Amazing Dolomites Alps – ITALY
Reviews of italy hiking & trekking tours.
Overall I really enjoyed the Amalfi walking tour. Staying in a small community was a welcome change from the large city tourist experience. The accommodations were as expected, and the Agritourisimo owners were lovely hosts. I especially enjoyed the homemade pasta and desserts. The wine tasting dinner was a lot of fun and the pizza was excellent. I could not have asked for a nicer group of fellow hikers. Our guide, Peter, was very personable, attentive to everyone’s needs and abilities and was knowledgable about the region. I am a 67 year old Canadian woman in excellent health and keep physically very active. I live in a location that is predominantly flat land. I made an effort to climb hills as much as possible to train for the walk but walking on ground is not enough to prepare for all the stone steps on the walks. Stair climbing and descending would be at good training routine. I found going down the steps very hard on the knees, but they felt better after a couple of days of walking on this terrain. I would caution anyone with knee or hip joint problems about choosing this tour. A 76 year old woman in our group had no problems at all. However, after falling on the loose rock the first day, an 85-year-old man from North America was not able to participate in most of the walks. Peter was able to suggest alternate activities for him and his wife and they were still able to enjoy the trip. Anyone older should have excellent balance and be used to walking on uneven terrain and climbing up and down rocky obstacles. I think an upper limit of 85 is overly optimistic for this tour.
The tour was wonderful for several reasons. Our guide, Veriano, was knowledgeable and fit right in with our group. The size of the group was perfect, ages ranging from 27 to 71 years. Everyone was fit and up for the challenge.
Great value for money. Good tour guide. Excellent travel company. Some days the hiking was a bit light. Would have given it 5 stars if the hiking was every day. Also tourradar/intrepid could also consider providing a higher cost tour where we stay at different refuges every day. This will reduce the transportation constraints and time and increase the Dolomites amazing experience.

"It was a well organised trip . The tour guide Carmen was extremely patient and super FANTASTIC . She was always on top of things and managing a group of 50 is not easy . The hotels were excellent . Europmandu should request the hotels to do a better SERVING job at breakfast time . 40 to 50 people entering and eating at one time and god forbid if there is another group before or right after then nobody gets nothing . At the Florence hotel they had one coffee machine and 70 plus people . But , my OVERALL experience was very nice . I have travelled with 3 other companies within Europe and found EUROPMONDU to be one of the best..

ITALIAN GUIDED WALKING TOURS OPERATED BY LOCALS
Welcome to walk about italy: experts in walking tours.
I’m Gianni Stanghellini, owner and guide at Walk About Italy. I am a Ph.D. geologist with over two decades of experience in the realm of guided walking tours in Italy. For the past 22 years, I’ve dedicated myself to crafting remarkable journeys through this enchanting country. Hailing from Siena, a captivating medieval town nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, I remain firmly rooted here. The allure of this exquisite place has held me steadfast, and it’s from here that I continue to operate and shape unforgettable experiences.
Walk About Italy: Exploring Tuscany and Beyond
At Walk About Italy, our focus is on select regions, ensuring the pinnacle of Italy’s guided walking tours: Tuscany , the Amalfi Coast , Sicily , Umbria, Assisi & Le Marche , the Cinque Terre , Italian Alps & Dolomites and The Italian Lakes These seven destinations embody the rich tapestry of Italian beauty, each unique and awe-inspiring in its own right, beckoning to be explored.
A Boutique Enterprise Embracing Local Essence
Central to our ethos, we exclusively enlist local guides and drivers. Moreover, we gravitate toward intimate, family-owned restaurants and venture to small farms, offering you the opportunity to engage with the very heart of Italy’s agrarian heritage. Our commitment to fostering authentic connections means we facilitate interactions with locals at every turn.
In the words of G.K. Chesterton, “ The traveler sees what he sees; the tourist sees what he has come to see. ” Here at Walk About Italy, we invite you to transcend the role of a mere tourist, and instead, become an astute traveler, delving into the true essence of Italy.
Tuscan Splendors
Amazing medieval towns and stunning surrounding countryside: Siena, Chianti region, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Pienza, Val d’Orcia . You will travel with a small group.
Amalfi Coast Wonders
Walk the paths of the Amalfi Coast including Naples , the Vesuvius and Pompeii , with stunning views and amazing food. You will stay at charming hotels. Walk from village to village between, Amalfi, Vietri, Ravello .
The Secret Side of Sicily
From the charming islet of Ortigia to the Vendicari natural reserve . From the baroque pearl of Noto to the Byzantine of Pantalica. Then we transfer to the Aeolian Island of Lipari with its stunning panoramas on the archipelagos.
Umbria, Assisi & Le Marche Marvels
Umbria & Le Marche are really off-the-beaten-path. Although Assisi is well known because of Saint Francis, the area remains very genuine. Food and wines are superb here. The tour starts in the medieval town of Orvieto, one hour train ride from Rome. Continues to the small towns of Trevi, Montefalco and Bevagna and ends up in the Le Marche green countryside of Urbino, on the Adriatic sea.

Cinque Terre September 2023 This Cinque Terre 7 day walking tour was absolutely amazing! It’s worth every cent. Amazing walks, breathtaking scenery, scrumptious Italian food and wine. So well organized! This was my 5th trip with Walk About Italy.
Tuscany has my heart! This was a trip dreams are made of. I have always wanted to see Tuscany but I am not into touristy type trips. I was a little skeptical of this tour but booked it anyway. I was blown away….It exceeded my expectations. Our guides Daniele and Chiara were a JOY to be with. They shared their countryside with us and they shared themselves. Beautiful souls. For me the hiking was wonderful and I would have done more…but beware this is definitely more of a hiking than walking tour. The food was wonderful and the wine amazing! I highly recommend. I can’t wait to try another tour.
A fantastic, boutique walking tour. Ermes and Gianni were great guides who were very accommodating and supportive; Hotels were in great location, clean and friendly staff. Breakfast was great. Great food. The ability to accommodate for individuals food requirements was great. Ermes and Gianni were fantastic guides. They complemented each other with their guiding and jokes etc. We would recommend this tour to others.
I recently embarked on a captivating tour through the picturesque regions of Umbria and the Marche in Italy. Our itinerary included enchanting stops in Montefalco, Assisi, Spello, Urbino, and the stunning Adriatic coastline. Our experienced guides, Federico and Roberto, made the journey even more engaging. Gianni, the owner of Walk About Italy, joined our group for three days, infusing a personal touch into the experience. This adventure was genuinely extraordinary, and I can’t recommend it enough!

