When you’re miles from anywhere, a portable power bank can quickly become your very best friend.

Giving an extra burst of battery life to your cell phone or iPad can keep you amused for longer, or more importantly, ensure that you’re always able to get in touch with the rest of the world.

Size and Weight

Power bank size

Your power bank is designed to be portable, otherwise, what’s the point?! With this in mind, the physical size and weight of it will be major factors in considering which one is right for you.

The charger should be able to fit neatly in the same space as your cell phone; otherwise, you’ll have one in your pocket while carrying the other in your hand — not cool!

Bottom Line: Look for one that will fit neatly in your pocket, purse, or backpack . While power banks should have a sturdy feel about them, they shouldn’t be uncomfortably heavy, so opt for one that’s light enough not to weigh you (or your pockets) down.

Milliamp (mAh)

The power capacity that your power bank kicks out is measured in milliamp-hours or “mAh.” The amount of mAh available will define how much charge you can expect to get out of your power bank.

Common capacity ratings range from 2,000mAh to 20,000mAh and in some cases, even as high as 40,000mAh. To give you a rough idea of how the amount of mAh juice in the bank affects what you can charge and how often, consider the following:

  • An iPhone 7 can be charged approximately 6 times with a 20,000mAh power bank
  • A Samsung Galaxy S8 can be charged approximately 4.5 times with a 20,000mAh power bank
  • An iPad mini can be charged approximately 4 times with a 20,000mAh power bank

Think about what devices you need a power bank for and how long you’ll be away from a power outlet. If you just need something to keep your phone topped up a couple of times a day, a 5,000mAh or 10,000mAh will do the job just fine and it will be physically smaller, too.

Hot Tip: Most airlines will cap power banks at 20,000mAh while some will allow larger. Always check with your airline as to what the maximum capacity requirements are.

Inputs (1A, 2A, or 2.4A)

Power Bank

At some point, your power bank will need charging up to ensure it can provide the backup charge power you need. What you want is a nice, quick recharge speed that means you can get back out there without having to be attached to a wall socket for hours on end.

The input charging speed is dependent on the type of wall charger used. A standard wall charger with a 2A output would recharge the power bank twice as fast as one with only a 1A output. For this to happen, your power bank would need to offer a 2A input.

While some do offer this, many still rely on a 1A input which will take longer to reach a full charge.

Hot Tip: Newer power banks can be charged even more quickly with the addition of a 2.4A input option. Look out for these if you want the fastest charge on the market.

Stay Connected with USB Port Smart Luggage

Two people sitting down charging their phone in the USB port on their luggage

Staying connected while away from home is a priority travelers take seriously. It’s not just about charging your tablet to be entertained in flight. Like it or not, our devices have become our lifeline to the world, tasked with everything from tracking our whereabouts to holding our confirmation codes and boarding passes.

Getting stuck with a dead phone or laptop can derail any trip, especially when you’re depending on your phone for directions, checking in with work or family, or even getting a ride. It’s no wonder that smart luggage with USB charging.

Are “Smart” Suitcases the Same Thing as Luggage with USB Ports?

In 2018, US-based airlines banded together to ban smart luggage from travel in or on their airplanes due to concerns over the risk of exploding lithium ion batteries.

They did not ban the batteries themselves, and that’s a good thing, since most laptops and tablets are powered by these cells. Instead, the airlines took direct aim at luggage with integrated, non-removable batteries–often referred to as “smart luggage.”

This smart luggage travel ban put consumers–and some luggage companies–in a tailspin. Pricey smart bags with built-in USB chargers, location tracking, LED lights, and other “smart” features included were suddenly on the no-fly list–unless the power banks could be removed by the passenger prior to flight.

Regardless of whether it was carry-on luggage or being checked in, any bag with a built-in battery that was not removable was grounded. Meanwhile, luggage with features like USB charging ports connected to removable batteries were, and still are, approved by the FAA.

USB charging port

According to the FAA and the Transportation Security Authority (TSA), carry-on suitcases as well as checked baggage are cleared for takeoff, as long as passengers transport the battery pack with them in the airplane cabin during flight.

Today, power banks, backup battery packs and all other lithium-ion batteries continue to be expressly prohibited in the cargo area where luggage is held under the plane. Instead, passengers must remove any batteries from their checked luggage to be carried onboard with them in the cabin. Carry-on suitcases with chargers and removable battery packs are also good to go.

