Logical Journey of the Zoombinis Description

The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis is a game released in 1996. Zoombinis are the main creatures in a series of educational software. Near the beginning of each game, the player has the ability to select a party of Zoombinis by choosing characteristics for the Zoombinis like eyes/glasses, hair/hats, nose color, and shoes/means of locomotion. The party of Zoombinis travels through a series of puzzles, which the player must solve to proceed. These puzzles often depend on the characteristics of the Zoombinis, for example matching Zoombinis with the same characteristics and none left over.

Logical Journey of the Zoombinis (also known as Zoombinis Logical Journey in the remake) is an educational puzzle computer game developed and published by Brøderbund Software for the original and The Learning Company for the remake.

The Zoombinis are a race of small blue creatures depicted with varying facial features, initially living in prosperous peace on a small island called Zoombini Isle. However, they are tricked and enslaved by their neighbors, the Bloats. The game depicts the Zoombinis’ search for a new home, featuring a variety of logical puzzles which the player must solve to get the Zoombinis to their new home.

Most of the puzzles involve the physical features of the Zoombinis as part of the solution. For example, in the puzzle ‘Allergic Cliffs’, the player is given a choice of 2 bridges, each of which will allow Zoombinis to pass only if they have certain combinations of features.

When the Zoombinis home, Zoombini Isle, is taken over by creatures called Bloats, they decide to escape to a new home. But they can only 16 at a time, and they must cross many obstacles that require logic to get past. It’s up to you to get past all the puzzles to get all of the Zoombinis to their new home.

I have played this ., at one time or another with 5 grandkids. We took the game all the way to the end each time. So, I basically played with each at 3rd grade level, and beat it 5 times. It is tough and challenges even 12 graders. It teaches arithmetic skills, and many other skills like patience and determination.

DrKnox 2022-08-20 12 points Windows version

The one on Steam is NOT "The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis". It's just "Zoombinis", a very poorly make remake/sequal. Not at all the same thing.

I found an .iso! I'm buying the new version too (as should we all), but I wanted a nostalgia trip first. https:// macintoshgarden .org /games /logical-journey-of-the-zoombinis (remove spaces)

When I played this game as a child, the rating on the box said "Ages 10 and Up". But that was deceiving; Zoombinis was a lot more difficult than the cartoony animation and art style would lead players to believe. I used to think it was impossible. Now that I'm a grown-up, I've come back to this and successfully mastered the game and all its puzzles, though it did take quite a lot of thinking to figure out a strategy. I can guide Zoombinis with ease, but there's still an element of challenge when several of the puzzles rely on trial-and-error to discover its rules.

Can anyone help me figure out a way to run Zoombinis on a Chromebook, using a chrome browser? I'm desperate for my students to play this wonderful game, but all we have at school are Chromebooks. Please help!!!!! Thank you.

I've loved this game since I was five, I got it with my first computer in 1998. It made me love math! I don't know any math games that have been as fun as this one. I thought I'd never find it again, but here it is!

I would be keen to go so far as to say that this is the best children's puzzle game ever made. I still play this game now. It does reach a difficulty point that is tricky, even for adults. Amazing game.

Commenting to say that I was able to run the game perfectly using VMWare in Windows 7 by following the instructions posted by user "ENT" lower down. I copied the instructions down; if anyone can't find the comment or it gets deleted, email me at jtbswartz ((AT)) yahoo ((dot)) com and I will send the instructions to you. Cheers ENT, I'm playing Zoombinis again. HIP HIP ZOOMBINI!

I got this working nicely in DOSbox. It basically went down like this. 1. I mounted the iso directory of zoombinis in DOSbox, it gave me an error saying I needed Windows installed. 2. I then found a Windows 3.1 set of floppy disk images, I extracted them all into a single folder, mounted that folder in DOSbox in its own C directory and then successfully installed Windows3.1 within DOSbox. 3. I then remounted the Zoombinis iso image to the D directory, then I started up Windows3.1 and used the file explorer to run the Zoombinis installer. It installed itself and the quicktime runtimes. 4. After running the shortcut created within windows, another error, this time about a lack of sound drivers, after fixing that it will complain about SVGA drivers. I found this wonderful guide which addresses both of these issues. http://www.howtogeek.com/230359/how-to-install-windows-3.1-in-dosbox-set-up-drivers-and-play-16-bit-games/ After that you can play flawlessly with no weird compatibility issues.

Your link to the Windows XP only leads to links for Windows 10. All Microsoft links now only force you into doing Windows 10 now. Windows 10 SUCKS at any backwards compatibility and spits out CD-Roms unless it's the latest AAA game. Windows 10 wants it so you do online gaming only where you can't do anything offline in your own private sphere. If Microsoft could they would partner with Google and make you always online with no choice.

Easiest way to play this game is in a Windows 98 Virtual Machine. Here's how I did it, works flawlessly; 1. Install VMWare Player (free) 2. load this pre-made win98 Virtual Machine https://winworldpc.com/download/3DD43CC6-18DA-11E4-99E5-7054D21A8599 3. Once running win98, on VMWare toolbar click Player Removable Devices CD/DVD settings 4. under connection in cd/dvd settings, tick 'use ISO image file:' and select zoombinis image, click ok. 5. Go to Player Removable Devices CD/DVD and click connect 6. install zoombinis 7. Right click desktop properties settings tab and set color to 256 colors

I tried so hard for hours to get this game to work. I followed your instructions to a t. when the first method failed i tried the second. everything was working until the part where i had to run the game installation. i cant get the quicktime to install form the zoombinis installer nor does downloading it separately work. no matter what i do it always says i need quicktime 2.1 All i wanted was to play this stupid game and instead i've merely wasted hours of my life i could have used to do something productive with my life. I hope for very unpleasant things to happen to whoever wrote this page and it's horrible time stealing lies!!!

Used Daemontools to mount the iso as drive Z and modified the path in the zoombini cfg file to point towards drive Z:.. Then you just run the Zoombini executable file.. The whole game is 95 meg.

