William Thomas Emmanuel AM is an Australian virtuoso guitarist and occasional singer and songwriter originally from New South Wales known for his finger style technique.

Tommy had a musical upbringing, learning guitar from a young age and playing as a drummer in a group called Goldrush with his brother Phil. He moved on from this small project to become lead guitarist in The Southern Star Band who were the backing group for vocalist Doug Parkinson at the time and Emmanuel's reputation grew further. He then moved on to tour extensively with rock group Dragon, their schedule included a spell as a support act for the legendary Tina Turner. After this varied and exciting beginnings of his music career, the foundations were set for his solo career.

His solo endeavours were successful, he has recorded over twenty albums in his characteristic finger style guitar playing. His musical talents earned him the opportunity to work alongside artists such as Chet Atkins, Air Supply, Sir George Martin, John Denver, Eric Clapton and Doc Watson to name a few. His latest album 'The Colonel and The Governor' was released in 2013 and was a collaboration with Martin Taylor.

He is one of Australia's most celebrated artists, having performed at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In June 2010 Tommy was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to music. Whilst In 2012 he was honoured on the other side of the pond due to his mastering of the "finger style" method of guitar picking. Therefore the Commonwealth of Kentucky awarded Emmanuel the Kentucky Colonel title, this is the ultimate honour awarded by the state.

Live reviews

There are musicians—some mediocre, some good, a few great—and then there is Tommy Emmanuel. Listening to his recordings, and watching/hearing him on TV, DVD, youTube, etc. tells you that he is a virtuoso instrumentalist. Seeing/hearing him in person reveals him to be a musical genius—a complete one-off. There is no one like him. Top that off with the fact that he’s a genuine, warm, wonderful human being, and you have the Tommy Emmanuel experience. I have been following TE for around 20 years, and have been attending concerts given by some of the world’s greatest musicians for over 50 years. I have never experienced another musician—in any genre—who could covey so much emotion musically. I have seen Tommy move a roomful of people to tears with an instrumental. He belongs at the top of the bucket list of anyone who loves music, anyone who has ever been moved or elated by the sound of a musician rising from the merely excellent to the sublime, even if only for a moment. Tommy Emmanuel, playing live, expresses the sublime from the first note to the last encore.

Tommy Emmanuel’s performance combines classical technique, with modern country good looks and easy going soft rock spirit. He has relocated from Australia to the heart of country music – Nashville, Tennessee. His performance is truly impressive. It is rare that a guitarist can be noticed by the mainstream purely for their technical skill. In a musical era where it seems all one must do to achieve worldwide recognition – acclaim even – is tweet some racy photos, star in a reality show and get someone to produce a single of you singing a song that you most likely didn’t write, Emmanuel is most refreshing.

The only other example I can think of is Carlos Santana, one other classical world musician who has transitioned into the pop-sphere based on an appreciation of actual talent.

To him, Tommy Emmanuel is most definitely comparable. His mad fingered plucking style transitions many genres, from blues and jazz to bluegrass, country and folk, and all I can do is shake my head in awe at how often the most obvious qualities are overlooked.

If you have never seen Tommy play, you are missing out. What this guy can do with a guitar will blow your mind. To him it's more than a guitar but the whole band.

Having lived in Nashville for 15 years, means that a country vibe has set in. The support act was pretty good but not really my type of music. In saying that one song he sang had me in tears.

There was a lot of names being referred to who I had no idea as to who they were, I think they were country artists.

Tommy gave his all, and went for two hours straight. The guy gets better every time I have see him, this is my fourth time.

Great show, as always for TE. First set was all T, with most tunes you hope for and a few new ones. Sound mixed well. Second set brought John Knowles, Pat Bergeson, and Annie Selllick to join T for the Christmas segment. Annie added beautiful vocals, Pat added matching guitar pyrotechics and outstanding harmonica to T’s flash, while Knowles added comparatively subdued guitarwork to balance the others. Everyone on stage seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as the audience, adding to the joy of the show. Excellent all around.

