CARNIFEX Announce "Necromanteum Part II" North American Tour With CRYPTOPSY

Deathcore juggernaut, Carnifex, released their latest album, Necromanteum, last fall followed by a US run in support of the new music.

Continuing the momentum, the band have announced their "Necromanteum Part II" North American tour with labelmates Cryptopsy. The 26-date trek will commence on October 4 at The Glasshouse in Pomona and will make stops in Portland, Cleveland, and will include nine Canadian dates before ending on November 3 in Reno, Nevada. Opening each night are Mental Cruelty, Organectomy, and Heavy Hitter.

Carnifex's Scott Ian Lewis states, "We couldn’t be happier to bring the Necromanteum tour to Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and the Midwest. The line-up is stacked top to bottom and we will have an exceptional set list of fan favorites and deep cuts. Do not miss these shows, it’ll be a great time. See you on the road!”

Cryptopsy's Matt McGachy comments, "Get ready for an epic tour across Canada and the United States! We are thrilled to be teaming up with Carnifex to rip across places that we have not played in years. Prepare yourselves for a mind-blowing fusion of death metal mastery as we smash you with our signature blend of technical prowess and ferocity to the stage, while Carnifex delivers their bone-crushing riffs and intense energy that will leave you breathless. This entire lineup is insane, and can not wait to blast you all away.  So mark your calendars and spread the word because Cryptopsy and Carnifex are coming to a city near you!"

CARNIFEX Announces 'Necromanteum' Album

CARNIFEX will release its ninth full-length studio album, "Necromanteum" , on October 6 via Nuclear Blast Records .

After existing as a band for over 18 years, CARNIFEX continues to experiment with fresh song arrangements, adding a unique sense of atmosphere to its inherently deathcore foundation.

Decades ago, wealthy intellectuals began installing psychomanteum in their homes; a secret room completely filled with mirrors, or a single mirror, and in complete darkness, in order to speak to the dead in other dimensions, and gain their knowledge. It was often used as a healing tool to help dissolve grief, or considered a form of prophecy. "Necromanteum" presents the concept: what if you could use that kind of room to speak with death, itself? What secrets of the world could you uncover from a direct conversation with the grim reaper? Not a monster, but a fellow intellect.

Today, the band releases the title track "Necromanteum" which broaches on these existential topics. Watch the music video, directed by Jim Louvau and Tony Aguilera , below.

CARNIFEX 's Scott Ian Lewis comments: " 'Necromanteum' is a truly special album that all of us in the band already love. Spend some time in conversation with the other side of life, enter the 'Necromanteum' …"

The recording process for "Necromanteum" took place over the course of several weeks with producer Jason Suecof in Florida, and saw the return of live drums since COVID-19 restrictions made doing so on "Graveside Confessions" impossible. Mastered by Mark Lewis in Nashville, Tennessee, the album was also co-produced by vocalist Scott Ian Lewis and drummer Shawn Cameron . The cover artwork glows with an emerald and lavender fog; a ghostly energy erupting from the depths of a cemetery. Designed by renowned comic book artist E.M. Gist , this gateway represents the questions we ask about what lies on the other side of reality.

"Necromanteum" track listing:

01. Torn In Two 02. Death's Forgotten Children 03. Necromanteum 04. Crowned In Everblack 05. The Pathless Forest 06. How The Knife Gets Twisted 07. Architect Of Misanthropy 08. Infinite Night Terror 09. Bleed More 10. Heaven And Hell All At Once

2023 has certainly been a calendar year for deathcore; Chelsea Grin , To The Grave , Signs of the Swarm , Crown Magnetar and Suicide Silence have all synced up and dropped excellent new releases upon the extreme music faithful. Hopefully fans of blastbeats and breakdowns have room for another course, with San Diegans’ – and classic deathcore five-piece – Carnifex preparing a new collection of blackened brutality. One of the most prolific artists in the deathcore scene – only The Acacia Strain have dropped more studio albums –   Carnifex have returned after 2021’s solid-yet-unremarkable Graveside Confessions with LP number 9, Necromanteum.

