There is no direct route from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi as the island does not have its own airport, so you’ll need to combine transportation methods to make the trip which includes a compulsory ferry journey.

Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi by Flight and Ferry (via Phuket)

The quickest and easiest way of reaching Koh Phi Phi is to catch a flight out of Bangkok before hopping on a ferry to cross the Andaman Sea. One of the two possible flight options is arriving at Phuket International Airport before continuing by ferry.

From Bangkok direct flights to Phuket are available out of both airports, Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK), provided by several airlines including low-cost favorites AirAsia, Thai Smile and Thai VietJet Air. There are multiple flights per day and tickets can easily be snagged at just $25 each way. Flights to Phuket will take just over 1 hour.

From Phuket International Airport you’ll need to take a taxi to reach Rassada Pier on the outskirts of Phuket Town. The pier is less than 1 hour from the airport and will cost approximately $20 to reach by taxi. Alternatively, hop on the airport bus going to central Phuket Town before catching a taxi to the pier to save a little cash.

From Krabi Airport it is only a 30-minute trip down to the ferry terminal, Klong Jirad Pier. There’s an airport bus running into central Krabi Town for just $3, or you can arrange an airport taxi to take you direct to the pier for around $15. If taking the airport bus you’ll still need a taxi to continue to the pier but it can work out cheaper.

At Klong Jiad Pier there are two main ferry providers running to Koh Phi Phi: Andaman Wave Master and Chao Koh Ferry. Tickets will cost $15-20 and the trip usually takes less than 2 hours. Most buses to Phuket depart out of the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai). The bus station is quite far from central Bangkok and isn’t linked to the BTS train or MRT subway networks. With regular traffic it will be about a 30-minute taxi trip and shouldn’t cost more than $10.

This option is best suited to those who have problems with flying or enjoy the scenic window-gazing of a road trip.

The three main bus providers out of Southern Bus Terminal are Bus Express, Phuket Travel and Transport Co. Regular tickets tend to be around $20, while VIP tickets start at $30. Another company, Sombat Tour, also provide buses to Phuket out of their offices at Sombat Tour Viphawadee 13 near Chatuchak Park. There are also buses going to Krabi from Bangkok which are slightly quicker than those going to Phuket at around 12 hours. The majority of buses leave from Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai), while you can also go from Hua Lamphong and Khao San Songserm with a company called Songserm.

Prices are also similar to Phuket at $20 for economy class and $30 for VIP. The two main providers from Southern Bus Terminal are Transport Co and Lignite. Both companies have excellent reviews and are reliable with their punctuality and comfort. Buses are pleasant and come with all essentials including on-board toilets, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi access.

Where Is Phi Phi Island?

The Phi Phi islands (pronounced ‘Pee-Pee’) are located in the Andaman Sea of Thailand, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Phuket, and about the same distance from Krabi.

There are six islands in total, with the two main islands being Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don, and they’re all considered part of the Krabi province of Thailand.

The only inhabited island is Phi Phi Don, which has hotels, restaurants, and everything else you might want for a short stay.

How To Get To Phi Phi Island

The only way to reach the Phi Phi islands is by boat from Phuket or Krabi, and you can use either a ferry or a speedboat to get there.

There’s no airport in Koh Phi Phi, so the closest place to fly is the international airport in Phuket (HKT) or the one in Krabi (KBV). Both of these have cheap flights from Bangkok. You can shop for flights to Thailand on Skyscanner.

There are a bunch of boat companies making the trip to Phi Phi daily from either Phuket or Krabi, and they usually include hotel pickup and drop-off. You can also do the day trip from Koh Lanta, or as far away as Khao Lak Thailand.

The slow ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi Don takes about 2 hours, while the fast ferry (speedboat) takes half as long. If you’re starting from Krabi instead of Phuket, the boat travel times to Phi Phi are about 30 minutes shorter.

Keep in mind these are just transfers to the main island of Phi Phi Don. Once you arrive, you’ll need to arrange a longtail boat trip if you want to go touring Phi Phi Leh and the rest of the islands. You can arrange this on the spot at Ton Sai Beach in Phi Phi Don, and it’s usually pretty easy.

The other option is booking a day tour to Phi Phi by speedboat with a Phuket or Krabi-based tour company. There are shared or private tours, and they visit most of the main sights in one full day. This can be a great option if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the hassle.

Visiting Phi Phi Island – Tourist Fees

There are two tourist fees you have to pay when you arrive in the Phi Phi islands.

At Phi Phi Don island, there’s a cash fee of 20 baht per person, which is paid when you first land at the harbor. They collect this from everyone, and it helps pay for daily rubbish removal from the islands. This fee is one time only (not a daily fee).

At the national park areas, there’s a cash fee of 200 baht per person (~$6 USD), which is collected when you disembark at either Maya Bay or Bamboo Island (Koh Phai). This fee is charged every day you visit either of these two locations.

Some Phi Phi tours may already include these fees in the price, but usually you pay them separately in cash when you get off the boat.

There are some great things to see and do in the Phi Phi islands

Transport: How To Get Around The Phi Phi Islands

There are no cars or motorbike rentals in the Phi Phi islands, and they’re not needed at all — if you’re staying on Phi Phi Don island, the whole town is small enough to be easily walkable on foot. Bicycles can also be rented.

You can hire a longtail boat in Phi Phi Don to take you to nearby islands like Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island. This can be booked online or else you can charter it in person at the Tonsai harbor after you arrive on Phi Phi Don.

The longtails are smaller boats, but they have room for up to 8 passengers, so you can share a boat with friends or other travelers to make it more cost effective.

Another option is kayaking at Ko Phi Phi Don. This is cheaper than a boat rental, and you can use kayaks to reach some of the hidden beaches on Phi Phi Don, like Nui Bay and Monkey Beach.

Best Things To Do In Phi Phi Island Thailand

The white sand beach at Maya Bay is one of the most famous and photogenic places in Thailand, and it was the main thing responsible for bringing tourism to the Koh Phi Phi islands. In fact, it’s now one of the most famous beaches in the world!

The entire beach is surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. The water is clear turquoise with baby sharks swimming around, and the sand is white as snow. Everything about it looks perfect. Yep, this is paradise!

Of course, the beauty of Maya Bay has attracted the tourist hordes, just like any of the amazing places in the world, but if you time your visit right you can still enjoy the beach without too many people.

Maya Bay is located on Phi Phi Leh island, where it’s accessed by landing a boat at Loh Samay Bay (on the back side of the island), and then doing a short and easy shaded walk through the jungle to get to the beach. The walk is flat and takes about 5 minutes.

In the past, boats could go inside of Maya Bay and land directly on the beach, but they don’t do that anymore. The Thai government has spent the last several years working on conservation, so the only way to get to the beach now is to walk to it from the back side of the island.

I think this change was a good idea because it keeps the bay clear of boats, although I do miss those perfect postcard photos of Thai longtail boats sitting on the beach at Maya Bay.

Another thing you should know is that Maya Bay is frequently closed for conservation at least a couple months every year during the rainy season.

In 2022 and 2023, Maya Bay was closed to tourists for 2 months (August and September) during the low season, but it re-opened for business on October 1, 2023. The bay is now open for visitors again in 2024!

Maya Bay has a small shop with snacks and drinks, and there are restrooms by the path when you first disembark at Loh Sama Bay.

The main beach is about 250 meters long, and the end of the beach has a shallow cave that’s nice for photos.

If you want to escape the crowds, there are usually less people at the far end of the beach.

Most Koh Phi Phi tour packages give you 1 hour at Maya Bay, which is plenty of time to explore the beach, take pictures from every angle, and dip your feet in the water (swimming isn’t allowed at Maya Bay anymore).

I have to say the beach has been kept very clean, and we didn’t notice hardly any trash, even though as many as 5,000 tourists come to this beach sometimes in a single day! The park rangers have done a good job with cleanup.

Overall, Maya Bay is an amazing experience, and it’s one of our favorite beaches in the world!

• Pileh Lagoon

This surreal turquoise lagoon surrounded by giant rock walls is one of the best things to see on Phi Phi island in Thailand.

The lagoon is only accessible by boat. Most Koh Phi Phi tours include a stop here, and the smaller boats can float into the lagoon and circle it, giving you up-close views of the impressive limestone karsts.

It’s more amazing than it looks in photos, and we may have enjoyed this spot even more than Maya Bay!

• Phi Phi Viewpoint

The Phi Phi viewpoint is a short hike on the island of Phi Phi Don, with epic views of the town and most of the island, and Phi Phi Leh visible in the distance.

There are actually three different viewpoints at various levels on the hill, but viewpoints #2 and #3 are the ones you really want to see because they’re higher and have the best views of the island without being blocked by any trees.

Phi Phi viewpoint #2 has broad panoramic views of the island and the entire town, with a nice wooden platform and some flat rocks where you can take photos. This was probably our favorite spot.

Viewpoint #3 has even higher views because it’s located at the top of the hill and you’re basically sitting in a tree house, with picnic tables and a hammock.

It’s very quiet and I’m sure it would be a great spot for sunset.

Phi Phi viewpoint #2 can be reached in about 20 minutes of uphill walking (mostly on stairs) if you start from the town center of Phi Phi Don island, and then it’s another 10-15 minutes to walk from there to viewpoint #3.

There’s a small fee to get into viewpoints #1 and #2, and then another small fee if you go to viewpoint #3. In total, we paid 50 baht per person (~$1.50). All of the viewpoints are very worthwhile!

• Bamboo Island (Koh Phai)

This is a small flat island located northeast of Phi Phi Don, with less people and a nice sandy beach covering most of the island.

Lots of Phi Phi island tours include this place in the itinerary, but it never feels too crowded, and if you walk around the side of the island for awhile you may have it all to yourself.

Just like Maya Bay, Bamboo Island is considered part of the Koh Phi Phi national park, so you have to pay the park entrance fee to land on the island and walk around the beach.

The center of the island has some trees, including the bamboo shoots that give the island its name, so you can escape the sun for awhile when you’re not in the water.

Overall, Bamboo Island is a great place to swim and soak up sun without the crowds of Maya Bay!

• Monkey Bay

This is a fun little beach where you can see wild monkeys on Phi Phi Don island. There are dozens of monkeys (long-tailed macaques) living on the beach, and you can usually see baby monkeys too.