I am in possession of both Mountain Rescue and Logical Journey Discs that we ordered back when i was in primary school (im 2nd year UNI now). It seems that even with the disc the game freezes upon clicking "Yes" on the installed. Im running a 64-bit Alienware 17R5 so specs arnt the problem. I think it may have something to do with the fact that the launcher/installer runs 32-bit. Ive also tried running in compatibility mode for XP, 98 and 95 but nothing works.

qwert 2014-01-15 0 point Windows version

I got to installing it. It's an ISO file so you will need a virtual drive(daemon tools or the likes). There is still one problem. It needs a CD when you start. Even when you have mounted the ISO, it still needs a CD to run. I think the virtual drives i tried did not emulate the protection still on this ISO.

Yathena 2014-01-07 1 point Windows version

I downloaded this one twice (just to make sure the first didn't screw up) and both times I get the message that it contains no executable files. I know this was just put up, so it could be that it just needs an update. I was so excited to play this! Please fix it!

Version Differences [ ]

Logical Journey of the Zoombinis was released by Brøderbund but later on changed hands to the Learning Company. The latter re-released the game as Logical Journey of the Zoombinis Deluxe and finally Zoombinis' Logical Journey, which is important because the last release is capable of running on modern computers where the original and Deluxe are not.

Deluxe introduced such features as Practice Mode, in which the player can pick any level and any difficulty to play without influencing their "campaign" progress, and the help icon, which explains how to solve each level from within it. It also required beating each path 3 times without losing any zoombini in order to raise its difficulty, instead of only needing to do so just once.

Zoombinis' Logical Journey offers no new features, but is able to run on newer computers.

Zoombinis is a remake of this game with updated assets released by FableVision, Learning Games Network, & Terc.

The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis/Walkthrough

  • VisualEditor

The Zoombinis travel in groups of 16 across a series of puzzles. There are 12 puzzles in total, split into four legs, and the Zoombinis must complete three legs (9 puzzles) in order to reach their new home. The first and last legs are compulsory and are completed by all Zoombinis; for the second leg the player is given a choice to take either the north or the south path.

In between each leg, there is a campsite where the Zoombinis can be stored for later retrieval.

If the player successfully brings an entire party of 16 Zoombinis through a leg, the leg will increase in difficulty and a building will be constructed at Zoombiniville to celebrate. The four difficulty levels are Not So Easy, Oh So Hard, Very Hard, and Very Very Hard, and each difficulty level is color-coded. Once a leg has increased in difficulty, there is no way to revert the change. If a group of 16 Zoombinis complete a leg while the difficulty is Very Very Hard, the difficulty does not increase since there is no higher level to progress to. In the same way, completing a leg under the Very Very Hard difficulty level will only reward the player with a new building once, since there is only one building per leg at each difficulty level.

Leg 1: The Big, The Bad and The Hungry [ | ]

This leg starts at Zoombini Isle and finishes at the first campsite, Shelter Rock.

Allergic Cliffs [ | ]

Puzzle type – Logic, Set theory.

There are two bridges hanging over a cliff supported by six wooden pegs. The Zoombinis can only cross one of the bridges, and the bridge they are allowed to cross is determined by their characteristics. If the wrong bridge is selected, the face embedded in the cliff will have an allergic reaction and the Zoombini will be sent tumbling or flying back to the other side. As a result, a peg will spring loose and drop down the cliff. If all six pegs come loose, the bridges will collapse onto the faces and the Zoombinis who did not make it to the other side will be stranded, unable to cross between the cliffs. Assuming the player actually moves the same Zoombini to each of the two bridges (where the first bridge was wrong and the second bridge is the correct one), the player is guaranteed five Zoombinis to the other side.

Stone Cold Caves [ | ]

The Zoombinis arrive at a stone face divided into four caves, which can be accessed by one path each. Each path is guarded by two stone guardians, who will only let Zoombinis pass if they have the right characteristics, similar to Allergic Cliffs. If the wrong cave is selected, a guardian will release a rock slide, sending the Zoombini tumbling down the path to the bottom. The player has many chances to find the right cave for each Zoombini before a rock slide tumbles down from above and seals the cave paths, leaving behind those who have not entered a cave. There is wise and quiet Onyx, sweet and snobbish Ferrous, grouchy and mean Ignorameous, and cute and beautiful Crystal.

Pizza Pass [ | ]

Puzzle type -Trial and error.

The Zoombinis arrive on a dirt road guarded by three tree trolls: Arno, Willa and Shyler. There is a pizza machine to the left which has options for different toppings for a pizza and ice cream. The trolls are hungry, and the player must create a pizza with unique toppings for each of them. If none of the trolls are happy with the toppings on the pizza, it will be thrown into a pit. But if one of the trolls likes all of the toppings present on the pizza, it will be thrown onto the rock behind that troll instead. Once a troll receives a pizza with all of the wanted toppings on it, the troll will move to stand on his or her respective rock and wait for the remaining trolls to be satisfied. If the player is unsuccessful in delivering the correct pizza after 6 tries, the Zoombini delivering the pizza will be whacked back a short distance by the nearest troll that is present. If there are more incorrect delivers, the Zoombini will be whacked back to Zoombini Isle. The more incorrect deliveries, the more Zoombinis will be whacked away. Once all trolls are satisfied, they will finish their pizzas until their tummies are full and the remaining Zoombinis will then be allowed to continue their journey. Arno is grouchy and naive, Willa is beautiful, witty and bossy, and Shyler is very shy, quiet, sweet, and cute.

There are significant changes to the puzzle as the level of difficulty increases:

  • Not So Easy: Only Arno is present, and there are five pizza toppings.
  • Oh, So Hard: Willa is added, giving a total of two trolls. There are now four pizza toppings, and ice cream is added with a total of 2 toppings.
  • Very Hard: Shyler is now added, so all trolls are present. Ice cream toppings remain the same as the preceding level, but all five pizza toppings can now be used.
  • Very, Very Hard: Same as Very Hard, but now with three ice cream toppings.

Shelter Rock [ | ]

Once this leg is complete, the remaining Zoombinis will arrive at Shelter Rock, the first campsite. The player is then given the opportunity to take either the north or the south path through to the next leg if they have 16 Zoombinis present. If the player does not have enough Zoombinis, or if they decide to return to a different campsite, the player can place any remaining Zoombinis into a storage compartment.

Leg 2A: The Marshy Trail / Who's Bayou [ | ]

This leg starts at Shelter Rock and finishes at the second camp site, Shade Tree. If the Zoombinis choose to travel north from Shelter Rock, this is the leg that they will take.

Captain Cajun's Ferryboat [ | ]

Puzzle type- Trial and error, Following a sequence, Pattern finding.