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST , SUCH A WONDERFUL GUITARIST AND A HECK OF A NICE GUY TOO. LIKES A JOKE OR TWO AND BRINGS THE AUDIENCE RIGHT INTO HIS MUSIC . HE BROUGHT ON A YOUNG BLOKE WHO HE MENTORS AND HE WAS JUST AMAZING AND PLAYED A DUET WITH TOMMY . THIS YOUNG GUY HAS A WONDERFUL FUTURE AHEAD OF HIM. THE SAGE IN NEWCASTLE IS A GOOD VENUE . A THOROUGHLY WONDERFUL EVENING OF MAGICAL MUSIC .

The support act; Anthony Snap, Started the show with an incredible performance.

This was followed by Tommy's Flawless renditions of some of his best songs. He must have played between 1.5-2hrs pretty much non-stop, and was incredible throughout.

One of the best concerts I've ever had the pleasure to attend!

I'm sure it was awesome.

Unfortunately I didn't receive my tickets from ticket master.

So I wouldn't know!!!

And you have the cheek to ask me to write so many words?

Trust me you don't want to read that review.

But based on this experience I will not use it again.

Kind regards

Fantastic show as is expected from Tommy. His opening act Antsy McClain was quite entertaining as well. Tommy featured many tunes of the new album which is a really solid record, many great Tommy tunes. Never get tired of seeing Tommy live. Looking forward to next time.

This gig was part of Craig Ogden's guitar weekend, and Tommy Emmanuel's support act was Craig Ogden himself playing some great guitar pieces in the classical manner.

Tommy's set was virtuoso in it's own way and the whole evening was brilliant.

Amazing performance! Super talented guy who was able to really make a connection with the audience! My boyfriend and I really enjoyed the show and it would be great for all ages. His music ranges from slow blues to upbeat jazz, all acoustic.

TOMMY EMMANUEL Gears Up For Major U.S. Tour & Shares “10 Questions” Q&A

Article contributed by sro | published on thursday, july 6, 2023.

tommy emmanuel tour 2022

Grammy-nominated acoustic guitarist extraordinaire, composer and global touring artist TOMMY EMMANUEL is gearing up for a major U.S. tour launching July 12 in Grand Rapids, MI and wrapping December 13 in Sacramento, CA. The tour is pegged to his acclaimed current full-length collaborations album ACCOMPLICE TWO , the follow-up to his Accomplice One album (2018), released this past April via CGP Sounds (view the album’s critical praise HERE ).

EMMANUEL has also shared a freewheeling “10 Questions” Q&A (below) where he talks about his inspirations and an array of subjects including his “Spinal Tap” moment; the JFK assassination; his desire to be on a bill with Carole King and James Taylor; and watching (as a kid) Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

Produced lovingly by EMMANUEL, regarded by guitar great Chet Atkins as “one of the best guitar players I’ve ever seen,” the 16-track ACCOMPLICE TWO is a spirited mix of new takes on indelible classics and brand-new originals from TOMMY. His collaborators are some of the most remarkable musicians on the planet—an “A” list of musicians including Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Michael McDonald, Jamey Johnson, Raul Malo, and many more (the full list is HERE ) EMMANUEL has continued to release videos including most recently these, filmed by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard for Neighborhoods Apart .

“ Mombasa ” with Yasmin Williams

“ Sweet Temptation ” with The Del McCoury Band

“ Daddy Frank (The Guitar Man) ” with Jamey Johnson

ACCOMPLICE TWO is alive with the electric spirit of spontaneous, timeless joy created by inspired virtuosos. The combined artistry contained on these tracks is stunning, as is TOMMY’s cheerful ease at connecting naturally with this vast spectrum of musicians. Like the first volume, he merges the presence of beloved, legendary musicians—such as Jorma Kaukonen, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Little Feat, Sam Bush, the Del McCoury Band and Jerry Douglas—with the bright spirit of acclaimed young artists breaking through with deep artistry and true reverence for the power of song.

10 QUESTIONS WITH TOMMY EMMANUEL (2023)

Have you had a Spinal Tap moment in your career so far and can you describe it?