The monkeys are fun for pictures, but they can be aggressive if they’re provoked, so don’t try to tease them or take their food. They’ve also been known to steal people’s glasses and other small items, so keep a close eye on them!

It’s best to go to this beach at low tide, when more monkeys come down to the beach. At high tide, the beach is mostly underwater and the monkeys retreat to the rocks, where they can’t be seen as well.

• Monkey Beach

Not to be confused with Monkey Bay, this is a different spot on the other side of Phi Phi Don island. This one also has monkeys, but they’re not seen as often, and it’s a bigger beach with more room to walk around.

The main reason to come to Monkey Beach is for the stunning scenery. It’s a really nice beach with soft sand and a backdrop of jungle covered limestone mountains.

This is one of the most beautiful spots in Koh Phi Phi Thailand, and you can reach it by boat or kayak from Loh Dalum Beach. Just remember to keep an eye on the monkeys, because they can be sneaky.

Monkey Beach

This is a small hidden bay on Phi Phi Don island with a nice beach and towering limestone rocks.

It’s possible to reach Nui Bay by sea or by land. From Loh Dalum Beach, you can rent a kayak or a boat to go there, which is how people usually get there. Kayaking to the bay will take about 45 minutes with a leisurely pace.

Otherwise, it’s also possible to reach Nui Bay by hiking from the Phi Phi viewpoint. It takes about 1 hour, and you’ll want to bring plenty of water and mosquito spray just in case.

If you get to Nui Bay in the morning (around 8 AM), it’s quiet and you may have it all to yourself for awhile until the tour boats start arriving later in the morning!

Best Beaches In Phi Phi Thailand

There are a lot of beaches in the Phi Phi islands, but obviously the hands down winner for scenery is the one at Maya Bay.

Some other beaches with great sand and swimming are the ones at Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach, and Nui Bay. You can watch the sunset at Long Beach .

If you want a quiet beach with nearby hotels on Phi Phi Don, some great options are Long Beach , Loh Moo Dee Beach , and Loh Ba Kao Bay . All of these have nice white sand and hotels near the beach. The best one for sunsets is Long Beach.

What To Bring

Here are some packing suggestions for your trip to Koh Phi Phi Island Thailand.

Most of the items below can probably be found on Phi Phi Don in a pinch, but the quality of stuff you buy on the street won’t be guaranteed (personally, I’m not about to use a junky knockoff bag from a street vendor to protect my expensive camera gear).

It’s best to buy vetted products online!

• Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats around PP island. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
• Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
• Snorkeling Gear: Good for exploring the clear waters around Koh Phi Phi island. Snorkels and masks can be borrowed or rented from the boat companies too, but if you plan to stay on the island or do multiple tours then it’s better to bring your own gear.
• Water Shoes: These can come in handy sometimes while snorkeling in case you need to walk on rocks to get out of the water.
• Sunscreen: There is usually some shade in the speedboats and longtail boats, but you can still get roasted while swimming or walking on the beach, so you’ll want to bring a hat and sunscreen for the boat tours.
• Snacks & Drinks: You’ll want to pack some snacks and drinks in the boat when touring the islands. You can bring these from Phuket or Krabi, or there are plenty of cheap snack and drink stands in Ko Phi Phi Don near the port.

Can You Fly A Drone At The Phi Phi Islands?

Yes and no. Thailand is pretty relaxed about drones, and you can fly them in most of the islands, but they don’t allow you to fly them in the national parks.

That includes Ko Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island, which are patrolled by park rangers who will fine you if you’re caught flying a drone. They’re especially strict at Maya Bay, and the rangers there are watching all areas of the beach constantly.

However, if you’re discreet it’s still possible to fly from other locations. For example, you can park your boat at Pileh Lagoon or Viking Cave and launch the drone from there, and usually no one is likely to notice or care unless a park ranger boat happens to drive by and see you do it.

The drone restrictions don’t apply to Phi Phi Don island at all. You can fly drones anywhere on Phi Phi Don without a problem, although you’ll still want to be considerate and only fly in places where it won’t bother people, of course.

Other Tips For Phi Phi Island Thailand

• Credit Cards: Some places accept cards, but many do not. Most restaurants are cash only, although a few higher end restaurants accept cards. Use your card for big things like hotels and tours, and save your cash for smaller things like the amazing Thai street food.
• ATM: On Phi Phi Don island, there are ATMs all over town. We used Krungsri in several locations and never had any issues. The pull fee was like 220 baht and they let you withdraw large amounts of cash at a time.
• Cell Service: Phone reception is strong on Phi Phi Don, but you may lose signal while touring around Phi Phi Leh island (including Maya Bay) because of the steep mountains that cover the island.
• WiFi: The internet situation is improving, and a fair number of hotels and restaurants in Phi Phi Don have good WiFi now. The internet quality is not as good as Phuket, but it’s generally good enough for emails, browsing, and streaming.
• Electricity: The power is almost always on. During the rainy season we lost power a few times after storms, but it came back quickly.

• Convenience Stores: There are plenty of small mini marts on Phi Phi Don where you can buy cheap snacks, drinks, toiletries, sunscreen, and other such things. Just remember their selection is smaller than what you’ll find shopping in Phuket.
• Hygiene: We ate tons of the cheapest Thai street food and never had any stomach issues, but remember not to drink the tap water. Only use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth.
• Language: Just like in Phuket, the locals in the Koh Phi Phi islands don’t speak a lot of English, but it’s easy enough to communicate about hotels, restaurants, tours, etc.
• Religion: Most of the locals in Phi Phi Don are Muslim (more than 80 percent). One of the funny side effects of this is that there are lots of cats on the island, but no dogs. We enjoyed the cats. There’s only one mosque on Phi Phi island, and it’s not noisy, so you won’t be kept awake at night.
• Mosquitoes: We didn’t see any mosquitoes in the Ko Phi Phi islands except for a few at Monkey Bay. There have been some cases of Dengue Fever here, but it’s not really something to stress about. You can buy bug repellent in Phuket, Krabi, or Phi Phi Don if you need it. Malaria isn’t present here.

Best Restaurants In Phi Phi Don

Even though Phi Phi Don is a small island, there are lots of great restaurants to choose from, with different kinds of cuisine including Thai, European, and Asian food.

Here are just a few of our top restaurant recommendations:

• ACQUA : This is probably the single nicest restaurant in Phi Phi Don, although it’s a little on the pricey side. They have a good range of Thai and European dishes, with indoor and outdoor seating.
• Mango Garden : This air-conditioned cafe is one of the first places we ate in Phi Phi island. They have a whole menu dedicated to mango sticky rice. Great for breakfast or a snack while waiting for the ferry! They also have free WiFi and plenty of power outlets.
• JaJa Cafe & Spice : Awesome pancakes and acai fruit smoothie bowls!
• Anna’s Restaurant : European and Thai food in PP island with a good selection and reasonable prices. Try the pineapple fried rice.
• 23° Roasters Cafe : A relatively new cafe with great cakes and pastries. Indoor seating and super fast WiFi.
• Papaya Restaurant : Indian and Thai food outside of the main street on PP island.
• Garlic 1992 : Good Thai food in a humble setting. As you can tell by the name, they’ve been in business since 1992.

Again, this is far from a complete list of every good restaurant in Phi Phi Don island. With a bit of exploring, you’re sure to find some other gems.

Don’t forget about the yum Thai street food stalls and small family owned restaurants, such as Only Noodles . These places are super cheap and the food is usually amazing. In fact, we ate at these places for almost all of our meals in Phi Phi island!

Last, but not least, if you’re craving western food then there’s even a McDonald’s and Burger King when you first step off the boat at Ton Sai beach.

Is Koh Phi Phi Safe?

Yes, Phi Phi island in Thailand is generally a very safe place to stay.

We’ve spent weeks staying in Phi Phi Don and exploring the whole town, and never felt unsafe. Just take normal precautions and you shouldn’t have any issues with crime.

If anything, we actually found the locals more friendly in Phi Phi than in Phuket or Krabi.

Best Time To Visit Phi Phi

The best time to visit the Phi Phi islands in Thailand depends on what you’re looking for.

The weather in the Andaman Sea of Thailand (including Phi Phi) is best from November to April, when it’s more dry and sunny, and the sea conditions are better for boat tours. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so it’s more crowded and hotels in Phi Phi Don are more likely to be fully booked.

The weather is not as good from May to October. There are more rainy days, and there are frequent storms in the evenings. However, there are less tourists in these months and it’s still possible to have a great trip if your time is a bit more flexible.

If you visit Phi Phi in the rainy season, it’s good to have a few extra days to spare in case there’s some junky weather leading to the boats being canceled for a day or two.

Are The Phi Phi Islands Worth It?

Yes, the Phi Phi islands are absolutely worth a visit! The scenery is amazing and the prices for everything are very affordable.

I’d say it’s the single best place to go in Thailand, and also one of the best places in Southeast Asia. Sure, the crowds are annoying, but sights like Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon have very few equals on Earth.  

Phi Phi Or James Bond Island: Which Is Better?

So which is better, Phi Phi or James Bond Island ? That’s an important question.

They’re both great, but I have to say Phi Phi island is better. No offense to James Bond island , but Phi Phi has the best scenery above and below the ocean, with clear blue water and lots of fish and coral to see while snorkeling or scuba diving.

There’s also more to see and do in Phi Phi overall. Even if you don’t care about snorkeling, it’s hard to beat Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, and the other epic sights in the Phi Phi islands. They are truly world class.

Don’t get me wrong, Phang Nga Bay is still amazing and you should definitely see James Bond island if you’re able. Try to see both Phi Phi and James Bond if you have time! Unfortunately you can’t see them both in one day since they’re located in opposite directions from Phuket (south vs north), but it’s possible to see both places in two days!

How Long To Stay

You can see the highlights of the Koh Phi Phi islands in one full day tour, including Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Bamboo Island, and more. This is true even if you’re starting from Phuket or Krabi, as opposed to staying on Phi Phi Don.

However, staying a few days in the Phi Phi islands will give you more time to enjoy the scenery and see some extra things like the Phi Phi viewpoint, or the many hidden beaches on Phi Phi Don. It also gives you a buffer in case of junky weather.

