Overall rating
The tour was well-organized, and our guide was knowledgeable and personable.
This was our first trip to the Big Island, so of course we wanted to see the summit at Mauna Kea. Our tour guide was Justin- and he was tremendous. He met at pickup location a couple minutes early. He provided a clear ... outline of what the day would include- and he held to it very closely. On the way to our first stop, He provided a great narration of the volcanic and mythological history of the island. After dinner (and acclimating to elevation for a while) we headed further up the mountain- the safety discussion was very calming, but helpful. The view from the summit was SPECTACULAR. About 10-15 minutes before the actual sunset, sneak to the back side of the area up there, and the SHADOW of Mauna Kea on the clouds looks like another mountain. I am fairly well-travelled, and this was a first for me! After that, we went down to the Start gazing station, and got to see some really cool stuff. Justin's knowledge was superb, enough to engage with a couple college students in our group that studied Astronomy at school. Very impressive. Truly, a great way to see a unique and beautiful piece of the Big Island! Many thanks!
Totally worth it!
Awesome experience. Our tour guide Justin was the best!!

Yes, there are a few health risks since you will be at 14,000-foot altitude and at that height there are low oxygen levels and the possibility of altitude sickness. Children under the age of 16 are not permitted to the summit.
What will we see on this tour?
This tour includes the picture perfect Hawaiian sunset, amazing stargazing opportunities, and even a possibility of seeing snow in sunny Hawaii!
How far in advance should I book this activity?
We recommend booking at least 3 weeks in advance. If you have very specific schedule requirements and are not flexible, please book sooner. Last-minute bookings are often possible, but availability is limited.
How cold does it get on Mauna Kea?
Average temperatures can reach 32° Fahrenheit or 0° Celsius.
Does volcanic activity from Kilauea affect visibility?
No. Mauna Kea is so high up that visibility is rarely affected. At the summit of Mauna Kea, you'll even be above most cloud formations.

Hawaii Accommodations and Adventure Tours
A Mauna Kea Tour from Hilo
Our Mauna Kea Summit Tour is designed to showcase the beauty and wonder of one of the most impressive mountains in the world. Mauna Kea (meaning “white mountain”) is historically and culturally very significant to the Hawaiian people, and because of its contributions to geology and astronomy, to the world as well.
This nearly 14,000 foot tall (4200 m) peak is actually a dormant volcano, and has figured in the history of the Hawaiian people as a place of deep meaning: a sacred mountain reserved for access only to the ali’i; the ruling class. Dotted with archaeological sites, including the famous adze quarries, it figures in many Hawaiian histories and stories.
Mauna Kea is at the forefront of modern knowledge as well. To Astronomers, Mauna Kea is home to the world’s largest telescopes and has atmospheric clarity better than anywhere else on earth. Cutting-edge science and new understandings of our Universe are constantly flowing from the summit. To students of Geology and Earth sciences, environmentalists, and anthropologists, Mauna Kea has something for everyone: wonderful Ice Age/Glacial scouring, road cuts revealing strata, and a well defined Volcanic history.

A Mauna Kea tour is a must-do when visiting the Big Island of Hawaii. Check off your bucket list with Arnott’s Lodge & Hiking Adventures and enjoy the journey!
Our goal: Our main objective is to reach the summit of Mauna Kea. We understand that our guests come to visit Mauna Kea for many different reasons. Whether your goal is to try to understand the cultural and spiritual importance, to add the mountain to your list of high points visited, or to study its unique geology and history; we are here to help you reach the top. Weather: Mauna Kea is occasionally hit by passing clouds or bad weather which does not close the road. If the road is open to the summit, our tour WILL proceed. We cannot guarantee that you will see sunset or stars as we have no control of cloud coverage and spontaneous weather. Check out Mauna Kea’s webcam http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/current/cams/ Provided: An adventure of a lifetime. Bring: Extra layer of clothes, long pants, sturdy “closed toe” walking shoes, a light meal, water, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, camera and an adventurous attitude. Arnott’s can provide jackets upon request. Please do not bring: Alcoholic beverages or excessive gear.

Arnott’s has been professionally operating on Mauna Kea since 1990 and has provided transport for both Keck and Subaru VIP’s during construction of these world class observatories.
We were also the only daytime operator taking cruise-ship guests to the summit for many years, which requires a higher degree of training and insurance for this demanding sector.

