Peter Bruntnell: Journey to the Sun review – Lush songs of human kindness

peter bruntnell journey to the sun

Beloved by a compact group of fans and ignored by everyone else, cult artists continue to release music that is pretty much heads and shoulders above the stuff that sells millions. In that long list, the name of Peter Bruntnell stands out for a number of reasons. One is that he has been delivering quality songs for more than 25 years; another is because the likes of Peter Buck, Willy Vlautin and Kathleen Edwards have been extolling his virtues as and when appropriate.

ou can guess by his admirers that Bruntnell favours an Americana approach, yet his style isn't as obvious as it might seem, and from one album to the next he tends to assuredly twist this way and that. With Journey to the Sun, the man whose songs NME once noted should be placed on school curriculums has done  it again.

While Bruntnell might be one of the music world’s most unassuming songwriters, his songs are inherently immodest – they regularly burst with the spirit of human kindness and are melodically lush, with meaningful multilevel lyrics, and (here especially) o depths of layered instrumentation. What he doesn’t have is a music industry bigwig on his side, working on if not world domination then at least indie/outsider movie and television sync opportunities.

That’s such a pity – on Journey to the Sun, not even a misstep cover of Francis McPeake’s Wild Mountain Thyme spoils the fun.

Peter Bruntnell “Journey To The Sun”

Domestico records, 2021, a lockdown collection of melancholy introspection with a compelling new musical addition..

peter bruntnell journey to the sun

Bruntnell wastes little time in putting his new toys to great effect. A distant echoing bazouki to opener ‘Dandelion’ makes way for his familiar rasp as he rues, “those who thought time could be bought, are sleeping underground” accompanying the chill warning, “We are not too young to die.” The tempo is suitably funereal.

A cheerier sounding synth starts off ‘Lucifer Morning Star’, complemented by a gentle acoustic strum that creates a lighter pop vibe to mask deeper feelings of guilt and blame. The relentlessness of ‘Runaway Car’, urges an escape from endless past mistakes, “you’ve got to run while you still can/making the same mistakes over and over again”. The synth swirls into a guitar solo that sounds very CSNY.

The album contains two instrumentals and one cover. A writer of Bruntnell’s ability does not need to pad out his records because there is certainly not a dud track here. Rather the instrumentals offer a break from the bleakness of the lyrics, Both ‘The Antwerp Effect’ and ‘Moon Committee’ are short, slightly hypnotic interludes, each a Brian Eno moment perhaps? Everyone knows ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ to which Bruntnell gives a wistful sheen.

The album’s title appears in ‘Heart of Straw’ where “flowers and sweet salutations will be sent by some/ for a vague but necessary journey to the sun”. The breaks between verses only amplify the layers of remorse.

Bruntnell gives full vent to his new synth on ‘You’d Make A Good Widow’ with a cosmic intro that would do justice to Hawkwind. From that flourish emerges a more typical rendition of Bruntnell’s Americana, reflective and very dark. ‘Merrion’ is another superb example of his craft. Again, there is an underlying menace, not towards anyone in particular but more self-critical. Orchestral layers and harmonies give ‘Dharma Liar’ a hymnal quality while ’Waiting For Clive’ is the album’s nadir, not in terms of quality but mood. Closing out this gem of a record is ‘Mutha’ , whose gentler piano line suggests happier times to come or is that wishful thinking?

Peter Bruntnell is a songwriter eminently qualified to probe the lockdown psyche and on ‘Journey To The Sun’ he mines deep seams of contrition. Is it too much to hope that, finally, this record might bring him the long-overdue recognition he deserves?

Product description, product description.

