2024 French Open men's final: Carlos Alcaraz defeats Alexander Zverev in 5 sets at Roland Garros

Alcaraz becomes youngest man to win a grand slam in all three surfaces.

After an intense five-set battle, world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz won the 2024 French Open with a 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 4 Alexander Zverev. This is the 21-year-old's third Grand Slam trophy.

Sunday's result helped Alcaraz make history as the youngest man to win a major on all three surfaces, passing his countryman Rafael Nadal who did so at 22 years old.

Alcaraz laid on the court and took in the moment after an intense four hours and 20 minutes. Encounters between Zverev and Alcaraz always deliver, and Sunday's meeting was no different. Their head-to-head is now even at 5-5. 

Zverev was off to a rough start as he registered two double faults at the beginning of the match. Alcaraz took advantage of the opportunity and gained some momentum. After 43 minutes, Alcaraz took the first set against the opponent who had beaten him in the quarterfinals of this tournament two years ago.

Alcaraz was first to serve in the second set and also found himself struggling. He picked up his second double fault late in the first game, but held on to take a 1-0 lead. Instead of knocking him down, this became a wakeup call for Zverev and the German star went on to win the second and third sets. 

Alcaraz had a strong showing in the fourth set despite needing a medical timeout to take care of his left thigh. He forced the decider and took care of business against a persistent Zverev, who is still on the search for his first major title.

Alcaraz picked up his first trophy at Roland Garros, and third overall Grand Slam, after a competitive battle that lasted four hours and 20 minutes. The 21-year-old Spanish star was down two sets, but he forced a decider to make history as the youngest man to win a major on all three surfaces.

Zverev gave Alcaraz plenty of issues and put on quite a show, but he is still one of the most talented players without a major title yet.

Spanish star Rafael Nadal, who has won a record-14 French Open titles, congratulated his countryman on what he described as an "immense victory."

"So happy for your successes!!!" Nadal wrote.

That wraps up yet another extraordinary day at Roland-Garros. It’s the first of two quarter-finals days on Tuesday with the likes of Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz all in action on Chatrier and the tennis starts at 11am local time.

Zverev survives late show

For the second successive match, Alexander Zverev survives a five-set battle to move into the Roland-Garros quarter-finals for the fourth successive year.

The German fourth seed comes back from two-sets-to-one down to win 4-6, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-2 after 4 hours and 11 minutes at 1.40am.

Zverev will get a day off on Tuesday before returning to take on Aussie Alex De Minaur in the last eight on Wednesday. Demon beat Daniil Medvedev in four sets earlier on Monday.

Zverev breaks for 3-1

Alexander Zverev takes the match by the scruff of the neck with the first break of the fifth.

The fourth seed had four break points in the second game of the decider but Holger Rune did well to hold, finally finishing the game to level at 1-1 with a brilliant forehand pass on the run

The German makes no mistake when he gets another two chances in the fourth game though and breaks for 3-1 with a big forehand return.

Late-night thriller

Alexander Zverev stays calm to hold at 5-6 and they’re into a fourth-set tiebreak.

The German wins a long, punishing rally to go ahead 3-1 and that advantage quickly becomes 5-1 when they swap ends. One more point earns Zverev five chances to seal the breaker and the fourth seed converts his 2nd when Holger Rune misses a forehand to take the shootout 7-2.

Into a decider at 1am Paris time...

Back comes Rune

Holger Rune has other ideas. The young Dane plays a brilliant game to break with Alexander Zverev serving for the set at 5-4, sealing the break-back with a forehand pass. He then holds to love to take him to within a game of victory with Zverev serving at 5-6...

Going five?

It looks like we might need a deciding set to separate Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune on Chatrier. Down two sets to one, the German breaks Rune in the seventh game of the fourth and is serving at 4-3.

Novak: We'll do some tests

Novak Djokovic has been into press this evening after his remarkable five-set win over Francisco Cerundolo earlier. The world No.1 was down two sets to one and trailed 4-2 in the fourth and had been struggling with an injury to his right knee since the early stages of the second set.

