Kien Giang Province, Vietnam

Very popular and touristy because of provincial destinations like Phú Quôc Island and Rach Giá, the Kiên Giang Province is one of the most famous provinces in Southern Vietnam. An integral part of the Mekong Delta Region, the Kiên Giang Province relies heavily on rice farming, fishing, and tourism.

The most renowned features of the province are its scenic coastline and numerous island paradises. The growth of Kiên Giang as a tourist destination is steadily building as more and more visitors rave about how this province is a place that shouldn’t be ignored. Now is the time to visit the Kiên Giang Province, before the crowds get too big.

How to Get to Kien Giang

Image of boats in Kien Giang Province in Vietnam

The Kiên Giang Province is located on the coast of Southern Vietnam where it is bordered by 5 Vietnamese provinces, Cambodia, and the Gulf of Thailand. Within the province, there are 12 districts, 3 cities, and numerous communes. Interestingly, the provincial boundaries include both land and sea. Rach Giá, the provincial capital, is at the center of Kien Giang is located on the coast.

Vietnam’s famous southern city, Ho Chi Minh , is relatively close to the province with the distance between the two destinations being about 242 km (150 miles). Travelers who are going by car should expect to spend about 4.5 hours in their vehicle, however, you can also travel by plane, train, or public bus, which will take you to Rach Giá.

Long before Kiên Giang became a province, the area was made up of smaller towns that were ruled by Lord Nguyen Phuc Dong Khoat. One of these towns, Ha Tien , covered a significant amount of territory, and in 1832, it became a province. Just a few decades later under French colonization, Ha Tien was broken into two parts.

These divisions created Rach Giá, while Hà Tiên remained as a seat of power. For some time, Hà Tiên and Rach Giá were ruled as separate entities, but as development in the area grew, the government ultimately decided to combine the two to create the Kiên Giang Province. Today, both Hà Tiên and Rach Giá are popular city destinations within the greater provincial area.

While the province has undergone numerous big changes in history, the area today has become known as Vietnam’s “Pearl of the Southern Sea”. The locals are proud to show off their history, culture, and land. Historical sites in the Kiên Giang Province include the Temple and Tomb of Nguyen Trung Truc , who is a national hero and various pagodas.

Visitors to the province will not only get to explore a beautiful landscape but also the diverse cultures within Kiên Giang.

  • The average elevation of the Kiên Giang Province is 1 foot 3 inches above sea level
  • There are 12 districts, 3 cities, 12 towns, 118 communes, and 15 wards in Kiên Giang
  • As of 2011, about 1,714,100 people live in the Kiên Giang Province

Capital City

The provincial capital city of the Kiên Giang Province is Rach Giá , which sits on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. Interestingly, Rach Giá is the only city in the country where a “lan bién” project was planned by the Vietnamese government to expand the territory out into the ocean.

Image of Nguyen Trung Truc street in Rach Gia, Vietnam

This expansion has made Rach Giá one of the largest cities in Southwest Vietnam, even though a significant portion of its territory covers water. For tourists, Rach Giá is an important hub for fun activities and transport to other destinations in Southern Vietnam. Most significantly, it has both ferries and hydrofoils that can take visitors from the mainland to Phú Quôc Island .

Visitors may also choose to travel by boat to other destinations like Hà Tiên or Côn Dào Island , which is to the south in the Bà Ria-Vūng Tàu Province. Tourists who are staying in Rach Giá will find that there are many day trips and activities around the city. Main attractions in Rach Giá include Tam Quan Gate, Nguyen Trung Truc Temple, Tam Bao Pagoda, and the Phat Long Pagoda.

Visitors should also take the time to explore local areas like the markets, parks, and shops in Rach Giá. Whether you’re planning to explore the city for a few days or just staying the night, there are many quality accommodations and dining establishments ready to care for travelers on their journey.

One of the top-rated places to stay in Rach Giá is the STAY Hostel 2, which has been recently refurbished. Located in the heart of the harbor, the hostel is just steps from the ferry and 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) away from the Tam Bao Pagoda.

Rach Giá also has a mix of quality restaurants that range from small cafes to fine dining establishments that serve both local and international cuisine. Some of the traveler’s favorite restaurants in the city include the Atelier Café 68, Number One, Rock68, and the King BBBQ Buffet. All of these establishments serve a variety of cuisines and there are options for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Famous Towns in Kien Giang

In addition to Rach Giá, the Kiên Giang Province has a few towns that have become tourist hotspots. All along the coast, there are seaside towns like Hà Tiên that charm visitors with their streets and shops. There are also numerous islands within the province that are open to visitors.

Phú Quôc is the most famous island in the Kiên Giang Province and it has become one of the most visited destinations in Southern Vietnam.

Tour the Mo So Caves

Inland, near Kiên Giang Town, the jagged terrain is known for hiding some extraordinary caves. There are multiple caves within the Mo So system and local guides can help visitors through the maze.

