Clean and plenty of room for handbaggage. Leg room was cramped compared with the 777 from Frankfurt.

United Airlines was fantastic, however, UnderPricer was a nightmare. I got to the airport 4 hours before my flight. We are moving to New Zealand so had quite a bit of baggage (16 checked items) and so wanted to have plenty of time to get everything taken care of properly. When I went to check in they (United) could only find a ticket for me. The 5 tickets for my children were never officially ticketed. I called Underpricer and they told me it was United's fault and United told me that Underpricer just needs to reissue the tickets, but they refused to. I asked the Underpricer agent to transfer me to his supervisor as I was not getting the help I needed. He told me the supervisor was busy but that he would call me back in 30 minutes. 30 minutes came and went with no phone call. After an hour I called Underpricer back but they would not let me talk to the person I had talked to before, just told me that he was talking with the supervisor and technical support. I called again an hour later, was told the same thing. I tried again later, with only about 30 minutes until my flight was scheduled to leave (meaning I had been at the airport for more than 3 hours with my 5 children trying to get ticketed and board the flight). Also, my husband had moved to New Zealand 3 months prior, I haven't seen him in 3 months, my children hadn't seen their dad in 3 months, we were all extremely eager to get on that flight and get to New Zealand. The situation with the tickets did not get resolved until after it was too late to check our luggage and board our flight. We were devastated. My 11 year old son was in tears at not being able to be on his way to see his dad. Thankfully we were rebooked for the next evening, but that night it felt devastating. We'd been at the airport for 4 hours waiting. My in-laws waited with me and then helped me reload all our baggage and took us home to stay with them for the night. On the newly booked flights we could not sit together - my children were spread throughout the plane. So, even though I had paid extra to select our seats after buying my seats from Underpricer only two of us were able to sit together (thankful that my 11 year old wasn't all by himself, but not happy that my 14 & 16 year old daughters were seated by strangers). I really feel that Underpricer should refund me what I paid for the seating ($120 USD). It was a very frustrating situation and I plan on never using Kayak or Underpricer ever again.

3.5 hour delay known 12-16 hours before departure $15 meal vouchers which did not even cover cost of sandwich. Unable to reach agent for 1.5 hours, only then to be informed any rerouting to my destination would cost an additional $1000. Finally got rebooked on a 7.5 layover in Denver only to find out my original connecting flight was also delayed so I stood by and got on my original connection arriving only 3 hours late instead of 5 hours late. Overall journey was unnecessarily stressful and lenngthy!

United is today and old, the planes, the staff, the business processes. Yet they expect premium prices for a less than average flight experience. I should have remembered to stay away from them and will remember to stay away from them in the future since I'm traveling a lot again. In a nutshell, they suck eggs.

When I got our tickets, my husband and I were easily able to get seats together (including a window seat). When we checked in at the airport all the seats were reset and we had to pick new ones, so we couldn’t sit together because there were only middle seats! Ugh that’s the worst. We were back so far we had to check our carry ons which was annoying because I bring an expensive camera that I don’t/cant check so I had to reorganize my items. Once we were seated on the plane we had to wait an hour to take off and they said there was some weather/air traffic in Denver but it was unclear. The lady I sat next to complained that our seats didn’t go back and we both got free complimentary snack boxes which were quite good. I wasn’t going to say anything about the seats, they were the typical uncomfortable kind. It would have been fine if the 2 hr flight hadn’t turned into 3 hrs. Not the best flight but also not the worst.

Was 4 1/2 hours delayed. No food options, poor entertainment and cramped seats made worse by people in front reclining while we could not as in back row.

The baggage handlers broke the handle on my bag that they put under the plane that I checked on the jetway. They traded it out for a less quality bag in Tulsa. But, they said they would try to fix it. Bologna! There was no fixing that bag handle. Someone didn’t care how they treated the bag.

The entertainment wasn’t playing in the app or online.

