together. The  UNITED FORCES TOUR 2022  called alliance is not only the full  HELLOWEEN  experience, on top the fans will enjoy fine Swedish steel out of the  HAMMERFALL  forge. Both bands will have brand-new albums in their luggage and the European fans will be able to listen to the new songs live for the very first time on the UNITED FORCES TOUR 2022 . The long–awaited end of the dry spell is in sight – coming with a double dose in March, April and May 2022 as we have to catch up two years of  METALPARTY  to get cured from a lot of withdrawal symptoms!   Andi Deris:   “We are ‘hammered’ to have our friends from HAMMERFALL with us on tour! Back in 2002 the band produced their album “Crimson Thunder” in my studio in Tenerife and we had a lot of fun back then.”  This mega-package is delivering the appropriate metal-spectacle to enter the stage with full power!  Oscar Dronjak  can hardly wait:  “We are so ridiculously excited about this! Not only do we get to go out on tour again after two looooooooong years of stage draught, but we get to do it with a band that we love and was a great inspiration to us in forming HAMMERFALL in the first place. The UNITED FORCES TOUR will be something truly special, you can count on that! “   For the dry run up front,  HELLOWEEN  is releasing their fantastic new album and with the unification of their three vocalists  Kiske,   Deris  &  Hansen  the album reminiscences to all eras of the band’s history. This already is a sensation in itself, but also  HAMMERFALL  is ready to release a brand-new record before the tour starts. A great forerunner to get warmed up for the double load of live power with the ultimate  UNITED FORCES TOUR 2022 . And whoever misses the just announced dates was probably never infected by the metal virus …

Russia says it may take extra nuclear deterrence steps if US puts missiles in Europe/Asia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia may take extra steps in the area of nuclear deterrence if the United States deploys intermediate and short-range missiles in Europe and Asia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the state RIA news agency in an interview.

RIA referred to U.S. plans, announced in April, to deploy missiles in the Indo-Pacific region in response to what Washington sees as growing Chinese militarisation.

Such deployments would have previously been outlawed under the landmark 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia which the United States formally withdrew from in 2019 after saying that Moscow was violating the accord, an accusation the Kremlin denied.

Moscow has long warned it would scrap a moratorium it proposed after the treaty lapsed on the deployment of short and medium range missiles if Washington went ahead with plans to deploy such missiles in Asia and Europe.

Lavrov told RIA that Russia might have to take other steps too.

"We do not rule out additional steps in the sphere of nuclear deterrence, because our command centres and the locations of our nuclear forces will be in range of American forward-based missiles," said Lavrov.

The latest clash between Moscow and Washington came as the Kremlin kicked off exercises to simulate the use of tactical nuclear weapons in a likely signal to the West against deeper involvement in Ukraine .

In a briefing Tuesday, Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said the U.S. has assessed that Moscow deployed the satellite May 16. “Russia launched a satellite into low Earth orbit that we assess is likely a counterspace weapon, presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit,” he said.

It was launched into the same orbit as a U.S. government satellite, he said, without elaborating on whether the American satellite was in any immediate danger.

The U.S. will be monitoring the situation, Ryder added, but is ready to protect the "space domain."

Russia’s state space agency, Roscosmos, said in a statement in the early morning hours of May 17 local time that a Soyuz launch vehicle with “spacecraft on board” took off from its Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia “in the interests of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.” It was unclear whether the launch was related to the “counterspace weapon” that the U.S. assessed Russia put into space. The latest space feud comes three months after Washington raised fears that Russia was developing a space-based nuclear weapon potentially designed to target U.S. satellites. Moscow strongly denied it, with President Vladimir Putin saying he was categorically against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space .

The new U.S. assessment was once again dismissed by Russia on Wednesday.

“I don’t think we should respond to any information hoax from Washington,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying by state news agency Tass, adding that Russia has consistently opposed the deployment of weapons in low Earth orbit.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a daily news briefing that Russia has been acting in accordance with international law and has repeatedly called for a ban on any weapons in space, but those initiatives have been turned down, including by the U.S.

Washington and Moscow have clashed over the space weapons issue at the United Nations in recent weeks.

A Russian-drafted Security Council resolution that called on all countries to prevent “for all time” the placement, threat or use of any weapons in outer space failed Monday. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the outcome of the vote “disappointing,” saying that the U.S. and its partners had once again demonstrated their “true priorities” in the space field, including transforming it into an “arena of military confrontation.”

But Russia vetoed a U.S.-drafted resolution last month that called on countries to prevent an arms race in outer space.

The latest exchange of rhetoric comes amid growing tensions between Russia and the U.S. over Washington’s continued support for Ukraine's fight in the two-year war. Putin has engaged in nuclear brinkmanship on many occasions throughout the war, threatening to unleash Russia’s powerful nuclear arsenal if its existence is threatened.

On Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had begun the first phase of the drills on the preparation and use of nonstrategic nuclear weapons in its southern military district, which borders Ukraine.

The exercises were ordered by Putin earlier this month . The Defense Ministry reiterated Tuesday that the drills were in response to “provocative statements and threats of certain Western officials regarding the Russian Federation,” in a likely reference to a growing discussion around the possibility of NATO troops being sent to Ukraine.