TOMMY : I've shown up at the wrong hall to play a show!!! Being a male, I don't always follow directions well, and sometimes I’m convinced I know where I'm going!! That's why I have a good Tour Manager...he knows!

If you could have a conversation with anyone who’s living or dead, who would it be and why?

TOMMY : If I could ask Jack Ruby to please tell me the truth about the assassination of JFK, I would love that!

Is there a song you crank up on Friday night to kick off the weekend—and a song you kick back with on a Sunday morning?

TOMMY : Every day is Saturday to me! Some days I like to listen to the Beatles, up loud, sing along and let go. Sometimes I need peace and quiet to be my sanctuary. I am always aware that I must try to preserve what hearing I have, as I was born with yellow fever, so I go carefully.

Which two artists would you like to appear on a dream bill with?

TOMMY : Carole King and James Taylor...What a song list that would be!!

Which famous historical event would you like to have witnessed and why?

TOMMY : I watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon in 1969. I was at school in the Town of Parkes, NSW, Australia. The radio telescope that beamed the images all around the world of this historic event, made it possible for us to see it as it happened!! We had no idea of the significance of being in Parkes on that day, but it was big!

What was the first concert you attended and what was it like ?

TOMMY : My mother, Virginia, took me to my first concert. I was 5, and it was held in the Town Hall of the place we lived, Gunnedah, Australia. We sat in the front row, and as I watched the great Dave Bridge Trio play, my mum leaned in and whispered, "See how he smiles, looks at the audience, stands so straight and tall? See how he looks neat, his shoes are shiny, his hair is perfect, his guitar is glistening in the spotlights. He talks to us, and we can understand him. Don't forget all these things!”

What do you look forward to most when you return home from touring ?

TOMMY : I always love getting to cook my own dinner and sleep in my own bed when I come home from touring. Then I love driving my car!

What musical act, current or defunct, would you most like to see perform live ?

TOMMY : I would love to experience Django Reinhardt live! Charlie Christian with Benny Goodman and his big band, too, and I would love to hear Hank Williams up close, just to feel that mojo!

You have one question to ask one musician. Go for it .

TOMMY : Hey Larry Carlton, what amp did you play the solo on “Kid Charlemagne” through? What a solo!! What a sound! BRAVO!!

Can you talk about a particular book and/or film that has helped shape your sensibility as an artist ?

TOMMY : I don't think there is just one book or movie that has shaped me as an artist. I think it has been my curiosity about some artists that have inspired me to keep reaching for higher standards, higher goals, and deeper meaning for my art/gifts/calling or reason for being who I am. I look at people who move the world, who inspire us all; they somehow show us a way, a trail, a clue as to what they do that causes them to touch our sensibilities. Writers, Actors, Musicians, Producers, Speakers, Comedians and sometimes those who deal with tough physical or mental challenges and still achieve great works that have GREAT meaning in our hurting world. These are the ones that cause me to trust in a power bigger than myself, that make me see that my life has purpose, meaning and momentum. So now I get to work with a full heart, trying to do something that might change someone’s life for the better.

Event Details

Tommy Emmanuel has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. At age 6, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a Certified Guitar Player by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year worldwide. You've got to see him to believe him. With six strings, ten fingers and a whole lot of tricks, this word-renowned virtuosic guitarist creates an orchestra of sound as he explores the bounds of what a single instrument can do. From playing down-and-dirty blues to classic Americana, this Australian performer can make his guitar roar, coo, hiss and sing while playing solo as a virtual one-man band.

MLB

Three Yankees takeaways: Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and All-Star Game possibilities

Jun 2, 2024; San Francisco, California, USA; New York Yankees right fielder Juan Soto (right) celebrates with center fielder Aaron Judge (99) after hitting a home run against the San Francisco Giants during the ninth inning at Oracle Park. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

MLB All-Star Game voting begins Wednesday at noon.

So now is a good time to start thinking about which New York Yankees players could earn selections to this year’s game, which will be played July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Since the first All-Star Game in 1933, the Yankees have been represented by the most players (137) and total selections (441) of any organization.

