Unique Off-Train Experiences on the Indian Pacific

15/08/2016 by Amanda

A holiday like no other – I enjoy a unique taste of Australia as I ride the iconic Indian Pacific train from one edge of the continent to the other.

indian pacific

At nearly 4,000 kilometres across, Australia truly is a wide brown land, and a couple of weeks back The Bloke and I were privileged to ride across it as guests of Great Southern Rail on the iconic Indian Pacific . Taking this trip has ticked a big item off my bucket list and the experience was every bit as splendid as I’d hoped for. The accommodation is comfortable, the food and drink is of exceptional quality and the staff are as much a part of the experience as the journey itself, but more about all that in a later post.

For now I want to share with you the daily off-train experiences which break up what could be a slightly tedious three-day journey and which show off some of the remarkable features of our collective home.

Guitarist on the platform, indian pacific

We boarded the Indian Pacific in Sydney on a Wednesday and, after a friendly, welcoming get-together on the platform, the train took off, gently rolling up through the gloriously lush Blue Mountains and headed for the first stop – Broken Hill. The train arrives at Broken Hill just after 6.00am and those who care to are up, dressed, caffeinated and ready to board excursion buses that will take us to either an exhibition of the region’s favourite son at the Pro Hart Gallery or the deeply moving Line of Lode Miners Memorial and Visitors Centre.

As featured in the hit movie “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, the historic Palace Hotel.

We opted to visit the latter, a striking and unique site which sits on top of a mullock heap and commands exceptional views of the town which the industry fathered. The memorial includes a list of more than 800 miners who lost their lives on the job. Each loss is commemorated with the name, age and cause of death of the individual. The youngest among these is a 12 year old boy – a sobering reminder of why the city embraced trade unionism to protect it’s workers. After enjoying a resuscitating cuppa and snack in the Visitors Centre café, we had a brief tour of the slowly waking town, before boarding our ride again and heading straight for the breakfast table.

With nothing to do but relax, the day passed lazily, with the train rolling through South Australia, past Peterborough, which was once one of the busiest railway stations in the country with over 100 trains pausing there every day. We ride on past the green winter slopes of the Southern Flinders Ranges and shortly after lunch pull up at our next stop at Two Wells, where some of us again board a bus. And again, there is a choice of excursions, with some passengers staying on the train until Adelaide where they will disembark for a walking tour of the city.

The Indian Pacific under lowering South Australian skies at Two Wells. Long much?

This time we are bound for a region more familiar to me – Seppeltsfield Winery and Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop in the Barossa Valley. At Seppeltsfield we are taken through the historic barrel hall on the way to the private trophy cellar – a spot the general public rarely has access to. Here we learn about their prize – the oldest continual port collection in the world, an unbroken collection that dates from 1878. Guests are offered tastings of some of the premium fortified wines and it is possible to purchase tastings of your birth-year vintage. We go from there upstairs to the newly refurbished tasting cellars and have a wander through the Jam Factory, home to various crafts-persons, before boarding the bus again.

Our next stop is the look-out at Menglers Hill, which usually offers a magnificent view of the Barossa Valley but was shrouded in fog and rain on the day of our visit, then on to another South Australian icon – Maggie Beer’s Farm.

Greeted with wine and delicious nibbles made from Maggie’s and other local produce, we settle in for a cooking demonstration in one of the most famous kitchens in the country. Maggie is not cooking today, but her stand-in does a fine job of showing us how to use one of their best known products – Verjuice – before ushering us into their on-site function centre for a generous three course dinner, served with premium Barossa wines.

With no break in our travel planned until later in the day, I finally get to curl up in a corner of our cabin and alternate reading with gazing out at the challenging desert landscape – wondering what on earth possessed those pioneers to head out there in the first place.

indian pacific - Cook.

Bustling Cook.

indian pacific, Cook school

After lunch we make a brief stop at Cook, once a remote railway town with a small, but active population, a school and a hospital. These days it is a ghost town with a permanent population of four, whose job it is to service the trains that pass through.

Cook, queen city of the Nullarbor?!