It’s hard to get a more classic deathcore opener than ‘ Torn In Two ‘. Having been previewed live on the road some months before Necromanteum ’s unveiling, the tune has all the iconic Carnifex hallmarks; beefy riffs, rampaging drums, minor-key blackened elements and Scott Ian’s throat-tearing screams and roars. As one of the group’s who were at the absolute forefront of the melding of elements of black metal into deathcore, Carnifex are clearly doubling down on all the elements that have gotten them to where they are today.

‘ Death’s Forgotten Children ‘ – featuring Chelsea Grin ’s Tom Barber – is another OG deathcore tune, housing one of the LP’s filthiest breakdowns, while the following title track is a instantly-catchy blackened assault with a great melodic guitar line holding the song together. Returning to a five piece after recording their previous effort as a quartet, the recruitment of former DevilDriver guitarist Neil Tiemann is a major-plus – with the debutant bringing both melodic and technical flair to the lead guitar passages. On the production front, working with both Jason Suecof and Mark Lewis again makes for a powerful, crisp sounding record – the symphonic elements in particular are better than ever; ‘ How The Knife Gets Twisted ’s chorus sounds epic with the huge orchestral backing.

Necromanteum ’s balance of brutality and blackened aspects is excellent, with the release becoming more grim and evil as it progresses. ‘ Crowned In Everblack ‘ has a fantastic bridge, delving deep into dynamics oft-explored by Carnifex, while the crushing duo of ‘ The Pathless Forest ‘ and ‘ Infinite Night Terror ‘ are equally rich in strong songwriting and skin peeling extremity. The album’s finale ‘ Heaven And Hell All At Once ‘ is an excellent sendoff – Tiemann gets a great solo spot amongst the chest beating riffs, pounding drum work and soaring strings.

An improvement on 2021’s Graveside Confessions , Necromanteum ranks amongst the most satisfying releases in Carnifex ’s back catalogue. A band who’s albums feel generally too top heavy, with the finest material loaded at the front, this ninth full length is arguably Carnifex ’s most consistent record to date, and will undoubtedly be a major success amongst their fanbase. Necromanteum is an excellent, inspired sounding effort, and as Carnifex nears two decades in the game, serves as a testament to a group who are hungry to run with their peers and school the multitude of acts they’ve influenced.

ALBUM REVIEW: Necromanteum – Carnifex

With the growing popularity of deathcore bands introducing blackened elements, you could be forgiven for thinking that this style is a new creation – something unique that this modern crop of bands has created in the past few years. However, you would in fact be VERY wrong about that. San Diego natives CARNIFEX have been perfecting the aforementioned sound since their debut album Dead In My Arms more that 16 years ago. The boys have been criminally overlooked time and time again yet continue to pave the way for the younger bands that follow in their creative wake, and now they return with their ninth full-length album Necromanteum .

The album begins with Torn In Two and is exactly what you would imagine. A volley of double bass drumming, frantic riffs, and eerie synths with the famous vocal acrobatics of Scott Lewis soaring over the top. This is the sound of a band showing no sign of slowing down or giving any mercy. The rhythm section of drummer Shawn Cameron and bassist Fred Calderon sounds as tight as ever and the lead guitars from Cory Arford and Neal Tiemann sound fresh and exciting.

The pace doesn’t slow up for Death’s Forgotten Children which features a ferocious guest spot from CHELSEA GRIN ’s own Tom Barber . The evil delivery from Lewis twins perfectly with the guest vocalist and creates one of the heaviest breakdowns you are likely to hear this year. The title track carries on very much in the same vein with the ethereal vocals in the background and symphonic elements adding another level to the already grandiose sound. The band are really firing on all cylinders by this point of the album and are proving at this early stage of the record why they are one of the titans of the scene.

The Pathless Forest is one of the real high points of the album. The bludgeoning, machine gun fire of the double bass at the beginning gives way to one of the most punishing tracks on the whole release. Once again Lewis proves that he is one of the most consistently brilliant vocalists in the game, shifting from obscene gutturals to shrill banshee-like highs at the drop of a hat. How The Knife Gets Twisted then carries on in very much the same vein, with Cameron once again playing the role of MVP with his insanely technical drum work pushing the entire song forward.

Towards the back end of the album there isn’t even a whiff of reprieve for the listener. Infinite Night Terror is an attack on the senses with the heavy chugging over the top of the breakneck drumming, with the riffs being some of the most memorable of the whole album. The atmospherics once again siphon in a taste of melody, but even they do little to ease the absolute devastation that this sort of aggression causes to the eardrums of the audience.

