1. Visit Athens, the Ancient Capital of Greece

I’ve been an Athenian all my life, and I absolutely adore this city. It’s got everything you’d expect from a big, bustling metropolis – the good and the not-so-good. Sure, it can get pretty chaotic on some days, but wandering around its historic heart and nearby areas is just something else. I mean, where else can you find the birthplace of Western Democracy? And as you stroll through Athens, you can’t miss the jaw-dropping Acropolis Citadel peeking out from almost every corner.

Visiting Athens in November could be awesome! The weather’s usually pretty chill, so you won’t be sweating buckets while you’re out exploring. Plus, it’s not peak tourist season, so you can soak up all the sights and sounds without feeling like you’re in a crowded theme park.

Athens’ picturesque area of Plaka, the old town, houses beautiful monuments from ancient Greece and empires such as the Roman , the Byzantine , the Ottoman , and everything in between.

Just pack a jacket for the occasional rainy day and get ready to have a blast checking out all the cool stuff Athens has to offer. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

2. Discover the Argo Saronic Islands

The Argosaronic islands are close to Athens connected with many ferries during the day, and with connections between the islands as well.

Starting with the closest to Athens the Argo Saronic islands are:

• Salamina, A e gina , Ag i stri , Poros , Hydra , Dokos, and Spetses .

The Argo-Saronic islands offer a wide variety of things to do and see as they are all rich in culture, history, ancient sites, religious monuments, and beautiful beaches. They are also ideal to be explored by hiking as they all have hiking trails in both forested and rugged areas.

You can take the ferry from Piraeus and stay a couple of days or more on each island and explore its highlights. Each island has its characteristics and traditions to enjoy and each one of them is ideal for relaxing and low-key vacations.

Aegina Island has some very impressive monuments to explore besides its picturesque port:

Temple of Aphaia, Monastery of Agios Nektarios, Medieval Paleochora, Centuries-old Olive Grove, Picturesque seaside villages, and Souvala spa. Find out more about the sites and where best to stay in Aegina in my related post here .

Agistri is a small island covered in pine forests, with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Agistri is ideal to hike in November and visit its three small bougainvillea-laden villages, Megalochori, Limenaria, and Skala. I visited Agistri and it was a wonderful day trip from Athens!

Poros Island is another beautiful pine forest island in the Argosaronic Gulf. It has yacht marinas, neoclassical buildings, an impressive clocktower symbol, tiny alleys laden with flowers and quaint shops, archeological sites, and fantastic beaches with pine forests reaching into the waters.

Hydra Island is the most popular and well-known island of the Argosaronic. It is a classy and cosmopolitan island, where Greek and international members of the rich and mighty have spent time here on its iconic alleys.

Spetses, just like Hydra, has an old-Greece cosmopolitan atmosphere, evident in the classy neoclassical buildings, the mansions, and the villas with impressive gardens. Famous for its turquoise waters, romantic port promenades, and historical monuments, Spetses is one of my favorite Argo Saronic islands. More about Spetses here .

3. Explore Peloponnese on a 4-day Trip

Peloponnese houses so many archaeological sites, castles, caves, and villages, surrounded by a spectacular coastline that you need many weeks to see in detail this magnificent area. I have gathered some of my favorite areas in a 4-day itinerary, taking into account the distances between the areas.

Day 1 – Corinth and Argolis

Corinth and Argolida regions are full of amazing sites:

In Corinth , you can visit the Corinth Canal, Ancient Corinth, and Acrocorinth , and the Isthmia Archaeological site.

In Argolida , you can visit Mycenae , Tiryns , Nemea , The Asklepion Sanctuary of Epidaurus , and Nafplion town.

Overnight at Nafplio at Ippoliti Hotel .

Day 2 – Messinia

Leaving behind Nafplion you travel to Messene, Pylos, and the beautiful seaside village of Methoni with a large castle area. Nearby is Gialova town with the striking Voidokoilia beach.

Overnight at Methoni at my favorite Ulysses Hotel or if you prefer upscale accommodation you should stay at Costa Navarino . A beautiful luxury hotel set in one of the most unspoiled and breathtaking landscapes in the Mediterranean, near Voidokoilia beach , a perfect semi-circle of a beach.

Day 3 – Ilia

On your 3rd day drive along the western coast of the Peloponnese, stop at the UNESCO Archaeological Site at Bassae of Phigaleia with the impeccable Epikourios Apollo Temple, a site of tremendous importance and beauty.

The next stop is at Kaiafas Lake . Cross the road across the lake and stroll on Kaiafas Beach, one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Greece. The next important site is the UNESCO Ancient Olympia Archaeological Site where you will be visiting the birthplace of the Olympic Games. From Ancient Olympia drive to the traditional mountainous village of Dimitsana.

Overnight at Dimitsana Village in Enastron Guesthouse , with fabulous spacious rooms, super large and comfortable beds, a fireplace, and a huge breakfast!

The next day you can explore the stunning sites around Dimitsana Village:

Hiking in the Lousios Gorge or if the water allows it, rafting as well.

Visit stunning monasteries: Moni Emialon and Rock built Monastery of Agiou Ioannou Prodromou. On your return to Athens stop at Vytina village, one of many beautiful mountainous villages in the area. Visit its interesting Folklore Museum, stroll the tree-lined street of love, and taste the local products.

You can return to Athens or go towards the north of the Peloponnese to another fantastic area, Kalavryta , with the gorge train (odontotos).

4. Delve into Unique Pelion Villages

My very favorite place to hike in Greece is Pelion Mountain located in mid-eastern Greece, some 360 km from Athens. Imagine a deeply forested peninsula with 70 traditional, beautiful villages full of old mansions and monuments, trees laden with pears, apples, chestnuts, planes, streams, and centuries-old bridges.

The most famous villages are Tsagkarada , Milies , Portaria , Makrinitsa , and Zagora with museums, libraries, and monasteries to visit and a lot of outdoor activities.

My favorite thing to do in Pelion is after I have hiked on a cold day, I get into one of the many taverns with a fireplace and have a great meal. Pelion is famous for its local cuisine, a very traditional one, using its own farmed products. As if that was not enough, the peninsula is surrounded by endless golden sandy beaches, where you can have romantic walks and dream of next summer!

5. Marvel at 3-Day Trip to Delphi and Meteora

Greece is a mountainous country so some sites are much more challenging to get to them than others especially if you are visiting during the heat of the Greek summer. Two great examples are the steep uphills of the Delphi Archaeological Site and the endless steps to get to some of the Meteora Monasteries .

Delphi and Meteora are best visited in May and on a 3-day trip, spending a night in Delphi and one night in Meteora. A draft of the itinerary can be:

Day 1: Athens – Ancient Olympia in the Peloponnese – Galaxidi seaside town, 30 km away from Delphi. Spend your evening in the beautiful Galaxidi and stay at the best Boutique Hotel in town with the most delicious handmade marmalades: Ganimede Hotel, Galaxidi .

Day 2: Visit the Delphi Archaeological Site, stroll Arachova town, go to UNESCO Osios Loukas Monastery, drive to Meteora, and stay overnight in Kalambaka town. The best Hotel to stay at in Kalambaka is Archontiko Mesohori Suites & Apartments .

Day 3: Visit Meteora Monasteries.

What is the weather like in Greece in November?

According to last year’s weather forecast, during November in Greece, the average temperature was between 10-20 C with 3 days of rain.

