Get On Board! Your Cleveland Tall Ships Itinerary

Your guide to smooth sailing while in cle.

Clevelanders are pretty proud of our Great Lake (Yes, it’s ours. We’ve claimed it.) We may be called “The Land,” but we’re definitely a water city, and we celebrate it every chance we get. And there’s no shortage of maritime-themed attractions and restaurants to keep you busy while you’re in town for the annual Cleveland Tall Ships festival July 7-10, 2022.

So we just have one question for you… Arrrrre you ready to come to CLE for Tall Ships?

Head to the heart of the city for a healthy start to the day at REBoL . This urban cafe sits smack dab in the middle of Public Square , where you can stop by the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument for a dose of history and to honor the sons of Cuyahoga County who served in the Civil War.

Ready to get out on the water? Head to the North Coast Harbor Marina and rent a kayak, paddleboard or tandem pedal boat to get a view of the Cleveland skyline like no other. While you’re there, take some pictures by one of the iconic Cleveland Script Signs .

Paddle in to refuel at Nuevo Modern Mexican & Tequila Bar for lunch on the water. Right at the start of the 9th Street Pier, the restaurant gives you two levels of beautiful lakeside views and a menu that features fresh Mexican and Latin American dishes made from scratch.

Afternoon + Dinner

Avast! Are ye ready for the main event? Head over to the Cleveland Tall Ships Festival , where you can dance to live music, shop the marketplace, climb a rock wall, and take part in the Ask the Captain forums. Photo ops abound as you interact with pirates onboard the ships, and you’ll be remiss if you don’t throw in a pirate pun or two. Food and beverage stands are available throughout the festival, including some of Cleveland’s best craft beers and cuisine.

The festival starts with a dramatic Parade of Sail on Thursday, and there are plenty of special events throughout the weekend, including Happy Hour at the Dock each evening and fireworks on Saturday night. Scheduled Sail Aways start at 10 a.m. every morning and there are a limited number of 75-minute Day Sails and two-hour Twilight Sail tickets available, so make sure to book your boarding pass to be part of the fun, savvy?

After Hours

If you’re still looking to wet your whistle and in the mood for a mari-time , head over to Nauti Mermaid for a sea-themed night of revelry. This fun bar/restaurant serves up spirits and grub in a Key West crab shack setting.

Point yourselves eastward and head to the nearby Playhouse Square district to break your fast at Yours Truly . There’s nothing particularly seaworthy about the spot, but it serves delicious food and you can’t visit CLE without gawking at the world’s largest outdoor chandelier.

Want to see something amazing? Like, a WWII submarine that conducted seven war patrols and sunk 12 enemy ships? Cleveland’s got one of those. Climb aboard the USS Cod memorial and museum, a National Historic Landmark and the only fully intact WWII fleet submarine for a different kind of boat experience.

Lindy’s Lake House is the perfect spot to sit on the waterfront, enjoy some fresh seafood (or burgers, or other great options, if that’s not your style), and take in the Cuyahoga River views. It’s laid back, it’s chill, it’s family-friendly, and it’s got that #BoatersLife vibe.

Spend your afternoon at the totally awesome Great Lakes Science Center , where you can explore hands-on exhibits, the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater and the NASA Glenn Visitor Center. Of course, don’t miss your chance to hop on board the historic Steamship William G. Mather to see what it’s like to walk the deck of a Great Lakes freighter.

Collision Bend Brewing Company got its name for the stretch of the Cuyahoga River it sits on, where commercial ships had to navigate the narrow passage. Today, it’s known as a fantastic spot for sunset views and excellent food that the whole family can enjoy. The craft brewery and full-service restaurant also happens to have one of the best waterside patios in Cleveland.

Looking for one last boat ride? Climb aboard the Goodtime III for a sightseeing cruise with narrated tours and entertainment.

Where to Stay

Drop your anchor at one of the many fantastic hotels within walking distance or a short drive from the Tall Ships festival. Float off to sleep at Aloft Cleveland Downtown , right in the heart of the East Bank of the Flats, surrounded by plenty of restaurants and waterside nightlife. Or, catch the best view of Lake Erie at the gorgeous Hilton Cleveland Downtown . Other nearby options include DoubleTree by Hilton Cleveland Downtown, Lakeside ; Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower , Drury Plaza Hotel , and the Westin Cleveland Downtown .

Wanna see a big boat on Lake Michigan? Viking Cruises ship stops in Algoma on May 29

The stopovers are part of viking's great lakes collection cruise, and boat fans are welcome to watch the ship and its passenger ferries arrive and depart..