Captain Cajun will take the Zoombinis across a wide river on his ferry boat, but only if they have a characteristic in common with the person they sit next to. As the puzzle difficulty increases, the seats become closer together, so each Zoombini must have something in common with multiple Zoombinis. On the first level, the Zoombinis are placed in a line where fourteen of them must have something in common with two other Zoombinis and the other two just only needs something common with one other Zoombini. On the second level, the Zoombinis are placed on a 2 by 8 grid. On the third level, the Zoombinis are placed on a 4 by 4 grid. The final level is a 4 by 4 grid with the rows shifted slightly, honeycomb-style. Here, some spaces require one Zoombini to share something in common with six other Zoombinis, as opposed to four.

Titanic Tattooed Toads [ | ]

Puzzle Type - Following a sequence, pattern finding, problem solving.

The player must find a path on different shaped, patterned and colored lily pads for huge toads to ferry them across the river on their backs. Each toad has a shape on its back which corresponds to a particular feature (hence 'tattooed toads'). The same toad cannot be used more than twice nor will there be any toads that hop diagonally. If the player chooses a path which doesn’t have a continuing sequence of the shape, color or pattern on the toad's back, the toad will get stuck and the Zoombini will be left in limbo on the lily pads and cannot continue. When the puzzle difficulty increases, there are few or no paths to be found, but half-formed ones. A fairy is shown at the beginning of the puzzle changing the lily pads with a wand. The wand (called the "Swapping Stick") is left with the toads and the player must swap the lily pads with the wand to make a path. Eventually, the wand's power will run out. In the third and fourth levels, crabs emerge from the river at the top of the lily pad field. The crabs have the shape of a particular lily pad on their back and, like the toads, will work their way down the field to obstruct the toads pathway, possibly taking them in a different direction.

Stone Rise [ | ]

Similar to Captain Cajun's Ferryboat, the Zoombinis must be arranged on stones so that each Zoombini has one particular feature in common with their neighbor on the next stone. The feature to be matched is identified by a small etching on the stone between them. Doing so will create a power surge between the stones. When all the Zoombinis share a connection between their neighbors and all are connected to the power source (indicated by the stones turning red or blue), the stones rise up out of the riverbed and the Zoombinis can continue. In 'Very Very Hard' Mode (Red, Level 4) of this activity, in the centre of the field usually will be a line of four stones,(starting with the main stone on the very right and the other three directly left of it horizontally. Linking Zoombinis on these four stones, and these four stones only a banner stating that the player has entered the 'Psychedelic ZB Zone' where the Zoombinis will start to flash, for visual effect only.

Leg 2B: Deep, Dark Forest [ | ]

This leg starts at Shelter Rock and finishes at the second camp site, Shade Tree. If the Zoombinis choose to travel south from Shelter Rock, this is the leg that they will take.

Fleens! [ | ]

The Zoombinis meet their supposed cousins, the Fleens, in a clearing. There are three Fleens on a tree branch, which must be lured off by a Zoombini who has characteristics that correspond to the Fleen's characteristics. The object of this puzzle is to work out which Zoombini characteristics correspond to the Fleen characteristics. When a Fleen is lured off the branch by a Zoombini, they chase the Zoombini until the Zoombini escapes onto a separate tree branch. The player has six attempts to match the Zoombini with the Fleen before the Zoombinis run out of room on the tree branch and fall off, only to be chased away by their Fleen counterpart. If all three Fleens on the tree branch are lured off, the beehive on the branch gets disrupted and the remaining Fleens are chased away by the bees, forming a shape of either a pair of scissors, an arrow, or a storm cloud.

Assuming the 16th and last Zoombini lures the last Fleen off the branch, the player is guaranteed to have six Zoombinis progressing to the next challenge.

Didimension Hotel / Hotel Dimensia [ | ]

Ulla Instantaneous is a musical squirrel who owns Didimension Hotel, Zoombini sized compartments hollowed out of a row of trees. She is preparing to close the hotel for the night so that she can begin the nightly rehearsals of her jazz band or go home. The player must place the Zoombinis in the compartments by characteristics (row by row, column by column, etc.), but if they are placed in the wrong compartment, the ledge holding the Zoombini will retract and the Zoombini will fall. Every time this happens, the clock on left side of the screen will cause 5 minutes to pass and the setting will get darker. The more mistakes made, the quicker the time passes and the darker it will become. If the clock reaches midnight, all the ledges will retract, announcing the hotel officially closed and the Zoombinis who don't have a room must return to the previous base camp.

Mudball Wall [ | ]

A large stone wall inconveniently blocks the path of the Zoombinis. A nearby machine creates mud balls that can be colored and stamped with a shape. If the mud balls hit a certain target on the wall, either one, two or three Zoombinis get catapulted over the wall to safety. Eventually, the mud in the machine will run out, stranding those who did not make it over the wall. As the difficulty increases, additial squares will be added that require the player to pick the correct shape, mud colour and the colour inside the shape.

Shade Tree [ | ]

Once Zoombinis complete either of these two legs, they will arrive at Shade Tree, the second campsite. Shade Tree works in exactly the same way as Shelter Rock.

The only difference with Shade Tree (in terms of gameplay) is that there is now only one path that the Zoombinis can take - the path leading to the Mountains of Despair, which is the final leg.

Leg 3: The Mountains of Despair [ | ]

This is the final leg of the journey.

The Lion's Lair [ | ]

The Zoombinis encounter a dimly lit cavern where a large, stone lion guards the only way onward. Below the lion is a path consisting of 16 stones. The Zoombinis must be placed on the path, in order, according to certain characteristics, which are shown on the wall. If a Zoombini is placed on the wrong stone, that Zoombini is transported to the correct stone and a peg holding up a large gate pops free. When all the pegs are gone, the gate falls and the Zoombinis behind it return to Shade Tree. The Zoombinis which are placed correctly on the path are allowed by the lion to continue their journey. As the difficulty increases, characteristics disappear from the wall until no characteristics are shown.

Mirror Machine [ | ]

Puzzle type – Identifying, forward planning.