Moscow attack exposes cracks in Putin's security facade

G erman commentators have labelled the terrorist attack near Moscow as a significant embarrassment for Vladimir Putin. They argue that Russian security forces, preoccupied with suppressing dissent, overlooked clear warnings from the Islamic State and the United States. The Kremlin is expected to lash out at Ukraine in response.

Kornelius suggests that these attacks and the fear they instilled served as justification for Putin's military endeavours in Chechnya, cementing his authoritative image. He views the recent attack on a concert hall in Krasnogorsk as both a tragedy and a direct threat to a regime that has redefined terror to target Ukraine. According to Kornelius, despite the overt focus on Ukraine, the inability to guard against Islamist threats signals a grave oversight.

25 Years After NATO Bombings: Serbia's Complex Relationship with the West and Putin's Influence

In "Tageszeitung," Inna Hartwig criticizes the Russian government's fixation on labelling dissenters as terrorists while neglecting genuine threats. Putin's delayed response to the attack mirrors his historical pattern of evasive behaviour in crisis situations, indicating a preference for control over transparency.

Ukraine-Russia war – live: Biden lifts ban on Kyiv using US missiles to defend Kharkiv against Putin attacks

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

US president Joe Biden has given Ukraine the go-ahead to use American weaponry to strike inside Russia strictly for defending Kharkiv , according to two US officials.

The sources stressed that US policy calling on Ukraine not to use American long-range missiles and other munitions against Russia offensively has not changed.

Kyiv officials have stepped up calls on the US administration to allow its forces to defend itself against attacks originating from Russian territory.

Russia is building up forces near northern Kharkiv where it launched an offensive this month, Ukraine’s top commander has said.

However, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi said Moscow still lacked the troop numbers to stage a major push in the area.

Syrskyi said Russia was continuing to send additional regiments and brigades from other areas and from training grounds to bulk up its troops on two main lines of attack in Kharkiv region’s north .

Sweden has sent two crucial ASC 890 control and surveillance aircraft to Ukraine as part of a £981 million military package – the largest tranche of support provided by the Scandinavian country.

Ukraine destroys seven Russia-launched missiles, says air force

Us lets kyiv use its weapons to defend kharkiv.

Thursday 30 May 2024 21:53 , Jane Dalton

The United States has given Ukraine permission to use US-supplied weapons to target Russia, but solely for defending Ukraine’s embattled city of Kharkiv, an American official has said.

The decision amounts to a reversal by US president Joe Biden , who had until now steadfastly refused to let Ukraine use American weaponry for strikes inside Russia.

Ukrainian officials, most notably Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, have been increasingly vocal in arguing that the restriction was putting Ukrainian forces in an untenable situation as Russia has intensified attacks around the northeast Kharkiv region.

Two injured after Ukrainian strike on Russia’s Krasnodar oil depot sparks major fire

05:16 , Shweta Sharma

Two people suffered injuries after a Ukrainian drone strike on an oil depot in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar caused a massive fire, officials in the region said.Krasnodar governor Veniamin Kondratyev said the fire was caused by falling drone debris and has been controlled since.

“The situation is more serious in the Temryuk district, the infrastructure of the oil depot there was damaged by an air strike,” he said on the Telegram messaging app.

The head of the Temryuk district of Krasnodar said on Telegram that two people suffered minor injuries as a result of the attack.

The extent of the fire is not yet known.

There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Kyiv has said targeting Russia’s energy, military and transport infrastructure undermines Moscow’s overall war effort.

Russia has previously denounced Ukranian attacks on its civilian energy facilities and residential areas as terrorism.

Ukraine’s army chief says Russia pushing more troops into critical Kharkiv region

05:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The chief of Ukraine ‘s army has said Russia is pushing more troops into the northeastern Kharkiv region where Moscow’s forces have made significant advances in a spring offensive.

Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence operation claimed that sea drones destroyed two Russian KS-701 patrol boats in the Black Sea off the Russia-annexed Crimean peninsula . Russian officials did not immediately comment on the claim.

The air force said the overnight attacks included eight S-300 ballistic missiles, 11 cruise missiles and 32 Shahed drones. All the drones and seven of the cruise missiles were shot down, the air force said but did not give other details.

China to skip Switzerland’s Ukraine peace conference

04:55 , Shweta Sharma

China will not attend the Ukraine peace conference being hosted by Switzerland next month, according to four sources with direct knowledge of the matter.

Beijing declined the invitation because the conditions for their participation were not met, including the inclusion of both Russia and Ukraine, three sources stated.

The Swiss government, which has a largely neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war, is hosting a summit on 15-16 June and expecting a diverse turnout from various global regions to pave the way for a peace process in Ukraine.

The Swiss have not invited Moscow, casting doubts on what the conference could achieve without the participation of one of the parties to the war.

China has told diplomats this week that the conditions that called for the conference to recognise both Russia and Ukraine were not met, one source said.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov yesterday suggested that China could arrange a peace conference in which Russia and Ukraine could participate.

Kremlin says NATO is pushing Ukraine to continue 'senseless war' with Russia

04:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The Kremlin said on Thursday that the United States, NATO and some European countries were encouraging Ukraine to continue what it called Kyiv’s “senseless war” with Russia and accused them of escalating tensions in recent weeks.

Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022 in what it called a special military operation, and Kyiv says it is defending itself - with Western help - in an effort to expel all Russian forces from its territory.