Some words about us
Excellence since 1998
“...one of the best vacations ever...”
Peggy and I had a fantastic walking tour in Tuscany! We want to give everyone in the Girosole organization who helped contribute a big “molto bene” for making this one of the best vacations ever. It’s obvious that Girosole had done a lot of research on the route, towns, accommodation and ristorantes. Everything that Girosole provided was first class. But what stood out for us was the customer service. We highly recommend Girosole and hope we’ll have the opportunity for returning – perhaps to explore Cinque Terre next time. Thanks once again for a memorable vacation.
“...wonderful and memorable experience...”
A truly wonderful and memorable experience! Luca was not only very knowledgeable and good company; he was always prepared to go the extra mile and nothing was too much trouble for him. We felt thoroughly spoilt. Thank you so much for all your efforts on our behalf. It really was a pleasure dealing with Girosole. Just as an aside: perhaps you should suggest that clients allow for A LOT of extra baggage space for pecorini cheese, paneforte, chianti classico vino, shoes and handbags!!!!!
“...enjoyed our trip immensely...”
Our trip was wonderful! Luca was an excellent guide, very efficient, knowledgeable, and personable. I enjoyed practicing my rusty Italian with him, & he taught me several proverbs & expressions. When he saw I was very interested in Alpine wildflowers he helped me find & identify some along the trails. He was a delightful companion. The tour was very well designed, in terms of our hiking ability & fitness level. We started with a fairly easy hike & worked our way up to more challenging. At the end we felt like we’d had a good workout, but were not exhausted. The other couple in our group were very close to us in terms of experience & fitness. We’d recommend your tours to any active people who want to see Italy off the beaten path. We enjoyed our trip immensely & will remember it (& Luca) fondly. Thanks!
"...the perfect combination..."
We had a marvelous trip, and much of it was due to the planning that went into the Girosole itinerary – it was the perfect combination of walking, scenery, history, culture, time spent with the group, and time to explore on our own. I can’t imagine a better way to see the Amalfi coast. Our guide Ulisse was very friendly and helpful – he did a wonderful job of keeping us organized, giving us the history of the area, and providing advice on things to do when we were on our own. We would like to travel again with Girosole (maybe Tuscany next time) and will certainly recommend the walking tours to all of our friends.

Thank you to Nuyama for great organizational skills, prompt responses, sound advice along the way and the perfect for us choices of routes for each day. As we interacted with hosts and fellow hikers it became obvious Nuyama has built solid relationships and is highly respected. We felt confident doing this hike self guided because of our own experience and the support given. Thank you Nuyama! Experience of a lifetime!!
It was a great 5 days walking, and our group of 5 all felt it was a moderate to tough walk at times. Early October – Good time of year to walk 23-25 degrees each day..wonderful towns and villages along the way. Via Francigena was not busy and the terrain was hard on the feet ( some blisters!) at times, so definitely wear good walking shoes.. Take a stick for some of the climbs and surfaces. There are often 2 routes out of the towns and we always took the more scenic route which meant we covered 127km and not the 110k advertised. Signposts were pretty good all the way and we are glad we forwarded our big luggage each day. Overall a great walk ending in historic Rome!. We stayed on for 3 days to see some sights and do some more walking !!.
Fortunate to of experienced 4 or 5 trips with walking women. Love the diversity of trips, the choices, ability to spend time withing the group of extraordinary women or time independently. Nothing is missed, such a treat to have everything planed for you. Would highly recommend to all.
Amazing experience. The Dolomites are special place. Using Dolomite Mountains really takes all of the legwork and uncertainty out of the trip so you can focus on having fun. Probably exchanged two or three emails and before I knew it I was all set to have the trip of a lifetime.
I was looking forward to the experiences/adventures of hiking in the region of the Pre-Alps at the foot of the Dolomites because of how beautiful the area is. It was obvious throughout the tour how much this area means to Piero. The trip far exceeded any expectations. Piero is the consummate guide: knowledgeable, patient, spontaneous, flexible, and more. The pleasure he gains from planning surprises or continually having new ideas to add more interest or fun is indeed a gift to us. Each day was amazing. I not only wholeheartedly recommend Piero’s tour and I’m planning to return in 2024.
I recently did the guided tour of the cinque terre. I don’t often provide feedback but this tour was amazing. You can’t go wrong when you have a back drop of the cinque terre but what made the tour was the very knowledgable guide Stefano. His knowledge of the Cinque Terre walks, history and nature was fantastic, he was always willing to answer our questions. It was great having an Italian guide, not only did we learn about the region but also Italian culture in general. The food and accommodation was also very good.

The Best Walking & Hiking Tours in Italy
Discover italy on an affordable walking holiday.
Italy is home to some of the world's best hiking trails because it has been blessed with a diverse and beautiful landscape.
Italy has such a mix of terrain, from the peaks of the Dolomites , islands of Sardinia , the lakes district near Como, the spectacular coastline paths of Amalfi and Cinque Terre , the other-worldliness of Puglia , and the green heart of Italy in Umbria and Tuscany ; not to mention the allure of the Via Francigena and St Francis Way , otherwise known as Italy's Camino.
However it's not just the land that creates unforgettable walking experiences in Italy. The food and culture is unique to each region of Italy and on a walking tour you will completely immerse yourself within the local way of life.
Here we list the best walking tours in Italy that you can explore on an affordable self guided or small group walking holiday.
Walking in Puglia
Our Walking in Puglia tour is one of our most popular holidays in Italy, and rightly so. If you are unfamiliar with the Italian region of Puglia , in the 'heel' of the country, you will be gobsmacked by the fascinating architecture, history, and culture.
Highlights of Walking in Puglia are being mesmerised by landscapes of red earth, olive groves and vineyards; exploring the maze of narrow streets in the white city of Ostuni; and perhaps best of all, is staying in authentic accommodation with a couple of nights in a typical 'trullo' hotel room. If you'd like to read of more reasons to explore Puglia, see why we think you should take an active holiday in Puglia .
Cinque Terre Walk
Fully absorb the breathtaking scenery of the colourful Cinque Terre townships on this wonderful walking tour. The Cinque Terre Walk is a 7 day self guided walk where you make your own way around the five towns of the Mediterranean coastline. This trip is graded as introductory to moderate, so it is quite accessible and achievable for all levels of fitness.
Highlights of this walking holiday include exploring the charming towns of Corniglia, Vernazza, La Spezia and Riomaggiore. There is ample time for impromptu swim stops in the clear waters and the only reason you'll want to exit the water is to fetch a delicious gelato.
Walking in the Dolomites
Discover the dramatic limestone peaks of the Dolomites on this superb hiking holiday. The Walking in the Dolomites tour is an 8 day self guided journey that explores the striking cliffs and peaks of the Dolomite mountain range. It's not just alpine views however, there are low valleys filled with orchards, vineyards and fields to admire as well.
Highlights of this hike include seeing the Tre Cime mountain group, which is a famous block of three vertical sided, finger like towers; viewing the high cliffs of the Tofana, Sella and Marmolada massifs; and celebrating each days' rewarding walk with the local food and drink in the alpine restaurants.
Lake Como Walk
The Lake Como Walk tour is a centre based experience, meaning you only have to unpack once as you explore walking trails of the surrounding area. In this case, you stay in the delightful town of Menaggio which sits alongside Lake Como. From here, you can explore the various beautiful gardens and estates that the Como lakes are famous for, such as Villa Carlotta and Villa Melzi.
Highlights of this gentle self guided walking holiday is taking the ferry that crosses Lake Como to Bellagio and Varenna, walking to the Church of Saint Lucio that sits on the border of Italy and Switzerland, and perhaps spotting a celebrity like George Clooney as they (and you!) relax in the peaceful setting.
Via Francigena: Italy's Camino Pilgrimage
The Via Francigena is Italy's version of Spain's world famous Camino de Santiago . This pilgrimage trail begins high in the Swiss Alps, from the Great St Bernard Pass, and ends in the Eternal City of Rome. The full Via Francigena takes 50 days to complete and is truly a once in a lifetime achievement. UTracks have also segmented the Via Francigena into more achievable sections so you can experience this great trail without time constraints.
The most popular stretch is from Orvieto to Rome , which is a 10 day stage that rewards walkers with the historical end point in Rome. Or you can walk the Best of Tuscany which showcase the highlights of one of Italy's most classic regions. There are two options for a guided walking tour of the Via Francigena, with the 13 day ' Best of the Via Francigena ' trip, and the ' Food Lover's Via Francigena ' tour that pairs great walking with fine food and wine.
Rome and the Amalfi Coast on Foot