Tray table was filthy when I sat down. I needed to have someone come clean it because there was food and stains on it WiFi didn’t work after paying for in-flight WiFi. Food was terrible and was not filling at all Chicken was rubbery Flight attendant had an attitude, interrupted me and wasn’t able to answer basic questions about the food selection such as “does the chicken have red sauce in it”. If your flight attendants are not going to know what is in the meals so we can make an educated decision based on dietary restrictions, they shouldn’t be on the plane. My 1.5 year old niece was sleeping and dropped her binkie. I went on the ground under the chairs looking for it. It was at that time that she came up to me as I’m CLEARLY on all 4s with a flashlight and said “I need to get by”. I said one moment please I’m getting something from under the seat (while my head was literally under the seat). Her reply was “no you need to move now” and proceeded to almost push me out of the way. I looked up and all I saw was her toes under my eyes. When I looked in front of me, her private parts were inches away from my face. I then made a comment “you couldn’t waited 2 seconds?” and her response was, “no I need to use the bathroom”. I understand that and would never want to be the reason someone couldn’t get to the bathroom but I was under the seat. She could’ve gone around the other way instead of harassing me, basically placing her private parts on my head and borderline pushing me out of the way. You don’t pay that much for this deplorable experience. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had on American. I will be absolutely thinking twice and thrice about flying American Airlines again. I would rather pay more to fly delta because at least I know their WiFi will work and their flight attendants won’t have a shitty attitude for no reason, nor will they act the way this woman did. Unacceptable.

Delayed almost 4 hours for a 45 minute flight with no explanation.

i suspect i caught flu on this flight as i could hear someone coughing a few rows back and ended up with flu a few days later. also tiresome to have to watch movies on my device by holding up smartphone screen, would have liked to have in seat display.

Plane took off without me, my stepdad and a dozen other passengers. It went from an hour delay to boarding in 15 montures without notifying anyone. Names were not called overhead. Now I’m missing a day of work and stuck in Charolette overnight paying for a hotel and Ubers out of pocket

We sat on the plane for 1 hour because the airline was short handed could not be unloading.

Flight delayed 3 times. We were directed to go to a gate across from our gate. The plane wasn't there yet so we had to wait for it to arrive, then deplane everyone and then wait again for the plane to be cleaned. After 45 minuites we were allowed on the plane. The first plane had mechanical issues. The 2nd plane must have had bathroom issues because we did not have any food service whatsoever. No snack or beverage. That made for a long time not to have anything considering that we had just made it to the original gate and we had no time to stop to get food or a drink. Then we didn't want to leave the gate to get food because we wouldn't know how much longer the delay would be. Then the next gate change. Had we been told that the total time would have been aprox 45 min later we would have left to get food and a beverage. We had to wait again for the okay to the pilot to take off so we were on the runway for another 20 min. Overall, we were delayed over 2 hours which felt like 4 hours.

Plane was good but was delayed. probably not AA fault but caused a 1 hour delay. Seating was cramped.

I had trouble finding a boarding pass because I had an hour between Flights and American did not see my flight I believe because I was ticketed through KAYAK. I did not have enough time to go to the desk before boarding so I went to the desk and told them while I was boarding and they had a boarding pass for me within three minutes. Nice. I paid extra to have more legroom and it is definitely worth it for a six hour flight. I would’ve paid for a decent dinner, but they didn’t offer anything but a snack box —not good for six hours.

Charlotte airport is miserable. For American I always have to connect from the end of terminal E to the end of terminal B and the stupid moving walkways are always broken. And the flights to all seem of least importance so they never leave on time in either direction.

Cancelled the return flight moments before boarding, horrible customer service in assisting with any rebooking. Never again will I fly Spirit.

Keep your expectations low and you will be pleasantly surprised

It was delayed 7 hours!!!!! We had to spend $550 on new flights so we didn’t miss our evening event for family. It was absolutely ridiculous. Our flight was suppose to leave at 9:30 am. Nobody was there to even help until 12:30. Worst experience ever.

Terrible experience, will definitely NEVER fly with Spirit again (this was my first AND last time). They canceled the flight JUST minutes before we were about to board, with no warning, no reason, and no recourse. We managed to get on a different, much more expensive one-way flight home (with United) later that night, and arrived early the next morning, although by that point, the garage with our car had already closed for the day. So we were left having to pay an exorbitant $200 Uber ride to get home. Trying to fly with Spirit is definitely “penny wise and pound foolish,” absolutely NOT worth whatever meager savings they promise (and then still nickel and dime you for everything from water to a carry-on bag).

It was awful. I would have to really contemplate ever flying with spirit again!!

Ridiculous that the plane was so late (3+ hours) and blaming weather even though other flights were coming and going. Also gate agent pulled me aside to measure my personal item. My personal item disassembled and fit in the slot. I was told that was unacceptable and I had to throw away the wheels of my pet carrier even though they fit in the slot. Per the gate agent, it had to be 1 piece. That's the spirit of Spirit- screw the customer to try and milk more money out of them.