We really enjoyed all of our days spent in Koh Phi Phi, and if you have enough time to spare then I think staying a few days is better than doing a one day trip from Phuket or Krabi.

3-Day Itinerary For Phi Phi Island Thailand

Here’s what a sample itinerary for the Phi Phi islands could look like, assuming you spend 3 days staying on Phi Phi Don and touring all of the islands:

• Day 1: Phi Phi Don . Arrive in the Phi Phi islands from Phuket or Krabi. Check in to your hotel and unpack your things. Hike to the Phi Phi viewpoint and enjoy the scenery for awhile, and then head over to Loh Dalum Beach, where you can take a boat or kayak to Nui Bay and Monkey Beach.
• Day 2: Phi Phi Leh . Take a longtail boat over to Phi Phi Leh island. Tour the famous beach at Maya Bay, and then go see Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave. If you have time, stop and visit Monkey Bay on your way back to town.
• Day 3: Misc . Take a boat to Bamboo Island and spend a couple hours swimming and soaking up sun. Head back to Phi Phi Don and explore the town and miscellaneous beaches before going back to Phuket or Krabi.

Hi there. It depends what you’re hoping to do in the Phi Phi islands. If you’re mainly wanting a private boat trip where you can avoid the worst crowds at Maya Bay etc, I would actually recommend staying a couple nights in Phi Phi Don if possible, and then hiring a boat from there. It’s easy to charter a boat in Phi Phi, and this will allow you to get an early start for sightseeing all around the islands before the crowds of day trippers come from Phuket. Phi Phi has luxury hotels too like Saii and Zeavola Resort . Otherwise, if you’re just wanting to do a day trip to Phi Phi and a convenient area to stay in Phuket nearby, then anywhere in south Phuket would work for that. Two good options in the southern part of the island are Sinae Phuket or Royal Phuket City Hotel .

Koh Phi Phi was made famous when The Beach shot its infamous (and stunning) scenes on Maya Bay. But the Phi Phi islands have been around long before the 2000 cult classic movie and will (hopefully) be around for years to come. The Thai government made the decision to close Maya Bay in 2018 to allow the environment to recover. Luckily, there are plenty of other reasons to come see the Phi Phi islands. 

About the trip from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi 

The distance from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi is nearly 700 km (about 430 miles). Too long for a Koh Phi Phi day trip. However, once you arrive on the islands, you’ll be glad you have a few days to explore. 

Getting to the island will require you to take a bus, train, or a flight, followed by a ferry. Luckily, the ferry ride through the Andaman Sea is beautiful. You’ll see the stunning karst formations and crystal blue waters that Thailand is famous for.

How to get from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi 

Bus + Ferry

For budget travelers, one of the best ways to get from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi is the ferry + bus combination. Everything is booked together, so you’re guaranteed not to miss your connection. 

After your bus ride, you will take a ferry the rest of the way. Depending on where you catch your ferry, the boat portion of the trip will take about an hour or two.

Bus + Ferry options include an express bus + ferry, the VIP bus + ferry, the high-speed bus + ferry, and the economy bus + ferry. Each option allows one large piece of luggage, but the amount of time it takes to get from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi varies depending on the company you choose.

Express Bus + Ferry

The express bus + ferry is operated by Paradive Travel and is about $38 per person. The buses have AC, reclining seats, and a bathroom, but they will still stop along the way. 

The Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi bus is relatively comfortable and has more space than other bus options. You’ll meet the bus at Bangkok Train Station, which isn’t the most convenient location, especially due to the 19:00 departure time. Make sure to leave with plenty of time because Bangkok traffic can be brutal. 

The benefit of the express bus is the journey is only 18 hours and 30 minutes. You’ll arrive on Koh Phi Phi at 13:30 the following afternoon, ready for an afternoon in the sun. 

These tickets can be refunded up to 48 hours before traveling and changed up to 12 hours before traveling. 

VIP Bus + Ferry

The VIP bus + ferry is run by Thai Sriram and costs about $50 per person each way. 

It’s a bit more expensive, but you get more amenities than the express bus + ferry option. In addition to AC, bathrooms, and reclining seats, they also provide blankets, water and snacks. 

The bus will stop for bathroom/stretch breaks as well, which you’ll need because this journey takes a whopping 20.5 hours. 

The bus departs at 20:00, so you’ll save on accommodation. You’ll arrive at Ton Sai pier in Koh Phi Phi at 16:30, ready for a sundowner or two! 

This company allows you to cancel your ticket up to 48 hours in advance.

High-speed Bus + Ferry

The high-speed bus + ferry is operated by Songerm. It costs approximately $37 per person and has similar amenities to the VIP bus. They don’t offer snacks but do provide water. There are no bathrooms on the bus, but they’ll make stops along the way. This will also be an overnight bus. At the moment, no schedule is provided. 

The downside is the bus seats are not the most comfortable, and it’s a long journey. You’ll meet the bus at the Bangkok Southern Terminal, which isn’t the most central location if you have been exploring the city.

Economy Bus + Ferry

The final option is the economy bus + ferry by Khao San Tara Tour. Ironically, the economy tickets start at $52 per person – the most expensive on this list. Even though it’s a bit more expensive, it includes a meal with your ticket. You’ll depart at 16:30, so it’s an overnight journey. 

In addition to AC, reclining seats, and bathrooms, you’re given a blanket. 

The bus will make a few stops along the way before dropping you at the pier. The ferry arrives at Ton Sai pier at 11:00 am, making this journey eighteen and a half hours long. 

These tickets are non-refundable once they have been booked. 

Train, Bus + Ferry 

The train from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi is another option. Since there is no direct train to the island, you have to take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. The train tickets via Surat Thani cost about $30 for a 2nd class ticket.

Once you arrive in Surat Thani, you need to take a bus + ferry combination to get to Koh Phi Phi. This is a popular tourist route, so there is a combined ticket option once per day at 8, arriving on Koh Phi Phi at 12:00. 

Flight to Phuket + Ferry

It’s possible to travel via plane, but there is no direct Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi flight. You first need to fly to Phuket and then ferry over to Koh Phi Phi. 

There are several daily flights between Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Muang (DMK) airports and Phuket and can cost as little as $10 and as much as $200.

From the airport in Phuket, you have the option to take a 45-minute bus or a 30-minute taxi to Rassada Pier. The ferry takes about 1-1.5 hours, and there are three departures daily: 9:30, 11:00, and 14:00. 

Flight to Krabi + Speedboat

Flying from Bangkok to Krabi is another option. 

Once you land in Krabi, make your way to Krabi Town and hire a longtail boat. These take you to Railay Beach, where you can transfer to a speedboat. The speedboat takes you the final 30 minutes over to Koh Phi Phi.

Flight to Trang + Speedboat

While there are no direct flights from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi, you can fly from Bangkok to Trang and then ferry the rest of the way. There are direct flights a few times a day at very reasonable prices. 

After the hour and fifteen-minute flight, you’ll need to take a one-hour shuttle to Hat Yao Pier.

Tigerline runs one ferry between Hat Yao and Koh Phi Phi per day, it departs at 12 and takes about an hour. 

The Thai tourist trail is such a well-oiled machine. There are always plenty of people to help you find your way. Make sure you are wearing your sticker with your final destination in a spot where people can see it. That way, you’ll always get pointed in the right direction.  

Just know that the beautiful beaches and those stunning sunsets are worth it!

Thailand is a HUGE country and is intimidating to plan for only a 10 day trip. When deciding to visit Thailand, it’s so hard to pick between the rich history of Bangkok and the relaxing island life of the islands. But lucky for you, you can see it all with this guide.

In this 10 day Thailand itinerary, you will get to see the best temples to visit in Bangkok, floating markets near Bangkok, Phi Phi Island, how to score a private Maya Bay tour from Phi Phi island, and SO much more!

I have been to many, many beautiful beaches but nothing compares to Thailand! This place is seriously gorgeous! From rooftop bars in Bangkok to monkey filled beaches in Phi Phi, this country is a must-see.

– Packing Essentials –

• Light weight cover ups for temples and restaurants. I brought several Kimonos because a lot of rooftop bars and temples had a strict dress code of no shoulders. Bangkok is extremely hot and humid in the summer months, so bringing a lightweight Kimono saved my life! You can browse colors and patterns here .

• A small bag that can be worn across your chest and on the front of your body. There are a lot of pick-pockets in Bangkok (well, any big city really). Make sure you are not wearing any flashy brands or backpacks – this makes you an easy target. This one is sooo cute and comes in tan and black !

• A cute but inexpensive pair of sunglasses! Remember, you will be at the beach. You don’t want an expensive pair to get scratched or stolen. This style is extremely flattering on most face shapes .

• Any of my Carry On Essentials
• A good book for a long flight
• Travel Insurance !! If you are ever planning a trip abroad I would highly recommend considering travel insurance. If you are confused about what that is or if you need it, read this guide here !

Day 1: Looong flight

Like, seriously long.. We spent a full 24 hours traveling to Thailand from Las Vegas & because of the time change, you lose an extra day. If you are traveling anywhere from the USA, your flight will be long and brutal. Make sure you find a good airline that provides free entertainment and pack yourself some melatonin for the flight!

Some back story first… My two main hobbies include making perfect itineraries (hence the blog name) & looking for flight deals! I have many flight tips , but the best one I can give you is make Google Flights your best friend! I found round trip flights from Los Angeles to Bangkok for only $430 , YES you heard me!

We flew Xaimen airlines (still do not know how to pronounce it correctly). We went into this flight extremely scared we were going to have a travel nightmare with flights that cheap, but this was the best airline I have ever flew on! They came around with FREE wine every 30 minutes, fed us  4+ times (not kidding), and had an amazing selection of movies! I would highly recommend this airline.

TIP: Make sure you book your hotel for the day you land in Bangkok. It’s very easy to make this mistake because of the time change, you could land 2 days later!!

Day 2: Arrive in Bangkok

Depending on what time you arrive, you will be fighting jet lag majority of the day. I would try to keep yourself as busy as possible by finding a good place to eat, swimming at your hotel pool, or catching the sunset at one of many rooftop bars.

TIP: Uber is very popular and inexpensive in Thailand! You can catch an Uber from the airport to your hotel in Bangkok.

