Motorcycle ride around Australia (Harley Davidson)

Motorcycle ride around Australia (Harley Davidson)

Embarking on a motorcycle ride around Australia on a Harley Davidson is the ultimate adventure for any motorcycle enthusiast. The vast landscapes, diverse terrains, and breathtaking views make this journey an unforgettable experience. However, crossing Australia, a country as vast as England 31 times, on a motorbike takes adventure to another level. Riding across deserted expanses, following straight lines that stretch as far as the eye can see, and cruising along golden sand beaches make the journey an adventure in its own right. Quentin embarked on his first Working Holiday Visa in New Zealand before deciding to tour Australia on a motorbike. In this article, we share his experiences and offer practical advice to help you prepare for your motorcycle road trip.

Table of Contents

Preparation and planning

Choose the right harley davidson.

Ensure your Harley is suited for long-distance travel. Models like the Road King, Electra Glide, or Street Glide are excellent choices due to their comfort, durability, and ample storage space.

Essential Gear

Invest in quality riding gear, including a helmet, gloves, riding jacket, and boots. Consider weather-appropriate clothing and rain gear. Pack essentials like a first aid kit, tire repair kit, and tools.

Also invest in quality camping gear, such as a mattress, tent, and sleeping bag. After riding 800 km on a motorcycle, a good night’s sleep can be very useful. Additionally, this equipment can be resold or brought back with you to Europe.

Route Planning

To embark on a motorcycle tour of Australia, it takes more than just a love for motorcycles and riding for 10 hours a day. You must also be willing to live without too much comfort and have experience riding a motorcycle. Australia is a wild country, with unsealed tracks, animals jumping on the roads, road trains, and other challenges . Any biker will quickly realize that they’ve left their comfort zone. In some isolated areas, help can take 4-5 hours to arrive, so you must be aware of the risks.

To fully appreciate the experience, you must also enjoy traveling solo , although you’ll still meet plenty of people who will be interested in your trip, especially in the Outback if you’re friendly and approachable.

Australia’s size and diverse geography require careful route planning. Popular routes include:

  • The Great Ocean Road: Stretching along the south-eastern coast, it offers stunning coastal views and winding roads.
  • The Nullarbor Plain: This vast, treeless plain offers a unique riding experience, but ensure you’re well-prepared for its remote stretches.
  • The East Coast: Riding from Sydney to Cairns provides a mix of coastal beauty and vibrant cities.
  • The Outback: Exploring the Red Centre, including Uluru and Alice Springs, gives a taste of Australia’s rugged interior.

Check the Weather

Planning your trip according to the seasons is also crucial , as you can’t be in the mountains of Victoria in winter, the Outback in South Australia, or Southern Western Australia and New South Wales in the summer. Additionally, the wet season and cyclones make northern Australia difficult to navigate from October.

You must love riding and exploring, as Australia is a huge country. And you have to be ready to ride in all kinds of weather conditions, such as rain, wind, cold, or heat. However, you should plan your route wisely according to the seasons. If you don’t enjoy riding, it may take you two years to complete the tour of the country!

On the Road

Safety first.

Always wear protective gear and ensure your motorcycle is well-maintained. Regularly check tire pressure, oil levels, and brakes. Carry spare parts and tools for minor repairs.

Avoid driving at night , especially in rural areas, as wildlife tends to be more active and can pose a hazard to motorists. It’s also important to be aware of the road conditions and hazards, including unpaved roads, flooding and weather conditions.

Be aware of road trains , which are long transport trucks that can be several kilometers long. These vehicles can create significant wind gusts and take longer to stop than regular vehicles.

Use a reliable GPS or map. Mobile phone coverage can be spotty in remote areas, so have physical maps as a backup. Inform someone about your route and expected arrival times.

Fuel and Supplies

Fuel stations can be far apart, especially in remote areas. Fill up whenever possible and carry extra fuel. Stock up on water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized.

Respect wildlife and environment

Australia’s roads are home to diverse wildlife. Be cautious, especially at dawn and dusk when animals are most active. Adhere to speed limits and road signs to ensure safety.

Enjoy the journey

Take time to appreciate the stunning landscapes, local culture, and hidden gems along the way. Stop at scenic lookouts, local cafes, and roadside attractions to make the most of your adventure.

