Disney Cruise Upgrade at Port: Getting an Even Better Room

concierge sun deck on disney magic

Are you looking for a trick on how to get Disney cruise upgrades at port?

Maybe you want to try sailing in the Concierge Level, but you don’t want to pay the full price.

Sometimes you can really luck out at the port by scoring a Disney cruise upgrade for your trip.

In this post, I will walk you through the steps of upgrading at the port when cruising with Disney . If available, this allows you to get a super nice stateroom for a really great discount!

Disney Cruise Rooms

First, you should always book a stateroom that is comfortable for your family. For example, don’t book a stateroom on Deck 1 if you don’t want to be on a lower level.

You will be kicking yourself once you get to the port, and you find that upgrades aren’t available. Then you will be stuck with a Deck 1 room that you never wanted in the first place.

picture of cabin on Disney Magic with text overlay How to Upgrade Your Disney Cruise Stateroom

This brings me to a very important point- Disney Cruise Line does NOT always have upgrades available at the port .

So, when booking your Disney cruise, choose a room that you KNOW your whole family will like because you are not guaranteed to find any last minute deals.

I recently returned from a cruise on the Disney Magic where my family upgraded to Concierge at the port. On this cruise, I sailed with my husband and our two daughters (who were 6 and 18 months old).

Disney Cruise Upgrades

We initially booked a Deluxe Inside Stateroom on Deck 2 for this trip. When pricing out our stateroom options, I chose not to book a room with a verandah because the price was significantly more.

Concierge Stateroom on the Disney Magic

Obviously pricing is subjective based on circumstances, but it was over a thousand dollars more for a balcony. We decided it wasn’t worth it for this trip.

Disney Cruise Line had rooms with portholes available for a few hundred dollars more than our inside stateroom.

However, these cabins didn’t offer any additional space in the room. So, we decided to just stick with our Deluxe Inside Stateroom.

Disney Magic Cruise Ship at Castaway Cay

At least, that was the plan until we traveled with our toddler a few weeks prior to our trip. Our younger daughter, who isn’t the greatest sleeper at home, was even worse on our trip.

She woke up at random times throughout the night and was also up at the crack of dawn each day. Right before our cruise, my husband and I decided that a stateroom with a verandah would be super useful!

This way, our toddler could sit and play on the balcony (with an adult of course) at 5 AM rather than waking up our six year old.

However, because we still weren’t sold on spending an extra thousand dollars for a verandah, my husband and I reluctantly chose to just keep our Inside Stateroom.

Disney Magic Pool Deck

Instead, I kept an eye on the Disney Cruise Line website leading up to our cruise and continued to see a lot of rooms with balconies available.

Many times, Disney cruises sell out, but this wasn’t the case with our off-season trip on the Magic.

Still, we didn’t want to get our hopes up that we would be able to upgrade our room at the port.

Can You Ask for an Upgrade on a Cruise Ship

The first day of your cruise is known as embarkation day . This is the day when you arrive at the cruise terminal, check in, and board the ship.

On embarkation day, a Disney Cruise Line employee will check you in at a counter in the terminal. This process is very similar to the one at the airport.

It is at this check in counter where I inquired about a room upgrade. Once the cast member finished checking in my family and giving us our Key Cards, I asked if there were any upgrades available.

To my delight (and relief), she responded that they did have some upgrades available. She walked my family over to the supervisor’s counter. This counter was located right beside the Concierge check in counter.

Gold Key to the World Card

The supervisor informed us that she had a Concierge Stateroom available. This room included a verandah, which is what we REALLY wanted.

Since the stateroom was classified as Concierge, it also came with a price that was more than we really wanted to spend.

Port Upgrade Chart

The supervisor used a price chart to show her what my family needed to pay to upgrade our room.

Since we had originally booked one of the cheapest rooms on the ship, we needed to pay a lot more to make up the difference for the Concierge price.

(If you already had a room with a verandah booked, the price difference probably wouldn’t be that significant.)

Even though this Concierge room was priced quite a bit higher than what we had paid for our original room, it was HIGHLY discounted.

Disney Cruise Planner

Since I had been watching the room prices for our cruise on the DCL website, I was aware of the normal price for these rooms. It would have cost more than $4000 to change to a Concierge room BEFORE our trip.

The price to upgrade at the port was less than half of that!

Still, we really just wanted a balcony in our room. We weren’t totally sure we needed all of the perks that came with Concierge. We initially turned it down because we didn’t want to spend the extra money.

Disney Magic Mickey Statue In Atrium

But……after discussing it further, my husband and I agreed that we would probably never get the chance to cruise Concierge at more than 50% off again…So, we upgraded!

This way we got our balcony AND the experience of cruising Concierge!

Upgrade at Port

I wanted to make sure to mention a couple important things about upgrading your room at the port. Disney Cruise Line did a wonderful job of immediately updating our account with our new stateroom number.

In fact, the Concierge staff seemed to know all about us right after we switched to Concierge level. Our luggage, on the other hand, did not get the memo. Our luggage tags had our original stateroom number listed on them.

Pelican Plunge Water Slide on Castaway Cay

Because of this, they were delivered to the Inside Stateroom we had initially booked. This was easily fixed by our room host. Once I noticed luggage appearing in the hallway of other rooms, I mentioned our upgrade to our room host.

Within minutes, he was on the phone and had located our bags. They were then immediately brought to our room. In addition, our Castaway Club gift did not get put in our new stateroom. Instead, this backpack was waiting for us in our original room.

Again, this was quickly taken care of by Disney. I just wanted to mention that for those who may choose to do the room gifts or decorations. If you upgrade at the port, your room decorations may not immediately follow you there.

Final Thoughts on Disney Cruise Upgrades

I really don’t like making huge decisions in the spur of the moment, especially when finances are involved. Because of this, I was worried we would end up regretting our decision to upgrade our room to Concierge at the port.

Luckily, we all ended up being really happy with our decision. The verandah was a huge help throughout our five day trip, and we used it a ton!

25 Best Disney Cruise Tips for First Timers

25 Best Disney Cruise Tips for First Timers

Is it better to get there earlier if you are hoping to get an upgrade? I noticed the ship we are sailing in October has many rooms available right now, so hoping to get an upgrade.

Hi Michelle,

I think it helps to get to the port early when you’re wanting to ask about an upgrade. I know people have scored an upgrade later in the day, but if you’re wanting first dibs on what is available, you’ll want to ask as soon as possible.

We upgraded from a Navigators Verandah room to a Family Veranduh for just $200 more last October. Having the extra space for the playpen was totally worth it!! I’m checking now for our next cruise and its $1k to upgrade. Hoping to get the same deal at the port next time!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! $200 sounds like a great price for the extra square footage. We love the family verandah rooms! Hope you get lucky on your port upgrades on the next cruise! 🙂

Was there an option to upgrade to just a verandah room or only concierge?

Hi Courtney,

Yes, the cast member will give you prices for a stateroom with a verandah if one is available for an upgrade. Hope you have a great trip!

Hi, I am going on the Magic in January and hope to upgrade at port. You picture shows concierge bar is open 5pm-10pm. Are drinks free that entire time- or only certain hours?

During our sailing, the Concierge bar served free drinks during the whole 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm time slot. I’m not sure if it’s unlimited free drinks, but we were able to grab wine to take to dinner with us. After dinner, we got a second drink to take to the show. Hope that helps! Enjoy the Disney Magic!

Seven Things That Cost Extra on Disney Cruise Line (and How to Avoid Those Costs)

When you plan a Disney Cruise Line voyage, it’s possible to experience the entirety of your sailing for very close to the price you paid when booking. Your cruise price includes your stateroom accommodations, lots of food, lots of entertainment, and even childcare for most ages. But it wouldn’t be Disney if they’re weren’t many (many, many, many) opportunities to “plus up” you vacation – adding extras to make your trip fancier, flashier, or more indulgent. But it’s more than possible to have a fabulous Disney Cruise vacation without spending extra on any of these embellishments.

Here are seven things that cost extra on Disney Cruise Line – and ways to circumvent those cost if you want to keep your budget in check.

1. Alcohol.

You will be presented with opportunities to imbibe at every turn: beer stands by the pool deck, wine packages at dinner, bars in the main thoroughfares, tasting classes, roaming bartenders on the beach at Castaway Cay. Beers starts at about $7 per serving, glasses of wine start at about $8, and cocktails start at about $10 – with prices rising to multiples of this for special pours.