You plan your itineraries too closely together. My Albuquerque flight to Las Vegas was delayed by 45 minutes. Upon arriving in Las Vegas I missed my flight to Portland by 5 minutes, doors closed on a group of us!! Then another delay in Las Vegas from 10:11 schedule to 11:35 pm departure. Arrived in Portland @ 2:40 am. Had to take Uber to get to my sister’s house. On the other hand your crew members were friendly and professional. PLEASE IMPROVE YOUR FLIGHT PLANS AND BE RESPONSIVE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS NEEDS!!!!

The flight was minimally delayed and after landing we needed to wait an hour, hungry, thirsty, and with other customers improper behavior. Flight was good and quick, boarding was delayed but quick. Thanks

Every last departure to get to our two destinations was horrible delayed putting us way after midnight to get to home and had to pay extra day for parking due to them getting us back to Myrtle Beach airport after midnight. The attendant on our flight from Newark decided to spray disinfected down the aisles and cause our eyes mouth and throat to burn and thanks to that we have suffered sinusitis. Shame on Kayak for having this airline on your site.

One of the worst flights ever. I got to the airport early for my 6:48 pm flight and tried to get on the 4:30 ish flight. The gate agent was one of the worst customer service people in my 20 yrs of flying Delta. Very rude and wouldn’t even talk to me about riding standby. Then flight took off 3 hrs late and when Landed in Atlanta, the gate people wouldn’t even try to get me on the plane. It was still there but door was closed. For all of my almost 2 million miles, the worst experience from Delta. I am highly disappointed as it was not my fault I have to sleep in Atlanta and not Jacksonville Florida

The Angst and the Joy of Celebrating Pride Month in a Small Town

In New York’s suburban and rural communities, where L.G.B.T.Q. people can feel more isolated, Pride events often hold special meaning.

More than two million people will fill the streets of Manhattan on Sunday for the New York City Pride March. But in small towns across the New York region in recent weeks, the march’s buoyant spirit has already gotten a head start.

In the bucolic villages of the Hudson Valley and the conservative towns of Long Island, Pride events have drawn a wide range of people: gay and transgender adults who make their lives outside the urban centers that have been the community’s traditional haven, young people who recently came out of the closet, and straight parents who want to demonstrate inclusivity to their children — no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Jamie Creamer, 38, who lives in Patchogue, on the South Shore of Long Island, attended a Pride event there with her wife and their two young children, “to start setting an example,” she said.

“This is our community. This is our town,” she said. “My son plays sports in this town, and I’m a coach in this town. If we want to make a difference, we’ve got to start with ourselves.”

The New York City Pride March began as a commemoration of the 1969 Stonewall riots, widely viewed as the start of the modern L.G.B.T.Q. rights movement. Since then, Americans’ support for L.G.B.T.Q. people has soared to somewhere between 60 and 70 percent in recent polls . For many people, that has turned Pride from the radical celebration of a riot against the police into a sort of secular holiday, with rainbows adorning everything from subway ads and police cars to limited-edition merchandise rolled out each June at big-box stores.

“We can build inclusivity in our own community. We don’t have to leave to go where we’re accepted; we can be right here showing pride for us.”

But despite those gains, a backlash has grown since same-sex marriage became legal nationwide in 2015. In recent years, states across the country have passed laws banning drag performances and transgender health care. Protests and attacks have targeted L.G.B.T.Q. events and their supporters.

For L.G.B.T.Q. people in smaller towns, day-to-day life is often lived with a nagging anxiety “in the back of our minds,” said James Diele-Stein, 43, who co-founded Patchogue Pride in Suffolk County. Like other small-town Pride events, it is both a celebration of the local community and a political statement to the world at large that gay and transgender people exist, despite sometimes hostile circumstances.

“I think the more and more we have these celebrations, the more and more it becomes a little bit of the norm,” he said. “It lets people feel a little more comfortable, especially out in public.”

On the other side of Long Island, Nick Rowley, 22, attended a festival in Huntington, his hometown on the North Shore.

Celebrating close to home was a big relief, he said. Getting into New York City can be a hassle, especially when two million other spectators are headed there too. And then there is the expense: Round-trip train fare is over $25, and gay bars in the city often charge a cover of $40 or more just to walk in the door.

But more than anything else, he said, small town Pride makes an important statement, both for L.G.B.T.Q. people in the area and for straight people who may not realize their co-workers and neighbors are gay or transgender.