A few tips while riding around Australia

In Australia, the roads are generally well-maintained. But it’s important to be prepared for various road conditions, especially if you venture off the main roads. Here are some tips to keep in mind while on the road:

  • Drive on the left-hand side of the road in Australia.
  • Observe the speed limits . The maximum speed limit on highways is typically 110km/h, although it can vary in certain areas. In built-up areas, the speed limit is usually 50 km/h. Highways in Australia are typically toll-free. Except around major cities like Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne where electronic tolling is in place. It’s important to pay the toll online, as there are no payment counters on the road sections.

Quentin’s experience on a Harley Davidson

“During my time in Australia, I worked in NSW and VIC during the spring and summer months, which allowed me to explore the Great Alpine Road, the Great Ocean Road and other scenic routes in the area on my days off. After that, I headed towards WA along the coast and then went up to Darwin in the winter before finally reaching Alice Springs. In the end, I returned to Cairns and then to Sydney to sell my bike in the early spring, which is the ideal time to sell as it is easier to find buyers.

Being on a Working Holiday Visa was a great compromise as it allowed me to travel for 2 or 3 weeks at a time and then work for a month before continuing my travels. Working in various areas of Australia allowed me to discover the different cultures and lifestyles. Locals were always eager to share advice on less touristy places to visit, which was a great way to explore the hidden gems of Australia.

Touring Australia on a motorcycle: A project that had been in my head for a long time

Since I started traveling, I became immediately hooked on the idea of traveling by motorcycle . The feeling of freedom that comes with it is incomparable. Going around Australia had always been a tempting idea, but I was hesitant at first because it is such a big project. However, I eventually realized that it was now or never and decided to go for it. After all, we often regret the things we never try!

Riding the nullarbor in Australia

Getting ready – How did you prepare for this experience?

To prepare for my motorcycle trip in Australia, I made sure to have prior experience riding motorcycles. After that, I scoured forums for advice and tips from other riders who had been to Australia. I also reached out to people who had ridden there before to gain a better understanding of what to expect. Additionally, I invested in a biker Atlas , which I highly recommend to any rider in Australia. The Atlas provided a list of the top 200 trips to take in the country. It was an invaluable resource during my trip – it was my Bible! ( Australia Motorcycle Atlas with 200 top rides – Hema maps )

Itinerary in Australia

Living conditions on the road

On the mechanical side, I was fortunate to have had almost no issues, except for a puncture at the start. I made the decision to purchase a 2017 motorcycle with only 3000 km on the clock . This reduced the likelihood of mechanical problems compared to an older bike. It’s important to maintain your motorcycle regularly, which includes oil changes, air filter replacements, and other necessary upkeep.

When it came to accommodations, I primarily used a tent. Except when I was able to find an affordable hostel or backpacker lodge. I recommend investing in a good quality tent that is lightweight, easy to set up, and provides adequate protection from the elements.

In terms of packing, there are a few essential items you’ll need for your motorcycle trip, such as oil, coolant, and a lock. If you plan on traveling through the Outback, you’ll also need a 5-liter can of gasoline , and a minimum of 5 liters of water , as drinkable water may be scarce or expensive in certain areas. For food, I packed canned goods, fresh fruit, and cereal bars. You may also consider bringing a portable gas cooker for more comfortable cooking, but be aware that it will take up additional space and require more water for cooking and cleaning.

When it comes to camping gear , a good quality tent, sleeping bag, and inflatable pillow are essential. You’ll want to travel light, so make sure to choose lightweight and compact equipment. Keep in mind that comfort may be limited, but the freedom of the open road and the stunning scenery of Australia more than make up for it.

Campsite with motorbike in Australia

My favourite region

Australia offers a vast array of breathtaking landscapes that are worth exploring on a motorcycle. Although the Outback may seem monotonous, it’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else. Imagine being alone in the middle of nowhere, with no hills or mountains in sight, and having a roadhouse every 200 kilometers. It’s a unique feeling that is hard to describe. The Great Alpine Road in Victoria offers stunning views of snow-capped mountains and lush greenery. Riding through the winding roads of Cape Tribulation in Queensland is an unforgettable experience. And who could forget the enchanting feeling of riding around Uluru – Ayers Rock on a motorcycle? Finally, I can’t miss mentioning the thrill of riding on the pristine beaches of Lucky Bay in Western Australia. All in all, there is something special to be found in every corner of Australia, making it the perfect destination for motorcycle enthusiasts.

