Frequently Asked Questions

See frequently asked questions about Texas A&M University's engineering program in Galveston.

1. How are the general engineering programs in Galveston and College Station related?

The Texas A&M College of Engineering is a single unit that offers the first-year curriculum at multiple locations, including College Station, Galveston and McAllen. The good news is that no matter which location you begin your academic career at, you are a Fightin’ Texas Aggie!

2. How do I apply to the Engineering at Galveston program?

Students interested in the Engineering at Galveston program have two options to apply:

  • Option 1: Students should submit the traditional freshman application to Texas A&M University — Galveston, available at goapplytexas.org . And select one of the following College of Engineering majors offered in Galveston: computer science, interdisciplinary engineering, multidisciplinary engineering technology or ocean engineering.
  • Option 2: Students should submit the traditional freshman application to Texas A&M University — College Station, available at goapplytexas.org . It is recommended to indicate Galveston as your preferred location and to select one of the following majors: computer science, interdisciplinary engineering, multidisciplinary engineering technology or ocean engineering. This will ensure you are given full consideration for the Engineering at Galveston program. For detailed instructions, visit Applying to Galveston .

3. What are the advantages of beginning my engineering education on the Galveston campus of Texas A&M University?

  • With less than 2,500 students, the Galveston campus offers a small campus atmosphere. This means smaller class sizes, easier access to faculty and the ability to develop an academic community with your peers. In addition, the quiet nature of campus is conducive to studying and academic success.
  • Beginning your education on the Gulf Coast offers a unique experience to which students in College Station don’t have access. From the beaches, to the many island festivals, to Galveston’s night life, our students find many ways to balance their academic and social lives.
  • Galveston is the ideal setting to study ocean- and marine-oriented disciplines. Students who choose to complete their four-year engineering degree at Galveston will experience the perfect location for studying all aspects of engineering that deal with the ocean, ships and the coast.

4. If I begin my engineering education on the Galveston campus, what is the process for entering into a degree-granting engineering major?

The Entry to a Major (ETAM) process is the same for all students regardless of where they begin their engineering education. Once students successfully meet the minimum ETAM requirements, they apply to at least three of the 20+ majors offered in the College of Engineering, and they also have the option to specify a location. Once accepted into a major, students move to the location where that major is offered. More information about the ETAM process can be found on the ETAM website .

5. Can I complete my full degree on the Galveston campus? What majors are offered?

In addition to the four-year degree programs offered at the College Station campus, general engineering students can also choose to complete their four-year engineering degree on the Galveston campus. At Galveston, there are currently four engineering degrees being offered that take advantage of the campus’s unique setting on the Gulf of Mexico. These include:

  • Computer Science
  • Ocean Engineering
  • Interdisciplinary Engineering: Engineering for Marine Environments
  • Multidisciplinary Engineering Technology: Electro Marine Engineering Technology

You will hear more about these programs at your New Student Conference and will be given the opportunity to explore all of them during your first year. Regardless of where you complete your degree, you will earn the same Texas A&M University diploma and the same Texas A&M Aggie Ring!

6. Will the General Engineering program on the Galveston campus prepare me for my intended engineering major?

Regardless of location, students in general engineering complete three foundational engineering courses. These are taught by faculty from the Texas A&M College of Engineering and are overseen by the general engineering program in College Station. In addition, all students in general engineering complete several rigorous math and science courses taught by Texas A&M faculty that have been reviewed and aligned for content by their respective departments in College Station. In summary, the general engineering curriculum is designed to prepare you for success in your intended major!

7. Will I have access to student organizations, research opportunities, etc. on the Galveston campus?

While your first year in engineering will be challenging, and success in academics should be your top priority, we recognize the importance of pursuing extracurricular activities that enhance your education. The Galveston campus offers opportunities with multiple technical student organizations including Student Government Association, Society of Women Engineers, and Marine Technology Society to name a few. In addition, there are numerous faculty members pursuing research both in engineering and in other departments on campus. Interested students often find research opportunities working in their labs. In terms of student employment, there are lots of on-campus job opportunities for students as well.