However, the temp will be 3-5 C higher or lower depending on whether you are in the north or the south of Greece, in a city, or on a mountain.

What time do the Greek Archaeological sites close?

Acropolis’ gates in winter close at 5 pm (17.00) but the rest of the sites all over Greece close at 3 pm (15.00). Avoid going very close to the closing time, they will not let you in. Be there at least an hour before closure, so that you have ample time to explore.

The good news is that between the 1st of November to the 31st of March all archaeological sites in Greece are half-price!

And even better, everyone has free entrance every first Sunday of the month . For November that would mean that on the 7th all sites will be free to visit (the sites, not the stand-alone museums).

Are there any days that the sites are closed in November?

No, there is no national public holiday during November, everything will be open for business. However, the 17th of November is a celebration of the uprising of students against the dictatorship that ruled Greece between 1967 and 1974. There will be demos near Polytechnic University in Patision, near Omonia sq.

Does Santorini/Mykonos/Rhodes close down in November?

No, they don’t !

The Greek islands have permanent residents who stay on the islands throughout the year. For instance, Santorini has 5 high schools, with a permanent population of 15,520 people! Some businesses do close down but those are usually the large hotel complexes, clubs, big restaurants, etc.

So, don’t worry about going to Santorini or Mykonos in November and it will be just you and 3 stray fat cats. You will definitely find everything that you need on the islands just at much lower prices, with better – fast – service, and in a much more relaxed environment.

FAQ for Driving in Greece in November

• If you are a citizen out of the EU, you will need an International Driver’s License to rent a car
• Always carry chains for your tires, you never know when the next crazy blizzard will find you
• Most of the country is connected by a highway system that uses tolls – open all year through
• Belts are mandatory and you get a huge fine if you haven’t fastened them up
• Children should always be kept in their special seats, fastened, in the back seat
• Driving and talking on the phone also can give you a gigantic fine, use hands-free options
• The high-speed roads are in excellent condition. When you get off the main highways, the roads get significantly smaller, and as all the ski resorts are on mountains, they may look a tad intimidating
• All the ski resorts in Greece have parking places and they keep the roads clear from too much snow or add some salt to make them less slippery.

Are you wondering if November is a good time to visit Greece? More than 20 million people visit Greece each year and while most make the trip for the long summer days and nights in the islands , there are dozens of different destinations to suit all tastes and they definitely don’t have to include swimming or summer. While Greece is a perfect all year destination, there is most often a misconception that the winter months are to be avoided. Let’s take this from the beginning and make a plan of what are the best places to see and do in November and the reasons why November is preferable. Also, we will discuss how to make time for some amazing events and festivals that take place in Greece in November.

What do you need to pack for Greece in November?

Contrary to popular belief, Greece is not a tropical destination where it never gets cold. So for your packing list, prepare for a cold autumn day with lots of layers and a jacket that can be used to protect you from rain and wind. The most adventurous can still put a swimsuit in there, just in case, and you may still find a lot of “winter swimmers” around the beaches. This is also a good thing to keep in mind if you want to visit thermal pools or if you are staying in hotels with heated pools. A scarf, beanie and gloves are great for those that are more sensitive to the cold, especially if you are primarily visiting destinations on a high altitude or northern cities in mainland Greece.

The islands are considerably warmer but can be hit hard by winds so come prepared.

What kind of traveller enjoys Greece in November?

November is neither a party animal favourite nor a sunbather one. It is a month that appeals to those that want to travel slow or fully immerse themselves in the culture and area. November in Greece is great for becoming acquainted with the Greek rhythm of everyday life, finding small tavernas and restaurants that are local favourites and visiting as many cultural sites and galleries as is possible. The weather tends to have the sweet melancholy of autumn, with colourful leaves and moody skies completing the picture.

Solo travellers will find it easier to find affordable accommodation and couples can get moments of privacy and solitude in destinations that are often heavily overcrowded. Just like travelling to Greece in October , you may find a population shift taking place between the islands and the mainland. People living in small and difficult to access islands over the winter period will make the move back to Athens or other cities, while those that call the islands home year round will prepare for the offseason and be considerably more relaxed.

Hikers, nature explorers and athletes will find a multitude of sport and fitness-related events taking place around Greece in November and be excited to explore destinations around the country without the heavy sun rays of the summer.

Families travelling to Greece in November may prefer the more well connected and easier destinations of Athens , Thessaloniki , Crete , Meteora , Rhodes and Nafplio . While these are only some of the many options, a bigger city or island ensures a smoother transportation schedule with fewer chances of delays and plenty of activities to keep young and old occupied even if the weather is unfavourable.

If you are set on swimming then you may find November a bit on the colder side. Interestingly, it isn’t the water so much but the outside temperature that keeps people off the beach. The average water temperature for Greece in November is around 19°C which is chilly but not freezing.

You will seldom be disturbed by other tourists, even in the most popular destinations and will come away with a completely different picture of Greece than what you get in the summer.

Where to travel to Greece in November?

Rhodes is the 4 th largest island in Greece and the largest of the Dodecanese complex . This is great for late autumn travel since the all-year population means that there are still frequent flights and activities and restaurants on the island will still be open even though greatly reduced compared to summer. In addition, Rhodes is often nicknamed the sunny island, boasting more than 300 days of sunshine a year. In addition to convenient transport and warm temperatures, Rhodes simply has so much to offer its visitors. Its history goes back a long way and those interested can spend hours learning more about the geographical significance of this island in ancient times. The name may also be familiar as the place where the Colossus of Rhodes once stood, a towering statue depicting the god Helius (or sun) that stood at more than 30m high.

The medieval city of Rhodes is a must-see for visitors, which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its impressive architecture and the cultural significance and influences. Even better when it can be enjoyed during the offseason.

Other Islands

If you are after a longer holiday with multiple destinations or have been to Rhodes already (which by the way, is fiiine you should go again) then consider the top 5/well known Greek islands. Crete down south, Santorini that is an experience any day, Mykonos which will be a deserted paradise in comparison to its party summer clientele, and Naxos which is not a far way from Athens and has a great vibe for all kinds of travellers.

Events and Festivals in November

November has so many events and festivals to take advantage of, you might have a hard time trying to fit everything in!

All-around Greece

St Andrews Name Day – If you have Greek friends or are just very well informed, you might know that Greeks celebrate name days rather than birthdays (or did nevertheless before the western custom of birthdays became popular). Name days are celebrations on a saint’s feast day. Almost every person in Greece has a name day because most Greeks are baptized into the Orthodox church and thus carry a Christian name. The 30 th of November is a massive celebration around Greece and every household that has members that share this name. I wish I could break the stereotype but if you know one person with this name then chances are there at least a few cousins or relatives sharing it in their family. My family? Five Andrews/Andriana’s and counting!

17 th of November – This day is observed as a holiday around Greece in celebration of the student uprising of 1973. The uprising was in response to the dictatorial rule and military regime of the Colonels that started in 1967 and would last until 1974. Athens Polytechnic students went on strike on November 14 th which began to escalate in tension and lasted until November 17 th when the strike was broken by a tank crashing through the gates of the university. Approximately 40 people are said to have been wounded or fatally injured. Universities remain closed on this day and commemorative services take place as well as wreath-laying ceremonies. Protests take place every year and the downtown area of Athens from the Polytechnic till the United States Embassy is usually flooded with people singing slogans that were used during the original uprising, namely “Bread-Education-Freedom” and the national anthem. Due to increased social unrest, heavy police presence and tension between different groups the area is best to be avoided by visitors and tourists in the area.

