Dodge Journey P0660: Meaning, Causes, & Diagnosis

P0660 Dodge Journey

P0660 is a somewhat common OBDII code.  It’s generic, so it has the same meaning for the Dodge Journey as it would any other vehicle made for the 1996 model year and up.

This code indicates that there is an issue with the bank 1 side of the intake manifold valve tuning control circuit. Common causes for P0660 include a bad wiring harness to/from the intake tuning valve, a bad PCM, or a bad intake manifold tuning valve control circuit.  It’s most commonly caused by wiring issues.

P0660 Definition: Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Control Circuit Open (Bank 1)

P0660 Definition Dodge Journey

Here’s the meaning of the P0660 definition divided into its three distinct parts.

Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Control Circuit

The intake manifold tuning valve control system is responsible for redirecting air inside your Journey’s intake manifold .

It relieves air pressure on the opposite side of the intake manifold.  Or, it can channel air down a completely different runner for power/efficiency purposes.

An open implies that two points of an electrical circuit are externally disconnected.  In this case, the two points in question are the PCM and the intake manifold tuning valve control circuit.

The wiring between these two parts of your Journey may run through the CAN bus system, which is a wiring junction.  Getting a schematic for your vehicle (the exact model year and engine combination is essential) can make determining the cause of P0660 much easier.  You should do a quick visual inspection for obvious issues before doing so (more on that below).

Any one of your Journey’s modules can detect this issue.  Examples of different modules include body control, transmission, ABS, traction control.  If there’s a PCM issue , the other modules can still report P0660.

Bank 1 is the part of your vehicle with the first cylinder.  You don’t need to concern yourself with this if you have an inline four-cylinder engine or inline-six.

P0660 Symptoms: Dodge Journey

There usually are symptoms associated with P0660 .  Here are the most common ones:

  • Check engine light
  • Decreased power at the higher end of the RPM range
  • Decreased fuel mileage
  • Rough/choppy idle
  • Difficulty starting

It’s more likely that the decreased engine power will be at the higher end of the RPM range. It can happen at any engine speed.  You may only notice the check engine light.

Dodge Journey P0660 Causes and Diagnostics

P0660 Diagnosis

Here are the most common causes of P0660 and a good order to diagnose your Dodge Journey in at home.

1. Check for Manufacturers Communications

Manufacturers (including Dodge) send communications via “technical service bulletin,” commonly referred to as TSB’s.  While this site doesn’t keep a database of them, they are easy to find online .

If you click on the link above, it’ll take you to the NHTSA website in a new window.  Look for your exact year and engine combination Dodge Journey on there.  If there is a TSB related to the intake manifold tuning valve, it gives you a great place to start your diagnosis with a known point of failure.

2. Inspect the Wiring Harness

Check the wiring connector on the bank one side of the intake manifold tuning valve control circuit.

Examine where it plugs into the harness. Make sure that there is no visible damage to it or the pins inside.  If there is damage, you may need to repin or replace it.  If there is corrosion, use a good electrical contact cleaner to clean it.

Now that you’ve established that the harness connector looks good, examine the wiring coming from the intake manifold control valve as far as you can.  Look for damaged, frayed, or burnt wiring.  If there is, replace the wiring in question.

Verify that the ground wire is solid and free of corrosion where it bolts to the body, engine, or frame. Then, run a temporary ground to the intake manifold tuning control valve.  If it solves the problem, you’ll need to fix your Journey’s OEM ground wire.

3. Bad CAN Bus

The CAN bus is responsible for taking information from the various sensors and sending it to whatever modules need it (including the PCM).

If the wiring harness seems fine until it reaches the CAN bus system, its pins will need to be inspected, which is getting into the weeds for most shade tree mechanics.

A mechanic would be able to use a specialized scanner to determine precisely where in the wiring system the wiring harness is open and causing P0660 in your Journey.  They could also check the continuity of the circuits.

4. Other Causes

  • Bad PCM/ECM- While the PCM is rarely the problem with most codes.  If everything checked out with the wiring, replacing or reflashing the PCM can clear P0660.  Have a mechanic take a look at your Journey before replacing a PCM.
  • Bad Intake Manifold Tuning Valve- P0660 indicates a wiring issue with the intake manifold tuning valve.  But, if its wiring can fail internally, which will throw the code.  It’s not very high on the probability scale.