Five or so hours further along the longest straight stretch of railway in the world the Indian Pacific comes to a stop at Rawlinna Station railway siding – the largest sheep station in Australia at around 8,000 square kilometres. Here we disembark for what must be the most extraordinary and exclusive remote-region experience anywhere in the world.

dinner under the stars, Rawlinna Indian Pacific

The passengers alight from the train onto the sandy soil of the western edge of the Nullarbor, under the inky desert night sky. Next to the tracks the trees have been dressed in fairy lights, fire pits glow, long tables have been set up with hurricane lamps and a performer stands off to one side strumming his guitar and singing Aussie favourites. Great Southern Rail staff offer us drinks and escort us to seats, before serving the tables with huge, generous share platters of barbecued lamb, pork, roasted vegetables and all the necessary condiments.

Indian Pacific staff setting up Rawlinna

It’s not long before we are all alternating between eating the delicious food and singing along and, just when we decide we can’t eat another thing, the depleted platters are exchanged for steaming chocolate puddings for dessert. Wine flows like, well – wine, the congenial party atmosphere has plastered every single face with a wide, beaming smile and I can’t help but be grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a wonderful adventure.

Indian Pacific dinner in the desert

Eventually we all pile back on the train to head into the night through to the western edge of Australia. With these experiences, the Indian Pacific offers guests a unique glimpse of our great southern land. One that will send the internationals on board away with great stories to tell about this huge continent and which will have locals glowing with a more intimate insight of our home.

I’ve got friends that absolutely love train travel and I think they’ve taken this journey. I haven’t actually had many long train trips though myself. I tend to be more fascinated by planes than trains.

Which is better, the Indian Pacific or the Ghan?

The Indian Pacific is a better train than the Ghan because it is a transcontinental trip that will take you from the Pacific Ocean on the Eastern coast, to the Indian Ocean on the Western Coast. However, if you would like to see the country from North to South, the Ghan is as equally grand and opulent.

What is the dress code on the Indian Pacific?

There is no dress code aboard the Indian Pacific. However, you may want to pack warm comfortable clothes as the air conditioning can get cool. Likewise, you need to pack a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for your outdoor excursions in which you will be participating.

A Once in a Lifetime Experience on the Indian Pacific Rail Journey

A Once in a Lifetime Experience on the Indian Pacific Rail Journey

It is not often that you get to travel from the Indian Ocean in Western Australia, straight across this vast continent of Australia to the Pacific Ocean in Sydney, but that is what we experienced on this epic Indian Pacific rail journey.  This is one of the world’s Great Train Journeys around the world that you can experience , and you just must add it to your list of things to achieve.

Indian Pacific

One of the most convenient ways to experience the world is by train, and Rail Plus offers Great Train Journeys in many countries, like Canada, Americas, China/Russia/Asia, Africa, Europe/UK, India, Middle East, New Zealand and of course Australia. To see if this style of travel suits you, why not experience a train trip in Australia. We can tell you it is a very convenient and enjoyable way to see many places, and that after our trip on the Indian Pacific we certainly are considering another.

Perhaps the  Maharajas’ Express , a luxury train in India, offering 5 fascinating journeys crisscrossing some of India’s most vibrant destinations. Or then again, we have always wanted to experience the Rocky Mountains of Canada and what better way then by a Great Train Journey. The penultimate would be the  Trans-Siberian Express onboard The Golden Eagle

One of the Great Train Journeys, the Indian Pacific, Australia

The train also goes from Sydney to Perth but is still called the Indian Pacific. Go Figure. It is offered by Rail Plus, who also do The Ghan which traverses from Adelaide to Darwin, and vice versa; another Great Train Journey, and The Overlander which runs between the two cities of Melbourne and Adelaide. For a top recommendation of where to stay before your epic train trip, we recommend Sebel East Perth , which we will chat about later … a hidden gem.

The Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Indian Pacific

This transcontinental train journey is totally unique, as you cross some of the most remote areas in the world, including the Nullarbor Plains,  Australia’s quintessential Outback for example, towards the mining towns of Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill, to the breathtaking Blue Mountains of NSW, and through landscapes, as varied as they are interesting.

It is hard to fathom the 4,352km or 2704-mile train trip taking three nights, and four days, and even we, as Australians, realising just how damn big, diverse and intriguing our country is.