21 st of November- This is one of the main and most important celebrations of the Orthodox Church that is known in Greece as “the entry of the Virgin Mary or “The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary” in the Catholic Church. This is a day that always falls within the Christmas fasting period, in which abstinence from dairy, meat, oil, wine and fish is encouraged. However, on the 21st of November, there is an exemption for fish and oil-eating. Some women with the name Maria, Despina, or Panagiota which are other names for the Virgin Mary, have a name celebration on this day. I say, only some because the 21st of November is often reserved for young “virgins” or unmarried women whereas the 15th of August (another day in celebration of the Virgin Mary ) is celebrated by married women. In case of doubt, the easiest thing if you know a lot of Maria’s or Mary’s is to simply ask if they are indeed celebrating!

Location Specific Events

Athens Classic Marathon – If you are a runner then you must be aware of the ultimate marathon race in the world, the classic Athens Marathon. This sport owes its name to the town of Marathon, from where Pheilippides, a Greek messenger, is said to have started running until reaching Athens, in order to announce the victorious result of the Battle of Marathon that took place in 490 BC. According to the story, Pheilippides ran more than 40 km and died from exhaustion soon after. The 38 th annual event always takes place in early November with thousands of participants from around the world.

Thessaloniki International Film Festival – This year marked the 60th International Film Festival in Thessaloniki that is one of the most established and popular events of the year. Events take place in the space of about 11 days in different cinemas and venues around the city with a focus on showcasing the work of “subversive filmmakers from all around the world”.

Thessaloniki Piano Festival – This is another beloved event that has been taking place in Thessaloniki since 2012 and has despite the harsh reality of the economic situation in the country, remained a successful event that attracts plenty of local and international visitors. More than 15 events take place within the space of 2 weeks that showcase a diverse pool of talent, spanning different genres and encourage artistic expression.

Amorgos Tourism Film Festival – Fancy an excuse for leaving the mainland or flying into the stunning island of Amorgos ? The annual Tourism Film Festival is a 4-day event packed with screenings that showcase the island of Amorgos and the Cyclades island complex in general, encourage cooperation and collaboration between the island and other film producers and visitors from Greece or internationally and celebrates artistic mediums and their contribution to societal problems like sustainability in tourism.

Chania Film Festival – If you are in Crete island in early November make your way to the charming port city of Chania that charms everyone with its romantic vibe and Venetian architecture. For more than a week, thousands of people come together to watch the best films from around the world. There are plenty of workshops, classes and exhibitions that take place around this time as well.

Nafplio Castle Run – Another relatively new event that has been picking up incredible support in its 6 th year running. Excuse the pun! This is a unique and challenging fitness event and the only one in the world where participants ascend a castle! Do not be fooled by the fact that this is only a 10km run, the race will challenge even the fittest athletes and will surely be a unique way of experiencing Palamidi castle and the views it gives of the city below. It is also a great excuse for an excursion in the beautiful Peloponnese peninsula!

Greece in November: Average Weather Temperatures

So, here you have it. A complete picture of what Greece in November can offer visitors and a few ideas for where to go, what to see and what events to look out for. You will find most days averaging around 15-20 degrees Celcius with colder days closer to 10 o , especially in mountainous regions. There are plenty of things to do in Athens in November. The city comes to life with many festivals and events, including the annual Athens Marathon, which takes place on the second Sunday of the month.

Second Sunday in Athens: The Athens Classic Marathon

One of the most important events happening in Athens in November, is the annual Classic Athens Marathon race. It takes place on the second Sunday of November, and attracts thousands of observers and athletes from all over the world.

The race begins at the town of Marathon, 42 kms north-east of Athens, and ends inside the Panathenaic Stadium , right in the city centre.

It is a fantastic day to walk around the Greek capital! Several roads are closed to the traffic, and the atmosphere is overall merry, irrespective of the weather conditions. I love watching the participants!

Demonstration on 17 November in Athens

In Greece, the 17th November marks the anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic Uprising, the student uprising against the military junta, which happened in 1973. On this day, every year, thousands of Athenians march towards the US Embassy. The demonstration usually results in clashes with the police.

Unless you want to participate in the march, avoid the areas close to Panepistimio, Omonia, Evangelismos and Megaro Moussikis metro stations. If you are staying in one of the Athens hotels in these areas or on Syntagma Square, keep your eyes open.

This is one of my favourite activities for a cool November day! The temple of Poseidon is located at Cape Sounion, about 70 kms out of central Athens.

The location is right on the coast, offering fantastic views of the Aegean Sea. If I was God Poseidon, this is where I’d like my temple to be!

Welcome to my guide to visiting Athens in November. I cover everything from the best things to do in Athens, my top foodie recommendations and where you need to stay in Athens if you’re on a budget.

I didn’t know what to expect when I visited Athens in November 2019. But it was such a fascinating city that I can’t wait to return… someday. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that there were so many ancient sites throughout the city centre. Like you could visit an ancient attraction and then pop into H&M 10 minutes later. Here are some of the best things to do in Athens in November, plus some additional Athens travel tips.

How to get to Athens

Athens is located right at the end of Europe, so the best way to get there is by plane. I flew into Athens from Munich and flew out of Athens to Singapore via Scoot. I always check Skyscanner  for the cheapest flight deals, then buy tickets on the airline’s official websites. Scoot is 100% a budget airline, but you can’t argue with the price.

Once you arrive in Athens, you can follow my lead and hop on the metro from the airport, which will take you directly into the city centre. From memory, it cost about €10 for the ticket. The one downside is that the train only comes every 30 minutes. But otherwise, the metro is a great way to get around Athens. Honestly, any metro with luggage racks wins points in my book.

Where to stay in athens in november.

If you’re a fellow solo or budget traveller, I highly recommend staying at Mosaikon . Firstly, it’s in a very central location. It’s walking distance from Monastiraki Square and its metro station, as well as the main shopping street and the Plaka neighbourhood. Secondly, the staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly. I chatted to a couple of the girls who were so lovely and helpful.

Now, onto the hostel itself. It’s a very modern facility, with a kitchen and a rooftop with Acropolis views. I stayed in a four-bed female dorm and each bed came with a shelf, light and privacy blind. The ensuite bathroom was also incredibly spacious and clean. Definitely check out Mosaikon when looking for budget accommodation in Athens, as it’s one of the top-rated Athens hotels on Booking.com , TripAdvisor and Hostelworld (I found Booking.com had the cheapest price when I booked).

Why is november a good time to visit athens.

I believe November is a good time for  visiting Greece and Athens because the weather is great and there are fewer crowds. Honestly, the November weather in Athens was perfect. The temperature was warm but not too hot, so I could comfortably walk around central Athens in the sunshine in jeans and a t-shirt. The average rainfall for November is only 2 inches too. November is also one of the best times to travel to Greece as it’s in the shoulder season, which equals fewer people than the summer months , good weather and cheaper prices. Other shoulder season months: April, May, September and October.