It says Russia is working hard to try to undermine its morale and will to fight.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Thursday accused some Western countries of raising tensions in recent weeks by allowing Ukraine to use weapons they had supplied against targets inside Russia, something the United States has not publicly agreed to do yet.

“The member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance - the United States in particular, other European capitals - have in recent days and weeks embarked on a new round of escalation,” Peskov told reporters.

“They are doing this deliberately. We hear a lot of bellicose statements. ... They are encouraging Ukraine in every possible way to continue this senseless war,” he said.

“This will all, of course, inevitably have consequences and will ultimately be very damaging to the interests of those countries that have taken the path of escalation.”

Hungary's foreign minister visits Belarus despite EU sanctions, talks about expanding ties

03:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Hungary ‘s top diplomat visited Belarus on Wednesday for talks on expanding ties despite the European Union’s sanctions against the country.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó declared that “our position is clear: the fewer sanctions, the more cooperation!”

The EU has slapped an array of sweeping sanctions on Belarus for the repression, which followed mass protests fueled by the 2020 presidential election that was widely seen by the opposition and the West as rigged. Belarus’ isolation further deepened after authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko allowed Russian troops to use his country’s territory to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

Ukraine's Zelenskyy is expected in Normandy for commemorations of 80 years since D-Day, Macron says

French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday he will greet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy along with other world leaders in Normandy for the 80th anniversary commemorations of D-Day.

President Joe Biden is also scheduled to attend this year’s commemorations of the landings that led to the liberation of France and Europe from Nazi Germany’s occupation.

Dozens of World War II veterans are expected to return, many perhaps for the last time, to Normandy’s beaches.

Ukraine army head says Russia augmenting its troops in critical Kharkiv region

Friday 31 May 2024 00:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Russia conducted an array of aerial attacks on Ukraine with cruise missiles, drones and ballistic missiles, Ukraine’s air force said Thursday, while the chief of the army said Russia is increasing its troop concentration in the Kharkiv region where Moscow ‘s forces have made significant advances in a spring offensive.

Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence operation claimed that sea drones destroyed two Russian KS-701 patrol boats in the Black Sea off the Russia-annexed Crimean peninsula. Russian officials did not immediately comment on the claim.

Russia is finalising work on 'retaliatory measures' against EU over ban on some Russian media

Thursday 30 May 2024 23:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Russia‘s foreign ministry said on Thursday it was finalising a proposal for “retaliatory measures” against the European Union over the bloc’s ban on the broadcast of four Russian media outlets on its territory.

The EU said earlier this month it was suspending the distribution of the Voice of Europe, the RIA Novosti news agency and the Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspapers.

The European Council said in a statement it was acting because the outlets “have been essential and instrumental in bringing forward and supporting Russia‘s war of aggression against Ukraine.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had earlier warned of an extremely painful response to the ban.

On Thursday, she told a news briefing that response was in its final stages of preparation and would be submitted for approval in the coming days.

Blinken condemns ‘poison’ of Russian misinformation

Thursday 30 May 2024 22:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has attacked Russian attempts to sow discord in democracies with misinformation after hinting that the Biden administration may soon allow Ukraine to use American-supplied munitions to strike inside Russia.

In Prague for a Nato foreign ministers meeting, Mr Blinken hit out at Moscow’s use of misinformation and disinformation, calling it a “poison”, and signing an agreement with the Czech government to combat it.

He also toured a Czech military base, where he saw armoured vehicles that Prague is sending to Kyiv to help fight Russia‘s invasion, and received a briefing on a Czech initiative to supply Ukraine with a million rounds of ammunition by the end of the year.

“We know that a major front in the competition that we have, the adversarial relationship that we have, notably with Russia, is on the information front,” he said.

Mr Blinken said the agreement with the Czechs - the 17th such accord the US has signed with partner nations - will help “to effectively deal with misinformation and disinformation, which is a poison being injected into our democracies by our adversaries”.

“The more we’re able to do together both between our countries but also with other countries, the more effective we’re going to be exposing it and dealing with it,” he told reporters at a signing ceremony with Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky.

Europe's cybersecurity chief says disruptive attacks have doubled recently, sees Russia behind many

Thursday 30 May 2024 21:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Disruptive digital attacks, many of which have been traced to Russia-backed groups, have doubled in the European Union in recent months and are also targeting election-related services, according to the EU’s top cybersecurity official.

Juhan Lepassaar, head of the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, or ENISA, told The Associated Press in an interview that attacks with geopolitical motives have steadily risen since Russia ‘s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

“The number of hacktivist attacks (against) European infrastructure — threat actors whose main aim is to cause disruption — has doubled from the fourth quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of 2024,” Lepassaar said late Tuesday at the agency’s headquarters in Athens .

Zelensky urges Biden to attend Ukraine peace summit – saying only Putin would applaud him staying away

Thursday 30 May 2024 20:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Joe Biden to attend an upcoming Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland, saying that only Vladimir Putin will “applaud” him if he does not show up.

Though the Biden administration has been a staunch supporter of Kyiv , reports suggest President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are set to miss the summit, which would be a huge blow to Mr Zelensky – even if some form of presence from Washington is expected.

The move has raised concern about Mr Biden’s shifting interests ahead of the US presidential election , where he will face off against former president Donald Trump .

UK vows action over hundreds of Ukrainians with disabilities vanished into Russia

Thursday 30 May 2024 18:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The British government has said it is “ determined to hold to account “ those responsible for hundreds of Ukrainians with disabilities , including children, believed to have been forcibly removed to Russian-held territory and Russia itself, after a special report by The Independent .