It's a perfect introduction to the region for people who love medieval villages, hilltop towns, fine wine, food and vineyards. There's also opportunity to visit the Renaissance city of Pienza, which is beautiful.
A Saunter in Sardinia
Visit the Italian island of Sardinia and you won't be disappointed. It's an inspiring island that's full of natural beauty. While on the fun walking tour, A Saunter in Sardinia , you'll spot white sand beaches, ancient Roman ruins, the Vernaccia vineyards and an abundance of bird life with large colonies of pink flamingoes and grey herons.
Hear how another hiker reviewed the trip: "If you want to get away from typical tourist trails and enjoy hiking this is an ideal trip. The walk takes you from the beautiful mountain area of Santu Lussurgiu (where the accommodation has a Michelin plate restaurant) down to the western coast of Sardinia and its stunning cliffs. The accommodation was perfect and there was the opportunity to dine on delicious Italian fare in each town. I would do the same trip again!"
St Francis Way: Italian Camino
The St Francis Way is a Camino pilgrimage route inspired by the life of St Francis of Assisi. It connects the historic cities of Florence and Rome by way of an ancient Roman road, and the route showcases the picturesque beauty of Tuscany and Umbria . Think forests, olive groves and orchards sprinkled with churches and tiny cobble-stone villages.
The St Francis Way is broken into several stages that are ably walked. The route beings in the town of Chiusi and continues until you reach the Eternal City of Rome. There are various 7 day walking stages between, and all of them are self guided allowing for great flexibility while walking.

Italy walking tours
Small group walking tours to italy.
Italy is known for its unparalleled mix of wonderful landscapes, rich cultural history, fabulous food and wine and of course for its friendly and outgoing people. In the north, the Italian Alps are every bit as magnificent as their French, Swiss and Austrian counterparts, with year-round snow covering and impressive glaciers running off their flanks. Treks in the Mont Blanc (or in Italian ‘Monte Bianco’) region usually include days in Italy as well as France and Switzerland. If you’re looking for challenging treks in the high mountains there are numerous choices in the Italian Alps, including the spectacular, pale silver Dolomites in the north-east. Famous for their craggy limestone cliffs and spires, which make them arguably the most spectacular string of mountain peaks in Europe, the Dolomites attract walkers, trekkers and climbers from all over the world.

Best hikes in Italy
The Amalfi Coast On Italy’s celebrated Amalfi Coast , just south of Naples and the looming presence of Mount Vesuvius, you can walk through some of the most sublime coastal landscapes anywhere in the Mediterranean. With its near vertical cliffs, neatly terraced slopes, and picturesque villages impossibly located on the ridges and folds of the hills, the Amalfi Coast is superb for hiking. You can explore a network of ancient paths and stairways criss-crossing this landscape from village to village, through vineyards, lemon orchards and chestnut groves. Amongst these classic walks the renowned ‘Path of the Gods’, with its breathtaking views over the whole Sorrento peninsula, has been called one of the most picturesque hiking trails in the whole of Italy.
Tuscany One of Italy’s finest regions for walking and trekking is Tuscany , whose open landscapes, gently undulating hills, Renaissance cities and impossibly beautiful medieval hill-top villages are famous the world over. In the less-visited hills of northern Tuscany lies a hidden gem, the Garfagnana Valley, whose green meadows, forested hills and undiscovered villages offer some of the best hiking in the region. From here you can walk up onto the high ridges and peaks of the Apennines and the Alpi Apuane, with quite breathtaking views out across the patchwork of fields and forest lying below. Further south in Tuscany there are beautiful walks through the classic rolling hills and vineyards of the Chianti region, along cypress lined avenues with centuries-old farmsteads and villages perched on the surrounding hills.
Sicily The focus for most walkers and trekkers in Sicily are the volcanoes. However there is so much else to enjoy too, including the rich history, the food and wine, the traditional and largely unspoilt towns and villages and the Sicilian people themselves: warm, outgoing and welcoming. You can hike up Mount Etna , Europe’s highest volcano at 3330 metres, following little known trails to avoid the sightseeing crowds. You can also climb Vulcano, with its beautiful views across the Tyrrhenian Sea, and Stromboli - one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Stromboli is one of the very few places on earth where you can see live eruptions in relative safety. You will be accompanied by a specialist guide.

The food in this region is a mixture of Austrian, German and Italian influences; which is common in many areas of the Dolomites.

We begin today with a buffet breakfast spread at our hotel before taking a short, private transfer to the starting trailhead for today’s hike. Our hike takes us to the top of an amazing mountain pass. After skirting beneath the towering limestone cliffs of Averau, we will stop and have lunch at the Averau Refuge surrounded by stunning views of the Italian Dolomites. Refueled from lunch, we continue down to another refuge, Scoiattoli. This stretch of our hike is directly across from the stone towers of Tofane and the world famous Cinque Torri. Climbers from around the globe travel to these towering pillars, and you will see why – they are dramatic, sheer and awe-inspiring. We will visit several fascinating World War II relics, including mountain bunkers and defensive outposts, which for many guests is an unexpected highlight. After soaking in the views and learning about the region’s fascinating history, we’ll descend towards civilization and catch a short transfer back to our accommodations. We’ll have time to relax before dinner at our hotel, with the breathtaking Alps as our backdrop.

- Elevation Gain: 1330 ft (405 m)
- Elevation Loss: 3050 ft (930 m)

We start Day 3 starts with another European buffet breakfast spread at our hotel, and another short transfer. Today’s hike begins from the road at Giau Pass. Along the way we’ll cross over 3 small passes on our way to a high plateau with an alpine pasture and stunning views. Dropping down to the picturesque high elevation Federa Lake, we’ll relax over a delicious trail lunch. Our descent is along a beautiful forested path, crossing a river along the way. Once back at our accommodations we’ll have time to relax. Tonight’s meal is planned at a fabulous hand-picked restaurant in the charming mountain town of Cortina d’Ampezzo.
- Hiking Distance: 6.5 mi (10.5 km)
- Elevation Loss: 2067 ft (630 m)

On today’s hike we explore the opposite side of the mountain valley from Cinque Torre. We follow a traversing route along the southern face of the Tofane di Rozes, one of the Dolomite’s most dramatic cirques. Our sweeping views are of the areas we have explored over the last two days, giving us a wonderful vantage point to appreciate all we’ve accomplished thus far. Our path eventually takes us to the Dibona Refuge, where we’ll sit down for a refreshing trail lunch. After lunch we’ll descend back to Pocol along a beautiful, forested path.

This morning we will pack up our bags after breakfast and transfer via a private bus up to the Auronzo Refuge. From here we start today’s hike, which is a memorable one indeed. We hike over the pass of Forcella de Mezzo to the North face of the famous Tre Cime, a towering, dramatic peak. This is the most famous mountain in all of the Dolomites, and our backdrop for the next few days of hiking. We continue on to the pass of Forcellina and its neighboring, stunning alpine lakes. Our hike ends with a descent through the picturesque Rinbon and Rinbianco valleys back to our hotel and awaiting luggage for a much-deserved dinner and relaxing evening.