Uluru Australia

Why did I chose this motorcycle model?

When I was planning my trip to Australia, I initially considered getting a trail bike since many parts of the country are known for their off-road terrain. However, after researching more, I realized that there are plenty of long, straight stretches of tarmac where a more comfortable custom-type motorcycle would be better suited. Especially when covering distances of up to 800km in a day. Of course, a trail bike would be more practical on gravel and dirt roads, but traveling alone in remote areas can be dangerous. It’s also recommended to carry a satellite beacon in case of emergencies.

As for choosing a Harley-Davidson , the prices in Australia were much more affordable compared to Europe. Making it a good opportunity for me to take the trip around the country on one. Back home, I ride a Kawa (kz650 from 1980), but I wanted to try something different for this adventure.

Thanks Mate I too am planning to ride a lap of Australia in September..no matter what the conditions are..I am 70yrs old and finding the right bike took some doing, on a pension..The lap is mainly sealed road, so even though a CB500x would be the go, the price was beyond me..I am flying in from Siam to see family in Perth. I am also planning a world trip Bangkok to Vladivostok and across to Iran and then back down thru India and Myanmar ..So I thought I would practise on a lap of Australia,, I have settled on a used Honda 1100cc as it has the cruise look of it, rather than the cafe racer look and feel,,and finding a cheap trail bike within a month was just not there..I have a CB1300 so know abit about big road bikes..though I have been riding for over 50yrs and owned everything from a 50cc scooter to a Harley. Thanks for the tips..Always good to hear other stories and routes..take care on the road Mate.. Never know might pass you in mongolia or somewhere..

5 of the best motorcycle rides in Australia

This article was originally published in June 2018 and updated in June 2023.

Many Aussie roads feel purpose built for motorcycle riding, but some stand out. From scenic bends across mountain ranges, adventures through rainforests and cruising alongside the ocean, these are our top picks for an unforgettable ride.

1. The Oxley Highway from Wauchope to Walcha, NSW

This 163km stretch features exhilarating hairpin turns up and over the famous Great Dividing Range through thick rainforest and trees entwined in vines.

This ride not only offers breathtaking scenery including mountain views, it also offers a variety of corners making it a truly enjoyable ride.

Late spring or early summer is likely to offer ideal riding weather for most looking to take this bucket-list trip. This timing usually not only offers a comfortable warm temperature but is also likely to be early enough to beat the start of the rainy season.

2. The Great Ocean Road, VIC

Our team votes this as one of the most beautiful roads in Australia with around 120km of smooth asphalt stretching from Torquay to Glanaire, past the 12 Apostles.

While beautiful, it can be challenging for some riders. Look out for congested convoys of tourists stopping and starting along the way for photo opportunities. Roads are narrow, and the buses can be wide, so riding carefully and staying alert to vehicles is key.

The Great Ocean Road, Victoria

3. The Black Spur, VIC

Famed for its lush tall rainforests and giant ferns lining the road, this 30km ride lies between the towns of Healesville and Narbethong and is part of the Maroondah Highway.

Sweeping corners and thick surrounding foliage offer an unforgettable ride for motorcycle riders looking for a unique experience. On this road, riders navigate directly through the middle of a rainforest, underneath a canopy.

This can be a popular spot though and attract more drivers during weekends and summer months. So, stay alert in the tight turns if you’re riding in peak times.

4. Kangaroo Valley, NSW

Southern Highlands, NSW

There’s a couple of pretty routes to Kangaroo Valley that are also fun to ride. But riding via the Macquarie Pass will offer a view of an 822m waterfall that can add a truly special highlight to your trip.

The 8km section of the Illawarra Highway is a climb up a single-lane, twisty road that takes you the lookout at Fitzroy Falls.

5. The Lions Road, Scenic Rim, QLD

The Lions Road is a stunning 96km link from Beaudesert to Kyogle in the Scenic Rim region of the Queensland hinterland, and is well known in the bike world.