8. Am I required to take a math placement exam? What is this exam and how can I prepare for it?

The College of Engineering requires that all students take the Math Placement Exam (MPE) prior to attending a New Student Conference. The MPE tests students on their knowledge of pre-calculus and determines which math course they will enroll in during their first semester at Texas A&M. It is important that all students follow the guidance of the MPE, since proficiency in mathematics is a key factor to your success in an engineering program. To find out more about the MPE and how to prepare, visit the MPE website .

2026 5-Star LB Anthony Jones Sets Visit Texas A&M

Aaron raley | jun 7, 2024.

texas a&m galveston college visit

The defensive prospects just can't stop making trips to Aggieland .

Anthony Jones, a 5-star linebacker in the class of 2026 from St. Paul's Episcopal in Mobile, AL, is scheduled to visit Texas A&M later this month on the 15th, per On3's Chad Simmons.

Jones has a 96.22 rating according to On3, and in addition to A&M, has offers from the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, LSU Tigers, and Georgia Bulldogs. For high school football fanatics, this should not come as any sort of surprise.

As it stands, Jones is ranked as a five-star recruit, the No. 8 player nationally, the No. 1 edge, and the No. 1 player in the state of Alabama per the On3 Industry ranking, which is a composite ranking of the four major recruiting services. He is currently seen by the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine as a 28.7 percent lean to Alabama. He has also been to Auburn three times on visits or attending camps since the start of February.

Jones has been reeling in the offers as of late as well, picking them up from Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Clemson, and LSU all since May 1.

In Jones' freshman year in 2022, he was a quarterback's nightmare. He racked up 130 tackles, 15 sacks, two interceptions (one of them a pick-six), and also was a reliable source on offense, catching three touchdown passes while playing both sides of the ball.

So in an Aggie defense that will be looking to fill in some holes over the next few years, Jones seems to be a perfect match in the aggressive defensive style.

texas a&m galveston college visit

With much of the focus surrounding offseason football recruiting and college baseball, Texas A&M’s basketball program has some work to do this summer on the recruiting trail, as head coach Buzz Williams has two commitments in the cycle so far.

With four-star point guard Andre Mills and four-star forward George Turkson representing the class, it has been reported that former Oklahoma State commit and point guard Jeremiah Johnson recently took a visit to College Station last week according to 24/7 High School Hoops.

A proven two-way guard with the ability to take over a game at any moment, Johnson’s 6-4, 160-plus pound frame doesn’t jump off the screen, but his play usually answers any lingering worries.

During his season with the Overtime Elite Diamond Doves, Johnson averaged 18.3 points per contest as the go-to option in nearly every position on the floor. In need of pure scoring guards to eventually take over for incoming senior guard Wade Taylor IV , Johnson, paired with Andre Mills could make for a dynamic backcourt duo.

According to 247Sports, Johnson is currently positioned as the 13th-ranked point guard in the 2024 class and the eighth-ranked prospect in Arizona.

College football's powers flex their muscles on recruiting trail this weekend: Texas, Michigan host five-stars

Fans of alabama, georgia, michigan, south carolina (gulp), tennessee, texas and utah have a lot on the line during the june 14-16 official visit weekend.

dakorienmoore.jpg

The month of June has been a blast, albeit an exhausting one,  on the college football recruiting calendar . Last weekend the nation's top players did their thing at Overtime OT7 Finals in Florida . Next week, the Class of 2025's top quarterbacks trek to Los Angeles for the 2024 Elite 11 Finals .

In between all of that, major visits are popping off across college campuses from coast to coast as schools position themselves for the July flurry of commitments ( before the commitments come , we get the visits).

The team of recruiting experts from 247Sports, the industry leader in college football recruiting coverage, has selected the one visit or storyline they have their eye on this Father's Day weekend.

Alabama making waves with No. 6 TE

Kaleb edwards visits capstone for second time.