In response to the 18-month investigation, the deputy foreign secretary, Andrew Mitchell, called the practice “despicable” and pledged further support to the disabled community in the war-wracked country.

The Independent ’s four-article series revealed evidence that since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, people with disabilities have been held incommunicado, in squalid conditions and even forced into adopting Russian passports in order to secure treatment or care.

US Treasury official visits Ukraine to discuss sanctions on Russia and seizing Russian assets

Thursday 30 May 2024 17:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

A senior U.S. Treasury official is in Kyiv this week to talk with government officials about U.S. financial support for Ukraine , efforts to tighten sanctions on Russia and plans to use immobilized Russian sovereign assets for the benefit of Ukraine as it fends off Russian forces.

Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo’s trip comes as Russia gains territory on the battlefield after an especially lengthy delay in U.S. military aid left Ukraine at the mercy of Russia’s bigger army and as the outlook for Ukraine’s state finances is on shakier ground.

Adeyemo is set to meet with officials in Ukraine’s finance ministry and president’s office. He’s also planning a stop at the Kyiv School of Economics to speak with faculty and civil society groups working on sanctions policy and ways to make sanctions on Russia more effective.

US close to completing Ukraine bilateral security deal talks, US official says

Thursday 30 May 2024 16:30 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The United States is close to completing negotiations on a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine that President Joe Biden announced last year at a G7 meeting, a U.S. official said on Thursday.

G7 nations, led by the U.S., unveiled a framework in July for the long-term security of Ukraine to boost its defenses against Russia.

The U.S. official’s comment came after the Financial Times reported on Thursday that the U.S. and Ukraine were close to signing a bilateral security pact.

NATO chief seeks 40 billion euros per year for Ukraine military aid, source says

Thursday 30 May 2024 16:05 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg will ask allies to pledge a minimum of 40 billion euros ($43.37 billion) annually to fund military aid for Ukraine, an alliance source told Reuters on Thursday.

“We need to sustain that current level of support as a minimum to provide the predictability Ukraine needs, for as long as necessary,” the NATO source said, adding that allies had provided some 40 billion euros per year since Russia‘s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

NATO foreign ministers were to gather on Thursday evening for a two-day meeting in Prague and were expected to discuss Stoltenberg’s proposal during a working session on Friday.

Zelensky hails key allies as Sweden becomes third country this week to pledge $1bn in military aid

Thursday 30 May 2024 15:10 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Sweden has become the third country in as many days to pledge more than $1 billion (£785m) in additional military aid to Ukraine as president Volodymyr Zelensky concluded a three-day tour of Europe .

The package, announced by defence minister Pal Jonson, is the largest single tranche of support donated by Sweden since Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, valued at 13.3 billion Swedish crowns (£981m).

It comes at a vital time for Ukraine as Russian forces, emboldened by an advantage born from a US military package delayed by more than six months, advance across the 640-mile frontline .

NATO chief calls for discussion on restrictions for arms supplied to Ukraine

Thursday 30 May 2024 14:40 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday said ‘the time has come’ for members of the military alliance to re-consider some of the restrictions attached to the use of weapons they supplied to Ukraine in support of the country’s fight against Russia.

Western countries appeared increasingly divided in recent weeks on whether or not the Ukrainian military should be allowed to strike targets on Russian soil.

Some of Ukraine‘s allies argued this is part of legitimate self-defence against an invasion, while others voiced fears it could drag the West into the conflict

France's Macron urges a green light for Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia with Western weapons

Thursday 30 May 2024 12:21 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Western countries should let Ukraine strike military bases inside Russia with the sophisticated long-range weapons they are providing to Kyiv, French President Emmanuel Macron said, pressuring his allies in the most recent sign of a potentially significant policy shift that could help change the complexion of the war.

The question of whether to allow Ukraine to hit targets on Russian soil with Western-supplied weaponry has been a delicate issue since the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.

France could announce sending military trainers to Ukraine soon, diplomats say

Thursday 30 May 2024 11:04 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

France could soon send military trainers to Ukraine despite the concerns of some allies and criticism by Russia, and may announce its decision next week during a visit by the Ukrainian president, three diplomatic sources said.

The diplomats said Paris hoped to forge and lead a coalition of countries offering such assistance to Kyiv’s war effort even though some of its European Union partners fear it could make a direct conflict with Russia more likely.

France would initially send a limited number of personnel to assess the modalities of a mission before dispatching several hundred trainers, two of the diplomats said.

Training would centre around demining, keeping equipment operational and technical expertise for warplanes to be provided by the West, they said. Paris would also finance, arm, and train a Ukrainian motorised brigade.

“The arrangements are very advanced and we could expect something next week,” said one of the sources.

Russia is building up forces near the northern part of Ukraine‘s Kharkiv region where it launched an offensive this month, but it still lacks the troop numbers to stage a major push in the area, Ukraine‘s top commander said on Thursday.

Ukraine says it has stabilised the front in the northeastern Kharkiv region where Russian forces launched a cross-border assault on May 10 that opened a new front in the 27-month-old war and stretched Kyiv’s outnumbered troops.

Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi said Russia was continuing to send additional regiments and brigades from other areas and from training grounds to bulk up its troops on two main lines of attack in Kharkiv region’s north.