This trip is ideal for adventure seekers. It takes riders through local towns, the rainforests of Border Ranges National Park and Running Creek and Grady’s Creek.

5 Tips To Tour Australia On A Motorcycle During (Their) Summers

Exploring the vastness of Australia from coast to coast is one of those special things that you must try at least once in your lifetime, and if you love touring on a motorcycle, the open stretches of Australian road will not disappoint you. The best time to visit Australia is during their summers (December to February), which is winter in the northern hemisphere, and that also makes for a great winter escape vacation if you reside above the equator. Here are 5 of the most important tips that you need to know about touring Australia on a motorcycle.

5 Tips for Australian Motorcycle Tours

1. stay hydrated and protect your skin.

Summer temperature in Australia can reach as high as 35 degree Celsius, and we strongly recommend that you don’t venture outdoors during the middle of the day especially if you are not used to such high temperatures. According to the travel advisory issued by the Australian tourism department, the summer sun can burn your skin in less than 15 minutes! So, always make sure to cover your skin with a high SPF (>30) sunscreen lotion and stay hydrated by drinking water whenever you get the opportunity. Look for symptoms of dehydration such as headache and lack of focus and take necessary precaution to avoid being under the sun unnecessarily. A good way to avoid the strong sun is to plan your rides early in the morning, and stay indoors during the mid-day till 3:00 PM. On average, the sun sets by 7:30 PM during summer, which means you get quite a lot of time to cover ground even if you resume your ride after the hottest time of the day.

2. Plan your rides (especially if you are touring the ‘Top End’)

The Northern Territory of Australia, also commonly known as the Top End, is famous for its waterfalls and bustling tropical wildlife that comes alive during the summers (from the beginning of November). Tourists love to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site – Kakadu National Park, famous for glimpses of aboriginal culture and amazing biodiversity. Apart from Kakadu, the Top End draws tourists to its other national parks, namely, Elsey, Nitmiluk and Gregory – all of which are great spots to explore. Being on a motorcycle, you need to be prepared for the tropical rains in the region during this time. Be sure to keep your luggage covered and have appropriate tires on the motorcycle to tackle the occasional muddy patches of off-road sections. It’s also a good idea to find out whether the roads exist because rain water often submerges unpaved roads here.

motorbike tous australia

3. Watch for the speed cameras

Speed limits in Australia are strictly reinforced which means you need to keep an eye on your speed limit and stay within the demarcated maximum. One thing that trips travelers from the United States and Europe is that speed limits are kilometers per hour instead of mph. If you fail to abide by the speed limits there are speed trap cameras placed all along the highway which will definitely catch you and penalize you.

4. Brush up your outback survival skills

The Australian Outback is a particularly challenging place and it is very sparsely populated, which means if you get into trouble it’s all guts & wits that will get you out of trouble! Most of the road related injuries in the Outback happen because of unpaved road surfaces so you need to have a motorcycle that is worthy of tackling those challenges. Also, it is a good idea to never ride alone and have somebody accompany you on your trip to the Outback, preferably someone with camping skills and who knows his or her way around motorcycles. Make sure to get updated maps (you’ll need paper maps, because the internet connectivity is iffy at best) and plan your route accordingly. Carry a motorcycle repair kit, and enough food and water to last you at least a couple of days even if you do not plan to be out for more than 9 hours at a stretch.

5. Learn a little about Australian motorcycles

The Australian automobile landscape is completely different from what you would expect if you are an American or a European visiting Australia for the first time. While you might get quite a few common automobile brands, there is a vast difference in the models and makes of vehicles available here. BMW GS1250s, Tiger Triumphs, Africa Twins or Yamaha Teneres may not be as easily available as you might expect, which means you will need to find a compatible machine if you do not already have your own motorcycle. It is also a good idea to acquire an international driving license from the Automobile Association in your country before arriving here with intentions of riding or driving around.

Last but not least, getting the basics right can completely change your travel experiences. One of those is getting the best accommodation in Australia for your budget, and the second is staying safe during your motorcycling trips, which is why we strongly recommend that you wear the proper riding gear such as a Safest Motorcycle Helmet , gloves and a pair of riding boots.