Mauna Kea Summit
Our tour leaves Hilo at seasonally adjusted times (2pm to 3:30 p.m.). We start our tour from Arnott’s Lodge and make a quick stop at Rainbow Falls, then go directly to the Onizuka Visitor Center (VIS) at 9200ft (3000m) where you can explore the immediate area or watch videos on Astronomy and the Telescopes. The VIS also has a large range of mountain and astronomy related souvenirs and educational materials available.
Following a 30 to 45 minute acclimatization stop at the VIS, we ascend to 13,600ft where our guide will explain the various telescopes in view. Next, we continue up the last few hundred feet to the road highpoint where those in good physical condition may walk around the nearby telescopes. This opportunity and sunset are often at the same time revealing spectacular views of sunset (weather permitting) and the famous “Shadow” of Mauna Kea to the East. Please visit our Mauna Kea Picture Gallery.
Upon twilight, we descend to our own Starshow location where our guide, using a high-powered visible laser, leads you on a detailed journey across the magnificent night sky describing major celestial objects and Polynesian navigational stars (Weather permitting). We have found by experience that this is preferable to deploying an amateur telescope which takes a long time to aim and to process all guests through one object while everyone is getting very cold. Finally, we stop at the Visitor Center for the bathrooms before continuing back.
Mauna Kea Sunrise OR Mauna Kea Day Tours
The growing popularity of Sunrise tours of Mauna Kea acknowledges the amazing adventure that awaits you. Isolated in the vast Pacific Ocean, at the moment of sunrise and for a few minutes after Mauna Kea/Mauna Loa casts a giant shadow of its pyramidical shape into space. Many mistake it for another island near Maui. As you now have daylight ahead of you your guide can describe the cultural importance of Mauna Kea and point out its many features and incredible views. This time slot is usually uncrowded, unlike Sunset, which has up to 16 vans and 224 people on the mountain.
Daytime tours can include a telescope visit, but this is not guaranteed. Telescope visits are only possible when the telescope permits (i.e. either the Keck reopens to the public or if a group has arranged a visit themselves with another telescope entity.) Arnott’s Lodge does not arrange private tours inside the telescopes. Ideal for those who would like to learn more about the mountain and its astronomy credentials, its geology and its cultural history during an un-rushed and uncrowded part of the day. Daytime tours must be below the Visitor Station by 4:30pm.
For either Sunrise or daytime tours text/call 808-339-0921 or email us at [email protected].
Please note that tours and general public are not permitted on summit astronomy area until half an hour before listed sunrise time for that day, so as not to impact astronomy operations.
MAUNA KEA WEATHER -IMPORTANT INFO
Arnott’s Lodge and Hiking Adventures does not guarantee fine weather. Getting you to the Summit area is the main thrust of this tour and full price will be charged if we make it to the top. As with all mountains, local heating and cooling can cause cloud or haze and impact Sunset and the Starshow, as can full moon, high wind or extreme cold. Our Starshow, if conditions permit, is an overview of what is seen that night including major constellations, Polynesian navigational stars, and signs of the Zodiac. We do NOT use telescopes. If we cannot get above the Visitor Station due to road closure, you will receive a 50% refund. This is the ONLY case for a refund. There are cases where overnight snow and ice have the road closed even up to the time we leave Hilo for the mountain, however we monitor the 28 webcams on the mountain for any sign of thaw and possibility to get up to the top as we realize that road crews are also striving to get astronomers up to telescopes and many of our Adventurer guests have just this one shot to go. Sometimes the road only opens briefly and you have to be at the Visitor Information Station to take advantage; this is where 25 years of experience comes in. Please read concerning all Arnott’s Mauna Kea Tours:
- People with respiratory and/or heart conditions, severe obesity, pregnant women, and children under 13 are advised not to go above the 9,200 ft. level where the visitor center is located. Do not go to the summit within 24 hours of scuba diving. (For reasoning on these restrictions, please visit the Visitor Center website and/or the Subaru Telescope website .) We also strongly recommend that you not take this tour if you are hungover, or if you have been drinking alcohol the day of your tour.
- We provide supplemental oxygen, however this is to restore oxygen balance only. This is a remote area with at least 90 minutes for emergency response and we take NO responsibility for the rare person who reacts negatively to altitude. Any use of oxygen is considered an emergency medical situation and immediate evacuation of the entire group from the summit is required.
- If guests are interested, we may offer a tour to see Mauna Loa when Mauna Kea is inaccessible. Mauna Loa is the most massive mountain in the world, and reaches an impressive height of 13,679 ft (4,169 m). There are many things to see on Mauna Loa, including lava tubes and formations, pahoehoe and a’a lava flows, cinder cones, and the outside of the NOAA Mauna Loa Atmospheric Observatory.
- Guests meeting us at the Visitor’s Center will be driving up a steep but well paved road to 9,200 feet. The section just below the Visitor’s Center is the steepest part, you may find that your vehicle climbs better if you manually select low gear. Also on arrival at the parking area do not turn off your engine immediately or it may boil over. Allow it to run for 3 or 4 minutes of warm down.
In some cases of extreme weather, we may offer you the option to opt out with a full refund before we leave for the tour. Mauna Kea Webcams: http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/current/cams