How Do Bags with USB Ports Work?

The term “USB Luggage” refers to luggage with USB ports built into the design of the bag.

USB charging port

Luggage with USB charging ports is super convenient and lets you charge your devices wherever you are without fumbling around for the battery pack.

Travelpro® luggage with USB ports keeps you and your bags connected and compliant at once. Instead of juggling with cords or awkward push buttons, your power bank is stored in a dedicated compartment, easily accessed through an external zippered pocket.

Another great thing about the design of Travelpro® USB Luggage is how adaptable it is. Some other luggage companies build the power bank into the luggage, which limits you to using their battery pack only. If the battery fails, you are stuck having to buy and retro-fit replacement parts. Not ideal.

On the other hand, Travelpro® USB luggage gives you the freedom to use any power bank that fits in the pocket and adheres to FAA requirements. As stated on the TSA website : "One spare battery, not exceeding 300 watts hours, or two spare batteries, not exceeding 160 watt hours each" are allowed. This also means that you can easily replace any power bank with a second backup battery when needed for any reason.

As an innovator among luggage companies, Travelpro® is also the first to reach beyond the standard USB port to offer luggage with external USB A & C ports and fast-charge capabilities.

USB A and C Ports

This addition of USB A & C ports eliminates the need for USB A/C adapters, an added convenience when less equipment means more convenience. Now, Travelpro® luggage with the USB A & C port technology lets you power just about any type of mobile device on the market. Plus, fast charge capabilities mean powering up on the go is quicker than ever.

Our Travelpro® Platinum® Elite Carry-On Expandable Hardside Spinner and its smaller companion, the Travelpro® Platinum® Elite Compact Carry-On Hardside Spinner are two of the newest bags with the USB A & C fast-charging capable ports. This lets you power your electronics on the go and the external battery pocket (patent pending) is hidden inside the expansion feature for easy access and FAA compliance (powerbank not included).

These sleek and stylish bags are built with ultra-strong polycarbonate shells, anti-theft TSA-approved locks, and the PrecisionGlide™ System, which combines a comfortable Contour Grip, sturdy PowerScope Lite Handle, and eight MagnaTrac® self-aligning magnetic spinner wheels. Their split-shell design also has two divider panels with built-in pockets. A water-resistant interior pocket doubles as a laundry bag, letting you separate dirty or damp clothing from the rest of the packed contents.

The Platinum® Elite Compact Business Plus Carry-On Expandable Hardside Spinner takes it a step further. The Business Plus Spinner has the same features included in the regular and compact Platinum® Elite carry-ons with the addition of a patent-pending exterior pocket designed for padded laptop protection and easy access to electronics.

Other USB luggage options include briefs and backpacks, wheeled totes and non-rolling totes, soft sided carry-on luggage with spinner wheels, and Rollaboard® bags.

The Travelpro® Crew™ Executive Choice™ Large Backpack and Medium Top Load Backpack are commuters’ favorites. Both backpacks have a USB A & C charging port, dedicated pocket for storing your power bank (not included), tons of built-in organization, and padded laptop storage.

Crew Executive Choice 3 Medium and Large Backpack with USB port

All about the battery

Some Away Carry-Ons have a removable 37-watt lithium-ion battery located underneath the handle. The battery is allowed in the cabin and can be carried onto any flight.

We know that plans (and airline policies) are subject to change, which is why we designed the battery to be quickly removable from the start, making it compliant (and convenient) at any airport in the world. As more people traveled with our Carry-Ons and told us about their experiences, we learned that many of our customers wanted to be able to remove the battery even faster, so we developed a battery that could be instantly ejected.

If you have a Carry-On with our original battery module and would like to install an ejectable battery module in it, we have 3 free ways for you to make the switch. Learn more here.

Why would I need to remove the battery?

  • If you're checking your Carry-On If you check or gate-check your Carry-On, you are required to remove the battery and bring it into the cabin with you (where you can keep using it to charge your devices).
  • If you’re flying out of Asia We recommend removing the battery before you go through security in Asia—they have different airport security regulations, so this will make your trip a little smoother. You can replace it once you’re through.
  • If you’re carrying on a Delta or United Airlines flight If you are carrying onto a Delta or United Airlines flight, the gate agent may ask you to demonstrate that the battery is removable. You can easily remove the battery from our Carry-Ons and bring it into the cabin with you (where you can keep using it to charge your devices).