A few of these highlights include Lago di Cengia, the pass of Büllelejoch, and the Lakes dei Piani. We finish up our hike going up and over the Laveredo Pass down to our starting point. A local public bus will transfer us back to our hotel for one last relaxing night and celebratory dinner with Lake Misurina as our backdrop.

Our last day of the Italian Dolomites Lodge-based Tour gives us one more impressive half-day hike into the Popéna Valley. This quaint, remote valley just behind Lake Misurina allows us one last look at the surrounding beauty of the Dolomites. After returning to our hotel we will take a private vehicle transfer to the Venice Airport, then Mestre Train Station. Flights should be planned for a 6pm departure or later. What a week it’s been!
Please Note : We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however occasionally trips are subject to itinerary changes based on a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to: lodging/campground availability, extreme weather, political or bureaucratic obstacles, earthquakes, fires, flooding and more. Meals: What to Expect
This Alps hiking tour features a combination of in-town meals and meals prepared by your guide. Most lunches are prepared on the trail by your guides. Italian meals with Austrian and German influences will be had in our hotels and nearby towns! Bread, grains, pastas, rice, polenta, local cheese, and pork products are all staples in this region.

We can often accommodate vegan, vegetarian, kosher and non-gluten diets and make adjustments for food allergies. These and other special dietary requests may require an additional fee, and in some destinations may be more difficult to accommodate than others. Safety Precautions
Your safety is our top priority. Our hiking tours are led by professional hiking guides, all of whom are wilderness-certified first responders or EMT’s, each with years of guiding and wilderness experience. Guides adhere to standardized risk management protocols in case of any potential or actual incident, and all tours carry an emergency communication device and comprehensive first-aid kit. Additionally we have a “24/7” system through which guides or guests can reach Wildland support personnel at any time.
In the interest of your safety, it’s important to refer to the Center for Disease Control website for up-to-date recommendations on immunizations before your trip.
Essential Eligibility Criteria
Essential Eligibility Criteria (“EEC”) have been specifically identified to help you understand the skills and abilities necessary to participate on each Wildland trip, and they apply uniformly to all potential trip participants, irrespective of the presence or absence of any disability.
Once you identify a trip in which you may be interested, please carefully review the EEC and itinerary details. If after reviewing the EEC that apply to your desired trip, you determine you need an accommodation in order to meet the EEC, please contact us prior to registering to discuss your requested accommodation.
The EEC exist for your own safety and the safety and enjoyment of all participants. If you are unable to meet the EEC for the trip, with or without an accommodation, you are not eligible for that trip. If you register and arrive for a trip for which you do not meet the EEC, you will be disqualified from participation on the trip and will be dismissed or evacuated from the trip without a refund.
Our approach to international travel is to combine the best of two worlds: the dialed-in details, professionalism and consistency Wildland trips are known for; and the cultural immersion and intimate regional knowledge that only locals can provide. To excel with this approach, we vet and hire the best local guides, welcome them into the Wildland family and train them to meet our standard of excellence with every aspect of a trip. But along with managing logistics and safety, your guides will teach you about the area’s history and culture, and provide a level of familiarity and intimate detail only locals can.
Check out our Meet Our Team page for staff bios.

Trip Insurance Requirements
Field evacuation, repatriation, and medical insurance is required on all Alps trips as a condition of partnership terms with our European vendors (field evacuation and repatriation minimum coverage is a combined $200,000 USD).
If you need to purchase field evacuation, repatriation, or medical insurance we recommend IMG/iTravelinsured. They are one of the world’s leading providers of travel insurance and policies meet all Alps requirements.
For information on the recommended IMG/iTravelinsured policies please click here .

Weather in the Alps
The location of the Alps and their tremendous elevation variations lead to significant and sometimes unpredictable temperatures and weather patterns, both in different ranges and in a particular range itself. Due to the Alps’ location in central Europe, they are influenced by moist air off the Atlantic, cold polar air from northern Europe, fluctuating air masses; and warm Mediterranean air flows northward.
Due to these extraordinary forces acting on the Alps’ weather, we recommend following our clothing list closely (in your trip packet when you register), as guests are best served by being prepared for a broad range of possible temperatures and weather conditions.
The average temperatures and precipitation in Alps are:

I had the best time on this trip.
This was an incredible trip! Everything was so well-planned and organized. I love Wildland trips because I’m able to relax and enjoy the best hikes, delicious food & great company knowing our guides will keep us all safe & having fun. Matthieu & Willy were excellent guides & are really fun to travel with. They accommodated everyone in our group on the hikes by occasionally splitting us into two groups and giving us the option to choose the level of difficulty we felt like taking on that day. The more challenging routes were so much fun and when we got to places on the trail that were narrow and steep with loose rocks that I would have been nervous to take on my own, Matthieu & Willy’s instruction along with their calm confidence took away my fear. Our meals together both in the restaurants & our mountain picnics were all so fun and delicious! Some other highlights were our clean, comfortable hotels and transportation, the dinner in Cortina d’Ampezzo with time to walk around & explore the town, the paddle boats on Lake Misurina, the beautiful sound of cowbells we sometimes encountered on the hikes, and of course our wonderful group! I made great new friends & had so many interesting, fun conversations with the amazing people in our group. I highly recommend traveling with Wildland, this trip in particular & definitely these guides. They make sure you see all of the best views, accomplish the most challenging, fun hikes, experience the food & culture and stay safe, comfortable, smiling & laughing the whole time!
Still savoring the trip
This was my 6th trip with Wildland. It again exceeded my expectations. The itenerary was well thought out. The food was beyond delicious. I cannot say enough wonderful things about my guides. Not only were they very nice people, I felt their attention to safety and group cohesiveness was excellent. I never worried about any details, they had it all under control. There were some very challenging hikes and they were always encouraging and helped us when needed. I cannot find anything that needed to be improved. I am still savoring the trip and almost ready to start planning the next one.
I can't wait to do my next adventure with Wildland!
I did this as a gift for my mom's 70th birthday...I couldn't think of a better way to spend time with her. The guides made this trip. Having two guides allowed for more aggressive and more leisurely, but challenging, route options to accommodate all parties. Matthew and Wilfred our guides could not be better ambassadors for Wildland - both technically and as awesome human beings. They made sure my mom was safe but challenged her to do things she didn't think she could do #gratitude. Because the trip was so well organized it felt like 2 weeks but was only 5 days - I never once had to think about anything logistically - they took care of everything. I can't wait to do my next adventure with Wildland!

Trip Highlights :
See the breathtaking spires of the alta badia., explore the fabled tyrolean culture and cuisine., stay in world-class inns built in the 14th century..
Towers of vertical limestone, tinged pink in the evening light, loom above the rolling green meadows and intriguing castles, ruins and onion-domed church steeples of the Alto Adige region in northern Italy. This may be the most beautiful mountain region on earth; regularly attracting photographers and mountain enthusiasts enamored of the incredible light and topography of the range.
The Dolomites are culturally diverse, and this trip visits the German speaking Tyrolean villages of the Val Gardena , the Ladin speaking center of Corvara in the Alte Badia and the chic Italian speaking center of Cortina D’Ampezzo , a long-time destination for members of the jet set crowd.
Drink tall weizen beers and nibble on homemade apfelstrudel in Völs Am Schlern, a cobblestoned village beneath the Sciliar, an impressive rampart of limestone. Climb onto the Alpe di Siusi , the largest “alp” in the Alps, with views that extend across the Ortler, Stubaier and Zillertaler Alps of Austria to the north. Spend one night in a comfortable rifugio above tree line, sipping wine and marveling at the unwavering stamina of the innkeeper’s espresso machine. Hike through the Rosengarten, Sassolungo, Puez and Tofane ranges; the most striking and vertical-looking mountains in the Dolomites.
From our fabulous inns, including one immured in a fourteenth century edifice, and others known for their haute cuisine and charm, you’ll enjoy the most fabled scenery and classic hiking of the Dolomites.

