Across America and Back

Vespa marketing suggests an urban, hipster lifestyle.  But the Italian scooter is ready for a lot more — like a trip across America and back.

All the photos are Mike’s and he’s been kind enough to let me use them in this post about his trip.

The Vespa sits along the road in Idaho (I think) and just whispers a siren song to ride.

Like extra fuel for the scooter.

I want to see more of America myself.

I slept almost not at all last night, up late and early with prep, and a busy mind kept me awake most of the time I was in bed. But now I’m in Fallon, Nevada. It’s late, I’m sleepy, so this will be short. The Cliff’s Notes version is that I first rode to the Golden Gate Bridge (so it would really be coast-to-coast), then through the oven known as the Sacramento Valley (96 F today, rising to 108 on Thursday), into and out of the Tahoe Basin, and onto the desolation that is Nevada (not a judgement). In Fallon I met my friend of 45 years, Bob Clem, who is on a motorcycle trip of his own, counterclockwise around the western states. I’m typing this in the Best Western lobby so he can sleep in peace in our room. Today’s ride was a bit surreal. After so much time spent in anticipation, I had a heightened sense of, “This is it.” It takes time to cover land on a scooter. Time to think, reflect, observe, adjust and be at peace. I think this will be a good trip.

What a great perspective…

Ok Steve, when you ride your own cross country Vespa journey, make sure to include an extended sojourn in Colorado!

If I ever make that trip I’ll be sure to ride through Denver.

I’m envious. I did 2900 mile ride on my Vespa 300 from Maine to Asheville, NC and back. I had fabulous time. I’d ride to San Francisco and back if my wife would let me.

Time and finances have smiled on me, and I’ve been fortunate to take quite a number of coast-to-coast two wheeled runs in the last forty years, some lasting for a few months and 15,000+ miles, and other trips requiring a quick coast-to-coast run lasting just a few days. Every trip has been awesome and memorable, although I’ve never taken one on an engine as small as 300 cc’s. But I have read and viewed the travel-logs of many who have crossed continents, or gone even further, on scooters with engines as small as 50 cc’s. I even read of one guy some years ago who went from the northernmost tip of Alaska to the southernmost tip of South America on his 50 cc Honda Metropolitan. As I’ve been riding both large touring motorcycles and scooters for decades, I often dream of a long distance scooter tour in my future any time I read of yet another adventurer’s exciting time on the road.

Fortunate indeed to find yourself in a position to spend so much time on the road. For many of us we live vicariously through those trips. Probably accounts for the success of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

When you take your coast to coast trip be sure to include the northern coast…

That’s quite the journey. 40 years ago I wanted to make the trip on my bicycle but I may settle for a gas powered vehicle these days. But I like the idea of sticking to secondary roads.

Before my wife passed away I couldn’t even consider a long ride on a 250cc scooter. She wouldn’t let me. I will spend the Winter planning something to confirm my existence even if just an 800 mile ride to the Laconia Bike Week next June. It’s something I just have to do.

Mike is probably home by now. Awaiting the last post where he pulls in the driveway. It has been an exceptional ride on the Vespa. When he started it seemed like it would go on forever and then suddenly it’s over…

I dreamed of a blue water sailing adventure for a long time. When I finally took to the ocean and spent a week at sea sailing from Virginia to Maine I had enough. No sailing desire was left. Maybe it was the storms.

I guess it all depends on how Mike’s experiences unfolded. I’m waiting to read his final round up of thoughts. I would like to think it will be “I want to do it again!”

Scott Wharton here in reno nv bought my vespa gts 300 may 17th 2016 after 1st service left july 1st road to pueblo Colorado and back to reno 2070 miles trip of a life time planning a lifetime of more took hwy 50 the whole way up and over continental dive 11312 ft. there is nothing like it definetly a bucket list

Scott, That sounds like a fantastic adventure on the Vespa. The scale and scope of things in your part of the country are wildly different than the places I ride. I’ll have to get out a map and see exactly what hwy 50 takes you through.

Just a few questions 1, are helmets needed. 2 ,motels or camping. 3, expenses costs for gas,and food

My opinion — helmets are always required. Others feel differently but I never ride without a full face helmet.

I like to camp though my aging body is less and less thrilled with the hard earth when sleeping. It’s really a personal choice.

Expenses have been low on my trips. Gas, food, a campground fee.

Excellent show got the crowd bouncing . Definitely would go to see them again, buzzing. Even the support band was excellent played some really gd songs , and when they played let it go from Frozen 6000 people went crazy

Fantastic night, the guy creates a great atmosphere. We left feeling hyper hyper. Just a great artist to listen to whilst driving fast to take away any stresses you may have in life. Brilliant!

