Top Countryside and Village Sightseeing in France

  • The pretty village of Giverny in Normandy  sits amongst attractive rolling hills dotted with fine old buildings and forested slopes. The highlight is Claude Monet’s garden, where the artist lived and worked for 50 years and painted his famous waterlilies series.
  • Easily accessible from Marseille , Calanques National Park protects a series of beautiful fjord-like sea inlets, rock formations, and natural caves which can be explored both by road and by boat.
  • Celebrated for its wines, the Burgundy region of central France is awash with row upon row of vines heavy with grapes, watched over by elegant chateaus with rounded towers and quintessentially French roof shapes that act as the perfect backdrop to a relaxed stroll or picnic.
  • The French Alps such as  Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and  Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur have their own unique style to its villages, which are perhaps best explored by taking on the likes of the 21 hairpin turns of the Alpe d'Huez, the renowned climb for cyclists but equally attractive on four wheels.

My wife and I recently engaged Emilie, of France Just For You, to plan a two week trip to Provence in the first two weeks of May. It was mid-March and we found Emilie during a web search of self-driving tours of France. What a find! Emilie responded within twenty-four hours with very specific questions, wanting to know more about us, our interests and preferences for things like accommodation, rental vehicle, activities, etc. and our budget. From there she took over, developed an outline of a suggested trip and after we agreed that we liked it, she developed it into a complete, and we mean complete, tour package. She booked Five Star B&B’s which lived up to their reputation; all hosts were fluent in English. She arranged an excellent rental car complete with an English GPS, first class tickets on the TGV from Avignon to Charles de Gaulle airport and overnight accommodation at CDG. Two weeks before our departure, Emilie couriered a package that included a 300 page book that contained a detailed daily itinerary of sight-seeing self-drive tours she recommended we do. This book included maps and GPS co-ordinates of every B&B, all points of interest, parking lot locations (most helpful!) and many recommended restaurants. It also contained a lot of very useful information for North Americans visiting France including material on food, wine, culture, driving and language. Emilie knows France and will guide you to the places most tourists never get to see. Her thoroughness and attention to detail are impressive. She provided prompt responses to all our communication and was even available 24/7 while we were in France in case any problems arose. All our accommodations were top-notch. Emilie has extremely high standards and therefore, we have no hesitation recommending France Just For You.

We could not be happier. When we first received the guide book and brochures, we thought we would not need them, but they were invaluable! Our first stay with Florence and Phil was especially memorable but really we cannot think of a highlight because it was all wonderful. We will certainly recommend your company to anyone we know travelling to …

The 11 Most Beautiful Villages in the French Countryside

For more than a decade, these french villages have received television-level fame for their beauty..

  • Copy Link copied

White, fairytale-like buildings against a bright blue sky and lush green land

Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, a stop on the Camino de Santiago, is one of France’s most beautiful villages.

The French love a good contest. From Paris’s annual baguette competition to the cow beauty pageant at the Salon de l’Agriculture, there’s no stopping the matchups. Even villages in the countryside of France are judged in Le village préféré des Français , an annual TV show hosted by journalist Stéphane Bern (aka Monsieur Patrimoine).

Of 14 candidates each representing a French region, the French public vote for their favorite. And in a country known for its cinematic, pinch-me-pretty villages, that’s no easy feat. The result for the lucky winner is an undeniable boon for tourism—though sometimes to ill effect . (Tip: Avoid the crowds by visiting in the off-season instead of summer or the May holiday weekends.)

Here’s a look at the heart-stealing champs over the past 11 years.

1. Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

  • Location: Occitanie; 30 minutes from Cahors
  • 2012 winner

From its vertiginous perch on a craggy cliff, this honey-colored hamlet is reflected in the waters of the Lot River below. A tangle of medieval alleyways tumbles down the hillside, dominated by the 16th-century Gothic church. Much of the village has remained unchanged since the Middle Ages, and today harbors 13 classified historic monuments, including the 14th-century Maison Bordes and an old hospital dating to the 13th. It’s attracted artists and writers since the early 20th century, including surrealist poet André Breton, who summered among the hollyhocks.

2. Eguisheim

  • Location: Alsace; 15 minutes from Colmar
  • 2013 winner

Traditional roots run as deep as the vineyards in this village that’s straight out of a storybook. With half-timbered houses festooned with geraniums, Eguisheim is situated on Alsace’s fabled Route des Vins (Wine Route), celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Local winemakers have been working the land for generations: Domaine Paul Schneider is an independent, family-owned winery housed in a 17th-century tithe barn, while Domaine Emile Beyer has transmitted its viticultural savoir faire since 1580 (that’s 14 generations).

Cordes-sur-Ciel, a village near Albi in Tarn, Midi-Pyrenees, Southern France, as seen from the southern viewpoint.

3. Cordes-sur-Ciel

  • Location: Occitanie; 75 minutes from Toulouse
  • 2014 winner

Photogenic is an understatement here. Rising high above the sun-baked Occitan valleys, this 13th-century hilltop village noses the clouds. Hence the phrase “ sur ciel” (“in heaven”) added to the official name in 1993. From the fortified gate, steep cobblestone lanes wind uphill to a postcard panorama. Artists and writers gravitate here (Albert Camus was a fan), and you’ll find a number of artisans’ boutiques among the Gothic houses made of ochre sandstone.

4. Ploumanac’h

  • Location: Brittany; two hours from Rennes
  • 2015 winner

Generations of vacationers have heard the siren song of Brittany’s Pink Granite Coast. Swept by dramatic tides, the shore is strewn with spectacular boulders and rock formations among sandy beaches. In the heart of this idyllic setting sits the village port of Ploumanac’h. Landmarks include the lighthouse, historic tide-operated mill, and the myth-shrouded island oratory dedicated to Saint-Guirec, an evangelizing Welsh monk (later declared a saint); he arrived on this beach in the 7th century. From here, boat excursions depart for the Sept-Îles, an archipelago that’s an important sanctuary for migrating birds, including puffins and northern gannets. Spring and summer are best for bird-watching.

Rochefort-en-Terre medieval village, Morbihan department in the Brittany region, France

Like many of the villages listed, Rochefort-en-Terre dates back hundreds of years.