What to pack for Athens in November

If you’re wondering how to dress in Athens in November, I just wanted to reiterate that I was comfortable wearing jeans and a t-shirt and it seemed to be what most people were wearing (tourists and locals). I paired my outfit with my beloved Allbirds , a.k.a the best travel shoes ever. I also wore my light jacket on the Greek Islands day trip mentioned below, as the breeze on the deck was a little brisque at times. Hopefully, that helps you decide what to wear in Athens in November.

Ok, now you’re set to visit Greece in November, let’s dive into what to do in Athens in November. I just wanted to note that Athens is home to a plethora of ancient attractions and I haven’t mentioned them all below because nobody has time for that! However, you can easily view many of them, including Hadrian’s Arch, Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s Library, for free just by walking around the city.  

Go on a walking tour

Soak up that perfect Athens weather on a walking tour, which is one of the best ways to learn more about Athens. I joined Athens Free Tour and my guide was a lady affectionally known as Princess. I chatted to her as we walked between stops and she was an incredibly interesting woman in general. But her tour was also fantastic. Starting from Hadrian’s Arch, she told us so much information about Athens, the military and the current political climate. We passed through the National Garden (definitely visit even if you don’t do a free walking tour), stopped to see the changing of the guards and then finished in Plaka. This is hands down one of the best things to do in Athens.

Do a Greek Islands cruise from Athens in November

I did a Greek Island day tour from Athens and it was awesome (a long day, but awesome). You can read more about the tour in this blog post , but we visited three islands and my favourite was Hydra. Although heading from Athens to Santorini is a popular route, unless you fly you can’t really do a day trip to Santorini. I also think Athens in November is superb, but you will want to visit the Greek Islands in warmer weather because that also equals warmer sea temperature .

Stroll through Plaka, Athens

Plaka is one of Athen’s most photogenic neighbourhoods. Its main thoroughfare, Adrianou Street, is home to lots of shops and is the perfect place to go souvenir shopping in Athens. Its adjacent streets are also overflowing with restaurants. For photos, I recommend heading to Lisiou Street, as it’s home to the Plaka Stairs and colourful buildings with overhanging bougainvillea and wrought-iron balconies.

Lycabettus Hill is the city’s highest point and you can reach the summit by walking or taking the funicular. With a restaurant and church at the top, Lycabettus Hill looks towards the Acropolis and apparently sunset is the best time to visit.

Go shopping in Athens

Besides Plaka, the city’s other popular shopping street is Ermou Street. Running through the city centre, it’s home to popular shops like Flying Tiger, H&M and Zara. I did go for a wander through the Athens Flea Market at Monastiraki Square, but the stalls here are mainly filled with cheap souvenirs, knock-off designer accessories and randomly, a lot of camouflage paraphernalia.

The Athens Classic Marathon is an annual road race held annually in early November since 1972. There’s no qualifying time so anyone can participate.

Visit the Acropolis

Sitting on a hill overlooking the city, the Acropolis is one of the top places to visit in Athens. It’s known for being home to several ancient landmarks and archaeological sites , but its most famous resident is the Parthenon. Purchase tickets in advance and head here first thing in the morning to try and beat the crowds.

One of the best free things to do in Athens is wandering up towards Anafiotika. This was a random place I found through Pinterest research, but I highly recommend taking a detour to Anafiotika. Located next door to Plaka, it’s a small neighbourhood nestled under the Acropolis. It’s incredibly photogenic and there’s random street art everywhere. I kind of felt like I was trespassing to see some of the street art, but there was no one else around so I happily wandered and took photos. Alternatively, you can also take a street art tour that’s guided by a local street artist.

Visit a museum

Athens is home to several museums, with the most popular being the Acropolis Museum . The archaeological museum was built to house all artifacts uncovered on the Acropolis itself, so it’s a must-visit Athens museum for ancient Greece history lovers. Other museums to check out include the National Archaeological Museum , Benaki Museum (with eight different buildings and museums under its umbrella) and the Museum of Cycladic Art .

Where to eat in athens in november.

Food-wise, I found Athens to have both cheap snacks and more expensive restaurant meals. There are also a lot of restaurants to choose from, so don’t be alarmed if servers try and tempt you to stop at their establishment. Here are the best places to visit in Athens in November. Let’s just say, I ate very well.

Oven Sesame

Located just down the street from my hostel, Oven Sesame is a great place for a quick bite. They specialise in inexpensive toasted sandwiches in these delicious sesame pockets. I had the vegetarian Mozza Melt, but there are lots of sweet and savoury options. You also get a casual view of the Acropolis while dining outside. Did I mention Athens is cool?

Etnico Street Food

This is another eatery near Mosaikon that does a range of street food from countries like Mexico, Korea and India. I was craving Mexican and a burrito from Etnico Street Food seriously hit the spot. It also cost about €5 and the staff were very friendly. 

I ventured over here from my hostel because it had good Google reviews and it’s such a cute and colourful place. Like Etnico, it’s a multi-ethnic restaurant that does breakfast, Sunday brunch, lunch and dinner. I went with the homemade pink lemonade and the Chicken and Parm Burger – fried chicken with tomato sauce, rocket, two different kinds of cheese and caramelised onions. Yes, it was as good as it sounds. With indoor and outdoor seating and friendly staff, I recommend visiting Mama Roux when in Athens.

This bakery and cafe on Ermou Street has a cabinet stocked with Greek pastries. I personally grabbed a spanakopita for a snack one day, because when in Greece, right?

Oh. My. Goodness. I still dream about the amazingly decadent and delicious loukoumades I had at Lukumades in Athens. Named the world’s most unique doughnuts, the freshly-baked and crispy dough balls are an authentic Greek delight. You can get them the traditional way with honey and cinnamon. However, I chose to get mine topped with ice cream, nuts and a chocolate sauce.

This is what dreams are made of… 😂

Other recommendations I didn’t get to check out include Noel , a year-round holiday-themed bar and Little Kook, which is a fairytale-inspired cafe .

My mom and I did a private food tour and it cost something crazy cheap like $15 per person (plus money for food along the way). We had the best time, and we learned so much about Athens’ history through its food.

Sorry to say it, but if you hoping to spend your time on the beach in Greece in November, it is very unlikely it will work out.

That said, you could get lucky with some random, unseasonably warm weather, but you shouldn’t count on it.

You will find the city much less crowded, cheaper, and overall more bearable than in the dead of August.

You can expect several things when you go to Athens in November.

Athens weather in November is mixed – some days are freezing and wet, while others offer clear, sunny skies above. The average temperature was 59 F (15 C), with maximum temperatures of 64 F (18 C) and low temperatures of 54 F (12 C).

At night, the cold air rolls in, making the jackets chilly. In terms of precipitation, a month averages 7 to 8 days of precipitation .

That may not seem like a lot of rain compared to many places worldwide, but it is Athens’ second biggest month of rain.

Chances are it could rain a little while you are in Athens, but I bet the weather could be worse from where you are traveling.

I would recommend Athens in November over the summer months every time. It is truly too hot to enjoy Athens for more than 2 days when it’s a billion degrees. November is so comfortable with a light coat.

Fewer Tourists

Hell, to the yes, there are fewer tourists in Athens in November! Maybe it’s just me, but I would rather visit cities when they are less crowded .

Sure, you aren’t going to have that Greek summer weather, but if you are coming to explore the culture of the ancient Greeks, you don’t want scorching temperatures.

Take it from someone who lives in Athens , you don’t want to be here in this summer.