How do I remove the battery?

If you have a Carry-On with our original design, the battery doesn’t eject but it can still be removed in seconds. Just unzip the interior lining and use the included TSA-approved screwdriver to open the port and slide the battery out. If you need any help or a new (free!) screwdriver, let us know at [email protected]

Want to get an ejectable battery installed in your Carry-On for free? We have three ways for you to make the switch , so you can instantly remove your battery anytime for any reason.

Can I update the battery module in my Carry-On with an ejectable one?

Yes! If you purchased a Carry-On with our original battery module, we have three free ways to switch out the module in the Carry-On you already own and love with a new ejectable one (and two options for non-US customers too). Click here to pick the one that works best for your travel schedule.

Is this approved to fly?

All the way. Every Carry-On is approved to be carried on to any flight (with the battery in place) or to be checked (with the battery removed) and complies with all regulations from individual airlines, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), International Air Transport Association (IATA), and Department of Transportation (DOT), and meets UN/DOT 38.3 requirements.

What if the airline asks me about the battery?

Since these policies are still new, everyone at the airlines (or in line at security) might not be as up-to-date as you. If an employee ever has a question about your bag (or the rules), you can find the policies of the major US airlines below.

American Airlines "You can travel with these bags as a carry-on bag. If the bag needs to be checked or valeted you must remove the battery and carry it with you." From American Airline's policy page as of February 1, 2018.

Delta "Customers checking a smart bag with a removable lithium-ion battery must remove it and take it with them into the cabin. Customers carrying-on a smart bag containing a removable lithium-ion battery must remove it from the designed enclosure prior to boarding the aircraft. This is consistent with Delta's policy today requiring customers to place spare lithium-ion batteries in their carry-on luggage."

"Pack spare batteries in carry-on baggage." From Delta Airline's official statement and from their policy page as of February 13, 2018.

United Airlines "Effective July 9, lithium batteries that are installed in any checked or carry-on baggage must be removed by the customer. Once removed, these batteries can be transported on board." From United Airline's policy page as of July 9, 2018.

Can You Bring A Powerbank On A Plane? Your Essential Guide

If you’ve never flown with a power bank previously and you’re not sure what rules you need to follow, you’re definitely in the right place. I’ll tell you everything about flying with portable chargers, including how many power banks you can have in your bags!

Can you bring power banks in carry-on baggage or checked luggage, are there restrictions on the size and capacity of the chargers, and which power bank is the best for travel are just some of the questions I’ll answer in this detailed guide!

Can You Bring A Powerbank on A Plane?

The short answer is yes, you can absolutely bring a power bank on a plane. Powerbanks are allowed inside the cabin but they’re not allowed in checked baggage, so if you’re planning to pack some sort of portable charger for your electronic devices, you better bring it on the plane!

Limitations on Size & Capacity of Powerbanks

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has some rules and regulations regarding lithium metal and lithium-ion batteries. For non-rechargeable batteries, it’s 2 grams of lithium per battery, and for a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, it’s a maximum of 100 watt-hours (approximately 27,000 mAh).

It is possible to have a large lithium battery in your carry-on luggage (up to 160 watt-hours), but you need the airline’s approval, otherwise, they will likely confiscate it at the security checkpoint.

Additionally, TSA doesn’t really have a quantity limit for lithium batteries and portable chargers, so you could technically pack a suitcase full of them.

However, they do state that any spare batteries and power banks must be for the personal use of the passengers, and if you show up at security with 15 power banks, they will likely find you suspicious and think you’re trying to resell them for financial gain.

Best Powerbank for International Travel

I’ve been using the Anker PowerCore II for almost three years, and I’ve only got words of praise for it. It has a capacity of 20,000 mAh, which is enough to charge my smartphone four times. If your phone has a smaller battery capacity (mine’s 5000 mAh), you can probably get an extra charge or two from it.

Also, I haven’t really noticed a decline in the power bank’s capacity, despite almost daily use for the past three years.

What I like the most about this power bank is that it’s got two outputs for charging; a fast-charging 18W one, and a slower 12W output. Both are USB type-A outputs on my power bank, but there are plenty of newer models with USB type-C and other options.

