Whether you want to kick back at a resort in Cancun or you’d prefer an all-inclusive South American getaway, there is bound to be a lot of moving parts.

Nobody said planning a vacation was easy. Truth be told, it can be a rather stressful and time-consuming experience (and an expensive one, at that). If you’re traveling internationally, you have to get your passport in order. You have to take off time from work. You have to book a flight , a hotel, and probably rent a car . You have to pick out activities, buy tickets to events, book reservations at restaurants, and maybe book a tour or experience. The list goes on and on and on.

Sometimes I just can’t be bothered with all of that planning and stressing and coordinating (I’m already not the most organized and detail-oriented person in the world). This is why, if I have a little extra money to spare, I occasionally like to turn to a vacation packages site. The best vacation package sites , after all, do all of the heavy lifting for me. They set up almost every component of the trip. All I have to do is decide where I want to go and pick the perfect vacation package for me!

Vacation packages do have a reputation for being expensive. And, truth be told, compared to, say, backpacking in the Himalayas, they are. However, if you look at the value of everything that you are getting and then way that against the price of the vacation package, 9 times out of 10, you are going to be saving some serious money … especially if you take the time to find the best vacation packages site for you.

And that is where I come in. It is my job to make sure that every step of the way, from choosing the destination to finding the best travel site to stepping off the airplane into paradise , goes as smoothly and easily as possible. That is the point of booking a vacation package, isn’t it? You’re meant to be pampering yourself, not stressing over which vacation package site is going to give you the most affordable vacation package deal with the most user-friendly interface. Let me take care of that.

The contender for the best vacation packages site that I would like to introduce you to today is Apple. No, not that Apple … Apple Vacations, which actually predates the more famous Apple company by almost a decade. It is probably the longest-running online vacation package service in existence. AppleVacations was helping people find the best deals on vacation packages since the people behind Travelocity were in diapers. This is a trusted, tried, dependable, and reputable brand, the likes of which we seldom see.

AppleVacations curates a very specific kind of vacation experience. In fact, it’s main focus has historically been providing customers with cheap vacation packages to beachy resorts in Mexico . Don’t fret, though, Mexico isn’t the only destination AppleVacations is interested in taking you. This site also offers dream vacation deals to Hawaii , the Caribbean, and Central and South America as well – all the tropical hot spots.

So, does it sound like Apple Vacations might have what it takes to be the best vacation packages site for you? Well, the only way to know for sure is to take a closer look at everything Apple Vacations has to offer. So, without further ado, I bring you … (drum roll, please) … AppleVacations!

Who owns AppleVacations?

AppleVacations was founded in 1969 but had a different name back then. When brothers-in-law John Mullen and Al Atkinson started the company, they simply called it Atkinson and Mullen Travel. It wasn’t until Atkinson left and Mullen became the sole owner of the company that he changed the name to AppleVacations.

In 2001, Mullen’s son-in-law, Alejandro Zozaya, created the resort sales, marketing, and brand management company known as AMResorts. About a decade later, Zozaya had the idea of merging AMResorts with AppleVacation, which resulted in the founding of the Apple Leisure Group (ALG), the conglomerate under which AppleVacations is a subsidiary to this day.

As of 2021, including AppleVacations and the online travel agency Cheap Caribbean , ALG has 14 subsidiaries, making it one of the largest players in the travel space today.

Who is AppleVacations For?

Perhaps my only real complaint with AppleVacations is that it suffers from a somewhat subpar site design. So, it only makes sense to get the negative stuff out of the way; then, I’ll be singing this vacation packages site’s praises for the rest of the review (spoiler alert). For now, though, let’s break down why the site design bugs me.

Truth be told, my distaste in this site’s design is mostly aesthetic. It just doesn’t look like a contemporary travel booking site to me. It looks – I don’t know – “cheap” might not be the perfect word, but close to it. No offense if you have a WordPress site of your own, but it looks like a WordPress site that somebody made from just choosing one of the default templates. There’s nothing wrong with that for a personal website, small startup company, or blog … but if you run one of the longest-running and most successful companies for securing vacation packages in the world, I would expect your site to have a more distinguished, sleek look to it.

