More importantly however, it gives us the chance to champion the brilliant songwriting talent that Paul is. I don’t think there’s any question he is one of our most prolific musicians.

When restrictions allowed, Paul & Jacqui gave their support to the NHS staging a couple of free gigs and raising much needed funds. More importantly, just a great big thank you for the work they have done, and continue to do.

PAUL AND JACQUI’S fourth studio album  ‘MANCHESTER CALLING’  is out now and it made its way straight to number one. An album which has all the hallmarks of Paul’s beautifully bittersweet songwriting – effortlessly catchy melodies allied with an everyman’s biting exasperation at the modern world alongside some truly heartfelt love songs.

And in true Heaton & Abbott style here is the first single from it and it’s simple, catchy and simply really good – YOU AND ME .

Paul has some 15 million album sales under his belt, first came to public attention in the early 80s as front man of Hull-based indie poppers The Housemartins (the same group that spawned Norman ‘Fatboy Slim’ Cook), ‘HAPPY HOUR’ and their No 1 acapella Isley Bros cover ‘CARAVAN OF LOVE’.

In 1988 he formed The Beautiful South, who released 10 hugely successful albums and a stack of catchy, funny and memorable songs……

Jacqui was lead vocalist in The Beautiful South from 1994 to 2000 and she sang many of their signature hits including ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Perfect 10’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’ and ‘Dream A Little Dream’. Paul went on to release two further solo albums: ‘The Cross-Eyed Rambler’ and ‘Acid Country.’ Then in 2011 he wrote a musical called ‘The 8 th ’ based on the Seven Deadly Sins and asked Jacqui to sing one of the parts, and that, as they say, is where it all began for the pair.

I do have a little bit of history with TBS. Many years ago, when the band were right at the top of the tree, and charts, they played a small, intimate gig, for a handful of invited guests in a relatively small pub. I had the pleasure of hosting that evening. To say they were phenomenal would be an understatement. To see, and hear them so close was a real joy.

They have since released three acclaimed albums as a duo: ‘What Have We Become.’ ‘Wisdom, Laughter and Lines’ and ‘Crooked Calypso’ a couple of years ago. Last year Paul released a career spanning compilation of his biggest hits and more entitled ‘The Last King Of Pop’ and if ever you were looking for an album to start with, that’s the one. This was the lead single from the album – 7″ SINGLES .

So that brings us to the current album. Produced by long time collaborator John Williams who produced both Housemartins albums and the previous three  PAUL & JACQUI albums. It was recorded was recorded at Blueprint Studios in Salford, Manchester. As is Paul Heaton’s habit the lyrics were written in various locations in North Holland and Belgium while the music was composed in a hotel in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria and in Limburg An Der Lahn in Germany. He told Steve Wright on Radio Two recently about his love of writing in these places.

Paul told us……..

“I’ve lived in Manchester for 17 years now and recording an album here for the first time, was looking forward to cycling to work. That was never possible as Manchester is now being turned into a business centre for the rich, which I can’t stand.  If there’s a theme to the record, it’s anti growth, anti greed, against the continuous tearing down of old buildings and sticking up soulless offices, and the disappearance of local accents on TV, along with the creeping spread of Americanese.  So, some curmudgeonly moans, plus some hopefully uplifting love songs. Originally it was set up to be a double LP like ‘London Calling’ but alas the double album has also become a victim of time”

paul heaton and jacqui abbott tour swansea

Jacqui added….

“I’m so pleased and excited about the new album, it was wonderful to work on new songs and even more so that we did double what we have done for the last few records. It’ll be a joy to see others react to something we took such pleasure out of making”

paul heaton and jacqui abbott tour swansea

To coincide with the album release Paul, Jacqui and the band should have been out on the road by now, letting us hear this fine collection of new songs, and all the hits too. The rescheduled date will be pretty much 12 months to the day when they were originally set to get to town.

As with the previous live shows, Paul & Jacqui have kept the ticket prices to an affordable level and start at £32.90, which is pretty amazing nowadays.

PAUL HEATON & JACQUI ABBOTT  get to Swansea Arena on Saturday 26th November, and don’t forget the Special Guest is the unique and unforgettable BILLY BRAGG .

Tickets go on sale from Thursday 1st September for more details and to get yours, go here – PAUL & JACQUI .

The current album, MANCHESTER CALLING is out now and well worth adding to your collection.

Incidentally, there’s a recently released Double Deluxe version of Manchester Calling is out now. You can pick that up HERE .