Keep in mind that the PowerCore II is so old that it charges via a micro USB port, so you better stick with a newer model if you don’t want to carry three different cables around everywhere.

The only downside of this power bank is that it’s quite heavy, but that’s going to be the case with every 20,000 mAh external battery. The bigger the capacity, the heavier the power bank, and you’ll learn to live with it eventually. I’ve gotten used to the weight, plus the power bank is really compact and I’ve managed to fit it into some really small purses.

I’ve taken this power bank to probably half a dozen different countries, it’s been on road trips with me, on planes, boats, trains, and every other mode of transport. Also, not an outing goes by without someone asking me if I brought my power bank because they need to charge something.

Tips to Ensure the Safety of Your Powerbank During Travel

If I’m being perfectly honest with you, I’ve previously taken zero steps to ensure the safety of my power bank during travel. But I recognize I’m in the wrong here because power banks are sensitive to temperature and humidity, so if you’re in extremely hot or cold surroundings, the portable charger could malfunction.

It’s best to put it in a case and store it inside a dedicated pocket in your bag, so it doesn’t bounce around too much. It’s also smart to just take remove any cables from it when you’re not charging anything (something I honestly never do), and you should avoid stacking any heavy objects on top of the power bank.

Also, avoid storing it next to water, food, or any other liquids that could spill and get inside the opening of the portable battery. Most power banks have built-in safety features, so you don’t have to think too much about how you’re transporting the charger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are we allowed to bring multiple power banks on a plane.

You are allowed to bring multiple power banks on a plane, as long as each battery has a capacity of less than 100 watt hours, which is approximately 27,000 mAh. You will need airline approval to bring up to two power banks with a capacity of 101-160 watt hours (up to 43,000 mAh).

Is it required to declare my power bank at the security checkpoint?

If you’re traveling with a power bank that’s larger than 27,000 mAh, you will need to declare it because those power banks can only be brought on the plane with airline approval. I haven’t declared a smaller power bank at the security checkpoint, but I always take it out for the scanner.

Can I use my power bank during the flight?

Yes, you can use your power bank during the flight. Just keep your devices plugged in and let them charge, so you’re ready to take lots of photos and videos as soon as you land at your destination.

Do I need to fully charge my power bank before boarding the plane?

It’s recommended to fully charge the power bank before boarding the plane, but it is by no means necessary.

FAQ about Portable Power Bank

What features should i look for in a portable power bank.

When choosing a portable power bank, various features distinguish the best from the rest. Here are some important aspects to consider:

  • Capacity : This indicates how much power the bank can store and thus determines how many times you can charge your devices. If you use high-capacity devices like tablets or need multiple charges, look for a power bank with a higher capacity, usually above 10000mAh.
  • Portability : The size and weight matter if you plan to carry it around in your pocket or a small bag. Compact power banks are convenient for everyday use, while larger ones might be needed for extensive travel or high-capacity devices.
  • Output Ports : If you intend to charge multiple devices simultaneously, choose a power bank with more than one output port. Some power banks come with built-in cables for specific devices, which can be a bonus.

What size of a portable power bank do I need for camping?

When camping, you'll likely need a power bank with a high capacity to supply energy to your devices over a prolonged period of time. A longer trip will require a higher capacity. If you have high-capacity devices like tablets, digital cameras, or will be charging multiple smartphones, you should consider getting a power bank with a capacity of at least 20000mAh. If you only need to charge a smartphone, a lower capacity power bank may suffice.

Why does my portable power bank get warm while charging?

The warming of your power bank during charging is normal and results from the flow of electricity through its internal components, causing some energy to be lost as heat. This is heightened when the power bank charges another device simultaneously. However, if it becomes excessively hot, it might indicate a malfunction or poor quality battery, and can degrade its health over time.

Why is my portable power bank charging slowly?

Several factors can contribute to a slow-charging power bank. They include using an inappropriate charger, a worn-out battery, or the power bank's capacity is very large. Moreover, charging your device simultaneously can also slow it down. Another factor to consider would be cables. Some cables only support slow charging speeds, or they may have become damaged over time, which can limit the charging speed.

How should I maintain my portable power bank to increase its lifespan?