Motorbike tours for the mature and senior traveller.

Best Motorcycle tours for the mature and senior traveller.

This is the time for that motorcycle trip you may have dreamt about becoming a reality.Odyssey Traveller offers you the opportunity to ride through some of the most amazing landscapes in the planet, whilst participating one one of our small group tours for mature and senior travellers.

These are self guided motorcycle tours into the depths of the states of Australia. There are two types of offering for the mature and senior traveller.

The Self guided tour for the mature traveller.

You can enjoy your own motorcycle adventure based around our small group touring programs to envelope yourself and fellow travellers in a structured touring program that has a theme and is supported by local knowledgable guides who meet you and share with you their stories in each location before you ride on to your next location often 180-240 miles (300-400 kilometres away) Your support team at odyssey will have organised the entire trip for you to upload into the GPS before you leave Sydney or Melbourne. Your personal motorbike tour may be several days in the outback or that Sydney to Perth dream ride via Uluru over several weeks that you have had the itch to enjoy. Odyssey though will look after all the arrangements, from the supply of the motorcycle rental , your helmets, riding gear including personal air bags and panniers to the soft seat for your companion if needed.

Planning your Motorcycle tour.

Bike selection is a personal choice, we can offer late model BMW’s and Honda’s to the rider as well as speciality bikes such as a Harley Davidson should that be your dream. Most of motorcycle touring is a return to the place you started for example Sydney , Melbourne or Perth , but Odyssey will also take care of the one way specific bike tour as part of the motorcycle rental program.

The tour itinerary is spaced out with comfortable distances through spectacular scenery which in this big country is not difficult to find to enjoy from National parks to treeless landscapes that glide into the horizon. Each time you break in an agreed location on your motorcycle trip itinerary there will be time to meet your local tour guide along the road travelled to learn about the place you have arrived in. The accommodation along the way and the entrances to tourist attractions in some of the most remote and interesting areas of Australia are all agreed and booked on your behalf in advance including local insurance to give your road trip dream the greatest chance of being that truly great ride you have dreamed off every chance of success.

The information we provide also offers suggestions on what sights to visit, where to get food, where to get fuel, and things of that nature to make your motorcycle adventure as smooth and carefree as possible. As with all the motorbike tours suggested by Odyssey for the mature and senior rider these tour routes have been ridden and explored by our team of advisers so you can rest assured that you are being provided with reliable, dependable information. The trips you can choose from are located in extremely popular riding destinations around Australia and New Zealand, so in order to experience the dream tour that you want, be sure to book well in advance of your projected travel dates!

Travel into the outback of Australia is best from March – Late October. You are managing heat and high sunshine days during these months avoiding the extremes diurnal temperatures and the wet season! For New Zealand all year is ok for riding if you are prepared for some extremes. If you want to choose a time period to avoid taking a Motorbike tour then it would have to be July-August. The self guided tour is suitable for the solo rider or small groups of riders who seek to ride their ride on a motorbike tour . Where you choose to ride is an individual decision though we have themed trips adapted for motorcycle touring through all the states of Australia and New Zealand.

Odyssey Traveller can also offer a guided Motorcycle tour as a private tour option to places of your choice or an adaptation of our tour programs to create the perfect motorcycle trip.

BOXING CLEVER: 2024 BMW R 1300 GS Trophy X

Make no mistake, BMW’s new R 1300 GS is a significant departure from its predecessor, the R 1250 GS. It is an exercise in nitpicking to highlight an area where the 1300 isn’t objectively better than the 1250. The 1300 and the 1250 might share the GS moniker and have the same suspension and engine configuration, but that’s about as far as the similarities go.

Ride around Australia

Everything you need to know to circumnavigate Australia. BYO Map

M y copy of Scenic Wonders of Australia was published in 1976, only three years after the opening of the Sydney Opera House – an edifice that immediately shot to the top of the list of attractions to visit, bumping the Sydney Harbour Bridge to number two.

A quick scan of the internet recently confirmed my suspicion that very little has changed in the past 40 years.

The must-sees are as they were, jiggling up and down the same top 10 list: Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, the Kimberley, Melbourne, Kakadu, the Great Ocean Road, Blue Mountains and Daintree.

