Do keep in mind however, that some trackers will only send tracking data in specific countries since they use cellular data. The OBD plug-in GPS device costs around $90 and comes with a one-year basic plan subscription (and a one-time activation fee of $40). Yearly renewal costs are about $79, which works out to around $6.58 a month. That's a steal!

We don't like that the default refresh time is three minutes—the fastest refresh time (15 seconds) is available only for an added fee. The user interface is also a little tricky to manage.

We also like the daily driving report card on the mobile app, but metrics can be confusing. Speed limits aren't always accurate on Google Maps, so MOTOsafety might say you're speeding even when you're not.

3. Bouncie: Best for vehicle maintenance

Bouncie is new to the GPS tracking game, but it has all the best parts of other popular trackers like smart assistant compatibility. So. we expect to see it rising to the top.

Bouncie plugs into your car's OBD port and offers standard geofencing and real-time alerts for speed, hard braking, and acceleration. It also helps you keep tabs on gas levels, vehicle maintenance, and routine car-related tasks, like annual emissions inspections.

We like that you can use your Amazon Echo to check the gas in your car or ask when your registration is due.

The device also tracks your mileage and stores the data, which is a great feature if you need to track mileage for business purposes.

Bouncie charges just $9 a month for its tracking services. It's a close second to Vyncs when it comes to pricing but without the long-term commitment. If you want to track three vehicles, you'll get a special discounted rate of $7.70 per device per month

The only downsides to this device were the green flashing light that never seems to go off (black electrical tape to the rescue) and some occasional glitches with the Alexa commands.

The two-inch SpyTec GL300 GPS Tracker is small enough to be tucked into a pocket or attached to the undercarriage of your vehicle. 

This tracking device is battery-powered, so you'll need to charge it periodically. The manufacturer claims a two-week battery life, but it's more like eight to ten days.

Monitoring will cost you between $14.95 and $29.95  a month (depending on whether you choose an annual or three-month plan), and you'll get location updates only every 60 seconds unless you pay more for fastera tracking. There are no contracts or cancellation fees, and we like that SpyTec offers a 30-day, no-hassle cancellation policy.

5. Kayo Simple GPS Tracker

The Kayo Simple GPS Tracker is a close cousin to the SpyTec. Both are small, battery-operated vehicle tracking devices, but the Optimus is slightly bigger. The Kayo has better battery life, and the monthly fees are only $5/vehicle a month.

We found the location tracking to be more of a connect-the-dots experience rather than the fluid turn-by-turn that you see from other apps, but you can get real-time tracking for only $5/vehicle per month.  

Unlike SpyTec's website-only tracking, the Kayo uses an easy-to-use app.

The Vivint Car Guard is a GPS tracker, vehicle maintenance tracker, diagnostic tool, driver performance tracker, and a security device rolled into one.

At $200, it's an expensive upfront purchase, but you'll have an incredible amount of data at your fingertips through the Vivint app . 

You don't have to purchase a Vivint home security system to use the Vivint car guard. But if you  do  have a full Vivint system, you can set up some cool home automations in which the car guard communicates with your smart garage door opener, smart lights, or smart door locks based on vehicle proximity.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to purchase a car GPS tracking device, it's important to make sure you're staying within your legal rights. In most places, as long as you are putting the device only on vehicles you own, you're safe. If you want to track a loved one out of genuine concern for their safety and well-being, the best approach is to talk to them about it first.

To make your vehicle even safer, consider other devices such as dash cams and rearview (backup) cameras . These devices can improve your viewing angle and keep a valuable record of your time on the road.

When you’re in an area with a lot of buildings, your GPS tracker’s signal can bounce off different surfaces and cause false alerts. It can be annoying and worrisome to get an alert in the middle of the night telling you your car has moved from the garage, Still, it’s not uncommon for this to happen with GPS trackers.

If the alert shows that the car has just moved a short distance, like down the street, it’s usually a false alarm.

A GPS tracker for a car is either freestanding or designed to plug into the OBD-II port.

A freestanding car GPS tracker can be put anywhere in or under the vehicle.

A plug-in GPS vehicle tracking system attaches to a special port called the OBD-II ("on board diagnostic") on the driver's side, typically under the steering wheel and slightly to the left. You may need to remove the plastic dash cover to access the OBD port.

Will my GPS tracker still work in rural areas?

If you live in an area where cell service is spotty, then you’ll likely experience some spotty GPS coverage as well.

This doesn’t mean the GPS isn’t working. It just means it’s unable to get the location information to your phone because there aren’t enough cellular towers around to send the signal.