That includes the Strilecha-Lyptsi area between two small villages and the vicinity of the border town of Vovchansk where there has been street fighting.

“These forces are currently insufficient for a large-scale offensive and breakthrough of our defence,” Syrskyi said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.

Ukraine‘s General Staff said its forces were continuing to strengthen their defensive lines in the area and repelled one Russian attack near the village of Starytsia on the Kharkiv front on Thursday. Syrskyi said Ukraine‘s “creation of an ammunition reserve” had also reduced the offensive capabilities of Russian forces.

National Guard spokesperson Ruslan Muzychuk said Russian forces had not advanced in the Kharkiv region in the past day.

Governor of Russian 'oil capital' region criticised for war comments resigns

Thursday 30 May 2024 10:01 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Natalia Komarova, the governor of Siberia’s oil-rich Khanty-Mansiisk region who was last year criticised for remarks she made about the war in Ukraine, announced on Thursday that she was resigning from her post.

In a video posted on her official Telegram channel, Komarova, who oversaw a region which accounts for more than 40% of Russia‘s total oil output, said she was moving to another undisclosed job even though her term in office does not expire until next year.

Komarova, who did not explain what had prompted her decision, was criticised by an anti-war activist last year who called for her to be prosecuted for discrediting the Russian army after she appeared to suggest that Moscow had not needed or been ready for what it calls its special military operation in Ukraine.

Aides said her remarks had been taken out of context and that Komarova supported the military.

In her resignation video, she thanked President Vladimir Putin for his trust and spoke of the efforts being made by Russian forces on the frontline.

Komarova, 68, was the only serving female governor and had been at the helm of the regional administration since 2010.

Before that, she had headed the committee on natural resources at Russia‘s State Duma lower house of parliament.

Local press has tipped the mayor of the city of Tyumen, Ruslan Kukharuk, as her successor as governor.

Ukraine cannot use Italian arms on Russian territory, Italian foreign minister says

Thursday 30 May 2024 09:30 , Tom Watling

Italy will never send any troops to Ukraine and any weapons it has supplied to Kyiv should not be used on Russian territory, Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani has said.

“All the weapons leaving from Italy (to Ukraine) should be used within Ukraine,” Tajani said in a TV interview with public broadcaster RAI.

Under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Italy has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine, but Rome has never disclosed any details about its military aid.

Tajani also dismissed the possibility that former Italian Prime Minister and European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi could become the next EU Commission President.

“Draghi is not an (official) candidate and does not belong to any (European) political family... I see it as a complicated matter,” he said.

Search-and-recovery teams have identified 19 bodies at a hardware store hit by Russian bombs last weekend in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, interior minister Ihor Klymenko said on Wednesday.

The dead in Saturday’s attack included two young people.

Mr Klymenko said: “The search for the dead was conducted round-the-clock in the ash with special equipment and they were promptly identified with the help of a DNA laboratory.”

Russia made no comment on the incident, but says it does not target civilian sites.

Russia downs eight ATACMS missiles over Sea of Azov – report

Thursday 30 May 2024 06:30 , Namita Singh

Russian air defences downed eight ATACMS missiles over the Sea of Azov and intercepted eight drones over the Black Sea near Crimea on Thursday, the TASS news agency cited its defence ministry as saying.

Earlier, a Russia-installed official in Crimea said missile debris damaged two ferries near the city of Kerch and movement on the ferry line there had been suspended.

Separately, the Russian authorities said car traffic had also been suspended on the key Crimea bridge linking the peninsula with Russia.

Ukraine’s air defence systems destroyed seven Russia-launched missiles and 32 drones overnight, its air force commander said this morning.

On the Telegram messaging app the official said Russia had launched a total of 51 missiles and drones.

Sweden to donate £962m in military aid to Ukraine

Thursday 30 May 2024 06:15 , Tom Watling

The Swedish government has said it will donate military aid to Ukraine worth £962m in the largest help package Sweden has so far donated.

“It consists of equipment that is at the top of Ukraine’s priority list,” deputy prime minister Ebba Busch said.

It includes air defence, artillery ammunition and armoured vehicles.

Sweden’s defence minister Pal Jonson reiterated that the country has ruled out for now sending any Swedish-built JAS 39 Gripen jets to Ukraine, saying the focus on the Ukrainian side is on implementing the F-16 programme.

Mr Jonson said Sweden “is still working on possibly being able to contribute with the Gripen system later”.

The donation also includes two Swedish-made SAAB ASCC airborne early warning and control airplanes, which Mr Jonson said would have the “greatest effect on the Ukrainian air defence” because they would complement and reinforce the promised donations of American F-16 fighter jets.

“You can identify incoming cruise missiles, you can identify drones and identify targets both on land and at sea,” he said.

“The overall assessment is that a donation of the ASCC 890 radar reconnaissance and command aircraft would be the most impactful for the Ukrainian Air Force right now,” Mr Jonson added.

US accuses China's leadership over Ukraine, delivers new sanctions warning

Thursday 30 May 2024 05:45 , Namita Singh

The United States has accused China’s leadership of supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine and warned that Beijing could face further sanctions in response from the United States and other Nato countries.

Speaking to reporters on a visit to Brussels, US deputy secretary of state Kurt Campbell said there was an urgent need for European and Nato countries “to send a collective message of concern to China about its actions, which we view are destabilizing in the heart of Europe.”