It’s Cheaper

From November 1 till March 31, everything in Athens is just cheaper . This includes hotels, museums, and, in some cases, flights.

For example, entrance tickets to all the famous sites are lower by a few euros, depending on the venue.

Those swanky hotels with amazing views may now be within your budget !

Start with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Acropolis! This archaeological wonderland contains many ancient buildings.

The Propylaia

The gateway to the Acropolis, otherwise known as The Propylaia. You will funnel through this gate into the main archaeological sites.

Erechtheion

The Erechtheion or Temple of Athena Polias is most my favorite ancient ruin. It is recognizable for the statues of women holding up sections of the building.

Other Top Sites in Athens

Roman agora.

April 1st till October 31st Open Daily 8:00 – 19:30 & November 1st till March 31st Open Daily 8:00 – 16:30

The word Agora means “meeting place.” The archeological site of The Roman Agora was the ancient open marketplace where things like meats and vegetables were sold, and things such as wool and grain were traded.

If you are short on time, you could just walk by and get photos from the exterior.

Ancient Agora of Athens

April 1st till October 31st Open Monday 11:00 – 19:30 and Tuesday – Sunday 8:00 – 19:30 & November 1st till March 31st Open Daily 8:00 – 15:00

The ancient Agora of Athens is an important site in Greek history. This was the gathering place, also referred to as the “assembly place,” where the political business would take place.

This site would also be known to gather and listen to religious philosophers and to watch performers.

Prioritize visiting the Ancient Agora of Athens if you have the time. It is a large site that you can expect to take about 1-2 hours to explore .

Temple of Olympian Zeus

April 1st till October 31st Open Daily 8:00 – 19:00 & November 1st till March 31st Open Daily 8:00 – 15:30

A temple built to honor the Greek god Zeus was built between the sixth century BC and the second century AD. The temple was once the second-largest temple in Greece.

Destroyed in an invasion, now only 15 columns remain standing of the 104 that were originally built.

Go to all the museums

When the weather conditions look a bit undesirable, you can hit the museums and art galleries.

The best include Radio Atènes , the Museum of Cycladic Art , and the National Museum of Contemporary Art .

It can be hard to predict the November weather when you visit Greece, but if you plan the main attractions wisely, it will work out great!

Stroll all the quaint shops

Who doesn’t love a little shopping? Especially on those chilly days, it is a great way to spend your time in Athens!

November is an excellent month to go shopping in Athens because there are fewer crowds. The main shopping centers at the heart of town are Ermou streets and its labyrinth of side streets. On Ermou Street, you will find all the commercial brands and stores you may have back home.

Kolonaki is the best location for high-end fashion, but there are other cool things to do in Kouchaki and Psiri. The Varvakylos Food Market is ideal for those who want herbs, spices, and traditional Greek food.

Finally, take an excursion to Plaka and Monastiraki to find interesting and unique souvenirs. Monastiraki is also the home to Athens Flea Market!

Eat traditional Greek food

No matter what the weather is like in Greece in November, you can eat incredible food! Athens, Greece, is the melting pot for all the traditional Greek food.

Each region of Greece is known for its specialties when it comes to cuisine. Crete is known for its marathópitta (fennel pie), and Rhodes is known for Melekuni, honey, and seed dessert bar.

In Athens, the famous dish is Moussaka, which can be compared to lasagna. Moussaka is traditionally eggplant or potato-based with some sort of traditional meat. If you don’t eat meat, like me, you can find a vegan version at select restaurants.

Find all the street art

There is no shortage of street art in Athens! Areas with the most street art are Exarchia, Psyrri, Anafiotika, and Gazi. Make it your mission to check out the art in every area.

Go on coastal walks

In November, the average high temperature is 59oF (15oC), with a maximum of 64oF (18oC) in Athens, so it may be too cold to go to the beach. However, fun things to do could include a walk along the stunning coastline.

A good place to start would be the Pireas port. From there, you can walk along the coast, stopping in cafes and restaurants.

Visit A Hamman

Spa day, anyone? When I visited Athens in November, there were a couple of rainy days. On those days, I booked into a Hamman .

It is a bath house for those who don’t know what a Hamman is. Think steam rooms and saunas. Perfect activity in November in Athens!

You could also get a massage and facial , which I also did on my trip at Hotel Grande Bretagne . If you don’t want to do that either, you could also get your nails done.

Walking Tour of Athens

The best way to see the city of Athens is via a walking tour. Have a local travel specialist take you around the city center and educate you on ancient Greece.

One of the best parts about visiting Athens in November is there are fewer tourists! This makes it easier to enjoy the city. You will also notice lower prices when visiting Greece in November.

Perks When Visiting Athens in November

November is a budget month to visit athens.

November is basically the shoulder season, making November a great month to visit Athens for your budget . Flights from many parts of Europe can generally be much cheaper in November than in summer.

Depending on where you are traveling from, plane tickets can still be expensive. Fares from other European cities will likely be much lower.

Athens hotels may be where you find the biggest savings! Staying in a fancy hotel in central Athens in November could be much more affordable than in summer.

Enjoy the Christmas Decorations in November

When you visit Greece in the later part of November, you also have the opportunity to check out the Christmas decorations! Now you might be thinking, really? Christmas Markets in Athens, Greece?

It gets quite festive at the end of November and all of December in Athens ! Lights and decorations will fill Syntagma Square. Find the Christmas Tree Boats (Karavaki) along the ports. These small boats are decorated like a Christmas trees.

Where else can I go?

Want to see more than just Athens? Throughout November, temperatures in Athens may be completely different than in other cities in Greece. Some Greek islands are closed for tourism altogether, while others are open.

If you are itching to leave the Greek capital for a change of scenery, you have options!

Greek Islands to Visit in November

What to expect when visiting Athens in November can also be applied to the Greek islands. Not all islands are open for tourism, but some of the larger ones are.

Crete is a Greek island that is open year-round. The average rainfall in Crete in November weather is around 87mm, with an average wind speed of 9mph. Not the ideal time if you are interested in the pristine beaches in Crete.

However, it would be a great island to visit if you are interested in the stunning monasteries and archaeological sites. I would suggest you fly to Crete from Athens .

As I mentioned, most of the remote islands in Greece are closed in November. However, if you are set on visiting an island in Greece in November, I suggest going to Hydra.

Day trips to Greek Islands

Hydra is only 2 hours via ferry , making it the perfect island to visit for a day trip! Hydra is located in the Saronic Island group in the central Greece region.

Although November may not be the time to visit the beautiful beaches, there is a lot of ancient Greek history to indulge in.

If you are looking for day trips a little closer to Athens, I suggest a day trip to Peloponnese. There are some great organized tours to join if you don’t want to research going on your own.

What to pack for Athens in November?

In November, you can visit Athens and pack clothing in various combinations. On sunny days you can wear jeans and an oversized T-shirt comfortably. Make sure to carry some light clothing and a sweater.

Most Athenians swim on a sunny November day in Athens, even though summer temperatures aren’t quite as high.

Swimming in November in Athens doesn’t sound like a great idea to me, but if you are brave and want to fit in with the Athenians, I say go for it! Bring a bathing suit, just in case! You could also use it if you visit a spa with an indoor pool.

A raincoat and umbrella are also a good idea. You should pack comfortably but don’t need to go crazy with winter gear.

Tip: You must wear a sturdy and safe pair of shoes when you visit ancient monuments. I would advise high heels or difficult-to-walk-in shoes altogether.

