University of Michigan University of Michigan free

As the crown jewel of Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan boasts many of the city's top attractions. Start your visit by touring the manicured grounds of the campus, which was opened in Ann Arbor in 1837 (though the school got its start in Detroit in 1817). U-M has a total enrollment of about 48,000 students and stretches across a massive 3,207 acres. You'll find University of Michigan properties dispersed throughout Ann Arbor, though the main campus is centrally located within the city near parks, museums, bars and dining establishments.

When it comes to things to do on campus, you won't be left scratching your head. The university is home to 30 stunning libraries and more than 16 museums, including the Museum of Natural History , the Museum of Art , the Kelsey Museum of Archeology, Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Nichols Arboretum , the Herbarium and the Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry. Other points of interest include the William W. Cook Law Quadrangle (a 10-acre compound comprising pristine green space and impressive gothic-style buildings), the Gerald R. Ford Library and Hill Auditorium (a classical music concert hall). You'll even find a hotel and restaurants on the premises. Campus visitors praised the gorgeous architecture and were wowed by the sheer size of the university. They also enjoyed the many museums on-site.

University of Michigan Museum of Natural History University of Michigan Museum of Natural History free

The Museum of Natural History was founded in 1956, though the university began collecting and storing artifacts and specimens as early as 1837. Then called the Exhibit Museum, it was officially renamed the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History in 2011, and in 2019 it moved into a brand-new facility on campus.

Popular exhibits include "Dynamic Space," "On the Trail of the Mastodons" (where male and female mastodon skeletons stand side by side), and "Under the Microscope," which explores life at the cellular level. There is also an on-site planetarium. Visitors to the museum were impressed by the detailed exhibits and huge amount of information in the new facility. They extolled the nicely designed space and said their children loved the hands-on activities dispersed throughout.

University of Michigan Museum of Art University of Michigan Museum of Art free

The University of Michigan Museum of Art, or UMMA, opened in 1909 as a war memorial, alumni office and art space. Today, it is one of the oldest (and largest) campus museums in the United States, holding more than 21,000 pieces of art. Collections include Asian, African and Western art in all sorts of mediums, including photography, glass and metal. Permanent exhibits feature the works of artists like Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. The museum also has an auditorium for lectures, film screenings and other events. Recent travelers found the museum to be comprehensive and informative. For many, UMMA's small size worked to their advantage; the manageable footprint allowed patrons to get through much of the collections.

UMMA is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays and on university holidays. Admission is free of charge, and street parking is available. Other nearby points of interest include the Law Quadrangle, the Kelsey Museum of Archeology and the student union. Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum free

The Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum are operated by the same organization on the grounds of the University of Michigan . The Matthaei Gardens feature 11 outdoor spaces with bonsai, medicinal plants and seasonal blooms, as well as approximately 3 miles of scenic trails. There is also an indoor conservatory that is open year-round – ideal if you are visiting during Michigan's icy months. At Matthaei's visitor center, you will find maps and other information, as well as restrooms and a snack bar. Recent travelers had nothing but positive things to say about the expansive grounds and gorgeous flowers, noting it is a great attraction for all ages.

Meanwhile, Nichols Arboretum is a joint operation between the City of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan. It is a 123-acre property with varying landscapes, ranging from wetlands to forests to glacial grounds. At the arboretum, travelers can hike up to panoramic views and enjoy the tranquility of nature, without venturing far from civilization. Recent travelers remarked Nichols is a delightful hidden gem, and many said the Peony Garden – which typically blooms between late May and mid-June – is a must-see.

Huron River Water Trail Huron River Water Trail

The Huron River Water Trail covers 104 miles through Michigan's Lower Peninsula and welcomes more than 2 million visitors annually. The paddling zones of the river range from raging rapids to calm waters. Ann Arbor is the largest of five Trail Towns where visitors can enter the river, find amenities like parks and boat storage and frequent nearby campgrounds, hotels and dining establishments. While paddling is available in the spring and summer, visitors can cross-country ski, snowshoe and ice skate in the area if they visit in the winter months.