The closing track Heaven And Hell All At Once ensures that the album doesn’t go out with a whimper. The harmonised guitars in the introduction between Arford and Tiemann sound fantastic and perfectly showcase the possibilities that have reopened for the band now that they have stepped back up to being a five-piece. The solo towards the only serves to hammer that point home and put the perfect cap on one of the band’s most solid and accomplished albums to date.

There are some who criticise bands for staying their course and re-treading the same ground. However, with a group like CARNIFEX , each time they venture out they manage to make things sound fresh and exciting without straying too far from their tried and tested formula. Necromanteum is a marked improvement on the band’s previous effort Graveside Confessions , which was by no means a poor album, but felt like it ran a little too long and dragged a bit towards the end. It’s safe to say that CARNIFEX sound like more of a complete unit this time around and the addition of another creative songwriter to the mix has done the lads wonders.

Rating: 8/10

As the fifth-largest German city, Frankfurt is the perfect place to get the right dose of history, culture, beauty and lots of delicious food. If you’re looking to plan a 2 to 3 days in Frankfurt itinerary, we’ve got an excellent resource for you.

So let’s eat some high-quality frankfurters while we explore the “Mainhattan” of Germany along the Main River and experience all that Frankfurt has to offer. Let’s dive into your next adventure in Germany.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Frankfurt?

As one of the biggest financial and flight hubs, you may have had a layover or transfer in Frankfurt before. However, the city has so much to offer that it deserves its own trip to explore the city properly. But you might be wondering how many days to spend in Frankfurt to do the city justice.

There is so much to see and you probably don’t have a lot of time to spare, but luckily most attractions are within walking distance from each other.

2 days in Frankfurt is the perfect amount of time to see all the main highlights with some additional adventures that will leave you feeling like you got the full city experience.

However, with 3 days, you can explore some parts of the town that the locals enjoy as well, for example, a visit to the city forest or down the scenic Berger Straße. Alternatively, enjoy additional world-class museums and finish the day with a visit to the English Theatre.

Modern Frankfurt

Getting To & Around Frankfurt

No matter your preferred mode of transportation, Frankfurt is easily accessible whether you’re flying, driving or catching a ride some other way.

You can reach Frankfurt from many European cities like Copenhagen , Hamburg , Berlin or Munich by train. Frankfurt Train Station is located in the centre of the city and you can walk to many points of interest from there. You can view train schedules here .

For those flying in, Frankfurt Airport is the closest airport. Of course, other alternatives include airports in Hahn (which is usually the Frankfurt airport of choice for budget airlines), Cologne , Stuttgart and Dortmund, although the latter airports are over 2 hours away.

Once you arrive at the airport, you can decide on riding a train, bus, renting a car or a private transfer to get you to the city centre. It is a roughly 20-minute ride to get there.

If you are planning to use public transportation, it is straightforward and easy to navigate in Germany. You’ll have to get either a single-ride ticket or a Frankfurt Card at the train or bus station.

The Frankfurt Card has the added bonus in addition to the unlimited public transportation, that you’ll receive free entry or discounted prices at main attractions and restaurants in Frankfurt.

Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof

2 to 3-Day Frankfurt Itinerary

With the highest population in the state of Hesse, Frankfurt has seen countless visitors from every corner of the world. The city has endured so many centuries of historical events, war after war it has been rebuilt to bring together the old and new parts of the city to become what you’ll see today.

If you want to see some of the below sites with a guide, you can book a guided walking tour here.

Day 1 – Innenstadt, Old Town & New Old Town

In a city filled with old and new stories, you can find numerous things to do. For those interested in finance, Frankfurt can feel like a scavenger hunt as you look for significant landmarks, like the Euro sculpture or the famous Bull and Bear in front of the city’s stock exchange.

Your journey will begin at the Euro-Skulptur on Willy-Brandt-Platz and after having a look at the sculpture you’ll head up to the Alte Oper.

Starting in the Innenstadt, or inner city, you’ll begin the first day of your Frankfurt itinerary with the impressive concert hall known as the Alte Oper.

The Old Opera House was originally built in 1880 but after getting bombed and destroyed in 1944, it had to be rebuilt. The new larger hall opened its doors again in 1981.