5. Rochefort-en-Terre

  • Location: Brittany; 80 minutes from Rennes
  • 2016 winner

At a distance of about 20 miles from the ocean, this village of 700 inhabitants offers another side of Brittany. The village dates to the 12th century, but a new tradition was born in the early 20th century, when American artist Alfred Klots fell under Rochefort’s spell and settled here, restoring a ruined castle as his home. In 1907, he launched an annual window box competition, and Rochefort blossomed into a city of geraniums, the granite facades of the Renaissance houses decorated in riotous color. A highlight on the cultural calendar is the annual Christmas illuminations, which draw visitors from all over France.

6. Kaysersberg

  • Location: Alsace, 1 hour from Strasbourg
  • 2017 winner

Stork nests, vine-clad hillsides, colorful half-timbered houses next to the River Weiss: It’s the quintessential portrait of Alsace here in Kaysersberg, also situated on the Route des Vins. Lorded over by the ruins of a strategic 13th-century castle, Kaysersberg is home to the destination hotel-restaurant Le Chambard, where beloved TV host Anthony Bourdain died. Here chef Olivier Nasti operates a Michelin two-starred establishment alongside a casual winstub , or traditional brasserie.

Moulin de Cassel, a windmill in Cassel, is one of the village’s biggest landmarks.

  • Location: Hauts-de-France; 1 hour from Lille
  • 2018 winner

With its origins going back to the Iron Age, this fortified hilltop village has borne the brunt of a millennium-old geopolitical tug of war. At the crossroads of Roman roads in ancient Gaul, Cassel was sacked by the Vikings in 880, and later became a 17th-century war prize fought over by France and Spain. Today, Cassel offers an immersion in Flemish culture not far from the Belgian border. Brick gabled houses line the Grand’Place, estaminets dish up traditional cuisine like carbonnade flamande (a beef stew made with beer), and the carnival brings wondrous street parades of “giants” made of papier-mâché, wood, and fabric.

Often likened to Ireland, the wild Cotentin Peninsula is marked by wind-swept moors tumbling over rocky cliffs into the English Channel. It’s here where this coastal fishing village welcomes sailors to its yacht marina, one of the largest in Normandy. The village of 2,000 people is also known for its oyster production and 17th-century towers that are part of the UNESCO-listed fortifications of Vauban, Louis XIV’s military engineer. You can reach Tatihou Island just offshore on foot at low tide across the oyster beds.

  • 2020 winner

The fairy-tale region of Alsace clinched a third “favorite village” title when Hunspach won at the height of the COVID pandemic. Close to both the German border and the forested Vosges regional natural park, Hunspach exudes authenticity, its central area classified a historic monument by the French government. Since the Middle Ages, the colors of the shutters on the half-timbered houses indicate an artisan’s dwelling. 10. Sancerre

  • Location: Centre-Val de Loire; 90 minutes from Orléans
  • 2021 winner

For many, Sancerre is synonymous with the crisp white wine from the Loire Valley. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Loire River, the medieval town that gave the vin its name overlooks vineyards as far as the eye can see. (The view from the top of the Tour des Fiefs is magnificent.) Don’t miss the 15th-century Maison Jacques Cœur, the village’s oldest house, which once belonged to King Charles VII’s royal advisor.

The flower-filled window boxes and pastel-hued houses may evoke a charming fantasy, but the history of Bergheim is anything but. Between 1582 and 1630, 40 women were accused of witchcraft and burnt at the stake—the Maison des Sorcières (Witches’ House) tells a story of the victims and their trials. Today this Alsatian village is like a movie set, ringed by medieval walls. You can walk the perimeter along a one-hour walking trail called the “Circuit des remparts,” which connects the nine towers of Bergheim. Vineyards in the French countryside town of Riquewihr

The French countryside is the perfect respite for anyone wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. While the City of Love may offer quintessential tourist attractions like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, nothing beats the view of rolling hills, lavender fields, and vineyards. Its breathtaking landscape also has served as an inspiration for many artists, poets, and writers, captivated by its beauty and simplicity. Certainly, the countryside is one of the country’s many charms.

Offering miles and miles of rustic and charming sights, here’s a list of the must-visit places if you want to explore the French countryside.

1. Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

View of Saint Cirque Lapopie perched on a limestone cliff

Photo by Eric Huybrechts on Flickr

Saint-Cirq-Lapopie sits on the edge of rugged limestone cliffs that overlook the Lot Valley and the Lot River. This medieval village was voted by locals as one of the most beautiful villages in France, with artists like André Breton settling in the village.

At Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, feel as if you’ve traveled back in time as you navigate through its narrow streets surrounded by half-timbered houses. Cruise along the Lot River and discover fascinating cave dwellings and paths that date back to the 14th century. Back on the land, head to the castle ruins for a panoramic view of the town then visit the Rignault Museum.

2. Honfleur

Top 10 Places in the French Countryside

The French countryside is full of cute towns, villages, vineyards and beautiful landscapes to explore. After visiting France more times than I can count, I’ve put together my list of favourite places in the French countryside not to be missed to help you plan your own visit to the glorious French countryside. Post updated June 2022.

Where to travel in French Countryside | World of Wanderlust

1. Viviers, France

Viviers is a small commune in the south of France that is not very talked about, much less visited. There are some fabulous small towns in the south of France that experience hardly any tourist visitors. This makes them incredibly unique and makes it possible to feel like a local. Although the Chocolat film was shot in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain , for me Viviers is the closest I have felt to a similar experience.

A Guide to Beaune France | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

2. Beaune, France

I have had the pleasure of visiting Beaune twice now and I love it so much I’d jump at the opportunity to return a third time. There’s just something so magical about this city that is only a little over two hours by train from Paris. Beaune is also the centre of Burgundy, the capital of wine-making in France. Thus if you’re a wine drinker like me, you absolutely must visit Beaune!

Annecy France World of Wanderlust

3. Annecy, France

Annecy is one of those picture perfect postcard towns you have to pinch yourself to know that it is real. This alpine town is located on Lake Annecy and the glacial waters flow through the town that is built on canals. Picture yourself walking along cobblestone alley ways, getting lost in the smells of freshly baked croissants and French language as the shopkeepers converse across the streets.