The Ann Arbor region of the Huron River Water Trail comprises miles 53 to 46. Popular launch points along this section include the Argo Nature Area and Livery, as well as the Gallup Park and Livery. At Argo, travelers can rent canoes, kayaks and multiperson rafts to paddle downstream through beautiful scenery, placid ponds and Argo Cascades, which features adrenaline-pumping manmade drops and pools. At Gallup Park, choose between canoe, kayak, paddleboat and rowboat rentals for your river adventure. On shore, the park features a 3-mile asphalt trail, playgrounds, fishing spots, picnic areas and concession stands.

Kerrytown Kerrytown free

If you are looking for an authentic Ann Arbor culinary experience, Kerrytown is the place to find it. Named after County Kerry in Ireland, the district was part of the original Ann Arbor village dating back to the mid-1800s. In the 1960s, developers added a central shopping and dining area to the eclectic neighborhood and called it Kerrytown Market & Shops. Much of the architectural character from decades past still remains; visitors can expect to find brick buildings and sidewalks, original exposed beams, converted 19th-century factories and more.

Kerrytown Market & Shops is home to some of the city's most beloved dining mainstays, including the Ann Arbor Farmers Market and Zingerman's Deli, a local institution that's served up premium deli sandwiches (including its famous Reuben), cheeses, olive oils, smoked fish and more since 1982. Among other meat, fish and produce markets, you'll also find sit-down restaurants with cuisine ranging from vegan to Korean, plus a Sweetwaters coffee shop location.

Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum

Opened in 1982 in a historic fire station, the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is an interactive, family-friendly science center. It has attracted around 6 million visitors since its inception and aims to introduce children of all ages to the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields of study. Favorite exhibits include the "H2Oh" water play area in the Concourse and the "Michigan Nature" experience, which features an interactive nature wall and geology samples. Recent travelers spoke highly of the museum, saying it has something for toddlers all the way up to preteens. They also noted that the facility was clean and well-maintained.

The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is open seven days a week, though opening hours vary by day. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Tuesdays, the attraction opens up one hour earlier (9 a.m.), and on Thursdays, it stays open until 8 p.m. Sunday hours are noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free for toddlers 23 months and younger and $12.50 for adults and children ages 2 and older. Visitors who enter after 5 p.m. on Thursdays only pay $5 per person. To learn more, visit the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum's website .

Michigan Theater Michigan Theater

The Michigan Theater opened in 1928 as a combined vaudeville stage and movie house. It has undergone a few renovations over the years, and today offers audiences with three screening spaces to view films and live concerts. The Main Auditorium holds 1,600 people, the Screening Room has 200 seats and the Annex Cinema holds 60. The theater offers programming 365 days a year, and past visitors praised the old-timey feel of the theater, as well as the curated list of films and live acts. Still, not all patrons appreciated the retro space, noting that the seats were too tight for taller viewers and not as comfortable as the plush chairs in more modern theaters.

General admission tickets for films are $10.50 per person, while students, veterans, senior citizens and groups of 10 or more can secure tickets for $8.50. Matinee showings between Monday and Friday (before 6 p.m.) cost $7.50 per person. Ticket prices for live events vary, and parking is available in multiple nearby garages as well as on nearby streets. To learn more, visit the Michigan Theater's website . (And if you do decide to see a show, be sure to look out for one of Ann Arbor's famous fairy doors at this spot – and a miniature box office window, to boot.)

Nickels Arcade Nickels Arcade free

Located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor, Nickels Arcade is a cozy but upscale covered shopping area with a rich history. The indoor-outdoor complex began as a meat market owned by the Nickels family. After Tom Nickels inherited the market in the early 1900s, he repurposed the shop and expanded the facility to resemble the shopping arcades found in Europe at the time. Nickels completed the block in 1918 and different kinds of shops began opening within the complex.

Today, Nickels Arcade – which celebrated its centennial in 2017 – boasts both vintage and modern-day stores along its mosaic-tiled alley. Visitors can stop into the old-timey barbershop, which dates back to 1917, and grab a drink at the modern juice bar or coffee shop in the same trip. Recent travelers remarked that the block is worth visiting for a short stroll, and many praised the quality merchandise available at several of the shops – including VanBoven Clothing, which has been operated within the same family since 1927.

Essential Ann Arbor: The Awesome 8-Stop Downtown Walking Tour

  • April 9, 2021

tour ann arbor

Here’s the video:

And here’s a quick overview of what we’re going to check out in a little more depth. Feel free to link to a particular tour stop that piques your fancy.