On Phú Quôc Island, people love Bāi Tam Sao, Khem, and Ông Lang beach.

Kiên Giang Province’s southern location is mostly mild and temperate throughout the year. The only time when the weather could impede a vacation would be during the rainy season . Most of the regional rainfall occurs from May to early November. Though, the weather begins to calm down by late October. During the rainy season, temperatures and humidity will be higher.

The best time to visit the Kiên Giang Province is from December to April, which is during the dry season . Temperatures will be cooler and with less rainfall, vacation activities won’t be ruined. • Travel Blog

Among provinces of the Mekong Delta , Kiên Giang has appealed to more and more visitors thanks to its unspoiled beaches, isolated islands, and historic structures dating back hundreds of years. Although it’s taken to be a remote place of the Mekong Delta, Kiên Giang is surely an indispensable part of a journey to seek the greatest things of Vietnam. Before you go, get to know more how to go and have the fullest experience there.

Where is Kiên Giang?

Kiên Giang is a remote region of the Mekong Delta since it borders An Giang, Cần Thơ, Cà Mau, Hậu Giang Provinces, Thailand Bay and Cambodia. Blessed with countless phenomenal beaches with transparent turquoise water, isolated islands, irresistible landscapes, captivating local cultures, and attractive cuisine, the area must be set in your itinerary to Vietnam. One of the renowned travel destinations in Kiên Giang is Phú Quốc Island, where there are a lot of theme parks for entertainment and high-end resorts, always catching the visitors’ eyes. That’s why it’s an essential part of any tours to the Mekong Delta.

How to get to Kiên Giang?

From Ho Chi Minh Minh City – the economic, cultural and political center of Vietnam, you will easily reach Kiên Giang by road. Just take National Route 1 to Long An, Tiền Giang, Vĩnh Long, Đồng Tháp and An Giang Province. Afterwards, turn to National Route 80 and go until you arrive in Rạch Giá and Hà Tiên – Kiên Giang Province. Another option to Kiên Giang Province, which is supposed to be more convenient is catching a bus at Miền Tây Bus Station, and it will drive you to the right destination; some prestigious bus lines are Phương Trang, Kum Ho, and Mai Linh.

If you are the person who prefers an easy journey and never intend to do something time-consuming, a tour, in which there are exciting activities and ideal tourist attractions in Kiên Giang should be what you must consider. There are various daily tours of travel agents and tour operators departing from Ho Chi Minh City to choose from. It’s not hard to book the tour in advance and you don’t need to spend too much time searching for directions on your map, what to see, how to get, etc.

When is the best time to visit Kiên Giang?

Kiên Giang is influenced by tropical monsoon climate, and especially by the southwest monsoon. Kiên Giang has two seasons; rainy season (April to September and dry season (October to March). It’s recommended that you should make a trip to this province in the dry season because the weather by that time is comfortable; the sea is calm, ideal for exploring unspoiled islands.

Nevertheless, it’s known that Kiên Giang boasts of its beauty in different ways, subject to the season. The dry season is perfect for kicking back at beaches, but it’s more crowded while the place looks peaceful and tranquil during the rainy season. Interestingly, the rainy season is the time when you can enjoy exotic food there.

Where to stay in Kiên Giang?

Perhaps, you need to figure out how many days you would like to spend in Kiên Giang before picking out some accommodation. • The Unesco Kien Giang biosphere reserve

Before Phu Quoc became the suave, well-groomed ecotourism destination it is today, it was a quiet island of no more than 45,000 people. In just a few decades the island has grown to accommodate nearly 180,000 residents and thriving tourism industry - and yet more than 50% of Phu Quoc Island and its surrounding marine zone is still abundant with natural beauty.

The incredible ecological success is due to the UNESCO Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve, which directly protects land, water, and natural resources while providing support of the sustainable development of the surrounding region. The biosphere also functions as a cultural protector, integrating traditional knowledge into ecosystem management, and seeking local input into development decisions.

The UNESCO reserve was established in 2006 and since then it has become one of the best places in Vietnam to experience nature in its truest forms. The biosphere protects a system of 105 islands (Phu Quoc is the largest), which have remained a critical habitat for hundreds of plant and animal species, including endangered species. The surrounding ocean has been so well protected that fishing remains a primary industry without causing damage to the balance of the local ecosystem. The marine life and resources in this area, especially squid, cuttlefish, and anchovies, are considered some of the best in the entire southwest region of Vietnam, and are critical to local livelihood.

Phu Quoc island

The UNESCO biosphere reserve is Phu Quoc Island's most precious treasure and should be explored both on land and by sea.

On Land - Phu Quoc National Park

More than half of the northern part of Phu Quoc Island is devoted to Phu Quoc National Park, the terrestrial zone of the UNESCO biosphere reserve. A hike through the dense evergreen forest takes travelers through a web of intricately-layered ecosystems and climate zones cascading down the mountain range. Primeval forest merges with secondary and indigo forests; lowlands flood into wetlands; mangrove trees and seagrass protect coastal mudflats and  waterways; rare orchid species grow alongside medicinal plants.