That being said, functionally speaking, the site is fine. You can easily browse AppleVacation’s featured deals, browse by destination, or enter a location and take a look at some hotel/flight combos that Apple has to offer. To be fair, the listings pages of AppleVacations are much better put together and up to standard than the homepage (for whatever reason).

How to get the best deal on AppleVacations?

AppleVacations offers a good number of filers when searching for flights, hotels, combos, or vacation packages. Customize your search easily by filtering by price, hotel class, amenities, and experiences (dining, beach, nightlife, family, etc.). Likewise, there are plenty of ways to sort your results as well, making it easy to find precisely what you are looking for. Oh, and one of my favorite search features is the fact that you can conveniently access recent search queries or conduct a new search without having to leave the page you are on.

One feature of AppleVacations that I find particularly alluring is its nonstop flights. Whereas many vacation packages or flight booking sites may force you onto several transfer flights just to say that they offer the cheapest price on the market, AppleVacations doesn’t play that game. They are more concerned with providing a relaxing resort experience … nonstop flights are one part of that. Why shouldn’t your vacation begin on the plane?

AppleVacations also offers great deals on vacation packages and hotels. In fact, these are some of the most affordable cheap vacation packages and hotel deals that I have ever seen. I don’t know how Apple has managed to get some of these incredible deals, such as golf discounts, special wedding rates, and room upgrades, but I won’t question it. I’ll just enjoy it!

Lastly, who says travel services need to become more impersonal just because they are online? AppleVacations offers what I would say is nearly a boutique experience in the digital age. Once you book your vacation package, Apple doesn’t leave you high and dry. Whenever you book a vacation package, they assign you a customer support representative who will promptly address any issues that may arise.

Does AppleVacations have an app?

Unfortunately, there is no AppleVacations mobile app. Well, there is an AppleVacations app, but from what I can tell, it is not the same AppleVacations that has been around since 1969. That being said, the site is perfectly optimized for mobile devices, so browsing and booking on your smartphone or tablet should be just as easy as doing so on your desktop or laptop. In fact, the mobile site design, I would say, is much better than the desktop one. It almost looks and feels like an app, even.

One of my favorite components of the AppleVacations experience, whether on a mobile device or home computer, is the fact that it is ad free. Nobody likes being advertised to … especially not when they are on the verge of spending hundreds (maybe even thousands) of dollars on a ritzy vacation package deal. So, kudos to you Apple, once again.

What could be better on AppleVacations?

Firstly, I would love to see a mobile app. Some may say that it isn’t necessary, but in this increasingly mobile and app-driven world, I would argue that it is in 2021. Secondly, I truly hope that Apple considers a site redesign – I’m talking a full-blown makeover from the homepage to the last. AppleVacations offers luxury vacation packages, and I think that the user experience should better reflect that fact.

The answer is yes . To limit your search to all-inclusive resorts, select All-inclusive resort under the Property Types filter.

You’ll earn a minimum of 1,000 American miles with any package booked through AA Vacations, but keep an eye out for special deals that come with up to 30,000 bonus miles . You’ll also earn Loyalty Points towards elite status with your purchase.

While you might think of Kayak as a great website to use for flight searches , it can also find hotels, car rentals, cruises, and vacation packages . This easy-to-use site is a metasearch engine. That means it can search for travel on other sites so you can easily see where the good deals are. Then, you’ll be transferred to a separate site to book.

To narrow your search to all-inclusive resorts only, select All-inclusive under Board in the filtering options after specifying your travel details.

You’ll see that each search result lists a separate website where that particular deal can be found. If there are multiple websites offering a similar deal, you’ll be able to see them all by clicking the See all dropdown arrow under View Deal .

Hotels.com’s loyalty program is called OneKey, the same program used by Expedia and Vrbo.

One of the nice things about Orbitz is that in addition to filtering by property type (like all-inclusive), you can filter by cancellation policy so you can quickly see hotels that offer free cancellation.