  • The Parking Situation : EEK!!
  • Nickels Arcade
  • Comet Coffee : Super exceptional coffee in a city with a lot of exceptional coffee
  • UM Campus : A quick stroll (that you can make longer if you want)
  • Liberty Street Cinemas
  • Used Book Magic at the Dawn Treader Book Shop
  • 2 More Great Book Stores: Literati and Crazy Wisdom
  • Kerrytown : Super Cool Independent Shops galore
  • Zingerman’s Deli , the perfect place to replenish (and massively exceed) all those burnt calories

Essential Ann Arbor Downtown Walking Tour: Parking

Moving to Ann Arbor from New York City, as I did in 1999, I couldn’t believe how many people bitched about downtown parking. This was because I still hadn’t quite figured out that cars are Real Things, something easy to forget when you live in NYC. The parking situation has improved since then, as A2’s built a bunch of big structures where you can safely stash your auto. Take advantage of them, as parking on the street is still pretty rough—especially as pandemic restrictions ease up and more folks drive downtown.

Top recos for this tour: The Maynard Street parking structure, which is right across the street from our first stop, Nickels Arcade. We also like the lot next to the Public Library on 5th street just south of Liberty, or the structure on 4th and William.

Essential Ann Arbor Downtown Walking Tour, Stop #1: Nickels Arcade

Now head to Nickels Arcade , which stretches down a block between Maynard and State. Don’t let the name fool you: The very nice shops here ain’t cheap.

tour ann arbor

When I’m feeling flush, I’m a fan. Mix has really unique women’s clothes, which you’ll either think are super cool or overly arty. I bought a pleated silk dress here that is my absolute traveling go-to. It never, ever wrinkles and I’ll never have to do a “who wore it better?” thing because I’ve never seen one like it. Caravan Gift Shop, the Arcadian Antiques, Maison Edwards Tobacconist, Bivouac: just a few, all with great windows and worth a stop.

Essential Ann Arbor Downtown Walking Tour, Stop #2: Comet Coffee

Assuming you’re starting in the morning—or you just want to caffeinate for the rest of the trip, Comet Coffee is massively popular for good reason. The coffee’s outstanding.

tour ann arbor

I do love Comet, but I also love a lot of places where I get coffee when I’m in Ann Arbor: Sweetwaters on Liberty and at Kerrytown, Mighty Good on Main, Roos Roast on Liberty…there are more. If I’ve left out your favorite, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll add it.

Essential Ann Arbor Downtown Walking Tour, Stop #3: UM Campus

OK, you’ve either got your coffee in hand or you’ve finished it and you’re ready to roll. Walk through Nickels Arcade and you’ll be at the entry to a big part of the University of Michigan campus, the Diag. Here’s an excellent local guide with all kinds of cool trivia . The grounds themselves are lovely on a day with decent weather—Michigan actually gets a surprising amount of those in spring, summer and fall, and even winter can surprise you as long as the wind isn’t attacking you. (It’s not Chicago, but it can still be brutal.)

There are a number of excellent museums, include the UM Museum of Art. Even during the pandemic, with visits restricted to UM students and staff, there are cool things to look at through the windows, like this installation by South African artist Mary Sibande .

tour ann arbor

Across the street, you’ll find the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology . A couple of blocks away, the Museum of Natural Histor y has giant scary dinosaur bones. And, if Marathon Man is your all-time favorite movie, you might want to pop into the Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry . Say ah!

NOTE: The good folks at Sindecuse have this to say, which is great advice for any UM venues at this time: “Public visitors should check our website ( www.sindecusemuseum.org ) regarding our reopening to the public.  Now, due to COVID restrictions, our museum, which is located within the University of Michigan’s School of Dentistry, is not open to onsite public visitors.  However, we will address questions about the museum and the collection via email:  [email protected] .  We invite inquiring minds to check out our website, our blog posts, and browse images of some of the objects on our website:  https://sindecuse.pastperfectonline.com/randomimages .”

Bonus Stop: Nichols Arboretum

The Arb is an Ann Arbor legend, and one of the great treasures of the city. The thing is, it’s a short hike away from this tour, and easily eats up as many hours as you’d like to give it. We absolutely insist you visit the Arboretum—but give it plenty of time and don’t try to squeeze it into this particular tour unless you’re fully aware that you’ve just stretched a comfortable 3-4 hours into a full day. Which may be exactly what you want to do. Find out more at the Arb’s website .