The player is presented with a set of glass slides, each bearing the image of a Zoombini. The player then has to pick a Zoombini from the party to match a slide featuring its doppelganger. The images from the Zoombini and from the slide are then projected onto each side of a large, crystal pendulum in the center of the stage. Think of it as balancing an equation. If this is done correctly, the pendulum is lifted and the Zoombini, riding a mine cart, will jump across a shaft and can move on. If it is done incorrectly, the pendulum is lowered and the Zoombini will crash into it and fall down the shaft. As the puzzle difficulty gets harder, the original reflections have to be modified by adding extra glass slides in front of them. Later on, the player will be forced to use a particular Zoombini (based on the order in which they left the last challenge), and later still, the player will be forced to use the same set of intervening slides to make the images of two Zoombinis in succession match the images of two slides.

Bubblewonder Abyss [ | ]

The Zoombinis have to navigate a maze while encased inside a bubble. They have to be sent through the maze through one of the starting points, and the player has no control over the bubble once it is in motion. Panels at junctions in the maze will change the direction of some Zoombinis, according to certain characteristics. A wrong move can result in Zoombinis getting sucked into a whirlpool and lost when their protective bubble pops. If they are placed correctly, they are able to pass to the other side of the abyss. All Zoombinis that were lost will return to the Shade Tree base camp.

As the puzzle difficulty gets harder, the Zoombinis can only navigate the maze from one starting point. The player must notice arrows that alternate the directions in which they send Zoombinis, as well as panels that switch direction when a bubble passes over a corresponding trigger. Still other panels lock bubbles in place until another bubble passes over a release trigger, allowing the trapped bubble to continue in its previous direction. So as to not lose Zoombinis, players must send Zoombinis into the maze with the correct sequence and timing. The player should also be aware that if two bubbles collide with each other, both bubbles will pop and those Zoombinis will be lost. (The exception is if one bubble bumps another one out of a lock panel.)

Those who survive this leg will reach their goal: Zoombiniton. The more Zoombinis complete the journey, the more buildings, houses, etc. get built and the bigger the town will grow.

Zoombiniton / Zoombiniville [ | ]

Zoombiniton is the new home of the Zoombinis. The first time the player gets an entire group of 16 Zoombinis through a certain leg at a certain level, a special building gets constructed.

The buildings that can be earned are (in order): a band shell, a windmill, a general store, a swimming pool, a clock tower, a bowling alley, a fire station, an opera house, a paper clip museum, a courthouse, a monument, a school, a city hall, a library, an observatory and a playground.

The exciting games and activities that the user can participate in make the product very appealing to a majority of audiences. The Bad The game is outdated and does not possess the features commonly employed in computer software today. Other than that, the product itself has very limited negativity. Have You Played… Logical Journey Of The Zoombinis?

m o r e t o p p i n g s

There are, these days, far too many games to play. Well, there were always too many games to play. But only since the advent of digital distribution, have their numbers so wildly and obviously exceeded my capacity to get through them all. If I’ve heard of a game, the odds are I can have it on my PC in as little as a couple of minutes. It’s a wonder beyond anything I could have dreamed of as a kid, but it’s also a wonder I might not have wished for. A wilderness of sweets, as Milton oh-so-subversively described Eden.

When my family first had a PC, I was 11. It wasn’t a great PC, and games were expensive, so I didn’t get new ones that often. It was, somehow, actually possible to run out of games. So I played everything I could get my hands on. Demo discs from magazines. Chip’s Challenge. Fucken Encarta . But the real bonanza, however, came during the school summer holidays, when mum (who was a teacher) would bring home a grab-bag assortment of janky educational titles for me to beast my way through over the break. Enter, then Logical Journey Of The Zoombinis .

Zoombinis was way better than it had a right to be. You had a thousand-odd little blue fellows with different combinations of facial features, and you had to shepherd them, a few dozen at a time, across a landscape comprising ten or so screens, each of which was some sort of logic-based minigame. You’d lose some on the way, but once you’d dropped off the survivors, you’d start afresh with a new load, and the puzzles would be a bit harder, in a sort of game+ mode. I think you needed to get around half the zoombinis to their new home to win, so when the puzzles got really tough and your attrition rate soared, it was actually pretty tense.

Anyway, the best puzzle was the encounter where you had to use a big machine (with disconcerting fleshy lips) to make pizzas, in order to satisfy three tree stumps who were complete dickheads. I can’t remember what the rules were, but each of the wood-faced bastards would stipulate or forbid their own set of toppings, and you’d have to work out what pizza would please them all. It was way harder than it sounded, and I’ll still remember the petulant roar of “more toppings!” that the lead bellend would emit whenever he was displeased, because I heard it so many times.

Maybe Zoombinis was actually rubbish. Or maybe it was only good in the way that even the worst meal tastes amazing when you’ve not eaten in days. (It actually got updated and re-released a few years ago, and I haven't gone back to check.) Either way, if Steam had been a thing back then, I never would have tasted it. It makes me realise how much I must be missing now.

Logical Journey of the Zoombinis

Logical Journey of the Zoombinis (Video Game)

The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis is the first and most well-known in a series of Edutainment Games . The story focuses on the Zoombinis, an idyllic race of cute blue Waddling Heads , each with different appearances and personalities, who live in peace on Zoombini Isle. One day, a race called the Bloats came in and offered to improve their trade routes and infrastructure. But the Zoombinis soon found themselves exploited as underpaid laborers for the Bloats, and so they set out to find a new homeland across the sea.

At the start of each trip, the player can customize (or randomly generate) a group of 16 Zoombinis. The puzzles often involve the Zoombinis' features - hair, eyes, noses, and feet - and often require trial and error in order to figure out the rules. The puzzles themselves range from braving difficult terrain (crossing bridges over allergic cliffs or traveling over a chasm in a bubble), to getting past the locals (such as the Pizza Trolls or the Fleens), to simply getting them all in the right place (in their seats on a barge, or in rooms in a hotel).

At the very end, the Zoombinis that were successfully led through the dangers find themselves in Zoombiniville, where they build more and greater monuments as the population grows.

Had two much less famous sequels , Zoombinis: Mountain Rescue and Zoombinis: Island Odyssey .

  • In Island Odyssey , the Zoombinis discover the Bloats have since abandoned Zoombini Isle, leaving it an ecological wasteland. The Zoombinis send a team to survey the damage, who discover that the local Zerble population is on the verge of extinction. The Zoombinis set out to help the Zerbles and restore the ecology of Zoombini Isle.