Will my GPS tracker work outside the United States?

It depends on the device you buy. Most of the devices we studied were for US use only, but a few worked outside the US in Canada and Mexico.

This tracker fits into your car’s OBD port, but you might need the extra (£9) extension cable too, because it’s quite chunky to install. It’ll alert you when your car is started or exceeds a pre-set speed limit, and offers simple location and journey tracking. The app is the best here for ease of use and functionality. If the monthly fee were lower, it would have received five stars.

The Shield GPS requires a separate SIM card, but once you’ve prised the device open and slotted the card in, it’s easy to get working. The app has journey tracking and live location features, plus it allows you to set speed alerts and geofence certain areas. The device is a great price and the monthly fee is reasonable – especially if you pay annually, which gives you a discount.

4.  iTrack FS100

This uses the same hardware as the TruTrak and offers many of the same features, including a useful app with full tracking information, geofencing features, speed alerts and more. Set-up is straightforward, and because the device is connected to the car’s 12V battery, it doesn’t need recharging and is hidden away out of sight. Only the high purchase price lets it down.

5.  Amatrac AM-T22

There’s no subscription to the Amatrac; you just have to pay for a SIM card so it can send and receive data. Set-up was fraught; it took a while to link it with the SIM card, and there’s no customer service phone number – only an email address. The app shows journey history and has a ‘get route to this device’ option, as well as live location. It needs to be charged up every 90 days, though, or more frequently than that if you use the live tracking mode, rather than the lower-energy mode that records your location every few minutes.

This tracker comes with a SIM pre-installed if you buy it off the shelf, so it’s easy to get up and running. There’s no monthly contract, but it must be topped up with at least £10 every 120 days to keep it active. It’s quite basic; it just gives a live location via text message when you ask for it, but you can get extra functions if you’re willing to pay more. It needs to be charged every month or so, unless you attach it to your 12V battery with the supplied cables.

The Curve is an affordable and small tracker that comes with its own app and a free keyring attachment. It looks cool, but it only shows live location – not journey history – and there’s no geofencing or speed data. Not only that but it has to be charged every week – a real inconvenience if you want to keep it in your car. Ultimately, it’s well worth considering as a tracker for your pet or other personal items, but it’s not as ideal as a vehicle tracker.

Models like the Garmin Overlander are purpose-built for outdoor activities like off-roading and hiking, and come with extensive weather sealing. Most GPS devices provide national map data right out of the box, and some models, such as the TomTom GO Supreme , contain full international map information as well.

Although they can be used without updates, most of these devices are able to download new map data to maintain accurate directions, usually through a cable tethered to your PC or a Wi-Fi connection. GPS units with smartphone compatibility can also be used as a hands-free receiver to easily take calls on the road.

Below, we've outlined a few other important points to think about before buying.

Screen Size and Resolution

One of the first things to consider while picking out a car GPS navigator is screen size and resolution. A larger high-resolution screen can make information more legible, but it can also take up extra space around your car’s dashboard. Most screens available are about five or six inches across, but the Garmin DriveSmart 86 boasts an eight-inch screen for greater clarity. A larger screen may also make it easier to access onscreen touch menus.

Installation

Most car GPS navigators mount to the windshield of the vehicle using a simple suction cup arm. However, depending on the size of your dashboard and personal preferences, it may be worth springing for a third-party mount to increase reach and functionality. There are also devices with magnetic suction cups for a stronger mount.

Charging and Battery Life

Suction-mounted devices feature a built-in battery, which can be charged using your vehicle’s 12V outlet. If you plan to take the GPS with you outside of the vehicle, battery life may be a concern. Car GPS navigators hold a charge from roughly 30 minutes to three hours. For durations longer than that, handheld survival GPS devices demand much lower power consumption.

Extra Features

Pricier GPS devices may add bonus features like lifetime map updates, real-time traffic data, and integrated media apps. Some include access to databases with restaurant and hotel recommendations and points of interest, which is a nice extra if you're on a road trip.

Garmin DriveSmart 65 GPS Navigator

The DriveSmart 65 is the best car GPS navigator for most people, with a high-res large screen, built-in Wi-Fi for free map and location data uploads, and Bluetooth to pair the device with your smartphone. It also punches above its price point with features like a pre-loaded National Parks directory and hotel and restaurant reviews from TripAdvisor.

Thanks to its seven-inch screen and user-friendly onscreen menus, it's easy to quickly find and switch up what you need to look at any given moment.