Trip Itinerary
Day 1 - travel to bolzano.
Travel independently to Bolzano. We will arrange a taxi to pick you up and transfer you to Völs. Overnight in a beautiful five-star hotel situated in the heart of this Southern Tyrolean village.
Day 2 - Völs
Today we embark on a gentle warm up hike through a world of perfectly manicured Tyrolean chalets, rolling fields and pine forests. From Völs, ascend to Tuffalm, a picturesque alp offering views across northern Italy and the entire south Tyrol. Continue to Hofalm, a Tyrolean farmhouse with dirndle-clad women serving tall weizen beers and apfelstrudel. Enjoy views of the Sciliar, an imposing rampart of limestone, before looping back to Völs.
Distance: 6 miles. Elevation gain/loss: 1750 ft.
Day 3 - Völs to Rifugio Alpe di Tires
Today’s hike begins in the Alpe di Siusi, the largest meadow, or alp, in the Alps. Views extend to the Austrian Alps to the north and to the region’s dominant peaks, the Sassopiatto, Sassolungo and today’s objective, the Sciliar. Snap photos in front of the Sciliar, then sample more strudel and hot coffee at yet another Tyrolean hut. Have lunch at the Rifugio Bolzano (9,006 feet), an atmospheric restaurant that feels more like a lively beer hall than a climber’s hut. Traverse to the Rifugio Alpe di Tires, a well-stocked hut with wine, beer and a commercial grade espresso machine. No luggage access tonight.
Distance: 8 miles. Elevation gain/loss (with gondola and lift): 2600/1300 ft.
Day 4 - Rifugio Alpe di Tires to Sëlva
Beginning with a traverse beneath the Denti di Terrarossi, while enjoying expansive views over the Alpe di Siusi as we head toward the Sassopiatto and Sassolungo. Our route travels directly between the two peaks to a high saddle with a dramatically situated cable car. Alternatively, we may hike beneath the Sassopiatto. Both routes descend to the Forcella Sassolungo for transport to the village of Sëlva in Gardena and a welcoming three-star inn.
Distance: 7 miles. Elevation gain/loss: 3000 ft.
Day 5 - Sëlva to Corvara
Ascending a pristine glacial valley surrounded by towering limestone walls, we climb through larch and stone pine toward the Rifugio Puez before descending to the village of Corvara in the Alta Badia, a valley where the Ladin culture dominates. Overnight in one of our favorite four-star hotels, filled with Tyrolean charm and offering superb cuisine.
Distance: 9 miles. Elevation gain/loss: 3100/3300 ft.
Day 6 - Corvara Hike
There are many options for hiking in Corvara. From exploring the ski resort right behind the hotel; to ascending to a ridge separating the Puez and Sella groups and the Marmolada, the second highest peak in Italy at 3,259 meters, to the west, with the Tofane and Della Croce groups to the east. Your guide(s) will choose an appropriate outing for the group.
Distance and elevation gain/loss are variable.
Day 7 - Corvara to Cortina
A quick shuttle delivers us to Lagazuoi. During the First World War, Austrians and Italians dug a network of tunnels beneath Mount Lagazuoi. We walk through some of these restored tunnels as we enter a stunning world of rock, and the heart of the Tofane Range. Ascend gradually to a beautiful vantage point before descending the beautiful and lush Val Travenanzes. Transfer to the alpine center of Cortina D’Ampezzo and the comforts of our four-star hotel.
Distance: 5 miles. Elevation gain/loss: 200/2400 ft.
Day 8 - Depart
Buses from Cortina connect to the main train lines towards Venice and Milan, or to the north in the direction of Munich.

New 7-Day Hiking Trail Opens In Italy's Breathtaking Dolomites
The Dolomites in Italy are a popular destination for outdoor lovers and hikers and now a trail has been added to the vast network.
Faith Katunga • Jun 10, 2024
The Dolomites in Italy are a popular destination for outdoor lovers and hikers. Now, a trail has been added to the vast network that will draw in adventurers with more beautiful scenery and fascinating history. The recently inaugurated Cammino Retico is a 170-kilometer circular route that can be completed in seven days. Initiated by the social association Carpe Diem, the trail takes hikers deep into one of Italy’s most beautiful mountain ranges .
The Cammino Retico connects various remote villages between the Veneto and Trentino regions . Named after the ancient Raeti people who inhabited the area in pre-Roman times, it allows hikers to explore lesser-known territories at risk of depopulation. The trail starts and ends in Aune di Sovramonte, near the city of Belluno. It traverses 10 municipalities in the Tesino and Feltrino areas.
Sustainable and Slow Tourism
Promoting sustainable tourism, the Cammino Retico encourages visitors to explore Italy’s “uncontaminated” and less crowded parts. Hikers can spend each night in mountain settlements as they travel through green valleys, placid lake coastlines, and rocky limestone peaks. Accommodations range from the walled town of Feltre to the lakeside village of Arsiè. Moreover, there are over 50 options already available along the route.
One of the unique aspects of the Cammino Retico is its mix of natural beauty and historical significance. The trail passes by various sites of interest, such as Monte Avena, where traces of Neanderthal populations have been discovered. Hikers will also encounter the 12th-century Sanctuary of Saints Vittore and Corona, adorned with rich frescoes, and the elegant 17th-century Villa delle Centenere. Along the way, the Pedavena Brewery and the bicycle museum in Cesiomaggiore are also highlights.
Depending on where you start along the Cammino Retico, you can expect an elevation change of 400–1,450 meters. Climbers can enjoy stunning views from a variety of vantage points at such altitudes. Inspired by the popular Camino de Santiago, the Carpe Diem association plans to introduce a traveler’s passport and diploma for those who complete the circuit. Additionally, starting in 2025, a twin route for cyclists will be available, making the trail accessible to a broader range of outdoor enthusiasts.
Discover More
Numerous other trails and hiking experiences are available for those looking to explore the Dolomites further. Popular hikes in the region include the Seceda Ridgeline, Adolf Munkel Trail, and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo Circuit. Each trail delivers distinct challenges and breathtaking views, making the Dolomites a must-visit destination for any hiking enthusiast.

Italy Travel Guide
Last Updated: June 3, 2024
Italy is one of Europe’s most iconic and popular destinations. Home to incredible food, fabulous wine, tons of ancient ruins, undying romance, and picturesque landscapes, it should come as no surprise that this is one of the most sought-after travel destinations in the world.
I’ve been visiting since 2006 and I never tire of it.
The vineyards in Tuscany, history in Florence , ancient streets of Rome , gorgeous views and hills Cinque Terre , romantic canals in Venice — I love it all.
Italy is best experienced slowly so pace yourself. Soak in the atmosphere and way of life as you explore. Italians move slowly and enjoy la dolce vita and so should you! Relax, take in the scenery, enjoy a cappuccino or a glass of wine. The slower you go, the better you’ll be able to appreciate the charms and nuance of this iconic southern European gem.
This travel guide to Italy can help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your time here.