Rolling Stone magazine once declared Peter Bruntnell to be 'one of England's best kept musical secrets'. England has thus far successfully managed to keep Pete a secret for all this time, even from itself. 'Maybe this will be the album to finally give him the worldwide superstar recognition he deserves!', enthused every other Peter Bruntnell album review from the last 20+ years, with an admirably unwavering optimism. 'If we lived in a just world, Peter Bruntnell would by now be in the middle of his third or fourth global arena tour, his biggest worry working out how to courier his latest armful of Grammy awards back to the UK so his butler could have them installed in the west wing of mansion by the time he got home,' said a feature in The Guardian in 2016, intent on letting the cat out of the bag, but failing miserably. Needless to say, we don’t live in a just world and Peter Bruntnell is still having to get by without a butler. Peter’s new album, Journey To The Sun, will do little to dispel this fantasy of world domination, but it remains unlikely to become in any way a reality. He will remain the secret singer-songwriter, lauded by the likes of Kathleen Edwards, The Delines, Rumer, various members of R.E.M., Son Volt and whatever the collective noun is for several large real ale festivals full of mainly manly middle-aged music geeks. Journey To The Sun has more than a whiff of death, longing, leaving & regret - all the cheer you’d expect from a record written and recorded amidst lockdown - with the lack of live shows taking its toll on Pete, it brought about the purchase of a new synthesiser, subsequently followed by a bouzouki. This has resulted in an album with more synth than your average Americana fan would knowingly expose themselves to. Half of the lyrics to the new songs are credited as having been co-written between Pete and his mysterious - possibly imaginary - long time collaborator, Bill Ritchie. The album was recorded and self-produced at Pete’s home in Devon. 'Self-produced' and 'recorded at home' being the ultimate buzz words in this quest for a hit record. It features Pete playing the majority of the instruments, aided only by mastering engineer Peter Linnane adding various vintage keyboards along with Iain Sloan, who was invited to add pedal steel to Dharma Liar.

In the very self-deprecating press release that accompanies Peter's latest album, the phrase 'Maybe this will be the album to finally give him the worldwide superstar recognition he deserves' features high up. I'm pretty sure I’ve used a similar phrase the last four times this supremely talented Devon singer-songwriter has released material. His lockdown album features a surprising cover of Wild Mountain Thyme and two synth-driven instrumentals among smart and melancholic tracks like Dandelion, You'd Make A Great Widow and Runaway Car. I'm getting tired of saying this: He's brilliant, so treat yourself and buy it - ***** --Dave Esson, Scottish Daily Express, June 11th 2021.

There are various ways we can come into contact with new music. We can stumble across it on the likes of Spotify or YouTube, we can catch a support band at a gig, we can even take chance on a new act because of their name or record sleeves. But one of the nicest ways to discover a new album is through the recommendations of friends.

People can be quite tribal beings and tend to associate with like minded individuals. This is certainly true for music fans, maybe from my own age group rather than the younger beings amongst us, but this means that news of a cool new record can spread through our social networks.

One such artist who came to me this way is Peter Bruntnell , who was brought to my attention by no other than Paul Fitzgerald , promoter, writer and face about town. Those of who know Mr Fitzgerald know that his word is his bond and that it he tells you something is good you should probably at least check it out.

On hearing his recommendation of Peter Bruntnell , I downloaded his King of Madrid album and found an album of tender songs sung with a rich, honey soft voice. The style of the album veered from laid back rock to bluesy confessionals to folky reveries but all with a sense of style and an air of experience.

A Trip Down Memory Lane: The Many Saints of Newark review

Bruntnell released the follow up album Journey to the Sun earlier this year and is currently on tour to promote it. The new album follows on from the old but sounds more accomplished and confident. Again it finds Bruntnell not wanting to limit himself to too narrow a genre and has the potential to find him a wide audience of new fans.

Sun 13 were lucky enough to subject him to one of our 13 Questions features between gigs. Read on to find out more about dirty protests, fake chicken and walking back from the pub naked.

1. Where are you and what are you doing? How is that working out? Peter Bruntnell : “Had a gig in Herne Hill London last night so having a lazy morning , then driving to Nottingham for a gig.”

2. When did you last make yourself do something you didn’t want to? PB : “Getting out of bed yesterday at 8am.”

3. Who is the nicest ‘celebrity’ you’ve met? PB : “No such thing.”

4. When did you last get into an argument? PB : “When my dog had a dirty protest on the kitchen floor.”

5. What’s your favourite food? PB : “Currently Bang Bang cauliflower or similar with fake chicken. Sour dough bread with anything. Home made curry with Al’s kitchen on YouTube.”

6. When did you last consider quitting social media? PB : “Not yet.”

13 Questions with Bernie Connor

7. What’s the best night out you’ve ever had? PB : “Opening for and then watching Son Volt at the New Daisy theatre in Memphis. The stage was like a Wild West Town.”

8. Vinyl, CD, MP3 or Streaming? PB : “CD and Vinyl.”

9. What words of warning would you give your younger self? PB : “Don’t learn to play guitar!”

10. When were you last told off? PB : “When I walked back from the pub naked, the police spotted me and told me to put my clothes back on.”

11. What has been your favourite decade for music? PB : “’60s ’70s and ’80s. After that it went to shit. Britpop?”

12. Tell us a secret PB : “My first sexual experience involved the Ice Warriors from Dr Who.”

13. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.  Is there anything else you’d like to say? PB : “Having another lie in.”
