Why Ratt Reached a Crossroads With ‘Dancing Undercover’

During the first few years of Ratt 's career, the California band had proven to be one of the most reliable hit-makers within the high-flying hair metal movement, joining peers like Motley Crue , Bon Jovi and Dokken in invading America's airwaves, MTV and Top 40 charts, with no apparent end in sight.

But as Ratt prepared to unveil their third album in as many years, Dancing Undercover , on Aug. 9, 1986, band members Stephen Pearcy (vocals), Robbin Crosby (guitar), Warren DeMartini (guitar), Juan Croucier (bass) and Bobby Blotzer (drums) would face the first signs that perhaps this pop-metal utopia they helped establish would not, in fact, last forever.

When it came to the recording of Dancing Undercover , it was very much business as usual for Ratt – beginning with the return to Los Angeles' Village Recorders studios and producer Beau Hill, who had already shepherded 1984's Out of the Cellar and 1985's Invasion of Your Privacy to platinum sales. But as drummer Blotzer later admitted in a 2010 interview with the House of Hair 's Ray Van Horn: “We weren’t prepared for that record, and it’s common knowledge. Our manager put a $50,000 deposit on a studio and it wasn’t refundable, which is what he told us. We weren’t ready. We were in a very costly recording studio writing songs and working them out."

In other words, Ratt were under much pressure and time constraints to deliver the goods, and that helps explain why their third album lacked that home-run hit (and, tellingly, a power ballad) to guarantee the sales and airplay they'd grown accustomed to. Instead, singles "Dance," "Slip of the Lip" and the surprisingly heavy "Body Talk" failed to rise any higher than No. 59 on the chart and received only moderate MTV spins. Other album cuts like "One Good Lover," Drive Me Crazy" and "Looking for Love" never got much exposure, even though they included all of the pop-metal hallmarks that worked on earlier records: strong riffs, sizzling solos and simple but catchy choruses.

If anything, fan and critical reactions appeared to indicate that Ratt's songwriting was becoming stagnant over time, though DeMartini disputed this in a 2010 interview with Rock 'n Roll Cocktail 's Jason Miller: "I think that 'Body Talk' was a pretty heavy song compared to what we had done before. When you compare it to 'Lay It Down,' that was heavy but mid-tempo. I don’t think we had done anything as heavy as 'Body Talk' since the Ratt EP."

Many of the new songs were certainly grittier than what had become before, but, as the guitarist also conceded, "That was about as far as we were pushing the envelope."

This failure to experiment, even under duress from time constraints in the studio, left Ratt vulnerable to being surpassed by the next generation of L.A. rockers like Cinderella and Poison . The latter band was actually invited to open shows on Dancing Undercover 's tour and proceeded to routinely challenge the headliners with more colorful outfits and energetic set – perhaps more in line with what Ratt's audience was expecting than what they got from the now increasingly black-clad older band.

In any case, Ratt's gradual career decline was evident to anyone who was paying attention – or who could do the math: Out of the Cellar had gone triple platinum, Invasion of your Privacy had gone double platinum and Dancing Undercover ground to a trickle just beyond the single platinum mark. While this would have been a lofty, coveted sales figure to most any other band, you didn't have to be a statistician to predict which way Ratt's career was trending.

Sure enough, 1988’s Reach for the Sky  remained true to this negative sales trend, as did 1990’s Detonator , leaving Ratt even more helpless than other hair metal bands once Nirvana and their grunge buddies came along and wiped popular music’s slate clean. Ratt would eventually break up, make up, tour as two separate entities and record the occasional new studio album despite the loss of Crosby to a heroin overdose in 2001 (following years struggling with HIV). But Dancing Undercover came to epitomize the beginning of the end.

Perhaps Blotzer summarized it best in the interview with Van Horn: "While there’s some songs I really like on that record, there’s stuff I can’t even listen to. I just think there’s stuff on there that’s really sub-par, but then again, that record sold $1.8 million, so I can’t snub my nose at it. I just think we could’ve done better, obviously.”

RATT's STEPHEN PEARCY To Perform Entire 'Out Of The Cellar' Album On 'Back In The Cellar' 2024 Tour

RATT lead singer and founder Stephen Pearcy will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band's classic debut album, "Out Of The Cellar" , by performing it in its entirety and in sequence for the first time in 2024.

Pearcy says: "I'm playing the 'Out Of The Cellar' record 2024 as it was laid into the grooves, 1-10 to this day. With a kick in the ass, tight, like the record.

"We just did a show recently and played the record in its entirety for the first time ever. It went over great, refreshing all these years later. Learned a lot. Because my sets are longer than the record, obviously I'm playing ALL the other RATT songs necessary to get the job done."

So far the following shows have been announced:

Jan. 18 - Baltimore, MD - Rams Head Live Jan. 19 - Glenside, PA - Keswick Theater Jan. 20 - Uncasville, CT - Mohegan Sun (with QUIET RIOT and VIXEN) Jan. 21 - Patchogue, NY - Patchogue Theatre For The Performing Arts Feb. 16 - Las Vegas, NV - The Strat Hotel & Casino (with NIGHT RANGER) Feb. 17 - Las Vegas, NV - The Strat Hotel & Casino (with NIGHT RANGER) Feb. 29 - Mar. 07 - Port Canaveral - The 80s Cruise Mar. 30 - Bloomington, IL - Grossinger Motors Arena (with VINCE NEIL and QUIET RIOT) May 04 - Columbia, MD - M3 Fest at Merriweather Post Pavillion

Pearcy most recently performed "Out Of The Cellar" in its entirety with his solo band on December 29, 2023 at the Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, California. It marked Stephen 's first time playing the LP from front to back.