This is an all-inclusive train journey meaning your food, drinks, off train excursions are all covered with your initial fare. Once you get on the Indian Pacific, you do not worry about anything as the staff are amazing at taking care of all your needs. It really is the penultimate once in a lifetime experience to traverse the continent of Australia in totally luxury, and to experience exactly how distinctive Australia is as a country and a continent.

Indian Pacific

An experience like no other

I cannot imagine a better way for local and international travellers to experience our country. It confounded me. Suddenly I was in the thriving city of Perth in Western Australia, and then I was in the middle of the outback of Australia; witnessing and experiencing places like the Nullarbor Plains, meaning nullus, “no”, and arbor, “tree” – ergo, no trees, and as flat as the eye can see.  This was and is one of those Great Train Journey’s that no-one should miss.

Indian Pacific

The train driver did tell us a that a feral herd of camels were on the line early in the morning, and he did have to do some light shining to move them on. Did you know that there are more camels in Australia than other country in the world ? This is something I did know, but still, find so interesting. Who would have thought Australia had more camels than Middle Eastern countries?

“From the 1840s until the early 1900s, camels were imported into Australia principally for transportation purposes in the country’s hot, arid deserts. (sic) “Camels in Australia are feral, not wild. Feral animals are domesticated animals living in the wild after escaping domestication or captivity” so know you know, the most camels in the world were in Australia. There has to be something in that for all of us.

History of the Indian Pacific

As the different colonies in Australia were headed towards Federation at the end of the 19th century, Western Australia was persuaded to join this new nation by promise of a transcontinental railway linking this isolated western region with the rest of the eastern colonies.

Indian Pacific

It was not until 1969 that an uninterrupted rail link from the Indian Ocean in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east existed. The newly-named Indian Pacific train embarked on its inaugural transcontinental journey on 23 February 1970, arriving in Perth to a crowd of more than 10,000 well-wishers.

Life on board to Indian Pacific, the Great Train Journey

As previously mentioned, once you are on board you have nothing else to worry about, it is all inclusive. There are two categories of cabins, Platinum, and Gold – Platinum being slightly larger than Gold where we were.  It depends on which price point you choose to make this journey.

Indian Pacific

What we all got was A+ attention . The Indian Pacific train trip prides itself on service, and they win in this area. Nothing is too much trouble for them to know you. From early door knock wake ups (should you choose), to knowing the wine you want at the bar, to the open and very friendly lounge areas where you just get to know other guests, because it is a convivial environment, to the Bloody Mary at breakfast, just because you can …. to not leaving you in Cook, the town with a population of 4, and in the middle of freaking nowhere, the staff are all over caring for you.

PS. Thank you for not leaving me in Cook; I am such an urban chick.

What’s the food like on the Indian Pacific train trip?

Indian Pacific

As to be expected on a luxury train trip, you have nothing to complain about with the food and the drinks. We had off train excursions daily, which were so interesting, but we spent a lot of time eating, drinking, sleeping, chatting and it all worked well. All palates were well catered for, right down to camel tagine and other local produce, should you really want to get your outback experience complete.

Entertainment on board

On board entertainment, and in fact at the exits and returns from off train excursions, always had some music from the young man on the train, employed to entertain us. It worked well. It gave that ‘I’m in the Australian bush” type of experience. Most of the entertainment in reality, is with mixing with other people.

Off Train Excursions on the Indian Pacific

The wild wild west of kalgoorlie, western australia.

Indian Pacific

The Indian Pacific train trip was broken up by Off Train Excursions. The first was Kalgoorlie, an old gold mining town renowned for pubs, brothels and general mayhem . This was a place I was excited to visit. Unfortunately, as we arrived late at night, and were escorted, we were treated to a sanitized, yet dramatic rendition of the history of this very enigmatic wild west town . We did, however, get to see the massive machinery that this mining town is renowned for. They do it big in Kalgoorlie.

Rawlinna, Western Australia

Indian Pacific

Described as a “little outpost on the Nullarbor Plain,” there really is little here.   On the trip from Sydney to Perth, you stop at Rawlinna, Western Australia for dinner under the magnificent stars of the great Southern lights. For us coming from Perth to Sydney, we stopped at 6.30am to be feted by clear skies, crisp weather, bacon and egg sliders, vegemite scrolls, Aussie music … and you know what? It worked beautifully. What can be more iconic than the Australian outback than this? Definitely fond memories for me.