And all these scenic wonders, bar Uluru, are virtually on the same street – our National Highway 1.

For the most part it’s a relatively safe, sealed and signposted route that runs over 15,000km circumnavigating the continent. Along the way there is a wide choice of accommodation, from five-star resorts to free overnight rest areas. Good food is generally available, and at worst you’ll be able to score a microwaved meat pie at a 24/7 servo. And, while it’s wise to refuel whenever your tank falls below half, a fuel range of 300km will (mostly) keep you mobile.

But there are a few things you should think about before you set off…

I’ve often been asked what motorcycle would be the most suitable to lap Oz. Most adventure bikes with dual-sport tyres will be comfortable over the long stretches and tractable in the parks and forests. But around-Australia rides have been done with a Hodaka Combat Wombat, a 1972 Harley Sportster, postie bikes and Honda Goldwings, so don’t get hung up on the choice. The BMW GS range has an enviable reputation for quality and reliability, from the original R80/GS to the latest R1200GS Rallye X. Even the smaller F800GS will handle anything that our harsh land can throw at it, and the reason you see so many Kawasaki KLR650s and Suzuki DR650s in the outback is because they can be relied on to cover maximum country at minimum cost – leaving more coin for a good steak and a good bottle of red.

Take advice on tyre choice for your particular model. While you’ll want something with stability in the gravel, you don’t need aggressive knobbies that will shred after two days on the blacktop. Beyond the black stump, your biggest potential problem will be a flat tyre. This can usually be prevented by fitting ultra-heavy-duty tubes before departure. Take a spare set with you, and don’t forget tyre levers and a hand pump. For tubeless tyres, take a repair kit and know how to use it.

It’s essential to test your set-up before you head off. You shouldn’t be carrying so much additional weight as to need major suspension adjustment, but monitor tyre pressures and static sag. Then spend two full days on your bike riding at least 500km. If your arse aches you need a more comfortable seat, and if you’re a touch sore across the shoulders consider fitting handlebar risers. If you’re not fighting fit after a two-day ride, you’ll be a wreck after a week in the saddle. An upright riding position is the key to comfort over long distances.

I keep seeing images of large adventure bikes toting aluminium panniers and topboxes; and advertisements boasting more than 100 litres of luggage capacity. Disregarding the potential weight penalty, all I can remember about riding such beasts is the wind resistance and buffeting in high wind areas; and the sphincter tightening when facing down a road train on a narrow beef development road. My reckoning is that if you can’t fit all your kit into a pair of soft panniers that rise no higher than your seat – leaving room on the rack for a fuel bladder when necessary – then you’re on the wrong form of transport. And while I realise that riders in advertisements never drop their bikes, I find it hard to believe they never dent or scratch the panniers.

These days there’s a great range of do-it-all gear. There are three-in-one jackets incorporating a lightweight waterproof outer and a warm removable fabric inner that combined to give you one warm, waterproof jacket. Helmets can adjust to various conditions, just make sure your lid is perfectly comfortable. And make sure your boots are waterproof, cos a few days of wet feet sucks – and hurts! Clothes-wise, all you really need is a pair of lightweight quick-dry shorts, the same in longs, a polo, a jumper and a pair of runners. Anything else is superfluous, though you should note that runners are not considered suitable footwear in the discoteque at Fitzroy Crossing.

Accidents happen, so it’s in your best interests to carry a personal first-aid kit, even if you’re travelling alone – which, incidentally, is not such a good idea. Even when you’re staying on the bitumen there are some long and lonely stretches of highway, and should you come to grief you would much rather have a compos mentis mate seeking assistance on the phone than being forced to wait for assistance. If you do insist on going on your Pat Malone, emergency beacons are very affordable these days, but do your research to make sure its frequency will work where you’re going.

Annual Leave

With a few shortcuts, it’s possible to ride the full length of Highway 1 at legal speeds in a fortnight. However, to really appreciate the experience takes at least six weeks. And you still won’t have passed within 1000km of its spiritual centre – Uluru. Nor ridden the fabulous mountain passes of our country’s extremities in Tasmania. And you also wanted to take a quick look at Kangaroo Island, and that Auto Museum at Birdwood, and the Super Pit at Kalgoorlie…

Don’t leave it until you’re actually rolling to discover you’ve run out of time. Although a GPS and a SpotTracker are life-savers once you’re out there, no electronic device will match an outline plan with the aid of a good map. HEMA maps are excellent, and Aussie company Westprint has good detail maps of legendary outback tracks such as the Birdsville and Strzelecki.