4. Colmar, France

I had long dreamed of visiting Colmar before I finally visited in Spring a couple of years ago. If there’s just one town in the French countryside that you have to visit, this would be it. Colmar is located in the northeast of France with extreme proximity to the German border. This has resulted in a unique blend of Franco-German architecture in playful colours which really pop during Spring/Summer with the fresh blooms. Another great town nearby is Eguisheim, reachable by bicycle through the vineyards.

5. Loire Valley

The Loire Valley is as dreamy as you would imagine. This is the perfect day trip from Paris but if you have the time, it is even better to spend a few days in the Loire Valley. Here you can explore a range of old chateaus that have been beautifully restored as well as castles of grand proportions.

6. Gordes, France

Located in Provence, the picture perfect town of Gordes sits on a hill overlooking the French countryside below. This is a great day trip from Avignon nearby or you could rent a home from one of the locals to feel oh-so-Frenchy in no time.

Arles France | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

7. Arles, France

Located on the Rhône River in the Provence region of France, Arles doesn’t get talked about nearly as much as it should. This gorgeous town in the French countryside is the perfect stop as part of a larger south of France tour.

8. Château de Cormatin , Burgundy

I had never heard of Chateau de Cormatin until I was standing in the grounds marvelling at the manicured gardens. As far as chateau restorations go, this is one of the best I have seen by a private owner. The family-run chateau now exists solely as a tourist destination and is a great glimpse in to the lives of aristocrats who once used these homes as seasonal vacation homes from Paris.

9. Bayeux, France

Located in Normandy on the Aure river, Bayeux is a small commune in France. This picture perfect countryside escape is best enjoyed in the Spring Summer months when the flowers bloom and the lush greenery takes over the town.

Guide to the South of France | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

10. Eze, France

Eze is just a short drive from Nice in the South of France but its’ unique location makes it feel a world away. Located on the edge of a cliff, Eze overlooks the ocean and has stunning panoramic views. It has the feel of a small French countryside village but the appeal of being located near to Nice and Cannes.

Over to you! Where will you visit in France this summer!?

What people love about france tours from paris.

It was a really good experience. This is my second trip with Eskapas. The first one was a small group tour fully escorted in Italy and it was wonderful. This trip is independent and you are joining at the meeting point to daily group ours. If you have send of orientation, it may be difficult so I recommend yo to take a taxi to reach out to the meeting points. Usually it costs 15-20Euro. The company upgraded our hotel to New Hotel Le Voltaire 4* ,, located in 11th Arrondissement, close to Bastille. It is a correct one, decent breakfast. Don't miss Cimetiere du Pere-Lachaise which is close proximity.
Wonderful tour. Top notch accommodations; very comfortable tour bus; courteous, friendly, and knowledgeable tour guide and driver. Restaurant selections were fine and we had sufficient time to explore on our own. Highly recommended.

The French Countryside: A Discovery Guide

Full Width Featured Image With Sidebar

Last Updated:  8 February 2022

Do you wonder what lies beyond Paris? Industrial estates? High-rise blocks? Commercial zones? The least that I say about the people of France is that they are quite lucky. The French countryside offers an amazing playground for holidaymakers and city dwellers in search of serenity. In this article, I invite you to an armchair discovery of the stunning countryside of France. Together we’ll travel across the country, from the Paris region to Lorraine, the Dordogne and Provence.

What does the French countryside look like?

As a French native who had lived in the French countryside, I have a clear understanding of what really is rural France .

This did not stop me from doing a bit of research on the topic.

And to be frank with you, I was quite bemused to read from a few bloggers (mostly American, no offence!) on the subject.

I did read some interesting posts… many mentioned Colmar , Annecy , and Chamonix as top French countryside destinations.

If Monsieur Tout-le-Monde (any ordinary Frenchman) was reading them, he would surely gasp a “ HEIN?! ” as his eyes would widen and eyebrows lift.

The fact is that they are middle-sized towns that are not associated with “ la campagne “.

And cerise sur le gateau (icing on the cake!), some only depict the countryside of France through rose-coloured glasses… how many of us have seen these beautifully staged photos of girls in pretty dresses walking in a field of blooming lavender?

Although living in the French countryside could well be a great experience, it can also come with challenges (think about the funny Provençal stories of Peter Mayle !). It’s just about finding a balanced way when describing life in rural France.

And yes, we’re allowed to dream a little!

What is French countryside?

In fact, it might well be that the perception of Anglo-Saxon bloggers on the French countryside is really different from that of the French.

It is quite possible that the root of the problem is semantic!

I’m pretty sure they wanted to talk about what is there beyond Paris . And so, how do we call it?

The countryside of France?

Well, not exactly.

For you’ll find some very large cities there: Lyon, Marseille, Lille, Bordeaux, Toulouse… and it might cause offence to their inhabitants if you come and say that they’re people living in rural France.

In fact, these bloggers couldn’t find the word they wanted to describe it.

We do have a special word in the French language:

La Province!

(not to be confused with Provence…)

La campagne française

In French, the countryside is la campagne . It is used in opposition to:

  • la ville (the city or the town),
  • la mer (the seaside),
  • and la montagne (the mountain).

Therefore Chamonix in the Alps or the seaside villages of the French Riviera are not in the countryside as French people understand it.

Think more about rolling hills covered with fields , pastures or forests .

The bell tower of a church indicates the presence of a village half-hidden in the lush green backdrop.

The rural land is dotted with ponds , lakes , canals , and rivers .

Lavender fields.

Sunflower fields.

Poppy fields.

Tall trees line the country roads.

Now I’m sure I’ve made you dream! 🙂

No wonder that for decades holidaymakers have been irresistibly drawn to the peaceful atmosphere that reigns in the fields of France.

How to describe the French countryside?

You see, France has a thousand faces.

No other country of its size offers such a variety of landscapes as in France.

There is a multitude of diverse landscapes, which yet are “France”.

Here old customs and costumes linger to the delight of the curious explorer!

The plain of Beauce

South-west of Paris lies the great plain of Beauce . Parisians have given it the nickname of “ Grenier de la France ” (France’s granary). In summer a sea of golden wheat extends beyond the horizon, dominated by the towers of Chartres cathedral .

The countryside of Western France

The bocage is a common landscape feature in the west of France. The French words refer to the chessboard pattern of little fields separated by thick hedgerows, as opposed to “ champs ouverts ” (literally open fields).

Cattle are reared in the lush meadows, corn is grown in the fields and fruits ripen in well-ordered orchards.

