Campaign on deadly danger posed by REM tracks

travel for life campaign

By The Canadian Press, Zoé Magalhaès

Posted May 27, 2024 12:32 pm.

Last Updated May 27, 2024 12:42 pm.

“This is a matter of life and death. Do not travel on the REM route.” This is the message that the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) wants to send with its new awareness campaign launched on Monday.

While dynamic tests soon beginning on the section of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) linking Deux-Montagnes to Laval and Montreal, CDPQ Infra wanted to remind people of the dangers faced by those who attempt to go beyond the fences to cross the tracks or come and commit misdeeds there.

With the line closed since 2021 to be redeveloped for the deployment of the REM, CDPQ Infra has noted that some people have developed bad habits and regularly go to the tracks.

travel for life campaign

“We have noticed several intrusions in recent months,” reports Francis Labbé, spokesperson for REM at CDPQ Infra. In some cases, people come to commit mischief, like to create graffiti for example, sometimes it is simply to save time.”

In all cases, these people risk their lives, underlines the spokesperson.

The first risk is of course that of being hit by a train, he explains. While the trains which ran on the old “Deux-Montagnes line” left every 20 minutes, with the dynamic tests which will begin on June 25, the new REM trains will leave every seven minutes on this section.

Elsewhere, such as in the Saint-Laurent sector, they will even pass every three minutes during rush hours.

“We are multiplying the number of trains passing by hundreds and that means there is a risk of being hit if someone ever crosses our facilities,” summarizes Labbé.

This is also the reason why the entire line is now protected by fences.

High electrical voltage

The other risk is that linked to the electrification of the line and therefore to the presence of catenaries, very dangerous high-voltage electrical cables.

For comparison, while the electrical current in a house is 120 volts, the Hydro-Québec distribution network generally operates at a voltage of 25,000 volts.

“The rule is very simple, it is to keep a distance of three meters from electrical conductors,” explains Hydro-Québec spokesperson Maxence Huard-Lefebvre.

“If we approach closer than three meters, there is a risk of being electrified or electrocuted by the electric current without even touching the wires or the electrical equipment,” he adds, making reference to the electric arc phenomenon which can occur when a person enters this type of infrastructure.

Talk to young people

The CDPQ Infra campaign is aimed at everyone and the safety instructions it wishes to remind do not only apply to the Deux-Montagnes section, but to the entire REM.

It will thus be widely deployed across the region, in particular with posters in bus shelters in areas close to REM lines. Thanks to geolocation, around the REM, banners will also appear on the smartphones of people who consult, for example, the sites or applications of several media.

But the campaign also intends to particularly target young people who are at risk of trespassing on the tracks, underlines Labbé.

“We wanted to send very clear messages, and it is aimed a lot at young people,” he says. For example: “To save five minutes, would you spend five months in a coma?” Or, for those who would be tempted to make graffiti, “To make a graffiti of death, would you be willing to lose your life?”

In partnership with Urbania and an influencer, CDPQ Infra will also broadcast its awareness messages on TikTok, the social network being particularly popular with young people.

This Simple Travel Hack Might Stop Your Kids From Asking: ‘Are We There Yet?’

A new study finds podcasts may help families get through a long road trip easier.

GettyImages/MoMo Productions

When it comes to summer travel, many people are ditching planes and cruises for road trips. One study finds 76% of Americans are planning to drive for their vacation sometime between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend, an increase of 18% from 2023.

That includes families: The podcast network Wondery conducted a survey of 1,000 American parents with kids ages 3 to 12, and found more than half of families are planning to take a road trip lasting seven or more hours this summer.

Any parent knows a road trip can feel even longer when kids are your passengers. Between restlessness, drinks spilling, and arguments between siblings, there can be many hurdles to try and overcome in that one car ride. It makes sense then why 90% of parents in the Wondery survey say having good entertainment options can help a family road trip go more smoothly.

That’s where podcasts come in. Of the respondents, 85% say their family learns new things when listening to podcasts on their road trip, while 82% say it enhances their appreciation for the trip. More than 85% say podcasts spark conversations or ignite laughter and humor.

Perhaps an even greater plus of podcasts on road trips is their ability to help kids stay calm. More than three-quarters of the parents say listening to podcasts on their trip reduces the times their kids ask that dreaded question of “Are we there yet?” Almost as many parents say their children behave better overall or are less likely to argue.

To help parents through their journeys, Wondery is planning to release new audio content throughout May and June, along with activities, through its Summer of Wow campaign . Tinkercast’s  Wow in the World,  a popular science podcast for kids and their parents, will be one of those shows. For hosts Guy Raz and Mindy Thomas, the impact podcasts can have isn’t surprising.

“Listening together is a screen-free way for everyone to be entertained. It’s a shared experience that can get kids talking, laughing, asking questions, and thinking about things in a new way,” says Thomas. "Shows like  Wow in the World  give parents permission to laugh at poop jokes in the name of peer-reviewed science, and it gives kids (who already know fart jokes rule) a chance to learn amazing things about the world.”

Raz agrees, pointing out that podcasts can unite family members who typically each have their own screen when on vacation. That’s especially true for podcasts meant for all members of the family to listen to together.

“When you play a podcast and listen together, it creates a connection between everyone in the group,” he explains. “Our podcasts are designed to be fun and entertaining for both kids and grown-ups. There are jokes and references that only grown-ups may understand, but there is also deep serious science in every episode that’s hidden in a magical story that keeps everyone entertained.”

If science isn't your family's favorite subject, that's OK because there are a ton of other podcasts your kids can be listening to .