The trip begins mid-afternoon with a pick-up at one of our central locations in Kailua Kona, the Queen’s Marketplace (Waikoloa Resort) and Waikoloa Village (Lava Java). After completing our pick-ups, we begin our journey to our first stop as a group at the Mauna Kea visitor center. As we drive up the mountain, we learn about island culture, geography, geology and natural history.
On the summit, your guide will point out the observatories as they begin to open and rotate into position. You’ll learn about famous observatories such as Keck, Subaru and Gemini. There is plenty of time for photos while the sunset transforms the area into a beautiful and quite unearthly spectacle. When the best of the color has past, we descend to mid-mountain, where the sky is equally clear but the climate and air density is much more comfortable for stargazing.
Almost every night we explore the night sky using our large portable telescopes * . Using high power green lasers our guides are famous for their ability to locate the treasures of the night sky and interpret them in a way that everyone can understand. Midway in the evening we serve hot drinks and a sweet treat to help take the chill off . The tour is 7-8 1/2 hours in duration depending on where you join it. The actual schedule of the trip varies throughout the year according to sunset times.
* The Stargazing component of our adventure depends on natural conditions. Although more than 90% of our trips have fine stargazing conditions; MKSA does not guarantee the weather in any way.

STORY SUMMARY
HONOLULU - The high court ruled in favor of plaintiffs, saying the Mauna Kea Access Road is not a state highway, vacating a prior circuit court decision.
image from video provided by Kanaeokana
(BIVN) – The Hawaiʻi Supreme Court has ruled in favor of plaintiffs and vacated a circuit court decision on the jurisdiction of the Mauna Kea Access Road, a controversy that was central to the Thirty Meter Telescope standoff in the summer of 2019.
The plaintiffs – Native Hawaiian beneficiaries of the Hawaiian home lands trust, Pualani Kanakaʻole Kanahele, Edward Halealoha Ayau, and Keliʻi Ione, Jr – alleged the State of Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiian Homes Commission breached their trust duties by allowing the State to use the Mauna Kea Access Road without payment since the 1970’s, and that the attempt by the State Department of Transportation (DOT) to make the road a state highway in 2018, via internal memo, was illegal.
Opponents of the planned Thirty Meter Telescope occupied the base of the Mauna Kea Access Road (MKAR) in July 2019, blocking construction crews’ access to the mountain summit. Thirty-four individuals were arrested on the third day of the standoff, including plaintiffs Kanahele and Ioane. Opponents of the TMT project disputed the State’s assertion that the portion of the road was a state highway. Plaintiff Ayau explained during a meeting of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs in Hilo in 2019.

On February 13, 2020, Plaintiffs filed suit in circuit court. Two years later, the court sided with the defendants, ruling Act 14 of 1995 “fully and finally resolved” claims which arose between August 21, 1959 and July 1, 1988, involving the “uncompensated use of Hawaiian homelands for state roads claims and highways.” The plaintiffs appealed the decision. On Thursday, in its 47-page opinion written by Justice Sabrina McKenna, the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court held:
- Act 14 of 1995 does not preclude Plaintiffs’ claims;
- the portion of the MKAR going through DHHL lands is not a state highway because legal requirements for such a designation were not satisfied; and
- the State blatantly disregarded unambiguous requirements of the “Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, 1920” (“HHCA”), and in doing so, breached its constitutional and fiduciary obligation to faithfully carry out the HHCA. Haw. Const. art. XII, § 2; Ahuna v. Dep’t of Hawaiian Home Lands , 64 Haw. 327, 338, 640 P.2d 1161, 1168 (1982).
The Hawaiʻi Supreme Court wrote that the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands “failed to prevent the DOT from illegally assuming control and jurisdiction over the MKAR in 2018,” and added:
It is troubling that the DOT unilaterally designated the MKAR as a state highway via an internal memo. Instead of following the procedures for a land exchange or sale as described in HHCA sections 204(a)(3) and 205 and 43 C.F.R. part 47, the State – particularly the HHC members and DHHL – blatantly breached their fiduciary duties by allowing the illegal taking and then failing to remedy the designation that violated the HHCA. Hence, the MKAR was not properly designated a state highway.
The Hawaiʻi Supreme Court vacated the circuit court’s March 16, 2022 final judgment and remanded to the circuit court for further proceedings consistent with its opinion.
The Thirty Meter Telescope project has been stalled ever since the 2019 standoff on the Mauna Kea Access Road, and no further progress towards construction has been made.