There are many districts in Bangkok, so it will depend on the vacation style you are looking for. I stayed in Sukhumvit , because I wanted to be near the nightlife. I read several articles online that Bangkok’s traffic is horrid, so I tried to stay as close to the nightlife as possible.

Finding a hotel in Bangkok can be extremely overwhelming because they are inexpensive and all 5*. I stayed at Column Bangkok Hotel , right in the middle of all the popular rooftop bars. This way, you are a short walk or Tuk Tuk ride away!

It happened to be St. Patrick’s day when we arrived. Let me tell ya.. Bangkok is NOT the place to be for St. Patrick’s day. Only the tourists know that it’s even a holiday!

We luckily found a tiny, hole-in-the-wall Irish pub that was packed with Irish travelers. Why they would pick Bangkok for St. Patrick’s day when they live in Ireland is just bonkers… but whose asking me?

If we are being completely honest, we picked this pub because of the very inviting name…. The Drunken Leprechaun!   Which I recommend this quirky bar at any time of the year.

We were beyond jet lagged from our 24+ hour flight, so we went home after the live music ended so we would be fully rested for our first full day in Thailand.

My recommendations for things to do in Bangkok when you arrive:

• Relax at your hotel rooftop pool
• Book a Thai Massage
• Get a fish pedicure
• Check out a rooftop bar in Sukhumvit for sunset
• Get your first, authentic Thai meal

Day 3: Floating Markets Near Bangkok

I always plan a free day the first day of a vacation, especially with that big of a time change, but most floating markets are only open on the weekends . There are so many good floating markets close to Bangkok – the ones we went to were just 30 minutes from Bangkok’s city center!

If you are looking into going to a floating market in Bangkok, I am sure you have heard of the Damneon Floating Market . It is the biggest and most popular market in the area. We didn’t go there because when something usually reads “most popular” or “book one of the hundreds of tours,” I tend to steer clear!

I wanted to go to a floating market to get a feel for the authentic Thailand culture, not a big tourist trap of overly priced souvenirs.

Instead of touristy Damneon, check out two smaller markets: Khlong Lat Mayom & Taling Chan . These markets are completely different from each other and only 5 minutes apart. This way you get to see two of them 🙂

Start at Khlong Lat Mayom, which is was more of a food market, so definitely go to this place hungry!

Spend the day wandering the alleys, buying souvenirs and taking a long tail boat tour through the neighboring canals. You can either go on a large boat tour with others or hop on a private tour.

We asked a local where we can go on a long-tail boat tour and he took us around to a back alley to get on our “private tour.” Our “excited to be in a new country” selves were sold easily and we hopped in. As he started to pull away from the market into the neighborhood canals, we  I began panicking realizing we were heading to our voluntary kidnapping!

Luckily we had a trusty guide that brought us back to the market in one piece, with flowers he picked from a garden too!

We next went to Taling Chan Floating Market. This was not so much a floating market, but more of a market next to a river. Still beautiful, but no one selling goodies on boats!

I think it’s still worth it to go though because I liked the goodies better! The other floating market had a lot of standard, tourist souvenirs. This market seemed more like a local market with home goods, clothing, and jewelry that you would actually want to buy!

TIP: Uber, Grab and Taxis are all very easy to grab at these markets. We always had phone service and transportation without a rental car was never an issue.

Day 4: Finally, your free day!

Spend the morning grabbing coffee at a local cafe, relax in a fish pedicure salon and head back to your hotel to spend some time in the sun!

We stayed at The Column Hotel and it was luxurious! Very cheap and the rooms were outrageously huge. They served free breakfast and had a dreamy rooftop pool that was hard to leave.

Ideas for your free day in Bangkok:

• Sign up for a food tour or Cooking Class
• Day trip to Erawan Waterfall –  About 2.5 hours from Bangkok
• Thai Massages
• Wander the bustling streets
• Shopping at the large, indoor mall

Day 5: Temples to Visit in Bangkok

The temples are located within walking distance of each other and can easily be done in a day. The architecture of these temples are outstanding and will make the large crowds and heat completely somewhat bearable!

The thing I looked forward to the most out of this whole trip was going to The Grand Palace . I get mad all over again while typing this, but the King comes at unexpected times and will shut down the whole joint! I stood in front of those giant gold gates for 10 minutes before reality hit me that I was never going to be let in.

TIP: Plan your temple day on one of the first days just in case it is closed, that way you at least have the opportunity to go another day! 

I want to mention before writing anything else : BEWARE of scammers! I have never in my life seen so many people trying to scam you. And boy, are they tricky! We were approached by many English-speaking men dressed in suites that tell you that all the temples are closed for another 2 hours! Then they show you to a tour that lasts two hours that you can do in the mean time. This is all a scam, the temples are not closed ( except the rare times the king is there, like our unfortunate time, meh ).

TRUST NO ONE IN THE OLD CITY, SERIOUSLY!

Take an Uber or taxi to the old city and start with the Wat Arun temple that is across the river – The ferry to get across is only ~$0.04! This temple is gorgeous – all white with hand-painted ceramic detail.

This is the most picturesque temple out of all of them. The several sides and winding staircases makes it extremely easy to snap a picture without anyone in the background.

Nearby you can check out the reclining Budah, which is.. eh . If you’re already down there it’s kind of a “why not just stop in,” kind of site. This statue is located in the Wat Pho , which is walking distance from the Grand Palace.

TIP: Wear socks! You must take off your shoes to enter the temples and a bunch of sweaty tourist feet is NOT something you will want lingering on your feet!

On your way back to your hotel, you can wander around Pak Klong Talat Flower Market and get yourself some beautiful flowers for your room for only $0.10!

This is reason #2 why you should do the temples towards the beginning of your stay in Bangkok, so you can enjoy your freshly picked flowers in your hotel room. 🙂

Day 6: Traveling from Bangkok to Phi Phi Island!

Phi Phi Island is an extremely popular destination, for good reason! You are surrounded by limestone cliffs, golden sand, warm water, long tail boats lining the shore, and monkeys in the trees!

Tourists started to flood here after the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, The Beach . In this movie, they show many shots of the nearby island and famous bay, Maya Bay . You can access this bay very easily by long tail boat from Koh Phi Phi, which brings a lot of tourists to stay here.

Catch a flight from Bangkok to Phuket in the morning, so you have enough time to reach the ferry terminal before it closes. Ferries run every 2.5 hours starting at 8:30am to 3pm and it will take you about 45 minutes to get to the terminal from the airport.

You can purchase the ferry tickets when you arrive, but if you are traveling for a major holiday or event, I would book them in advance.  You can take a look at the ferry times here. 

TIP: Don’t plan on taking the last ferry out in case your flight is delayed or you miss the ferry. I would plan to reach the ferry for the 1:30pm departure time or earlier. 

We stayed at Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort , which was amazing! They had a private beach, free breakfast, infinity pool, free boat ride from the pier, and the rooms were beautiful. You are nestled up in the cliff and can actually hear the monkeys talking to each other.

Once you are checked into our hotel, hike up to Phi Phi viewpoint for sunset. This is the thing to do at sunset because the whole island will be up there! For details on the hike up, I found this guide incredibly useful !

I promise you it won’t feel like a typical overcrowded tourist spot, but rather a social event! Everyone will be blasting music, drinking beer, and meeting other travelers from all over the world.

From this viewpoint, you can see the unique shape of this island. Saddle shaped with two mountain points and a narrow beach going along the center. The water on each side of the island will be a completely different color due to the depth and light reflection.

TIP: Bring money!! They charge about $2 USD to enter the viewpoint. There were a lot of angry travelers who hiked up the mountain only to find that they had to pay and were turned away.

Once thing that really surprised me was the nightlife in Phi Phi Island. I am from Las Vegas and boy does this island know how to party!

Every daytime restaurant turns into a nightclub that merges with the restaurant next to them. There are no cars on the island so just walking the streets is like a big block party.

I highly recommend checking out Slinky’s beach club and fire show, this place was crazy.

TIP: This island has a lot of mosquitos! Here is a great guide on protecting yourself from the Zika Virus !

Day 7: Phi Phi Island Boat Tour

Out of all the days on this 10 Day Thailand Itinerary, this one is by far the best! Getting to explore the nearby islands, reefs, and snorkel spots was such an amazing day 🙂

Day 8: Traveling from Phi Phi to Phuket

Before heading to your next stop, start your morning with $7 (USD) Thai massages right on the beach! These can be located along the main beachfront. You will see huts with Thai ladies begging you to come in for a massage.

Be prepared for another long travel day. I know this will be exhausting in the moment, but this itinerary allows you to see so much of Thailand in such a short amount of time. If you can extend your 10 day Thailand itinerary to 11 days, I would recommend spending an extra day in Phi Phi! 

Take the same ferry back to Phuket, catch a ride to Patong Beach area, and arrive at your hotel.

I highly recommend staying at my favorite hotel/hostel to date: LubD Patong Beach.   This place is adorable with the best vibe! When we checked into the hotel they were doing lobby karaoke and announcing their 25th sign up for the bar crawl that night! All the staff closed up the bar and joined us on our night out on Bangla Road.

I would honestly say this place made my trip to Thailand. I am still in contact with a lot of the people I met at this hotel!

This place is seriously crazy – the only way to describe it is Las Vegas without any rules, ha! Bangla road is famous for its Ping Pong shows… which, I will let you research those on your own 🙂

Day 9: Last Day in Phuket

Phuket is home to the oh-so-famous Patong Beach . When I went, we were not there long.

Seconds after you lay down your towel and begin relaxing on the beach, you will be bombarded with locals trying to sell umbrellas, sunglasses, aloe – you name it, they were selling it!

If you plan to stay at LubD, they have events and pool parties almost every day. Grab yourself a “Thai Bucket” at either the hotel bar or beach bar and make some new friends from around the world!

Day 10: Fly Home

Pack your bags and sadly leave the sparkling ocean behind! The airport will be roughly 45 min – 1 hour north of Patong Beach, so make sure you budget plenty of time to make your flight.

I flew from Phuket to Bangkok before flying home to save a ton of money, but if you would rather have less stress / convenience, Phuket is an international airport.

Bonus Tips:

• I would highly recommend cutting out some time in Bangkok and spend an extra day (or five) on Phi Phi Island. It’s hard to cut out time when you are jet lagged, so I would recommend starting in Phuket / Phi Phi so you can be jet lagged on the beach! 🙂
• We went in March and the weather was perfect with no rain.
• If you can stay longer, do it! The travel time in between destinations is long and brutal. Enjoy each stop as long as possible!

Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi by Bus via Phuket

Taking a combination of the bus and ferry from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi is a popular option. A great advantage is that buses travel during the night. That means you can save a night on accommodation and won’t waste an entire day on travelling.

The easiest way is to book a direct ticket that includes both the bus to the pier as well as the ferry to Koh Phi Phi. If this option is sold out, keep on reading. Later we explain how to book the tickets separately.

Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi by Combined Bus and Ferry

The easiest way to travel this route from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi by bus is to book it together with a ferry ticket. There are two companies offering this combined bus and ferry service: Montanatip and Paradive Travel.

Journey time is around 17 hours 30 minutes — about 14 hours of that is by bus, and that can be quite exhausting. Normally, though, the bus takes a break midway so you can stretch your legs and grab something to eat.

Rates for a combined bus and ferry ticket from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi start from 1,380 THB ($38).

Bus via Phuket options from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi

Booking a combined bus and ferry ticket is pretty easy. However, if you prefer to have more control over your trip, you can also arrange your transfers on your own. For that, you have two route options. And just like the flight, that’s either via Krabi or via Phuket. See the step-by-step guide below.

Separate booking: Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi by Bus & Ferry via Phuket

When taking the Phuket bus route from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi, you take a bus from Bangkok to Phuket Bus Terminal, transfer to a taxi to Rassada Pier, and then take a boat to Koh Phi Phi.

This combined bus and ferry journey takes 13-16.5 hours.

Step 1: Bangkok to Phuket by Bus

This bus ride from Bangkok to Phuket is 12-14.5 hours long. We suggest travelling late in the afternoon or at night so you can sleep along the way. Fares start at 783 THB ($21) for an express bus.

Buses bound for Phuket have two departure points in Bangkok: the Southern Bus Terminal and Mochit Bus Terminal . Both bus stations are about 10 km from Bangkok city centre, around 20-30 minutes by taxi.

In Phuket, there are also two arrival points: Phuket Terminal 2 and  Thalang . Phuket Terminal 2 is closer to Rassada Pier, a 20-minute taxi ride costs about 150 THB ($4.10). From Thalang District, it’s a 35-minute journey to the pier with fares from 335 THB ($9.10).

If your ferry is departing from other ports like Sea Angel, Yamu, Chean Vanich, or Bang Rong Pier, you can also get there by taxi or tuk-tuk from the bus terminal.

Step 2: Phuket to Koh Phi Phi by Ferry

The earliest ferry from Rassada Pier to Koh Phi Phi departs at 08:30 and the latest at 13:45. Make sure to check the schedule before so you don’t miss the last ferry!

Tickets for this ferry from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi start from 380 THB ($10.40). Be sure to book the correct ferry because there are designated piers in Koh Phi Phi. Although most will dock at Tonsai Pier, some dock at Laem Tong Pier.

Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi by Bus via Krabi

When travelling by bus + ferry via Krabi, you take a bus from Bangkok to Krabi Bus Terminal, take a taxi to Klong Jilad Pier, and catch a boat to Koh Phi Phi.

Total travel time takes around 13 hours.

Step 1: Bangkok to Krabi by Bus

The bus journey from Bangkok to Krabi takes about 11 hours. There are a few companies operating on this route. All travel overnight. Bus fares start from 822 THB ($22).

All buses depart from Bangkok’s Southern Terminal , 10 km northwest of Khao San Road and about 20 minutes by taxi.

The arrival point is at Krabi Bus Terminal . From here, you can take a 20-minute taxi to the nearest port, Klong Jilad Pier.

Step 2: Krabi to Koh Phi Phi by Ferry

If your bus arrives on time, you will be in Krabi early in the morning. That means you’ll have some time to have breakfast and maybe even walk around. The earliest ferry from Klong Jilad Pier to Koh Phi Phi does not depart until 09:00.

The ferry ride takes about 2 hours and ticket prices start from 405 THB ($11.10).

Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi by Flight via Phuket

The fastest way to get to the stunning islands of Koh Phi Phi from Bangkok is by flight. To do this, you have two ways: via Krabi or via Phuket. Both routes are good options. And you can also consider staying for a day or two in either Krabi or Phuket.

Taking a flight from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi via Phuket is a little more expensive than flying via Krabi, especially when you’re travelling solo.

Combined fares start from 2,090 THB ($57) — which includes the flight from Bangkok to Phuket, the taxi from Phuket Airport to Rassada Pier and the ferry going to Koh Phi Phi.

TIP: If you decide to travel by plane, please consider including a carbon compensation fee to reduce your impact on the environment.

Step 1: Bangkok to Phuket Airport by Flight

Phuket is a popular destination in the south of Thailand, so you won’t have a problem booking a flight from Bangkok.

There are many airlines offering multiple trips daily. Airfares start from 960 THB ($26) for a flight that takes around 1.5 hours.

Step 2: Phuket Airport to Rassada Pier, Phuket

From Phuket Airport , the best way to get to the pier is by taxi, especially when you’re travelling in a group.

Most ferries to Koh Phi Phi depart from Rassada Pier, but there are also departures from Sea Angel, Yamu, and Bang Rong Piers.

Taxis from Phuket Airport are metered and as long as you get your ride at the official taxi stand, you can expect a fair price going to Rassada Pier. That’s about 750 THB ($20). It’s worth noting, though, that Phuket taxis are quite small — just big enough for two passengers with large pieces of luggage.

If you want a bigger car, consider booking your taxi online through BookAway , with fares from 780 THB ($21) for a 3-seater vehicle.

You can also try hailing a taxi through Grab, which is now allowed to pick up passengers from Phuket Airport, according to Bangkok Post . Grab rates should be cheaper than airport taxi rates.

Alternative: Bus + Taxi from Phuket Airport to Rassada Pier

When travelling solo, a cheaper option is to ride the airport bus to the Phuket Bus Terminal 1 . This costs 120 THB ($3.30) and takes around 1-1.5 hours.

Once at the bus terminal, you can hail a tuk-tuk, taxi, or book a Grab taxi to Rassada Pier. Grab rates start at 95 THB ($2.60) for the 10-minute ride.

If you’re travelling light, there’s also an option to take a motorbike taxi with fares from 80 THB ($2.20) – 100 THB ($2.70).

Step 3: Rassada Pier, Phuket to Koh Phi Phi by Ferry

The ferry ride to Koh Phi Phi takes about 1-2 hours and prices start at 380 THB ($10.40).

You can also opt for a speedboat, which is a bit more expensive but much faster. Although if you are prone to seasickness, the speedboat probably isn’t a good idea. A speedboat ride takes about 1 hour and ticket prices start from 612 THB ($16.70).

Alternative: Combined minivan & ferry from Phuket Airport to Koh Phi Phi

If you want a comfortable ride from Phuket Airport to Koh Phi Phi, you can check on BookAway for a combined ferry and minivan ticket. Some of the companies offering this option are Call Me Taxi Thailand and Seatran Travel and Tour.

Organising the van and ferry trips from Phuket Airport to Koh Phi Phi independently will cost you around 630 THB ($17.20) per person.

Booking combined tickets, on the other hand, will cost at least 920 THB ($25) — more expensive, but also more convenient because you won’t have to worry about the transfers.

Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi by Flight via Krabi

Flying from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi via Krabi is the cheaper option when you’re travelling solo.

You take a flight from Bangkok to Krabi, hop in a minivan from Krabi Airport to Klong Jilad Pier, and then transfer to a ferry going to Koh Phi Phi. The entire journey takes around 3h 10m - 4h 10m.

Step 1: Bangkok to Krabi by Flight

There are a good number of airlines operating daily flights from Bangkok to Krabi. Vietjet Air often offers the cheapest flights, but Air Asia and Bangkok Airways generally offer affordable rates all year round too.

Airfares start from 570 THB ($15.60) but can go as high as 1,200 THB ($33) during the busy season. It’s best to check Skyscanner for the best rates. The earlier you book your flight, the better the chance of securing cheaper fares.

Flight time to Krabi from Bangkok is around 1.5 hours.

Step 2: Krabi Airport to Klong Jilad Pier, Krabi

Most ferries bound for Koh Phi Phi depart from Krabi’s Klong Jilad Pier .

From Krabi Airport, the best way to get to Klong Jilad Pier is riding a minivan, which takes around 40 minutes. You can find one at the airport or you can book one beforehand through BookAway . A minivan ticket costs 170 THB ($4.60).

When travelling in a group, you may be able to save some money by taking a private transfer . Prices start from 540 THB ($14.70) for a car that can fit 9 people.

Step 3: Krabi to Koh Phi Phi by Ferry

There are several boat companies operating the Krabi-Koh Phi Phi route from Klong Jilad Pier. Both ferries and speedboats are available.

Ferries are bigger, slower and cheaper — with fares from 405 THB ($11.10). If you’re not prone to motion sickness and prefer to go fast, a speedboat ticket costs around 920 THB ($25).

Travel time from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi is about 1h-2h with a ferry and 1 hour with a speedboat.

Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi by Train + Ferry

We do not advise travelling from Bangkok to Koh Phi Phi via train because it will be an exhausting journey, which takes around 22 hours. Also, you’ll have to travel to Surat Thani first and will need to arrange numerous transfers on your own.

If, however, you are planning to stay in Surat Thani or want to travel to Koh Samui , Koh Phangan or Koh Tao before going to Koh Phi Phi, then this is an option to consider.

First, you’ll have to travel by train from Bangkok to Surat Thani for about 13 hours. Then, you take the bus from Surat Thani to Phuket Bus Terminal 2, which is about 6 hours. From here, you can take a taxi to Rassada Pier for 30 minutes.

When Palaces and Temples Combine

Set along the waterway of the Chao Phraya River, the Grand Palace is a spectacle to experience. Where once the river was the main source of transport, the palace has an opulent posture set against the lapping water on the riverbanks. Built in the latter half of the 18th century, the palace continues to be a symbol of the king, though it is now used largely for ceremonial purposes. Within the palace complex are sensational temples that house some of the most well-preserved and coveted Buddhist artifacts, including Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

The structure is raised on a series of platforms, giving height and grandeur to the golden building. The balcony walls are decorated with sensational murals telling the story of the Ramayana, epic in its entirety. The statues that guard the temple are over 15 feet tall, each an ornately carved and. The spicy aroma of incense surrounds the interior. The Buddha is spotlighted, giving him green glow beneath golden robes. His cloaks are changed seasonally by the king in a ritual that brings good fortune to Thailand. There is peacefulness within the temple, filled with the quiet of visitors and the awe of pilgrims that makes a visit worthwhile.