The defending champion said he started to feel much better once painkillers started to take effect but isn’t sure how he’ll feel when he wakes up on Tuesday morning.

“At one point I didn't know, to be honest, whether I should continue or not with what's happening,” admitted Djokovic, who plays Casper Ruud in the last eight on Wednesday.

“I got the medications, and then after the third set was done, I asked for more medications, and I got them.

“I guess we'll do some more screening and tests and check-ups tomorrow, as well. We have done some with the doctor right now after the match. Some positive news but also some maybe concerns, so let's see tomorrow.

“I don't know what will happen tomorrow or after tomorrow if I'll be able to step out on the court and play. You know, I hope so. Let's see what happens.”

Best moments of Day 9

While Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune battle into the early hours of Tuesday morning (it's just gone midnight in Paris and they're in the early stages of the third set), here's a reminder of some of the big stories on Monday at Roland-Garros 🧱

Rune steals third set

A dramatic finish to the third set on Chatrier goes the way of Holger Rune. The young Dane applies the pressure in the 12th game to create three set points with Zverev serving at 5-6 0-40. Incredibly, the fourth seed saves the first after a 39-shot rally but misses a high forehand volley on the next point to hand Rune the set 7-5. The Dane leads 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 as the clock approaches midnight in Paris.

Zverev will have to go the scenic route once again after his dramatic five-set third round win over Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor.

Ruud v Fritz highlights

Casper Ruud produced some big-time tennis on his way to a four-set win over American Taylor Fritz this evening on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. Here's the pick of the points from that fourth round battle.

Djokovic-Cerundolo highlights

Earlier this evening, for a second successive match here in Paris, Novak Djokovic came through in five sets, this time against Argentine Francisco Cerundolo.

Late night on Chatrier

This Alexander Zverev-Holger Rune match has the feel of a tight one on the main show court. Zverev has hit back to take the second set so it's one set all as the clock ticks past 11pm.

The two men have traded breaks early in the third, Rune ahead 2-1 after nearly two hours on court.

Ruud takes QF spot

It's another Paris quarter-final for Norway's Casper Ruud who beats Taylor Fritz in four sets on Lenglen 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The seventh seed and two-time runner up at Roland-Garros sets up a blockbuster with Novak Djokovic, who he beat in the Monte Carlo semi-finals in mid-April.

VICTORY FOR DJOKOVIC

For the second time in three days, Novak Djokovic finds a way to win on Chatrier.

The world No.1 breaks Francisco Cerundolo in the eighth game of the decider and serves out a 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory to put him into the Paris last eight. It took the 24-time Grand Slam champion 4 hours and 39 minutes to cross the finish line.

At one stage Djokovic trailed by two sets to one and by 4-2 in the fourth.

The win takes Djokovic to the top of the leaderboard for Grand Slam matches won on 370 victories – one more than Roger Federer.

And it takes the Serb to the top of the list for Grand Slam quarter-finals reached – 59 to Federer’s 58.

Novak down, Mirra highlights

It's all happening in Paris! Djokovic takes a nasty fall during the fourth game of the fifth - but is OK - and is currently washing the clay off his right arm...

Back on Chatrier, initially it was all Djokovic at the start of the fifth set only for things to change suddenly. The Serb breaks Cerundolo early before the Argentine hits straight back. Djokovic ahead 2-1 on serve...

Ruud edges marathon set

The Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz - sorry, CLAY-lor Fritz - fans will have been on the edge of their seats following events on Lenglen. And it's the Ruud fans who'll be celebrating after their man takes a first set that lasts well over an hour 8-6 in the breaker. The winner plays either Djokovic or Cerundolo on Wednesday.

Into a fifth!

For the second time in the tournament, Novak Djokovic has somehow dug himself out of a hole to drag himself into a fifth set.

Francisco Cerundolo can only watch as his 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 4-2 lead evaporates, and Djokovic breaks to take the fourth 7-5.