Indian Pacific

Cook, South Australia

Indian Pacific

Ok, we crossed the border during the night from the vast state of Western Australia to South Australia and the little town of Cook, population 4, where I lived in dread of being left behind, though undoubtedly the locals would have cared for me.

The local swimming pool looks more like a garden, yet this was once a thriving railway community, which had a sense of humour. Once this was the only hospital  for hundreds of miles, hence their sign   “If you’re crook, come to Cook”; “our hospital needs your help, Get sick.” Now the Outback relies on the  Royal Flying Doctor Service of Outback Australia.  The train did not abandon me …because the Indian Pacific are like to fairy godmothers to all passengers.

Indian Pacific

Next stop … Adelaide

Indian Pacific

As the capital city of the state of South Australia, there is a lot that is appealing about Adelaide, not mentioning the fact that is that gateway to the wine growing areas of the Barossa and Clare Valleys. Here we had choices. Cricket tragics could go the Adelaide Oval, others went some other places, and we went on the Central Adelaide Food Markets tour, because food rules. South Australia is well known as a food and wine destination, and with good reason. It was not our first time here but experiencing it with a local guide makes everything more enjoyable. We ate, we ate, we ate …. and we ate some more. What an enjoyable experience in Adelaide.

Indian Pacific

Broken Hill, NSW …Broken Heel

Indian Pacific

Yes, we covered some ground on this trip. To date, we had been in Western Australia, South Australia and back to our state of New South Wales, and to Broken Hill, a frontier mining town in the far far west of New South Wales, in the Australian outback. I had been to Broken Hill years ago. It is a town that has suffered from the mining slump.

Well, clever Broken Hill. The most amazing movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and an on stage musical sensation depicted 3 drag queens on a journey from Sydney to Alice Springs, in the middle of the Northern Territory. On the way, they stop at Broken Hill, who were so not ready for drag queens.

While we had choices in Broken Hill and trust me the art of Pro Hart was close, but, we could not miss the opportunity to see the Main Drag and the drag show at The Palace Hotel in Broken Hill,  with its iconic murals which adorn its interiors. Yes, we were treated to a Priscilla inspired drag show (photo is evidence).

Indian Pacific-broken

What I admire so much about this outback town is that have reinvented themselves, quite ironically, based on the movie.  There is now the Broken Heel Festival where you have desert, divas, disco and plenty more to do darlings …as an aside. It so popular, you need to book early and why not stay at the Palace hotel, and shake your groove thing. Did I love the off train excursion at Broken Hill? Well, “I love the nightlife.” 

The Blue Mountains of NSW

Indian Pacific

Yes, we were edging our way back to home, with an amazing stop in Katoomba and at S cenic World Blue Mountains Australia , which has the steepest railway ‘in the world’ (true),  a cable car ride through the canopy of trees in the Jamison Valley, a bushwalk, a scenic skyway on a glass bottomed thing, and another bushwalk to the Echo Point lookout with a vista over to the  iconic Three Sisters of the Blue Mountains, and where some dumb bitch face-planted on the walk. However, champagne awaited us because the Indian Pacific knows how to look after it, guests, and where I licked my sorrowed wounds…and also had some very good food. It helped…a lot. Read more about the Blue Mountains of NSW, Australia.

Where to Stay before your  Great Train Journey

The sebel east perth.

Indian Pacific

East Perth is cool. Full stop. The Sebel East Perth  riverside property is cool. Full stop. You open your windows to the views of Claisebrook Cove and the Swan River. Not only is the accommodation beautiful, but underneath you have some of the most amazing cafes and restaurants lining the river, which in itself is a lovely walk.  We cannot recommend it highly enough. Latest prices and reviews from Trip Advisor are here . Also, it is a short 5 minute (max) taxi trip to join the Indian Pacific train.

Indian Pacific

Do we recommend the Once in a Lifetime Experience on the Indian Pacific Rail Journey? One of the Great Train Journey’s in the world? Most definitely. It is totally unique, fun and what a way to see the diversity that is Australia, while being pampered and cared for.

Have been wanting to do this trip for a long time, but convincing the wife has been hard. Thanks to your article, she now wants to go. Thank you.

Delighted that this helped. Have fun … both of you will.

BTW – I meant to add that the photos are superb. And I agree 100%, what a great way to see our country!