There is no imperative to drink, plenty of teetotalers cruise every day. But if you do want to partake and also want to keep your budget in check, feel free to bring your own booze on board. Each adult (21+) may bring up to 2 bottles of unopened wine or champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or 6 beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage AND at each port of call. These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) luggage.

There are a few rules about where you can consume your personal alcohol on the ship, but if you plan to drink a fair amount, you can reap substantial savings by bringing your own.

2. Shore excursions.

Shore excursions (in Disney-speak, port adventures) are planned activities off the ship. In various ports, these might include cultural exploration like museum tours, animal experiences like dolphins encounters, sporty activities like hiking or kayaking, or more. These are nice, but can add anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, per person, per excursion, depending on the activity.

To save money, you have two alternative. First, tour the ports on your own. Nearly every DCL port stop has access to shuttles or taxis that will bring you into the nearest town where you can explore at your own pace. Or second, arrange for a non-Disney port tour. Many independent providers offer excursions similar to Disney’s, often at a lower cost.

3. Movie or theater snacks.

Preludes snack bar exists on the theater level of all five Disney ships. They sell snacks such as popcorn, candy, and sodas, all for an upcharge. But that’s not the only food you’re allowed to bring into the theater.

Before your show, head up to the pool deck, grab a free soda and some fries or chickens nuggets and you have your nosh for no fee.

4. Adult Dining.

Each Disney Cruise Line ship has one or two restaurants that are adults-only and charge a sometimes substantial fee to dine there.

To save money, you can obviously skip these restaurants. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a more special meal in the regular dining rooms. Feel free to order multiples of any course, order menu items from other rotational restaurants, or ask for your food to be customized in a way that suits your palate. Enlist your serving team as your ally in creating the perfect meal for you, at no upcharge.

5. Fancy ice cream.

Most of the Disney ships have on board specialty ice cream shops. They have fancy flavors available for a fee, but there is plenty of free ice cream on the ships as well.

There will be a sundae offered on nearly every main dining room dessert menu. And there is free soft serve available on every ships’ pool deck (always chocolate and vanilla, but often additional fruity flavors as well). A little creativity can make your free soft serve more special. Grab some cookies from the buffet and make an ice cream sandwich. Add some soft serve to a free soda to make a float. Bring a dish of fruit or syrup from the buffet to top your soft serve.

disney cruise room add ons

6. Souvenirs.

The Disney ships all have multiple gift shops, with ample opportunity for spending. You can just skip the souvenirs. But if you do want some DCL merchandise, you should know that much of the shipboard merch is also available online at shopDisney.com. Shop Disney often offers sales and discounts that are not offered on the ships and they almost always have free shipping codes for orders over $75. If you want, say, a tee shirt that says “Disney Cruise Line,” you many be able to get it for less off the ship.

disney cruise room add ons

7. A verandah.

Verandah is the Disney term for balcony. Staterooms with verandahs almost always cost more than oceanview (porthole) or inside (no window) staterooms. A verandah can be nice, but there are plenty of places on deck to sit outside and watch the water. Particularly on a short cruise, you can have an equally lovely experience without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars extra on a verandah.

Let us know what your favorite DCL money saving tips are.

Hello. Do you not make Priceline/Hotwire posts anymore? Or maybe I don’t k ow how to navigate your site?

Don’t forget the Rainforest Room and the latte charge! I can’t resist upgrading the coffee. Does Wish have punch cards like the other ships?

Avoid room service surcharges. Your room should have a mini fridge. So, load up on buffet items that keep well in the fridge served chilled. Things like Fruit, Peel and Eat Shrimp, Pizza, sometimes sushi. You can take plates back to your room and put them in the fridge for mid-night snacks without the room service upcharge. The ceramic plates are sometimes too large to fit in the mini fridge. Bring some paper plates and ziplocks from home to xfer. And while you can bring Wine/Champagne on board. If you plan to drink it at the dining room…there is a ‘corkage fee’ (think 15 dollars/bottle) that the server adds. It includes a tableside ice bucket and approperate glass wear and the server pours. (Depending on how well you’ve tipped your server on previous night–he/she might ‘forget’ to add this fee)

Disney has free room service. Tips should be given but the actual items ordered are free. From the DCL website: https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/onboard-activities/room-service/ Feast on fresh, made-to-order dishes in the comfort of your stateroom 24 hours a day—with most meal items included in the price of your cruise.

  • Use Packing Cubes : These handy organizers compartmentalize your items, making it easier to find what you need and keep your suitcase tidy. These packing cubes are great value.
  • Compression Bags : Ideal for bulky items like jackets and sweaters, compression bags remove excess air, allowing you to pack more efficiently. I have these and recommend them.
  • Multi-Use Clothing : Opt for clothing that can serve multiple purposes, such as a sarong that doubles as a beach cover-up and a scarf.

Utilizing Stateroom Storage Solutions

Once on board, making the most of your stateroom’s storage options will keep your space feeling spacious and clutter-free.

Consider these tips:

  • Unpack Immediately : As soon as you arrive, take the time to unpack and stow your luggage under the bed or in the closet.
  • Magnetic Hooks : Most stateroom walls are metal, making magnetic hooks a versatile solution for hanging hats, lanyards, and lightweight bags. These are really good.

Essential Items for Onboard Comfort

To ensure a comfortable stay, consider packing a few additional items that can make your stateroom feel more like home:

  • Nightlight : Especially useful for families with young children, a nightlight can provide comfort and safety during nighttime trips to the bathroom.
  • Travel Laundry Bag : Keep dirty clothes separate from clean ones with a lightweight, foldable laundry bag.
  • Reusable Water Bottles : Staying hydrated is key, and bringing your own water bottles can help reduce waste and save money.
  • Travel Clothes Line : There is a clothes line in the shower but it really doesn’t give you enough drying space. You can also bring a travel clothes line to double your hanging space over the bath.

By packing smart and utilizing these space-saving tips, you’ll ensure that your Disney Cruise stateroom remains organized and comfortable, allowing you to fully enjoy your magical adventure at sea.

Efficient Use of Stateroom Space

Maximizing vertical space.

One of the most effective ways to optimize your stateroom is by utilizing vertical space.

Here are some clever strategies:

  • Hanging Organizers : Shoe organizers, hanging shelves, and pocket organizers can store everything from shoes to toiletries and small accessories, freeing up valuable drawer and counter space. BUT REMEMBER you must not hang them over the door – as this could subject you to a hefty fine. Disney banned them as they were causing damage. So if you want to bring one make sure you hang it in the closet or you can hook them on the wall using magnetic hooks.

Smart Furniture Utilization

Maximizing the functionality of your stateroom’s furniture can significantly enhance your living space.

  • Under-Bed Storage : Utilize the space beneath your bed for storing suitcases, shoes, and larger items. Packing cubes or collapsible storage bins can help keep things organized and accessible.
  • Convertible Furniture : Make the most of multifunctional furniture, such as pull-down beds and convertible sofas. During the day, these pieces can be stowed away to create more living space.

Creative Storage Solutions

Thinking outside the box can reveal additional storage opportunities within your stateroom.

Here are some creative ideas:

  • Closet Organization : Maximize closet space by using slim, non-slip hangers, and adding hanging shelves or garment bags. Consider packing a collapsible laundry hamper to keep dirty clothes organized.
  • Bathroom Hacks : Use suction cup organizers or shower caddies to keep toiletries off the counter. A hanging toiletry bag can also be a space-saving solution, providing easy access to your essentials. Just remember to hang it on a hook on the back of the door or bring your own magnetic hooks.
  • Desk and Vanity Space : Keep these areas clutter-free by using small containers or drawer organizers for makeup, jewelry, and other personal items. A multi-compartment travel case can keep everything neatly in one place.

Maximizing Comfort and Convenience

Creating a cozy atmosphere.

Transforming your stateroom into a cozy retreat is essential for a relaxing voyage.

Here are some simple yet effective ways to enhance comfort:

  • Soft Lighting : Bring a small, battery-operated nightlight or string lights to create a warm and inviting ambiance, perfect for winding down after a day of adventures.
  • Comfort Items from Home : Pack a few personal comfort items, such as a favorite blanket, pillow, or a small stuffed animal for children. These familiar items can make your stateroom feel more like home.
  • Aromatherapy : A travel-sized essential oil diffuser or scented sachets can introduce soothing scents to your space, promoting relaxation and well-being.