Essential Ann Arbor Downtown Walking Tour , Stop #4: Liberty Street Cinemas

Having strolled around as much of the downtown campus as you want to take in—and fully aware that you’ve just seen a small fraction of the whole thing—head back to State Street. Right at the spot where Liberty street begins (or ends? It’s like that line in A Christmas Story ), you’ll find the State Street theater. Along with its sister, the Michigan , the State is THE place to get your art house cinema fix.

tour ann arbor

Saved from a wrecking ball several decades ago, the Michigan is a fully restored movie palace. While you may be able to look around the lobby, the best way to see it in all its glory is to watch a movie there.

tour ann arbor

Cramped and non-optimized for years, the State has been fully refurbished in the last few years. Both theaters are beginning to open again post-pandemic. Stop by to grab a schedule, or simply visit the website, which contains info on showtimes for all screens in both theaters.

Essential Ann Arbor Downtown Walking Tour , Stop # 5: The Dawn Treader

In an age where bookstores have been gnashed and mangled by the corporate jaws of Certain Companies—I’m being coy, A Certain Company—it’s a joy to open the door of the Dawn Treader and be surrounded by stacks and stacks of old books. Some of the fancy ones—including this “novelization” of The Man from U.N.C.L.E.—are, understandably, locked in glass cases. You can learn all about the store, as well as browse the collection and order online, at the Dawn Treader website .

tour ann arbor

Essential Ann Arbor Downtown Walking Tour , Stop # 6: 2 More Book Stores

Of course, Ann Arbor has even more book stores. Literati , one block west of Liberty on Washington, has been closed during the pandemic, but should be up and running soon; it features new books, with tons of very personal, sometimes hand-written recommendations as well as tons of cool in-store events (as long as deadly viruses aren’t raging round the state). Crazy Wisdom is open now (Main Street between Washington and Huron), and features all things new age; in addition to books on pretty much every alternative school of thought you can imagine, it has jewelry, meditation cushions, and, in non-pandemic times, a delightful tea room with the occasional concert. Click through on the respective links to find out current policies, and also just get to know two really cool stores.

tour ann arbor

Essential Ann Arbor Downtown Walking Tour , Stop # 7: Kerrytown

Around this point of our tour, you’ve meandered north to Kerrytown, a historic complex that houses all sorts of cool stuff: a year-round Saturday farmers market (obviously it’s much more active from spring to fall), an indoor market, another great coffee shop, Sweetwaters, and about a dozen delightful shops, nearly all of which are independently owned and operated. Find the full list of Kerrytown shops and eateries at this link.

We’re in particular crazy about Spun, “your neighborhood yarn shop,” and FOUND, a super cool home goods store . A leisurely stroll through Kerrytown will remind you that small, unique businesses can thrive. #lovelocal.

tour ann arbor

By the way, if you’ve already done Zingerman’s (see below), we LOVE Miss Kim . Here’s a graphic I made from a tasting menu some years back. It’s absolutely wonderful Korean food in a lovely space. There are many fine Ann Arbor restaurants, which we’ll cover in future posts. But Miss Kim is extra special.

tour ann arbor

Essential Ann Arbor Downtown Walking Tour , Stop # 8: Zingerman’s Deli

Miss Kim worship aside, people will seriously yell at you if you don’t at least check out Zingerman’s Deli, which is just across the street from Kerrytown on Detroit. Zing’s does own the Roadhouse, further west in a strip mall, as well as the big complex of shops on the south side of town on Airport road. But the Deli’s the original place, and it continues to delight.

ann arbor downtown walking tour

You can easily put together a picnic with their prepared salads, along with cheese, meat, bread, and sweets—Zingerman’s house made brownies and candy bars are ridiculously tasty—you can also be perfectly happy with one of the dozens of sandwiches. This is a Georgia Reuben, i.e., one made with turkey. There’s also the classic pastrami version and a vegan version with tempeh. This is, after all, Ann Arbor, which one friend swears was directly cloned from Berkeley, CA.