Thanks so much Dan. I have never seen much of this part of Australia, and loved it. Train travel is a definite yes from us.

What a great write-up. Thanks for sharing.

You lucky b@#tards, I’ve always wanted to do that trip, combined with a top-end cruise. Even booked the train leg of it once, but then pulled out after being given a bit of a run-around. Unfortunately I don’t remember the mob I was using at the time, it was about a decade ago.

Your write-up does the journey so much better a deal than the marketing blurbs I have seen. Thanks for sharing. Would maybe have liked to hear a little more about time spent on the train though. Like were the seats and beds comfortable, and what the access is to bathroom and shower facilities etc. Shared I assume!

I love the slow, rhythmic rocking of a train and would LOVE to sleep on one. I bet I’d finally get a good night’s sleep. I hope the beds were comfortable.

I’m a little concerned I’d have a continuously kinked neck though from looking sideways out the window, as I do on small rail trips. Although I notice some sideways seating in what looked like a bar. I might need to spend a lot of time there! 🙂

Thanks Dan, and you must do it. A lot of the passengers had done the cruise and then the transcontinental train trip. Re bedding and shower facilities. In Gold which we were on, there is a top bunk and a bottom bunk. Both very comfortable. All showering/toilet facilites are private. In Platinum class, you get a double bed and a larger bathroom.

Yes, we loved looking out the windows also as the views changed so dramatically. At times we were in our cabin enjoying this, but mostly in the lounge where there is an open bar and a very ambient atmosphere. Book through Rail Plus, https://www.railplus.com.au/great-train-journeys/ they have their act together.

Day 1: Sydney to outback New South Wales

Queen Adelaide Restaurant, Indian Pacific © Journey Beyond

Afternoon Board at Sydney 's  Central Station  and settle into your cabin, where you'll spend the afternoon taking in the scenery as it transforms from skyscrapers and traffic lights to the forested valleys and sandstone cliffs of the stunning  Blue Mountains . Your on-board radio includes an audio commentary option.

The journey's eastbound service (Perth to Sydney) includes an off-train excursion in the majestic Blue Mountains , which includes visits to the majestic Three Sisters at Echo Point and the spectacular Jamison Valley.

Evening As the sun sets behind mountain ranges you will begin to enter the more arid regions of New South Wales , characterised by hardy mulga (a small native Australian tree) and vast plains. After dinner in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant , meet fellow guests in the  Outback Explorer Lounge  for a welcome drink.

Day 2: Broken Hill to Adelaide

Indian Pacific, outback SA © Journey Beyond

Indian Pacific, outback South Australia © Journey Beyond

Morning The day begins in  Broken Hill , formerly a booming mining town, which has inspired an array of artists over the years with its distinctive desert landscape. On a one-hour walking tour, explore the city's iconic  Living Desert Sculptures  then visit the  Pro Hart Gallery,  where you'll learn all about one of Australia's most celebrated artists, whose works capture the spirit of the outback.

Afternoon After an onboard lunch, the journey continues into the green and golden fields of South Australia 's food bowl. You have a choice between several off-train excursions. You can opt to spend the afternoon and evening in the picturesque  Barossa Valley  or McLaren Vale wine region, the charming heritage town of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills or a private guided tour of the South Australian Museum . All tours include drinks and dinner. Afterwards, all guests rejoin the train in Adelaide to begin the journey across the Nullarbor Plain.

On the eastbound service, which includes a morning stop in Adelaide , your excursion options include an Adelaide city sights coach tour, a progressive breakfast at the famous Adelaide Central Markets , a guided tour of Adelaide Oval or a city and river precinct walking tour.

Day 3: Nullarbor Plain to Rawlinna

Off-train dinner at Rawlinna, Indian Pacific, WA © Journey Beyond

Morning You’ll be greeted at sunrise by the striking, raw beauty of the Nullarbor. Taking its name from the Latin for "no trees", this vast outback plain has bewildered and inspired generations of Australians and visitors alike. A seemingly endless expanse of rusty earth and hardy outback shrubs, the Nullarbor covers 200,000 square kilometres (77,000 square miles) of South Australia and Western Australia and is considered a "bucket list"' experience.