Right in front of the opera house, you’ll find the Opernplatz (Opera Square), where you have a great view of the Alte Oper and tall buildings in the Bankenviertel (Banking District). The classical opera building contrasts sharply with the metal and glass of the downtown skyscrapers, making this a very unique square.

As you make your way deeper into the inner city towards the Hauptwache, you’ll walk passed numerous restaurants and luxury shopping stores.

If you take a little detour you’ll come across the Eschenheimer Turm, the late Gothic tower that used to serve as the city gate and is now a landmark. Our next stop is the Hauptwache.

Frankfurt Opera House

You’ll know when you reach the Hauptwache not only because you’ll spot St. Catherine’s Church and the magnificent skyline but seeing one of the most famous plazas in all its glory can stop you in your tracks.

The Hauptwache building used to be a prison that was later turned into a police station and is now a restaurant that serves traditional German dishes.

In the plaza, you’ll see the big Galeria Kaufhof, the largest department store in the city, that houses many well-known brands, shops and more.

You can take a lift or stairs up to the roof terrace in the building to get a stunning view of Frankfurt. While worth a quick peak, don’t spend too much time here admiring the view – you’ll get an even better bird’s eye perspective later on in the day.

For now, enjoy walking down the famous and fabulous Zeil Street that’s lined with shops of all sorts. If you’re looking to do some shopping, for yourself or for souvenirs, here is your chance.

Hauptwache

Kleinmarkthalle

When you’re done with your shopping, you’ll walk back towards the Hauptwache to the cute and historic Kleinmarkthalle.

Named for being a small market hall, the market is open every day except for Sundays. You’ll find all kinds of fresh food and flowers, as well as specialities from the area and even international delicacies. The market has been around since 1954 and has welcomed visitors and Frankfurters alike.

For the larger Erzeugermarkt Konstablerwache, located a few minutes away, you will have to double-check open times but you should be able to stroll through it on Thursdays and Saturdays.

As one of the most iconic German attractions, the Römerberg or Roman Mountain has seen its fair share of coronations, Christmas markets and tourists from all around the globe. Don’t worry though, the name is a bit misleading since the Römerberg is not really a mountain.

Located in the heart of Frankfurt’s Altstadt (the old town of the city), The Römer has been the city hall of Frankfurt since the 15th century and although receiving much damage during World World II, luckily the beautiful buildings were restored for people to enjoy today.

The half-timbered houses showcase beautiful German craftsmanship and are an iconic scene in Frankfurt.

Frankfurt Old Town

DomRömer Quarter

Just a few steps away, you’ll come across a slight contrast to the historic old town in the “new old town” known as the DomRömer Quarter.

At first glance, the quarter looks very similar to the Römerberg, with a statue in front of the unique buildings. But then you see the contrast in colour and the modern build of the stunning buildings and realise you’re not in the same quarter anymore.

Since the war destroyed a large part of the old town, the reconstruction of the DomRömer Quarter, which was completed in 2018, was meant to modernise and liven Frankfurt up a bit.

St Paul’s Church

As you make your way from the Altstadt towards the Innenstadt, you’ll spot the round, architectural beauty of St Paul’s Church.

Having been the gathering place of the first freely elected German Parliament in 1848, the church is a unique spot with great historical significance for Germany.

Today you can tour the building, walk the circular lower floor, read about Germany’s history, and admire the beautiful art on the walls.

Goethe House and Museum

Just a short 5-minute walk from St Paul’s Church, you’ll see the marvellous Goethe House. This is the birthplace and former home of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of Germany’s most famous writers who had a major impact on the German language – similar to what Shakespeare did for the English language.

The house became a museum in 1863 after being restored by the new owner to the way it was when Goethe was living there. Although it was destroyed during World War II, the house was reconstructed to its original form afterwards.

When you walk through the rooms where Goethe wrote some of his most famous pieces, you’ll walk along furniture from that period and can imagine what it was like living in the 18th century. In the museum, adjacent to the house, you’ll find a display of paintings that show Goethe’s life while in his family home.

Goethe house in Frankfurt

To end your first day in Frankfurt, we’re going to end on a literal high note at the highest public viewing platform in the city – the Main Tower.

