Tourism is rapidly growing in Qatar and is one of several economic sectors that the country is focusing on to enhance economic diversification over the coming decade. Qatar enjoys a strategic location at the crossroads of East and West, on average only 6-7 hours away from many of the world’s major population centers and travel hubs.  It’s five-star airline, Qatar Airways, connects over 160 destinations worldwide to Doha; and upon arrival, visitors enjoy unsurpassed safety, comfort and hospitality.

Qatar's tourism strategy aims at positioning the country as one of the most desirable destinations worldwide for both leisure and business. Qatar’s tourism offerings –from arts and culture, to adventure and sport, to sand and sea – are distinct, providing traditional experiences with a unique modern twist.

Qatar Tourism is the main government body for planning and regulating the tourism sector. Its mission is to firmly establish Qatar on the global map as a place where cultural authenticity meets modernity, and where people of the world come together to experience unique offerings in culture, sports, business and family entertainment.

Qatar, represented by Qatar Tourism, on Monday presided over the 8th meeting of GCC Ministers of Tourism, a pivotal gathering aimed at fostering collaboration and advancing tourism initiatives within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.

Following preparatory discussions led by undersecretaries for tourism on February 18, the ministerial meeting convened to assess the progress of joint tourism efforts and strategise ways to propel the sector forward.

Tourism ministers from across the GCC region attended the meeting to review the implementation of agreed-upon initiatives, notably the GCC Tourism Strategy 2030.

Endorsed during the 43rd session of the Supreme Council of the GCC, this comprehensive roadmap sets forth ambitious objectives to enhance tourism cooperation and elevate the region’s status as a global tourism destination.

In his opening address, President of Qatar Tourism Saad Al Kharji reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to fostering regional tourism integration and underscored the significance of collective efforts in advancing the tourism sector.

Emphasising Qatar’s role as a catalyst for tourism growth, Kharji highlighted the successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and Qatar’s ongoing efforts to attract visitors and enhance the tourism landscape. He added that with last year’s tourist figures surpassing the four million mark, Qatar has witnessed a remarkable surge in tourism, underscoring the effectiveness of its strategic initiatives and investments in the sector.

Reflecting on Qatar’s contributions to tourism development, he reiterated the country’s dedication to leading efforts in shaping the region’s tourism landscape.

Kharji expressed Qatar’s pride in hosting the 8th Tourism Ministerial Meeting, reaffirming the country’s commitment to fostering collaboration and driving tourism growth across the GCC.

Underlining Qatar’s comprehensive approach to tourism development, he highlighted the country’s investments in infrastructure, cultural initiatives and sustainable tourism practices as Qatar continues to diversify its tourism offerings, positioning itself as a premier destination for leisure, business and cultural experiences.

Jassim Al Budaiwi, secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council, outlined the remarkable strides made by GCC nations in the tourism sector as a significant economic contributor.

Budaiwi extended gratitude to the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and current GCC chair for support to Gulf cooperation, particularly in tourism.

Budaiwi expressed the ministers’ congratulations to Bahrain for designating Manama as the Gulf Tourism Capital for 2024.

He underscored their role in showcasing the GCC’s tourism diversity to global visitors, facilitating tourism integration and implementing the unified tourist visa project, endorsed recently by GCC leaders to ease travel within the region.

Discussions among the ministers covered various topics, including the Gulf Tourism Strategy, collaborative efforts between tourism and culture sectors, and initiatives aimed at advancing joint tourism endeavours within the GCC countries.

In their speeches, the GCC ministers of tourism reiterated their commitment to enhancing GCC tourism cooperation, emphasising its pivotal role in fostering stronger regional relations and contributing significantly to the growth and prosperity of member states.

