NZeTA applicants with dual nationality must use the same passport to apply for the visa waiver and board the cruise ship.

Applying for the eTA New Zealand for a cruise

Flying into New Zealand to join a cruise

Different rules apply to travellers who will fly into New Zealand to join a cruise.

Passengers arriving by aeroplane need to apply for a visitor visa before departure if they are not from a visa waiver country.

The NZeTA can only be used to arrive by cruise , not by plane, unless the passport holder is from a visa waiver nation.

Passengers who wish to leave the cruise ship to fly home or stay on in New Zealand also need to obtain a visa and entry permission if they are not from a visa-exempt country.

When should I apply for a New Zealand visa if I’m going on a cruise?

People who need a New Zealand visa to enter the country by plane should apply several months in advance . Processing times vary depending on demand and where the application is submitted.

Citizens of visa waiver countries can fly to New Zealand and join the cruise with the NZeTA. Visa waiver applications are processed in 1 to 3 days .

Countries eligible for NZeTA for cruise

As explained above, foreigners can go to New Zealand on a cruise without a visa by applying for an NZeTA.

Tourists who will fly to New Zealand to join a cruise can travel with an eTA if they are from one of the eligible visa waiver countries .

Foreign nationals with permanent residence in Australia can apply for an NZeTA, regardless of whether their country appears within the list of eligible countries or not. However, they are exempt from paying the IVL.

Citizens who carry a passport from a non-eligible country will be required to apply for a traditional New Zealand tourist visa at a New Zealand embassy or consulate before taking a flight to New Zealand.

New Zealand Welcomes Cruise Ships Back as Borders Fully Reopen

Cruise ships can return to New Zealand after more than 2 years.

travelling to new zealand on a cruise ship

New Zealand dropped restrictions on cruise ships over the weekend, more than two years after the start of the pandemic and just months after the country started welcoming international travelers.

The decision to once again allow cruise ships, which the government outlined on Sunday, comes as part of a larger easing of border restrictions in which the country will welcome travelers from non-visa waiver countries. New Zealand first reopened to vaccinated tourists in May, including from the United States, before dropping pre-arrival testing rules for those vaccinated visitors in June.

New Zealand will continue to require that all tourists be fully vaccinated to enter.

"Today's change in border settings marks the final milestone for our reconnecting strategy," the government said in a statement. "This is great news to the tourism industry and economy as we approach spring and summer with people from the Northern hemisphere booking their winter holidays. We have heard optimistic messages from tourism operators who are ready to welcome back international visitors from all over the world."

The return of cruise ships, which comes ahead of New Zealand's popular summer tourist season of October to April, is expected to be a boost to the economy. Pre-pandemic, cruise travelers spent more than $500 million per year, the government noted.

Travelers who arrive in the country by ship will be subject to the same vaccination rules as those arriving by air, according to the government . Children 16 years old and younger are exempt.

Travelers will have to provide proof of their vaccination status to their booking agent or the operator as well as "comply with New Zealand's domestic COVID-19 requirements around mask-wearing, and testing."

The decision to ease border restrictions comes weeks after neighboring Australia dropped all pandemic-related border rules. It also follows Australia's move in April to eliminate restrictions on cruise ships into and within Australian territory.

travelling to new zealand on a cruise ship

Imagine for a moment that you are on the deck of a ship, sipping a glass of wine. You turn your head towards the water just in time to spot a pod of dolphins swimming by or flying fish, providing company in the ocean. After lingering in the sunshine for a while, it's time to head inside for a 3-course evening meal and a splash in the pool before retiring to bed.

Now, what kind of vessel are you on?

No, you are not on a standard commercial cruise ship. You are not on a packed luxury liner hopping between Caribbean islands. You are aboard a modern freighter. Hundreds of cargo ships, carrying everything from fire engines to apples, are crossing the world's oceans, and many are happy to take you along for the ride. Adventurous travelers, including the Transitions Abroad family, have been doing so for years, as have many long before us.

What Does Travel on a Cargo Ship Feel Like?