FAQ about visiting Greece in November

Yes! In fact, there is FREE Entry on the first Sunday of every month, starting November 1st until March 31st. The opening times are limited from November 1st till March 31st. Doors open at 8 am, and the last entry is at 16:30, closing at 17:00. Arrive at least 1 hour before closing so that you aren’t rushed.

It is absolutely worth visiting Athens in November. It will be a completely different experience than visiting in the summer months. Athens is a big city full of culture and ancient history! Don’t let the winter season stop you from visiting this amazing city.

When visiting Athens in November, you can expect cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and discount prices on museums and hotels. In many ways, November is a much better time to visit Athens than the summer.

We have never visited Europe as late as November. So it was interesting to see what Athens might be like at this time of year. I would certainly be interested to visit when it was a bit cooler, cheaper and less crowded. It sounds like a great time to enjoy both outdoor and indoor sights.

Santorini in November: Here’s What It’s Actually Like

If you’re heading to Santorini in the month of November, the first week is the best time to still have a choice of shops, restaurants and attractions to enjoy. It really can be a good time to go if you’re interested in doing more than just lounging around beside the Aegean Sea.

Later in the month, the island’s fully into “winter season” in terms of activities and attractions. By then, the weather’s usually more mixed with a higher chance of clouds, rain and storms, too.

Having said that, there are some restaurants and shops open all year round, and the weather can be perfect for hiking. Here’s what to expect on Santorini island in November.

As with October, the weather in November can be changeable. So when visiting Santorini, you should expect mixed weather. But still anticipate enjoying some sunny days. I’ve certainly managed to get some interesting tan lines walking about early in the month!

At this time of year, there are about 10.5 hours of sunshine. The average daytime high is 18°C/64.4°F, and at night it’s 14°C/57.2°F. But as they’re averages, it’s usually a bit higher towards the front end of the month and then lower as it heads towards December.

The average sea temperature is still higher than in the spring, so swimming and boat trips are still an option.

Adverse Weather Affecting Travel in November

The weather can affect your travel plans at this time of year, so be aware of that.

When I returned from Santorini in November, there was a shipping ban around the Cyclades because of the high wind gusts.

Even if it’s not the most pleasant experience for passengers, ships generally run if they can dock safely. If they can’t, that’s when they’re cancelled.

Leave enough time if you’re travelling back to Athens to catch a flight home or be prepared to take an alternative route. Be aware that flights will fill up fast if the ships are cancelled.

🏨 Here are some hotels close to Athens Airport if you need them.

Flights generally aren’t cancelled for high winds, but you might experience some mild to moderate turbulence on take-off and landing. Your flight time can be affected, too.

We had some tailwind on the flight down from Athens to Thira Airport in November and got there in 24 minutes flat. Going back, flying into the wind, the same journey took 46 minutes.

If you fly when it’s windy, watch your stuff when you get off. People were losing sunglasses, hats and jackets as they came down the steps from the plane to the tarmac. There’s a pile of stuff at the perimeter fence now, I think!

Are Places Still Open In Santorini in November?

November on other Greek islands would be classed as one of the winter months (tourist season-wise). But in Santorini, it’s the tail end of the high season. So, it is one of the best places to go if you’re considering the islands .

Some hotels, restaurants and clubs do close at the end of September. And a significant amount close by mid-late October. But there are still enough things running in early November to make it a worthwhile time to visit .

Accommodation

The majority of Santorini hotels are closed in November, particularly along the Oia caldera. If you’re looking for something opulent, your biggest choice will be amongst the luxury villas.

If you go that route, check they’re set up to deal with cool weather days. You want to confirm that the house has a hot water heater (not just solar) so that you can still have a hot shower when it’s cloudy.

Ask about heating, too. Probably, they’ll all have AC, in which case they have a heating option too. But try and look at reviews from the same time of year and see if that was enough. Towards the end of the month, a stone building might be quite cool to sit in, in the evening.

You will find a few villas in Oia, as well as more in other spots like Fira and Pyrgos.

Pyrgos is a nice location to base yourself in for discovering the island in the off-season.

If you want a hotel in Santorini rather than a villa, there are a few luxury hotels open.

Olvos Luxury Suites has some beautiful suites along the Oia caldera that are available in November. Rocabella Hotel and Spa at Imerovigli is open all year, and several posh suites are still running in Imerovigli, too.

There are other budget options around the island. Search in booking.com and use the filters to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Restaurants and Bars

Again, the majority of restaurants and bars with a caldera view are closed by November. But you will find some that are open. You might not experience the finest cuisine that Santorini has to offer. But you can still get a decent meal with a great view.

As an example:

Fira restaurants still open in the first week of November 2023 include:

• Kaliya Reimagined – caldera view
• Classico – caldera view
• Triana Tavern
• Pelican Kipos
• Nikolas Tavern
• MALT restaurant

Plus, there are others along the caldera and several on the main square.

• Apsithia – caldera view

and a few others along the caldera and cafes on the square by the bus and taxi ranks.

Note that most of these places will close by mid-November.

In Pyrgos , I noticed Johnny’s and Brusco (very good) were open as I drove past.

In Akrotiri , near Red Beach, Peirasmos was open, and The Dolphins Taverna is open all year.

There are other restaurants around the island that stay open in November, too.

The beach clubs usually wind down in October, so what you’re left with in November are nice, natural beaches. Most still have shops or facilities open nearby, though, so you can stock up on food and drink on those great weather days.

And, of course, you can easily access Perissa and Perivolos Beach as well as Kamari. (And Monolithos if you’re staying by the airport.)

I didn’t visit Kamari Beach in November, but I flew over it, taking off from the airport when I left. From the air, I noticed about three sections still had sunbeds and loungers set up. So you can try there if you want a serviced beach experience.

Red Beach in November

The boat running between the Red Beach, White Beach and Meso Pigadia Beach has stopped for the season for sure.

But the public buses still run to Akrotiri, so you can walk along to the Red Beach viewpoint. It’s nice to enjoy the stunning red sand and cliffs without the umbrellas and loungers at the end of the beach.

There are still enough shops open at the beginning of the month to feel like you’ve had a perfectly good shopping experience. After the first week of November, the vast majority will have closed down.

While most shops close in the winter, some boutiques and shops in both Oia and Fira stay open all year round. Cruise ships visit through the low season, and people still come to walk the caldera and see the sunset. Plus, locals need clothes too!

You’ll spot the open shops easily as you wander around because the others are shuttered closed.

Attractions and Things to Do

Again, while some things have ended their season, there are enough attractions still running at the beginning of November for you to fill your time well.

Museums and Sites

Ancient Thera and the archaeological site of Akrotiri are open throughout the year. Government-run historical sites like these have summer hours from April to October and winter hours from November until March.

However, they are still plenty long enough for you to enjoy, and if you time it right, you might even get free entry. The first weekend of every month, government-run museums in Greece are free to enter.

In November, Akrotiri Excavation Site and the Museum of Prehistoric Thira are open every day except Tuesdays from 08:30 – 15:30. Ancient Thera is open the same hours every day except for Wednesdays.

Individual entrance tickets are at a reduced price in the winter. All three of these sites have free entrance on the first Sunday in November , so it’s the ideal time to save some money.

The Lost Atlantis Experience is open for the first few days of November and then closed for the rest of the season.