MORE TROPES!:

  • A new monument is built in Zoombiniville the first time the player completes a path on a new difficulty setting without losing any Zoombinis. As noted below, some paths are harder than others.
  • There's also the task of bringing every Zoombini to Zoombiniville. Should you succeed, the narrator will loop through the generic "success" messages whenever you're in the Zoombiniville area .
  • All of the Zoombiniville monuments have this in spades. Even the verb describing how the monument was built is often alliterative with the building's name.
  • All Trolls Are Different : Arno, Willa and Shyler are referred to as "Pizza Trolls," but they resemble walking trees without leaves . They also love pizza and sundaes, but are extremely fussy about their toppings.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population : The Zoombinis are blue and the Fleens are green, though neither of them are particularly humanoid.
  • Anti Poop-Socking : One of the narrator's lines in Zoombiniville reassures the player that they've done enough for now and they should go get some fresh air.
  • Armless Biped : Some Zoombinis. The rest don't even have legs, bouncing around on springs or floating around on propellers.
  • In the Kickstarter campaign for the remake, the lowest-tier rewards were "Just the toppings", "Come on, more stuff!", and "The perfect (digital) pizza", all of which are based on lines from Arno the Pizza Troll.
  • The trailer for the campaign itself also included several. It started off with Arno shouting "MORE TOPPINGS!!" The trailer then goes on to say, "More fun! More ways to play! More graphics and sound! More adventure! MORE ARNO!!"
  • Beef Gate : The second half of the game ramps up the difficulty of the puzzles; the Fleens minigame specifically seems to exist to punish players who "cheated" some of the earlier games by creating twins, as you have to find the three Fleens that will trigger the swarm .
  • Beware the Nice Ones : Shyler the pizza troll; his Shrinking Violet persona doesn't stop him from getting violent with the Zoombinis if they don't get his pizza right.
  • Black Bead Eyes : One of the eyes options for Zoombinis in the remake.
  • Blatant Lies : Captain Cajun opens up his level with "Well, sit wherever you want to, I don't really care." He cares. Although it's true for the very first Zoombini that sits down.
  • Bleak Level : The last three puzzles are all in a cave and have gloomier music and creepier ambient sounds compared to the rest of the game. It's also the only leg of the journey where you don't meet anyone new.
  • Cast of Snowflakes : In the original, half the Zoombinis are different in appearance (the other half are the first half's twins). In the remake, it is possible to have more than twins, just not on the same crew anymore .
  • Circling Birdies : Zoombinis that have recently taken a tumble will have stars circling their heads for a moment.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive : The Bloats come off as malignant business owners, which fits in with the game's description of Zoombinis and their business-like manner. Two major examples being the exploitation of Zoombinis as menial laborers and turning their island into a wasteland in Island Odyssey
  • Cyclops : Some of the Zoombinis only have one eye.
  • Digitized Sprites : The first game uses pixel art (and the remake uses vectors), but the two TLC games have pre-rendered CGI images.
  • Does Not Like Spam : The Pizza Trolls have certain toppings that they hate. Another thing to note is that each topping is favored by only one troll at most; the others hate that topping .
  • Dynamic Difficulty : If you get through a route without losing Zoombinis three times, all of that route's puzzles become harder.
  • Every Pizza Is Pepperoni : Averted. Pepperoni is one of the toppings you can put on Arno the Pizza Troll's pizzas, but it isn't treated as the "default". Nor is it more likely than any other option to be the topping Arno wants.
  • Apparently, the Fleens used to be an offshoot of the Zoombinis until they were mutated... by bad hair products.
  • Evil Laugh : One of the several snippets of narration that can play at the Shade Tree rest stop includes the narrator bursting into one after boasting that the most dangerous trials are yet to come.
  • Excuse Plot : The Zoombinis need to make it to their safe haven, and only you can help! Are you a bad enough dude to help the Zoombinis?
  • Fat Bastard : Shyler the Pizza Troll is the nice one with a pudgy tummy despite him being very shy due to where his name originated.
  • Floating in a Bubble : This allows your Zoombinis to cross the Bubblewonder Abyss. Of course, there are many obstacles in the way...
  • Giant Enemy Crab : Harder difficulties of the Titanic Tattooed Toads level have these coming out of the water to block the way.
  • Glass Smack and Slide : If you get mismatched images on the central crystal of the Mirror Machine, the crystal will lower into the path of the unfortunate Zoombini, who will smack face-first into the crystal and tumble into the abyss.
  • Good Hair, Evil Hair : The Zoombinis have kids' hairstyles. The Fleens have punk/gangster hairstyles or headwear, and they're evil.
  • Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress : Gravitational cognizance variety at Hotel Dimensia. When a platform yanks itself out from underneath a Zoombini, the Zoombini won't fall until after he/she has looked down .
  • Mudball Wall has a grid with the color and shape of the ball determining which cell gets hit; "Very Hard" and "Very Very Hard" add a second color inside the shape. On "Oh So Hard" and "Very Very Hard", one variable doesn't correspond directly to its position in the grid, but a pattern still applies to it (e.g., the top row's shape order might be square-star-triangle-circle-diamond but the next row is star-triangle-circle-diamond-square).
  • Hotel Dimensia requires Zoombinis to be sorted by one of their features per dimension of the room grid. The size of the hotel corresponds with the difficulty: on "Not So Easy" there's only one dimension (sort by one of the four Zoombini features), on "Oh So Hard" and "Very Hard" the hotel expands to two dimensions (one feature for the row, another for the column; "Very Hard" has some rooms blocked off because of Fleens wrecking them), and "Very Very Hard" has three dimensions (the third one achieved by subdividing each of the rooms into a suite with five rooms apiece).
  • Growling Gut : It happens mostly to Shyler the Pizza Troll and Crystal the Stone Guard when both of them are hungry.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal : Though not very obvious due to her apron , Ulla Instantaneous, the innkeeper of Hotel Dimensia/Didimension Hotel, doesn't wear pants.
  • Heel–Face Turn : After being an obstacle the Zoombinis had to overcome in the first game, Arno ends up assisting the Zoombinis in Island Odyssey by loaning his garden for them to plant seedlings necessary for the Zerbles' survival.
  • Hidden Elf Village : It may be argued the first game is the origin story of a Hidden Elf Village. Zoombiniville is an idyllic, deliberately secluded town that a completely virtuous species settled in order to escape persecution.
  • Idiosyncratic Difficulty Levels : From "Not So Easy" to "Very, Very Hard".
  • Idle Animation
  • Inherently Funny Words : "Snozzleberry" in Island Odyssey .
  • Jet Pack : Some of the Fleens have them in place of feet.
  • Large Ham : The narrator, and Arno the Pizza Troll.
  • Living Crashpad : Defied - if a Zoombini is loitering where another Zoombini is about to fall, the first Zoombini will scramble out of the way.
  • The Fleens puzzle can easily become this if you use twins .
  • You may well be leaving some Zoombinis behind at Hotel Dimensia/Didimension Hotel if you place your first Zoombini in the wrong room on Very Hard, due to some rooms being unavailable.