Even from ground level the 56-story blue glass skyscraper is extraordinary – it is the fourth tallest building in the city. For 9 euros per adult, visitors can take a lift up the 190 meters (623 feet) of the building to the observation deck but will have to walk up the last 10 meters of the way.

The last bit of walking is totally worth it when you reach the platform and have a breathtaking panoramic view of Frankfurt. If you time it out nicely, you can savour an amazing sunset.

Day 2 – Sachsenhausen & Plamengarten

On the second day, you’ll begin south of the Main river and across the Eiserner Steg (Iron Footbridge), on the other side of the city in old Sachsenhausen.

Straight out of a Brothers Grimm fairytale book with its medieval-looking houses, gas lamps and cobbled stone streets, this part of Frankfurt feels like an untouched, traditional German town. As you leisurely roam through the town, keep an eye out for brass-coloured apples within the cobblestones.

The state of Hesse prides itself on its Apfelwein production and history, so much so that apple wine – or cider – is considered the state beverage.

You’ll find some popular restaurants and taverns that serve it in Sachsenhausen, so if you’re feeling thirsty you can indulge in a glass or two of the local beverage of choice of over 250 years.

Museumsufer

If you’re a museum fanatic, look no further because you’ll find a nice lineup of museums right by the Main river in the area called Museumsufer or Museum Embankment.

The idea of building museums close to each other came from a cultural politician in 1977 named Hilmar Hoffmann.

On the South Bank of the river, you’ll find The Städel at the centre, which displays 700 years of European art and is one of the oldest museums in Germany. On the North Bank, museums include the Jewish Museum Frankfurt, the Historical Museum and other art museums.

Now we’ll cross the Alte Brücke once again, from the south bank to the north to walk along the Mainkai, the promenade alongside the river, and stop to take in the incredible view of the city’s skyline, river, Eiserner Steg and all of Frankfurt’s beauty.

Städel in Frankfurt

Frankfurt Cathedral

As you make your way east on the Mainkai, then up Zum Pfarrturm, on the right pass the Dommuseum, you’ll reach the magnificent red gothic Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew, most commonly referred to as Frankfurt Cathedral or Dom.

Although it was never used as an actual cathedral, it was significant for holding former coronations and elections during the Roman Empire times.

Today, visitors can climb 328 steps to the viewing platform to get a different view from the city, closer to the river and old town. Inside, you can roam through the historical treasures and stories of its history.

Frankfurt Cathedral

Frankfurter Judengasse

After the cathedral, you’ll head up towards Domstraße and continue on Braubachstraße then Battonnstraße to reach the Museum Judengasse.

Frankfurt has two interesting and popular museums dedicated to Jewish history. The Jewish Museum is one of the oldest in Germany and is located down the Mainkai in the North Bank.

But today, you’ll take a closer look at the Judengasse, which was the location of the Jewish ghetto around 1462 to 1811. After enduring damage during the war, it was later demolished and rebuilt around 1987.

The museum opened in 1992 and you can still see a section of the original foundations. You’ll learn more about life during that time, Jewish history in the country and get to see historical art pieces while touring the museum.

Palmengarten

For an afternoon treat, you will either walk 35 minutes from the Judengasse or take a direct bus from Börneplatz to the enchanting Palmengarten.

The Palm Garden is a beloved attraction for everyone, not just tourists. Frankfurt loves its botanical gardens so much that it has three palm gardens in the city.

Close to the entrance of the garden, you will walk through a gorgeous rose garden, where you can stop and smell the luscious rosy fragrance in the air. Next, the garden houses a stunning palm house with tall palm trees, cacti, and other subtropical wonders.

With so much to look at, you can get lost for hours discovering new plants all over the grounds of the garden.

Palmengarten

Day 3 – Stadtwald, Modern Art Museum, Berger Straße & the English Theatre

By now you’ve seen the main highlights in the city but there is so much more to do and see. Keep on reading for fun activities to do on your third day in Frankfurt.

If you prefer to head out of the city, you can take a day trip to Heidelberg instead.

As a day trip or if you’re headed back towards the airport, around the halfway point you can spend a few hours strolling around the Stadtwald (Frankfurt City Forest), which is around a 30-minute train ride outside of the city.