End of the Tour

This is, truly, just a smattering of what’s on offer in downtown Ann Arbor, and you’re sure to find your own favorites. Take pictures, tag me on insta and twitter (@headroamer), #annarbordowntown. And let me know what you love about this place in the comments. Enjoy!

Hello Ann Arbor, we are glad to be here.

  • Latest News

We are the city’s newest pedal (and battery) powered, sixteen passenger, fun seeking, party bike. The bike is also referred to as a commercial quadricycle under Michigan law, a pedal trolley, a PedalPub, and many other names. However, we wanted to let you all know, we’re not ALL about drinking tours and bar crawls. Don’t get us wrong, we’re absolutely interested in what the MANY  bars, restaurants, pubs, breweries, and distilleries in Ann Arbor have to offer. In fact, we have a pre-planned brewery tour, we’re working on a historical beer tour with Ann Arbor Beer Historian and Author  of  Ann Arbor Beer:  A Hoppy History of Tree Town Brewing , David Bardallis, AND our tour pick-up and drop-off location is Ann Arbor Distilling Co.!

Aside from these libation fueled journeys, we also understand there is a ton of culture in A2. That’s why we’ve decided to create a list of pre-planned tours which allows our passengers a variety of experiences. Our Restaurant Tour is one of my favorites! We make three stops on this tour which include a progressive dinner. Our first stop will cover your appetizer, next you’ll be served your main course, followed by dessert. The A2 Art tour is a great way to see the art on the streets of Ann Arbor while we pedal our way to the Ann Arbor Art Center, WSG Gallery and the University of Michigan Museum of Art (suggested donation of $10, but not required). Tailgate Tours will be available closer to Football season where we’ll hit three local sports bars and drop you at the place you’d like to watch Coach Harbaugh and the Wolverines dominate (we’re not permitted to go near the stadium, but if the Big House is your final destination, we’ll get you as close as we can. We’d also like to pass along the information about our Heady Tour. The Heady Tour is will take passengers to three of Downtown Ann Arbor’s head shops, The Green Door dispensary, and one final stop before heading back in case you have the munchies. What?!? Pedaling can work up an appetite! We will also work with you on custom tours. You pick three destinations and we’ll plan the route. OR come out on the bike during your scheduled time and we’ll make suggestions on where to go based on the things you like to do! We can hit an art gallery, a brewery, and call ahead for a meal at a restaurant if that’s what you’d like to do.

The tours are scheduled for two hours, with a half hour between time slots to make sure waivers are signed, drinks at AADC are finished, helmets are issued, etc. Why would someone want to use High Five Pedal Tours for their outing? Well, bachelorette parties are ALWAYS a great time, company team building/bonding, birthdays, anniversaries, a night out with your best friends, or even if you wanted to experience Ann Arbor in a way you’ve never experienced it. Whatever the occasion may be, we would love to have the opportunity to make it an unforgettable experience for you and your guests!

ABOUT JEFF CROCKETT:

jeff Crockett

Following two deployments (1969-1971) as an Electronics Officer on the USS Chicago (CG-11), Jeff earned an MA in Special Education at UM in 1973. From 1973 to 2010, he served as a Special Education teacher and teacher consultant for the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools until he retired. From the fall of 2020 to June 2011, Jeff provided software training for special ed teachers in the New York Public Schools. Then, from the fall of 2011 until the spring of 2019, he served as an Assistive Technology Coordinator for the Northville Public Schools where he developed educational communities using technology to help students access the curriculum.

His wife, Christine, and he are passionate historic preservationists and helped form the Old Fourth Ward Historic District Association. Christine is currently the President, and Jeff is the Communications Officer. Jeff also serves on the Board of the Ann Arbor Historical Foundation. In 2003, Jeff and Chris won the Governor’s Historic Preservation Award for work on their Victorian home. In 2020, Jeff helped form and assumed leadership of the Green Team, a group of volunteers who have created community gardens on four of the 14 plots surrounding the Library lot. The Green Team has partnered with the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and focused this year on adding native plants to attract pollinators. Since the Spring of 2023, Jeff has served as the Chair of the Bicentennial History Subcommittee. Since September 2023, Jeff has also served as the Secretary of the Library Green Conservancy.