  • The Lion's Lair puzzle is this on Very, Very Hard, since you're only allowed a few mistakes and you don't get any hints.
  • The Migration : The Zoombinis flee Bloat-controlled Zoombini Isle and seek a new place to settle.
  • Nightmare Fetishist : Implied during the Mirror Machine puzzle. Some Zoombinis scream in terror as they hurtle over the gap in the tracks , others whoop in delight. note  Assuming you matched the images correctly, that is...
  • The Titanic Tattooed Toads can be easier on Oh, So Hard than on Not So Easy. Thanks to the new lilypad-swapping wand, you have more options for solving the puzzle and can recover if you accidentally put a toad on the wrong path.
  • Fleens! can be harder on Oh, So Hard than on Very Hard because only four Zoombinis can fit on the tree branch at once instead of the usual six. Since it takes three Zoombinis to lure the necessary Fleens down, you can only afford one wrong guess before you start losing Zoombinis.
  • Hotel Dimensia can be harder on Very Hard difficulty than on Very, Very Hard due to the boarded-up rooms. On Very Hard, you can leave some Zoombinis with no place to go if you place the first ones wrong, and it's not easy to tell before you screw up irreversibly. Very, Very Hard adds more rooms, but none are boarded up, so perfect completion is always possible.
  • NPC Boom Village : Zoombiniville. Successfully navigating your Zoombinis rewards you with new citizens for this up-and-coming settlement. As the town gets bigger, you get more monuments to your achievements.
  • Obsessively Organized : Captain Cajun will not let you sit on his boat if you don't share a similar attribute with the people next to you.
  • Orphaned Series : Before the Kickstarter revived it, the Chain of Deals that publisher Broderbund went through was not easy on the Zoombinis at all.
  • If you get all the Zoombinis to safety, at least one of the normally stuffy Stone Guards will be impressed and congratulate you.
  • Arno has a chance of giving a sincerely heartfelt thank you when you make him his pizza.
  • Pineapple Ruins Pizza : Zig-zagged. The revival adds pineapple as one of the toppings to put on Arno's pizza, and he's likely to want it as much as to exclude it.
  • How Zoombinis land after being catapulted over Mudball Wall.
  • The most common result of the actions taken in Video Game Cruelty Potential .
  • The Quincy Punk : The Fleens are, for the most part, a bunch of little green Waddling Head Quincy Punks.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter : The Zoombinis.
  • Rock Monster : The Stone Guardians and the Allergic Cliffs.
  • Rollercoaster Mine : The Mirror Machine puzzle features carts that Zoombinis have to ride. There's a gap in the tracks that each Zoombini has to fling themselves over - whether or not the central crystal has matching images determines whether the Zoombini makes it across with the cart or gets knocked off into the abyss .
  • Scary Stinging Swarm : An unusually benevolent example. Apparently, bees have no problem with Zoombinis, but they do have a problem with Fleens . Then again, the Fleens were the ones who disturbed them first.
  • Slave Race : The Zoombinis almost become this when they are tricked by the Bloats at the beginning of the game. The game depicts the Zoombinis' search for a new home.
  • Solve the Soup Cans : The game is practically built on soup cans. Some of them make more sense in the context of the story than others, but they're all fairly outlandish. Slips into Alphabet Soup Cans at some points.
  • Speaking Simlish : The NPCs speak English, but the Zoombinis and the Fleens communicate in nonsensical chatter.
  • There Are No Tents : Hotel Dimensia is a hotel in the wilderness run by a kind squirrel named Ulla Instantaneous. It's a safe place for the Zoombinis to stay in for the night, but getting into the hotel is a puzzle in itself.
  • This Is Gonna Suck : Some Zoombinis do not sound happy about the prospect of being catapulted over Mudball Wall.
  • Tone Shift : The first leg of the journey is bright and silly. However, once the player passes Shade Tree, things get substantially darker (in terms of lighting and content) and more serious. The lack of new characters to interact with makes things feel even more lonely and strongly indicates that the Zoombinis are truly in dangerous territory.
  • Took a Level in Kindness : Arno the pizza troll goes from being a selfish and wrathful obstacle in the first game, to a grumpy but loyal ally in Island Odyssey who is helping the Zoombinis restore their island.
  • At least, so long as you didn't make all or most of your Zoombini party out of sets of twins , which takes it past Trial-and-Error Gameplay and into Luck-Based Mission territory. For that matter, even if you just have a few duplicate Zoombinis, if one ends up on the branch then it's impossible to tell which twin you need to send out before trying it .
  • Two Girls to a Team : There are three male Zoombini hairstyles and two female ones, though their actual genders are ambiguous.
  • Unexplained Recovery : While the Zoombinis surviving failing most challenges to try again later are Hand Waved in the manual by saying they're resourceful, Bubblewonder Abyss shows Zoombinis being sucked into a vortex and vaporized if you fail. And yet, they're right back at Shade Tree afterwards. There's also the Easter Egg if you throw a Zoombini into the chasm in the Lion's Lair ; they get chucked back from the pit onto the platform.
  • Unwinnable : Depending on the exact makeup of the group, it might be mathematically impossible to get all sixteen Zoombinis onto Captain Cajun's Ferry if your party has too many Zoombinis with unique traits. Thankfully, the Ferry is the first puzzle on the Who's Bayou route from Shelter Rock and you can customize your party's makeup before setting off for the Ferry, so restarting won't take too much time. This situation is more likely at the higher difficulties due to having more neighbors for each seat to match traits with, though it's still possible even at the Not So Easy lowest level; getting that situation purely by random generated Zoombinis is so remote though you'd have to be doing it on purpose to get into it .
  • Updated Re-release : TERC came up with one on Kickstarter.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential : Of course there's the obvious way (intentionally getting things wrong), but in examples that you won't be punished for, you can electrocute a Zoombini in Stone Rise by dragging them onto an unavailable space, and in the Lion's Lair, you can throw them into the chasm instead of placing them on the path. They wind up back where they started , but still. note  In fact, the latter is the safest and most reliable way to determine what voice a given Zoombini has .
  • Video-Game Lives : In certain areas, the number of "chances" you have are represented by things like pegs keeping a door or bridge from collapsing, the number of Zoombinis on a tree branch, or a clock that ticks down to midnight.
  • Waddling Head : The Zoombinis have no arms, and move stuff around by carrying it on their heads or pushing it. One of the Stone Guardians calls them "little pebbles." The ones that have feet do, however, have legs connecting their feet to their bodies.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss : Arno the pizza troll. Whereas previous levels allowed the player to progress if they so much as got one Zoombini through, Pizza Pass requires the player to solve the puzzle in order to proceed. As such, younger players whom brute forced their way through The Allergic Cliffs and The Stone Cold Caves are likely to lose every remaining Zoombini to Arno . This serves as a wake-up call for players to start paying attention in order to get anywhere in the game.