While Orbitz is fairly similar to many other online travel agencies, one of its benefits is the Orbitz Rewards program. In this example, CheapTickets and Orbitz tied for the best price for a hotel and flight while Kayak offered the best price for the hotel only, beating out even the hotel’s website.

If you’re dreaming of relaxing on a beach while listening to a steel drum band, this is your site. As the name suggests, Cheap Caribbean offers vacations to the Caribbean, Mexico, Central, and South America. What’s more, their packages come at budget prices. 

Cheap Caribbean has several packages to choose from. You can build your own vacation package or choose from one of the many deals on their site. The site gives you several options to sort through vacations listing them by destination, deals, or resorts. 

The site also has the option of sorting vacations by theme. So, whether you’re looking for a family vacation or a romantic getaway for two, this site can take care of you. To find all-inclusive deals, you will want to go to the deals page and select all-inclusive. 

The site is easy to navigate and provides you with several suggested deals immediately. If you happen to get lost or need general advice, there is an option to chat with an agent online.

Booking a flight, hotel, and rental car together doesn’t just save you time—it can often save you money, too. But before you make such a significant purchase, it’s important to find the best travel package sites for booking your vacation.

I tested more than a dozen vacation package sites to see which ones had the lowest prices and best user experience. I discovered that many of the best vacation package websites allow you to book any combination of flight, hotel, and rental car, while others are more limited (flight + hotel is often the default). Fortunately, some sites will let you add a car onto a hotel+flight package, even if a car isn’t listed on the initial booking page.

It’s also important to compare the price of a vacation booked as a bundle to that same trip booked a la carte as separate components. Booking a package isn’t always cheaper, and sometimes you’ll get  better flight options to choose from if you search for your airfare separately. In some searches, I discovered that the flight options included by default with my vacation package had ridiculously long layovers or undesirable departure times (4:30 a.m., anyone?).

The Best Car Rental Booking Sites

Keep a sharp eye out for resort fees; many of the best vacation booking sites don’t count them in their initial per-person price estimate because they’re collected separately by the hotel, but they can drive up the final cost of your trip. Similarly, optional airline baggage fees can also increase your total bill, especially if you book a flight in basic economy, and some vacation package sites don’t disclose these fees as clearly as others.

Finally, it’s important to know that many of the best sites for vacation packages are owned by the same parent company, so you’ll often find similar inventory and prices from one to the next. Knowing which sites are mostly interchangeable can save you some research time.

The Best Travel Package Sites

We put them to the test to compare prices, inclusions, and more. The following are the best websites to book vacations, listed in no particular order. Scroll down for more in-depth analysis of each one.

• Expedia’s sister sites: Travelocity , Orbitz , and CheapTickets

CheapCaribbean.com

Funjet vacations.

This well-known site is one of the best travel package sites for a reason. Expedia offers a full complement of bundle options (flight/hotel, flight/car, hotel/car, and flight/hotel/car) as well as trips to just about every corner of the globe. It’s reliable when it comes to pricing, too: Expedia offered the lowest price in two of my five tests, and was cheaper than average in all but one test booking.

That said, the amount the site said I was saving on a given package didn’t always match up to the actual price difference when I added up the cost of the trip’s individual elements. In one of my test cases, it was actually cheaper to book my flight, hotel, and car separately. So take those supposed savings with a grain of salt (or even better, price out the components separately on your own to be sure you’re getting the best deal).

Expedia has plenty of useful filters to help you find what you need. You can sort hotels by price, distance from a city’s downtown, guest rating, package discount, and property class, while flight options can be filtered by general departure and arrival times (for example, morning vs. evening), airline, whether carry-on bags are included, and more. You can also sort flight options by duration (longest or shortest), price (highest or lowest), departure time (earliest or latest), and arrival time (earliest or latest). There’s also a map view so you can check out the location of each hotel.

Best Feature: The breadth of choice and consistency of pricing make Expedia perhaps the best site for vacation packages. You may not always get the absolute lowest price here, but chances are you’ll pay a fair rate and have plenty of options to choose from.