Ensuring a Good Night’s Sleep

A restful sleep is crucial for enjoying your cruise to the fullest.

Here’s how to ensure you and your family sleep soundly:

  • Blackout Curtains : Make use of the stateroom’s blackout curtains to block out any external light, ensuring an undisturbed sleep environment.
  • White Noise Machine or App : If you’re sensitive to noise, consider bringing a small white noise machine or downloading a white noise app on your smartphone to drown out any background sounds.
  • Comfortable Bedding : Disney Cruise Line has exceptionally comfortable beds and high quality bedding. If you do not find your pillows comfortable, or need extra blankets, always ask your Stateroom Host and they will help you.

Staying Connected and Entertained

Keeping everyone entertained and connected during downtime in your stateroom can enhance the overall cruise experience.

Here are some tips:

  • Portable Electronics : Bring tablets, e-readers, or portable game consoles for entertainment. Don’t forget headphones to keep noise levels down for other guests.
  • Chargers and Adapters : Ensure you have all necessary chargers and consider a multi-port USB charger cube to keep all devices powered up. If you’re traveling internationally, a power adapter may also be needed.
  • Streaming Services and Downloads : Before you set sail, download movies, TV shows, books, and games to your devices.

Easy Access to Essentials

Keeping essentials within easy reach can make your stateroom experience more convenient.

Here’s how to stay organized and prepared:

  • Bedside Caddy : A bedside caddy can hold items like books, glasses, a tablet, or a water bottle, ensuring everything you need is within arm’s reach.
  • Daily Essentials Basket : A collapsible storage cube is good for daily essentials such as sunscreen, sunglasses, room keys, and lanyards. This keeps everything in one place and easy to grab as you head out for the day’s adventures.

Making the Most of Your Stateroom TV and Entertainment System

Your Disney Cruise stateroom is equipped with a state-of-the-art entertainment system designed to keep you entertained during your downtime.

Here’s how to make the most of it:

  • In-Room Movies and Shows : Take advantage of the complimentary on-demand movies and TV shows available on your stateroom TV. Disney offers a wide range of family-friendly options, classic Disney films, and recent blockbusters. Remember too that it shows the nightly shows from the theater.
  • Interactive Features : Explore the interactive features of your stateroom TV, which may include access to shipboard activities, stateroom accounts and port excursion information.

Using Room Service for Ultimate Convenience

Room service on a Disney Cruise is not only convenient but also a delightful experience.

dineycruisebreakfastroomservice

  • 24-Hour Availability : Enjoy the convenience of 24-hour room service, perfect for late-night snacks, early morning coffee, or a cozy meal in your stateroom. Review the room service menu provided in your room for a variety of options.
  • Special Requests : If you need a specific dietary accommodation Disney’s attentive Cast Members will do their best to fulfill your needs.
  • Breakfast in Bed : Start your day with a leisurely breakfast in bed. Simply fill out the room service card the night before, specifying your desired delivery time and breakfast items, and hang it on your door.

Utilizing the Navigator App for Seamless Planning

The Disney Cruise Line Navigator App is an essential tool for maximizing your onboard experience.

Here’s how to use it effectively:

  • Daily Schedules : Access daily schedules of activities, entertainment, and dining options directly from the app. This allows you to plan your day and ensure you don’t miss any must-see events.
  • Dining Reservations : Use the app to view menus, and check your dining rotation.
  • Onboard Communication : Stay connected with your family and friends using the app’s onboard chat feature. It’s a convenient way to coordinate meeting times and locations, especially for larger groups or families with older children.

Exploring Onboard Activities and Services

Disney Cruise Line offers a plethora of onboard activities and services designed to enhance your vacation.

Here’s how to take full advantage:

  • Youth Clubs : Enroll your children in the age-appropriate youth clubs, such as the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab for younger kids, and Edge and Vibe for tweens and teens. These supervised clubs offer a variety of fun and educational activities, giving parents some well-deserved alone time.
  • Adult-Only Areas : Take advantage of the adult-only areas, such as the Quiet Cove Pool , Senses Spa & Salon, and exclusive dining venues like Palo and Remy. These areas provide a tranquil escape and the opportunity to indulge in some luxury.
  • Fitness and Recreation : Stay active with the onboard fitness center, jogging track, and various sports activities. Disney Cruise Line also offers fitness classes and wellness programs to help you maintain your routine while at sea.

By fully utilizing the onboard amenities, you can enhance your Disney Cruise experience, ensuring that every moment of your trip is filled with magic, relaxation, and unforgettable memories.

Final Thoughts

By understanding your stateroom options, packing smartly, and utilizing clever storage solutions, you’ve set the stage for a comfortable and organized space. Enhancing your stateroom’s coziness and convenience with personal touches and onboard amenities further elevates your experience, allowing you to focus on creating cherished memories with your loved ones.

Remember to take full advantage of the entertainment system, room service, and the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App to seamlessly plan your days and stay connected. Exploring the diverse onboard activities and services ensures that there’s something magical for everyone, from the youngest adventurers to those seeking a bit of tranquility.

Hi Alison. This will be our 12 cruise in August. Ok this might sound a little crazy, but I have been racking my brain out to come up with something. I want to have something outside the door to show that our room host or hostess has finished cleaning or turning down our bed at night. Most of the time we are aft but not this sailing. It is always a long walk from elevator to the room. And I am on crutches. I hate walking all the way to the room to find out no one has cleaned the room. I was thinking of something like a placard that they would take off when they have finished. Any ideas or suggestions? Wish DCL would come up with something. lol. Thanks in Advanced Joni

Saturday 1st of June 2024

Hi Joni. Thank you for your question! I think that perhaps a magnetic sign of some sort on your door might help - although this would still be difficult to see from a great distance away. You could ask your stateroom host to put the sign back on the door when it is cleaned.

How to Choose a Disney Cruise Stateroom

How to choose the best Disney Cruise Stateroom for you

By Alisha Molen

Have you decided which Disney Cruise you want to take? Great!

Once you have decided which Disney cruise itinerary is right for you, here is the next step:

Select the perfect stateroom!

Your Disney Cruise stateroom will be your home away from home for a few days and nights. It is also an important factor in the overall cost of your cruise.

What You Should Know about Disney Cruise Staterooms

Disney Cruise Line staterooms are tailored especially to families.

From split bathrooms, to bathtubs, to beds that pop out of the ceiling, to extra storage space and more, Disney has thought of everything!

In fact, their standard cabins are about 25% bigger than standard cabins on other cruise lines. Don’t get me wrong, they are still much smaller than a hotel room, but bigger than the cruise industry average.

Whatever your budget and taste, Disney Cruise Line has accommodations for every traveller. Stateroom options range from cozy and comfortable to grand and luxurious.

What Comes Standard in Every Stateroom?

First, it’s good to know what comes standard in every Disney Cruise Line stateroom:

  • A queen bed (not two twins pushed together)
  • Seating area
  • Desk area with chair and dedicated lighting
  • Privacy curtains that separate sleeping and seating areas
  • Storage: 2 closets, under bed storage space, dresser drawers
  • Hooks for towels
  • Hangers (if you need more, ask your stateroom host/hostess)
  • A mini refrigerator
  • A hairdryer
  • Television (satellite) and in-room movies
  • Full length mirror
  • In-room safes for wallets, passports, phones etc
  • Electrical outlets
  • “Wave Phones” that allow you to call and text both onboard and at Castaway Cay
  • H20 Plus -branded shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, lotion and soap
  • Housekeeping services twice a day—Morning cleaning and nightly turndown service
  • Life jackets for each person
  • Blackout curtains (staterooms with exterior windows)
  • Split bathrooms (in most staterooms)
  • Bathtubs (in most staterooms)

About those Bathtubs

I love the fact that Disney Cruise Line has a bathtub in almost every stateroom! (Accessible rooms have roll-in showers instead of tubs.)

This is not the norm for most cruise lines.

With little kids a tub is kind of a must so it’s nice Disney thought of it all. Naturally they aren’t as big as your tub at home but they should do the trick for your kiddos.