Logical Journey of the Zoombinis

An educational game by the learning company, in which players solve increasingly challenging logic puzzles to help the zoombinis escape to a brand new home., summary short summary describing this game..

No recent wiki edits to this page.

The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis is an educational game for the PC and the Mac that has players guiding Zoombinis from an island ruled by evil overlords. They make their escape across an ocean to a new mainland, where they must find a place for a new homeland. There are 12 puzzles on the journey to Zoombiniville, that increase in difficulty as they are beaten. You can take 16 Zoombinis with you at a time, and puzzles use them as fodder. For example, in the puzzle where you make a crazy troll (or trolls) a pizza that they like, if you fail to create a pizza they like after a certain amount of time, they give one of the Zoombinis a nice big punch, sending him back to the island. The first time you get 16 Zoombinis through a section of the game, a building is erected in your honor in the new city of Zoombiniville. Once a total of 625 Zoombinis have been taken to safety (2 of all possible combinations of Zoombini characteristics), the game is won.

Allergic Cliffs

No Caption Provided

The first puzzle has two bridges separating two cliffs. Each bridge has a face carved into stone underneath them. You must select one of the two bridges for your chosen Zoombini to cross, if you choose the wrong bridge the face will have an allergic reaction knocking a Zoombini back and knocking one of the six pegs out that are holding the bridges up, if all six of the pegs come loose then the bridges collapse and the Zoombinis that are left on the wrong side do no make it through the puzzle.

Stone Cold Caves

In this puzzle there are 4 cave entrances which have paths leading up to them, each path is defended by two stone guardians which will only let a Zoombini pass if they have the right facial characteristics. If the wrong path is chosen the Zoombini is knocked back down the path, if too many Zoombinis fail then a rock slide occurs due to the guardians blocking the cave entrances from the remaining Zoombinis.

Three guardians (depending on difficulty) are blocking the pass, Arno, Willa and Shyler, and next to them is a pizza making machine which has multiple different topping options. The Zoombini must make a unique pizza for each troll that they are happy with, if they are unhappy with the pizza they thrown it in the pit and knock the Zoombini back, eventually the Zoombini will get knocked all the way back to the island and out of the game. Once all three trolls are satisfied the rest of the Zoombinis can pass.

Captain Cajun's Ferryboat

Captain Cajun will take the Zoombinis on his ferry across the river, but only if they can all sit in an appropriate place on the boat. The boat has enough seats for all the Zoombinis but they can only sit next to another Zoombini which they share at least one characteristic which. If they don't then the captain will eject them of the ship.

Titanic Tattooed Toads

This part of the river is inhabited by tattooed toads and lilly pads with those same tattoos. The Zoombinis much choose a toad to ride across the lilly pads, but the toad can only travel over lilly pads with the same shape, color or pattern as itself. The same toad cannot be used twice in a row, and if the toad takes the wrong path they will be stuck in the middle of the river with no escape.

This puzzle is similar to Captain Cajun's Ferryboat. Zoombinis must sit on a stone bench in pairs where they share a characteristic, but this time the characteristic is etched into the stone behind them. Once all Zoombinis have a pair to sit with the stones will activate and lift them up out of the riverbed so they can continue their journey.

The Zoombinis come face to face with their "cousins" the Fleens. The Fleens are occupying a branch on a tree and must be lured away by one of your Zoombinis with a similar characteristic, if the right Zoombini is chosen then the the Fleen will chase it until it escapes onto a different branch. This branch can only hold six Zoombinis on it a time, when a seventh one is added the first one will fall off and be chased away by a Fleen. If the original three Fleens get taken off the tree branch then a bee hive will fall down scaring away the remaining Fleens.

Didimension Hotel / Hotel Dimensia

This puzzle see a tree hotel run by a musical squirrel who is starting to close up the hotel for the night. The Zoombinis must find a seat to fill in the hotel regarding to one of its characteristics, if a Zoombini sits in the wrong sit it will fall out and 5 more minutes will pass on a clock. Once enough mistakes are made it will eventually be midnight and the Zoombinis who didn't make it into the hotel will be left out for the night and for the game.

Mudball Wall

A large stone wall is unfortunately in the way of the Zoombinis, there is a catapult and a machine that created colored and shaped mudballs. The Zoombinis must fire certain mudballs at locations on the wall, if they get it correct, one, two or three Zoombinis will get catapulted over the wall. Once all the mud in the machine runs out the rest of the Zoombinis who didn't make it will be stranded.

The Lions Lair

In this dark cave there is a stone Lion guarding the path. Underneath the lion is a pathway with 16 stones, the Zoombinis must fill these stones depending on their characteristics. If a Zoombini fills the wrong place they will be teleported to the correct place but one of the stone pegs holding up the exit gate pops out making it closer to closing. Once all the pegs are lost the remaining Zoombinis can not continue.

Mirror Machine

This puzzle contains a set of glass panes, each has an image of a Zoombini. A matching Zoombini has to be paired with the glass pane. If it's correct then the Zoombini and the glass pane will be projected onto a large pendulum. If the pendulum is even then the Zoombini on it can pass, if they get it wrong the pendulum will tilt down dropping the Zoombini.