PGA Tour star, former Arizona State golfer Grayson Murray dead at 30

FORT WORTH, Texas — Grayson Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner who battled alcohol issues and depression, has died, according to PGA Tour officials. No cause of death has been listed, but PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan issued a statement to staff and players stating that grief counselors would be on hand but the tournament would continue as scheduled. Murray played at Arizona State University.

Murray played the first round and part of the second round in this week's Charles Schwab Challenge, but withdrew from the event after 16 holes.

No cause of death has been listed, but PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan issued a statement to staff and players stating that grief counselors would be on hand but the tournament would continue as scheduled.

He attended Wake Forest University, East Carolina University, and Arizona State University, and later won the 2017 Barbasol Championship and the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii.

"We were devastated to learn -- and are heartbroken to share -- that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning," Monahan said in his note. "I am at a loss for words. The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones. I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so.

"As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes. The PGA Tour has grief counselors available at both tournament sites, as well as virtually for those not in the field. I am en route to Ft. Worth and will share more information when we can."

Excelling from an early age

After capturing three straight IMG Junior World titles starting in 2006, he became the second youngest player to make the cut at a Korn Ferry Tour event when he did so at the age of 16. He also played in the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion as an amateur.

Murray showed great promise on the course, winning the 2017 Barbasol despite drinking during tournament week and admitting in January that he played three days hungover when he won.

“Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year,” he said. “I think the alcohol brought a side out of me that wasn’t me. It was kind of the monster in me in a way.”

But the early success proved to be short-lived. He struggled to make cuts and conceded he was jealous of the players he grew up competing against, who were having greater success. Along the way, he had a Twitter spat with a fellow player,  suffered a scooter accident in 2022 in Bermuda , and threatened to quit on multiple occasions. Murray also dealt with anxiety and depression, and said there were days he didn’t want to get out of bed.

“I just thought I was a failure,” he said. “I thought I had a lot of talent that was just a waste of talent.”

Turning things around through sobriety

It appeared his life turned around, however, as Murray had gotten sober in 2023.

“It was by choice,” he said. “It was time.”

He regained exempt status on the PGA Tour after winning twice on the Korn Ferry Tour last year and set out to treat his return to the big leagues as a new beginning.

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina,  Murray said he was treating the 2024 season as if it was his rookie year all over again.

“I was young and thought I was invincible. Wasn’t doing the correct stuff off the course to really give myself the best chance to succeed out here,” he said. “My scooter accident in Bermuda was really a low point in my life. You know, I’ve obviously been vocal about the alcohol use in the past. I’m over eight months sober now. I have a beautiful fiancée that I love so much and who is so supportive of me, and my parents are so supportive of me.”

Murray had made waves via social media in 2021  when he revealed his struggles with Tour life that he said had led him to become an alcoholic. Murray claimed he was on probation with the PGA Tour after he got drunk in a Hawaii hotel bar despite causing “no scene whatsoever.” He also expressed disappointment that the Tour didn’t help him deal with his alcohol problem.

Especially if you are planning to organize your trip in the high season, for example in the months of July and August or during the Christmas holidays, when the number of tourists and cars on the road increases exponentially. Finally, proceed to Pompeii and be ready to explore an authentic wonder of the world, a place of an inestimable historical value.

Itinerary 2: from Sorrento to Vietri sul Mare

Here we have a more classic itinerary, the one that most of the travellers choose to visit the Amalfi Coast by scooter. A route of about 50 kilometers, along the SS163 state road .

Always starting from Sorrento you will travel along the southern part of the coast, through the most famous locations and the most fascinating villages. Unmissable stops of this on the road on two wheels are Positano, Praiano, the Fiordo di Furore, Conca dei Marini, Amalfi, Atrani, Ravello, Minori and Maiori, Cetara and, finally, Vietri sul Mare.

A route that offers an extraordinary mix between the naturalistic and architectural beauties of the region. An itinerary that can include an incredible number of program changes: you will soon realize how it will be easy to be caught by the curiosity and visit every cove and every village that you will meet along the way.

Itinerary 3: Discovering the most beautiful beaches of the Amalfi Coast

The third itinerary is dedicated to lovers of sunbathing and diving, that means to the ones who cannot stay too far from beaches and sea.

Starting from Sorrento, we suggest exploring the coast in search of the perfect beach , that will not be hard to find. The Amalfi Coast, in fact, has beaches suitable for everybody, from the most famous ones to the most hidden and solitary ones, from the sandy ones to the cliffs.