For adults? I’d probably stick with the shower.

What is Not Included in Your Stateroom

Now that we covered what is in the stateroom, here are some items that are not included :

  • Coffeemaker
  • Ironing board

The Four Kinds of Disney Cruise Stateroom

The staterooms on Disney Cruise Line ships can be broken down into four types:

Within each of these 4 stateroom types, there are a number of “ categories ” available.

These “categories” indicate a variance within that room type such as standard or deluxe , a type of verandah, or the location - by deck or area of the ship (forward, midship, or aft).

What Do These Category Numbers Mean?

When it’s time to reserve a cabin, you’ll notice each Disney Cruise stateroom has a “category” and “number” assigned to it.

Example: 5A - Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

These can be confusing until you learn these simple rules:

1) The higher the “number”, the less expensive the stateroom

Staterooms start at category 11 (inside staterooms) and descend to category 4 (verandah staterooms). The Concierge is the most expensive and doesn’t start with a number at all.

This is handy to know because if you compare a Category 7 stateroom with a Category 6, you know at a glance that the 7 is less expensive.

2) The “letter” indicates a location on the ship

For example, 9B is a mid-ship oceanview stateroom while 9C is forward-ship oceanview stateroom. Same floor plan, just maybe on a different deck or different part of the ship.

If there are multiple sub-categories available within a category - such as 9A, 9B, 9C, 9D - then “A” will be the most expensive and most desirable and “D” the least expensive. Of course, “most desirable” is completely subjective so take it with a grain of salt and the price difference between the subcategories is fairly minimal.

How Many Guests Can Sleep in a Stateroom?

Most regular staterooms sleeps 3-4 with a handful that sleep 5. There are also Concierge staterooms that can sleep up to 7. If you have 5+ guests in your party, check out Bonus Tip #1 below.

How to Choose Your Stateroom

Here are our recommended steps for picking the best stateroom for your voyage:

Now...Find Your Stateroom by Ship

Here's a stateroom guide by ship: >> Disney Magic & Disney Wonder Stateroom Guide >> Disney Dream & Disney Fantasy Stateroom Guide >> Disney Wish Stateroom Guide

BONUS TIPS FOR SELECTING A STATEROOM

1) big family consider connecting staterooms.

If your group has more than 4 guests, you'll have a couple of different options for staterooms.

  • A Family Oceanview stateroom or a Suite (sleeps 5 to 7 guests)
  • Two connecting staterooms (sleeps up to 8 guests)

Connecting staterooms are two rooms that have a door between the adjoining wall.

You can leave the door always open to keep an eye on the little ones in the other room, or close it for privacy. It’s kinda like having your own little two-bedroom suite but for less moo-lah.

Which brings me to my next point...

Many times, getting two connecting staterooms is cheaper than one Family Oceanview stateroom or Suite. Crunch the numbers and see what will work best for your family.

NOTE: Just remember that you must have at least one adult booked in each stateroom.

How many connecting staterooms are on each ship?

There are 137 connecting staterooms on both the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder.

On both the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, there are over 500 connecting staterooms.

How do you know which rooms connect?

When selecting a stateroom, look for the little “doors” that open in between the cabins. If there are doors on the adjoining wall, that means it’s a connecting room.

For example, in the photo below, cabins 7064 and 7066 connect.

disney cruise room add ons

2) View of Beach at Castaway Cay

Want a view of the beach when in dock at Castaway Cay ?

Book a room on the starboard (right) side of the ship.

Disney ships will usually back into Castaway Cay’s dock, so the port (left) side cabins will face the dock and the tram area while the starboard (right) side cabins will face the beaches on Castaway Cay.

Just know, this is not a guarantee.

Sometimes there are conditions that will require docking in the opposite direction.

3) If You’re On the Fence About a Verandah

First things first...let's start with this question:

What is a verandah?

A verandah stateroom on a Disney Cruise Line ship is simply a room with a balcony attached.

It is a wonderful experience to stand on your verandah and breathe in the fresh ocean air.

A DCL verandah also offers extra visibility when at port or sailing through a particularly scenic area.

If you’re debating whether to add the additional expense of a verandah (instead of an oceanview) cabin, here are some points to consider in favor of a verandah:

  • Verandahs are more valuable on cruises where there is a lot of scenery. Alaska, Panama, and Mediterranean itineraries, for example.
  • If you have a young child that will require a lot of naps in your stateroom, having a verandah gives the parent a place to escape to look at the view, read a book, and enjoy some room service while you wait with the little one.

4) To Avoid Noise, Have Staterooms All Around You

By booking a stateroom that has other cabins above, below and to all sides, you're able to insulate yourself from any possible ship noise (laundry, sundecks, engine, restaurants, theatres, etc).

5) Request a Crib When You Book

You can request a crib for your baby when you book your cruise. If you have already booked your cruise, go to My Reservations to make your request.

Disney In-Room Celebrations for your Special Occasion

IMG 2710 scaled

Disney is a magical place to celebrate any special occasion! Did you know you can make your Disney experience even more special by adding on an In-Room Celebration? There are packages to help you celebrate birthdays, weddings, or just celebrate your visit to Disney.

My husband turned 40 and we had planned a vacation to Disneyland. We were staying at the Grand California Resort and Spa because turning 40 was GRAND! But, I wanted to do something extra special for him. I ordered him A Mickey’s Birthday Wish package and his surprise was ready when we arrived!

The magic began before we even opened our hotel room door. My husband was leading the pack down the hall to our room when something on one of the doors caught his eye. He walked past it, slowed down, stopped, read the banner and a huge smile broke out across his face! There was a letter wishing him a happy birthday and all of this was before we even got into the room!

Husband walking by in room celebration

Once inside we found that the room had been specially decorated by their team with Mickey confetti, balloons, a gift basket, and yummy treats. I think my kids loved the surprise more than my husband! The celebration package even came with a birthday Mickey ears hat that says “Happy Birthday”, but my husband wouldn’t let me post that picture, haha!

Opening the In room celebration

We were able to enjoy the treats throughout our vacation and brought all of the other goodies home.

Disney Cruise Line Travel Information

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney Cruise Line vacations from the U.S. have been temporarily suspended. The official Disney Cruise Line website states:

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently approved our application to conduct a simulation cruise aboard the Disney Dream on June 29. This is an important next step toward our gradual and responsible resumption of service in U.S. waters. While we continue to work closely with the CDC to refine our new health and safety protocols, it will take some time to bring our Crew back on board and prepare our ships to welcome Guests once again. Additional details note:

Therefore, it is necessary for us to cancel Disney Dream departures through August 6, 2021, Disney Fantasy departures through August 28, 2021, Disney Wonder departures through September 19, 2021, and Disney Magic departures in the US through November 4, 2021. Credit: Disney

As Disney has stated, an official return to sailing date in the United States has not been determined, though CEO Bob Chapek is optimistic about a fall 2021 return. However, “Magic at Sea” staycation cruises for U.K. residents are currently ongoing on the Disney Magic cruise ship.

The newest Disney Cruise Line Ship called Disney Wish is scheduled to set sail on its maiden voyage next summer, 2022. Furthermore, the Disney Wish will have all new Dining experiences and never before seen Character interactions, as Disney is currently searching for Character performers and Ship Wide Actors, and here’s where you can apply!

These expert tips will make your Disney cruise vacation even more magical.

Disney cruises take the traditional cruising experience and add a little bit of magic. Even if you think you know all about the ships and activities on board, you can still return to port without having discovered the secret sundecks, unannounced character greetings, and unexpected Mickey-shaped foods. It's easy to miss out on the most interesting facts and features, so we sought out two trusted experts and now these Disney cruise tips and secrets are no longer under wraps.

Meet the Expert

Adrianna Hwang is a planDisney panelist specializing in Disney Cruise Line.

Heather Peggs is a Disney travel expert with Castle Bound Travel Company.

Read on to discover essential tips for planning your Disney Cruise vacation.

Book your cruise early to get the best deal.

Disney uses a dynamic pricing system, meaning the earlier you book, the more you’ll save. Early bookings also ensure that you get your desired cabin. You can even book your next cruise while on board to save even more. The best part? This placeholder is fully refundable if plans change.

Consider booking a themed sailing.