The Viking Polaris ship is seen anchored in waters of the Atlantic Ocean in Ushuaia, southern Argentina, on Dec. 1, 2022.

ALGOMA - For those interested in watching big boats on Lake Michigan, the first of eight Viking Cruises to stop over in Algoma in 2024 drops anchor in the waters off the shore at about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The ship will moor in the lake off the Algoma Pierhead Lighthouse, with passengers disembarking via ferry about a half-hour later. Boating fans are invited by the Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce to head to Heritage Park and the city marina to watch the ships and their passenger ferries arrive and depart, and the chamber will set up a mobile visitor center near the park to provide information to passengers and crew members.

It's the second straight year Viking's Great Lakes Collection cruise includes a stop in Algoma, which offers optional passenger excursions not only in Kewaunee County but also Door County and Lambeau Field in Green Bay. The Swiss-based cruise line also featured Algoma as a destination eight times in 2023, the first year the city and Door County were part of the cruise.

The specific ship stopping in Algoma on Wednesday is the 665-foot-long Viking Octanis, on its way from Toronto. Built in 2022 and with a capacity of 378 guests and 256 crew members, the Octanis is scheduled to return to Algoma at about 7 a.m. June 11, on its way from Duluth, with future stops at 8 a.m. Aug. 7, 7 a.m. Aug. 20, 8 a.m. Sept. 18 and 7 a.m. Oct. 1.

Another Viking cruise ship making the Great Lakes run, the Viking Polaris, is scheduled to stop in Algoma at 8 a.m. July 12 and 7 a.m. July 25. The Polaris has the same dimensions and capacity as the Octanis.

The cruises arriving in Algoma at 8 a.m. are scheduled to depart at about 6 p.m., while the 7 a.m. arrivals depart at about 3 p.m. All times depend on weather and the captain's prerogative.

The Great Lakes Collection cruises run from Toronto to Duluth, Minnesota, or the other way around. The cruise takes 15 days and stops at 10 destinations along the way, including Niagara Falls; Cleveland; Detroit; Mackinac Island; Alpena, Michigan (home of the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center); Thunder Bay and other scenic natural locations in Ontario. A passage through the Soo Locks in the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Ontario, also is part of the itinerary.

Passengers who disembark in Algoma can choose from a variety of guided excursions offered by the cruise. Along with the tour of Lambeau Field and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, there also are a kayaking and hiking adventure at Door County's Moonlight Bay and Cana Island Lighthouse, a hike along the Niagara Escarpment, charter fishing on Lake Michigan, wine and scenic tours by motor coach of Door County and a wine/beer/cheese tour of Algoma. Passengers also can do a self-guided tour of the city and its art galleries, Crescent Beach, Ahnapee Trail and dining and beverage establishments.

Legendary rock guitarist cancels US tour, including Cleveland concert

Robin Trower cancels U.S. tour MGM Northfield Park Northfield Ohio Cleveland

English rock guitarist Robin Trower, 79, has canceled his fall U.S. tour, including a Sept. 27 concert at MGM Northfield Park near Cleveland, Ohio, due to ongoing health issues. Trower said he will undergo a medical procedure at a date to be determined. “I know that you will be as disappointed as I am, but I am very hopeful that this procedure will give me a new lease of life and I can return to doing what I love the most- playing live ASAP," he said in a statement. • Zach Mentz, cleveland.com

English rock guitarist Robin Trower has canceled his fall tour across the United States due to health issues.

Trower, 79, was set to begin his U.S. tour in Des Moines, Iowa, on Sept. 14, with shows booked across the country throughout September and October, including a Sept. 27 performance at MGM Northfield Park in Northfield, Ohio, about 30 minutes south of Cleveland. Trower’s now-canceled concert at MGM Northfield Park was announced in April .

“It is with great regret that I must inform you that I will be unable to fulfil the upcoming tour of the USA in September/October,” Trower said in a statement. “I have struggled with health issues for some time now. Following my latest stay in hospital a few weeks ago, my doctor advised me that the only possible way for an effective long-term solution is to undertake a major operation as soon as possible.

“I am currently awaiting confirmation of that date. I have also been advised that the recovery time to 100% full fitness could take a while. This makes committing to a fixed touring period in the near future impossible. I have struggled with this decision but realize I cannot continue touring at this time.

“I know that you will be as disappointed as I am, but I am very hopeful that this procedure will give me a new lease of life and I can return to doing what I love the most- playing live ASAP. I look forward to catching up with you all as soon as I am able,” he added.