The Tomato Industrial Museum at Vlychada advertises as being open from April until October. But in 2023, they had tickets available until the end of the second week in November.

It’s quite a fun, interactive museum and Vlychada Beach next door is an interesting one to visit.

Wine Tasting

You don’t have to miss out on Santorini’s lovely white wines when you visit in autumn. You can join small group wine-tasting tours as well as arrange your own private one.

Usually, you visit three wineries, so obviously, you’ll be taken to places that are open in November.

If you don’t want to join a group, the following wineries are still open in November:

Estate Arygros at Episkopi Gonias near Kamari and the Airport offers its 90-minute tasting and local bites until the second week of November. Their 45-minute welcome tasting is available all month (closed on Sundays).

Domaine Sigalas near Oia is open the first week of November for tastings only (restaurant is closed)

Venetsanos Winery is on the caldera at Megalochori, right above Athinios Port. In November, they offer two wine tastings . One has four wines, and the other has six. Both come served with local delicacies.

Cooking Class

If you want to learn to cook local recipes while on the island in November, you still can. To Spitiko Mas has cooking lessons through the autumn/fall.

As I said in my post about April in Santorini , the sunset is as beautiful in winter as it is in summer. It might be different than the quintessential sunset pics you’ve seen of Oia in the summer months.

You can still enjoy the famous sunsets even with cloudy skies

But the days when the weather conditions are mixed can be the best way to see the stunning colours of the sunset. November’s a great time of year to enjoy the sunset with somewhat fewer tourists crowing up Oia’s narrow streets.

Here are the best spots to watch the sunset in Fira town. You don’t need an organised sunset tour to enjoy the view.

Boat Trips, Hiking and Other Outdoor Activities

As I’ve mentioned, Santorini weather can be changeable in November, and there will usually be some windy or rainy days. But the cooler weather lends itself to hiking (one of the best things to do, in my opinion) and other outdoor activities.

Volcano Boat Trips

Boat trips to the volcano and the hot springs run at the beginning of the month. As the good weather becomes less reliable, they begin to taper off. By late November/the last week of the month, I don’t think you’ll find anything still running.

You can also still do boat rental without a license and make your own trip along the coast.

Kayak tours still run right through into December. Obviously, this and the boat trips are weather permitting. If there’s a strong wind or other bad weather forecast, then be prepared for the activity to be cancelled.

Bike tours run throughout the month and caldera hiking tours from Fira to Oia run on selected dates in November.

As well as the famous caldera walk there are some other really pleasant walking paths on Santorini. November can be a great time of year to discover them. I’ve written about the hikes here if you’d like to do a few while you’re there.

It’s also worth thinking about doing a half-day trip to Thirassia island to hike. The boats from Ammoudi Bay run all year because there are permanent residents.

But watch if the weather’s on the windy side. The boats don’t dock if the water’s too choppy, so make sure you can get back.

Getting Around The Island

Public buses in the shoulder season.

If you’re only staying a few days, your accommodation is central and just want to visit the tourist hotspots, then the public buses are probably absolutely fine.

You check the public bus timetables on the K.T.E.L website. They only display the current schedules, though, and they do change over the year.

Organised Tours

I’d also recommend looking at group or private tours to take you around the various attractions. That’s a really simple way of enjoying what you’re there to see without worrying about logistics.

Private and group tours are winding down in November, but you’ll still find some options for part of the month. If you go on Get Your Guide, you can see what’s available during your travel dates.

Taxis and Shuttles

Taxis are always available, and your hotel might provide a guest shuttle bus that you can book to get around.

However, if you’re staying a bit longer, are choosing out-of-the-way accommodation or want to take advantage of the cooler weather to go hiking, then maybe renting a car would be the best option.

It depends on what you want to do. Plenty of hikes are accessible from bus routes, so just think through your itinerary and about where you’re staying.

As with other services, a lot of the car rental companies just run until October. But some you can book with in November are:

Avance a national Greek company that’s open all year. I’ve used them lots of times on various islands, so you’ll be able to rent from them in November.

Kronos is based at the port, and I’ve rented from them before, too. They also drop off/collect from Santorini Airport if you’re flying in or out.

What to Wear Visiting Santorini in November

When you visit Santorini in November, I recommend almost the same clothes as in summer. Although it’s the off-season, it can still be pleasant weather, as I’ve said.

Plus, while it’s nowhere near as hot as the peak summer months, it can get humid on the islands. And that can make you feel much warmer.

In addition to what I recommend wearing here for a comfortable trip , make sure you also have a light jacket and/or long-sleeved top for cool evenings and boat trips.

From mid-November on, jeans or long trousers are probably a good idea for cool weather.

What are the hottest Greek islands in November?

What’s the weather like in Greece in November, and which is the hottest Greek island? A better question might be: should you even visit the Greek islands in November?

The tourist season in Greece usually ends in late October, at the end of half-term week. You can still enjoy a city break in Athens (it’s a lovely time for sightseeing) and you can grab some winter sun on the island of Cyprus (which is not strictly-speaking part of Greece) but you’ll struggle to find a direct flight to many of the islands. At best, you’ll need to change plans or switch to a ferry in Athens. It’s possible, just not convenient.

Once you get there, you may find some hotels, bars and restaurants have shut up shop for the winter, particularly on the smaller islands. However, Greece is beautiful in November and can still be warm and sunny – and some tour operators are talking about extending the autumn season into November as global temperatures rise, so watch this space.

Which Greek islands will be hottest?

Average temperature in November: 22ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 7 Flying time from UK: 5 hours

There’s one island that offers near guaranteed warm weather and long days of sunshine in November, and that’s Cyprus . It’s a longer flight than to most Greek islands, but worth it if you want fine weather. Even the sea is warm enough for a dip in November at 21ºC, while night time temperatures rarely dip below 12ºC.

Average temperature in November: 21ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 6 Flying time from UK: 6 hours (via Athens)

Karpathos lies between Rhodes and Crete in the Dodecanese. It’s a long way south and enjoys lovely warm sunny weather in November, particularly the first half of the month when it’s possible to sunbathe on the beaches and swim in the sea. This is a charming island with a rugged interior where you’ll experience the real character and hospitality of the Greek people.

Average temperature in November: 19ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 6 Flying time from UK: 4 hours

Kos is one of the most southerly Greek islands, close to the Aegean coast of Turkey, and is among the warmest in November. It’s won’t be hot, but six hours of daily sunshine will feel wonderful, and sea temperature is 20ºC. There’s only a small chance of rain towards the end of the month, but this is a good time of year to discover the markets and historical sites of Kos Town.

Holiday recommendation: the luxury all-inclusive IKOS Aria is great value but will have closed for the winter by the start of November.

Average temperature in November: 20ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 6 Flying time from UK: 4 hours

Crete is the largest Greek island and has some of the best winter weather. You can be eating lunch under a blazing November sun while gazing up at snow-capped mountains. It’s also a fabulous time for hiking – don’t miss the dramatic Samaria Gorge. Expect 20ºC temperatures, falling to 13ºC at night with a chance of rain on 7-8 days. The sea will be 20ºC, fine for a quick dip.

Average temperature in November: 18ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 4 Flying time from UK: 3 hours 15 minutes

Corfu is further north than most islands and in the Ionian Sea, rather than the Aegean. It’s a little cooler, as a result, and not the warmest destination in November. However, it’s a great time of year to visit monasteries, palaces, museums and churches. Rain is possible, so pack a brolly.