It can be difficult to chase down some of the wiring issues that can cause P0660 in the Dodge Journey.  But, it’ll often be caused by something that is easy to see under the engine bay.  There’s nothing wrong with having a look.  Good luck!

  • Get Help with P0660

When a code P0660 is stored in your OBD II equipped vehicle, it means that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an open circuit in the intake manifold air control (IMAC) solenoid circuit for engine bank one. Bank 1 indicates that the malfunction has occurred in the bank of the engine that contains the number one cylinder. The term open can be substituted for disconnected or broken.

The purpose of the IMAC system is to fine tune and regulate air flow as it enters the lower intake manifold, cylinder heads, and the combustion chambers. Controlled by the PCM, the air control solenoid opens/closes one or more flaps which fit snugly into the intake port of a particular (or multiple) cylinder. Sometimes intake manifold runner flaps, the IMAC flaps are attached to an electronic solenoid via a rod or shaft. In some cases, the IMAC flaps are bolted to a thin metal rod that runs the length of each cylinder head and through each intake port. In this case, all of the flaps can be opened at the same time and with one solenoid. Of course, this also means that all of the flaps may be rendered inoperative by a single flap that is stuck or binding – or by a defective solenoid. Automakers utilize varying types of IMAC systems. Always consult a reliable vehicle information source for the specifics of the IMAC system with which the vehicle in question is equipped.

To determine whether the IMAC actuator is functioning properly, the PCM monitors input voltage signals from the IMAC solenoid, manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor, manifold air temperature sensor, intake air temperature sensor, throttle position sensor, the oxygen sensors, and mass airflow (MAF) sensor. Once certain air intake, vehicle speed, and throttle position conditions are detected, the PCM adjusts actual air flap position accordingly. If the PCM doesn’t recognize a level of IMAC circuit voltage that is within preset parameters, a code P0660 will be stored and a malfunction indicator lamp may be illuminated. Multiple ignition cycles, with an IMAC actuator failure, will often be required for the MIL to be illuminated.

Defective IMAC actuator solenoid

Loose or binding intake manifold runners

Bad intake manifold runner position sensor

Open or shorted wiring in the IMAC solenoid control circuit

Faulty MAP Sensor

Corroded IMAC solenoid connector

Reduction in engine performance, especially at low RPM levels

Diminished fuel efficiency

Engine surge

If I were preparing to diagnose a code P0660, I would gain access to a diagnostic scanner, a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM), and a source of reliable vehicle information.

Technical service bulletins (TSB) that resemble the code stored, vehicle (year, make, model, and engine), and symptoms exhibited could net a faster diagnosis. TSB information can be found in your vehicle information source.

Prior to clearing stored codes, use the scanner (connected to the vehicle diagnostic port) to retrieve all stored codes and pertinent freeze frame data. Write the information down (in case the code/s proves to be an intermittent one). Once codes are recorded, clear the codes and test drive the vehicle. One of two things will likely occur; the code will be restored or the PCM will enter readiness mode. If the code is intermittent the PCM may enter readiness mode. If this occurs, the condition which caused the P0660 to be stored may need to worsen before an accurate diagnosis can be made. Continue with the diagnosis if the code is reset.

Use your vehicle information source to obtain connector face views, connector pinout charts, component locator charts, wiring diagrams, and diagnostic flow charts (pertaining to the code and vehicle in question). Perform a visual inspection of related wiring and connectors and repair or replace wiring that has been cut, burned, or damaged.

Use the DVOM to test voltage and ground circuits at the IMAC solenoid connector and the PCM connector. If no voltage is present, check system relays and related fuses. Replace defective relays and/or blown (or otherwise defective) fuses as required. Test IMAC circuits and system components following manufacturer’s guidelines. If voltage and ground are not detected at the IMAC solenoid, test the corresponding circuit at the PCM connector. If voltage is detected there, suspect an open circuit between the component in question and the PCM. If voltage is not discovered there, suspect a defective PCM or a programming error.