" Alabama has a big weekend with players coming from all over the country, but one of the nation's best tight ends will attend after being in the state earlier this week. El Dorado Hills (Calif.) Oak Ridge tight end Kaleb Edwards was at Texas last weekend, took a midweek trip to Auburn earlier this week and will now be in Tuscaloosa for his official visit. The Tide offered the Class of 2025's No. 6 tight end when he was there in April for the A-Day Game, but the relationship with head coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan goes back to when they were among the first to offer Edwards while at Washington . Bryan Ellis , the Tide tight ends coach, is also involved in his recruitment. But the offer from DeBoer and Sheridan -- and the presence of Edwards' neighbor, Austin Mack , in the Tide program -- has Alabama in a significant position heading in to the visit." — Brandon Huffman, 247Sports

Georgia in big battle with ... Duke ?

Make-or-break weekend for top 100 dl .

"Georgia has a huge visit on deck with Greensboro (N.C.) Grimsley Top100 defensive lineman  Bryce Davis  coming to campus. I know, I know. Everyone has been penciling the 6-foot-3, 245-pounder into  Georgia's 2025 class  for quite some time, but I genuinely believe that his interest in  Duke  is very real -- and the Blue Devils' coaching staff couldn't have made a better impression on the in-state native during last week's official visit. I'm told that there are some in the Davis household who prefer Manny Diaz's Duke program to any other, but there is no denying his love for Georgia football. Keep an eye on  Clemson  as well. The Tigers are a legitimate contender. However, this weekend will be extremely important and likely results in either his addition to the Bulldogs' commitment list or it becomes the moment where the nation's  No. 63 overall player  realizes that he wants to be a Blue Devil, or maybe even a Tiger."  — Tom Loy, 247Sports

Michigan hopes to shift buzz with 5-star OT

Wolverines tout academics in duel with stanford.

"Overland Park (Kan.) Blue Valley Northwest five-star offensive tackle  Andrew Babalola  heads to  Michigan  this weekend. There is legitimate buzz in  Stanford 's favor following last weekend's official to Palo Alto. Michigan now has its turn, and the Wolverines may be the school that has the best shot to shift that buzz. They have academics to offer, which is  important  in this decision, and offensive line development with head coach  Sherrone Moore  and offensive line coach  Grant Newsome  able to tag team the recruitment. Michigan has also done well in that area, landing players like former Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst four-star offensive tackle  Andrew Sprague  a year ago. The  Wolverines began the weekend with a bang, reeling in blue-chip safety Kainoa Winston and bumping their class ranking up from No. 51 to No. 40. Can they keep the good vibes going?"  — Allen Trieu, 247Sports

South Carolina on 'decommit watch'

Gamecocks in danger of losing top '25 pledge.

"We're going slightly against the prompt of "big visitor to watch this weekend," because for the Gamecocks, this weekend could inadvertently be defined by who's on somebody else's campus. Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale four-star cornerback Shamari Earls is the highest-ranked player committed to South Carolina , but he shifted his official visit schedule and it no longer includes the Gamecocks. He will be at Michigan this weekend, make a June 20 trip to Virginia (coinciding with his high school team camping at UVA) and visit Georgia from June 21-23. Earls said that he remains committed to the Gamecocks, but it may be only a matter of time before he is in another program's class. The concern for South Carolina is not limited to Earls officially visiting Georgia during the last open window in June instead of the Gamecocks. He was supposed to officially visit South Carolina May 31-June 2, but it was moved back so that the Gamecocks could get him before the summer dead period began." — Brian Dohn, 247Sports

Tennessee can crash two-team party for 5-star EDGE

Vols gaining steam in fierce chase for isaiah gibson.

"Warner Robins (Ga.) High five-star edge rusher  Isaiah Gibson  will take an official visit to  Tennessee  this weekend. The nation's  No. 1 edge rusher  has been committed to  USC  since March, but Gibson continues to test the market.  Georgia , which hosted him on an official visit the weekend of May 31, has widely been viewed as the Trojans' greatest threat. 247Sports  reported  last month that Tennessee, however, is making a charge at USC and Georgia as chief competition. The Vols most recently hosted Gibson in April and subsequently got added to the calendar for this weekend. Gibson expects to carry his recruitment into the fall, but Tennessee can stamp its position as a top-tier suitor with a knockout official visit this weekend."  — Anna Adams, 247Sports

Texas hosts Dakorien Moore, nation's best WR

Are longhorns the sure-fire favorite for moore.