You’ll get to experience Frankfurt’s wildlife while walking by ponds and other bodies of water in the serene forest. To end your trip, you can go up the Goethe Tower in the northern part of the forest to have one last look at the breathtaking Frankfurt skyline from a distance.

Museum für Moderne Kunst

By now you’ve seen the main highlights in the city so you can sit back and relax – for example on a river cruise down the Main river – you can book one here .

While you’re near the river, you can go for a second round of museum exploration and visit one or two of the other museums on the Museumsufer that you’re interested in.

For example, the Museum of Modern Art displays unique pieces of art from the 1960s to the present date. You can find collections and individual artwork of artists from around the world, including Germany. If modern art is not for you, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Berger Straße

If you’re looking to explore the city more, you can walk down Berger Straße, your start point will begin at the cute clock tower, also known as the Uhr Turmchen.

Here you will find traditional German restaurants and special desserts like spaghettieis (don’t worry, it tastes better than it sounds and it contains zero tomato sauce or pasta).

On the Upper Berger Straße, you’ll also find more traditional apple wine gardens in dark wood buildings where you can get a glass of wine directly from the cellars where it’s made.

English Theatre

For an evening out you can enjoy whatever show is currently being held at the English Theatre in Frankfurt.

The theatre opened in 1979 and is well-known for ranking as the largest English-speaking theatre in Europe. When they aren’t performing musicals, they are performing anything from comedies and classics to thrillers.

Can I Take a Day Trip To These Castles from Frankfurt?

Yes! In fact, these castles make for the perfect day trip from Frankfurt because of their proximity to the city. So you can easily add day one or more day trips to your itinerary. The best castle for a quick and easy day trip would be Saalburg Roman Fort since it’s just a 30-minute drive away from Frankfurt.

Most of the other castles are over an hour drive away which are great if you have more free time in your itinerary. You can also look into guided tours that take care of transportation and logistics to make your day trip hassle-free, like this guided day trip from Frankfurt to Eltz Castle.

Can I Sleep in a Castle Near Frankfurt?

Though many of us would love to experience sleeping like royals in a castle, it’s not as common of an option as you may imagine. Many of these castles serve as museums or exhibits that showcase the castles’ rich history and background. Some of them are also still under the ownership of the founding families so they’re used as summer residences or private estates.

Because of this, sleeping in a castle is not really an option that’s easily available — with some rare exceptions . For example, the castle in Bacharach has been turned into a youth hostel! If you book well in advance, you can have the unique experience of sleeping in a German castle. Yes, it’s a youth hostel but hostels in Germany tend to be pretty nice (albeit basic) and family oriented.

The castle in Bacharach is on a hill overlooking the village of Bacharach below and has AMAZING views of the river Rhine below. You can drive up the hill to hostel entrance or hike up from the town (and train station) below. Even if you don’t stay there I highly recommend hiking up to the castle for the view (it is a hike up a hill but it’s pretty short).

Bacharach Castle / Youth Hostel

Other castles in the area have hotels not inside the castle itself, but very close by. For example, Wartburg Castle has a 5-star hotel located at the foot of the castle. You can stay in one of their tastefully designed rooms and get spectacular views of the castle and surrounding landscape.

If you’re really seeking unique, fun experiences in castles besides guided tours, then we suggest looking into special tours or events that each castle hosts. Many host medieval dinners and feasts or festive markets during Christmas season.

It’s also surrounded by a water-filled partial moat, which is a unique architectural feature for castles in Germany.

It has a rich history, dating back to the 12th century though the exact year remains unknown. In the 17th century, it was destroyed during the Thirty Years War. It was only in the early 20th century when it was rebuilt to be a youth hostel.

Currently, the Bacharach Youth Hostel is a world-famous accommodation that’s almost always fully booked. There are over 160 rooms accommodating different numbers of beds. There’s a dining room, bistro, cafe/bar, multiple common rooms, and even a Knights’ Hall that can be used for events for over 100 people.

Because the castle is used as a hostel, it’s not available for tours. But, the public can enjoy free entry to the courtyard where they can enjoy views of the Rhine River.

Even if you don’t stay at the castle youth hostel, you can hike up the hill for the amazing views! It’s worth hike, both to see the castle (last time I was there you could go inside the common areas, even if you’re not staying there) and the views.