Disney Cruise Line offers a limited number of themed sailings, including Marvel Day at Sea itineraries. You’ll also want to check out the special holiday cruises surrounding Halloween and Christmas. During these sailings, you’ll spot characters in special outfits and can enjoy themed food and beverage options, specialty entertainment, and much more. Disney Cruise Line guests love to bring themed attire to celebrate the occasion, so pack creatively if you want to partake in the fun.

Save big and let the mouse pick your room.

If you’re not picky about where your cabin is located on the ship, you can save a substantial amount of money by letting Disney pick your cabin. Just select your room type, like an inside cabin, and your specific cabin number will be assigned closer to your sail date.

See if cabin upgrades are available when you arrive at the port.

When available, cruisers may be able to snag an affordable last-minute room upgrade at the port, saving hundreds on a higher-tier room.

Download the app before you go.

Disney Cruise Line’s exclusive Navigator app is an absolute must-have to make the most of your time at sea. It adds convenience while taking care of practical vacation elements, like payment, online check-in, and trip modifications. This is also your go-to for pre-registering for Disney Cruise Line’s wide range of activities and keeping tabs on the daily schedule, which includes showtimes and deck parties. You can also communicate with your family and other cruise-goers for free using the app.

And don’t miss out on this convenient notification feature: “Scroll through the daily activity schedule to look for entertainment options that interest you, and be sure to click the heart icon next to any listings you don't want to miss,” planDisney panelist Adrianna Hwang tells Travel + Leisure . “If you've enabled notifications for the app, you'll receive a reminder about 15 minutes before the activity will begin. It's a really helpful feature when you lose track of time relaxing by the pool!”

This is especially important if character meet-and-greets are a priority for you. “The Disney Cruise Line Navigator app will list character appearance times and locations so that you can be sure to catch your favorite Disney characters on board,” Hwang adds. “If you select the specific character listed in the Daily Activity Schedule within the app, you'll even see the full schedule of times to meet them throughout the cruise so that you can plan accordingly,” Hwang suggests arriving at the greet locations at least five to 10 minutes early.

Use your Castaway Club perks to book extras early.

If you’re looking to book extras, like shore excursions and elevated dining experiences, your booking window depends on your loyalty to Disney Cruise Line. The Castaway Club is Disney’s version of a frequent cruiser program, and sailors earn status based on the number of sailings they’ve been on. Higher status translates to earlier booking windows, so Disney Cruise Line loyalists can score their desired bookings first.

Plan to exchange your currency onboard.

Not only does Disney Cruise Line take no commission for exchanging bills , but they'll actually honor the transaction's rate of exchange for any leftover money. Simply present your receipt prior to the end of the cruise, and they'll convert your foreign currency back to your preferred denomination at the same rate, even if the exchange rate has since changed. (Note: This only applies to bills, not coins, and there is no ATM on board.)

Bring a reusable water bottle.

While there are water fountains and bottle refill stations on board, they can be far away from your room — and disposable bottles (not included in the fare) can add up. The tap water in each room is drinkable, but sinks are often too small to accommodate big bottles. You can bring packs of bottled water, but you'll have to carry it through embarkation — it cannot be packed with luggage — so consider bringing refillable bottles or tumblers.

See characters in their special cruise wardrobe.

Thought you knew everything there was to know about the Fab Five? Wait until you see them in their exclusive Disney Cruise Line wardrobe. Goofy, Donald, Daisy, Mickey, and Minnie wear special outfits for Pirate Night, and they also tailor their outfits to where the ship is headed that day. On Alaska sailings, expect to meet Mickey in fisherman's overalls and Minnie in a fur-lined coat; on trips through the Mediterranean Sea, Goofy dons an Italy-inspired suit. Specialty characters are also known to show up from time to time, like Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle appearing as the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus during the spooky season.

Aspiring princesses won’t want to miss the Royal Gathering.

The Royal Gathering is your chance to meet and greet with Disney royalty, like Tiana and Cinderella, all at one time and place. It’s offered on most cruise itineraries but there is a catch: while tickets are free, they are required to attend. “Complimentary tickets to the Royal Gathering are available to be booked online or through the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app or Disneycruise.com 30 days before your sail date,” Hwang adds. “Take this experience to the next level for your little one by reserving a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeover an hour or two before the Royal Gathering begins.”

The most memorable character experiences won’t be at meet-and-greets.

The lines to meet Mickey and Minnie are (amazingly!) short on Disney Cruise Line, but other favorites like Daisy Duck are known to freely wander the pool and jogging track decks, playfully surprising guests and often sharing elevator rides for a once-in-a-lifetime interaction. Don't miss the character dance parties either, which allow kids and adults to line dance with Goofy and shake it off with Donald Duck for an experience that goes beyond a hug and photograph.

You're allowed to order more than one dish.

Disney Cruise Line’s dinnertime meal service operates on a rotating restaurant schedule, so you'll get to enjoy each non-premium restaurant the ship offers — and some more than once on longer sailings. These highly themed restaurants, like Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure on the Disney Wish , offer pre-fixe dinner menus. Torn between two entrees? Order them both. Each of your ship’s included rotational dining restaurants comes with a fixed three-course menu, but there's nothing stopping you from ordering two different appetizers or entrees to try.

Splurge on specialty dining.

Standard dining is fantastic, but Disney ships also have adults-only restaurants available at an extra charge. Depending on your ship, this could include the French-focused Remy or fan-favorite Palo. While Remy and Enchante can be pricey, you can enjoy Palo for around $50.

And on the Disney Wish , you won’t want to miss its newest iteration, Palo Steakhouse. “If you've sailed with Disney before, you may be familiar with Palo, but on the Wish , Palo Steakhouse is even better,” Heather Peggs, a Disney travel expert with Castle Bound Travel Company, shares with T+L. “I highly recommend trying the A5 wagyu steak, which is about a fifth of the price it would be off the ship, and it's absolutely phenomenal!”

These upgraded dining experiences are known to book up well in advance, but there is occasionally a waitlist available for canceled and missed reservations. “If you can't snag a reservation before the cruise, inquire in person on the day you embark,” Hwang adds. “Look for the activity listed as ‘Dining Reservation Changes’ to speak with a crew member about reservation availability.”

Request the best seat in the house at dinner.

Always dreamed of sitting by the stage at Tiana's Place on the Disney Wonder or enjoying dinner in those gorgeous Enchanted Garden booths on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy ? Well, it's not entirely luck of the draw. Nothing is guaranteed, but requests for a certain table can always be added to your Disney Cruise Line reservation, and they are worth the extra phone call. Concierge guests can make seating requests to their Concierge Service Specialist before boarding as well. You never know when Disney will sprinkle a little extra magic onto your vacation.

And don’t miss the best dinner entertainment.

The dinner show at Animator's Palate is a highlight if you’re sailing on the Magic, Wonder, Dream, or Fantasy, but it's the second visit to that dining room that can't be skipped. It's called Animation Magic, and guests get to draw their own characters and see them come to life on the screens mid-meal. The incredible display is only offered on longer sailings on the Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy, so make sure you don’t skip it. Even better? Request that your rotation allows two visits to Animator's Palate that don't overlap with Pirate Night to ensure you enjoy the show.

Grab a free soda at beverage stations.

Soda is included during sit-down meals, but if you’re craving a thirst quencher outside of those times, go to the free-flowing beverage stations near the pools on each Disney ship. Stations also have coffee with milk and sweeteners available.

Sip cocktails at this favorite bar.

There are plenty of themed watering holes in the adults-only areas of the ships, but on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy , Meridian is the place to be. The upscale bar and lounge is located next door to Palo and Remy on both ships, but it is open to all adults adhering to its business casual dress code. Though known for its martinis, Meridian also offers a cigar bar, custom craft cocktails, and a gin and tonic cart, as well as a private deck hosting a picture-perfect view of nightly sunsets.

Check out the Star Wars -themed bar on the Disney Wish .

The Star Wars : Hyperspace Lounge is a bar exclusively found on the Disney Wish . “Whether you’re an avid Star Wars fan or just want to explore the galaxy, you will be able to enjoy delicious alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages that are simply out of this world,” adds Peggs. Reservations are no longer required, but there might be a wait, especially during peak hours; visit when the ship is in port to avoid the crowds. During the day, guests of all ages are allowed in.