How Far in Advance Should You Book a Vacation Home?

Expedia’s Sister Sites: Travelocity, Orbitz, and CheapTickets

Many travelers don’t realize that Travelocity , Orbitz , and CheapTickets are all owned by Expedia Group, and typically have very similar inventory and pricing to Expedia. Each of these sites has similar layouts and filter options, too. Like Expedia, these three sites offer every possible vacation package combination involving a flight, hotel, and/or rental car.

It was rare for any of these sites to beat out Expedia’s prices in my tests; in general, the rates were identical (especially on Travelocity, where I didn’t find any deviations from Expedia) or a little bit higher. However, Orbitz and CheapTickets did offer slightly cheaper packages on one flight/car itinerary.

Because the pricing is so similar, it’s probably not worth searching all three of these sites in addition to Expedia unless a difference of a few dollars will make or break your travel budget.

Best Feature: Travelocity, Orbitz, and CheapTickets offer a checkbox on their main booking page to specify “I only need accommodations for part of my trip”—a feature that allows user to select a subset of their trip dates and search for travel packages only within that period. This feature is also reflected on Expedia’s search page.

Note: Expedia Group also owns Hotwire , which I didn’t find quite as reliable as the other three in my tests. For one itinerary, a nonstop flight that the other sites offered was not available when booking a Hotwire package (though it was available when booking a separate flight on Hotwire), and the pricing on some searches was a little higher than on the other sites.

Like Expedia and its partners, Priceline also offers every possible combination of flight, hotel, and rental car. Its search results pages are easy to navigate, with plenty of filter and sort options, plus a map view for hotels. Priceline offers numerous hotel options in popular vacation destinations at every price point.

One quirk to prepare for: Priceline’s flight result page lists departure and return flights together as a pair rather than letting you choose each one separately. This cuts down on the number of screens you have to click through but could mean extra scrolling while you try to find the exact two flights you want. Not all flights that are available when booking airfare separately on Priceline seem to be accessible to those booking a package—so it’s worth checking both.

Priceline was in the middle of the pack as far as pricing was concerned. It won one of my tests but was the most expensive option in two others; overall, it offered cheaper-than-average prices 60 percent of the time. To help you save money, the site offers “Express Deals” for rental cars, an opaque option in which you don’t know which rental car brand you’ll get until after you’ve booked. If you’d rather choose which company you’re renting from, standard car rentals are also available.

Best feature: Once you’ve selected your flight and rental car preferences, the site will keep them the same as you click through alternate hotel possibilities—saving you the hassle of having to select them over and over again.

What Happens If You Don’t Turn Your Phone to Airplane Mode?

As its name suggests, CheapCaribbean.com has a more limited scope than other sites on this list, but it’s worth checking if you’re planning a trip to the Caribbean, where package trips such as honeymoons are particularly popular. The site turned up cheaper-than-average prices for both of my Caribbean tests.

CheapCaribbean.com is one of the best vacation websites for all-inclusive packages. Once you’ve entered your trip information, you can also filter your results by “adults only,” “children’s amenities,” and “luxury.” Each hotel-specific page includes a list of active promotions, on-site activities, and the property’s Tripadvisor Traveler Rating.

In some ways CheapCaribbean.com isn’t quite as sophisticated as other travel package sites. There’s no map available to compare locations of the listed hotel options. Also annoying: not being able to group Houston’s two airports into a single search, though you can select “all airports” for New York City and Washington, D.C. But the affordable deals are worth a few snags, as long as you’re only looking for a flight/hotel package—there’s no option to add a car or create any other package combinations, though you can add travel insurance and transfers, at least for the destinations I checked.

Best Feature: The “ Deals of Fortune ,” or bookings where you know the destination but not the exact resort until about a week before the trip. This is a fun feature for value-conscious travelers who aren’t set on a particular island or property.

A popular meta-search site, Kayak saves travelers time by searching many of the best travel package sites with a single click. Unfortunately, you can’t specify which elements of your trip you’d like to bundle; it searches flight + hotel by default. You can add a car later on some of its partner sites, but if you’re looking for a flight/car package, you’ll have to go elsewhere.