Tree Roots and Temples

After breakfast you will venture outside of the metropolis to the fabulous city of Ayutthaya, the once storied capital of Siam. The history of the city spans over four-centuries, all writ in the remains of the fabulous temples that continue to tower over bits of the city and the jungle commanding respect and reverence amongst all visitors. Wat Mahathat is over 600 years old and was once the home to the Supreme Patriarch leader of the Thai Buddhist monks. The manicured grass gives a manufactured structure to the sandstone, where the colors of the ruins shift from white to deep brown stone and back again. The Temple of the Great Relics, as it is called in English, continues to inspire with the elegance of its remains.

A Buddha sculpture proudly sits on a platform, legs crossed, and hands placed by his knees. A large swath of yellow cloth is draped across his body as he is forever poised in the moment of enlightenment. A large tree has its roots dangling and tangling out of the ground; it looks as though the tree’s trunk is made of a collection of vines. Look deeper within the tangle and you can see the famed Buddha Head hidden within the niches of the tree. No one is certain how the head became wrapped up in the vines but, as Buddha’s slight smile peers at you from within the dangling roots, there is an ease to the moment, where the sun dimmer, the shade feels cooler, and the world offers you a moment to take a deep breath. You will return to Bangkok in the late afternoon with the calm and wonder of Ayutthaya echoing in your thoughts.

Explore Kanchanaburi and Famous Bridge of River Kwai

The early morning brings with it the lusciousness of creamy coconut and fresh squeezed orange juice. After breakfast you will once again venture outside of Bangkok to the riverside town of Kanchanaburi, known as the filming location for the movie, The Bridge on the River Kwai . The bridge was built by prisoners of war during World War II, overseen by the Japanese, and meant to stretch 250 miles from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat, Burma.  The Thailand-Burma Railway Museum is an interactive museum filled with photos and first hand accounts from actual POWs during the war. The interior of the museum is immaculate, with black and white photos documenting the tracks, the officers in charge, and the conditions of the camp. Follow your guide out of the museum and onto a stretch of tracks that hug the mountainside. The air is warm and scented with granite and steel. You can walk along a short stretch of the railway, where the tracks are clear, and the experience of walking through the modern history sends tingles down your spine. Back in town you will be able to step onto the actual bridge depicted in the movie, overlooking the Mekong River, where the gentle trickle of the water settles the history.

City Bustle to Island Splendor

Today you will venture away from the metropolis of Bangkok and transfer to the stunning island of Phuket. Off of the western shores of the mainland are the sensationally clear waters of Phuket, where history adds elegance to the island paradise. Old Phuket Town stands like a beacon of a colonial past where cultures and beauty decorate the shores, from Portuguese mansions to Chinese tradition. There is an essence of classic architecture beneath the rise of palm trees and within the calm rush of waves on the immaculate beach. No matter where you are on Phuket you are never far from majesty, whether next to the cool, clear ocean, within the hills by the Big Buddha, or strolling through Old Town between the tailors and candy shops, art galleries and Chinese noodle shops.

Island Allure

The grandeur of the island is yours to explore today at your whim and pleasure. The morning sun bounces off of the water with the glint of crystal. For a fantastic view of the entire island you can visit Big Buddha in Chalong, whose white frame towers over Phuket on the island’s highest summit. The large image rises over Nakkerd Hill, standing over 135 feet tall, and is considered a welcome sign for those out to sea.  The sweeping vistas of Phuket offer an overwhelming panorama of Phuket Town, where the Portuguese mansions shine beneath the trees, the ocean waves are vibrant and lively throughout the island, and the distinctive reach of jungle mixes with the sapphire horizon.

In the afternoon you can venture to Wat Chalong, where Poh Than Jao Wat, one of the most important Buddhist statues in Phuket, is housed. In the most westerly hall of the temple you can find two statues of old men, representations of an old local who continued to win lotteries after being blessed by the Poh Than Jao Wat statue. The Grand Pagoda dominates the temple, decorated with wall paintings that depict the Buddha’s life story. The air is breezy and cool and the temple is famed for housing a splinter of Buddha’s bone. There is an ease and softness to the temple giving you a pleasant urge to continue to the water and watch the quiet reaches of the sunset.

Famed Waters and Illustrious Landscapes

Today you will embark on a journey away from the luster of Phuket that will take you to the diverse and alluring waters of the Phi Phi Islands. Climb aboard a speedboat to begin your exceptional day where six islands comprise the archipelago only 45 minutes away. The wind whips through your hair as the mist sprays against your cheeks. The water is three shades of blue, ranging from nearly clear to sapphire, sitting beneath the rising green of the jungle island. With many shores to visit, you first step along the sands of Monkey Beach where the primates hide within the trees and lurk within the branches. Koh Phi Phi is an island between Krabi and Phuket in the Andaman Sea, famed for its crystal clear water. It has a bit of a reputation for being a party island with backpackers, but there’s also a quieter, serene side. Whether you are looking for a quick itinerary to see the best of Koh Phi Phi on a budget or want to find barefoot luxury, here’s a guide for you.

Getting to Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi is a popular island and there are plenty of ferry services from other top destinations such as Phuket, Railay, Ao Nang (both are in Krabi), and nearby islands like Koh Yang Noi. your hostel should be able to arrange a transfer for you.

Koh phi phi to krabi

I departed to Koh Phi Phi f rom Ao Nang and booked a fast speed ferry online. I called the tour company who arranged for me to be picked up to the pier and got on the speedboat at the scheduled time. This took about 2-3 hours.

An overview of Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi consists of two islands: Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Lei. The latter is where Maya Bay, the filming location for the Beach, is, but it’s not inhabited. Koh Phi Phi Don is where everyone will stay and can be roughly split into Tonsai Main Town and the Laem Tong Beach area.

Tonsai is where most of the restaurants and all of the hostels in Koh Phi Phi are. It’s more noisy but central. Laemtong is about 30-40 minutes walk from Tonsai to the north with only a handful of hotels and resorts.

Koh Phi Phi beach

When on a tropical island, spending as much time on the beach as possible is the goals of many people. Koh Phi Phi definitely has some great beaches given that it’s not very big. Here are the ones you can reach on foot:

Note: you have to swim inside designated areas inside safety nets as longtail boats come in and out of beaches all the time.

Loh Dalum Beach

On the other side of Tonsai from the pier, Loh Dalum Beach is literally minutes’ walk from Tonsai. It has less boat traffic with plenty of space for sunbathers, with trees for shades by edge. But it does have a fair bit of foot traffic and various kayak rental vendors.

Viking Beach

Head east from Tonsai and you’ll find yourself meandering through resorts towards a quieter side of Koh Phi Phi.

Viking Beach is not a big stretch, but definitely relatively secluded but much smaller. But some don’t have a designated swimming area so be careful.

Rated one of the best beaches on Koh Phi Phi, Long Beach is on the southeastern end of Koh Phi Phi Long with a great view of Koh Phi Phi Lei. It’s about another 15-20 minutes further from Viking Beach. There is a steeper descent to the beach, so make sure you have footwear on (flip flops are fine).

It’s a fairly long beach with a few restaurants and hotels running along it with the famed snorkeling spot Shark Point at the end. However, there is no snorkeling gear rental here and the short distance to Shark Point is also frequented by longtail boats. I won’t recommend veering outside the swimming areas there.

Laemtong Beach

To the north of Tonsai, Laemtong Beach fronts only a few hotels and resorts. It’s not as long as Long Beach or as wide, with most hotels occupying the stretch in front of it. But it is the quietest of all the beaches as some hotels have their loungers set back from the sand.

Koh Phi Phi tours

The best way to see Koh Phi Phi is to join a boat tour, since walking doesn’t get you anywhere. It can be easily booked with your hostel or online. There isn’t a big price difference so if you want to save cash, booking online is a good option. Most of the tour just gets you to meet at the McDonalds by the main pier which is walking distance for all around Tonsai.

If you are not staying by Tonsai, then it’s best to book with your hotel/hostel/nearest tour operators as boats depart from all over the island. In general, there are 3 types of tours you can do: morning, afternoon, or full day. I ended up on an afternoon tour because of the time + money, but here’s an overview:

Afternoon tour

Booked for 500 Baht through my hostel, the afternoon tour is perfect if you worry you might get a sunburn and don’t want to spend all day in the sea. We were on the east side of islands for the most part which shielded us from the sun. The tour sets off at 2pm but it ended up being more like 2:20 as they collected different groups from different locations. While I didn’t like the staff on the boat, there’s nothing else to fault for 500 baht. Here’s where we went:

Monkey Beach

On the southwestern peninsular of Koh Phi Phi Don, Monkey Beach is known for, you guessed it, its monkeys. It was the first stop but we didn’t see any monkey and ended up looping back – but I had to say I was very put off by the tourists feeding monkeys and there’s no one there to stop them.

Viking cave

Named after the cave painting of various boats inside, you can’t set foot in the cave as it is a protected area with many swallows nesting there. The cave is on the eastern side of Koh Phi Phi Lei, and we stopped nearby to snorkel and the sea was teeming with life. We spent about an hour here before setting off.

We were given a small box of average vegetable fried rice for a quick snack before moving onto the next spot.

Phileh Lagoon

A sandy bottom lagoon on the eastern side of Koh Phi Phi Leh, it’s a beautiful lagoon but even in the afternoon there are many longtail boats going in and out. We also stopped here for a while but caution is needed if you are to swim around. In comparison to the Viking Cave, there’s not as much sea life here.

Loh Samah Bay

Another gorgeous Koh Phi Phi Lei spot, Loh Samah Bay is actually my favourite spot. We stopped at the mouth of the narrow bay where we could go snorkeling and or swim up to the beach.

Our guide said that there’s a possibility of seeing sharks on the other side, the water is a bit cloudy but I swam up to the beach and it was beautiful. The blue is a little different than the other blue, more clear powdered blue than teal.