The Biden administration has stepped up warnings about China’s support for Russia and issued an executive order in December that threatened sanctions on financial institutions helping Russia skirt Western sanctions.

Mr Campbell said he had briefed Nato’s main political decision-making body, the North Atlantic Council (NAC), about US concerns on Tuesday.

He said Chinese support was helping Moscow reconstitute elements of its military, including long-range missile, artillery and drone capabilities, and its ability to track battlefield movements.

“What we’ve seen from China to Russia is not a one-off or a couple of rogue firms involved in supporting Russia,” Mr Campbell said. “This is a sustained, comprehensive effort that is backed up by the leadership in China that is designed to give Russia every support behind the scenes.”

Mr Campbell said the Chinese actions had created capacities for Russia not only on the battlefield in Ukraine, but to be “able to pose a strategic challenge to others in Europe.“We see this as a matter of utmost urgency,” he said.

Recovery operation ends at bombed Kharkiv store, 19 dead, minister says

Thursday 30 May 2024 05:30 , Namita Singh

Search and recovery teams have identified 19 bodies at a hardware store hit by Russian bombs last weekend in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, interior minister Ihor Klymenko said yesterday.

Mr Klymenko said on the Telegram messaging app that recovery work was now complete. The dead in Saturday’s attack included two minors.

“This was not a simple matter,” Mr Klymenko said. “The search for the dead was conducted round-the-clock in the ash with special equipment and they were promptly identified with the help of a DNA laboratory,” he said.

Dogs were deployed and residents submitted 16 requests to investigate the fate of missing relatives.

Russia made no comment on the incident, but says it does not target civilian sites in the more than two-year-old war.

Kharkiv, which withstood a Russian advance in the early weeks of the conflict, has been increasingly targeted by strikes in recent weeks. A missile attack on Saturday targeted a city centre district, with 25 people injured.

US weapons helping stabilise Ukraine's front line, Blinken says

Thursday 30 May 2024 05:15 , Namita Singh

US secretary of state Antony Blinken said that American weapons being delivered to Kyiv were helping stabilise the front line in Ukraine amid intensifying Russian attacks and that Washington would “adapt and adjust” its support.

The top US diplomat travelled to the Moldovan capital Chisinau, holding talks with pro-Western President Maia Sandu on the first stop of a brief European tour aimed at solidifying support for Kyiv among Nato allies and neighbouring countries.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has warned of the threat of a global conflict if Kyiv’s Western allies allow it to use weapons they have supplied to strike inside Russia, something Ukraine’s government is urging its partners to permit.

The US has said it does not encourage or enable the use of US weapons for direct attacks on Russia, but Mr Blinken said it would “adjust and adapt” when asked at a press conference about Washington’s current position on the matter.

“I think what you’ve seen over the two plus years, as the nature of the battlefield has changed, as the locations, the means that Russia is employing changed, we’ve adapted and adjusted to that ... That’s exactly what we’ll do going forward,” he said.

China could arrange Russia-Ukraine peace conference, Lavrov tells RIA

Thursday 30 May 2024 04:35 , Namita Singh

China could arrange a peace conference in which Russia and Ukraine would participate, the RIA news agency cited Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov as saying.

Mr Lavrov said such a move would be a continuation of Beijing’s efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.

“We share (China’s) position that the root causes of the conflict need to be addressed in the first place and legal interests of all parties need to be protected, with subsequent agreements based on the principle of equal and indivisible security,” Mr Lavrov said in an interview with the agency.

“Let me underscore again, this entails respecting realities on the ground, which reflect the will of people living there.”

China, however, is accused of providing Russia with lethal aid for use in its war against Ukraine .

British defence secretary Grant Shapps last week suggested that British and US intelligence contradicts Beijing’s previous attempts to present itself as a moderating influence on Moscow and president Xi Jinping government is instead helping to arm Russia.

Russian forces launch missiles on Kharkiv, four injured, Ukrainian officials say

Thursday 30 May 2024 04:11 , Namita Singh

Russian forces launched a series of missiles on Kharkiv today, Ukraine’s second largest city, injuring at least four people and damaging infrastructure, local officials said.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said four people had been injured, a gas pipeline had been damaged and many windows had been broken.

Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said eight missiles had been fired at the city, a frequent Russian target in recent weeks. A community just north of the city had also been hit.

In the aftermath of the strikes, air raid alerts remained in force throughout the country.

Thursday 30 May 2024 04:05 , Namita Singh

Debris from downed Ukrainian missiles aimed at a transport facility in the occupied Crimean city of Kerch damaged two ferries this morning, a Russian-appointed Crimea official said on the Telegram messaging app.

Nikolai Lukashenko, Crimea’s transport minister, said there were no casualties, but the work of the ferry line has been suspended to assess damage.

US will adjust and adapt on weapons, says Blinken

Thursday 30 May 2024 03:00 , Jane Dalton

The US has said it does not encourage or enable the use of American weapons for direct attacks on Russia, but Secretary of State Antony Blinken said it would “adjust and adapt”, when asked about Washington’s position on the matter.

“I think what you’ve seen over the two-plus years, as the nature of the battlefield has changed, as the locations, the means that Russia is employing changed, we’ve adapted and adjusted to that ... That’s exactly what we’ll do going forward,” he said.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby also noted that US support for Ukraine has evolved with battlefield conditions. “And that’s not going to change,” he told reporters in Washington. “But, right now, there’s also no change to our policy.”