Results list the cheapest available packages from sites such as Priceline (Kayak’s sister company), Expedia, and CheapCaribbean.com. There’s a map view available, and the results page shows both air- and hotel-related filters to make it easy to find nonstop flights, free breakfast, or a specific hotel.

I found that the prices listed on Kayak didn’t always match the price on the source site when I clicked over to find the deal—a fairly common problem with meta-search sites. But I also occasionally discovered that I got a different price after clicking from Kayak than I did when searching the same itinerary from the booking site’s home page. For example, a Las Vegas package was $819 per person on Priceline when I clicked over from Kayak, but just $783 when I booked the same package from the Priceline home page. Another test offered the opposite result, with the price being cheaper after clicking from Kayak than it was when booking directly on Priceline. The lesson: Test both options when using a meta-search site.

Best Feature: Being able to search some of the best vacation booking sites in a single place is a major time saver. Though Kayak doesn’t always find you the lowest possible price, it’s a good place to start your search and get an idea of what’s out there.

The Essential Caribbean Packing List

The Funjet home page gives you a single package option: flight/hotel. However, you can work around this by adding a rental car on at the end of a flight/hotel or individual flight booking. There are plenty of sort options for your results, including price, hotel name, rating, points of interest, and location.

One annoyance: Similarly to CheapCarribbean.com, there is no option to select “all airports” for certain cities like Houston or Chicago. And Funjet’s prices aren’t the most consistent, ranking as the cheapest in one test and the most expensive in another. Still, the site is worth comparing to others when booking your vacation.

Best Feature: Rather than making you scour the web for coupons, Funjet automatically applies any relevant promo codes to your search.

Note: If you’re headed to the Caribbean, Central or South America, Hawaii, or Mexico, try your search on Funjet’s sister site, Apple Vacations . The destinations it covers are more limited than Funjet’s, but I found that the prices were often a little better. CheapCaribbean.com is also owned by the same parent company, Apple Leisure Group.

According to a 2023 employee benefits survey by the Society for Human Resource Management, only 8% of employers offer it. Still, those companies are out there.

How Do Unlimited Vacation Days Work?

With unlimited vacation days, you're free to take as much time off as you choose, as long as you get the job done. Of course, even though you can technically take “unlimited” time off, your manager will probably not be pleased if you're away from work 90% of the time since it could affect your team's performance. To get a better idea of the appropriate number of vacation days to use, ask your boss or colleagues what the norm is. If it's a maximum of three to four weeks, you'll want to stick to that.

“A lot of employees like the option of having unlimited (paid time off) but don't utilize it as much as you would think,” says Angela Tait, people operations strategist and founder of Tait Consulting. She compares unlimited paid time off to amenities at an apartment complex: They're the shiny objects that draw you in when applying for the apartment (or job), but hardly anyone uses them after moving in (or getting hired).

To avoid letting unlimited benefits go to waste, Tait encourages you to “utilize the PTO given to take breaks throughout your time at the company.” And as long as you “ensure that your work is covered while you’re out of the office,” she says, there's no need to feel like you're abusing the policy.

10 Apps That Will Make The Most Of Your Vacation In 2024

I f you've ever spent time at a networking event, made small talk at your kids' soccer games, or scrolled through a dating app, you'll know that "travel" is something almost everyone will tell you they enjoy. Couple that with an attachment to our smartphones that borders on co-dependent, and it's no surprise to learn that travel apps are a hot commodity. Some of the best innovations in travel come in the form of apps. Staying in touch with people at home, travel planning, staying organized on the road, or connecting with other travelers? Not only is there an app for that, there are many apps for that. 

To help you sort through the plethora of what's out there, here are some travel-ready apps to make your vacation a blast. We've sourced suggestions from people who travel for a living and those who leave their local area only rarely, so no matter how often you jet-set, there is an app for you.

If your cell plan doesn't include international roaming, you can get slammed with steep fees for using mobile data outside your own country.