Afternoon Having entered Western Australia , celebrate crossing Australia's most famous plain with a special dinner in the remote outpost of Rawlinna. Here, guests are invited to disembark and partake in a traditional long-table dinner under the bright stars of the outback sky (seasonal). Surrounded by nothing but vast sheep stations (the nearest town, Kalgoorlie , is more than 400 kilometres, or 250 miles away), this is one alfresco dining experience to remember.

The Indian Pacific eastbound service (Perth to Sydney) offers an additional excursion in the wild west gold rush town of Kalgoorlie.

Day 4: Outback Western Australia to Perth

Indian Pacific, Adelaide, SA © Journey Beyond

Indian Pacific, Adelaide, South Australia © Journey Beyond

Morning The scenery transforms again as the Indian Pacific continues through the picturesque  Avon Valley , a patchwork of rolling hills and winding streams. After passing fertile farmland and the occasional hot air balloon, the journey nears the end as Perth's outer city limits come into view.

Afternoon When the Indian Pacific arrives in the west after its epic transcontinental crossing, you have the choice to be transferred directly to your accommodation or to take an optional upgrade tour to explore Perth . On the Perth tour, you'll admire magnificent city views from Kings Park , travel along the Swan River and picturesque foreshore parklands, see Subiaco with its trendy boutiques and restaurants, and Claremont with its upmarket shopping and famous 'Millionaire's Row.' You'll also enjoy city landmarks like the WACA Cricket Ground , Town Hall, Perth Mint , Parliament House, Crown Casino and Barracks Arch .

Perth provides seamless transport options to access beautiful Rottnest Island and its adorable quokkas, the groovy culture and art scene of portside Fremantle , the vineyards of the Swan Valley and charming Cottesloe Beach where you can enjoy a swim in the Indian Ocean. To enjoy the rich heritage of Perth, visit Barrack Square to see The Bell Tower, Perth Mint, the WA Maritime Museum and roam the winding streets of Fremantle before touring its World Heritage-listed prison .

Life on the Indian Pacific – Australia’s Ultimate Rail Journey

Picture of Alesha and Jarryd

  • Last Updated: May 27, 2019

Feature Indian Pacific Rail Journey

The carriages glistened like a long, silver bullet under a pale blue Sydney afternoon.

The station was a hive of activity, with thousands of people darting and ducking off in countless directions.

Trains arrived and departed in continuous streams at Central Station, as they have done for over a century in New South Wales’ capital.

Each and every one was destined to venture out from Central in a spider web of rails networks, transporting their passengers to far-flung corners of the state.

But only one was aiming for Perth, 4352km away, on the other side of the nation. Ours, that waited proudly at platform 3 – the Indian Pacific.

Central Station Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Australia’s most iconic train journey has been crossing the country in one epic adventure since 1970, capturing the imagination of those who are lucky enough to find themselves on board, and others who long to experience a transcontinental mission.

At the end of March in 2016 we had the opportunity to step foot on the Indian Pacific in Sydney and disembark in Perth , four days later.

It was a train journey we had read an abundance of information about, and something we were insatiably curious about.

We had heard tales of its decadence and wonder, of luxury on a level unfathomable on the rails.

But it was only when we were sat in the red velvet interior of the Gold Lounge, sipping on a 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from Western Australia’s Margaret River region and staring out at the vast emptiness of the Nullarbor Plain in absolute comfort that the enormity of this experience was finally realised.

Click here to see our photo journey from the Indian Pacific

Nullarbor Sunrise Indian Pacific

Welcome to the Indian Pacific

After the check-in at Central Station, we stepped through to the platform and were met with canapés and fresh mojitos by the smiling staff. In the centre Michael Duchesne’s crooning vocals set a smooth soundtrack that would remain for the next few days.

As the Indian Pacific readied for departure we excitedly boarded and were shown to our Gold Service Twin room .

Sonya Canapes Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Surprisingly spacious for a train cabin, our room was set up with a couch and small side table. A concealed cupboard allowed us to stow our bags away, allowing the most room possible.

We were lucky enough to have our own private ensuite, complete with a hot shower. After the hundreds of hours we had spent on trains in Asia , this luxury was not wasted on us.

In the evenings our couch was folded away and two bunk beds appeared in their place. The sleeping arrangement was more than fine, and despite the rhythmic bumps and turns in the tracks we had no problems dozing off every evening.