Tickets for the gig are due to go on sale on Thursday, September 1, and are bound to be popular. The 12 date tour tour is reported to include some of the biggest shows they have ever performed as a duo to date and they'll be joined by Billy Bragg as a special guest.

Fans will know Paul shot to fame as front man of The Housemartins and then The Beautiful South, with hits including Happy Hour, A Little Time, Rotterdam and Perfect Ten to name just a few before launching a solo career. Jacqui was lead vocalist in The Beautiful South from 1994 to 2000 and she sang on many of their signature hits.

In 2011 Paul wrote a musical and asked Jacqui to sing one of the parts - they have since released four acclaimed albums as a duo. A new album is set for release on October 7. 2022 saw him celebrate his 60th birthday and to mark the occasion, he put £1,000 behind the bar of 60 carefully chosen pubs across the UK and Ireland so that fans could have a drink on him. The list included The Half Moon and Craft Pint on Northgate, Darlington where drinkers belted out a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday last May.

The new 12 date autumn tour starts on November 26 in Swansea and includes shows at The 02 in London, Manchester AO Arena and Sheffield Utilita Arena. The date at Stockton's Globe has been set for Saturday, December 3. Tickets are £30 and will be available from 9.30am on Thursday September 1 at www.stocktonglobe.co.uk and here .

Thoughtful contemporary pop from Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott, ex-The Beautiful South.

Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott have announced an autumn UK tour playing some of the biggest shows they have ever done as a duo. They will be joined by very special guest Billy Bragg.

Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott's new album 'N.K-Pop' is released on 7th October. They have already made two songs available from the album - the poignant ballad 'Still', which was described as 'beautifully heartbreaking' by Dawn French, and the gospel pop song 'Too Much For One (Not Enough For Two). Paul & Jacqui's previous album 'Manchester Calling' went straight to No 1 on its release in March '20.

Paul Heaton's songwriting genius was recognised at the prestigious Ivor Awards 2022 where noted author/radio DJ Stuart Maconie presented him with a long overdue gong for 'Outstanding Song Collection'. Heaton is one of the UK's most successful songwriters with some 15 million album sales under his belt. He first came to prominence in the early 80s as front man of The Housemartins (the same group that gave us Norman 'Fatboy Slim' Cook). The Housemartins released two albums 'London 0 Hull 4' ('86) and 'The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death' ('87). In '88 Heaton formed The Beautiful South, who released 10 hugely successful albums - 'Welcome To The Beautiful South' ('89), Choke ('90), '0898 Beautiful South' ('92), 'Miaow' ('94), 'Blue Is The Colour' ('96), 'Quench' ('98), 'Painting It Red' (2000), 'Gaze' ('03), 'Golddiggas, Headnodders & Pholk Songs' ('04) and 'Superbi' ('06). In 2001 Heaton took a break from The Beautiful South and released his first solo album 'Fat Chance'. The Beautiful South called it a day in 2007 citing 'musical similarities'. Jacqui Abbott was lead vocalist in The Beautiful South from '94 to 2000 and she sang many of their signature hits including 'Rotterdam', 'Perfect 10', 'Don't Marry Her' and 'Dream A Little Dream'. Paul Heaton went on to release two further solo albums: 'The Cross-Eyed Rambler' ('08) and 'Acid Country' ('10). In 2011 Heaton wrote a musical called 'The 8th' based on the Seven Deadly Sins and asked Jacqui to sing one of the parts. They have since released four acclaimed albums as a duo: 'What Have We Become' ('14), 'Wisdom, Laughter and Lines' ('15), 'Crooked Calypso' ('17) and 'Manchester Calling' ('20). In 2019 Paul released a career spanning compilation of his biggest hits entitled 'The Last King Of Pop'.

2022 saw Heaton reach a significant birthday, which he celebrated in typically idiosyncratic style by putting £1,000 behind the bar of 60 carefully chosen pubs across the UK and Ireland so that fans could have a drink on him.

How do you capture the essence of lockdown without making an album that screams ‘lockdown record’ from every note? And how do you subsequently make it sound like a celebratory shindig while exploring the underlying emotional impact? On a typically excellent romp that smuggles wise life lessons, gallows humour and plenty of acerbic barbs into a series of literate pop-rock gems, former Beautiful South duo Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott have done just that.

paul heaton and jacqui abbott tour swansea

Whether it’s death’s sweet sting, relationship minutiae, becoming extricated from your confidence or cutting an unhealthy cord, his personal tales, which also touch on scurrilous rogues who manipulate to cause division, would be timeless and resonant without the backdrop of Covid isolation and misinformation.