We give you some ideas: the stops that we recommend you to do along the way are Puolo, Nerano, Fornillo beach, Marina di Praia, the Fiordo di Furore and the Emerald Grotto, Maiori beach and, finally , the one of the Two Brothers, in Vietri sul Mare. But, as already mentioned, these are just some of the most beautiful and famous beaches you will see.

Amalfi Coast by motorbike, where to sleep

Where to sleep on the Amalfi Coast ? If it is true that motorcycles or scooters give you the freedom to stop when and where you want, is also true that during the high season, because of the high influx of tourists, it is advisable not to improvise but to book in advance your accommodation. In this way, you will avoid unpleasant inconveniences and the desperate search of a last minute room.

However, If you choose a low-season period, it will not be difficult to find a place to stop even without an advance booking. Your trip “ on the road ” of the Amalfi Coast by scooter will give you the freedom to decide day after day where to stop for the night. In this way, you will not need to schedule anything.

In general, our suggestion to decide where to stay is to look for a place in the larger tourist centres, such as Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento , to have a greater choice at any level and for any budget.

On the other hand, looking for a hotel or a B & B out of the historic centres and in less touristic areas it will be easier to find solutions with more advantageous prices and better conditions (for example: quieter rooms, more exclusive locations, more beautiful views, etc.).

Grayson Murray survived a nearly fatal scooter accident, but lost his battle to a deadly illness

A promising career cut short: The PGA Tour mourns the loss of a talented golfer.

Grayson Murray , a two-time PGA Tour winner, has passed away at the age of 30 . PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan confirmed his death on Saturday, leaving the golf community in shock and mourning. Details about the cause of his death have not been disclosed, but Murray's candidness about his struggles with alcoholism and mental health has been well-documented.

Murray's promising career was marred by a serious scooter crash in Bermuda in 2022. While en route to their hotel, Murray and his caddie, Doug Schwimer , collided head-on with a car. The accident left Murray unconscious and resulted in severe injuries , requiring 50 stitches, 25 of which were on his face. Despite wearing a helmet, which Murray credited with saving his life , the incident forced him to withdraw from the tournament due to significant trauma.

Bermuda scooter accident: A pivotal moment in Murray's life

The news of Murray's passing has left a profound impact on the golf community. Commissioner Monahan expressed his deep sorrow, stating, "I am at a loss for words. The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones. " In response to the tragedy, grief counselors have been made available at PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events to support those affected.

The scooter accident in Bermuda was a pivotal moment in Murray's life. The 29-year-old golfer was in Bermuda for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship when the crash occurred. Both Murray and Schwimer were riding separate scooters when they collided with a car, resulting in serious injuries. Murray's unconscious state and subsequent hospitalization underscored the severity of the accident.

Despite the physical and emotional toll of his injuries, Murray's spirit remained unbroken . He shared updates on his recovery through social media, expressing gratitude for the support he received from the PGA Tour staff, players, caddies, and fans. Grayson Murray, who died at age 30 on Saturday morning , had been open about his battles with alcoholism and mental illness in the past.

Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, battled depression and alcohol addiction for years, but had recently enjoyed a career resurgence.

He won the Sony Open in January after winning two Korn Ferry events in 2023 to requalify for his PGA Tour card. It was his first victory in seven years.

After the Sony Open win in Hawaii, an emotional Murray discussed the hard fight he had with mental issues and finding happiness and admitted he had considered suicide.

“It’s not easy,” he said. “I wanted to give up a lot of times. Give up on myself. Give up on the game of golf. Give up on life, at times.”

Murray also praised his fiancée, Christiana Ritchie and Jesus, for giving him love and support during the hard times.

“When you get tired of fighting, let someone else fight for you. … I hope everyone at home watching can get a little inspiration from it. If I can just help one person, that’s all it takes … I knew today was not going to change my life, but it did change my career, and I’m excited.”

The Sony Open wasn’t the only time Murray had talked about his battle with depression and alcoholism. After his win in the Korn Ferry Tour’s AdventHealth Championship — his first victory in six years at the time — he credited the help his parents had given him during his hard times .

“Six years is a long drought, far longer than I wanted,” Murray said. “Sometimes your highs are high out here and your lows are low. It’s a very humbling sport. I’ve been working really hard, and this is a testament to the hard work.

“My parents have been through hell and back basically for the last six years with me fighting some mental stuff,” he added.

“It’s not easy on me, and the people around me that love me, they don’t like to see me down. They’ve been my No. 1 supporters. There’s a few friends as well that have been there, and it makes these moments a lot more special when you can share it with them.”

In 2021, Murray blasted the PGA Tour for not having enough services available to help in his fight with alcoholism.