Gold Twin Indian Pacific

The train chugged its way through Sydney and eventually up into the Blue Mountains , winding through gorges and forested valleys.

Michael brought his guitar and vocals to our lounge and jammed away for an hour. The privilege of a private concert from one of Australia’s up-and-coming stars was not lost on us.

Evening began to fall as the sun dropped below the horizon. The patrons found themselves in the lounge, clinking glasses and sipping on cocktails, beers and wine. The drinks are all-inclusive with your fare, and they began flowing faster and faster as time went on.

Michael Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Before the buzz of our fourth wine could grab its hold we were invited to the Queen Adelaide Restaurant for dinner.

The food on the Indian Pacific has been hailed around the world as one of the absolute best culinary experiences on transport imaginable. Needless to say we were more than a little excited.

Scrolling the menu we settled for a variety of tasty and local dishes, and the three courses were served in quick succession.

The waiters were as bubbly as the champagne served, and their humour exceeded expectations along with the impeccable service.

Queen Adelaide Dining Room Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Despite being a luxury train journey, the staff are encouraged to be themselves, letting their individual personalities shine through.

The first night passed in relative comfort and a soft tapping on the door awakened us. Piping hot coffee straight from the machine was served to us in bed, and we were informed we were 30 minutes from Broken Hill.

Jos Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Not just being one continuous journey across Australia, the Indian Pacific is broken up with a collection of “off-train excursions” that make the trip a true cultural experience.

In Broken Hill we were treated to a guided bus tour around this iconic mining town. Unfortunately delays in the middle of the night meant we could not wander around as was originally planned.

Still the chance to see a town that had created such a huge and positive economic impact on the nation was fascinating.

Borken Hill Indian Pacific Rail Journey Sydney To Perth Train #Journeybeyond

Departing town we headed to the dining room for a delectable breakfast, then found ourselves back in the lounge chatting to the other guests.

Most of the passengers were part of an older crowd, and had an endless supply of incredible stories to share. Despite the age difference we had no problem getting to know most on board. Before too long we were laughing and conversing with beers in our hands, making lifelong friends.

As we crossed into South Australia we neared the historic Barossa Valley , one of Australia’s best winery regions and the location of our second off-train excursion.

Seppeltsfield Vineyard Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Our group left the train and boarded air-conditioned coaches to transport us into the Barossa.

The first stop was Seppeltsfield Vineyard , home to 100-year-old ports and an inspirational winemaking culture.

Naturally tasting was involved and we became quite spoilt with the divine flavours from one of Australia’s best vineyards.

Wine Tasting Indian Pacific Rail Journey

A short break involved walking around the main town of the Barossa, but soon it was off to Maggie Beer’s Farmhouse.

Maggie Beer is one of Australia’s most famous chefs, and has been creating unique, local recipes for decades.

After a quick tour of the premises and a cooking demonstration from one of her workers it was time for dinner.

Cooking Demonstration Maggie Beer Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Course after course was presented, coupled with red and white wine, followed by dessert.

Stomachs full and thoroughly impressed by the beauty of the Barossa Valley, we returned to the Indian Pacific in Adelaide and spent the rest of the evening out in the lounge.

Lake Maggie Beer Indian Pacific Rail Journey

We fell asleep as we just left Adelaide, but greeted the morning with a starkly different view.

The train was now approaching the Nullarbor, Australia’s sprawling and seemingly vacant southern interior.

As a result the dirt outside the carriages turned red, and spinifex grass replaced trees and shrubs. Witnessing this transformation of the landscape is one of the greatest benefits of overland travel, anywhere in the world.

Indian Pacific #Journeybeyond

Shortly before lunch we arrived at Cook, a town that is most known for being “abandoned”.

Cook used to be a thriving town of 170 people that helped maintain and manage the public railway system.

Over time the harsh environment took its toll, and when the railways were privatised in 1997 the majority of the population lost their income.

Today the town is a virtual ghost town, with only 4 residents remaining.

Cook Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Wandering through the yards of overgrown and dilapidated houses, staring through the windows of the vacant school and hospital and stepping over broken furniture is a surreal experience.

Cook Jailhouse Indian Pacific Rail Journey

With the Indian Pacific refuelled we all jumped back on board to spend the afternoon sampling more Australian delicacies in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant.