Fly out, fly in

These days there are many transport companies that will move your bike around the country reliably and economically between major centres – especially if there’s a group of you needing transport – and you get to fly, avoiding the unnecessary boring sections. Of course there are those riders who will claim there are no boring bits on a bike, but my guess is that not many of them have spent more than 20 consecutive eight-hour days in the saddle. No matter how scenic the ride, it can become ‘same old same old’.

Lap sectors

I have friends who are currently on their third year of a ’round the world ride. Twice now, when winter has effectively closed the northern hemisphere, they’ve stowed their bike for a few months and flown home to Australia. With relatively inexpensive airfares connecting most population centres, a lap of Oz could take the same form. And make the most of the weather, particularly when we live on a continent where riding above the Tropic of Capricorn between November and March is unbearable and often impossible, and riding across the Great Australian Bight in mid-winter is insufferable. Breaking your lap of Oz into several three-week, 3000km slices makes it easier to digest. For those of you living on the east coast, a sojourn in the Apple Isle in November or March would be an ideal rehearsal. And for a finale there’s always The Red Centre.

Sleeping arrangements

Accommodation  .

While camping retains an aura of rugged romance, there’s actually very little to be said for it, particularly if you have to do it yourself.

In the ‘olden days’ some country accommodation wasn’t much better than camping, and was difficult to book ahead with any reliability. Now booking pub accommodation is really easy; negotiating rates, checking photos of the pub, confirmation and payment can all be done online.

In my opinion, camping really is just nature’s way of promoting pubs.

Caravan parks

One thing the grey nomads have done for us all is improve the quality and services offered by camp grounds and caravan parks – quality that once varied considerably.

Now most caravan parks are oases in the wilderness, with clean facilities, mini-supermarkets and many with dining facilities, bars and swimming pools. What more could a camper ask for? Well, you could ask for a cabin – to sleep two, four, six or eight – and probably get one judging by most of the establishments I’ve visited. All with your own refrigerator.

It just demonstrates that even camping ground proprietors realise that camping is for the birds.

Of course it’s possible to lighten the load and take a back-up vehicle for support. Somewhere to stow all the swags, a huge tent, camp chairs and a table, eating utensils, an entrenching tool, lots of food, a huge water tank, and a brace of 12V batteries to keep the piss cold for days on end. You can set up camp anywhere with almost all the facilities available at the average country pub. But when there’s a pub already there, why bother? Particularly when you don’t have to pack it all up and take it with you the next day.

Home stays

Over the past decade, more and more property owners have been offering accommodation to those who venture off the beaten track. Usually these facilities are self-contained cabins set up for families who take their own food and bedding. That is, there’s generally no catering – and certainly no bar. However, if you’re seeking a different experience, many of these station stays will provide dinner and breakfast by prior arrangement. Pre-pay and your hosts might lay on a supply of icy cold beers and have a campfire waiting for the flick of your match.

Should a station stay not be advertised, it’s worth asking if the homestead can lay on a barbie, a few beers, some sort of bed for the night and top up your tanks the next morning. Just don’t expect them to accept cards.

But wait there is more

Not only are nine of Australia’s 10 ‘must sees’ within cooee of Highway 1, so is my own short-list. Heading clockwise from Gassit HQ in Melbourne, there’s the Head of Bight (near Nullarbor), closely followed by what’s left of Eucla. Then it’s around to The Pinnacles on the western seaboard, and inland to Karijini National Park. In the north-west, Cape Leveque has more going for it than any other remote seascape, then there’s Purnululu (the Bungle Bungles) and Australia’s inland sea, Lake Argyle. On the Gulf, the lost city near Lorella Springs is no longer lost (and there’s a similar rock formation near Cape Crawford on Highway 1). Over on the Pacific coast, Karumba is the only place to fully enjoy a plate of gulf prawns and a schooner of NQ Lager; Cairns is the hub for the ride up to Karumba, the Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Port Douglas, and the Gillies Range Road to Atherton. The Pacific Highway between Brisbane and Sydney has been largely supplanted by expressway, but the ‘old road’ is a rider’s delight. And, while neither are near Highway 1, you’ve not done Australia until you’ve ridden around Mount Panorama and done the same at Phillip Island.