The countryside of Périgord

In south-west France the historic province of Périgord includes four distinctive areas:

  • Green Périgord (colour of the lush pastures and woods)
  • White Périgord (colour of the limestone outcrops)
  • Purple Périgord  (colour of the vine grapes that grow there)
  • Black Périgord (colour of the dense oak forests)

Known to the English as “ the Dordogne “, this is the land where you can find the most medieval castles in France along with Alsace. You’ll see many fortresses still towering over the land it surveys for miles around, particularly in Black Périgord.

The Provençal countryside

Provence belongs to a completely different world. One of brilliant sunshine , of scrubland and bare rock patches.

This is the land of corn and of wine, of fruit and olive trees… and of course, of lavender fields!

Our favourite thing in Provence is a sunset in the Luberon region. T he Provençal countryside seems peaceful and serene, inspiring a feeling of awe.

The Burgundian countryside

Burgundy offers an infinite variety of landscapes: vineyard-covered hillsides, charming valleys, green pastures, and dense forests.

The countryside of Burgundy is crisscrossed by numerous waterways by the sides of which cycle paths have been created to enable cyclists to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The countryside of Lorraine

Lorraine is a land of “ côtes “. Deep forests cover the sharp limestone ridges. The clay vales are used both for cultivation and for pasture.

Our favourite countryside drives in Lorraine are in the Toulois (region of Toul), the Saintois (Hill of Sion) and the eastern part of the Lorraine Natural Park .

The Plain of Alsace

The plain of Alsace is like one great meadow. Along the Rhine stretches the Grand Ried (forest and even marshland on the river’s gravel beds).

However, the plain is a very rich farming area. Cereals and hops alternate with orchards. At the foot of the Vosges are great vine-growing lands, characterised by charming flower-filled villages: Eguisheim , Kaysersberg , Riquewihr , Mittelbergheim…

A song evoking the countryside of France

You’ve probably heard the song before.

Its title is “ I Wish You Love “.

It was sung by famous singers such as Chet Baker, Shirley Bassey, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Michael Bublé and many more.

Did you know that French artists Léo Chauliac and Charles Trenet composed the song in French in 1942 under the name: Que reste-t-il de nos amours ?

The original version of the song tells about a nostalgic image of the French countryside (a local feature that Americans translators deliberately omitted!)

Que reste-t-il de nos amours Que reste-t-il de ces beaux jours Une photo, vieille photo De ma jeunesse […] Un petit village, un vieux clocher Un paysage si bien caché Et dans un nuage le cher visage De mon passé

The literal translation of the song

What is left of our love? What is left of these beautiful days? A photo, an old photo Of my youth […] A small village, an old bell tower A countryside so well hidden And in a cloud the dear face Of my past

Other examples of French songs celebrating the countryside are:

  • Douce France by Charles Trenet (1943),
  • Le Loir-et-Cher by Michel Delpech ,
  • and more recently A Nos Souvenirs by Corrèze-based Trois Cafés Gourmands .

These songs – among others – often depict an idyllic vision of living in the French countryside.

The sensory heritage of the French countryside

Have you heard of Maurice?

If you’ve been following me for a little while, you will remember this email I sent you about this crazy fait divers (miscellaneous news item).

Maurice had made the headlines not only in France but all over the world.

It’s about an ordinary rooster in the French countryside who was bothering a retired couple who had bought a holiday home nearby.

They couldn’t bear to be woken in the morning by Maurice’s ‘gracious song’.

Maurice’s owner received a legal notice from the couple claiming the noise was a health risk.

The case was brought to Court.

Maurice won the battle and was free to continue his noisy crowing!

But the story doesn’t stop there.

In fact, the case set a precedent in France.

The protected national heritage of France’s countryside

In January 2021, France passed a law protecting the “sensory heritage” of its rural areas, in the face of complaints about the noises and smells typical of the countryside.

The law protecting the sounds and smells of the French countryside is aimed to defend aspects of rural life against the complaints made by visitors (or new arrivals), dubbed ‘neo-rurals’.

In fact, the countryside of France has seen an increasing number of social conflicts between the rural and the neo-rural. The latter have been complaining about all sorts of issues:

Loud roosters, croaking frogs, cowbells, grasshoppers, pungent horse manure, tractors…

The new legislation aims to better understand the typical “sounds and smells” of the French countryside in order to prevent ‘disagreements between neighbours”.

Maurice is now deceased (he died of respiratory infection in the summer of 2020), but Joël Giraud, the French Minister for Rural Affairs, mentioned the rooster in a tweet celebrating the new law, writing:

“A posthumous victory for Maurice the rooster, a symbol of rural life!”

The owner replaced the famous rooster with Maurice II who will be able to carry out his morning crow with the law behind him! 🐓

The French countryside near Paris

The urban area of Paris covers 23.7% of the Ile de France and is home to 88.6% of the region’s population.

This means that the countryside covers three-quarters of the Ile de France.

In fact, you don’t have to drive far into la France profonde (deep France) to find some greenery. It’s surprising to see how the Paris region is rural despite the 10 million people living in the area.

Here are fields and green pastures, including some of France’s most beautiful forests:

  • Fontainebleau
  • Rambouillet
  • Saint-Germain-en-Laye
  • Rambouillet , and

Actually, you don’t even have to leave Paris to experience the village atmosphere of the French countryside… There are a number of spots that massive urbanisation haven’t (yet) touched. Look for:

  • La Campagne à Paris
  • The Mouzaïa District
  • Passage Boudin
  • Cité Florale

Beautiful French countryside towns

Across France, you’ll find a series of exquisitely preserved countryside towns. Most of them are market towns, with shops supplying the bare necessities of French life:

  • la boulangerie-pâtisserie (bakery),
  • la boucherie-charcuterie (butcher),
  • le salon de coiffure (hairdresser)…
  • la pharmacie (chemist),
  • and often a small supermarket that replaces the traditional épicerie .

Narrow streets are an invitation to lose oneself exploring the old town.

The most beautiful detours of France

In the late 1990s the mayor of Loches founded the association Les Plus Beaux Détours de France . The goal was to include little towns (pop. between 2,000 and 20,000) with a rich heritage that are situated off the busy main roads of France.