TESTIMONIALS

tourism ministry qatar

It's our first time participating in this exhibition. Visit Malta is thrilled to have connected with quality buyers, travel agents, and media influencers. The event provided an excellent platform to showcase Malta's appeal, resulting in highly productive days that effectively promoted our destination in Qatar.

tourism ministry qatar

In our second participation, we're delighted to return after our initial foray into this market. Having gained familiarity with the Qatari market, we're keen on continuing our promotion of the Dominican Republic Destination. Thanks to the organizers for their meticulous planning. The current days have been productive, marked by professionalism, and we look forward to a similarly successful third Edition as we work towards achieving our goals.

tourism ministry qatar

This marks the second participation of Mowasalat, and we're proud to serve as the transport partner this year. It has been a resounding success with significant footfall and valuable interactions with numerous companies and potential customers. We eagerly anticipate our presence here next year and in the years to come.

tourism ministry qatar

As our first time participating at QTM, we've been impressed by the spectacular organization. As we were seeking a Destination Management Company (DMC) to provide information about our destination in the Middle East, we found what we were looking for. Our focus is on Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. While our primary partners are based in Europe, participating in events in this region, including Qatar, has revealed significant demand for our country. This positive response encourages our commitment, and we look forward to participating in the event again next year.

tourism ministry qatar

This is our first time at QTM. My primary objective was to engage with GCC travel agents, particularly in Doha, Qatar. Additionally, I aimed to reconnect with existing clients. Unlike larger travel shows, one-on-one meetings were challenging due to higher traffic, but I appreciated the quality of buyers at QTM this year. My ultimate goal is to achieve a positive return on investment (ROI), and if accomplished in a timely manner, I am committed to returning to QTM next year.

tourism ministry qatar

QTM serves as an excellent platform for reconnecting and engaging with potential buyers. The organizing company has executed a commendable job in orchestrating this second edition. Looking ahead, I anticipate the third edition to be even better and more expansive in meeting its targets.

tourism ministry qatar

The Development Support Fund of the Kyrgyz Republic is participating for the first time in QTM, and we are pleased with the well-organized event. Everything has been prepared meticulously, and we are content with our experience. Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans to return for the next year, building on the success of our current participation. Regarding our targets, we have successfully achieved approximately 30 B2B business meetings. This has been a fruitful engagement for us

tourism ministry qatar

It was our first time visiting Doha, Qatar. RM International, serving as the exclusive Greece and Cyprus agent for QTM exhibition. We extend our gratitude to NeXTfairs for the outstanding organization, which has brought great value to our customers. The experience has been so positive that we are committed to returning next year with a larger stand, representing the real estate sector of our countries. Thank you very much for this opportunity.

tourism ministry qatar

Having participated in the first edition, I've observed significant improvements in the current QTM exhibition. The organizing committee has demonstrated increased efficiency and effectiveness. I am optimistic about achieving my targets. Despite the busy days, I managed to secure a handful of leads. The exhibition has proven to be quite fruitful, and as a Qatar-based company, I am committed to supporting travel events in Qatar. Therefore, I will certainly be participating again next year.

tourism ministry qatar

Our participation in this event has exceeded expectations, thanks to Saudi Tourism's support in enabling numerous Saudi companies, including ours, to join. The strategic decision allowing Gulf residents direct entry into Saudi Arabia opens up a significant market. With direct flights from Doha to various Saudi cities, our focus on essential services aligns well. We anticipate even greater participation next year and express gratitude to Qatari authorities for their support.

tourism ministry qatar

Katara Hospitality, the founding partner of the exhibition, has made this our second year participating. The exhibition has successfully helped us achieve our objectives – securing new contracts and forging new partnerships with companies we hadn't engaged with before. We have also witnessed the participation of many companies and countries from outside Doha, which is a testament to the success of the exhibition and based on this, we look forward to participating in future editions."

tourism ministry qatar

"This year's participation was highly beneficial for us as the number of visitors increased, and there were more participants compared to the previous edition. It was a fruitful experience as it allowed us to showcase our facilities, and services, and connect with partners in the tourism and travel industry. We are strategizing to develop the tourism sector in Qatar in alignment with the country's vision for 2030. As for future participation, we plan to be involved because, ultimately, it is an exhibition that honours Qatar, and we, as participants, take pride in contributing to showcasing the latest updates in the hospitality, tourism, and travel sectors.