Proper care and handling can indeed prolong the life of your portable power bank. Here are some suggestions:

Avoid Overcharging: Make sure not to leave your power bank plugged in for extended periods past its full charge. Overcharging can result in diminished battery efficiency over time.

Store Properly:  If you're not going to use your power bank for an extended period, store it in a cool and dry place. It's best to keep it partially charged - around 50% to 60%.

Regular Use: Regular use can help maintain the battery's efficiency. If you won't use it frequently, at least try to fully charge and discharge it once every few months.

Use High-Quality Cables:  Low-quality charging cables can damage your power bank's battery over time.

7 Best Waterproof Power Banks For Travel 2024

Last Updated on 27/08/2023

best waterproof power banks for travel

In this guide to the best waterproof power banks, you will learn which power banks will give you the most charge for their weight and size as well as which can withstand a knock or getting wet. Find out how to choose a power bank size for maximum output and minimum weight.

For the backpackers, travelers, and digital nomads of today, technology is a staple that cannot be ignored.

Whether it be a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or camera, they all need a supply of power to run. Finding that power supply is not always easy in remote places, which is why we recommend getting one of these best waterproof power banks to keep you going along the way.

As someone who resisted smartphones for about 5 years or more, since I started using one I really appreciate how easy it is to stay in touch with people. This is especially true when I am traveling and either need to make plans on the fly or keep in touch with people at home – the phone is crucial to making this happen. It doesn’t take long to realize that the battery runs out pretty fast and so a power bank is essential for traveling.

Having relied on my smartphone to get me out of sticky situations on the road many times before, I can say that a power bank is one of the most well-used items in my backpack.

What are the Best Waterproof Power Banks For Travel?

The best power bank for travel is the one that provides the most power while weighing the least and being the smallest. Anker make over a dozen different models, all of which are among the top of their class.

Not only are the best waterproof power banks ideal for backpacking but they actually come in handy more often than you might think on a daily basis. Maybe you forgot to charge your phone last night and need to use it in the morning. No problem, just use your power bank.

7 Best Waterproof Travel Power Banks

Goal zero venture 75 19200mah outdoor portable charger, powerness u36 10050mah power bank charger with led, mycharge 6700mah waterproof external battery power bank, techsmarter 30000mah rugged & waterproof power bank, dark energy poseidon 10,000 mah waterproof power bank.

  • Hobest 12,000 mAh Waterproof Solar Charger Power Bank

EasyAcc 20,000 mAh Rugged Outdoor Power Bank

Goal Zero Venture 75 Portable Charger Power Bank 19200mAH 60W USB-C Power Delivery Port, 2 USB Outputs IP67 Rating 50 Lumens Flashlight

  • Capacity : 19,200 mAh
  • Waterproof Rating : IP67

The Goal Zero Venture 75 19200mAH Outdoor Portable Charger is perfect for outdoor living because it can power almost all of your small electrical devices (including laptops) and can be recharged using solar panels. If using a 60W USB-C Power Delivery port then you can recharge from 0 to 100% in 1.5 hours which is absolutely remarkable for a portable battery charger of this size.

With a massive 19,200 mAh capacity, you can recharge a large iPhone several times or keep a laptop running all day and night. It has a 50-lumen LED torch on it, which will last for days, if not weeks, if that is all you use it for. You can charge multiple devices at once using the dual output ports and settings to control the watts.

If we had to choose between this and the larger TECHSMARTER power bank, we would still choose this because it has a higher waterproof rating for added reassurance. If there is a chance your power bank will become submerged, then this is the one you want.

Outdoor Gear

  • Capacity : 10,050 mAh

The Powerness U36 10050mAh Power Bank Charger with LED is perfect for day trips and keeping in your backpack on hikes. The new carabiner fastener also means you can fasten it to your backpack if using it with a solar charger. Built to handle drops and falls, the rubber edging protects the most vulnerable areas and can take a real beating.

Dust, shock, and waterproof to down to 1 meter for 30 minutes, the battery is plenty big enough for 3-5 day adventures into the wild, and the wide lens LED torch helps on a night. A nice cheap option for chucking in your rucksack on day trips and overnighters and is easy to spot, so less likely to get lost in the woods.