A far more intimate and relaxed experience than you might imagine! The experience on board contrasts sharply with the rough and industrial outward appearance a container ship tends to project. You will be one of a handful of passengers among a crew likely to number up to a dozen or a few more. There will be no evening cabaret shows as on a standard cruise, though you may have access to TV, video, and board games in a common area on the ship where passengers may meet the crew. You may even play cards with the crew under the night skies. You might be invited to karaoke with the sailors, and you will almost always dine alongside the captain, who is far more likely to turn up in shorts and a t-shirt than in full uniform. Some cargo ships also offer equipped exercise rooms or pools.

Here was our first taste of the wonders of sea travel. Our introduction to freighter travel was a relatively short 5-day sailing between Australia and New Zealand. We joined the French ship CMA CGM Utrillo in the busy port of Melbourne, where our luggage — including two bicycles and bags — was quickly hauled on board and into a spacious cabin by a host of cheery Filipino deckhands.

What are the Costs of Cargo Ship Travel?

Depending upon your destination (Transatlantic, Transpacific, South Seas, Worldwide, and other special combinations), your daily freighter travel costs will be about $100-$130 per day per person per day with a luggage allowance of approximately 30kg-100kg (66-220lbs) depending on the line you are taking. Generally, US dollars are the primary currency used onboard to buy soft drinks, snacks, beer, and toiletries. You can then use your credit cards at each location you disembark.

What kind of Hospitality Can You Expect on Board?

Our next surprise was how quickly we felt part of the family. Just moments after arriving, our fellow passenger (a French woman "going around the world in 80 days”) hinted that the captain was sure to throw us a welcome barbecue. “He does that for every one new,” she said with a wink. Sure enough, the next evening was spent on the back deck of the ship, feasting on grilled fish and chatting with the seamen as the sun went down.

One of our concerns before sailing was that we'd find the days long. It was just the opposite. There were three square meals a day (hearty plates of meat and vegetables for workers) and our time between eating was filled with strolls around the deck and trips up to the bridge to check our position and ask questions.

Had there ever been stowaways? Yes, once a harmless passenger was allowed to board. What about pirates? Not here, but there were off the coast of Africa. And just how much fuel did a cargo ship need? In the current era of relatively low oil prices, $60,000 U.S. a day will generally cover the trip.

Why is it a Relaxing Way to Travel?

With our curiosity temporarily curbed, we would return to our cabin for reading our books or Kindle, journal writing, and a bit of table tennis if we felt especially energetic. Far away from the hustle and bustle of life on firm land, we were truly relaxed. The experience was in complete contrast to our usual hurried airplane trips.

For Hamish Jamieson, the owner of Freighter Travel NZ and one of only a handful of travel agents in the world licensed to book tickets on cargo ships, the simplicity of being at sea is the main attraction.

“When you're sitting up the front of the bow of the ship, on your own, and all you see is the sea going past and you hear the wind and waves, you're in heaven. For me, an afternoon...sitting right on the bow, watching the world go by with my binoculars, that's my heaven,” he said.

What Kind of Flexibility is Needed for Freighter Travel?

Of course, nothing in life is all smooth sailing. While we didn't encounter any problems during our trip, we did struggle with the uncertain nature of freighter travel before we boarded. Our initial departure date jumped forward first by three days and then seemed to bounce around by 12-24 hours every time we called to check the latest news. Ours was not an uncommon experience and you must prepare yourself for flexibility.

Even ports of call are not guaranteed because on a cargo ship, freight comes first, not the passengers. If the demand is not there for a certain stop, the ship will go where the business is.

“Our trip from the USA to Europe changed three times after initial booking,” said Rebecca Hogue and Scott Drennan, then on a journey around the world without using airplanes . Their initial trip from South Carolina to Belgium was from Florida to Italy. “Had we not been flexible with our departure times and locations, things would not have worked out.”

As Mr. Jamieson is fond of telling his passengers, when you go to sea, there are two things you must pack: a sense of humor and a sense of patience.

What are the Practical Issues?

Your trip may also involve some red tape, particularly concerning U.S. stops. American citizens are not permitted, for example, to travel within their country by cargo ship, although they can make international journeys. Meanwhile, travelers to the United States must have a visa, even if they would not need one to arrive by air. Only Canadians are exempt from this rule.

Be sure to budget time and money to get vaccinations like Yellow Fever if you are going through the Suez and Panama canals. A medical certificate declaring you in generally good health is another typical requirement.

