How to Fill a LAMY Fountain Pen

LAMY is an incredibly popular fountain pen brand, featuring many fountain pen models such as the safari  which are commonly purchased as a first fountain pen.

Filling a LAMY fountain pen with ink cartridges or bottled ink can take a little getting used to if you're not familiar with how fountain pens work. Here I'll show you how to do both of these with LAMY safari fountain pens.

The ink filling process for the LAMY safari is similar for all LAMY cartridge/converter fountain pens. LAMY uses proprietary ink cartridges and converters for their pens, so the specific accessories used here are just for LAMY pens.

LAMY safari fountain pen overview

When you first receive your LAMY safari, it comes with a proprietary LAMY blue ink cartridge, and a cardboard ring spacer (to prevent the included ink cartridge from puncturing in transit). You can dispose of the cardboard ring.

The LAMY safari has an ink window so you can see your remaining ink level.

The barrel connects to the grip section with a double-threaded twist. The flat part of the barrel will always line up with the nib, but the logo side may or may not be facing up. So if you want to line up the LAMY logo side with your fountain pen nib (or not!), just try again to screw it on again a half-turn from where you originally started.

Using LAMY ink cartridges

LAMY uses proprietary ink cartridges  in their fountain pens, so only their brand will fit.

Alternatively, you can place the ink cartridge into the grip section without pushing firmly, then screw the barrel all the way onto the grip section. The action of screwing it tightly will help push the ink cartridge into place and puncture it. It's made to fit exactly!

You'll want to wait maybe 30 seconds or so if your feed is dry, as it takes a bit for the ink to work its way down to the nib via capillary action.

Screw the barrel back on. Now you should be ready to write!

Using the LAMY converter with bottled ink

If you'd like to fill your LAMY fountain pen from bottled ink (or an ink sample), it's pretty straightforward. You'll need a cartridge/converter to do this, which is often sold separately.

The LAMY Z28 converter has little posts on it to securely connect to several models like the safari and AL-star, but alternatively you can also use the LAMY Z27 converter  in these pens as well.

Steps to install and use a LAMY converter:

You may not get a full fill on the first try. Just do it again, and you'll get a bit more ink into the converter this time.

Wipe off any excess ink from the grip section before writing, unless you like having ink-stained fingers! A paper towel will do the trick.

Since you've inked up the pen through the feed, it's primed and ready to write. 

Hopefully this was helpful to empower you with the knowledge needed to get your LAMY fountain pen writing. 

One final note - LAMY fountain pens are tested for quality at the factory, so there may be a little blue ink residue remaining on the nib/feed. This is totally normal and doesn't mean your pen was used! This is why it's a good idea to clean any brand new fountain pen before using, particularly if you're using a different ink just to make sure you're getting a super fresh start and not worry about any potential weird ink mixing issues.

Lamy safari: a comprehensive guide.

The LAMY Safari is a minimalist favorite in the world of writing instruments. LAMY’s product design is guided by the Bauhaus principle in which form follows function. The LAMY Safari’s designers applied this philosophy to develop a fountain pen that was both utilitarian and appealing to all ages. Since many European schools use fountain pens to teach beginner writers, it was important to create a pen that could stand up to everyday use. To that end, the LAMY Safari is made using sturdy materials and has thoughtful features for a durable and ergonomic pen.

The nibs can be easily switched out to fit any occasion. From tiny notes to bold calligraphy, a Safari can do it all. Read our guide to learn how you can swap nibs on LAMY Safari fountain pens easily.

Another useful feature on the fountain pen is the ink window on the barrel. It lets you know how much ink you have left in your cartridge or converter.

Note that some LAMY Safari fountain pens may come with ink residue on the nib from being dip-tested at the LAMY factory. As with all fountain pens, we recommend cleaning your LAMY Safari before using it.

LAMY releases special inks to accompany some limited edition pens. Below, we’ll show you how to install an ink cartridge.

1. Remove the cardboard ring from the pen's barrel. Insert the cartridge into the pen’s grip section. There’s no need to push the cartridge down completely.

2. Twist the barrel back onto the grip section. Attaching the barrel automatically punctures the ink cartridge.

3. Set the pen aside with the nib pointing down. It may take up to an hour for the ink to reach the feed.

Externally, the LAMY Safari rollerball looks quite similar to its fountain pen sibling, though there are a few small differences.

For example, the finial on top of the cap has a simple line rather than a cross. The rollerball also does not have an ink viewing window.

1. Begin by removing the grip from the pen barrel.

2. Place the refill inside the grip of the pen.

3. Twist the grip back on the pen barrel.

The LAMY Safari ballpoint was thoughtfully designed to share a design aesthetic with its Safari siblings, while also having its own unique features. The pen swaps out the cap for a retractable mechanism that makes it easy to write at a moment's notice. Like the rollerball pen, the ballpoint has a molded grip section that is less pronounced while still providing guidance for an ergonomic grip.