Top 5 things to see and do in italy.
1. Explore Venice
While crowded, Venice is an astounding place to visit. I love the city’s iconic architecture and picturesque canals. Don’t miss the Piazza San Marco, Doge’s Palace, Rialto Bridge, the Basilica San Marco, and the city’s countless museums. Moreover, be sure to head to the old Jewish Ghetto for hip bars and cheap drinks (the English word ghetto comes from this area of Venice). Venice is also home to several world-class festivals. In late winter, the epic Carnival takes place here and, in August, the prestigious Venice Film Festival takes over the nearby island of Lido. If you have time, be sure to explore the neighboring islands on a day tour. They are charming in their own right.
2. Wander Rome
Rome has so much to see and do that you’ll need to make several trips to even scratch the surface. Besides obvious highlights like the Colosseum, Forum, Palatine Hill, and Trevi Fountain, make sure you explore the Trastevere neighborhood. It’s my favorite area in Rome and feels almost like a village inside a big city. Trastevere offers delicious food, funky bars, and ancient winding streets. I love the family pizzerias and cafes here for people-watching and the gelato. Vatican City, the smallest independent city-state in the world, is nestled within the heart of Rome and is home to the Pope, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and many fantastic museums. You can fill an endless amount of time here so don’t try to rush your visit!
3. Tour Pompeii
Located a 20-40-minute train ride from Naples , Pompeii is an ancient city that was destroyed by a volcano, preserving it in a blanket of ash still frozen in time. Walk around the Roman city as it stood the day that Mount Vesuvius exploded in 79 CE, moving in and out of homes, villas, baths, and businesses where pots and vases still lay. What really struck me was entering the houses and seeing that the fountains and most of the beautiful frescoes are still intact. Admission is 22 EUR while a guided tour with a professional archeologist is 55 EUR. It’s a huge site and will take a full day to visit in depth.
4. Hike the Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre consists of five colorful coastal villages on the west coast of Italy, backed by steep vineyards and mountains. These small towns are by no means undiscovered by tourists but still absolutely beautiful and teeming with great shops and cafes. Each village has its own unique charm and personality so be sure to visit all of them. I absolutely love the fun hikes in the stunning hills high above the sea between the villages that range in difficulty. The Cinque Terre express train makes it super easy to pop around to the different villages if you don’t want to hike between the towns. Trail #7 is my favorite.
5. Relax on the Amalfi Coast
Other things to see and do in italy, 1. party at the venice carnival.
Carnival is ten days of masquerade madness every February leading up to Mardi Gras. The tradition goes back centuries, starting in the 12th century and reaching the height of popularity in the 18th century. Today, it’s one of the biggest festivals in Italy, with millions of people attending every year. Though it’s too crowded for my taste, the iconic and diverse masks are a central part of the festivities and every year there is a contest for the most beautiful mask. If you want to splash out, you can even attend a traditional masquerade ball! Just be sure to book your accommodation early as the city fills up months in advance.
2. Explore Milan
Milan is the fashion capital of Italy. Spend some time taking in the glamor but don’t spend more than a day or two here unless you’re looking to splash out. While you’re here, don’t miss the beautiful Milan Cathedral, which boasts 3,500 statues, 135 spires, and five bronze doors. Sforzesco Castle, a 15th-century castle that houses Michelangelo’s last sculpture, is also worth a visit. There’s also Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper , located inside Santa Maria delle Grazie church (which is itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site) as well as Leonardo’s Horse, one of the largest equine statues in the world. To get away from the crowds, spend some time relaxing in Parco Sempione, Milan’s most famous city park. It’s a vast oasis of green space and perfect for a picnic when the weather is nice.
3. See the Leaning Tower in Pisa
The entire city of Pisa is focused on taking photos of this famed tower. Started in 1173 and finished in 1399, it’s the bell tower of Pisa’s cathedral, located next door. Although it was meant to be perfectly vertical, the tower started leaning during construction due to the weight of the building on an unstable foundation. Most people come for the tower, but I find the entire complex to be stunning! The white marble buildings of the Baptistry and the Duomo are equally impressive but don’t get the same attention as the tower. They’re worth a visit. Admission to the top is 20 EUR or 27 EUR for a ticket that includes all the monuments in the complex. DiscoveryPisa runs a guided tour of all three sites for 40 EUR if you want a more in-depth experience.
4. Visit Siena
Everyone who visits Siena walks away loving it. Located in Tuscany, it’s one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Italy and boasts a labyrinth of lanes gathered around the arena of Piazza del Campo. Spend a few days admiring this charming city and exploring one of Italy’s most popular and famous regions. The main draw to the city is the stunning Siena Cathedral, which was constructed with white and black marble and is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the country (the interior is massive and ornately decorated and lined by huge columns). Be sure to also visit the Torre del Mangia, a narrow 14th-century tower that offers stunning views of the area, as well as the 14th-century Fonte Gaia fountain, which is decorated by centuries-old marble panels.
5. Wander Naples
Naples , made famous as the birthplace of pizza, is a gritty city home to a wealth of historical treasures. There’s the medieval Naples Cathedral, the 18th-century Villa Comunale Park, and nearby Naples , Pompeii , one of the most amazing and important sites to visit in the country. The Archaeological Museum of Naples is also worth a visit, and if you enjoy hiking you can climb up the iconic Mount Vesuvius. Naples is the gateway to the south so you’re very likely to come here if you’re crisscrossing the country. Its location near Pompeii, Capri, and Sorrento makes it the perfect starting point for exploring the region. Best of all, it’s a foodie city like no other; I ate my weight in pizza during my visit!
6. Explore Florence
There’s no real need to explain why one should visit Florence — the city speaks for itself. Everything people say about it is true: great food, amazing museums, ancient buildings, small streets, awesome gelato. The city has it all. Be sure to visit The Uffizi, which holds the world’s most important collection of Renaissance art (including the The Birth of Venus and La Primavera by Botticelli, Bacchus by Caravaggio, and Doni Tondo by Michelangelo). The famous David statue is also in Florence, housed in the Galleria dell’Accademia. It’s one of the most impressive sculptures in the world and at 5.17 meters (17 feet) tall, it’s a lot bigger and more detailed than you think it would be! While here, make sure you take a few wine tours throughout the region to get a feel for the verdant countryside. Don’t miss the view from the highest point in the Piazzale Michelangelo. It was my favorite and well worth the hike to get there.
7. Drive around “the Heel”
Few travelers ever visit the southern heel of the Italian “boot.” But, if you have time, it’s worth the trip. This is where most of the fruits and vegetables in Italy come from so a trip down here will give you the best glimpse into rustic Italian life far from the maddening crowds of Rome and Italy’s other tourist hotspots. Don’t miss the picturesque Polignano a Mare, with its rugged cliffs and white-washed houses. Gallipoli, with its labyrinth of narrow lanes and historic port, is also worth visiting. There are tons of amazing beaches in this part of the country too, including Marina di Pescoluse (Salento), Cala Porto (Polignano a Mare), and Torre Guaceto (Brindisi).
8. Eat your way around Sicily
There’s Italian culture and then there’s Sicily. Sicily has its own unique cooking style, traditions, and customs. It’s unlike the rest of Italy. Be sure to spend some time in Taormina and Palermo (the capital of Sicily). The UNESCO Valley of the Temples is also in Sicily, a national park home to incredible Greek ruins that are over 2,000 years old. Don’t miss the stunning Mount Etna , an active volcano that you can ski on it in the winter or take a tour of the top in the summer.
9. Stroll through Sorrento
Sorrento is a small city in southwestern Italy surrounded by a dreamy landscape of rolling hills, deep valleys, and the Lattari Mountains. There’s not a lot to do in the town itself but Sorrento makes an ideal starting point for numerous excursions to nearby cities and islands around the famous Amalfi Coast, like Capri and Ischia. I especially love driving along the winding coastal roads overlooking the sea. Don’t miss a visit to the nearby Blue Grotto .
10. Attend Settimana Santa (Holy Week)
This is the last week of Lent, known as Holy Week. During this time, there are several processions throughout Italy, drawing crowds of thousands. Throughout the week, there are various gatherings in Puglia, Abruzzo, and Sicily but the major event occurs on Easter Sunday and is led by the Pope himself. It’s an amazing time to visit, but expect huge crowds and for accommodation to sell out months in advance.
11. Visit Alberobello
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is an interesting and picturesque little town just south of Bari (a port city on the Adriatic Sea) known for its unusual white cone-shaped houses (they’re super peculiar). It’s well worth a visit between the months of November and April (to avoid the flocks of tourists) as there are a couple of museums to peruse, in addition to some great restaurants, bars, and markets.
12. Tour the Vatican Museums
Founded in the early 16th century, it is a complex of museums spanning over 12 acres. There are so many priceless highlights, including Michelangelo’s works in the Sistine Chapel. You could easily spend hours here so don’t rush your visit. Consider getting a guide to make the museum come to life and give you some context and history of what you are seeing. Admission is 20 EUR and skip-the-line guided tours with Get Your Guide start around 40 EUR.
13. See Chiesa di Sant’Efisio
When you find yourself in Cagliari on Sardinia, wander over to the Stampace quarter to see this church. Dedicated to the patron Saint Ephisius, this is the most important church in the city. The original building dates to the 13th century, though it was rebuilt and expanded in the 16th century and then again in the 18th century, this time in the Baroque style. Admission is free.
14. Take a cooking class
Italy is a dream destination for foodies and the best way to learn about this amazing cuisine is to take a cooking class . You’ll get to visit a local market, learn about the history of some of the country’s best dishes, and then learn how to make them yourself so you can impress friends and family back home. You can find cooking classes all over the country. They are very common. Prices vary depending on what city you take a class in, but most cost at least 40 EUR and last a few hours.
15. Take a walking tour
Walks of Italy offers incredible, detailed tours all around the country. They are my favorite tour company in the country. And they are relatively inexpensive and you definitely get your money’s worth. If you are big into history, culture, or architecture these tours are for you. You’ll walk away with a much richer understanding of the country. Don’t miss them.