Bubblewonder Abyss

The final puzzles uses a bubble machine to transport individual Zoombinis from one side of a maze to the other. Once the Zoombini has chosen a route through the maze the player has no control over them, they will either make it to the other side or their bubble could get popped by various traps which will drop them into the Abyss.

All the Zoombinis who survive the Bubblewonder Abyss will make it their goal of Zoombiniville. Once more Zoombinis make it to Zoombiniville it will get more populate, and if 16 Zoombinis make it through one of the puzzles a special building will be constructed in Zoombiniville, those buildings are:

  • General store
  • Swimming pool
  • Clock tower
  • Bowling alley
  • Fire station
  • Opera house
  • Paper clip museum
  • Court house
  • Observatory

Branching path

During the game the player is presented with a choice of two branching paths. After the Pizza Pass puzzle the Zoombinis will make it to Shelter Rock, the first campsite. If the player has 16 Zoombinis they can take one of the two paths, if they don't have enough Zoombinis they can store them at the campsite and get more later. One of the paths leads through the following three puzzles; Captain Cajun's Ferryboat, Titanic Tattooed Toads and Stone Rise, the other path leads through the following puzzles; Fleens!, Didimension Hotel / Hotel Dimensia and Mudball Wall. These two separate paths will eventually lead to the second campsite, Shade Tree. At this final campsite there is only one path which leads to the final 3 puzzles.

Teacher Recommended!!!

On a hunch, I did a search in the App Store for the Zoombinis and was stunned to see that it was there in its original form. I just couldn’t wait to play! This is my favorite piece of software ever! As a teacher, I use to play with my third graders and I played it at home as did my friends. The kids utterly loved the adorable blue creatures on their escapades to reach the home of the Zoombinis. They literally begged to play and I acquiesced. The logic skills they picked up! If I had to pick one piece of software for primary school students, I’d select the Zoombinis. In the beginning, each Zoombini receives cute little attributes for their hair, eyes, noses, and feet which they are most often grouped by in the endearing puzzles. I’m at the beginning level right now and I’m running into problems with the Tatooted Toads. I’m just going to have to keep it at it. Also something as minor as how do I move the lever to get the cart to go in at junction in Mirror Machine? As a teacher and as a former kid, I give the Zoombinis the highest recommendation possible. It is true to the 1980‘s form of the game with authentic music, graphics and gameplay. I want to see MORE of the Zoombini games, please!! As it is, I will recommend it to every kid, parent and grandparent I come across. I think I’ll do that right now!

I got an iPad to play this game

Zoombinis was our family’s favorite game to play when I was a kid! My sister and I would argue over who got play on the computer first. When I heard they recreated the game into an app I was ECSTATIC! I looked up the app and saw the pictures. Everything is almost identical to the PC version. I begged my husband for an iPad for Christmas just to play this game and it has not disappointed. The nostalgia is overwhelming lol. It took me back to 8 year old me. I immediately started quoting the pizza trolls and the narrator; I was even shocked I remembered it all. I love that they used the same voices for the characters. I really REALLY hope that they recreate more of the Zoombini games!! This game is worth buying an iPad to play! The only thing I did not like is the much much lower number of Zoombinis to get to Zoombiniville. The app has 400 while I remember the computer game having over 1000.

Challenging for adults too

There is no way a 10 year old can solve the very very hard level puzzles. I am 32 years old with a physics degree and it takes every ounce of thinking power in my noggin to get all 16 homies to Zoombiniville. 10 year old me would not have the patience and discipline to solve these puzzles. He would have gave up and started playing Pokémon Blue on his game boy once he reached the very hard level (which is exactly what I did back then). I’m glad that 22 years later, I’m finally able to beat this game. I highly recommend this game. It is in my hall of fame along with Oregan Trail and Where In The World Is Carmen San Diego

Introduction

Gameplay and zoombini quest, puzzle exploration and progression, development and localization, play logical journey of the zoombinis online.

Logical Journey of the Zoombinis is an educational puzzle video game that takes players on a captivating adventure with small blue creatures called Zoombinis.

Developed and published by Broderbund, this game challenges players’ logic and problem-solving skills through a series of intriguing puzzles.

Join the Zoombinis as they embark on a quest to find a new home and outsmart their adversaries, the Bloats.

Logical Journey of the Zoombinis , also known as Zoombinis Logical Journey , is the first installment in the Zoombinis video game series. It was developed by Broderbund and later re-released by The Learning Company .

This educational puzzle game offers players a unique experience where they must guide the Zoombinis through a series of logical challenges to help them find a new home.

The Zoombinis are adorable small blue creatures living peacefully on Zoombini Isle until they are ensnared by the Bloats. The game follows their journey to secure a new homeland by solving a range of logical puzzles.

These puzzles often incorporate the Zoombinis’ distinctive facial features as essential elements of the solutions.

For example, the ‘Allergic Cliffs’ puzzle presents players with two bridge choices, each allowing Zoombinis to cross only if they possess specific combinations of features.

With a total of 625 unique combinations, players can create up to two Zoombinis (twins) for each combination, resulting in a potential total of 1,250 Zoombinis. To win the game, 625 Zoombinis must be saved.

Zoombinis travel in groups of up to 16, navigating through a series of 12 puzzles divided into four sets of three puzzles each. Successfully completing a path of nine puzzles leads the Zoombinis to their new home, Zoombiniton (also known as Zoombiniville in the US version).

The first and last legs are mandatory for all Zoombinis. However, during the second leg, players have the option to choose either the north or south path.

Between each leg, Zoombinis can rest at a campsite for future use. As players successfully guide a party of 16 Zoombinis through a leg, a celebratory building is erected in Zoombiniton/Zoombiniville.

If three parties of 16 complete a leg, the difficulty level of that leg increases for subsequent journeys.

Logical Journey of the Zoombinis was crafted in 1995 and officially released in 1996. The original version, launched by Broderbund Europe in March 1996, featured English, French, and German languages.

Later that year, the US division of Broderbund released an updated US version, including minor alterations and name changes for certain in-game areas.

Logical Journey of the Zoombinis is a captivating educational game that combines entertainment with brain-teasing challenges.

Through engaging puzzles and the quest for a new home, players exercise critical thinking, pattern recognition, and problem-solving skills. Join the Zoombinis on their adventure, and immerse yourself in a world of logical exploration and fun.