Entrance Fee: no fee

Directions: By train: take a regional train (or S8 + regional train) to Bacharach (about 1 hour). Hike up the hill to the castle. By car: take B43, then A60 to L400 in Bingen am Rhein. Take exit 49-Bingen-Mitte from A61. You can drive up to the castle but may not be able to park if you’re not staying there. You can park in the public lots in the town below.

What Are Some Other Castles To Visit In Germany?

If you can’t get enough of castles, then good news for you, there are so many more to explore around Germany! According to some sources, there are over 25,000 castles throughout the country! Here are some of the other top castles in Germany to visit:

  • Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria (the famous fairytale castle Walt Disney modeled his Disneyland castle after)
  • Hohenschwangau Castle in Bavaria
  • Heidelberg Castle in Heidelberg
  • Hohenzollern Castle near Stuttgart
  • Lichtenstein Castle near Stuttgart
  • Linderhof Palace in Bavaria
  • Schwerin Castle in Schwerin in Northern Germany
  • Nymphenburg Palace in Munich
  • Herrenchiemsee Palace in Bavaria
  • Sanssouci Palace near Berlin

If you are venturing farther away from Frankfurt, Bavaria is one of the best places to start in your quest to visit more castles. The region is especially known for King Ludwig’s fairytale castles.

You can’t miss out on Neuschwanstein castle, the iconic source of inspiration for Walt Dinsey. Since it’s just a few hours from Munich, you can easily reach the castle by car or public transportation. For tips on how to plan the perfect day trip from Munich, read our guide here. While you’re there, you can also visit Hohenschwangau castle since it’s right next to Neuschwanstein.

Neuschwanstein castle

Aside from Neuschwanstein, the other King Ludwig castles like Linderhof Palace, Nymphenburg Palace, and Herrenchiemsee Palace are all worth visiting. To learn more about King Ludwig’s castles in Bavaria and how to visit them, check out our complete guide here.

If you’re heading to Berlin, then Schwerin Castle and Sanssouci Palace are all within easy access by public transportation.

In southwest Germany, you’ll find Heidelberg Castle, one of the most important castle ruins in the north of the Alps. If you’re traveling to Stuttgart, you can also plan day trips to Hohenzollern Castle and Lichtenstein Castle. If you want to add more castles to your Germany itinerary, read our guide for more tips on how to tour the best castles in Germany!

Frankfurt

Where is Frankfurt?

Located in the German state of Hesse ( Hessen in German), in the western part of the country on the banks of the River Main, Frankfurt am Main is one of the most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities in Germany. The city is also the heart of the larger Rhine-Main metropolitan region.

Frankfurt is a global city and one of the major financial centers of Europe. Because of this, this city is a hub for many worldwide and European corporate headquarters. It’s also home to some of the most renowned cultural institutions like the Alte Oper and the Museum Embankment (Museumsufer).

For many travelers, Frankfurt is widely known as the gateway to Germany or even continental Europe. This is in large part due to the Frankfurt Airport, the busiest airport in the country and one of the busiest in the world. It is the airport with the most direct routes in the world and is also the main hub for Lufthansa, the national airline of Germany.

If you’re flying in or out of Frankfurt, why not take a day or two to see the city and a castle or two?

Frankfurt Old Town

Where to Stay in Frankfurt

If you’d like to visit castles in the Frankfurt area, here are 3 easy options for where to sleep: Frankfurt city, near the Frankfurt airport, and Wiesbaden.

There are many different areas you can stay in when visiting Frankfurt. Choosing an area can depend on various things like how long you’re staying or why you plan to visit the city. You can also find all sorts of accommodation options for everyone. Depending on your budget or travel style, you might like Frankfurt’s boutique hotels, international chains, small family-run hotels or even youth hostels.

For those who are in Frankfurt on a long layover or are just stopping by on your way to another city, staying near the airport is probably be the most convenient option. That way you can get to and from the hotel and airport quickly and easily. Because Frankfurt Airport is so busy, finding a hotel that fits your budget or style shouldn’t be a problem.

And even though you’re close to the airport, it’s super easy to go into Frankfurt city! From the airport to Frankfurt’s Hauptbahnhof (main train station) it’s roughly a 15-minute ride via S-bahn (metro). Click here to see popular hotels near the Frankfurt airport!