Holiday recommendation: these villas in north-east Corfu are lovely.

Average temperature in November: 19ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 5 Flying time from UK: 4 hours 15 minutes

Santorini is scorching in summer, and packed with tourists. Visit in November and you’ll appreciate the pretty villages and rugged volcanic countryside. There’s less chance of rain than in Corfu, and the sea temperature is around 19ºC, not freezing.

Average temperature in November: 17ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 5 Flying time from UK: 3 hours 15 minutes to Thessaloniki 

Halkidiki on the Greek mainland is a wonderful region for exploring. It has excellent sandy beaches, though the sea temperature will be on the chilly side for swimming. Night time temperatures can drop below 10ºC so you’ll need to pack a few layers. There are flights throughout winter to Thessaloniki, the second city of Greece.

Holiday recommendation: stay at IKOS Olivia or IKOS Oceania , both good-value luxury all-inclusive resorts.

Extreme weather in Greece in November

The highest recorded temperature in Greece in November was 33.2ºC (91.8ºF) in 1988, in the town of Kalamata, in the Peloponnese region. Kalamata is known for its beautiful coastline and its big fat juicy delicious olives!

The lowest recorded temperature in Greece in November was -15.0ºC (5.0ºF) in 1967, in the mountainous town of Florina, near the border with North Macedonia.

The driest ever November in Greece was in 2006, with virtually no precipitation reported across the country. The wettest November was in 1969, with a total rainfall of 465.0 mm (18.31 inches).

I spent every summer in Greece as a kid. Here are 7 places to visit that aren't Santorini, Mykonos, or Athens.

• My parents are both Greek, and they took me back to Greece every summer to learn about my roots.
• Thessaloniki is a mainland city with incredible food, beautiful history, and plenty of nightlife. 
• Islands like Corfu and Rhodes will give you amazing beaches without as many tourists.

As a kid, I spent nearly every summer with my family in Greece.

My parents immigrated to California from Greece in the 1980s, but they made sure I grew up learning about our family's roots. We spent almost every summer of my childhood in Greece, where beach days were filled with that perfect turquoise Aegean Sea and big fresh bowls of horiatiki .  

Friends now frequently ask me for advice on their Greece trips, but the only places they ever want to visit are Mykonos, Santorini, and Athens. My answer to them is always the same: You can experience so much of Greece's incredible food, culture, and beaches without setting foot in its packed tourist destinations.

So, with the help of my lovely parents , I've brought you a list of seven incredible spots in Greece that hold some of our favorite memories.

Thessaloniki is a beautiful city packed with great food and incredible history.

Most of my summers in Greece were spent in Thessaloniki, where both of my parents grew up. It's the second biggest city in the country after Athens and dates all the way back to 316 BC. 

Ancient ruins can be seen in the city's downtown area, along with the majestic Byzantine churches. But the most important landmark is the White Tower , which was built in the 15th century after Thessaloniki fell to the Ottomans. The White Tower now has an exhibition on the city's history, and you can go up to the top for spectacular views from its balcony. 

Thessaloniki is also packed with so many delicious tavernas and restaurants that the city landed on Time Magazine's list of "The World's Greatest Places of 2022." My mom recommends visiting the Ladadika neighborhood at the city's center for dinner, or going to Aretsou for views of the water. Try the bougasta — a Greek dessert of custard wrapped in phyllo — or koulouri, Greek sesame bread rings that were my mom's childhood favorite. 

"Walk in the Thessaloniki promenade to enjoy a sunset and, if the sky is clear, a perfect view of Mount Olympus," she added.

I'll let you in on a secret: The best beaches in Greece are actually in Halkidiki.

Sure, Santorini's got those gorgeous white buildings, and Mykonos has the wild nightlife. But if you're looking for an incredible beach vacation, you might be better off on the mainland. 

Even as a kid, I remember being stunned by the beaches in Halkidiki. The sand is soft and white, the water is warm, and the colors of the sea are the brightest blues you'll ever see. One summer my mom and uncle took me to a different beach every day, and she still loves to tell the story of how I gave all the Halkidiki beaches an "A++" because I loved them so much. 

Halkidiki is near Thessaloniki, so it's also a great place to visit if you want to combine a city escape with a beach destination. Plus, with so many local tavernas by the sea, you're sure to have a great meal of octopus, ouzo on the rocks, and some calamari. 

"If all you want for your vacation is to lie on a beach and listen to the waves, Halkidiki is your destination," my mom said. 

A trip to Meteora will give you an unforgettable hike.

Meteora is another childhood trip I'll always remember. Located in central Greece, the Meteora monasteries — now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are perched on huge cliffs that will take your breath away. 

Orthodox Christian hermit monks first began coming to the cliffs of Meteora around the 9th century, looking for peace and isolation. In the 14th century, the first Meteora monastery was built, spearheading the beginning of the site's monastic community, according to Visit Meteora . Six of the 24 monasteries remain active today with more than 60 nuns and monks. 

"It's absolutely amazing to realize that monks built these monasteries and lived there for centuries," my mom said. "The unique rock formations and nice sunsets offer many photo opportunities. It's a really special place that makes me feel close to heaven." 

Delphi is a dream destination for history lovers.

Ancient Greeks believed that Delphi was the "navel of the world." The myth goes that Zeus released one eagle from the east and one from the west and the birds met in the middle at Delphi, where the famous oracle was built. 

In addition to being an incredible archaeological site, Delphi also has a stunning natural backdrop. My mother said she still remembers the sweeping views of the valleys and the lovely olive trees in addition to the incredible ancient ruins. 

"I loved visiting Delphi because of its history, but also because of the beautiful natural surroundings," she added. 

And how could you not be wowed by the birthplace of the Olympics?

For as long as I can remember, the Olympics have been a huge point of pride in our household. My parents always loved reminding me why Greece walks first in the Parade of Nations, and why the Greek flag is always flown during the closing ceremony. 

So as a kid, it was incredibly special to visit Olympia, where the Olympics first began. The games were held in Olympia every four years from 776 BC to 393 AD , and ruins from the sporting events still stand there today. 

"Olympia has always had an emotional impact on me," my mom said. "To be able to walk in the same field where the Olympics started moved me very much when I visited for the first time." 

"I think this would be a special place for someone who loves sports or history," she added. 

Corfu is one of my family's favorite islands in Greece.

I have this distinct memory of seeing beautiful candy-colored houses along the water in Corfu. The stunning city is a great option if you want to visit a beautiful Greek island without fighting hundreds of other tourists for a picture of the sunset. 

Once under Venetian rule, the Italian influence is still apparent in much of Corfu's beautiful architecture and delicious food. Along with stunning beaches, the island is known for its lush flora and fauna. My parents took my sister and me to Corfu when we were kids and said it was a great spot for family vacations. 

My dad also recommends adding a trip to Ioannina on the way to Corfu to visit the stunning Perama Cave. 

Rhodes is a stunning Greek island that feels straight out of the Middle Ages.

Ruled by the Knights of St. John from the 14th to 16th century, Rhodes still feels steeped in medieval history. I remember being wowed as a kid while walking past the majestic castles, under the stone arches, and through the tiny cobblestone alleys on the island's Old Town. 

Rhodes also has plenty of beautiful beaches, as well as Butterfly Valley — my mom's favorite part of the island.