Italy Travel Costs
Hostel prices – Hostel dorms average 30-70 EUR per night for rooms with 6-8 beds. Private rooms are usually between 100-140 EUR per night. Free Wi-Fi is standard and most hostels also have self-catering facilities and include breakfast. During the summer months, expect prices to double. In Rome and Florence, prices throughout the year are about 20% higher than anywhere else.
For those traveling with a tent, campgrounds are available around the country, usually costing between 15-40 EUR per night for a basic plot for two people.
Budget hotel prices – A night in a two-star budget hotel ranges between 70-125 EUR per night. Expect basic amenities like free Wi-Fi, TV, AC, and occasionally free breakfast. Prices are on the higher end in cities like Rome and Venice and also double during the summer.
On Airbnb, private rooms start around 45-90 EUR, while entire apartments usually start around 70-150 EUR. Expect prices on the higher end in hotspots like Rome and Venice. Prices can also double (or triple) when not booked in advance. Additionally, expect even higher prices in the busy summer months.
Food – Italian cuisine is beloved around the world, though every region in Italy offers its own distinct flavor. Tomatoes, pasta, olives, and olive oil form the backbone of most dishes, with meat, fish and various cheeses rounding out the menu. Gelato and pizza, of course, are also super popular. Some traditional dishes include bigoli in salsa (pasta in anchovy sauce), risotto al nero di seppia (risotto with cuttlefish ink), gnocchi alla Sorrentina (potato gnocchi), cassoeula (a meat and cabbage stew), and tagliatelle funghi porcini e tartufo (pasta with mushrooms and truffles).
A casual restaurant meal of pizza or pasta usually costs 15-25 EUR. In tourist hot spots, add 5-10 EUR to that.
Quick eats like pizza by the slice, paninis, and light snacks cost between 3-8 EUR. Snacks like croissants are less than 2 EUR.
Fast food (think McDonald’s) costs around 10-12 EUR for a combo meal while Chinese, Thai, or Indian food is 10-12 EUR for a main dish. Dessert is usually around 4-8 EUR for something like tiramisu.
Your average restaurant meal costs around 30 EUR with a drink. Most main dishes cost around 15-20 EUR while a pizza is around 10-15 EUR. For higher-end meals, expect to spend about 70 EUR for a three-course meal with a drink.
Beer costs around 4-5 EUR while a glass of wine costs 4-8 EUR. For non-alcoholic drinks, a latte or cappuccino is around 1.50 EUR and bottled water is 1 EUR.
If you plan on cooking your own groceries, expect to spend 50-65 EUR per week. This gets you basic staples like pasta, rice, seasonal produce, and some meat or fish.
Backpacking Italy Suggested Budgets
If you’re backpacking Italy, my suggested budget is 65 EUR per day. This assumes you’re staying in a hostel, cooking all your meals, limiting your drinking, taking public transportation to get around, and sticking to mostly free activities like hiking, free walking tours, and the beaches. If you plan on drinking a lot, add at least 15 EUR to your daily budget.
On a mid-range budget of 140 EUR per day, you can stay in an Airbnb or budget hotel, eat out for a couple of meals, enjoy a few drinks, take the occasional taxi, and do more paid activities like touring the Colosseum or exploring Pompeii.
On an upscale budget of 255 EUR or more per day, you can stay in a budget hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink as much as you want, rent a car, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This isn’t a real luxury budget but it’s a budget that affords you the ability to do anything you want. If you want real luxury, you’ll need to read a different blog for that!
Italy Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips
Italy is one of the most expensive Eurozone countries. It’s very easy to break the bank in Italy, owing to all the historic sites, expensive accommodation, and delicious but pricey restaurants. You’re going to be spending a lot on a visit here. However, there are still lots of ways to reduce your expenses. Here are some tips to help you save money in Italy:
- Skip the bread – Many restaurants offer you bread when you sit down — but they don’t mention that it’s not free. If you’re on a budget, decline the bread and save a few Euros each dining experience.
- Picnic – Head to the store or one of the many markets in the country and grab food for a picnic. It’s cheaper than eating out and you can lounge in one of the many parks to watch the day go by. Food markets are a good place to try things, get fresh cheese and cold cuts, pasta, and snacks like ‘arancini,’ a super-filling rice ball stuffed with meat or cheese.
- Drink the tap water – When out at a restaurant, ask for tap water or you will automatically get expensive bottled water included on your bill. Since the tap water is safe to drink, bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.
- Buy wine at the store – You can buy a great bottle of wine for 6-10 EUR at the store. It’s a lot cheaper than drinking at the bar. Take it outdoors and sit around and enjoy the day/evening or skip expensive nightlife and go out for a long dinner and just drink it at the hostel. Just make sure you have a travel corkscrew on you if you’re going to sit outside somewhere!
- Take the bus – Budget bus companies like Flixbus can take you across the country for cheap. It isn’t glamorous, but with tickets starting at 6 EUR you really can’t complain! (And it’s cheaper than the train.) Taking the bus in town inside big cities instead of taking taxis everywhere or renting a car will save you lots of money.
- Redeem hotel points – If you sign up for hotel credit cards, you can use those points when you travel. It’s always nice to have free accommodations and most cards offer at least 1-2 nights free when you sign up, which can save you a lot. Use this post can to get started with the basics so you can start earning points now and have some built up for your trip.
- Take a free walking tour – Most cities in Italy offer free walking tours that cover all the main highlights. It’s the best budget-friendly way to explore and also a great way to meet other travelers if you’re alone. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end!
- Stay with a local – Accommodation is expensive in Italy, even in the hostels. Use Couchsurfing to stay with locals who have extra beds or couches for free. It’s the best way to save money and meet people. Just be sure to send your requests early (especially in the summer). Also, it’s a good idea to research the area you’re staying in first so you’re not so far away from the city center (or city!) that you need to spend a lot of time/money getting into town to see the sites.
- Get a city tourist card – Many tourism offices offer tourist cards that provide free or discounted entry to the main attractions. Some even include restaurant discounts and free transportation. If you plan on sightseeing a lot, these cards can cut your costs drastically. Check the local tourism board in each city for info when you arrive.