The top seed raises his arms to acknowledge the Chatrier roar as he heads to his bench. Remarkably, he's now looking the fresher, more energetic of the two after nearly four hours on court.

Cerundolo holds for 5-5, 4th set

The tension is building on Chatrier. Francisco Cerundolo was a couple of games away from the biggest win of his career when he led Novak Djokovic by two sets to one and 4-2 in the fourth only to throw in a shaky game on serve. We're still on serve now, it's 5-5 in the fourth and Djokovic is clinging on. The Chatrier crowd wants a fifth...

Djokovic in trouble - again

We've been here before over the last few days, but Novak Djokovic again finds himself down two sets to one on Chatrier - this time to Francisco Cerundolo - and today it feels serious.

Djokovic injured his right knee at the start of the second set, has been moving slower and slower since and now Cerundolo leads 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, a set away from his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

The trainer and doctor are back out for Djokovic after the third set finishes. Novak looks like he's continuing - for now - but he has a mountain to climb on the Paris clay.

Andreeva into first Slam QF

Teenager Mirra Andreeva is taking Paris by storm this fortnight and she's just moved into her first ever Grand Slam quarter-final.

The right-hander, who only just turned 17, outplayed the last Frenchwoman in the draw, Varvara Gracheva, 7-5, 6-2.

She'll play second seed Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the semis on Wednesday.

Twenty-four hours earlier, Dan Imhoff met the youngster to chat about her progress over the last 12 months.

Cerundolo takes second set 7-5

Top seed Novak Djokovic is in another scrap on Chatrier after Francisco Cerundolo strikes to break late in the set to level 1-6, 7-5.

The Argentine was rewarded for his patience, converting his ninth break point of the set. He's had chances to break in six of Djokovic's service games today.

Djokovic still on serve

After the trainer came out following the third game of the second set, Novak Djokovic has had to survive a couple of tough service holds. He's saved six out of six break points he's faced since picking up the knee problem, but we're still on serve, Cerundolo ahead 4-3.

On Lenglen 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva is a set away from a first Grand Slam quarter-final, up a set 7-5 on Varvara Gracheva.

Trainer out for Djokovic

Novak Djokovic has been sailing along smoothly on Chatrier against 23rd seed Francisco Cerundolo, up 6-1, 1-2 on serve.

Towards the end of the last game, though, the world No.1 appeared to tweak his right knee and he's immediately called for the trainer and is now receiving treatment during a medical time out.

Over on Lenglen, Varvara Gracheva and Mirra Andreeva have begun their fourth round meeting. Gracheva leads 3-2 first set, on serve.

De Groot gets Li re-match

The draws are out for the Roland-Garros wheelchair events, which begin on Tuesday.

In the women’s singles Diede De Groot opens up her campaign for another Roland-Garros title against China’s Xiaohui Li . The Dutchwoman has won the last 13 singles majors held.

It was Li that ended De Groot’s 145-match winning streak at the World Team Cup in Turkey in May, however. The 24-year-old's shock win helped China to a surprise title at the team event.

Great Britain’s Alfie Hewett is top seed in the men’s singles and plays Joachim Gerard from Belgium. The Brit could face doubles partner Gordon Reid in the last eight if both win their first matches.

Alex de Minaur recovered from a set down to book his first Roland-Garros quarter-final with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 win over No.5 seed Daniil Medvedev in front of a buoyant Court Suzanne-Lenglen crowd, including his small superfan.

Demon now faces either Holger Rune or Alexander Zverev, who take to Chatrier for the night match in just a few hours.

History on the line

It’s time for Novak Djokovic and Francisco Cerundolo to start their fourth round meeting on Chatrier on what could be an historic day for the Serb.

If he’s recovered from his 4hr 29min third round win over Lorenzo Musetti and can reach another Paris quarter-final this afternoon he will become the player with the most Grand Slam match victories of all time.

Djokovic and Roger Federer are currently tied on 369 wins apiece. Novak goes in search of No.370…

Demon dominating

It looks like Alex De Minaur is heading into his first Roland-Garros quarter-final, now up two sets to one against Daniil Medvedev.