The driver alerts and voice commands are a big plus so you can keep your eyes on the road. Hands-free calling and hearing your text messages read aloud also helps you drive safety.

The device is ready-to-use out of the box, too, with an included traffic cable. Live traffic updates are available once your smartphone is connected.

Garmin DriveSmart 86 Car GPS Navigator

This premium Garmin device includes an extensive set of features, the most obvious being its high-res eight-inch screen. It also has Alexa built in and two USB ports for charging devices.

Beyond all that, the DriveSmart 86 goes head-to-head with the DriveSmart 65 for features. That includes built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for smartphone pairing, a database of restaurant and hotel recommendations from TripAdvisor, and maps for National Parks and other points of interest. Driver alerts, live traffic and weather information, and free software updates as part of the package.

If screen size is a priority and you want access to a voice assistant, consider the $100 upgrade well spent.

Garmin Drive 52 and Traffic GPS Navigator

For about $70 bucks less than our top pick, this Garmin car GPS navigator is worth a look. It has many of the same bells and whistles, including hotel and restaurant recommendations from TripAdvisor, and point-of-interest. You even get the DriveSmart 65's bright high-res display, easy-access onscreen menus, and driver alerts so you can focus on the road.

What you don't get with this model is built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to pair with your smartphone. Also, the screen size is slightly smaller at five inches and the battery life is a measly 30 minutes, so you'll definitely want to keep it plugged in.

Still, if you're currently using a smartphone to navigate, this device is a great investment.

TomTom Go Supreme 6-Inch GPS Navigation Device

This TomTom GPS is great for international travelers because it includes not only North American map data, but data for the entire globe. The user can also update these maps using a built-in Wi-Fi antenna to maintain accuracy and get real-time traffic data. The six-inch screen is on the smaller side for this price range, but it also gives a decent two hours of battery life per charge.

Garmin Overlander Multipurpose GPS Navigator

The Overlander is built for off-roading, and comes in a durable, dust-proof casing. The GPS contains North American map data for not only roads, but for popular off-road routes as well. Additional maps can be downloaded over Wi-Fi, and installed on up to 64 GB of internal storage.

Using built-in gyroscopes, the device also keeps track of vehicle pitch and yaw angles. Battery life is up to three hours, giving the user enough time to bring the GPS along during hikes on-foot. The seven-inch screen sticks to a windshield using a magnetically-mounted suction cup arm, but compatible ram mounts can be purchased separately that allow the Overlander to be attached to things like ATV roll cages or motorcycle handlebars.

AAA forecasts nearly 44M travelers for Memorial Day weekend: See best times to travel

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, which means people will be flooding highways and airports this weekend looking to get away for some rest and relaxation.

The American Automobile Association is projecting nearly 44 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which is defined by the organization as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a news release. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."

The organization projects over 38 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, over 3.5 million will travel by air and nearly 2 million will travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises and trains.

The 38 million drivers is the highest number for Memorial Day since AAA began tracking data in 2000 and is up 4% compared to last year. The 3.5 million air travelers is an increase of nearly 5% over last year and, according to AAA, this will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005.

Drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters, AAA said, citing data from transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Drivers going back home Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, in the news release.

Gas prices continue to decrease heading into Memorial Day weekend

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gasoline has fallen four cents since last week, to $3.60. The primary reasons are weak domestic demand and oil costs below $80 a barrel, according to the organization.

“Barring some unforeseen event, this pokey drop in pump prices is not likely to change anytime soon,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in a news release. “There are seven states with county gas averages at less than $3 a gallon. This trend will likely accelerate as more gas outlets east of the Rockies drop their prices.”

This Memorial Day weekend, drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was about $3.57.

"Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks," AAA said in the news release, while also noting that prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway.

The wildcard remains the cost of oil, according to the organization, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

What to Do If Your Car Catches Fire

Although less of a risk than decades ago, vehicle fires are still common enough to be a risk

Imagine you’re driving down the road and suddenly smell smoke or see flames shoot from under the hood or dash. What should you do? Read on for Consumer Reports’ advice on how to stay safe if your car catches on fire. 

You may have seen news reports about recalls and investigations into models affected by fire risk. For example, thousands of Hyundai and Kia vehicles have caught fire since 2010, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and there have been well-publicized recalls involving other models, some of which are equipped with lithium-ion batteries. And how many of us have seen videos or photos posted online depicting a Tesla EV engulfed in flames . (To be fair, not a lot of data exists yet regarding frequency of fires in gasoline-powered cars versus those powered by battery-only and hybrid powertrains, so it’s unclear which type is more common, although battery fires tend to last longer and take more water to put out.)