“No the pga tour didn’t force me to drink. but the pga tour never gave me help,” Murray wrote in a tweet that was later deleted. “In my 5 years of experience of being on tour not once have i ever had a request been acknowledged by the commissioner or the PAC other than ‘we will get back to you’. I hope not only the PGA tour steps up in the areas they need to step up but i also hope people are held accountable in their roles they serve.”

In subsequent years, Murray had patched up his issues with the PGA Tour and, along with commissioner Jay Monahan, had worked together to make the tour more helpful to players who are undergoing mental health battles.

“I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said Saturday. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Murray also was appointed to the 16-member Player Advisory Council.

“My story is not finished. I think it’s just beginning,” Murray said in Hawaii. “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues.”

Before his death on Saturday, Murray — a Raleigh native — had withdrawn from the Charles Schwab Challenge on Friday.

No cause of death has been disclosed.

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning at age 30, the Tour confirmed.

Murray withdrew Friday late in his second round at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness.

There were no immediate details on the circumstances surrounding his death. (Update: The family released a statement Sunday morning related to Murray’s death.)

In a memo to the membership that was released Saturday afternoon, commissioner Jay Monahan wrote: “I am at a loss for words. The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. There is nothing we can do but mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Monahan said that, after a conversation with Murray’s parents, tournament play at Colonial would continue.

“They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so,” said Monahan, who flew to Texas to meet with players. “As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Murray won the Sony Open in a playoff earlier this year, ending a six-year winless drought during which he’d struggled both mentally and physically.

Murray, who was profiled in this in-depth piece by Golf Channel in 2017, had been open about his battles with anxiety and depression. He said in January that he sought treatment in the past few years for alcohol abuse but had been sober for several months.

“Grayson was the absolute best,” his caddie, Jay Green, told GolfChannel.com via text message. “Not only was he an incredible, thoughtful and generous boss, he was an even better friend. He truly would do anything for anyone. He has the best family, and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him deeply.”

Following his victory at Waialae, Murray spoke optimistically about his future, saying that he had rediscovered his faith and was engaged to be married to Christiana Ritchie, whom he met in 2021.

“I wouldn’t trade anything,” Murray said at the time. “I have a beautiful fiancée. I have beautiful parents. I have beautiful nephews, siblings. Everyone in my life right now who is close to me, who has been through the struggles with me, it’s all a team effort. I think this is just the start of something really special.”

Growing up, Murray was one of the best prospects in the country, winning the prestigious Junior Worlds three times and becoming, at age 16, then the second-youngest to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour. Though he bounced around in college, Murray made an immediate impact once he landed on the PGA Tour, claiming the 2017 Barbasol Championship as a 22-year-old rookie.

“Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year but also feeling like I was invincible,” Murray said in January. He said he often drank to excess while at tournaments while battling his personal demons.

Murray, who spent time on the PGA and Korn Ferry tours over the last five years, regained his PGA Tour status this year after winning twice on the secondary circuit in 2023 and believed he was better equipped to handle the challenges of Tour life.

“It took me a long time to get to this point,” he said. “That was over seven years ago. I’m a different man now.”

Ranked 58th in the world, Murray had made the cut in the first two majors of the year, including last week at the PGA Championship, where he tied for 43 rd . He was exempt into next month’s U.S. Open.

“We will hold off on commenting until we learn further details,” said his management company, GSE, in a statement, “but our heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time.”

Weather conditions in Schilde, Belgium, for the second round of the DP World Tour’s Soudal Open weren’t great. Temperatures struggled to crack 60 degrees as clouds and rain showers lingered. It wasn’t the kind day where you’d want to take off your shirt and soak up some rays. But one player did choose to strip down in the middle of his round.

Louis de Jager’s tee shot on the par-4 13th just narrowly avoided splashing down in a pond, instead landing on the marshy shore—inside the red hazard stake, but playable.

The golfer weighed his options and decided he’d play the ball where it lied. But de Jager knew there was a good chance he’d kick up a fair amount of mud when he made contact with the ball. So, not wanting to get his shirt all dirty for the rest of his chilly round, de Jager decided to play the shot shirtless.

That would have been comical enough, but the South African also decided for some reason to play with his belt undone. The result was a scene usually reserved for weekend hackers who’ve had one too many.

de Jager managed to knock the ball back into the safety of the fairway and then hit a fantastic third shot to within seven feet of the hole to give himself a good opportunity to save par. He missed the putt, though, and had to settle for bogey.

His round didn’t get any more normal after that, unfortunately. His tee shot on the next hole found the water, although he was able to save par after another close approach. de Jager then birdied his next three holes before hitting his tee shot on No. 18 out of bounds and settling for a double bogey.

He finished with a 2-under 69 and is 6-under for the tournament. He’s currently in a tie for 23rd place . But at least his shirt is clean.