The Aussie dropped the first set but is now in control against the former US Open champ, who has had the trainer out for treatment to his foot.

It would be the second major QF of Demon's career if he can navigate his way to victory. The world No.11 reached the last eight in New York in 2020. He leads 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 1-2 on serve in the fourth.

Tuesday schedule

Tomorrow the first singles quarter-finals will take place - two men's and two women's - and the order of play for those matches is out, all scheduled for Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Coco Gauff faces Ons Jabeur in the opening match at 11am. Iga Swiatek then takes on Marketa Vondrousova in the second day match.

Grigor Dimitrov plays Jannik Sinner in the last of the day session matches before Tuesday's night session when Carlos Alcaraz goes up against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Daniil and Demon split sets

No.11 seed Alex de Minaur has pulled a set back to level his fourth round tie with Daniil Medvedev.

De Minaur is bidding for a first quarter-final in Paris, while Medvedev reached this stage in 2021.

The prize for the winner is a last-eight meeting with either Holger Rune or Alexander Zverev who will be walking on to Court Philippe Chatrier in a matter of hours for the night session.

Grigor Dimitrov is back on Tuesday to face second seed Jannik Sinner in the Bulgarian's first Roland-Garros quarter-final of his career.

Rybakina rules

Earlier today Elena Rybakina booked her second appearance in the Roland-Garros quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Elina Svitolina.

Djokovic on court at 4pm

The next match on Chatrier will see Novak Djokovic take on Francisco Cerundolo for the first time as both play for a place in the last eight.

They'll be on court at 4pm local time, so not for a couple of hours.

That match was one of our 'Five to watch on Day 9'.

Sabalenka sails through

Aryna Sabalenka makes it 11 straight wins at Grand Slam level this year as the Australian Open champion powers past American Emma Navarro on Chatrier.

The world No.2 ensures all top four seeds in the women’s draw are into the last eight, joining Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina, with a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 win.

She is yet to drop a set here in Paris and plays Varvara Gracheva or Mirra Andreeva on Wednesday for a spot in the semis.

Lenglen welcomes Daniil and Demon

The first men's singles of the day is under way on Lenglen with Daniil Medvedev and Alex De Minaur meeting for a ninth time, but a first match on clay. Medvedev leads their head to head 6-2 as both go for a quarter-final spot.

Make a night of it

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev and No.13 seed Holger Rune headline the night session.

Rune has made the quarter-finals for the past two years and has ambition and self-belief in abundance. But Zverev is a three-time semi-finalist and has been making some changes to his game that seem to be paying off.

Seventeen-year-old Mirra Andreeva burst on to the Grand Slam scene with a third-round showing at Roland-Garros last year.

She's had a busy time since then, including making the fourth round at Wimbledon and in Melbourne.

Dan Imhoff sat down with the amiable teenager and spoke with her about how she's finding life at the top of her sport.

Paolini powers on

The Italian train keeps rolling at RG as Jasmine Paolini comes back to beat Elina Avanesyan in three sets on Lenglen to book her first ever Grand Slam quarter-final spot.

The 12th seed hit back impressively to move on 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 and will face fourth seed Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Over on Chatrier Aryna Sabalenka is cruising, up 4-1 on American Emma Navarro.

Rybakina into final eight

No.4 seed and 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina is through to the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Elina Svitolina in just 69 minutes. 

The 2022 Wimbledon champion made the quarter-finals here in 2021 (her best result at Roland-Garros), and will now face either twelfth seed Jasmine Paolini or Elina Avanesyan who are over on Suzanne-Lenglen.

Avanesyan is currently a set up against the Italian, but Paolini has moved to 4-0 up in the second.

Over on Lenglen, Italy's Jasmine Paolini gets things under way against Elina Avanesyan, and then No.5 seed Daniil Medvedev comes up against Australian Alex de Minaur.

Simonne-Mathieu hosts men's doubles first up as the French pairing of Gregoire Barrere and Lucas Pouille take on No.3 seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury.