Today the association comprises 106 small towns in 71 départements, including Thann (Alsace), Pernes-les-Fontaines (Provence), Toul (Lorraine), Louhans (Bourgogne), Nyons (Drôme provençale), Honfleur (Normandy)…

For more info, check out the official website of Les Plus Beaux Détours de France .

Venture out into the French countryside

From these market towns, there are many reasons for venturing out into the local countryside.

It could be for:

  • walking on top of a hill to admire the view,
  • seeking out specific highlights such as a medieval ruin or an old watermill.
  • exploring deep mysterious forests and lush pastures where cows outnumber humans.
  • cycling along a canal on the traffic-free towpath for miles.
  • taking part in outdoor activities such as canoeing, rock-climbing, paragliding…
  • eating at a restaurant in the heart of the countryside that serves regional specialities on menus.

Beautiful French countryside villages

Just guest how many villages there are in France?

More than 30,000!

Of course, not all of them are worth your visit. Some are just a cluster of houses with no (touristic) interest.

But many will reveal a different aspect once seen from afar, in their rural backdrop.

What is a village in France?

Statistically speaking, a village is a commune with a population of less than 2,000.

The traditional understanding is that it is a cluster of houses organised around l’église (the church and la mairie (the town-hall).

Many villages date back to ancient times and have their own history and individuality.

Some villages have since lost their status.

  • Because they grew too large in population.
  • Or they got included in a town or city.

This is the case of Montmartre in Paris. A village occupied the top of the hill until 1860 when it was included within the limits of Paris. However, we still talk about the ‘ village atmosphere ‘ of Montmartre despite the fact that it is part of one of Europe’s largest cities!

The most beautiful villages of France

Out of the 30,000 villages in France, only a small number are of touristic interest.

An association created in 1982 listed almost 160 villages in the label: Les Plus Beaux Villages de France .

It includes some popular destinations such as Gordes (Provence), La Roque-Gageac (Périgord), Riquewihr (Alsace), Yvoire (Haute-Savoie)…

Other villages which are not part of the association are equally beautiful: Hattonchâtel (Lorraine), Montfort-L’Amaury (Ile de France), Eygalières (Provence)…

And then there are a large number of pretty and unpretentious villages that you’ll discover while driving across France. As for us we stumbled upon:

  • Flassan (Provence),
  • Saint-Romain (Burgundy),
  • Orsans (Franche-Comté),
  • Hirtzbach (Alsace)…

These survivors of urban development and the drift from the land are a timeless glimpse of the rural history of France.

The local markets

Rural France goes hand in hand with the amazing open-air markets.

If you’ve been to France before it was probably one of your holiday’s highlights. Personally, we’ve been fascinated by the markets of Provence, Burgundy and Périgord. The display of local produce is indeed a treat, just look at the photos!

The French Countryside-style dinner table

If you follow France-related photos on Instagram or on other social media, you’d have probably come across some amazing photos of a beautiful staged table set in the countryside.

I’m not sure that each French family living in the countryside follow that particular style… but I guess it is part of a particular image we have about France.

A romantic and atmospheric vision of what French life ought to be…

Even though the reality might be a little different.

But again, we’re allowed to dream!

Anyway, when searching about the countryside of France on the interweb I came up with a beautiful French-inspired dinnerware set you might be interested in…

Particularly if you want to dress the table with a French countryside touch. Look no further than Mikasa.

Mikasa is an American brand name, a leader in tabletop fashion in dinnerware. The name of one of their collections intrigued me. Guess what the name was?

The Mikasa French Countryside Collection®

And I have to say it does look “ French countryside-ish ” to me with the gently scalloped edges and curves and rich cream colour.

Check out the whole collection range here .

The brand also offers the matching set of s tainless steel cutlery with serving utensil:

The best way to explore the French countryside

In fact, if you want to explore the French countryside from the comfort of your sofa, there’s a great way to do so.

Follow the Tour de France bicycle race on TV!

During an epic race, the cyclists cross the whole of France from towns to villages and from countryside hills to mountains passes.

In conclusion

Finally, let’s end with a brief summary:

The countryside in France is NOT:

  • an urban area, even outside Paris (such as Annecy )
  • a seaside village (such as Eze )
  • a mountain resort (such as Chamonix )

The countryside in France IS:

  • a patchwork of rural landscapes made up of forests, meadows, orchards, vineyards and fields that extend beyond the horizon.
  • a hilly or flat landscape, dotted with a myriad of picturesque villages.
  • a land where the unevenly spread population still has a marked rural character.

If the countryside of France inspires you

Do you remember that first time you’ve been to rural France? Leave a comment below with the place where you’ve been, I’d love to hear from you!

And why not save this Pin for later!

Hello Pierre, Belatedly, my delight in the virtual visit of Nancy. I had no idea about what I have missed. I hope that by next year I can have the pleasure of seeing Nancy with my own eyes!

The countryside is known for its superb agriculture and is a good explanation of why French eat well but do not generally get obese. I reside in Bkk and eating is a big pastime here too but my tastebuds are keener on French cuisine than any other cuisine. Visiting the countryside via your introduction is a great pleasure especially during the Pandemic which has spoiled us from visiting France. Greetings and best wishes, Ernest

Thank you Ernest! I’m glad to hear you enjoy the virtual trips to Nancy and the French countryside! Let’s keep dreaming of better days when we’ll be able to travel again! 🙂

Thank you for the continuing delightful reading each week and memories our trip to Normandie (y) based in Hon fleur. A good bit of what we saw was rural and this now currently touring France via the Tour de France. Some this year is quite rural but a at home travel through your beautiful country. Stuck in SW Florida this year.

Hello Kay! Thank you for your comment. Yes you’re so right: following the Tour de France is a great way to discover the French countryside. I’ve just added this idea to the article. Thanks!!

Hi, What is the best way to move around countryside France .. Between towns and in a town

Hi Roji, as public transportation is quite limited in the French countryside, it is better to rely on a car … or a bike! 🙂

Hello Pierre –

My father was in the US Air Force during the Cold War. I grew up in a small town called Cheminot which was then located in the Alsace-Lorraine province. My village was Google mapped in 2010 which allowed me to “walk” down the village streets past our stone house and the church that was under construction before we moved away. I cried but felt comforted when I remembered that, next year, I will build my home on the south side of a mountain with a couple wild, untouched alpine rural acres to beautify. Thank you for these beautiful photos!!