France’s Macron urges green light for Ukraine to strike targets in Russia with Western weapons

Thursday 30 May 2024 02:00 , Jane Dalton

Western leaders have mostly shrunk from taking the step because it runs the risk of provoking Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has repeatedly warned that the West’s direct involvement could put the world on a path to nuclear conflict.

US pledges $135 million in aid to Western-leaning Moldova to counter Russian disinformation

Wednesday 29 May 2024 21:30 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday pledged $135 million in aid to Moldova for energy security and to counter Russian disinformation as the Western-leaning nation struggles to blunt Moscow’s push for influence that’s been buoyed by recent successes in its war in neighboring Ukraine .

Blinken opened a short visit to Eastern Europe with a stop in Chisinau, Moldova’s capital, where he announced the assistance at a news conference with President Maia Sandu. America’s top diplomat said $85 million would go to bolster energy infrastructure and $50 million was aimed at overhauling the energy and farming industries and deterring disinformation.

Sweden seeks to answer worried students' questions about NATO and war after its neutrality ends

Wednesday 29 May 2024 21:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

The teacher’s opening question to students in Stockholm is blunt: “Has joining NATO increased the threat to Sweden?”

Sweden became the Western military alliance’s 32nd member in March. The abrupt end to the Scandinavian country’s 200 years of neutrality following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and officials’ warnings about the Russian threat to Sweden itself, worry many. Teenagers are no exception.

Masai Björkwall helped design a national program to educate students on the history and geopolitics of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation after students at Viktor Rydberg Junior High School earlier this year anxiously asked if war might come to Sweden.

Russian think tank adviser suggests nuclear blast to warn West

Wednesday 29 May 2024 20:25 , Jane Dalton

A top member of a Russian think tank whose ideas sometimes become government policy has suggested Moscow consider a “demonstrative” nuclear explosion to cow the West into refusing to allow Ukraine to use its arms against targets inside Russia.

The proposal, by Dmitry Suslov, a member of the Moscow-based Council for Foreign and Defence Policy, was issued a day after president Vladimir Putin warned the West that Nato members in Europe were playing with fire by proposing to let Kyiv use Western weapons to strike deep inside Russia, something he said could trigger a global conflict.

Mr Putin has previously praised the Council for Foreign and Defence Policy.

Mr Suslov said Russia needed to act to dissuade the West from crossing a red line.

“To confirm the seriousness of Russia’s intentions and to convince our opponents of Moscow’s readiness to escalate, it is worth considering a demonstrative (ie non-combat) nuclear explosion,” he wrote in business magazine Profil .

“The political and psychological effect of a nuclear mushroom cloud, which will be shown live on all TV channels around the world, will hopefully remind Western politicians of the one thing that has prevented wars between the great powers since 1945 and that they have now largely lost - fear of nuclear war.”

Russia to build a small nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan

Wednesday 29 May 2024 19:30 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Russia and Uzbekistan signed an accord Monday for Moscow to build a small nuclear power plant in the Central Asian country, as Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks in the Uzbek capital with Uzbekistan leader Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Mirziyoyev hailed the project as “vital” in remarks after the talks, noting that Uzbekistan has “its own large reserves of uranium.” Putin, in turn, vowed to “do everything in order to work effectively on Uzbekistan’s (nuclear energy) market.”

If the agreement is implemented, the plant would become the first in Central Asia, further increasing Russia’s influence in the region.

Every Nato step to support Ukraine will help contain Russia, Czech minister says

Wednesday 29 May 2024 19:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Nato needs to send a signal that it will contain “Russian imperialism” and every move to aid Ukraine will help it do this, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky said on Wednesday, as the military alliance meets this week to discuss support for Kyiv.

Earlier this month Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged allies to step up aid and involvement in the war in an interview with Reuters, as Ukraine‘s forces come under growing pressure under along more than 1,000 km of front lines and after weapons deliveries were delayed for months by internal political wrangling.

Foreign ministers of Nato’s 32 members will gather in the Czech capital Prague on Thursday and Friday to hammer out agreements for later when NATO leaders meet in Washington in July, focusing on putting support for Ukraine on a more stable long-term footing.

“Nato is a defensive alliance. We don’t want to change anything on that. On the other hand if we want to defend Europe, we are quite open in recognising what is threatening European defence. That is, in my eyes, Russian imperialism,” Lipavsky told Reuters in an interview.

“I am calling on other states to have a common strategy to contain Russia, and definitely every step which will help Ukraine, will also help this goal.”

Belgium’s federal prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday that police carried out searches at the residence of an employee of the European Parliament and at his office in the Parliament’s building in Brussels over suspected Russian interference.

Prosecutors said in statement that the suspect’s office in Strasbourg, where the EU Parliament’s headquarters are located in France, was also searched in partnership with the EU’s judicial cooperation agency, Eurojust, and French judicial authorities.

The raids took place less than two weeks before Europe-wide polls on June 6-9 to elect a new EU parliament.

Trump suggested at fundraiser he ‘would have bombed’ Russia and China

Wednesday 29 May 2024 17:31 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Donald Trump suggested during a fundraising event that he would have bombed Moscow in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and attacked Beijing if China invaded Taiwan on his watch, according to a Washington Post report.

The comments surprised some of the donors at the event.