The Good Times, which seesaws giddily from Elvis Costello cool into goofy Madness quirkiness, finds a pub landlord feeling guilty about introducing his wife to the addiction that finally killed her, while listening to ghostly former proprietors of his establishment air their marital woes.

Sunny Side Up, meanwhile, mimics a ‘60s espionage movie score before becoming a deceptively sweet jingle that castigates The Telegraph and The Sun newspapers, along with those Eton boys, for inciting racism and classism.

Elsewhere, the drily self-deprecating I Drove Her Away reveals how the narrator’s constant blubbing repelled his partner and Still, which sees Heaton delivering the most poignant, tender and important message of his career, discusses the silent, lingering pain of losing a child.

As ever, those relatable kitchen sink dramas are played out over ebullient, hook-drenched music that acts as a sonic answer to the songwriter’s razor sharp lines and observational brilliance. Thanks to guitarist Johnny Lexus and producer John Williams, whose gold standard piano sounds constantly leap out of the beaming mix, these contagious cuts will make you yearn to hug or cry on the shoulder of a complete stranger for some much needed human touch.

Integrating everything from shuffling acoustic folk, proud trumpet bursts and cinematic strings to delicious rockabilly grooves and jazzy saxophone, Heaton and co seamlessly switch styles from song to song and moment to moment. I Ain’t Going Nowhere starts like a silent film soundtrack, as we follow an old guy bemoaning his inability to wanderlust, before morphing into a spunky country trot and climaxing with half-time blues and howling harmonica.

On the flip side of separation lies unity, and Heaton and Abbott were simply born to make music together. Although he writes the songs, and delivers some outstanding vocal performances, she’s the secret sauce that brings endearing back and forths like Baby It’s Cold Inside and You’re Too Much For One (Not Enough For Two) to life with soul, sass, wit, pathos and take-no-prisoners brush offs.

It might not match ‘Manchester Calling’ for adventurous musical flair, but ‘N.K Pop’ thematically trumps that effort while delivering a dozen painfully familiar stories that, in spite of the subject matter, are so reassuring they’ll make you feel more connected to yourself and a life that’s beautifully messy for everyone.

2022 saw Heaton reach a significant birthday, which he celebrated in typically idiosyncratic style by putting £1,000 behind the bar of 60 carefully chosen pubs across the UK and Ireland so that fans could have a drink on him.

Rescheduled Tour Dates

It is with great frustration that we must once again announce the rescheduling of our UK & Ireland tour dates. We had hoped to be in a position to play these shows in the Autumn but due to the ongoing situation with venue safety in the UK & Ireland, it’s become clear that to do so would be putting our fans in danger.

We’re now moving the tour to April & May 2021 and all of your tickets will remain valid for these new dates.

We‘re very sorry for any inconvenience caused by this but can’t wait to see and perform for you all at the new dates.

Who is Jacqui Abbott? Singer pulls out of Paul Heaton tour for medical reasons

paul heaton and jacqui abbott tour swansea

Jacqui Abbott and Paul Heaton have been performing across the UK after the success of their latest album N.K. Pop, which reached No 1 in the charts.

The pair performed at the Totally Wicked Stadium recently with a string of other performances announced, including a gig at Manchester’s AO Arena on Saturday December 10.

Due to an illness, however, Ms Abbott will be pulling out from the gigs at Bridlington, Glasgow and Stockton following medical advice.

Who is Ms Abbott and what is her suspected illness?

Abbott and The Beautiful South

Ms Abbott, 49, is a singer and became the vocalist for The Beautiful South after Briana Corrigan left the group in 1994.

She joined the band after a chance encounter with Mr Heaton – co-founder of the band – outside a nightculb in 1992.

She sang a few lines of a song she liked to him and he was blown away by her talent. A couple of years later, he came looking for her and invited her to audition for the band.

She performed with the group for seven years, producing a string of hits and extensive touring around the world.

Ms Abbott left the band in 2000 shortly after her son was diagnosed with autism, deciding to step back and focus on her family.

In 2011, Mr Heaton reached out to her again and they reunited on the stage, forming Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott.

Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott collaboration

Ms Abbott contributed to the band’s albums with hit songs including Rotterdam (or Anywhere), Perfect 10, Don’t Marry Her and Dream a Little Dream of Me.

The duo collaborated on a number of albums including What Have We Become, Wisdom Laughter and Lines, Crooked Calypso and their No 1 album; Manchester Calling.

Manchester Calling was the pair’s fourth studio album and was released on March 6, 2020.

As for Ms Abbott’s illness and reason for her recent decision to pull out from three gigs, she has not yet explained what it may be as of yet.