You’re welcome, Joyce! Google street view is indeed a powerful tool that can bring back so many fond memories! I’ve used it a lot to remember the places I’ve been/lived 🙂

Is Crecy French countryside? Do you have any thoughts on the village?

Yes it is. I haven’t focused on that village so the best is to go to the Wikipedia page to get an idea. You can also check out the village on Google Map (streetview).

We have often rented a car and driven through the countryside. The small towns are beautiful – some so small that there are no petrol stations or cheese shops. The search for my ancestry brought me to the tiny village of Chaumeil and the surrounding countryside. Although Paris will always be my favorite place in France, the countryside is also a must see.

Thank you Kathy!

You can make a nice loop and explore the regions west of Paris to see the French countryside beyond its flashy cities.

From Paris, drive to Rouen, a historic medieval town that inspired many Impressionist painters, including Claude Monet. While you’re in Normandy, explore the neighboring Brittany region. Visit the fortified city of Saint-Malo, then head to Mont Saint-Michel, an impressive island commune perched on a rocky peak.

Head next to Loire Valley, making Tours your base ( Hotel Val De Loire is our top pick). Spend the next few days time-traveling to medieval towns and chateaux. Don’t miss the beautiful Chateau de Cheverny and Chateau de Chambord!

From Tours, a scenic drive northeast brings you right back to Paris.

Stay at Yndo Hotel to get the best of Bordeaux. Once you’ve had your fill of this scrumptious city, pack your car and head south.

Break up your drive with a quick stop at Domaine de Laas to enjoy the chateau’s vast gardens and artworks. Have lunch at Navarrenx, crowned France’s most beautiful village in 2014, and take a stroll around the markets. Finally, drive into Barcus and spend a day or two relaxing in the serene Hotel Restaurant Chilo , while you go for hikes and drives to the surrounding mountains.

5. Languedoc and Provence

Nature-lovers and beauty connoisseurs, this road trip’s for you. The neighboring provinces of Languedoc and Provence will have you swooning for dramatic bastides, frolicking in flower fields, and embracing the sunshine and stunning sceneries.

Fly into Avignon and, unless you’re arriving on an evening trip, pick up your rental car and drive to the romantic medieval town of Uzes. Make the lovely L’Albiousse your base for the first half of this road trip as you take your time exploring the gorgeous region of Languedoc.

From Uzes, drive south to visit Nimes, a beautiful well-preserved city with vestiges of the Roman Empire. Explore the Amphitheater , one of the world’s best-conserved artifacts of Roman architecture. Check out the 2,000-year-old Pont du Gard aqueduct, Jardins de la Fontaine, and the Maison Carree. This 2-hour walking tour introduces you to the city’s Roman culture.

Go further south through Arles and Camargue, and all the way to Aigues Mortes, a medieval walled French commune with plenty of stories to tell.

After exploring east of Languedoc, it’s time to cross over to Provence. Move to Hotel Chateau Des Alpilles in Saint Remy, and relax as you get ready for a drive across the bendy yet oh-so-breathtaking roads of Provence.

Start at the postcard-perfect L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and make your way east, through the Luberon to Gordes and Roussillion. Take some time to stroll around each of these old towns and take hikes around the surrounding forest trails. If you’re traveling from late June to early August, it’s worth driving all the way to Valensole to see – and frolic in – the copious lavender fields.

Once you’ve breathed in all the beauty of Southern France, return your car and fly out of Avignon.

Top tips for your South of France road trip

  • Fly in and out of Avignon
  • Reserve your rental car for pick-up and drop-off at Avignon
  • Book your hotels in advance – Uzes and Saint-Remy are perfect bases, but if you prefer to stay in one place, Avignon is a great central location

6. Toulouse to Montpellier

For a relaxed and balanced mix of city breaks, natural landscapes, and a touch of Spanish customs and cuisine, head to the warm and sunny Occitanie region.

Start your adventures in Toulouse, a vibrant and youthful city known for its warm brick and terracotta architecture, earning it its nickname “The Pink City”. You’ll want to stay for at least two days – Le Grand Balcon Hotel is a gorgeous base.

Walk around the Japanese garden in the center of Compans-Caffarelli park, visit the Basilica of Saint Sernin, and check out Roman art at the Musée Saint Raymond.

(Top tip: if you’re planning to explore Toulouse’s museums and monuments, get the Toulouse City Card for discounts to the city’s top sights and free travel on the local public transport.)

While you’re in Toulouse, drive a little over an hour north to Cordes sur Ciel, one of France’s most beautiful villages . This quaint medieval town was founded in 1222 and is a historic, gothic showcase of the evolution of architecture.

From Toulouse, slowly begin your drive east. Stop by Carcassonne and see sites of scenes from the Robin Hood movie. Spend a few hours exploring the Carcassonne Fortress.

Continue on to the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park , where you’ll want to stay for a couple of days, especially if you love nature trips. During the warm months, you can go hiking, cycling, kayaking, or swimming, or simply enjoy the journey around the nature park.

Stay at Villa d’illouvre , a cozy bed and breakfast nestled in nature. For a special treat, dine at Les Fleurs d’Olargues – make sure to book in advance!

Continue on to Montpellier and enjoy walks around the old town, visits to patisseries and cafes, and food festivals during the summer months. You’ll also be a short drive away from the beach, so stay for a bit longer if you want to soak up the sun. Domaine de Biar is a gorgeous boutique hotel just a short drive away from the center.

Top tips for your Toulouse to Montpellier road trip

  • Fly in to Toulouse and out of Montpellier or Nimes
  • Reserve your rental car for pick-up at Toulouse and drop-off at Montpellier
  • Book your hotels in advance – stay in Toulouse , at the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park , and Montpellier .

Thanks for your post, great tips as we are planning a driving trip to Normandy in May. We have done a driving tour of Provence a few years ago and you can’t beat getting up close to the charm of the french villages. The problem is so many gorgeous places to see and stay it’s hard to decide but of course half of the fun.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your Provence Countryside Bike Tour, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Paris (CDG). From Paris, take a TGV train to Avignon, either from the TGV station at Charles de Gaulle Airport or from the Gare de Lyon in Paris.