James Gilmore, who served as Mr Trump’s ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, told reporters in Taiwan earlier this month that Mr Trump isn’t an isolationist but that he’s simply trying to get allies to put more emphasis on their own defense.

US working to provide $50 million to Moldova to help resist Russian interference

Wednesday 29 May 2024 16:50 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday said the Biden administration was working with the US Congress to provide an additional $50 million to Moldova to advance efforts he said will help the country resist Russian interference.

Blinken, speaking at a press conference in Chisinau with Moldova’s president, said the US has seen extraordinary resilience from the country despite “bullying” from Russia, efforts to spread disinformation and weaponising corruption.

Ukraine urges allies to allow Kyiv to strike Russia with Western-supplied arms

Wednesday 29 May 2024 16:36 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Ukraine has urged its allies to allow Kyiv to use Western-supplied arms to conduct strikes inside Russia and abandon an official position some of them have held throughout Russia‘s 27-month-old full-scale invasion.

President Volodymyr Zelensky told Reuters on 20 May that talks had taken place with Kyiv’s allies about using their weapons to strike Russian military targets at the border and further inside Russia.

He said the talks had yielded “nothing positive”, but some partners have shifted their rhetoric on the matter.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Nato members on Tuesday that they were playing with fire by proposing to let Ukraine use Western weapons to strike targets inside Russia.

Russian strikes kill two civilians in Ukraine's Nikopol, governor says

Russian strikes killed two civilians in the city of Nikopol in southern Ukraine on Wednesday, regional governor Serhiy Lysak said.

Lysak said a Russian drone targeted an ambulance killing a 54-year-old driver and severely injuring his wife. Another civilian, a 52-year-old man, died in a hospital after being wounded in an artillery shelling earlier in the day, he said.

Nikopol which is located just across the river from the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, is being pounded regularly with Russian artillery fire.

Putin names ex-bodyguard Alexei Dyumin, a potential successor, to senior role

Wednesday 29 May 2024 14:26 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Alexei Dyumin, his former bodyguard, as secretary of the advisory State Council on Wednesday, a step that fuelled speculation about Dyumin’s presidential potential.

Putin was re-elected for another six-year term in March and made Dyumin, 51, an aide overseeing the defence industry in May, bringing him to Moscow and closer to the centre of power.

A decree signed by Putin appointing Dyumin to the State Council was published on the Kremlin’s website on Wednesday. It gave no further details of his new role.

“Russia‘s elite is abuzz with the appointment of Dyumin as secretary of the State Council,” Sergei Markov, a former Kremlin adviser and Putin supporter, said on Telegram.

“This is seen as confirmation that Dyumin is the future president of Russia, Putin’s choice,” Markov said, adding that this was something that had long been rumoured.

Asked about Dyumin’s appointment, the Kremlin said it was part of a rotation - he is taking over the role from Igor Levitin, 72 - and said he would look at how the State Council would function. Putin chairs the council and there has long been speculation that it could take on more importance.

Ukrainian drones can strike deep into Russia but Moscow is safe, Russian official says

Wednesday 29 May 2024 13:42 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Ukrainian drones have the capability of striking up to 2,500 kilometres (1,553 miles) into Russia, but the capital Moscow has been protected from their strikes, a senior Russian airforce official warned on Wednesday.

The statement from Dmitry Bogdanov, head of the radio-electronic warfare department of the Russian Aerospace Forces, was carried by the TASS state news agency and suggests that a wide swath of Russian territory bordering Ukraine is vulnerable to potential attack.

“The enemy is not standing still,” Bogdanov was quoted as saying.

“Now unmanned aerial vehicles can traverse an area of up to 2,500 kilometres, and many (Russian) regions are aware of this,”, Bogdanov told a security conference, TASS reported.

Bogdanov said measures had been taken to protect Moscow, the Russian capital, from Ukrainian drone attacks and that other regions were working on their defences.

Blinken heads to Moldova as tensions with Russia build

Wednesday 29 May 2024 12:15 , Tom Watling

US secretary of state Antony Blinken is flying to the Moldovan capital Chisinau today, the first stop on a brief Europe tour aimed at solidifying Western support for Ukraine across Nato allies and neighbouring countries.

The top US diplomat’s trip comes as Ukraine is trying to fend off intensifying Russian attacks in the east and President Vladimir Putin warns that allowing Kyiv to use Western weapons to strike inside Russia could trigger a global conflict.

In Chisinau, Mr Blinken will meet pro-European President Maia Sandu and other senior officials at a time when US officials say the ex-Soviet republic of 2.5 million, which has a long border with Ukraine, faces Russian “influence operations”.

Jim O’Brien, the top US diplomat for Europe at the State Department, told reporters on Friday that the United States would likely announce a “robust package” of support for Moldova’s energy independence, without elaborating.

Under Ms Sandu, Moldova has staunchly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and set its sights on joining the European Union. It has sharply reduced its dependence on Russian natural gas and is diversifying its sources of electricity supply.

Mr O’Brien added that Washington has not seen a direct military threat from Russia toward Moldova’s breakaway region of Transdniestria where Moscow has had a force of peacekeepers and soldiers on the ground since a war in the early 1990s.

Moldova, which holds a referendum in October to cement its bid to join the European Union into its constitution, is a vocal supporter of Ukraine and sees its security as closely tied to Kyiv’s ability to hold back Russian forces.