Where in the World Do You Want to Go?

The hardest part of booking your cargo ship voyage is deciding where to go. Will it be to South America and around Cape Horn? How about a 55-day round trip from California to Australia and New Zealand via Tahiti and Mexico? Mr. Jamieson offers a few more ideas and favorite voyages based on years of experience.

“For me the ultimate voyage is from Auckland, in New Zealand, to Singapore. It takes 40-45 days to sail what you can fly in just under 12 hours but it visits nearly every island in the Pacific on the way and it stops for 2-3 days. The second choice for me would be from Singapore through to Houston in Texas. It goes up through Thailand, Vietnam, half a dozen ports in China, into Japan, then straight across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal.”

With enough time and money at your disposal--round-the-world trips can take 80 to 100 days or more--there are few places a cargo ship can't reach. Voyage destinations on cargo ships can change, so the many options available will often surprise you. You need to be adventurous enough to do your research, find a specialized cargo ship travel agent (see resources below), and then get on board.

The Golden Rules of Cargo Ship Travel

  • Be prepared to make your own fun. There are seldom programmed activities aside from the odd safety drill.
  • Go before you're too old. An upper age limit of 77-80 years is not uncommon, as no doctor on board and there are often plenty of stairs.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers freighter travel.
  • Be flexible. Schedules can and do change frequently. You may need 2-3 ships to reach your destination.
  • Book in advance. Cabins are limited and the most popular routes can be sold out by ships months ahead.
  • Forget about working in exchange for your passage. Current union rules mean this is no longer permitted.
  • Take a good supply of seasickness pills. While not very common, rough weather can occur, sending tables, chairs, and your stomach flying across the room.
  • Wifi and other modern electronics are now often available on cargo ships for travelers . If connectivity is important to you, ask whether those options are accessible and free in advance.

New Zealand

Entry requirements.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in New Zealand set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the New Zealand High Commission in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering New Zealand.

Passport validity requirements

To enter New Zealand, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. If you’re travelling through another country on your way to or from New Zealand, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You do not need a visa to enter New Zealand if you are a visitor staying less than 6 months. You do need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA ).

At New Zealand border control, you will also need to show that you meet the criteria for visa-free entry:

  • proof of a return or onward ticket
  • proof that you have enough money for your stay

Check the full criteria on New Zealand Immigration .

New Zealand has strict immigration rules, particularly on employment. Visitors cannot work in New Zealand.

New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA )

If you are entering without a visa, you need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA ) before you travel. You will also need to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy when you apply.

Allow up to 72 hours for it to be processed. Your NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years.

Applying for a visa

Check the visa options and costs on New Zealand Immigration .

To extend your visa, first check your visa expiry date on the New Zealand Visa Verification Service . See further information from New Zealand Immigration on how to apply for a visa extension .

Travelling through New Zealand

You will need to get a NZeTA before you travel if you are travelling through New Zealand to another country.

In most cases, transit passengers must hold an NZeTA or transit NZeTA before travel.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s New Zealand guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of New Zealand. It is illegal to import most food products. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Some products, including wood products, golf clubs, footwear, tents, fishing equipment and items made from animal skin, can carry harmful pests or diseases. Check what items you are permitted to bring into New Zealand . If in doubt, declare items to a Biosecurity New Zealand official or dispose of them in one of the marked bins available at the airport.

If you break any of these rules you could get a fine of up to 100,000 New Zealand dollars or a prison sentence.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

The one word you absolutely definitely can not say on a cruise ship

Cruise ship in caribbean sea

Much like Macbeth in a theatre, there’s a particular word that’s forbidden on cruise ships .

Marc Sebastian, a passenger on the infamous nine-month cruise (which finishes in September) found this out to his detriment when he mentioned the no-go name.

On TikTok , where he has been documenting his experience on the Royal Caribbean Serenade of the Seas liner since it departed in December, he revealed all about the awkward moment.

Speaking about things he’d learned during his time at sea , he said: ‘Number one, you’re not supposed to talk about the Titanic .’

Marc was unaware of the unofficial rule when he started making smalltalk about the ill-fated vessel, which sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic ocean.