Alternatively, you may fly into Marseilles (MRS) or Nice (NCE) and take a train to Avignon. Please note that there are two train stations in Avignon—the TGV and the center station (Gare d'Avignon-Centre). The TGV station is approximately five miles (eight kilometers) from the center station downtown. If you happen to arrive at the Avignon Centre train station, there is a frequent bus shuttle service for a few euros that connects the two train stations. Taxis are also available at the center station for the 10-minute ride for approximately 20 euros.

Train schedules are available and tickets can be booked directly online at www.trainline.com or by using our in house travel agent services. (Please note: Train schedules change frequently. Please consult the Trainline site for the most up-to-date schedule.)

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you in the bus parking located in the north exit of the Avignon TGV Station at 11:00 AM on the first day of the trip. To find the north exit, follow signs to: Sortie Nord, the car rental area (location voitures) and to Parking P1. Exit the station and turn left in the direction of the large bus parking lot. Here the shuttle will be waiting for you with your Trek Travel guide just before your departure time. After a 40-minute private shuttle, you will arrive at Domaine de la Vallongue, a beautiful estate in the heart of the Massif des Alpilles (literally meaning the small Alpes), a natural site of the Bouches du Rhône department in Provence. From here, you will be set up on your Trek bike, have lunch, and start your first ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Hôtel Sous les Figuiers(+33 4 32 60 15 40), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. You may take a taxi to the first night’s hotel for approximately 100 euros.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at the Hôtel Sous Les Figuiers. After saying goodbye to your guides, you will take a private coach to the Avignon TGV or central station (approximately 30 minute shuttle). You can take a train to Paris or any other destination from either station. Please do not book any train before 12:00 PM noon to accommodate possible delays due to traffic.

Know Before You Go!

We want you to be fully prepared for your cycling vacation of a lifetime. This involves making sure that you choose the appropriate trip for you and that every aspect of your experience is flawless. Each Trek Travel trip is unique to ensure maximum enjoyment every time.

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • When it comes to French cuisine, we all know that France is famous for it, but it’s important to keep in mind that service can sometimes be slow, especially in Provence. But don’t let that discourage you! This is all part of the experience and it only adds to the charm of dining in France. Take your time, savor each bite, and enjoy the flavors that make French cuisine so amazing!
  • Biking in Provence: We want to make sure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience on this trip, so it’s important to note that, at times, the roads we’ll be riding on may be a bit narrow with some traffic. It is important to stay vigilant while taking in the views of this beautiful region.

Before and After Your Trip

Avignon, France

If you are planning on extending your Provence vacation and exploring the walled city of Avignon, besides enjoying the plethora of café terraces and great shopping and restaurant options, there are a number of must-sees. Palais des Papes stands as the largest Gothic palace in Europe. With the arrival of the popes in the 14th century, for a period known as the Avignon Papacy, the Palais des Papes was home to the Sovereign Pontiffs. One must also visit the nearby Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct that was used to bring Uzès spring water to Nîmes. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

Paris, France

Paris is home to many of the world’s best-known monuments and museums. A backdrop of many famous photos, the Arc de Triomphe sits majestically at the top end of the Champs-Elysées. You can go to the observation deck for an expansive view down the world-famous boulevard from Napoléon’s huge triumphal arch—the largest in the world. The Arc isn’t the only site that offers a great view of the city, however. Other monuments where you can enjoy impressive vistas include the white dome of the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, the 56th floor of the Tour Montparnasse, and of course at the summit of the most famous monument in Paris - la Tour Eiffel. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

Packing and Weather

April, May, June, September, and October in Provence usually bring clear, warm, and pleasant days with cool evenings. August days can be hot, as can the beginning of September, but it does cool off in the evenings. While less likely in the summer months, rain is always a possibility so be prepared with the proper rain gear in order to best enjoy your Provence Countryside bike tour. Regardless of the month, please note that the region sometimes experiences a famously strong wind, the Mistral, which can drop the temperatures significantly. Packing layers is always recommended. Consider checking weather and wind reports before you depart so you can be prepared. View our Packing List

We Spent Spring In The Italian Countryside, Here Are 8 Reasons To Visit Now

  • Visit Italy in spring to avoid crowds in popular tourist spots like Florence's Duomo.
  • Enjoy perfect temperatures for lardo tasting, wine tours, and hiking in Tuscany.
  • Take advantage of shoulder season hotel deals for a more affordable trip to stunning Italy.

Like any good millennial constantly seeking out my next Lizzie McGuire moment, Italy is always on my mind. But without an unlimited budget, and now a deeply ingrained "ick" for crowds and over-visited tourist spots (like the areas to avoid in Rome ), I knew I had to squeeze my Italy trip in before the high summer months.

It's no secret that this country is beautiful, and now with Italy's digital nomad visa readily available, I'd wager a guess that things are about to get even more crowded and potentially pricier than in years past. Plus, while there are plenty of underrated places in Italy to visit in the summer , especially in the countryside of Tuscany, they're bound to get busier during peak season.

So, before SummerTok takes over the Italian countryside, here are the reasons why you should hightail it to Italy, and more specifically Tuscany, in these last couple months of spring. Trust me, I lived it!

18 Secretly Perfect Places In Northern Italy

You avoid the crowds if you book before july, insiders say july to august is absolutely packed, so if you are hoping to go to some of the big tourist spots, do it now.

During the spring, the air is still a little crisp, there's always a threat of a light rain shower, and some seasonal sites still aren't quite open. However, if you're really hoping to hit some of the biggest tourist hot spots near the countryside--like Florence's Duomo, for example-- springtime is much better for avoiding crowds.

Except for an occasional school group flooding the streets at certain times (usually in the afternoons), the roads in both Lucca and Barga, the two towns I stayed in Tuscany, were clear and walkable without much hassle. This also means that the roads are clear for better photos of you living your best Italian countryside life!

Lardo Hits Different When It Isn't Egregiously Hot Outside

A tuscan delicacy, it just tastes all that much better when the temperature is perfect outside.

Springtime's perfect temperatures mean that anything you eat--and trust me, you're going to want to eat--will absolutely hit the spot while you're out and about exploring the best food that the Italian countryside can offer.

There's something just...less appetizing...about the Tuscan countryside's richer delicacies, like lardo and all sorts of pork treats, when you're in the heat of summer, but springtime weather means lardo in the morning and gelato in the afternoon, no problem.