If you only need a small waterproof power bank to use in emergencies to charge your phone, then this is perfect. It stays charged for weeks at a time if you don’t use it, and it doesn’t matter if it gets covered in dust, mud, or soaked in the rain.

myCharge Portable Charger Waterproof Power Bank Adventure 6700mAh Internal Battery Fast Charging Rugged Heavy Duty Outdoor Small USB Battery Pack External Backup for Apple iPhone, iPad, Android – Blue

  • Capacity : 6,700 mAh

The myCharge 6700mAh Waterproof External Battery Power Bank is even smaller than the Powerness U36 above, but it will still charge the largest of phones at least once or twice. It has been around for a while now but didn’t feature on our previous list of power banks . It is still one of the best waterproof power banks for sale and is now even cheaper than it was before.

It measures about 7 x 5 inches which is about the size of an adult hand, and is less than 2 inches deep, so it fits in a jacket pocket if needed. I must admit there are much smaller power banks out there with much more power, but waterproof portable chargers are always chunkier. One thing is for sure with the myCharge 6700mAh it is almost indestructible, and it stays charged for months.

Techsmarter 30000mah Rugged & Waterproof 20W USB-C PD Power Bank. Heavy Duty, Camping, Hiking, Tactical, Outdoor Portable Charger with Flashlight. Compatible with iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, iPad, Android

  • Capacity : 30,000 mAh
  • Waterproof Rating : IP66

The T ECHSMARTER 30000mah Rugged & Waterproof Power Bank is a rugged, waterproof power bank that is great for outdoor use and backpacking. The tough casing can withstand drops of up to 1 meter and has been tested to IP66 levels which is enough for all but full immersion underwater. The massive 30,000 mAh is enough for up to 13 full charges of most smartphones and is so powerful that it can be used with laptops and portable gaming devices.

If you need a waterproof power bank to use outdoors and last for multiple days at a time while still charging all your gadgets, this is 100% the one to get. It has a flashlight, different outputs, USB-C, and all the other essentials you might need. It is quite heavy and bulky but if you need a lot of power, then this is the best available.

Dark Energy Poseidon 10,000 mAh Waterproof Power Bank

  • Capacity : 10,000 mAh
  • Waterproof Rating : IP68

The Dark Energy Poseidon Waterproof Power Bank is our number one choice for traveling because of the fact that it almost indestructible. With the highest possible IP rating, you can be sure that this portable battery pack will work no matter where you take it. The 10,000 mAh battery can charge most smartphones three to six times and will recharge in just over a couple of hours. Featuring a built-in light and two charging ports with a 3.4 amp output.

Hobest  12,000 mAh  Waterproof Solar Charger Power Bank

Hobest 12,000 mAh Waterproof Solar Charger Power Bank

  • Capacity : 12,000 mAh

The Hobest Solar Charger is one of the best waterproof power banks for outdoor enthusiasts because not only can it hold enough charge to charge your phone up 3 or more times, it can also be recharged using the sun. But the features don’t end there. Dual charging ports with 1A and 2.1A outputs for smartphones and tablets, LED power level display, and dual-LED torch lights with three modes. The casing is tough and sold as waterproof but no IP rating is given.

EasyAcc 20,000 mAh Rugged Outdoor Power Bank

  • Capacity : 20,000 mAh

The EasyAcc 20,000 mAh rugged outdoor power bank is our close third choice because of its larger capacity and overall reliability. It has been around for a while and is trusted by many outdoor people to charge their personal electronics on the go. Ideal for multiple devices like your smartphone, GPS tracker, and GoPro camera. With dual charging ports and a built-in LED light, you have some great features to work with. With the 20,000 mAh capacity, you can expect to charge any smartphone at least five to seven times as well as being big enough to charge iPads and tablets up to two times.

Features to Look for in a Power Bank

There are a few things to take into consideration when choosing the best waterproof power bank for you, and it is not always clear what they mean. Below is a breakdown of some of the features to look out for and what they mean in terms of performance. Bigger doesn’t always mean better, but if you have specific requirements, then this power bank guide should help you figure out the specs.

Capacity is the amount of power that can be charged and stored in the unit and is measured in mAh (milliamp hour). To give you an idea of what to look for, I would say that anything below 5,000 mAh will likely be too small for your needs, and anything over 20,000 mAh would be considered to have a very large capacity. I personally like to mix and match a large and a small power bank on longer backpacking trips, but a medium-sized power bank for travel works well, too (12,000 mAh – 18,000 mAh).