"Sticking with the five-star theme, I'll go with the nation's No. 1 receiver Dakorien Moore . While it's true that I could probably list the Duncanville (Texas) target every week, this week feels especially big. His recruitment seems to have a new twist by the week after decommitting from LSU in May before visiting Ohio State and returning to Baton Rouge. The Tigers are now back in the picture, but Texas is the school that drew the most buzz when Moore originally opened his recruitment. It's no secret that Texas has several built-in advantages with Moore as his mother was born in Austin and he still has family in the area. There's been a lot of confidence coming out of the Texas program that they can eventually close the deal and add the elite prospect to one of the nation's best wide receiver rooms and the Longhorns have all three of the Crystal Ball predictions for Moore in their favor. Though an Oregon visit still looms next week, this feels like a huge moment for everyone involved." — Mike Roach, 247Sports

Utah looks to make noise with one-time 'silent' 5-star commit

Ole miss commit jerome myles has big visit planned in slc.

" Utah  held a silent commitment from five-star, in-state wide receiver  Jerome Myles  until he took a resonant official visit to  Ole Miss  in April, committing to the Rebels then. Things have been slow since then, but this weekend the Utes get a chance to rebound for the playmaker from Draper Corner Canyon. The connections in Salt Lake City are already profound, and the expectation is that freshman quarterback  Isaac Wilson  -- his former high school and club 7-on-7 teammate -- will be the player-host for Myles throughout the weekend as the Utes hope to convince the uber talented pass-catcher to stay close to home. Myles also has lined up trips to Texas A&M (June 21) and Michigan (July 26) as other contenders battle to make up ground on Ole Miss, but Utah gets the first opportunity to close the gap."  — Blair Angulo, 247Sports

Lsu to host no. 1 safety in america for visit this weekend, share this article.

LSU already has a 2025 recruiting class that ranks as high as No. 2 nationally, and coach Brian Kelly is trying to make that group even stronger.

The Tigers will play host this weekend to one of the top defensive backs in the cycle as five-star Jonah Williams , the No. 1 safety in the country, will be in town for an official visit.

Williams ranks as the No. 10 player in the nation overall, and the Ball (Galveston, Tex.) product recently took an official visit to Texas A&M . Though he has visits set with Ohio State and Oregon as well later this month, he received a crystal ball prediction in favor of the Aggies after that trip.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma is considered the favorite per On3.

#LSU will host the No. 1 safety in America for an official visit this weekend: Jonah Williams. The coveted prospect will arrive on Friday to begin his multi-day stay. Williams is also one of the top baseball players in Texas. Now, Brian Kelly and Jay Johnson will get to work. pic.twitter.com/b8paJWmYpt — Zack Nagy (@znagy20) June 14, 2024

Williams is a two-way star, playing receiver and all over the defense. He also plays baseball for his high school as an outfielder and left-handed pitcher.

LSU already holds commitments from two of the top players at their position: quarterback Bryce Underwood , who is also the No. 1 overall prospect, and running back Harlem Berry . If it could land a player like Williams, the Tigers could jump back to the top spot in the class rankings.

Degree Programs

Students at the Galveston campus of Texas A&M University will invariably tell you that the best thing about TAMUG is the small school environment – classes are small and students know their professors and classmates. TAMUG is an ocean-oriented campus offering academic degrees, research, continuing education and public service in  sciences, engineering, business, transportation and liberal arts. Because TAMUG is a branch campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, students receive their degrees, and the Aggie Ring , from Texas A&M University. Texas A&M University at Galveston also includes the Texas A&M Maritime Academy , one of six state maritime training academies in the United States and the only one located on the Gulf of Mexico.