For some of the best lardo tasting in Tuscany, head to Carrara, Italy (yes, Carrara as in the marble!), and visit Lardo di Colonnata di Giannarelli for a-cannot-miss sampling of their different lardo varietals.

I visited while on a Carrara tour with Toscana Tour Experiences , and it was by far one of my favorite things I did while in Italy. And I'm so grateful the weather was just right for both the tour and tasting.

Wine Tasting Al Fresco Is More Romantic In The Spring

I visited a biodynamic winery, and wine-tasting among flowers is just about the most gorgeous thing i've ever done.

Tucked away in the more rustic hills of Tuscany between the Apennines and Alps, Podere Còncori's almost 25 acres of vineyards feel like a secret garden. And better yet, this secret garden is in bloom around now!

A small, family-run winery that specializes in French varietals in an Italian setting, Podere Còncori's biodynamic philosophy leverages natural companion crops as a means by which to help care for the grape vines. That means, their vine rows are often coupled with other flowering plants, like roses and tulip trees, giving the vineyard a wild, yet beautifully maintained wining and dining experience.

To top it all off, you can finish your springtime wine romp with a hello from the vineyard's resident donkey, Pietro .

These Are The 10 Best Destinations For Wine Tourism In 2023

It's warm enough to bike, without fighting the crowds, seeing tuscany by bike is magical, but it's so much better when you're not dodging crowds.

I visited one of Tuscany's most charming towns in the countryside, Lucca, a medieval city surrounded by a 16th-century wall, originally intended as a defense fortification for what was once one of the richest towns in Tuscany. Today, the wall serves as a circumferential public park, standing at 36 feet tall in a 2.7-mile loop with over 185 acres of added green space to the town.

The absolute best way to enjoy the wall and get some of the best views of Lucca is by bike; however, given its higher elevation and little shade from buildings, the wall hike/path can get a bit warm. In the spring, though, the weather is still brisk enough to enjoy the ride without breaking too much of a sweat and once again, the lack of crazy crowds makes it so much easier to navigate and enjoy.

After your ride, be sure to visit the Roman amphitheater turned shopping quarter in Lucca , one of the city's other unique architectural features.

While I was staying in Lucca, Dustin Hoffman was filming a new movie there! Locals all explained that Lucca, as the setting for the film, was an integral part of the movie's storyline, so be sure to add Lucca to your bucket list of cities in Italy to visit for the spring of 2024 before that movie draws in even more crowds!

Seasonal Spring Foods Show Off A Different Side Of Tuscany

Summer and fall crops get all the credit, but springtime dishes show off italian culinary ingenuity..

Tuscany is lauded for its delicious foods and world-famous wine, and the seasonality of Italian cooking is part of what makes it all the more appealing. While summer and fall get all the attention (and quite frankly, I'm guilty of obsessing over that autumn squash too), I learned that Tuscany's use of spring seasonality showcases a different side to Italian cooking.

Yes, you still have your staples--pork, Florentine steak, ravioli-- but in the springtime, you can find some unexpected, but divine additions like springtime peas, early tomatoes, and crunchy greens that overall feel lighter, and dare I say healthier...but please, do eat all the pasta and steak you wish while on vacation!

It's The Perfect Temperature To Explore The Marble Quarries

One of my most unexpected but loved activities, be sure to beat the heat by visiting in the spring..

I know it sounds strange, but making the trek up to Carrara from my stay in Lucca was one of the most memorable experiences I had while taking my spring trip to Tuscany. Carrara, like I mentioned before, is the home to literal marble mines, scattered throughout a series of hillsides, mountains, and valleys. The marble varies in color from pink to classic white to stormy gray, and it's absolutely beautiful to see "in the wild."

Mining companies work in very intricate ways to carefully extract the marble, and the local governments do impose strict environmental and sustainability standards on the mining process to ensure we're not taking more than we need to. The spoils of the mine are transformed into gorgeous statues, tables, and other wares, crafted and sold at the foot of the mountain.

Our guide from Toscana Tour Experiences, who took us on an offroading trip winding up and down the mountainside mines, told us that we had picked the right season to explore the mines because during the summer it gets unbelievably hot with the sun reflecting off the marble and being at a higher elevation. So, in order to take this once-in-a-lifetime trip to the mines and do it right, springtime is your best bet.

Rockhounding Adventures: 12 Best Spots For Rock Collecting In The Country

Hiking trails are in full bloom, my "cinque borghi" hike was blossoming...literally.

Scattered throughout the hillside near Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa near Barga, is a cluster of small medieval villages, burrowed among the grassy slopes. Known collectively and colloquially as "Cinque Borghi," or the five villages, the roads and walking paths that connect the villages doubles as a fantastic hiking expedition for those who love beautiful vistas.

In the spring, the hills are buzzing (literally) with little critters waking up to the world again after winter and are absolutely blossoming with dandelions, daisies, wisteria, and tulip trees. The natural creeks in the areas are all filling with unspoiled water from the winter thaw, and it feels like the color is coming back into the countryside.

Firenze Rafting facilitates a great hike with a guide who takes you through the winding roads and points out the best places to view the five villages. As a non-hiker, I honestly do not think I would have enjoyed this as much as I did if it had not been springtime.

Shoulder Season Hotel Prices Are Great Deals

We stayed at the renaissance tuscany il ciocco resort & spa and the grand universe lucca properties, and we were obsessed.

Italy is home to many reasonably priced cities and towns, many of them under the radar, but a trip to world-famous Tuscany becomes all that more attainable when you book during the shoulder season in the springtime.

We stayed at three properties total: Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa near the small, countryside village of Barga and the two Grand Universe Lucca properties in the larger town of Lucca. While hunting for sample itineraries, it does appear that August has some decently priced dates, but bear in mind: a) the weather and b) summer vacation for students either traveling with family and/or on holiday.

However, at any of the properties I stayed with during my time in Tuscany, you're bound to have a really pleasant time no matter what, but it all just felt that much more special during the spring.

*Grand Universe La Residenza opened its doors only in July 2023 and remains Lucca's best-kept secret. Housed in a renovated Italian villa, the suites here are spacious and beautifully designed, ideal for honeymooners and even families. It's a smaller, more intimate property, and steady prices during high, low, and shoulder seasons will not last once visitors discover this hidden, Italian paradise!