The pen comes with a smooth-writing ballpoint refill. The ink isn't particularly vivid or dark, but we find it suitable for everyday use. Plus, a ballpoint will write on surfaces like receipt paper, so it's especially handy to keep with you in a purse or bag.

1. Remove the nose cone from the barrel.

2. Place the refill inside the barrel of the pen.

3. Make sure the refill is firmly seated in the pen before screwing on the nose cone.

The included eraser can be replaced with the LZ18 eraser refill . While it erases cleanly, it's also fairly small. We recommend having a separate eraser if you erase frequently or need to erase large sections.

1. Remove the eraser refill under the eraser cap completely.

2. Insert one stick of lead into the pencil barrel.

3. Put the eraser refill and cap back on. Click to advance the lead.

The outstretched arm of our tracker gestures towards some treetops a few hundred yards away: his ability to spot the seemingly invisible is astounding. Luke, our guide, cuts the engine of the Land Cruiser and turns around: “Can you see? Just through that clearing to the left.” 

Following his direction through my binoculars, I pick out the majestic-looking bird: dark brown head with tufted crown, white breast and piercing yellow eyes. Luke fills me in: “Sometimes nicknamed the ‘leopard of the air’, it’s a martial eagle, with a wingspan of up to 2.5m, one of the world’s largest birds of prey, and the largest in Africa.” This apex predator remains on its perch for a precious few minutes, then suddenly takes flight and disappears into the distance.

I’ve come to andBeyond’s Phinda Mountain Lodge in eastern South Africa on a birdwatching safari. The lodge sits in an elevated position with views across Phinda Private Game Reserve ’s 73,800 acres; its seven ecosystems offer an unusually varied habitat, from lush greenery to open savannah. The foothills of the low‑lying Lebombo mountains stretch 500 miles north into Mozambique, and the azure waters of the Indian Ocean lie just 20 miles east.

Much of our first morning is hijacked by my enthusiasm to identify every bird we see, which means we get no further than 200 yards from the lodge in the first hour. But in the afternoon, we head directly to the dry sand forest, which is home to unusual endemic species.

Surrounded by an elephant exclusion fence, we leave the vehicle and set out on foot – as strict protocol dictates, our guide leads from the front with a high-calibre rifle in hand. Orchids and lichen grow in profusion, and some of the Lebombo wattle trees are believed to date back over 1,000 years. The dense vegetation makes getting a good view of the birds more challenging, but we still spot plenty, including African green pigeons, the paradise flycatcher with its unmistakably long tail feathers, and the crested barbet. Then we’re treated to the endemic pink-throated twinspot, a distinctive waxbill with a bright head and black chest with white spots. Extant in just a handful of other locations nearby, this is a favourite for many visiting birders.

My bird knowledge – largely limited to the British Isles – is of little help here in South Africa, so my guide has been invaluable. However, I’ve also been given access to the world’s first AI-supported binoculars, released this year, which enable me to make positive IDs myself. The Swarovski Optik AX Visio (£3,820) combines high-end optics (10x32) with bird identification software. You get the desired bird in your sights, and at the press of a button a suggested species appears on the heads-up display. Behind the scenes, the binoculars are cross-checking the image and GPS coordinates against Merlin Bird ID’s extensive database of more than 8,000 bird species (Merlin’s app is divided up into groups, allowing you to download extra information on the species found in a given region; I installed the South Africa pack of 712 birds.)

Making our way in the vehicle once again, we come across zebra with red-billed oxpeckers picking ticks and parasites from their backs. A little further on, we glimpse a southern fiscal; a black-and-white shrike that also goes by the name of butcher bird due to its habit of impaling its prey on acacia thorns for later consumption. Then, as we pass a small water source, a bright colour flashes by before perching on a small branch; it’s a malachite kingfisher. Meanwhile, a three-banded plover moves busily along the water’s edge, foraging for insects. Luke then spots its nest, which is little more than a shallow depression on the beach containing two small grey mottled eggs.

Over the course of three days, the binoculars help me correctly identify 68 species of bird. Although there are a few, around 30, with which the technology struggled. Sometimes the bird is too far away, or it is obscured by twigs, or the image was blurred – but more often than not, with a good, clear view, the binoculars do an impressive job of identification. Moreover, because a photo is saved with each press of the button, I have a comprehensive photographic diary for later scrutiny.

On my last day, as the sun drops low on the horizon, we stop at a clearing next to the waters of the Mvubu dam, which makes a sublime setting for sundowners. A handful of blue-cheeked bee-eaters flutter above the still waters, a flock of white-faced whistling ducks complete their final flyby, and the nearby hippos quieten their grunting for the night. Biltong and drinks polished off, we hop back in the vehicle and make our way under a starry night sky. Sitting back, I reflect on my first birding safari experience – spotting more than 100 bird species, taking in the big five along the way and myriad other wildlife, it’s been as rewarding a trip as I could have hoped for.