Officially entering the Nullarbor Plain is a memorable moment for many. Having already crossed the never-ending desert once before I couldn’t wait to return for another insight into the harsh conditions.

The train journey across the Nullarbor Plain contains the longest stretch of straight railway in the world – 478km without a single bend or variation.

Many people sat in silence gazing out the window, humbled at the massive and bare world outside our air-conditioned luxury.

Passing Time Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Our final off-train excursion was at Rawlinna, a small outback station that hosts a famous “dinner under the stars” for guests of the Indian Pacific.

Seated in a long line of timber tables we ate roasted lamb and vegetables, topped off with more wine, of course, and chocolate mousse.

Michael Duchesne played again beneath the star-speckled evening sky.

It was a wonderful final night before the last stretch towards Perth in the morning.

Rawlinna Dinner Indian Pacific Rail Journey

There was little more to do on the fourth day besides continue our conversations with the affable guests and staff, play games and make the most of the food and wine onboard.

Soon the Indian Pacific began its final approach toward the end of Western Australia, twisting and winding through the comparatively lush Avon Valley.

After packing our bags we returned to the lounge for one final hour of relaxation.

Beer Wine Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Sitting with a farewell beer in our hands we gazed out the window as the Avon Valley transformed into the outskirts of Perth.

Time passed far too quickly as we reflected on the previous four days crossing Australia.

It’s hard to comprehend just how large Australia is until you have travelled from east to west, admiring the landscape change in dramatic fashion.

Indian Pacific Rail Journey

Finally we arrived at our last destination, Perth, the capital of Western Australia and 4352km from where we first started the journey.

We grabbed our bags, bid farewell to the passengers and staff, exchanged details with those who we had not already, and sadly exited the station.

There was one last glance at the glistening carriages, still as silver as they were under a Sydney sun, and in an instant, we were gone.

Driver Indian Pacific Rail Journey

The Indian Pacific would wait overnight to take the next batch of excited passengers on the journey back to Sydney, as it would time after time.

Having traversed the continent, experienced pure luxury, conversed with interesting people and admired the professionalism and care of Great Southern Rail’s staff, we know that the Indian Pacific is one journey that we will never forget.

DISCLAIMER: We were invited as guests of Great Southern Rail to document the experience onboard the Indian Pacific. All thoughts, opinions, hours spent chatting to the other passengers and wines drunk are of course our own.

Ok it’s one of those train trips I have to do – along with the Ghan!

Which would you recommend to do first???

Moving to Australia next year and these are top priority trips (once those annoying things like I a job, somewhere to live etc are sorted!)

Hi Tracy, we enjoyed both. I think the Sydney to Perth or Perth to Sydney train (Indian Pacific) you really appreciate the train more. You spend more time on the train taking it all in, also getting off for excursions was awesome too. The staff on the train really makes the trip. Both are amazing and we highly recommend with train ride.

Wow, this journey looks amazing you guys! Thanks for showing us what it would be like if we were take a journey around Australia (which we must!) Love that you were able to have a little concert as well, and that your cabin was so spacious – very deluxe looking train. We will have to look into this when we finally get to Australia.

Thank you Dariece. We were so surprised how much room we had in our cabins. It was really nice. And who complains about a little luxury. We hope you get to Australia one day. It is a massive country with so much to see. 🙂

This is such an awesome journey and Australia does not pop to mind when I think train travel! [she says from the middle of the Trans Sib] I know what I’m doing when I go back to Oz!

Hi Jessica, I am glad we have shown you a different type of travel in Australia. It is a great way to see the country. If you are around for a while look at getting a car. You will see so much more of Australia if you have wheels. Hope you enjoyed the Trans Siberia. Happy travels

Wow what a unique and interesting way to see different parts of Australia! Adding this to my bucket list as we speak – I looove train journeys! Choo Choo!

Train journeys are definitely amazing. We love travelling overland. You should definitely tick this off your bucket list one day and in style. You will love it. Thanks Megsy.

Wow, looks like an insane journey. Makes me excited to cross the Nullarbor next year, even if it’s with a tad less luxury!

That sounds like it is going to be an awesome trip. The Nullarbor is beautiful. Some may same not, but each to their own. We loved looking out the window and taking it in. Safe travels Ciara