- Rideshare – If you’re flexible in your schedule, use the ridesharing service BlaBlaCar to catch rides with locals between cities. I used this service and not only did I save money, I got to meet interesting people and learn more about life in Italy. This is a good option to book a few days in advance. Just make sure to pick someone who has good ratings because newer drivers can have a tendency to be unreliable or cancel at the last minute.
Where to Stay in Italy
There’s a lot of hostels and hotels in Italy to choose from. Check out my city guides for a more complete list of favorites but, below, are some of my top recommended hostels and budget hotels in Italy:
- Loly Boutique Hotel (Rome)
- The Beehive (Rome)
- Hotel Montecarlo (Venice)
- Generator (Venice)
- Hostel of the Sun (Naples)
- Ulisse Deluxe (Sorrento)
- Hotel Bologna (Pisa)
- Hostel Pisa Tower (Pisa)
How to Get Around Italy
Public transportation – Public transportation is available in all the major cities in Italy (many of which have comprehensive metro systems). Tickets usually cost between 1-2 EUR for a single journey. Some cities also have day passes that offer unlimited travel. In Rome, you can purchase a one-day pass for unlimited travel for 7 EUR. A three-day pass costs 18 EUR, for example. While public transportation is generally reliable, traffic can be a nightmare — especially in Rome.
Train – The best way to get around Italy is via their extensive train network. Prices are affordable too, with most trips costing just 10-30 EUR. Rome to Florence takes just 90 minutes (on the fast train) with tickets starting at 25 EUR. Rome to Venice takes around 4 hours with tickets starting around 45 EUR. Rome to Naples is just over one hour and costs around 20 EUR.
Italo and Trenitalia are the two main rail systems. Tickets on Trenitalia are often a standard price, while Italo’s ticket prices fluctuate more widely.
To find routes and prices for trains around Italy (and Europe), use Trainline .
Bus – The bus is slower than the train but cheaper, with prices on FlixBus starting as low as 6 EUR. This isn’t the most convenient or fastest way to travel, but the buses are comfortable and good for short and medium journeys. Most buses come with outlets and free Wi-Fi too.
The 4-hour trip from Rome to Florence costs around 3-12 EUR, while a longer trip like Venice to Naples takes 10-15 hours and costs just 7-26 EUR.
Flying – If you’re pressed for time and are looking to jump from one city to the next, a budget airline might be the way to go. Prices can be incredibly low on airlines like Ryanair.
That said, when you factor in the time spent at airports, you’re likely not going to save much time when compared to high-speed trains. Also, keep in mind that you’ll have to pay to check your baggage on these cheap flights and you usually need to print your boarding pass out too (or pay a fee).
Ferry – If you want to visit some of Italy’s amazing islands, you’ll have to book a ferry. Ferries are frequent and you don’t need to book too far in advance, but during peak season it’s a good idea to book at least a few weeks ahead. You can use FerryHopper to find routes and prices. The popular one-hour ferry from Naples to Capri starts from 27 EUR.
Car rental – Car rentals are generally quite affordable here, usually starting around 25-35 EUR per day for a multi-day rental. Just make sure you have an International Driving Permit (IDP) as it’s required before you rent a car. Also, keep in mind that Italian drivers can be on the aggressive side so drive cautiously. For the best rental car deals, use Discover Cars .
When to Go to Italy
There’s no wrong time to visit Italy. Historically, the peak season has been July and August, but post-COVID cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice are busy pretty much year-round.
There’s a huge variation in climate across the country. Temperatures can soar as high as 36°C (98°F) during the summer in the southern part of the country, and popular cities like Rome, Venice, and Florence experience a huge influx of visitors. I’d try to avoid visiting these cities in the summer if you can as it’s just too crowded, too hot, and prices increase during this time as well. However, if you want to visit the Alps in the northern part of the country, near Milan, summer is when the weather is best. Temperatures are around 24°C (76°F), but you’ll have to deal with the crowds.
Personally, I think the best time to visit Italy is during the shoulder season (March-May and September-October). It’s still warm in the south but the crowds have thinned and prices are lower. This is a particularly great time to hang out in the Mediterranean. Expect daily highs around 22°C (72°F). It’s still nice in the northern part of the country too. Average temperatures are around 14°C (57°F), so you’ll want layers for the cool mornings and evenings. If you want to get into the higher elevations, plan on colder temperatures and the possibility of snow.
Winter is from November to February. It gets cold, and tourist crowds thin out considerably. Temperatures vary quite a bit from north to south, with it sometimes dropping to 2°C (36°F) in Milan and 4°C (39°F) in Rome. In the south, near Sorrento and Naples, average temperatures are closer to 12°C (54°F) and you won’t have to worry about snow. On the other hand, November to December is fantastic — you’ll find Christmas markets and festivals galore!
How to Stay Safe in Italy
Italy is a safe country to travel as violent crime against tourists is very rare. However, scams and pickpocketing are incredibly common, especially around high-traffic tourist sites in places like Rome and Venice. Always keep your valuables secure and out of sight on public transportation and when out and about. The biggest things to watch out for are pickpockets on public transportation and in crowds. Don’t leave your bag open or put your mobile phone in loose jacket pockets on the tram or subway.
Be wary of people selling discounted tickets on the street. Chances are they are fake so always buy tickets from reputable sellers only. If you take a taxi somewhere, make sure the driver uses the meter so you don’t get ripped off.
You can read about other common travel scams to avoid here.
Solo female travelers should generally feel safe in Italy. However, the standard safety precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.). Catcalling is not uncommon in Italy. Also, on public transport be mindful of groping on public transport. For specific tips, check out one of the many solo female travel blogs on the country as they will have better advice for you.
If you rent a car, make sure you drive carefully and also have extra insurance. The roads in much of the country are very winding and narrow and drivers here are on the aggressive side.
Natural disasters here are uncommon, but since there are several active volcanoes in the country they can occur. Venice is also prone to flooding, so always be mindful of the weather while you’re here and heed any warnings or advisories.
If you experience an emergency, dial 113 for assistance.
Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID.
The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