RATT exploded on to the national scene in 1984 with the release of "Out Of The Cellar" . Featuring an undeniable hook and legendary music video, lead single "Round And Round" hit No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, while "Out Of The Cellar" reached No. 7 on the Billboard Top 200 and was certified triple platinum. Two more charting singles followed with "Back For More" and "Wanted Man" . RATT started the tour as an opening act, but by the end of the tour had climbed to arena headliner.

RATT returned in 1985 with its second full-length album, "Invasion Of Your Privacy" . Certified double platinum and also reaching No. 7 on the Billboard 200, "Invasion Of Your Privacy" also featured the classics "Lay It Down" (No. 40 on Billboard Hot 100) and "You're In Love" .

"Dancing Undercover" followed in 1986 as RATT toured North America with a then-brand new Los Angeles band called POISON as the opening act. Lead single "Dance" hit the Billboard Hot 100 and spawned another music video hit with "Slip Of The Lip" , while "Body Talk" was featured in a key scene in the Eddie Murphy film "The Golden Child" . "Dancing Undercover" became RATT 's third consecutive platinum album and reached No. 26 on the Billboard 200.

1988's "Reach For The Sky" saw RATT return to the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 album charts, peaking at No. 17. Driven by the bluesy hit and MTV favorite "Way Cool Jr." , "Reach For The Sky" was also certified platinum and became RATT 's fourth album in a row to move well over a million copies. "I Want A Woman" was also a successful single and the video captured the excitement and energy of RATT live.

RATT released its last full-length record of the Atlantic era, "Detonator" , in 1990. Music was changing, but "Detonator" was still a success, peaking at No. 23 on the Billboard 200 and going gold. It was the first RATT album to feature major outside songwriting contributions ( Desmond Child , Diane Warren ) and guests ( Jon Bon Jovi , Michael Schenker ). Lead single "Lovin' You's A Dirty Job" hit No. 18 on the rock chart while the power ballad "Giving Yourself Away" reached No. 39.

In 1991, they released the single "Nobody Rides For Free" from the hit film "Point Break" , starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze .

In January 2021, Pearcy told SiriusXM 's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" that he was open to the idea of making a new RATT album with all the surviving members of the band's classic lineup.

RATT hasn't released any new music since 2010's "Infestation" LP.

Where to watch movies for free in Moscow this summer

People watching a movie in a Pioner 24-hour open-air cinema in Gorky Park.

People watching a movie in a Pioner 24-hour open-air cinema in Gorky Park.

Temporary cinemas will be popping up across Moscow very soon, starting from July 16. All of the spots are brilliant examples of either constructivist or avant-garde architecture, so expect striking settings. A selection of classic Soviet films will be aired using cinematic equipment from the last century. All the screenings are free although online registration is required beforehand, while there will also be guided tours of the spaces, organized by the “Moscow through the Engineer's Eyes” company.

Registration will be open soon at mos-kino.ru

Bread factory

Following the success of former factories transformed into art spaces (VinZavod, Arma, Trekhgornaya manufacture), Khlebzavod (“bread factory”) No 9 is one newly opened joint that is attracting creative types from all over the city. The movie Time! Forward! will be screened in the building’s boiler room on July 16. It follows workers from the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, one of the largest steel companies in Russia, and is based on a novel by Soviet writer Valentin Kataev.

What’s more, Khlebzavod is a monument to constructivist architecture. Where better to watch such a film?

Roof of the Narkomfin Building

Narkomfin Building / Kirill Zykov/Moskva Agency

The Narkomfin Building was originally designed to house high ranking employees at the Commissariat of Finance. It was built by architects Moisei Ginsburg and Ignaty Milinis. Also a fine example of constructivism, it’s currently in a state of disrepair, locked down, and fairly difficult to get into - which is like a red flag to a bull for more adventurous types.

However, on July 30 the place will be opened up and people will be welcomed onto the roof to watch the film Faith and Truth.

Khrushchyovka courtyard

Cheremushki district / Alexander Scherbak/TASS

A courtyard located in the 9th experimental block of the Novye Cheremushki district will turn into an outdoor cinema this summer. Cheremushki is the first district where Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchyov decided to build the iconic Khrushchyovka apartment blocks in the 1950s. As a result, thousands of Russians were given their own pads after decades living huddled together in communal apartments known as kommunalka .

Cheremushki is the adapted film-version of Dmitry Shostakovich’s operetta and will be shown here on Aug. 6. The organizers of the multiple screenings - the Moskino cinema chain - say they will revive the Soviet tradition of neighbors meeting in courtyards for a good old tongue wag. There will also be a guided tour of the block.

Address to be confirmed at mos-kino.ru

Pioneers Palace

Pioneers Palace / Legion Media

If you want a slice of the postwar Soviet avant-garde style, head to the Pioneers Palace at Vorobyevy Gory. Pioneers Palaces were youth centers for sport, creativity, and hobbies for Young Pioneers (a communist organization for children) during the Soviet Union. There were dance classes, martial arts, drawing, and many other activities.

To Love a Man , a movie about two young architects building a new town in Siberia, will be shown here on Aug. 22. There will also be a lecture about building experiments in the 20th century.

The last cinema venue remains a secret. On Aug. 27 there will be a screening, but at the moment no one knows where. Information will appear on mos-kino.ru but those who attend all four screenings above will be able to guess the last location.

A talk about architecture and Soviet history also will be hosted here.