It’s a multi-sensory experience in this immersive, interactive venue, and you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled in case anyone orders the $5,000 Kaiburr Crystal cocktail.

Save on drinks during happy hour at sea.

Be sure to check the Navigator app for daily happy hours at different bars and lounges. The exact offers vary, but they can include deals like half-off draft beer and discounts on specialty cocktails. And if you’re looking to take your cocktail knowledge to the next level, cruises also offer add-on mixology classes and tasting experiences.

Ask about the Sommelier Bin for discounted wine.

Once a bottle of wine is opened, Disney must serve it (in its entirety) that day. Because of this, Disney ships have a sommelier bin, with opened bottles of wine served by the glass at highly discounted rates. This is your chance to sip on otherwise pricey pours at a bargain price. Now that’s Disney magic.

Or B.Y.O.B. to save money.

Looking to save a few bucks? While Disney ships offer a bevy of specialty cocktails, you can bring your own drinks — with some limitations. Hard liquor is a no-go, but each cruiser 21 years of age and up can bring two bottles of wine (or one six-pack of beer) on board with them in their carry-on. If you’re thinking of bringing that bottle of wine with you to dinner, be aware that Disney does charge a corkage fee. You can also bring sealed bottles of water on board with you.

Take a second look at that barbershop on the Disney Wish .

Hook’s Barbery may look like any old upscale barbershop when walking by — but it’s hiding one of the best-kept secrets aboard any Disney ship. Tucked away within the salon is a hidden speakeasy-style bar serving expertly crafted cocktails, including a smoked old fashioned. Its liquor selection is extensive and surprising with rare and vintage pours.

Snack on soft serve on and off the ship.

If you’re a frequent Disney cruiser, you’re probably familiar with the line’s free-flowing soft-serve ice cream. And if the craving strikes when visiting Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, you’ll be glad to know it’s also available on the island for the ultimate sugar rush in the sun.

Get an extra-magical coffee.

Few can resist a Mickey-shaped treat while visiting any Disney property, but the best mouse-themed treat on the ships can be found at Cove Cafe . Order a cappuccino, ask for Mickey's face on it, and prepare to enjoy your jolt of caffeine with some extra magic. It'll cost a few bucks, but the joy of sipping a “Mickeyccino” will always outshine the complimentary coffee served on board.

Order a Mickey bar — and more — with free room service.

You’ll be glad to know that, unlike other cruise lines, Disney Cruise Line’s room service is completely free and offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The best part? You can have an iconic Disney treat, the Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar, delivered directly to your room.

Book early if you plan to use the ship’s nursery.

Bookings open early for guests looking to take advantage of the onboard nursery. Available for an extra charge, the It’s a Small World Nursery is available to supervise your child ages six months to three years old, ideal if you’d like a quiet dinner or time to explore one of the ship’s many themed lounges without the little one in tow. And don’t forget — the other youth clubs for kids, tweens, and teens are absolutely free.

Teens can hang out in the coolest part of the ship.

Every Disney ship has a Vibe , an onboard youth club that is exclusively available for teens ages 14 to 17. There is supervision, of course, and Disney Cruise Line's famously fun activities, but it's practically a private resort for high schoolers to chill in all day and night — no parents allowed.

Explore the kids clubs during the open house.

Activities at the Marvel Super Hero Academy and Star Wars : Millennium Falcon play areas are reserved for young ones, but all kids club spaces empty out for the open house hours, when anyone can wander in and check out Vibe's arcade games or Oceaneer Lab's high-tech designs. Don't skip out on Andy's Room, which brings Toy Story to life while making for incredible Instagram snaps. And you won’t want to miss a multi-level slide on the Disney Wish which takes you from floor to floor in the ship’s soaring lobby. “Little ones can get comfortable with and excited about areas where they will play without their grownups,” shares Hwang.

Join a secret community of friends — hiding in plain sight.

Ever seen those homemade decorations hanging beside neighbors' doors? They're called fish extenders, and they're used by a network of families who have packed small gifts, treats, and trinkets to exchange with each other throughout their trip. To get in on the fun for your next sailing, visit the DisBoards Cruise Meets forum or CruiseCritic's Roll Calls . Many times, there are Facebook groups for your exact sailing as well. This can be particularly helpful with shy kids as they can get acquainted with other cruise-goers their age ahead of their journey.

Add an Adventures by Disney trip to your vacation.

You can enhance your Disney Cruise Line experience with Adventures by Disney Escapes before or after your sailing. Experience global cities through expertly curated itineraries in Barcelona, Paris, Rome, and beyond.

Spring for a concierge-level room and relax on a private sun deck.

There are plenty of perks that come with booking a concierge-level room — namely early access to onboard bookings, personalized service, and in-room amenities. And perhaps the best part is that concierge guests have access to their own private sun and lounge deck outfitted with upscale lounge chairs, complimentary sunscreen, and chilled face towels, as well as a pool deck host who can fulfill any requests for full relaxation.

See the latest Disney movies.

Enjoy the latest Disney releases at the on-board theater without having to buy tickets in advance. Even better? Many new Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars films have 3-D showings, allowing guests to experience eye-popping effects on the high seas. Movie times are available on the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app. And during the holidays, classics are featured, like “Hocus Pocus” during Halloween sailings.

Skip the ports to enjoy fewer crowds at the pool.

It may be tempting to disembark and explore Jamaica or relax on Castaway Cay, but if you stay behind, you can enjoy fewer crowds at the pools. This could be your prime chance to experience the AquaMouse water coaster, the cruise line’s first attraction at sea on the Disney Wish , with little to no line.

There are also lots of activities to take advantage of on board. “I must say I'm a huge fan of staying on board even on port days to explore the array of classes, Broadway-caliber shows, and, of course, the games,” adds Peggs. “If you're looking for family-friendly options, a couple of my favorites are Bingo, which they have every day during your sailing, napkin and towel folding, bar trivia, and so much more!”

Don’t miss the musicals.

While it may be tempting to take advantage of quieter swim times in the evening, you won’t want to miss your ship’s musical offerings. Broadway-quality productions including “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin” (exact offerings depend on the ship) are a must-see. “These are beautifully done and are wonderful for the entire family,” Peggs adds. “Plus, if you purchase a popcorn bucket at the beginning of the cruise, you will be able to enjoy $1.50 refills for the remainder of your cruise!”

There’s an under-the-radar design tour.

Adults 18 and up can enjoy one of the cruise line’s best walking tours. “The Art of The Theme Show Tour gives adults an insightful look into the detailed and thoughtful design of several spaces throughout the ship,” adds Hwang. “It's usually offered in the mornings and provides some fun trivia to share with anyone in your party.”

Unwind at the spa.

You’re on vacation — it’s time to pamper yourself in the state-of-the-art spa. “If you are interested in booking a spa treatment, attend the open house before the ship sets sail,” Peggs shares. “You might get lucky and win a voucher for 10% off or possibly a facial or massage during the raffle. Speaking of savings, the more spa services you get while on board, the better the price will be. If you want to secure a spa day/week pass, be sure to book them sooner rather than later as they sell out pretty quickly!”

There’s a totally free fan-favorite activity.

If your itinerary takes you to Disney’s Castaway Cay, then you can partake in one of Disney Cruise Line’s most beloved activities, the Castaway Cay 5k — and it’s completely free to all guests. Suitable for runners and walkers alike, this on-your-own race invites you to discover Disney’s private island from a different vantage point as you travel through its stunning tropical paths. All participants receive an exclusive medal when they finish.

Not feeling well during your sailing? Disney can help.

There’s nothing worse than feeling sick on vacation. But have no fear, the mouse is here to help. Each ship is equipped with on-site medical help, and if you experience seasickness, complimentary medicine is available.

Grab every photo before the clock runs out.

Even if you skipped every character meet-and-greet, you'll still be able to cram in a week's worth of photos at "Til' We Meet Again," the goodbye show on the final night of each sailing. After a short heartwarming performance, loads of Disney characters, princesses, and theater performers will disperse throughout the crowd, posing for photos on a first-come, first-served basis. The onboard photographers will have already shut down, so you can snap as many smartphone pictures as you'd like, making for a full album in one fell swoop. This experience only lasts for around 20 minutes; you can find the exact time in the Navigator app.

Want to disembark first? Carry your own bag.