TRANSCRIPTION:

Deb Polich: Thanks for tuning into this creative:impact episode on 89 one WEMU. I'm Deb Polich, president and CEO of Creative Washtenaw and your host. I am joined by Jeff Crockett of Ann Arbor. Like most of our creative:impact guests, Jeff's background is varied. He's a veteran, a former special ed teacher who eventually specialized as a technology coordinator for educational communities using technology. Jeff is also an active and passionate historic preservationist, which brings him to creative:impact. Jeff is serving as the chair of Ann Arbor's Bicentennial History subcommittee. Jeff, welcome to the show!

Jeff Crockett: Well, thank you very much!

Deb Polich: We're glad to have you here. So, founded in 1824, Ann Arbor started celebrating its bicentennial in January. I will remind listeners that they can follow two A200 websites for updates. A2bicentennial.org is Destination Ann Arbor site and includes many of the events and resources happening during the bicentennial. The other is aadl.org--Ann Arbor District Library's Ann Arbor 200. It's hosted by the library and is accumulating 200 special interest releases about Ann Arbor's history. Jeff, what is the role of the Bicentennial History Subcommittee?

Jeff Crockett: Well, to engage the community in looking at the past and basically creating different kinds of projects. I am pleased to say that this is a community effort of 24 volunteers who have been working since 2022. And a little shoutout to you and Russ, because you helped start the ball rolling by being part of the initial steering committee and then connecting with the city to get this going. You are now on the executive committee. So, a little shout out to you first!

Deb Polich: Well, you made that happen. So, thank you. So, what are some of the projects you and your team have been working on?

Jeff Crockett: Well, the most exciting one for me personally is the Bicentennial quiz. It started off, basically with a request from Amy Carbo to develop ten trivia questions for the bicentennial kickoff. And I thought about it overnight, and I said, "Ten? Let's go for 200!" And everybody would say, "No way!" So, the secret was community outreach. So, we have outreached 8 or 9 different communities--ethnic and community backgrounds--and we pulled together a wonderful group of people who developed questions that respected the diversity of Ann Arbor. And if you're asked me exactly why I got into this, it was to celebrate our diversity and also to recognize the achievements of people in the past who have gone--who have been lost--to history. So, the most important one is the bicentennial quiz. And by the way, creative industries are well-represented.

Deb Polich: Oh, I'm sure of it.

Jeff Crockett: Over 10% of our questions have to do with the creative world.

Deb Polich: Oh. Thank you. So, putting you on the spot. Got a question for me? See if I can pass it or not?

Jeff Crockett: Actually, I do. Okay?

Deb Polich: Okay. Now I'm nervous.

Jeff Crockett: And don't worry about it, because I would probably get about 10% of these questions right being a white guy. So, just don't feel bad. What Hispanic American film producer from Ann Arbor has produced "Bride Plus One," "Get Real," "Naked Angel," and Dream Maker"?

Deb Polich: Christina Hemingway-Morales...or Morales-Hemingway.

Jeff Crockett: You got that right.

Deb Polich: Yes.

Jeff Crockett: You didn't even need the multiple choice. You got that right. I'm impressed!

Deb Polich: I happen to know Christina. She's great. 89 one WEMU's creative impact continues with Jeff Crockett, chair of Ann Arbor's bicentennial history committee--subcommittee. I should say. Jeff, almost everyone loves a party, and birthday parties are especially fun. I hear there's one coming up in a few weeks. When and where will it take place?

Jeff Crockett: Oh, I'm so glad you asked. It's on May the 25th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Liberty Plaza. And what I'm excited about is that the theme is "Honoring the Diversity of Ann Arbor's History." So, this has been a joint effort. I'm pleased to say we have co-sponsors include Destination Ann Arbor with Sarah Miller, Library Green Conservancy's Rita Mitchell, State Street District with Angela Heflin, and the Kemp House's Ann Dilcher. So, we've put together a really wonderful program, including eight speakers reflecting the diversity in Ann Arbor, speaking about what the bicentennial means to me. This is going to be fantastic! And we also have the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor with Benjamin Cohen, who's going to be having his group sing Ann Arbor songs. Then we're going to sing Happy Birthday with the birthday cake. And all this is going to be accompanied by Ralph McKee's Blues Band, and Lucy Ann Lance is going to be the MC.

Deb Polich: Oh, sounds like a great, great time! And everybody's invited, right?