There are a few ways to get around roaming charges, including buying a local SIM card for the country you are traveling in, using a Wi-Fi stick , or investing in a dual SIM phone, like those from Samsung, Apple, or Google. One of the easiest and cheapest options though, is an eSIM app like Airalo . Airalo was one of the first in the eSIM game and continues to be popular with travelers. Fans of the app point to how easy it is to download and get started quickly, and how much it saves in fees. On the other hand, some users have noticed a discrepancy in how well it works in different countries. One reviewer on TrustPilot states "We do NOT recommend this plan given the extremely poor performance in Vietnam" despite noting excellent service in Hong Kong. 

Airalo is a paid service, available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Google Maps is often the default app travelers reach for when navigating new territory. It's a trusted resource for a lot of reasons, including the ease of finding reviews and info for even very small businesses. But it's not the only map app out there, nor is it the best in every situation. The main advantage of Maps.me over Google Maps is that it is based on user-generated information. Particularly for folks who are getting around on foot, this "boots on the ground" approach is excellent and more direct than reporting problems to Google Maps . It also means that if you find a cool place on your travels and want to make sure other travelers can find it, you can add it to a map.

Like Google Maps and other useful way-finding apps, you can download maps and bookmark points of interest for offline use, although the background information on locations is not as robust as on Google Maps. Maps.me also allows you to access various modes of transportation while offline, which Google doesn't. 

Maps.me is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Cash's position as king is increasingly precarious. On your travels, you'll find cashless options in places you might not expect. The mass availability of mobile payment platforms like Square means you may be able to whip out your phone or card at Swiss coffee carts or Mexican street vendors. Wise (formerly Transferwise) lets you move between currencies seamlessly. Wise lets you operate in 40 currencies, which is particularly handy if you are traveling to several different countries. They advertise charges that are less than the major banks. However, some users have complained about complications with money transfers, so be forewarned if you intend to use this app for sending money. 

Of note to travelers is the option to get an actual bank card that can function as an international debit card with a nominal conversion fee (not all bank cards can pay by debit in countries other than your home base.) Or, save a step and scan your phone to pay from your Wise account. 

Wise is available on the App Store and from Google Play. There is no charge to download the app, but fees are charged for some banking activities.

If you are going to be traveling from place to place on your vacation, you will want the Rome2Rio app on your phone. Enter your destination and departure location, and the app spits out the options and approximate costs for each leg of your journey. For instance, if you are in Edmonton, Canada, and want to get to the Thai island of Ko Yao Yai, the app will suggest six options, labeling the best, cheapest, and fastest combination of flight, minibus, and ferry. You can't purchase tickets through the app, although there are links to book accommodation that take you to Booking.com. Being able to purchase travel fares through the app would make things easier, especially if they were offered in a package, but the absence of that feature means you can investigate and compare prices from different booking operators , so we are putting it in the win column.

Rome2Rio is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick Steves is recognized as a top voice in travel guides. His down-to-earth approach to travel has endeared multitudes of followers to him, spawning an industry of books, television shows, and a sprawling web presence that features how-to guides, articles, and an active travelers' forum. On top of all that, he has a free app for self-guided walking tours through many of Europe's top sights called Rick Steves Audio Europe . Reviewers of the app give it a high rating (4.7 on Google Play and 4.3 on the App Store) using superlatives like "This app is GOLD," and comparing the quality of the tours to paid audio tours. On the downside, it is difficult to sync the app on multiple devices, so if you are in a group you may all be at slightly different parts of the tour, which can be mildly annoying. There are a bunch of tour sites, with more added periodically.

The audio tours and accompanying maps are downloadable, so you don't need to worry about burning through mobile data or needing to rely on Wi-Fi. Rick Steve Audio Europe is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

How many trips come vividly back to life in your mind just by thinking about that one excellent bowl of Cacio e Pepe pasta or sun-drenched sip of a Paloma? Exploring a place through its flavors and discovering new spots to eat is a beloved part of travel. In Europe, TheFork (the French version is called LaForchette) is the go-to app for crowd-sourced restaurant reviews. Previously, the app also covered Australia, but at the start of 2024, it was announced they will be pulling out of Oz.