You don’t want to sour a wonderful vacation with a never-ending line simply to exit the ship. Instead of leaving your luggage out the night before, carry it off the ship yourself and arrive at your final destination without having to wait in lengthy port queues.

How late can I add a guest to my Disney cruise stateroom? ”

Hey there Yvette and welcome to planDisney. Are you ready to sail the seven seas? I am glad you stopped by with this question to help you get ship shape about adding Guests to your stateroom. According to Disney Cruise Line, you may add Guests to your stateroom anytime before you embark on your journey, even one day in advance. Should you need assistance, contact  Disney Cruise Line directly  however, if you used a Travel Agent or Disney Vacation Club they will need to make modifications on your behalf. Here are some important requirements that may affect the availability of additional stateroom Guests:

  • The ship must not be at capacity
  • The stateroom must have space available
  • The stateroom reservation may have reservation restrictions
  • The stateroom location
  • The stateroom category
  • Lifeboat space
  • Booking agent: directly through Disney Cruise Line, Travel Agency, or Disney Vacation Club

Even though staterooms may have space for a certain number of Guests it does not mean that every state room is or can be completely filled. Disney Cruise Line must take into account the number of people in each muster location so crew members can assign them to the appropriate lifeboat. If all lifeboat spaces are accounted then you will not be able to add a Guest to your stateroom. A recent example: This past summer we were on the Disney Dream for an 11-night Mediterranean Cruise . It was magnificent. The day before we were to disembark another Guest booked a stateroom on the cruise that would immediately follow the current one. Essentially cruising "back-to-back." They met all the requirements to allow that to happen. planDisney Pro Tip: It would be best to add the additional Guest to the initial reservation because the price will be lower than adding them closer to the embarkation day. Then if you need to change you could do it at a later date for a fee that likely will be less than adding them at a later date. Always discuss this option when you book your cruise. Yvette, I know your voyage will be an enchanting sea adventure. Please feel free to write me back directly with any follow-up questions. Enjoy making many Magical Memories. ~Jason

However, I’m going to be a little looser in my definition of a Disney add on. I want to take a look at an array of the best Disney World extras which can make your vacation even better.

These Disney add on opportunities can be found in all facets of a Disney vacation. Some of these are great options to enhance your non-park days, while others are the perfect way to make a park day even more fun.

Of course, these experiences come at a cost. Some of these Disney experiences can be accomplished relatively inexpensively, while others are quite pricey.

Because of the higher price tag attached to some of these Enchanting Extras, they make great additions to your Disney Bucket List. One of the top items on my ultimate Disney Bucket List is the Wild Africa Trek!

In addition to listing my favorites (so far!), I asked some other Disney bloggers about their favorite Disney add-ons.

10 Best Disney World Add Ons

Seriously, for right now I have 10 on this list, but it will likely just keep growing! There really are so many different Disney World add on experiences. I predict that some day this post will be quite long!

Disney add ons have taken a hit since the reopening. They’ve been slow to return, but they are in fact coming back.

However, that means some of the options on this list might not be currently available. In theory, they should return slowly but surely. However, time will tell.

1. Bippidi Boppidi Boutique

Who doesn’t want to get the royal treatment? The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is ready to make every little Princess or Prince feel like they are a part of their favorite Disney movie.

With two locations, inside Cinderella’s Castle or in Disney Springs, the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique experience starts with selecting your package to include everything from hair and makeup, to a full princess dress and crystal tiara.

For the princes, they can choose from different knightly costumes and shields/swords.

Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother meets you in a royal dressing room, and you are whisked away to a Fairy Godmother-In-Training. Your child will get to choose their hairstyle, even including pink and purple extensions if they want!

After hair, makeup, and nails, every style is finished off with some pixie dust glitter. The knights can choose to get dragon scales sprinkled in their hair too.

After your child’s head-to-toe transformation, they enjoy a photo-shoot all their own! There really is no better way to make your child feel like they are living in a storybook than to treat them to a magnificent makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique!

2. Wild Africa Trek

The Wild Africa Trek at Animal Kingdom is definitely on the pricier side of things, but you get a fair amount of bang for your buck with it.

Coming in at a starting price of $199 per person, it puts a dent in the vacation budget. However, this gives you multiple hours of behind the scenes fun.

This 3 hour tour includes a private tour of the safari, on a different path than that taken by the standard safari. You also get to walk over rope bridges and through grasslands.

All of this combined gives you the opportunity to explore the safari in ways not experienced by the average guest.

Included in the tour is complimentary photo services to capture some unique memories of your family on the tour.

And to cap it all off, every guest is provided with an African inspired snack. FYI, this “snack” is cooked by the chefs at Tiffins, Animal Kingdom’s amazing signature restaurant.

This tour does have some restrictions regarding height, weight, and age due to the harness system that is used. Make sure you double check those requirements before you book it.

3. Caring for Giants

Caring for Giants is a behind the scenes experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Because it takes place inside the park, a park ticket for the day is required.

This tour is considered one of the best experiences for the money, coming in at only $35 per person for a 60 minute tour.

First, you get to walk behind the scenes at Animal Kingdom on your way to the tour bus. The Cast Member with us was full of humor and information during this short walk.

While the bus ride wasn’t overly exciting, it was very informative. The Cast Member did a great job of keep us all entertained on the short bus ride to the back of the safari.

That’s right, this tour takes you behind the scenes of the safari. This gives you such a unique opportunity to go deeper into the property.

But let’s face it, the real stars of the show are the elephants. You are taken to a couple of different viewing spots within Kilimanjaro Safari that give you much closer access than typical safari guests.

It was wonderful to hear the names and stories of some of the elephants, and to watch baby Stella explore her surroundings.

We learned so much about the elephants themselves and their personalities, but also about elephant behavior in general.

And of course, we learned about the plight of elephants in the wild and the importance of conservation and education to help them thriving. Overall, a wonderful experience my family will not forget.

4. Savi’s Workshop

Here’s another option that is definitely on the pricy side, but if you have any Star Wars fans in your group, it could be worth it.

Savi’s Workshop is located in Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios. This experience gives people the opportunity to build their very own lightsabers.

These aren’t the standard plastic lightsabers you can buy in any old gift shop, either.

Guests are provided with different themes to choose from, such as Peace and Justice, Elemental Nature, Power and Control, and Protection and Defense.

The theme that you choose determines the type of look your lightsaber will have.

But aside from simply building a lightsaber, which is cool in and of itself, a trip to Savi’s Workshop is more about the experience. It is highly themed to try to immerse you into the story told to you by Savi’s Gatherers.

Current pricing for Savi’s Workshop is $220. This provides you with one lightsaber and the full experience. One nice feature is that each paid guest is allowed to bring in one extra person with them.

This allows a couple people into the experience for the price of one. However, you only get one lightsaber.

5. Holiday Parties

While the holiday parties were a bit different this past year due to the pandemic, the holiday parties at Magic Kingdom continue to be very popular.

At this point it remains to be seen whether the traditional parties will return (Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party), or if the adapted parties are the option (Disney After Hours Boo Bash and Disney Very Merriest After Hours).

Whatever the option is, the holiday parties tend to be a lot of fun and can add a lot to your Disney vacation.

I am a huge fan of both of the holiday parties, and highly recommend them to anyone planning a Disney vacation during these holiday seasons.

Both Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party are filled with exclusive character meet and greets, treats, special parades, and significantly shorter lines for all of the rides.

The best part of the parties is the phenomenal job Disney does with creating the perfect atmosphere to immerse the guests into the spirit of the holiday.

That combined with having access to Magic Kingdom with smaller crowds is an automatic win-win situation.

If you want to know more about the details of Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party , make sure you check out my others posts. They really are two of my favorite things to do at Disney World.

6. Memory Maker

Part of the wonder of Disney is seeing so many amazing things in a very short period time.  Planning can take months or even years beforehand, and ironing out every detail can be anxiety ridden.

Enjoying every minute of the experience is key, but what about preserving the memories?

Taking your own photos is a great thing, and the easiest way is to do so is to keep a cell phone handy. But there are areas where it might be difficult or impossible to take photos.

That’s where the Disney Memory Maker comes in.  It’s a fantastic add on and provides an unlimited amount of digital Photopass photos that are captured in various places throughout the park.

Photographers are at attractions and dining venues, and there are photo places on rides as well. Whenever you see a photographer, you can pose and capture your family at that moment without the hassle of dealing with a large camera.