Bird-watchers will be busy with more than 200 different native bird species, while photographers with keen eyes should keep a lookout for rare wildlife such as macaques, loris, and langurs. Visitors unconcerned with genus or species will nevertheless enjoy being immersed in the birdsong cacophony of uninhibited nature.

Trek to the top of Mount Chua ("God Mountain", also known as "the roof of Phu Quoc") to see the forest extend to a watery blue horizon in an infinity of green hues. If Mount Chua is closed for construction, Mount Heaven is the second highest peak and a worthy alternative, with a name that suits the views. The half-day hike is rewarding from beginning to end, as swimmable streams and charging waterfalls irrigate the forest landscape in the rainy reason.

mount Chua

Island hopping the An Thoi Archipelage is one of the most popular ways to explore Phu Quoc's natural world. A tour boat will take you between uninhabited islands, where nature grows bold, wild, and untrampled.

By Sea - Phu Quoc Marine Reserve

The cerulean waters surrounding Phu Quoc and its dozens of island neighbors are home to their own diverse ecosystems. A complete 41% of the area around these islands comprises a system of hundreds of species of hard and soft coral and the fish that occupy them. The seaweeds and seagrass beds that flourish here provide essential habitat for critically endangered animals like hawksbill and green turtles, as well as the dugong, a marine species on the brink of extinction that can only be found in one other place in Vietnam.

Water sports and activities are the best way to get intimate with nature in Phu Quoc. Snorkeling opportunities are abundant and tropical fish - unthreatened by humans here in their protected habitat - are both colorful and plentiful. Get PADI certified to take the experience to the next level, exploring the biosphere to its depths on a scuba dive.

Beaches mark the border of the two regions. Each island of the biosphere has its own unique beaches, shaped by different tides, ecosystems, and geological histories. Phu Quoc Island - the largest of them all and a beach destination at its heart - has some of the longest and prettiest stretches, including popular Sao Beach, which is bracketed to the north and south by jungle. To combine wildlife observation with swimming and sunbathing, head to "Starfish Beach" near Rach Vem Village, where starfish cluster on rocks under the clear water. On lucky nights, it's possible to see bioluminescent plankton illuminating the transparent water, yet another artful contribution to the biosphere.

The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protects a complex system of hard and soft coral reefs

Because Hon Tre is near Rach Gia, the train ticket to Hon Tre island is only about 60.000 – 70.000 / time. The seawater in Hon Tre is not as green and clear as in Phu Quoc Island, but in return, the strange and unspoiled landscape makes the people completely conquered.

According to Hon Tre tourism experience, bring tents and barbecue stoves, then buy seafood from local people and hold a seaside BBQ party is an extremely interesting activity. Note that if you buy seafood, buying seafood in the afternoon because people just caught it onshore is the cheapest and most delicious, avoid buying right near the pier because the price will be several times more expensive. This is the next place to enjoy the beautiful scenery in Kien Giang that origin travel wants you to explore.

9. Hon Phu Tu

Hon Phu Tu belongs to Hon Phu Tu tourist area in Binh An commune, Kien Luong district, Kien Giang province. 38km from Ha Tien city centre and about 70km from Rach Gia city. This is a beautiful and famous landscape, dubbed the “Ha Long Bay” of Kien Giang and was recognized as a national scenic spot in 1989.

Hon Phu Tu is a small rocky island located about 110m from the mainland, consisting of two adjoining rocks on a rocky platform 5m high above sea level. In which, the big rock (Hon Phu) is about 33.6m high, the small rock (Hon Tu) is about 30m high. Precisely from the terrain of two adjacent stone pillars, slightly inclined to the East in the middle of the sea. It is considered a symbol of father and son’s feelings. And there is also a legend full of human values about spiritual paternity.

Coming to Hon Phu Tu, you can also choose to visit two more beautiful landscapes: Bai Duong and Hang Pagoda.

10. Da Dung Mountain

Da Dung Mountain is a new tourist destination that is urging more steps from all over. Because its beauty is like Phong Nha cave on alluvial land. This is also a special gift that nature gives to Ha Tien land with enchanting beauty

Da Dung Mountain has about 14 large and small caves connected to create mysterious “mazes” and has a beauty like a stone sculpture.

Standing inside the bed of Da Dung mountain looking out. Visitors can see the wonderful beauty of the landscape and natural land of Ha Tien. Surrounding the mountain are rice fields stretching to the eye, lots of swamps, bushes create a wild and interesting landscape.

Da Dung Mountain attracts visitors not only because of the beautiful scenery around the mountain but also the unique names of the caves there. Each cave has very strange names based on the legend, the stalactite shape or the feeling that the cave gives visitors when stepping inside.