Next up is the famed Maya Bay. It is still closed for preservation (March 2020) but we can still see the bay from afar. I personally don’t think it’s that pretty in comparison with the previous two locales. You can actually get reasonably close and we stopped for snorkelling in the small bay across from it. But the water was not clear and the water was quite deep to see much.

Sunset point

I didn’t hold much hope for the sunset point but I was wrong. A smattering of boats gathered in the strait between the two Koh Phi Phi islands as the sun set and the sky was on fire. It’s a little hard to get a timelapse as the boat drifts around, but photos are easy.

Bioluminescent plankton

We were faced with a choice to either go back or stay for around 45 minutes to see bioluminescent plankton. I was the only person on my boat who opted to stay and I hopped over to the neighbouring one to wait. As soon as it got dark, we were able to don our snorkel on and dive in. You can’t really film or photographed it and they are ‘activated’ by moving the water. A girl splashed water up and created a wave of sparkling lights that would imprint on my memory, even if the camera can’t capture it.

We were finally back by 7:45-8 to the pier, so this tour does run late.

Full day tour

The full day tour includes everything from the afternoon tour. But in the morning, it also visits two more offshore islands: Bamboo Island and Mosquito Island northeast of Koh Phi Phi Don, as well as the Long beach and Shark Point, too.

Morning tour

The other tour I considered is the early bird tour special that starts at 6:30 and lasts until 14:30. It costs 1500 and you see everything without the crowds, but no plankton since you’ll be back in the afternoon. There is a regular morning tour that does the same route as the afternoon tour for cheaper, but that also coincides with the timing of everyone who is on a tour from Phuket and Krabi.

Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint

I must admit that I stayed one night at Tonsai to go up to the Koh Phi Phi Viewpoints. There are three on the maps, but actually only 1 and 2 are distinct as the third one is a cafe behind viewpoint 2.

First, you have to follow the signs and go up steep stairs and pass a guest house to the first viewpoint. The ticket office is right by the gate and costs 30 baht to go up.

Viewpoint 1 has many decorative lawn things like giant coconuts and your quintessential giant letters proclaiming what it is. It’s not my thing so I made my way quickly up.

Viewpoint 2 is higher and along a flatter but uphill. I recommend going in early morning or for sunset to avoid the hottest part of the day; though sunset will probably be crowded.

Instead of the platform, I find the giant boulders a much better background for photos.

Where to eat on Koh Phi Phi

As an island, prices are higher than other places on Koh Phi Phi. If you are staying in Tonsai, here are some good places to eat:

Pa-Noi Thai Food

A popular restaurant in the central market of Tonsai, it serves up cheap and good Thai food. It’s a safe choice for a budget dining option in Koh Phi Phi.

I had a simple thai basil fried minced meat with rice and it was good value for money with a big portion size.

Hello My Mom

For an even cheaper option, this quirkily named hole-in-the-wall restaurant is along one of the main streets in Tonsai.

A simple dish is only 60 baht so I ordered a fresh juice shake as well. Interestingly, it was made across the street.

Koh Phi Phi hostels and hotels

Budget: I stayed at the Pier 519 Hostel which is two turns from the main pier that everyone arrived at. They have several huge dorm rooms. It’s reasonably clean but still sandy, good for one night or two if you have limited time. Do note that the showers are outdoor on the balcony and it is a bit stuffy with so many people.

If you are two people, P2 Wood Loft is a great clean and budget stay but perhaps not as social a space.

Mid-range: Paradise Resort Phi Phi is a great mid-range resort by Long Beach. If you don’t want to be so far from Tonsai,  JJ Bungalow is a good choice.

Zeavola Resort Koh Phi Phi

Splurge: If you want to be by the main town but also has a pool to dive in and rustic charm, Phi Phi CoCo Beach Resort is perfect. I also stayed at Zeavola Resort on Laemtong Beach which is the best barefoot luxury with a slice of eco-friendliness. If you want to be by Long Beach,

How to Get in and around Phi Phi Island

The Phi Phi Islands are located 740 km south of Bangkok between the large island of Phuket and the Straits of Malacca in Thailand's Andaman Sea.

The islands are officially part of Krabi Province, and you can access Phi Phi easily from either Phuket or Krabi. Phi Phi Don is the only island in the group and is where the accommodation is. It's a small island and easy to navigate on foot, by boat or by bicycle.

In this article, we will detail your options for transportation so that you know how to get in and around the Phi Phi islands.

Get to Phi Phi Island by Boat - the Only Way

Getting to Phi Phi Island is pretty straightforward. The distance from the islands is around 46km from Phuket and around the same distance from Krabi.

To get to Phi Phi, you have two options; taking a ferry or a speedboat. The ferry is the most popular choice by far for tourists to reach the Phi Phi islands.

A ferry ride takes two hours from Phuket and around 90 minutes from Krabi. To get good seats in the high season, we advise you to arrive well in advance. In low season, arriving half an hour before departure is usually fine.

Ferry to Phi Phi

Ferries are the most comfortable and safest option. Tourists use the top deck of the ferry as a sundeck, which is perfect for those looking to top up their tans.

The lower floor has air-conditioned rooms and a small shop selling food, snacks, and cold beers and soft drinks. You could spend a little more on a VIP ticket, which gets you a more comfortable air-conditioned spot on the middle-deck.

The ferries can get extremely crowded during high season, which is something to consider when making your choice.

Speedboat to Phi Phi

A speedboat transfer is the second option for getting to Phi Phi. You have the choice of taking a private or scheduled boat, and both take under an hour.

The speedboat is more expensive than the ferry, but you do save a lot of time as the journey only takes around 45 minutes to an hour.

If you are travelling in a large group, splitting the cost of a private speedboat can represent excellent value. With a private boat, you can also get dropped straight to your chosen hotel, which will save you even more time.

Bangkok to Phi Phi Island

If you are travelling from Bangkok, you need to get to one of the piers mentioned above - either at Phuket or Krabi to catch the ferry or speedboat to Phi Phi.

There are no trains to Phuket or Krabi, and a bus or minivan from Bangkok takes around 12 hours to reach either city. With that being said, the recommended way to get to Phuket or Krabi is to fly.

After arriving at the airport, you can take a taxi or a local bus to get to the ferry terminal. There are dozens of flights daily from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports in Bangkok to both Phuket and Krabi.

With so much competition between airlines, you can usually get an excellent deal on a flight to either city from Bangkok.

Phuket to Phi Phi Island

The main departure/arrival port in Phuket is called Rassada, located near Phuket Town, at the far south of the island. It is a 90-minute journey by private transfer or taxi from the airport in Phuket and Krabi.

Another option in the local buses or minivan from outside Phuket airport, but these options can take a lot longer and are not always the most comfortable way to travel. Krabi to Phi Phi Island

Although Phi Phi falls under the Krabi administration, there's not much difference in distance between Phi Phi and Krabi compared with Phi Phi and Phuket.

Departing from Krabi does save time, however, as the ferry port in Krabi is closer to the airport than the ferry terminal in Phuket is. Krabi's main ferry pier is at Klong Jilad, which is situated just south of Krabi Town.

The journey from Krabi airport to the dock takes around half an hour by private transfer or taxi, making these options the fastest and most convenient. Travel by bus is cheaper but can take up to an hour and a half depending on the number of stops they make along the way.

Koh Samui to Phi Phi Island

Given the fact that The Phi Phi islands are located in the Andaman Sea, on the opposite coast from the Gulf of Thailand, a combined trip is required.

There are a couple of options for you depending on your situation. Flying is the quickest and most comfortable, but if you don't want to fly, you can take a minivan or private transfer and boat combination to get to the island. Let's go through your options:

Flying to Koh Phi Phi: Bangkok Airways are the only airline that flies directly between Koh Samui and Phuket/Krabi, and this is by far the most convenient way of reaching Phi Phi. Thai Airways also runs daily flights, but they require a transfer in Bangkok, which at least doubles the journey time.

Overland Travel And Boat Combo From Koh Samui, you will need to take the ferry to Don Sak Pier in Surat Thani. From here you can either take a minivan, taxi or private transfer with an English speaking guide:

Private transfer (recommended): The benefit of this method is that it's comfortable, reliable, and you can stop whenever you want to use the bathroom or get refreshments.

Taxis (less recommended): Taxis are a good option. They are easy to find at Surat Thani Airport airport and a reliable choice for getting to Krabi. The only downside is that the airport is the only place you can legally get a taxi, so prices will be much higher than in other parts of Thailand. There are no meter taxis from Surat Thani Airport, so you can expect to pay in the region of 3000 - 4000 baht for the journey.

Minivan (not recommended): Although there is a minibus option to provide a cheap transfer from the airport to town, they are not always the safest or most comfortable way to travel. We only recommend using a minivan if you are on a tight budget. You can combine any of the above options with a ferry or speedboat ride, depending on your personal preference.

Chiang Mai to Phi Phi Island

From Chiang Mia to Krabi is too far a journey to do by bus or minivan, it's just not practical as it would take you a whole day of travel. The best option is to take a direct flight from Chiang Mai to Phuket or Krabi and use one of the recommended options above to reach the ferry terminal.

One of the best ways to get around Phi Phi is to rent a traditional longtail boat with a driver. The cost is around 3000 baht, and you can comfortably fit up to 8 people on the boat.

Not only can you explore different parts of the island, but you'll get the chance to visit places like Bamboo Island, Monkey Bay, Mosquito Island, and Maya Bay, with excellent snorkelling opportunities along the way.

There are also longtail 'taxi' boats that will take you anywhere on the island for a fee. However, if you plan on making a few trips, and you are in a group, private boat rental can actually end up being the cheaper option.

Although Phi Phi Don is a large-ish island, the inhabited parts are not. Walking is a great way to see a lot of the island. You can stroll around the main town to do some shopping and grab a bite to eat and at one of the many restaurants and bars in the town.

From there, you can head to the island's remote east coast beaches or perhaps take a hike up to the magnificent viewpoint. A walk around the whole island should take a maximum of 2 hours.

One of the most popular (and cheapest) ways to get around Koh Phi Phi is on a kayak. Most of the resorts on the island are happy to organise a trip for you, and a kayak costs around 500 baht a day for a single person kayak and 700 Baht per day for a double.