Although they are not all that common in the grand scheme of things and have decreased by 60 percent since 1980, vehicle fires are still a very real possibility. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 16 percent of fire deaths in 2022 (the most recent year for which data was available) were caused by vehicle fires. And with the average age of vehicles on the road creeping up each year, NFPA points out that vehicle fires from mechanical and electrical malfunctions become more of a risk.

The truth is, vehicle fires are a frequent enough occurrence in this country to warrant serious thought by motorists, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. There were an estimated 171,500 highway vehicle fires in the U.S. each year from 2014 through 2016, the last year for which data is available. A vast majority—more than 142,000—were fires involving passenger vehicles, FEMA says. That’s an average of just under 400 fires per day. 

Counting all highway vehicle fires, there were an average of 345 deaths, 1,300 injuries, and about $1.1 billion in damage each year from 2014 to 2016, according to FEMA. And data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) shows that collisions were a contributing factor in only about 5 percent of highway vehicle fires, although they were responsible for 60 percent of the fatalities in such fires. Mechanical failure or malfunction was cited in 45 percent of vehicle fires from 2014 to 2016, and electrical problems played a role in more than 1 in 5 fires.

If you want a fire extinguisher to keep in your garage or car, buy only extinguishers that have been listed or certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as UL, ETL, CSA, and FM Approvals. You’ll notice letters on the extinguishers, which indicate the type(s) of fires they can handle. Class A are designed to put out rubbish, wood, and paper fires; Class B are for oil and grease fires; and Class C are for electrical fires. Class ABC models work on all the fires above.

No matter which fire extinguisher you buy, make sure its pressure indicator shows "full" and that it was manufactured within the last year.  The National Fire Protection Association  recommends that dry chemical extinguishers that are intended to be discarded after use should be disposed of 12 years after the date of manufacture.

Vehicle fires can spread rapidly, so you need to respond quickly:

• Pull over as soon as you can and shut off the car . This stops the flow of fuel in gasoline-powered cars and shuts down the powertrain and accessories in EVs.
• Get yourself and your passengers out of the car as quickly as possible. NFPA recommends staying at least 100 feet away from the car. It’s also a good idea to stay upwind of the burning car if possible to avoid inhaling toxic smoke and to stay out of the path of the potential spread of wind-driven fire.
• Call 911 or have another motorist make the call to get emergency services on their way as soon as possible.
• Attempt to put out the fire only if you have clear access to the source from outside the car, have a suitable fire extinguisher, know how to use it correctly, and can maintain a safe distance away from the car. Only use an extinguisher approved for Class B or Class C fires; a label on the extinguisher will identify which kind of fire it’s suitable for. Unless the fire is small and localized to a specific part of the car, avoid it. Wait for the professionals to arrive if the car is engulfed in flames.
• Never open the hood or trunk if you suspect there’s a fire there; the additional air flowing in could cause the fire to enlarge.
• Be aware of your surroundings. Never stand on an active roadway. If you’re parked by the side of the road, stay far behind the vehicle to avoid being hit if another car strikes your vehicle.

How to Avoid a Car Fire

You can take steps to make sure your car doesn’t catch fire in the first place:

• Have your car serviced regularly by a professional mechanic, says John Ibbotson, chief mechanic for CR. If you spot leaks or your car isn’t running properly, get it checked. A well-maintained car is less likely to have a fire. Become familiar with oil levels and engine temperatures during normal operation of your car. 
• If you must transport gasoline, carry only a small amount in a certified gas can that’s sealed, the NFPA suggests. Keep a window open for ventilation.
• Gas cans and propane cylinders should never be transported in the passenger compartment, the NFPA says.
• Never park a car where flammables, such as grass, are touching the catalytic converter, which can reach temperatures above 1,000° F.
• Follow manufacturer recommendations for EV and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) charging, and only use a charger certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
• Install a residual current device with your EV charger. It will shut off the power if it detects an electrical fault.
• Never plug a Level 1 charger (the 110-volt cord that comes with most EVs and PHEVs) into an extension cord or multi-outlet adapter.

The NFPA says to look for danger signs that a fire could be possible down the road:

• Beware of the smell of burning rubber or plastic.
• Check for cracked or loose wiring or electrical problems, including a fuse that blows more than once.
• Check for oil or fluid leaks.
• Make sure the oil cap is securely tightened.
• Watch for rapid changes in fuel or oil levels or notable increases in engine temperature.