Jeff Crockett: Absolutely! And Liberty is going to be closed off. So, we're going to have a lot of space. There are going to be tables and chairs, a picnic-like atmosphere. Local businesses will be providing, at a cost, quick, carryout foods. It'll be fantastic.

Deb Polich: Right. And I think that, and actually being involved slightly with the planning of this myself, that idea of the community picnic, everybody coming together to break bread together, bring people are encouraged to bring their own picnic baskets and blankets and/or whatever to use both the commons lot, which is next door to the library, but also Liberty Square. So, it should be a great time.

Jeff Crockett: Oh, what's amazing about this community is everyone coming together. And it's interesting that Christina is going to be there speaking.

Deb Polich: Christina. Our filmmaker.

Jeff Crockett: Yes. Our filmmaker. And also announcing that she's going to do a new film based on 1969 Ann Arbor, and she's going to have a test reading that evening. So, very cool!

Deb Polich: Yes. And that's going to happen at CultureVerse, a time yet still to be determined. I happen to know some of the talent that's involved with that and some of us not-so-talented are part of that.

Jeff Crockett: Yeah, right.

Deb Polich: But anyway, it should be fun. There are all sorts of other things that are going on. I want you to talk about your tours.

Jeff Crockett: Oh, the A2 smart tours are incredible, and credit primarily goes to Norm Tyler and Tom Silbert. We're talking about 15 tours--guided tours--that are available for your mobile device, including 177 sites. And a whole group of people that were involved. But what's really wonderful about these, you go to the site, there's a picture with a historical description. Our local historians--Susan Weinberg, Kara Moll, Christine Crockett, Fran Wright, Ilene Tyler--have been involved in developing the content. So, it's not just good for us locals. It's good for alums who haven't been in Ann Arbor for a long time and want to reawaken the experience for new town visitors. So, please go to A2 Smart Tours dot org, and you'll see all the information there.

tour ann arbor

Deb Polich: And these are virtual tours, or can you also walk them or likewise? Are there maps?

Jeff Crockett: Oh, well, you have a choice. You can do this from your home, or you can walk around. Now, there's one really cool one. It's a virtual scavenger hunt where they show pictures of unidentified places. And you go around, and you record what these places are. And as you complete them all, you can go and get special recognition for it. So, you can do it individually or as a group. It's a great outdoor activity.

Deb Polich: What are a couple of the things that are on the tours...I mean, just sites?

Jeff Crockett: Well, I mean, there are pictures. Are you talking about the main tours?

Deb Polich: Yeah, just so people get an idea--our listeners get an idea--of what they might see if they take advantage of these tours.

Jeff Crockett: Well, there's an overview, basically, that takes you about the important site in downtown. There are more specific ones having to do with the old African American neighborhoods. There's a downtown tour. There's a whole bunch of different tours that I think could be better for you. Just a quick look at the link rather than reading off all the different sites. There's the State Street district. So, there are a whole bunch of them.

Deb Polich: And probably good for all ages.

Jeff Crockett: Oh, absolutely!

Deb Polich: That's great!

Jeff Crockett: A great family activity!

Deb Polich: Jeff, you mentioned that you're working with a lot of volunteers. You've put a lot of time into this. What has that process been like working with folks and making this happen? And we just got a minute left for you to answer that question.

Jeff Crockett: It's a real challenge. The challenge is finding time to meet and to do it. And so, I'm constantly on Zoom.

Deb Polich: Right.

Jeff Crockett: Basically, that's the way this works and just trying to find it. And that's the difficult thing. But the pleasure of it is learning so much from all the different people involved who have different sort of backgrounds and interests. And we have developed sort of friendships. So, it's been a real fun kind of thing, and I feel enriched.

tour ann arbor

Deb Polich: Well, community involvement at its best. And thank you for leading this and being part of it and making sure it gets done. And we can't wait to celebrate on May 25th downtown in Ann Arbor. Thanks for being on the show!

Jeff Crockett: You're most welcome!

Deb Polich: That's Jeff Crockett, who is one of those leading the Ann Arbor Bicentennial birthday party on May 25th. Find out more about Jeff and get all the details about the party at wemu.org. You've been listening to creative:impact. I'm Deb Polich, president and CEO of Creative Washtenaw and your host. Mat Hopson is our producer.