RELATED: Legendary rock band cancels tour dates due to singer’s medical procedure

Trower rose to rock stardom as a member of English rock band Procol Harum from 1967 to 1971. He later left the band and released a solo album, “Bridges of Sighs,” which recently celebrated the 50th anniversary since its release on April 20, 1974. He has released more than two dozen albums during his decades-long musical career.

Trower’s most recent album, “Joyful Sky,” was released in 2023.

Avon lake pilots first electrochemical water treatment process in north america.

The Avon Lake Regional Water system

Avon Lake Regional Water will be the first utility in North American to use onsite tech that produces the chemical required to treat drinking water.

Avon Lake Regional Water will be the first Northeast Ohio utility to employ a promising new technology developed in Asia that produces the chemicals required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to treat drinking water.

The pilot project, facilitated by the Cleveland Water Alliance (CWA) and created by South Korean technology company Techwin , will install a system that uses salt and an electrochemical process to make high-concentrate sodium hypochlorite, an EPA-required water treatment compound.

ship to tour in cleveland

“It is a process that starts with salt and goes through an electrical chemical process through a series of modules that use a specific type of electrical pulse or current and it creates what is needed for water treatment,” said Bryan Stubbs, CWA president and executive director.

The partnership comes after years of discussions and a few international trips, Stubbs said. In the end Techwin and the South Korean government, which is funding the $6 million economic development project, picked Lake Erie to be the entrance point into the U.S. market.

“They could have gone anywhere in the U.S. but they saw the work we have done here around building out the smart sensors and test beds on the lake and came here,” Stubbs said. “We were asked to help find a pilot partner here to launch the technology.”

Avon Lake will use sodium hypochlorite — a liquid compound comprised of a chlorine ion bonded to an oxygen atom used to control algal and other contaminants in potable water — to replace the chlorine gas it has been using for water treatment.

The timing for the pilot comes as many water utilities are looking for solutions to sourcing sodium hypochlorite because prices for treatment chemicals spiked during the pandemic.

And subsequent supply chain problems in some U.S. locations meant water treatment plants were unable to receive shipments of the necessary chemicals, which the EPA requires to treat drinking water.

“There are only a few manufacturers in the country," Stubbs said. "They create (the chlorine gas) in big batches of what is used in water treatment. It's then put on trains for shipment which is a slow and highly regulated process. This electrochemical process is a lot more benign from a regulatory perspective.”

Even before the supply chain issues, utilities in places like Avon Lake went from paying about $470 a ton for the chlorine gas used in its water treatment to $2,300 a ton. And in Avon Lake, said Rub Munro, chief utility executive at the Avon Lake water facility, it's been a common occurrence to have 11-ton cylinders shipped from manufacturers out of state.

Producing sodium hypochlorite on site cuts costs for ratepayers and reduces the risks associated with transporting the chlorine gas, which is considered a hazardous material.

The on-site additive process will address the supply chain issues while keeping costs constrained.

“We're trying to minimize our risk because if we can't get sodium hypochlorite, we don't have clean water. We see the scarcity as a trend and we want to be out in front of it,” Munro added.

Avon Lake, a midsize utility governed by a five-member board of elected residents rather than the city, is also prepping to increase the water draw on its system and has been looking for progressive and unique technology adoption to make that happen.

At the time that Munro began discussions with CWA and Techwin, no water utility in the state had an on-site chemical generation system. “Techwin wants to expand this technology into the United States and we said we'd be willing to partner,” he added.

The Avon Lake utility sends 87% of the water produced in the facility to bulk customers outside of Avon Lake and, Munro said, he is always looking for ways to diversify its revenue stream. The eventual goal is to produce enough sodium hypochlorite to sell to other utilities in the region.

Actual cost savings from producing the treatment in-house will be determined during the pilot. Another benefit to using the electrochemical process is that the salt needed as the raw ingredient will come from a mine in Rittman, Ohio.

“We are much closer to the salt mine than the facility we were sourcing our chlorine gas from so we are going to get a much more attractive price,” Munro said.

Now that contracts have been signed, the Techwin machinery on its way. Installation is expected to begin in the fall with Techwin staff be on site to help install. The system, Stubbs said, will be up and running by early next year.

From there, CWA will offer tours and look for other partners to use the technology.

The Techwin technology has been used in several Asian countries, including South Korea and Vietnam, and now the company is looking to CWA to find and develop a manufacturing partnership here in Ohio, Stubbs said.

“It is the embodiment of the ripple effects of the water economy,” Stubbs said. “We will be testing this technology here, piloting it here and then, once the pilot is successful and if we manufacture it here, it can ship through the Port of Cleveland .”

Ty Blach tries to right Rockies' ship again

The Colorado Rockies recovered from the worst start in franchise history to creep near respectability, but now they're in another tailspin.