Frankfurt city

If you want to be near all the historical landmarks and top sights, then downtown is the best area to stay in. Its central location and walkability is hard to beat. It’s also a very well connected area because of all the metro stops and how close the Hauptbahnhof is. However, since it is a very touristy area, rates might be higher especially during peak travel seasons like the months of summer or close to Christmas. Click here to see top hotels in downtown Frankfurt.

Another great option is Wiesbaden. Wiesbaden is a nice, smaller town that’s located near the airport. If you are looking for the convenience of being near Frankfurt Airport but want to stay somewhere more unique and has a picturesque downtown (with a 15 foot tall cuckoo clock!), then we recommend looking into Wiesbaden. Click here to check out the best hotels in Wiesbaden .

I’ve stayed in a hotel in downtown Frankfurt (close to everything and minutes from the airport), an AirBnB in a neighborhood outside of the city center (quieter but still easy to get around), and in a hotel in downtown Wiesbaden (peaceful, relaxing, and closer to a few of the castles in the list below). All were easy to reach from the airport and wonderful places to spend a few days right after arriving or just before departing Frankfurt.

City Hall (Rathaus), Frankfurt am Main

What to Do and See in Frankfurt

There are so many things to do and see in Frankfurt. Depending on how much you want to see, you can easily visit many of the famous landmarks in a day to a couple of days.

A good starting point for your Frankfurt itinerary is Old Town (Altstadt in German). Here you’ll find Römerberg (the beautiful central main square), Frankfurt’s City Hall (Rathaus), St. Paul’s Church (Paulskirche), Goethe House, and Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom).

For more urban landmarks, you can make your way out of Old Town to visit the European Central Bank, one of the most important financial institutions in the world.

You can’t miss out on the scenic views by the River Main, which runs throughout the city. You can stroll by the riverbanks or even book a river cruise to admire Frankfurt’s iconic skyline. The Iron Bridge (Eiserner Steg) is one of the most popular destinations to not only take photos of the cityscape but to also admire the love locks left on the bridge.

If you love arts and culture, then the Museum Embankment by the River Main is the perfect place to go. In this area, you’ll find world-class museums such as the Städel Museum, the Museum of Applied Art, the Museum of World Cultures, the German Film Museum, and the Icon Museum.

For a more comprehensive list of what to do and see in Frankfurt, read our Frankfurt guide here.

What Are Some Weekend Getaways From Frankfurt?

There are many day trip options from Frankfurt!

You can go to nearby major cities like Cologne or Heidelberg . It’s also a great starting point for exploring the Rhine Valley and its surrounding small villages like Rüdesheim am Rhein, Koblenz, Bacharach, and more.

Exploring the Black Forest region is also a good option including cities like Baden-Baden or Freiburg .

Meeting point: Stage entrance Guided tours of the Alte Oper

carnifex necromante tour

Come with us to the back! We cordially invite you to get to know the Alte Oper on a guided tour and learn interesting facts about its architecture and history. The volunteer guides from the ranks of our support group, the Society of Friends of the Alte Oper, will be happy to show you around the building and the complex processes that are necessary to ensure that everything runs smoothly when the stars of classical music and entertainment take to the podium. In the process, they also provide a glimpse into those rooms that otherwise remain hidden from the public. Where does a conductor focus in the last minutes before a concert? What does the workplace of a stage manager look like? Where are the concert grand pianos stored?

The approximately 90-minute tours are open to the public on selected dates, but can also be booked individually as an exclusive group tour with a maximum of 20 people.

• Tours are generally conducted in German. In the course of 2024, individual dates will also be offered in English. • Due to the space available, we are unfortunately unable to offer wheelchair accessible tours. • Should it happen that a planned tour cannot take place due to changes in the Alte Oper's event programme at short notice, the ticket price will be refunded. • Group tours can only be booked by private persons, not by resellers. • The guided tour is not recommended for children under the age of ten. • Please arrive 15 minutes before the tour at the stage entrance of the Alte Oper. Guests who arrive later will unfortunately not be able to attend and will not be entitled to a replacement. • The cost for a public group tour is 8 euros per person. Please note that there are additional fees for online bookings . For closed group or individual tours, the possible dates and further conditions will be agreed separately. Please use our order form.