tourism ministry qatar

We are honoured to be present in Qatar. The event organization is exceptionally well-organized. What impressed me the most was the professionalism of the hosted buyers, coming from diverse markets, and providing excellent networking opportunities beyond the Qatari market. The sessions alongside the conference were a standout feature. Honestly, we look forward to participating more. This year, we represent a hotel group from Egypt, and next year, we hope to have an even larger representation from Egypt.

tourism ministry qatar

This is our second participation in the exhibition, and what stands out is the continuous improvement from year to year, especially in terms of the increasing number and quality of visitors. The presence of high-quality buyers has become more prominent, with a focus on specific sectors such as hotels and tourism companies. It's notable that private companies are participating, promoting the exhibition even outside Qatar, and conducting their promotional campaigns. We've also observed increased participation from other countries, indicating a growing interest in supporting tourism in Qatar.

Excerpt here. allow the user to have fully control on excerpt.

tourism ministry qatar

Grab Thailand hosted “GrabNEXT 2024: Driving Towards the Future of Tourism,” an annual thought-leadership forum exploring how technology and digital platforms can shape Thailand’s tourism landscape. The forum highlighted the concept of “T.R.A.V.E.L.,” which encompasses six key areas designed to impress today’s tourists and stimulate long-term economic growth. Presided over by Tourism and Sports Minister Sermsak Pongpanit, the event also featured a panel discussion titled “Journey Transformation: Accelerating Thai Tourism to New Heights.” Experts from the tourism industry, both public and private sectors, discussed the future of Thai tourism. Panelists included Nithee Seeprae, the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications; Dr. Pipat Luengnaruemitchai, Managing Director and Chief Economist of Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group; and Plernpis Kosolutasarn, Director of Event Marketing and Tourism Associate of Bangkok Airways Public Company Limited.

Sermsak Pongpanit, Minister of Tourism and Sports, said, “Elevating Thailand to a global destination is a top priority for our ministry. Our vision extends beyond being a regional tourism hub, aligning with the government’s policy to position Thailand as an aviation hub catering to over 150 million travelers annually by 2030. Achieving these ambitious goals requires collaboration across various sectors. We appreciate Grab Thailand for organizing this forum and for their ongoing commitment to promoting Thai tourism and providing on-demand transportation services for travelers throughout the country. We look forward to partnering with more organizations to advance Thai tourism and drive the Thai economy forward.”

Worachat Luxkanalode, Country Head of Grab Thailand, stated, “Tourism promotion has been a crucial part of the government’s strategic initiatives to boost the nation’s economy under the IGNITE THAILAND vision, with one of its eight key pillars focusing on revitalizing tourism and making Thailand a global tourism hub. To support this agenda, Grab Thailand organized GrabNEXT under the theme ‘Driving Towards the Future of Tourism,’ providing a forum for discussing and advancing Thai tourism. In addition to showcasing Grab’s technological expertise and our extensive ecosystem across Southeast Asia, which enhances the seamless travel experience for tourists, we emphasized the T.R.A.V.E.L. concept. We believe this approach will attract more international visitors to Thailand, stimulate economic growth at both local and national levels, and drive the Thai tourism industry towards a more sustainable future.”

The T.R.A.V.E.L. concept, designed to elevate the tourism experience in response to today’s tourists’ behaviors, features six core elements, namely:

  • Technological Integration to Enhance Convenience for Tourists: Free Independent Travelers (F.I.T.) currently represent the largest segment of international tourists in Thailand. Recognizing their needs, Grab continually innovates and improves its platform to enhance their travel experience, from trip planning to in-country travel. This includes a pre-arrival welcome screen where travelers can explore local attractions and plan their itinerary before flying to Thailand. The app offers multiple languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. It also links with partner platforms like WeChat, Booking.com, and Trip.com to ensure seamless access to Grab’s ride-hailing services. Additionally, Grab expands digital payment options to foreign tourists by integrating with Alipay and Kakao Pay.
  • Reliability & Safety to Boost Tourist Confidence: Safety is a crucial factor for tourists when selecting accommodation or transportation. Grab provides peace of mind by investing in and enhancing its safety standards across three key areas, namely Safety Technology, such as the Safety Center feature, which allows users to request help in emergencies, and the recently launched Audio Protect, which enables audio recordings during rides; Safety Measures , covering stringent screening and training for driver-partners, established service standards that emphasize safety, and accident insurance coverage for both passengers and driver-partners; and Safety Campaigns, like the Safe Ride Safe Road campaign, in which Grab partnered with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to promote road safety during the Songkran Festival.
  • Accessibility to Major and Secondary Cities: The growing trend of foreign tourists exploring Thailand’s secondary cities, reflected in a 38% surge in tourism revenue last year, presents a new opportunity. To cater to this trend and provide seamless experiences across all regions, Grab has expanded its services to cover 71 provinces in Thailand, including both major and secondary cities. Additionally, Grab has partnered with the Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited to set up passenger pickup and drop-off points for travelers at major airports, including those in Phuket, Chiang Mai, Don Mueang, and Suvarnabhumi.
  • Valuable Experiences through the Charm of Thai Hospitality: Thailand’s renowned service excellence, known for its unique charm, is a significant reason why international visitors keep coming back. Acknowledging this, Grab empowers its driver-partners to be exemplary hosts and consistently provide exceptional service through online training via the GrabAcademy programme. These trainings focus on enhancing service standards, basic communication skills in foreign languages, and safe driving practices. Furthermore, Grab enhances the travel experience with GrabCar Premium, increasingly favored by foreigners for its exclusive comfort in every ride.
  • Environmentally Friendly Travel: Today’s tourists prioritize sustainability, with over 90% expressing this preference according to a survey. In alignment with the demand for high-quality and sustainable tourism, Grab has introduced environmentally-friendly options for its users. This includes the Grab EV programme, which encourages driver-partners to transition to electric vehicles while providing passengers with a greener ride choice. Additionally, Grab’s Carbon Offset feature enables users to contribute directly to environmental initiatives by donating two baht per ride or one baht per food delivery to support tree planting initiatives with Grab. The collective donations in 2023 will aid in the planting of over 150,000 trees.
  • Local Touch for Tourists to Indulge in Local Experience: Translating Thai identity into soft power to attract tourists is part of a national strategy. According to a survey, 65% of tourists seek to experience local heritage and cultures, including festivals, local cuisine, and community products. As a platform that connects consumers with small business entrepreneurs and driver-partners, Grab aims to provide tourists with access to authentic Thai experiences through its platform. Highlighted initiatives include the launch of Grab & Go guidebooks in partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand to promote must-visit destinations, showcasing the culinary delights of local merchants through its GrabFood service, and providing easy access to locally produced goods via GrabMart. These efforts make it simpler for visitors to uncover Thailand’s hidden treasures.

At this event, Grab also organized a panel discussion on the topic “ Journey Transformation: Accelerating Thai Tourism to New Heights ,” featuring experts in the tourism industry. The panel included Mr. Nithee Seeprae , the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Deputy Governor for marketing communications, Dr. Pipat Luengnaruemitchai , Managing Director and Chief Economist of Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group, Ms. Plernpis Kosolutasarn , Director of Event Marketing and Tourism Associate of Bangkok Airways Public Company Limited, and Ms. Maythinee Anavachkul, Director of Mobility and Operations at Grab Thailand. They shared their views and explored ways to advance Thai tourism to captivate new-generation tourists. The discussion covered four main topics: the direction and future of Thai tourism, the formulation of a safe tourism strategy, the promotion of local experiences as part of Thailand’s Soft Power, and sustainable tourism that creates a balanced approach for social, economic, and environmental factors.