Charge Cycles

This relates directly to the capacity but is worth knowing before you buy. For example, you might get three full charges for a smartphone but only one charge for a laptop. Knowing what you can expect to get out of a portable battery pack is important and can often be estimated fairly accurately using the capacity rating.

Charge Time

‘The larger the capacity of the battery, the longer it takes to charge’ is a fair enough statement to make. But some batteries are notoriously slower than others, and understanding how long it will take to recharge your power bank is good to know before you buy. Most brands make the charge time available in the specifications, but if not, you can usually read some Amazon reviews to find out.

IP Rating – Waterproof,  Shock and Dust Resistance

Ingress Protection or IP Rating is the standard referencing system for the level of dust and water protection on a device. The first number refers to solid particle protection (dust), and the second refers to liquid ingress protection (water). As you can see from the chart below, an IP68 would be the highest possible rating. However, most of the best waterproof power banks are rated to IP67, which is more than enough protection for rugged outdoor use.

Power Bank IP Rating Meaning

The size of the unit can be important for people who are short of space in their backpacks or plan on keeping it in their pockets at times. You don’t really want to be carrying a big old brick of a battery around with you anyway. Most power banks are very compact and portable, but if you check the dimensions before you buy, there won’t be any surprises when it arrives.

Much like the size of the power bank, the weight can be an important factor for lightweight packers and distance hikers who cannot afford the extra weight. Sometimes, two small power banks can weigh less than one large power bank of the same combined capacity, which can be worth taking into account.

Input and Output Ports

How does it charge, and how does it recharge? How many output sockets are there? Can they be used more than one at a time? What is the amp output? If you have a specific use in mind for the rugged power bank, then you should make sure that it has the ability to fulfill that task before you buy.

Some power banks have an in-built LED torch which is a fantastic benefit to have in your bag, and used as a flashlight alone would last a very long time. Even a small charge display can be a big advantage, as knowing how much power you have left allows you to ration it better.

Are Anker Power Banks Waterproof?

Anker power banks are not waterproof and nor do they claim to be. The casing is made from waterproof materials but does not have a waterproof construction. Water can get in through the joints and the charger input, so it won’t fare well if submerged. If you spill water on it or it gets a little bit wet in the rain though, you should be ok.

What to do if Your Power Bank Gets Wet

If your power bank gets wet and it isn’t waterproof, then the best steps you can take is to dry it with a towel and try and shake as much water out as possible. Then you should submerge the power bank in uncooked rice, which will draw the moisture out. You can also try and use sustained low heat, like wrapped in a towel on top of a radiator.

Customer review: “This is a gorgeous bag, and the leather is so dreamy *but* you will be forced to pick and choose what you want to carry as the interior is quite small. I’m able to fit my iPhone pro, small wallet, lip balm and car key…and that’s pretty much it. But the look is worth it!”

While we love cameras, camera bags are usually ugly, point blank. You’re not paparazzi, and although you are a traveler, you wouldn’t want anyone to think of you as a tourist , right? This fashionable find from Isabel Marant is the solution.

Dimensions: Height: 5.25 inches; width: 3 inches; length: 7.25 inches

Material: Leather, silver, textile

Customer review: “What a beautiful and versatile bag, both in terms of style and colour. It's surprisingly roomy for the size. The leather is absolutely beautiful and buttery soft. Super happy with my purchase!”

It wouldn’t be a complete crossbody roundup without some form of nylon Prada. Similar to the ever-practical Re-Edition 2005 Re-Nylon Bag , this quilted flap-over bag comes complete with a detachable mini zipper pouch.

Dimensions: Height: 17 centimeters; width: 24 centimeters; length: 8 centimeters

Material: REPREVE recycled polyester

Customer review: “Recently took this bag on my weeklong trip to Amsterdam...It worked so well. It comfortably fit my small Nalgene water bottle, wallet, sunscreen, sunglasses—all the necessities. It’s not huge but it could also fit small souvenirs picked up throughout the day such as magnets, small jewelry items, candy, etc. Highly recommend!”

Here at ELLE, we love MZ Wallace . This perfectly sized Sutton is just the latest obsession. We scrolled through pages and pages of five-star customer reviews in search of any “cons” to no avail.

Dimensions: Height: 8.5 inches; length: 10.5 inches; depth: 4 inches