The Memory Maker is logged to your MagicBand or Disney Card and is scanned under your unique code.

After your visit, you can access all the photos within a 45-day period from the day the photo was taken.   If you are a premium Disney member you have up to 1 year to access and download your photos.

The Memory Maker does allow for the purchase for an expiration extension to allow you more time to download your photos.

The Memory Maker is one of the best add ons at Disney, as it truly captures some of the most amazing moments during your Disney experience.

-Diana at The Elusive Family

Tip from Nicole: If you are always the one behind the camera, like me, then Memory Maker is a great way to finally include yourself in your vacation pictures!

7. Candlelight Processional Dining Package

Candlelight Processional is a nightly event within Epcot’s International Festival of the Holidays. If you are at Disney during the Christmas season, it really should not be missed.

One of the ways to guarantee yourself a seat at the experience is with the Candlelight Processional Dining Package. This event is in high demand, with people lining up well in advance.

The Candlelight Processional Dining Package is the only way to avoid the long wait.

When booking opens, you reserve a Candlelight Processional Dining Package at the participating Table Service restaurant of your choice. You are then assigned a corresponding show time for Candlelight Processional.

During the holidays, Epcot does its best to hit you over the head with holiday spirit, and Candlelight Processional is the pinnacle of that effort.

A celebrity narrator (Neil Patrick Harris is a fan favorite) reads the Christmas story from the Bible. The readings are interspersed with corresponding Christmas songs by a large choir. All of this is accompanied by a full orchestra.

The impact of all of this is stunning and chill inducing. It really is such a wonderful holiday experience and I highly recommend Candlelight Processional.

You don’t have to book the extra dining package in order to see the performance, it’s actually included in the price of your Epcot park ticket.

The dining package simply guarantees you seating in a preferred seating area.

Candlelight Processional at Epcot

8. Keys to the Kingdom Tour

The Keys to the Kingdom Tour is available at Magic Kingdom and requires park admission as well as a reservation and fee for the tour.

This tour gives an incredible behind-the-scenes look at Magic Kingdom. It is a walking tour and takes around five hours total. There are LOTS of breaks and resting opportunities and the cost (as well as time) includes lunch.

Even an avid Disney visitor will love this tour. In fact, it really is best suited for the fans of Walt Disney and his theme parks. First-time visitors to the park won’t have the appreciation for the facts given during the tour (and would have better use of their 5 hours to enjoy the actual park!).

Personally, I plan to take each of my children on the Keys to the Kingdom tour once they are old enough to know the secrets behind the magic at Magic Kingdom.

This tour travels behind the scenes at the park…and even  under  the park to explore the tunnel system used by Cast Members to travel unseen throughout different areas of Magic Kingdom.

This tour is a fabulous add-on for a vacation to Disney World and will not disappoint!

-Emily from Journey of Parenthood

9. Fantasia Gardens Miniature Golf

Disney World isn’t just about the rides and the characters. In fact, they have lots of other great activities for families and friends visiting the resort. One of my favorite things to add to our vacation is a few hours at the Fantasia Gardens Putt Putt Course.

This course is located on Disney Property, but not inside the parks. It’s full of fun, and somewhat subtle, references to the popular Fantasia movie.

We love coming here for a few hours of relaxing family fun. The lines are much shorter and some trees provide intermittent shade. It’s a perfect get away on arrival or departure days.

Normally, we go on our off day between parks. Typically we want to spend our off day playing putt putt, getting ice cream and then going to Disney Springs for dinner. We’ve also gone in the mornings on days that we planned to go to MVMCP or MNSSHP.

With hours typically running from 10a-10p during peak seasons, it’s easy to fit it into your Disney trip.  Regardless of when you come to the park, The course is fun for toddlers through adults at any time of the year!

-Seely at Mouse Ear Memories

Tip from Nicole: If you have a vacation package booked through Disney, look for the Disney Magical Extras discount card in your Magic Band box. This will give you a discount for Fantasia Gardens!

10. Hoop Dee Doo Revue

Why just go to dinner when you can go to dinner and a show? Hoop Dee Doo Revue, located at Fort Wilderness Resort is possibly considered the best dinner show at Disney World.

But don’t be intimidated by getting to that location, it’s easier than you think.

While you chow down on some down home barbecue cooking, the actors keep you well entertained. There is singing, dancing, joking, and a whole bunch of fun to be had.

The actors come right out into the audience and you never know just who will be selected to participate in their act. Never fear though, they won’t force anyone to participate who is uncomfortable with the idea.

I cannot stress to you just how fun this experience is for the whole family. Pricing and some details vary depending on which category you book your table in so head on over to my full review of Hoop Dee Doo Revue to get the details.

Hoop Dee Doo hasn’t returned yet since the reopening, but I have high hopes it will be back some day.

How About Those Free Disney Add-Ons I Mentioned?

As I mentioned in the intro, there are some Disney add ons you can do for free. Mind you, these aren’t plentiful, but they are there.

To supplement this list, check out my list of things to do outside the Disney parks . While some of those things cost money, the list does include a number of free things to do.

Any Epcot Festival

The most obvious free additions to your trip are any of the Epcot Festivals. At this point they take place almost year round, so odds are good one is happening during your trip.

Admission to any of the Epcot Festivals is included in the admission of your park ticket. This makes attending the festivals free.

However, if you really want to experience the festivals, this will require money to spend on all the delicious food on offer. But there are festival offerings that are free of charge.

Here is a list of the different Epcot Festivals:

  • Food & Wine Festival
  • Flower & Garden Festival

Resort Activities

This one only applies to the Disney resorts, though it’s possible that other resorts in Orlando might do this as well.

Many of the resorts have little extras that are included for resort guests, but many people aren’t even aware of them.

For example, many of the resorts have Movies Under the Stars. This allows guests to come and watch a favorite Disney movie on the lawn of their resort.

Art of Animation resort has an animation drawing class you can take.

These are just a couple of examples, but it helps to demonstrate the point. Make sure you pay attention to what your resort offers. There just might be something you’ll enjoy.

Final Thoughts on Disney Add Ons

I love the fact that you can really add some flare to an already awesome trip with these experiences.

I think the price tag on some of the tours and parties is a bit high, but that clearly hasn’t completely stopped me, or anyone else, from participating in them.

If you’re interested in learning about all the different Disney add ons, head over to the official Disney World Enchanting Extras page . Do so at your own risk: I guarantee you will find something you want to add to your trip.

2 thoughts on “The Best Disney Add-Ons to Make Your Trip Better”

We went to the Fantasia gardens mini golf in December of 2018 and we’re very disappointed. It was not at all up to Disney standards, things didn’t work, and transportation to get there was a nightmare. It was a freebie for us and I am glad we didn’t pay for it. I would not recommend it.

I would tend to agree. We went in 2016 and it was fine, nothing overly wonderful from the adult perspective, but my kids loved it. My biggest memory is actually the fact that we baked in the sun. I want to try the other mini golf course over near Blizzard Beach. It’s just so far away from everything it’s hard to plan logistically.

Alright so you could spend upto 1000 or even more booking dinners excursions spas etc So do they ask for that payment when boarding or leaving the ship ? Yeah they should let your pay in advance, as a lot of people like to have it all paid. That's why I keep adding money to my onboard account so it is all paid I take it any money on my onboard account I don't use they will just refund if need be ? Can you change things from the disney shop to your account or should I say is there anything you can't change to your account

KristiMc

You don't pay for any excursions, Palo/Remy, spa treatments when you book them. They will be charged to your room. If you add OBC to your account, all of your charges will be deducted from this throughout your cruise. If you have a balance at the end it will be charged to the card that you put on your account or you can go to guest services and pay with cash.

If you have money left on your account, it will be credited back to the original source (Disney Visa, gift card etc.) If you have an OBC from Disney or from a Travel agent , these OBC's will be used first because they are usually not refundable.

That's great, what I need to no One other question is I no it costs a bit more to do excursions through disney Would you say there are any benefits in doing it through disney compared to another tour group ?

The main benefit of booking excursions through DCL is that if the tour runs long and you do not make it back to the ship on time, the ship will either wait for the excursion to return or pay for you to get to the next port. If you do your own thing you need to make sure you are back on time or you may miss the ship.