Share Video

Colorado has dropped three straight but will try to end it there when it hosts the Cincinnati Reds in Denver on Tuesday night for the second of a three-game series. Cincinnati took the opener on Monday 13-3 for its second straight win.

The Rockies will send left-hander Ty Blach (2-2, 4.15 ERA) against Reds righty Frankie Montas (2-4, 4.60).

Blach is facing Cincinnati for the seventh time in his career and will make his fourth start against the Reds. He is 0-1 with a 6.27 ERA in his previous six outings against the National League Central club.

If he pitches like he has in his last two starts, Blach will likely stop Colorado's losing streak. The Denver native tossed 6 2/3 innings against Philadelphia on May 24 and followed that with a season-high seven innings against Cleveland on Wednesday night.

He allowed just two runs in each game, both Rockies victories.

It's a good sign for a pitcher who began the season in Triple-A before joining Colorado in April. He worked out of the bullpen in three of his first four appearances and joined the rotation full-time May 12 -- picking up the Rockies' fourth straight win after they opened the season 8-28.

His struggles in spring training was one reason he began the year in the minors, but that time helped him straighten out some issues.

"Unfortunately, I gave up some runs in big situations late in games. That's how it goes in spring sometimes," he said. "You don't have the same scouting reports. You don't know how to attack hitters, and everybody is getting a feel for the game. So for me to go down to Albuquerque and gain that confidence that I can get guys out gives me confidence here."

Montas has also been pitching well but took the loss against St. Louis in his last outing on Wednesday after giving up three runs on six hits in six innings. Montas is in his first season in Cincinnati after making just one appearance for the New York Yankees in 2023 -- in the second-to-last game of the season.

He made his Reds debut as the Opening Day starter and threw six scoreless innings against the Washington Nationals but went on the injured list in late April with right forearm tightness. Tuesday will be his sixth start since coming off the IL on May 7, and Cincinnati has lost all five of his previous starts.

Montas will make his fourth career start against the Rockies. He is 1-2 with a 5.02 ERA in the previous three outings.

If the offense produces like it did Monday night with a season high in runs and hits, Montas might break his losing streak. The Reds are starting to gel at the plate, and it coincides with the return of TJ Friedl, who had two hits in just his 11th game this season Monday.

"The way he plays the game, it's very consistent with our style of play and what's important to us," manager David Bell said. "He's the center of all those things, in the clubhouse, on the field, playing hard and competing and doing all the things that it takes to win."

Music Review: British guitarist Richard Thompson’s ‘Ship to Shore’ is a gem, with dazzling solos

For more than half a century, British guitarist Richard Thompson has created albums filled with curious characters, love laments, dark chords, dark humor and peerless guitar work.

That makes each release a cause for celebration, which is the case with his new album “Ship to Shore.” It ends a five-year recording hiatus, the longest break of Thompson’s career. His typically prolific pace was slowed in part by the completion of his engaging 2021 memoir , “Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice 1967-1975.”

“Ship to Shore” has been worth the wait because the album meets his consistently high standard while sounding like no one else. He has never sung better, and his jagged solos are concise, constant marvels.

Thompson produced the set, recorded in Woodstock, New York . It includes his crack rhythm section of bassist Taras Prodaniuk and drummer Michael Jerome. David Mansfield provides occasional fiddle.

The mood is gloomy, as usual for Thompson, with much of the music in a minor key as he sings about demons and ghosts, fear and dread, hard times, PTSD and heartache – lots of heartache. Love blinds, causes confusion, goes wrong and melts away. “Romance,” he concludes, “is overrated” in the song “Trust.”

This cover image released by Island Records shows "Forever" by Bon Jovi. (Island Records via AP)

There are bits of Britishness, such as when Thompson rhymes flirty and dirty with shirt-y on “Maybe,” an uncharacteristically bouncy tune that evokes the 1965 pop charts until it veers into a wild bridge. He explores an interest in Renaissance music on “The Old Pack Mule,” a ditty with appropriately ghoulish guitar and a sing-along chorus.

Other highlights include “Turnstile Casanova,” driven by a bright guitar hook and jovial singing, and “Life’s a Bloody Show,” the tale of a dead soul who bears a resemblance to “Fergus Laing,” the clownish scoundrel in a 2015 Thompson song of the same name that was soon overtaken by actual events.

The set opens with “Freeze,” a shanty and a call to stay active. Thompson, 75, follows that advice, and on the closing “We Roll,” he reflects on suitcase living that’s a result of his still-busy concert schedule.

“I must be crazy,” the road warrior muses, but there are new songs to be sung.