You can also hire them for 200 baht an hour if you prefer to take a short trip. It's a great way to explore the island at your own pace, and you get the opportunity to get into all the little nooks and crannies like small caves that the boats can't get to.

Bicycles are not very common on Phi Phi Island, but they can be found. You can hire bikes at a few of the hotels and resorts in the main town. You are limited to where you can ride in Phi Phi as there aren't a lot of suitable roads on the island, but cycling can be a great way of getting from your hotel to the town and main beach at Tonsai Bay.

The number of tours hopping around the islands is endless, but it’s all about making sure you head to the right island for you! After all, this is your adventure.

Among the Thai islands, the problem isn’t finding nirvana – it’s deciding which type of paradise you want. We’ve ranked and sorted the best of Thailand’s islands (updated for 2021) , so you’re never at a loss for which one to catch a longtail boat ride to next. You can also skip to your favourite now:

Phuket is an excellent base for exploring the other islands and caters to everything a traveller needs on the trip. The main areas in Phuket are Patong, Kata and Karon, which are very popular with travellers but not the be all and end all of this island.

While you’re there, make sure you take time to visit Nai Harn beach, frequented by locals and expats. The longtail boats can take you on plenty of day trips to surrounding, smaller islands, like the James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan), which appeared in The Man with the Golden Gun , and Koh Hae, which translates to ‘Coral Island.’

• How to get there: One hour flight from Bangkok. 

10. Koh Phi Phi

Most group tours will travel here, and for a good reason – because it’s downright amazing! This Thai island group is widely known for Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Leh, which was used as a filming location for The Beach (starring Leonardo DiCaprio if you’ve not had the pleasure of watching it) and Koh Phi Phi Don, the largest and most populated of the Phi Phi Islands. The others are mainly small and made up of dramatic rock formations jutting out of the ocean with small strips of beach, but that’s where to go for a serene swim in crystal-clear water (we suggest Pileh Lagoon) as opposed to the crowded main islands.

• How to get there: Ferries from Phuket (two hours), Krabi or Koh Lanta (90 minutes). 

For me Phi Phi Don will always be a favourite. I’ve visited a number of times before and after the tsunami and although it’s busier than it once was, it’s the friendliest of the islands I’ve visited and has a real community feel. Plus it’s absolutely beautiful! Get away from the crowds by catching a longboat to some of the more isolated bays – Viking Beach, Lana Bay and Nui Beach are my faves. 9. Koh Pha Ngan

Best for party seekers due to its infamous Full Moon Party (it also has Half Moon and Black Moon Parties) on Haad Rin Beach. They can get crazy, with crowds of up to 30,000 people in peak season, glow sticks, buckets (literal buckets) of alcohol and fire-twirling. Still, the island is more than that, with Bottle Beach as the secluded treat for those who aren’t sleeping off their hangover.

Note: If your tour visits Koh Pha Ngan, double check with the operator to see if your tour lands on the Full Moon Party, as most itineraries are planned around this once in a lifetime event! Besides, it’s just too good to miss! 

• How to get there: One hour flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui, then by a one hour ferry.

8. Koh Samui

Koh Samui is perfect for first-time travellers, families and those looking for a yoga retreat. Generally, it’s more of a manicured island, brimming with clean stretches of white-sand beaches, spas and luxury resorts, although backpackers still arrive in their throngs here, too. If you want to get secluded on Koh Samui, head to the south or west of the island.

• How to get there: One hour flight from Bangkok.

Koh Samui is our favorite island in Thailand; a true slice of paradise, and one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Fine white sand beaches and crystal clear waters come together with nodding coconut trees to one side and the beautiful Gulf of Thailand to the other, and those wanting to dance barefoot under the soft light of the full moon can join one of Koh Samui’s wild nightly beach parties. There are an abundance of natural wonders and man-made attractions, from mummified monks to thundering waterfalls and spectacular Buddhist temples. It has the kind of tropical coastline and beaches you find featured in ads. Instead of staying at crowded Chaweng beach, head to more serene Lamai beach. 7. Similan Islands

Similan Islands Marine National Park – you know it’s going to be a beautiful place when you have to book accommodation to stay here through the government. And even then, you can only stay on two of the islands, Koh Miang and Koh Similan, and it fills up quickly! Otherwise, day trips from Khao Lak are your second best option. Diving is a must, as well as viewing the beach-lined edges of the islands. Whale sharks can be spotted at Richelieu Rock in February to April. Last minute booking, anyone?

• How to get there: From Bangkok, you can get a 12 to 15-hour bus to Khao Lak, you can then take a ferry from Tablamu. Note that the only way to get to the Similan islands is through tour company operated speedboats.

Either before, during or after your tour, you NEED to make time for a visit to Koh Tao, and especially for scuba divers! Koh Tao is well known for incredible scuba diving and because of the competition between the many scuba diving shops, it’s got some of the cheapest PADI courses for those wanting to further their scuba skills. This is the place to go for vibrant coral and coming face to face with sharks, rays and other magnificent wildlife. Beyond scuba diving, the island has a laid-back but grown-up vibe with a satisfying nightlife and jungle to explore.

• How to get there: One hour flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui, then a two-hour ferry.

I’ve been to Koh Tao a couple of times, for very different reasons. The first time I wanted to explore as much of the island as I could. At the time I didn’t want to do diving (which is what Koh Tao is mainly famous for), but I wanted to discover all the different bays and beaches on the island. However, after seeing how much fun everyone was having diving, I decided to come back again and join the crowds! What can I say – there’s a reason why Koh Tao is one of the best places in the world to learn to dive, and I had such an amazing time there! -Macca from A Brit and A Broad

Most easily accessible from Phuket, the Koh Yao islands are the perfect antithesis to the rowdy, party atmosphere, making it a great vacation combination if you’re looking for two wildly different sides of Thailand. The bigger Koh Yao Yai is the less developed island, consisting of beautiful beaches like Hat Lo Pared and Hat Chonglard. On Koh Yao Noi, be sure to check out Hat Pasai and Hat Paradise.

• How to get there: One hour flight from Phuket, then an hour-long ferry or 30-minute speedboat transfer.

4. Koh Lanta

This is one of the best islands for all-around Thai experiences. All travel tastes and budgets are accounted for on Koh Lanta . Lanta Yai is the biggest island (this is another island group, also marine-protected, so you know you’ve got some great snorkelling ahead of you) whose majority of households only gained access to electricity in 1996, representing the chilled, relaxed and culturally rich atmosphere missing from other islands in the area. 

• How to get there: Take a 4-hour ferry from Phuket. Or fly to Krabi airport and take a 2-hour ferry (ferries only operate November to April. Outside of these months, you can get a taxi or minibus service from Krabi Town).

Although I used to live on Koh Tao, which I love, my favourite Thai island is Koh Lanta. It’s a gorgeous mix of Buddhist and Muslim communities which makes for delicious food, as well as a completely different vibe to many of the other islands. It’s super easy to find deserted beaches, and the water is incredible — perfect for diving and snorkelling. – Lucy, Wanderluce

Koh Kut is the Thai island where you come to do nothing. People looking for a pulsing nightlife and hate the quiet, hang your head in shame and turn around; this is not the place for you. Hammock living is a way of life on this palm-lined island, but when you need a break from that (is it possible to relax too much?), snorkelling and kayaking are the water activities you can leisurely pour your time over.

2. Koh Chang

Less on-the-radar than Phuket and Samui, Koh Chang is still considered built up but has resisted in favour of laid-back charm, thanks to its more remote location. Avoid the west coast beaches where tourism is booming more than the island can handle. Instead, head to Had Sai Noi Beach for the boho beach-bar scene, Salakkok Bay for an all too rare traditional fishing village and Ban Salek Phet for mangrove forests.

• How to get there: Fly from Bangkok to Trat Airport, catch a minibus to the pier and take a ferry to Koh Chang.

A more economical way would be to catch the bus from Bangkok to Laem Ngop (which takes between 5 to 6 hours) and then take the ferry.

The diving on Koh Chang is seriously incredible. It’s not as hyped as the other islands like Koh Tao or Koh Phi Phi, which makes it even better because it’s so much quieter! I spent a week there lounging on the beach, hiking through the jungle to amazing waterfalls, and diving through an incredible coral reef network. There’s a night market on each evening and the food is cheap, delicious, and plentiful there. 1. Koh Lipe

Once just a whisper on the Thai island circuit, tourism on Koh Lipe is exploding and potentially (and slightly worryingly) following in the footsteps of Koh Phi Phi. The reason for this is because Koh Lipe offers an undeniable beauty, many consider its beaches to be among the best in Thailand. Get there before it replicates the more tourist-centric islands, and experience the chilled-out reggae bars, crowd-free sunsets and incredible snorkelling.

• How to get there: From Bangkok, fly to Hat Yai, take a shuttle bus to Pak Bara pier, then a ferry to Koh Lipe.

Koh Lipe is nicknamed “The Maldives of Thailand” and after spending 5 weeks in the Maldives ourselves we see why. No other [island] in Thailand has turquoise waters and white sandy beaches like Koh Lipe. There is something magical about waking up in a beach hut just steps to the ocean. Koh Lipe has the best sunsets, we love grabbing a drink at a beach bar on Sunset Beach and watching the free show. During the day rent a private long tail boat for $45 and explore the nearby islands, which are equally as gorgeous as Koh Lipe. Hello, how do I get to phi phi island without my kids getting sick (one in particular is prone to sea sickness). We are traveling next month. Speed boat doesn’t sound like the way to go! Can anyone recommend a tour company? Thank you

You're travelling on water and the sea always have waves. We went into the rainy season and sometimes have gusty winds. The sea has higher waves than in the dry season, i.e. December to February. Give your kids motion sickness pills or stay ashore. You have to be aware, it might be nice weather when you start the trip and it may turn worse all of a sudden. Specifically during this time of the year.

Keep in mind that not even ferries are immune from rocking & rolling when the wind/swell is in play but will certainly be a better, more stable option than speedboat for those who suffer from sea sickness.

Bottom line, bring anti-nausea meds and ginger candies if you want to go to Koh Phi Phi. There is no method that avoids the risk of sea sickness. And spend time outside on deck, so your kids can see the stable horizon, not watch the rocking view out a window.