How to Bikepack in Australia: A Complete Guide

Bikepacking in Australia offers a unique blend of adventure, scenery, and wildlife that few places in the world can match. Whether you’re cycling along the rugged outback roads, weaving through tropical rainforests, or pedaling along the stunning coastlines, proper preparation is crucial to make the most of your adventure.

This guide will help you plan, pack, and equip yourself with the right gear to ensure your Australian bikepacking trip is safe, enjoyable, and memorable. We’ll also provide links to more in-depth guides to help you cover all aspects of preparation.

What is Bikepacking?

Bikepacking is essentially backpacking on a bike. It combines cycling with self-sufficient camping, allowing you to cover long distances while carrying all your gear on your bike. It’s a great way to explore Australia’s remote and natural beauty, from the Outback to the coasts.

Planning Your Australian Bikepacking Adventure

Know Your Route

Australia is vast, and depending on where you plan to bikepack, you can expect a variety of terrains, weather conditions, and wildlife. From the dry heat of the Northern Territory to the cool temperate forests of Tasmania, each region has its challenges. Some popular routes include:

  • The Munda Biddi Trail (Western Australia)
  • The Mawson Trail (South Australia)
  • Bicentennial National Trail (Spanning multiple states)

Make sure to research your chosen route in advance, as some areas have limited access to water, food supplies, or shelter.

What to Pack for Bikepacking in Australia

Packing smart is essential for a successful bikepacking trip. While your packing list will depend on the specific trail and weather conditions, certain essentials are universal. Here’s a brief overview of the gear you’ll need:

  • Bikepacking Bags: You’ll need the right bags to efficiently carry your gear on the bike. Check out our complete guide to bikepacking bags to find out which ones work best for different types of trips.
  • Navigation Tools: Carry physical maps and a GPS device. Don't rely solely on your smartphone, as reception can be patchy in remote areas.
  • Tools and Repair Kits: It's important to be self-sufficient in case your bike breaks down. Carry basic tools, a multi-tool, and a tire repair kit. For a full list of necessary tools, check out our Tools needed for bikepacking guide .
  • Clothing: Weather in Australia can be unpredictable, so pack for a wide range of conditions. Layering is key. Learn more about clothes you’ll need for bikepacking and how to dress for varying climates.

Essential Bikepacking Gear for Australia

  • Water Filtration: Water is a must when riding in Australia, especially in remote areas. Not all water sources are safe to drink, so pack a good water filtration system.
  • Camping Gear: Bring lightweight, durable camping gear. A tent or bivy bag that’s easy to set up will save you time after a long day of cycling.
  • Food: Plan meals that are lightweight and easy to prepare. Dehydrated meals, energy bars, and snacks like nuts are ideal.

For a more detailed packing checklist, refer to our How to pack for bikepacking guide.

Bike Maintenance and Spare Parts

Before heading out, make sure your bike is in top condition. Regularly check your tires, brakes, chain, and derailleurs. Carrying spare parts is a must when riding in the Australian wilderness, as bike shops are few and far between in some regions.

Common spare parts you should pack include:

  • Extra tubes and patches
  • Spare chain links
  • Derailleur hanger

Stay Safe: Wildlife and Weather

Australia’s wildlife is one of its biggest draws, but it can also pose challenges. Keep an eye out for snakes, kangaroos, and other native animals, particularly in more remote regions.

Weather in Australia can also be extreme, from scorching sun to unexpected rainstorms. Always check the forecast before setting out, and ensure you’re prepared for the conditions.

Final Thoughts

Bikepacking in Australia is an unforgettable experience. The country’s diverse landscapes, unique wildlife, and endless trails make it a cyclist’s paradise. However, proper planning and preparation are essential to ensure a successful trip. Make sure you have the right gear, understand the terrain, and carry enough supplies.