Here are our leaders for possible Yankees All-Stars, understanding that so much could change between now and when the voting ends on June 27.

Virtual locks: Aaron Judge , Juan Soto

The better question might be: Which one will lead the American League vote total?

Judge and Soto have simply been among the two best players in the game. Going into Sunday, Judge’s 3.9 fWAR and Soto’s 3.6 fWAR were first and third in baseball, with Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt between them at 3.7 fWAR. Then Judge went 2-for-3 and walked twice and Soto had three hits in five at-bats, including two homers, in a 7-5 win over the San Fransisco Giants on the road.

SOTO'S SECOND HOMER IN THE 9TH! #YANKSonYES pic.twitter.com/zJoHMFOyFE — YES Network (@YESNetwork) June 2, 2024

Among outfielders, only the Houston Astros’ Kyle Tucker (3.2 fWAR) has been even close to the Yankees’ dynamic duo. Judge and Soto would essentially have to crater in June for either to lose his presumed spot. Both players have heard “M-V-P” chants in the Bronx.

For Judge, it would be his sixth All-Star appearance. For Soto, it would be No. 4.

The last time the Yankees had multiple starting outfielders in an All-Star Game was in 2021, when Judge was in right field and Giancarlo Stanton was in left.

The next tier: Anthony Volpe , Luis Gil , Clay Holmes

It’s hard to rank who would be the better pick out of these three.

Holmes’ save Sunday gave him 17 on the season, the second most in the AL behind the Cleveland Guardians’ Emmanuel Clase . But relievers can be volatile, especially contact-oriented sinkerballers. Though, if voting ended Sunday, Holmes, who didn’t give up a run over his first 20 games and has a 1.37 ERA, would lock up his second career selection.

Though Witt and the Baltimore Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson (3.4 fWAR) have had incredible seasons, Volpe can make an easy argument that he deserves to be the third shortstop in the AL. His 2.7 fWAR is the third most in the league among shortstops, well ahead of the Texas Rangers’ Corey Seager at 1.7. Manager Aaron Boone came out of spring training repeating that he believed Volpe was a much-improved player from his rookie season, and Boone appears to be right. The most noticeable difference for Volpe has been cutting his strikeouts from 27.8 percent last season to 20.5 percent going into Sunday. His 11 steals were also third among AL shortstops.

Volpe triples in the 9th! 🍿 #YANKSonYES pic.twitter.com/oUJr3gx3yo — YES Network (@YESNetwork) June 2, 2024

Gil would be in the conversation to start this year’s game for the AL. The 25-year-old rookie’s 1.99 ERA was the third best among league starting pitchers, behind the Royals’ Seth Lugo (1.72) and the Boston Red Sox ’s Tanner Houck (1.85). He has racked up 79 strikeouts in just 63 1/3 innings, good enough for an 11.23 strikeouts per nine innings rate — the third best in the AL. The only knock against Gil has been his control. His 31 walks were the most among AL starters entering Sunday.

The question: Will the Yankees allow him to continue starting deep into the season as his workload builds after missing virtually all of last season because of Tommy John surgery?

On the bubble: Luke Weaver , Carlos Rodón , Marcus Stroman

Did you know that, as of Sunday night, Weaver (2.78 ERA, 21 games) had 39 strikeouts, the fourth most among AL relievers? His 35 2/3 innings were the most innings pitched by a non-starting pitcher in the AL, too. The problem: Few non-closer relievers wind up making All-Star teams. Just ask Michael King in 2022.

The Yankees’ rotation has been dominant. Their starters have a combined 2.78 ERA, the best in the AL, with the Royals well behind in second place at 3.10. It helps that Stroman’s 2.73 ERA is the 10th best in the AL and Rodón’s 3.09 is No. 13. Either of them could go on a run and insert himself higher in the All-Star conversation.

Clarke Schmidt (5-3, 2.52 ERA, 11 starts) might have had a chance if not for a right lat strain that landed him on the IL on May 27. He might not be back until August.