You can find Michelin-starred restaurants with months-long wait lists or little hole-in-the-wall spots by searching the name of the eating establishment, the city or neighborhood you want to eat in, or the kind of cuisine you are craving.

The app is worthy of its space on your phone just for the restaurant listings and reviews, but if you want to explore more of the capabilities, there are ways to expand its usefulness. You can make reservations, register to collect points, access discounts and specials at select spots, and pay through the app. TheFork is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Looking for a little love on the road? The Fairytrail app might be the ticket to romance (or ROAMance) you are looking for. Aimed at digital nomads and van life devotees, the app is a nice addition to the dating lives of travelers of all stripes. Members are evaluated and assigned a fairytale character similar to enneagram-slash-Myers-Briggs personality types, which is a new and novel approach compared with other iPhone dating apps or Android dating apps .

Because the app is focused on people with nomadic lifestyles, matches are location-independent. The idea is that users of the app will be willing to travel to each other to meet and date. There is a setting that allows an extra layer of matching: dream places to visit. If you so choose, before chatting with a match you need to have an overlapping "bucket-list" destination. Previously, this was an unavoidable step but became an optional setting after it was changed in response to frustration expressed by reviewers. The app is being redesigned in 2024 and soliciting feedback from users. Stay tuned, it seems more happy endings are in store! Fairytrails is free to download with in-app purchases and is available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Price Scanner And Converter

A very unpleasant aspect of vacationing in another country is coming home to a shocking credit card bill. Part of the problem is the tendency of holidaymakers to spend like money isn't real, but the other problem is how difficult it is to calculate prices into your own currency. Sure, you can come up with shortcuts to do quick math, but that gives you an estimate rather than an exact cost. To help, there are many different currency converter apps out there, with features like real-time rate calculation and offline capability. The somewhat clunky-named Price Scanner and Converter takes it one step further by using your phone's camera to scan prices and display them automatically in your preferred currency (out of 150 global currencies.) New iPhone cameras also have a similar capability, but it isn't as seamless a process as using this app.

This price scanning app isn't presently available on Google Play, although there are similar apps to be found. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly mediocre, so if you are on team Android, your best bet may be to download a regular currency converter and enter in prices the old-fashioned way.

Searching through your emails for confirmations and itineraries isn't an efficient way to access your travel information. And good luck if you have used your work email for some of your planning and your personal email for others. What if you are offline when you need to find your tour details? Nightmare fuel. Tripit has created a simple user experience, allowing you to forward all those endless travel planning emails to be arranged into an easily accessible itinerary in a single spot, which you can access from any of your devices.

Other features of this include the ability to load PDFs, QR codes, and other travel documents to your Tripit travel folder. There are helpful navigation tools, like airport maps, neighborhood safety ratings, and nearby places. You can share your travel plans and sync them to your calendar. For $49 a year (or a free 30-day trial) you can upgrade to Tripit Pro for enhanced travel aid, including notifications to help keep you on track and on time. 

Tripit is free to download from the App Store and from Google Play, and you can upgrade to the premium Tripit Pro on the Tripit website or in the app.

Mobile Passport Control

The latest app from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol goes by the wildly creative name, " Mobile Passport Control ." It's a no-nonsense app with a no-nonsense name that allows users to streamline the customs experience. Rather than filling out declarations forms, users enter their information into the app and send it to border officials so they can access it as soon as they get to customs. You can do this immediately upon arrival, say as your plane is taxiing to the gate.

The app is for United States citizens and Canadians with a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa who are entering the USA at one of 33 American airports, 11 preclearance sites, and four seaports. It works in tandem with your passport, but it doesn't replace it.

As a bonus, some sites allow those with the Mobile Passport Control app to use their own (almost always shorter!) line or expedited Global Entry lines at passport control. You can enter family members on the same app and there is no approval process, just download and go.

A previous iteration of the app had a premium, paid version, but this is no longer the case. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play.