“It shows that queer people exist,” Mr. Rowley said. “You can hate us. You can like us. But we’re here.”

The Long Island Pride festival in Huntington has been held for decades. But many events across the region began in just the last few years, produced by residents who wanted to build a sense of community for L.G.B.T.Q. people, and their friends, who live outside major urban areas.

Long Island has become a culture war battleground in recent months.

In February, Bruce Blakeman, the county executive of the region’s most populous county, Nassau on Long Island, issued an order that barred transgender women from playing on women’s sports teams at county-owned sports facilities.

A court struck down that order last month, saying Mr. Blakeman had overstepped his authority, but last week the County Legislature voted in favor of the ban , enshrining it into law.

Those tensions weighed on some who attended Pride events on Long Island in June.

Anne Kayser, 69, arrived at the pride festival in Northport, in neighboring Suffolk County, with her wife, Ronnie Rubin, 75. This was only the second year Northport held a Pride event, and Ms. Kayser said she was thrilled by the increased visibility in a town that can sometimes feel hostile.

In a parking lot next to the event, Ms. Rubin said, she heard a man say, “What’s wrong with American flags? Why aren’t there American flags?”

“And I said, stupidly, maybe, ‘What’s wrong with gay flags?’” she added. “And he turned to me and he said, ‘You.’”

Nearby, Elliot Baravarian, 15, stood in a Girl Scouts vest passing out brochures about how to support L.G.B.T.Q. young people. It was part of his project for a Gold Award, the highest award achievable in the Girl Scouts. His mother, Jeannie Baravarian, 51, looked on proudly.

“You need to help people feel more included and seen,” Ms. Baravarian said. “Especially in smaller communities.”

Elliot said he felt lucky because “there are a lot of people who aren’t girls in Girl Scouts” and many do not feel that they can be open about their identities.

While he is “very open about being trans,” he said, being a queer young person in the suburbs can feel lonely. Pride events like Northport’s help.

“It almost takes a weight off your shoulders,” said Elliot. “Like I’m not alone.”

One of the smallest communities in the region to have its own Pride festivities was Dobbs Ferry, a commuter village hugging the Hudson River with a population of roughly 11,000.

Lynn Goodman, who leads the Human Rights Advisory Committee for the town of Greenburgh, of which Dobbs Ferry is a part, said she was inspired to start the event in 2021 after a transgender friend of her daughter’s was verbally harassed in another town.

The first festival happened in nearby Tarrytown; it moved to Dobbs Ferry the next year.

“It’s a labor of love,” Ms. Goodman said.

In Lewisboro, a town of 12,000 deep in the woods on the other side of Westchester County, Pride this year was held in a leafy park, in a wooden pavilion adorned with a Lions Club emblem. The celebration began four years ago , when drag queen story hours were drawing protests in some New York towns .

“I know there are the large events, like in New York, but we felt it was important to do it for the sense of community.”

An ice cream vendor gave out free scoops of Ben & Jerry’s. A local real estate agent and representatives from an animal shelter set up tables to advertise their services.

Michelle Klein was there with two of her three children, one of whom, Alex, is nonbinary, and her boyfriend, Dave McQuillan. He wore a rainbow cowboy hat, with dozens of Crayola-colored rhinestones glued to his bald head.

Mr. McQuillan’s two dogs were there too, decked out in rainbow-themed doggy couture for the “Pet Pride Parade.” The children had dressed the dogs, Shea and Roscoe, for the parade, which doubled as a contest of canine charisma. Roscoe wore a shirt that said: “This dog loves Pride.” Shea’s shirt declared him to be a regular “A-Paw-Lo.”

Alex, who starts eighth grade in the fall, said they chose the shirt because Apollo is “the bisexual god of Greek mythology.”

The pet parade was a family-friendly touch that Ms. Klein and her children appreciated, even though neither dog won top honors. (They were bested by a white poodle whose pompadour was dyed rainbow colors, and a pet chicken named Cody who charmed the judges.)

In Patchogue, Jeffrey Miller, 39, and Andrea Miller, 37, brought their three children, ages 4, 3 and 9 months, to the Pride festival. They are regulars at local drag story hours and other Pride events, Ms. Miller said.

If their children grow up to be gay or transgender, “they’re going to know mom and dad are cool with it,” she said.

“We don’t know who our children will be or who they’ll love when they’re older,” she added. “So we’ve always just wanted them to grow up in an environment where it’s like, ‘Hey, this is just people and we’re just having fun.’”