‘I brought up to an entire room of people having lunch that our ship is only 100 feet longer than Titanic ,’ he said in the clip. ‘Utensils dropped. Waiters gasped. It’s dead silent.’

@marcsebastianf someone get whoopi on the line girl i have some goss for her #ultimateworldcruise #worldcruise #serenadeoftheseas #cruisetok #cruise #9monthcruise #titanic ♬ original sound – Marc Sebastian

After the gaffe, Mark’s friend whispered across the table: ‘You’re not allowed to talk about the Titanic.’

‘Well, it wasn’t like that was in the f***ing handbook,’ he joked in reply. ‘Not that I read the handbook, clearly.’

His followers were just as confused, including @LadyScorpio585 who commented: ‘I knew none of these things and would definitely be talking about the Titanic.’

TikTok is going crazy over this 9 month long world cruise - here's a peek inside serenade of the seas

‘When I went on a cruise my mom told me saying Titanic was equivalent to screaming a bomb at an airport,’ said @mikaylavianna, while @saturnr1sing added: ‘Not being able to talk abt the Titanic would definitely ruin the experience for me.’

In days gone by, sailors avoided using the word ‘drown’ on a boat as it was believed to bring on the event itself, while ‘good luck’ and ‘goodbye’ were banned due to the belief it was unlucky.

There are all sorts of superstitions and rituals around seafaring, some of which have been around for hundreds of years.

One of these, which Marc mentioned in his TikTok, is that ships are given godmothers – and the designated one for the Serenade of the Seas is Whoopi Goldberg.

Plus, there’s a modern tradition on some cruises where passengers hide rubber ducks around the ship for others to find. Known as ‘ducking’, there’s no other purpose than to make people smile, but apparently hunting for the toy birds can get quite intense.

‘People are crazy about the ducks,’ said Marc.

All Aboard! The Must-See New Cruise Ships of 2024

Cruising has taken off in the last few years. It is the perfect way for couples or families to experience travel while having the whole thing planned for them. Now, with the viral 9-month cruise worldwide that has everyone captivated, more and more people want to see what cruising is all about.

I think what draws a lot of people to cruise ships is the community aspect of it. You are on a boat with a bunch of strangers who all have at least one common interest with you, which is a love of sailing. Cruises make traveling more fun and can even be more cost-effective than a land vacation.

This cruise can fit about 3,000 guests and is a very modern-looking cruise ship known as a high-end luxury cruise. It doesn’t have all the slides and party atmosphere that come with some of the others on this list and is more about serenity and relaxation.

This cruise is a great option for people who like the finer things in life and are looking to treat themselves to a wonderful cruising experience.

Teen on vacation ditches ‘pissed’ parents on caribbean island to make cruise on time.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

This teen is sunk.

A recent high school graduate ditched his tardy parents on a Caribbean island so he could make it back to their cruise ship before it departed.

Taking to Reddit this week with their written soliloquy, user ProfessionalTax7753 shared that the family decided to take a trip to sea in celebration of their teen’s 18th birthday and high school graduation.

Family drama ensued when a teen ditcher their parents to make a cruise ship on time.

Typically the family would go to all-expense-paid resorts, but the recent grad wanted a change of pace.

“I have always wanted to go on a cruise,” they wrote of the week-long trip. “I told my parents it was different and that if we went on excursions we had to follow the schedule no matter what.”

A teenager raced back to catch a cruise ship and left their family behind.

Such instructions for mom and dad were not followed.

“They would not head back to the ship when I said it was time to go. They were busy shopping and bargaining with the locals,” they added.

“I finally said that I was heading back to the ship. My mom waved me off.”

Surely enough, the Reddit user’s folks missed the ship by close to an hour and reamed out their teen for not getting the cruise to wait for them.

“I wanted to scream that they were not going to inconvenience 3,998 people because two could not understand what a schedule was.”

“They ended up having to fly to the next port from there and it was expensive. They are pissed at me for leaving them behind.”

And, now, what started as a thoughtful, nautical gesture has made waves within the family.

Comment by u/ProfessionalTax7753 from discussion in AmItheAsshole

The family had to pay a great deal to get back after missing the ship.

“I don’t know what I was supposed to do. They literally told me that they knew what they were doing,” they wrote.

“I wish I had never asked for this. They are making me miserable because I left without them.”