2010 dodge journey 3.5 code p0660

  • Add to quote

So I have a 2010 Dodge Journey 3.5 with 2 issues. Fault code alternates between P0660 and P1005. Both are related to intake tuning valve. I looked at all the connectors, ohmed out wires and even put a new valve on. Of course the light comes back on. Usually the next day, sometimes the 2nd day. When I replaced the valve there was engine oil on it. I thought this was odd. It has started using oil now since the light has been coming on. About a quart every 2 weeks. I do not see any oil in the PVC hose or air filter housing. Its a V-6 and I replaced the rear actuator. Any ideas or anybody seen this before? The only other thing I found was the air filter was extremely dirty. Of course I replaced it, but it has had no change. Thanks. Birdtracker

2010 dodge journey 3.5 code p0660

when you had the actuator off did you check to see if the valve in the intake moved free? we've seen some of them broken or sticking and needed to replace the intake.

On the rear actuator the blade is on the motor. I did take the actuator off the front one and the valve does turn freely. I am asking myself if I need the front actuator. Birdtracker

alshttp://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-2010-Chrysler-Dodge-Intake-Manifold-Tuning-Valve-Actuator-OEM-NEW-MOPAR-/321225120325o another question why do they give you 2 big orings and 1 small one. I did not see a small one and it only uses 1 large oring. I bought mine thru the dealer. Just used the ebay ad for the picture. Birdtracker

that is the one I replaced. The front one is only a motor. From what I read after "googling" oil consumption, is that these are real POS. Birdtracker

i should of specified, but i posted the pic to show you where they show the small o-ring that you mentioned. to be honest the only trouble we see with these engines are the lifters/tappets being noisey, replace the rocker assemblies and quiet again.

I am gonna pull it back out and look in with a mirror and see if its in the housing in a holder. Maybe it fell off. Thanks for the help. Birdtracker

So I tryed a few things and seems the engine light has not returned in over a week. If it comes back on now, I think I will strike the biggest match I can find and burn it to the ground. What an aggravating POS. Birdtracker

So, did you solve this or, did the owner just unload it? I'm getting desperate.

How did you solve this? I'm having similar issues.

The owner unloaded it. It was drinking oil, the trans was going south, needed brakes, and tires. I would look at the intake manifold. Is yours using oil? Birdtracker

I replaced the tuning valve with 1 from a scrap yard. Do you think the one from wreckers had a problem with the connector?

Check EGR system....... Starts to get sticky and causes excess crankcase vacuum.......eats oil.

2010 dodge journey 3.5 code p0660

I did head gaskets on my 3.5 this spring, and although I wasn't having the same issue as the OP, when I removed the intake plenum there was at least a cup of what only could be described as a combo of oil and raw fuel. It was sloshing around there fairly good. Maybe this is what OP has and screwing with that valve? Mine had 169,000 miles on it and I had never cleaned the plenum out until now.

I was getting code p2006 and I could not get it to clear. The dealer said it was the tuning valve just like the one in the picture above. I changed that but now I keep getting code p1005.

My oil seems fine.

no he unloaded it, first it was using alot of oil, the transmission started slipping, it needed tires and brakes. He just didn't see the reason to put all the money into it and still have a turd. Birdtracker

thanks. I'm going crazy trying to figure this out. I just bought a brand new valve thinking the one from the wreckers was bad but that wasn't the case. I've inspected the wires and can't see any thing wrong with them either. I don't know where else to look.

so is yours just a check engine light or is yours using oil or both? Did you replace both valves or just one? Did you take the front one off and see if the flapper turns inside the intake? Birdtracker

I have a little bit of oil in my manifold. I only replaced the back valve as that was the one the code was telling me too. I also had it diagnosed at the dodge dealer. I was not able to clear the first code (p2006 I think) that's what made the dealer think the valve was worn out. Once i put the new one on the code cleared and CEL went out right away. I took it for a test drive and all seemed good but the 2nd time I drove it the CEL came back but this time it was p1005 it says poor connection or faulty wire. I've visually checked the wires and connectors and they look ok. I'm not skilled enough to test them with a meter. I also jut took the front valve off and everything seems to move freely.

I also just noticed that when I clear the code and start the car I can not get it to rev higher than about 2500 rpms unless I turn the car off and restart it. Could this be related?

well you need to have the wires ohmed out from the valves to the pcm. They had a problem with wires being rubbed thru. Its always going to take 2 drives to get the light to come back on. It (pcm) has to see a fault 2 times in a row. Birdtracker