Overall, podcast engagement for kids has increased over the years. A 2023 study found about 48% of kids in the U.S. listen to podcasts weekly. The same percentage also said they listen with a parent at least most of the time. Research finds the pandemic lockdowns may have influenced the increase in podcast listening among our younger population. Whatever the reason, podcasts do come with benefits.

Along with possibly making a road trip with kids more enjoyable, podcasts can be educational, create needed social connections, and may boost a greater sense of meaning in life, according to research. So, why not give it a try and listen to one the next time your family hits the road?

Palace gives new update on Kate and what she’s been working on during treatment

The Princess of Wales is ‘excited’ by a new report highlighting the economic benefits of prioritising early childhood.

Last year Kate Middleton launched her ‘life’s work’, a campaign called Shaping Us which highlights the importance of the first five years of a child’s life.

Kensington Palace has stressed that the princess has not returned to work , as she is still undergoing treatment for cancer , but said that Kate is being kept up to date throughout the process.

Despite her cancer diagnosis she has been following the work of the Royal Foundation Business Taskforce for Early Childhood.

Christian Guy, executive director of the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, briefed Kate on the new report and said she was ‘excited’ by the document.

He said: ‘Shaping Us was about awareness but also for her it’s so important to have action.

Highlighting the importance of early years is her ‘life’s work’ (Picture: PA)

‘So to have eight of the most significant businesses in Britain come forward, make the case to their fellow business leaders is vital – it’s exciting for her and it’s a priority going forward for our centre’s work.

‘This is another crucial moment for Her Royal Highness’ early childhood work because its impact, and the work of her Centre for Early Childhood, is rolling on as she recovers.’

Its new report recommends a range of interventions, from creating a culture inside and outside firms that prioritises childhood, to supporting parents with greater resources and flexibility in the workplace.

The chief executives of Ikea, NatWest Group and Deloitte are some of the taskforce’s eight members – and their report highlights how the nation could benefit from an estimated £45.5billion.

The princess has been working to raise the profile of the early years development of children for some years and established her centre in 2021 as part of the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said: ‘ Early childhood is a huge priority for the Princess of Wales , and she has been kept fully up to date throughout the process and the development of the task force’s work and she has seen the report.’

The report suggests the potential billions of pounds of benefits could be achieved by equipping youngsters with social and emotional skills, supporting parents wanting to return to work, and reducing the need to spend public funds on those who experienced difficult childhoods which might have been avoided through preventative action in early childhood.

Emma Franklin, a director of consulting with Deloitte which produced the taskforce’s report, said that by ‘investing in social and emotional skills for the under-fives’, known as ‘soft skills’ and associated with resilience, problem solving and empathy, ‘we could see a productivity gain of about £12.2billion over the course of a generation’.

She added: ‘Then we also look at the opportunity to encourage parents and caregivers to get back into the workforce if they had access to more suitable childcare opportunities, and that figure comes in at around £17.2billion.

‘Finally, we look at the public expenditure currently around mitigating adverse childhood experiences, so children that suffer from neglect and abuse, and if we were able to reduce some of that it comes in around £16.1billion and the three figure total together equates to a £45.5billion net gain for the UK economy.’

Red Nose Day 2024 fights child poverty with the ‘whimsy’ of a candy castle, monster truck and Legos

The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — An edible, life-sized cookie of the contest winner and a car-crushing monster truck ride are two of the new prizes up for grabs in the Red Nose Day 2024 campaign, which ramps up Thursday.

As Comic Relief US’s fundraising initiative for underserved American children enters its 10th year, the charity is hoping to draw donations by encouraging the childlike wonder that millions of poverty-stricken kids might miss. First disseminated through clown-like schnozzes at Walgreens locations, the message is spreading this year through Instagram sing-alongs, a sweepstakes and new partners such as Lego.

It’s all an effort to “evoke the childhood dream of whimsy,” Comic Relief US CEO Alison Moore told The Associated Press.

In 2022, child poverty doubled in the United States , as pandemic-era benefits expired, adding relevance to the mission. Since 2015, Red Nose Day has raised $370 million to stock community food centers and fund local health workers, among other anti-poverty measures worldwide.

Through June 3, contributions on Red Nose Day’s website will unlock an entry into a “Childhood Dreamstakes” for one of six experiences that hope to stir the fanciful wishes of youth. In addition to the cookie and the truck, donors could win an edible cotton candy castle, a personalized hot air balloon ride, a giant model volcano eruption or “a trip to befriend a penguin.”

Planned with help from creative agency Gus, the campaign expects that the “fun-filled moments” will highlight the importance of a “healthy, fruitful childhood” and “creating space to let kids be kids.”

“To us, it’s a reminder of the carefree happiness every child deserves, and the childhood sense of fun and wonder that’s inside us all,” Gus co-founder Spencer LaVallee said in a statement.

Comic Relief US is once more relying on entertainers to generate awareness. Halftime skills challenges during the Harlem Globetrotters’ domestic tour featured a custom Red Nose Day basketball. Longtime partner NBC plans to celebrate the decadelong drive with a one-hour special Thursday including “The Voice” coaches John Legend, Chance the Rapper, Reba McEntire and Dan + Shay.

As in recent years, Comic Relief US is foregoing the physical red nose once available to Walgreens customers. What’s new are interactive filters that place digital ones on users’ faces across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Snapchat. Pets should even be able to don a virtual red nose on the latter two platforms.

While the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is again backing the campaign, the push is also aided by first-time corporate collaborations with some kid-friendly brands. Aimed toward field trips, Lego’s “The Biggest Build” challenge will invite students to design their dream communities at 14 museums around the country. Chuck E. Cheese locations are soliciting round-up contributions at checkout this month and donating 20% of participating sales on Thursday.

Others in the philanthropic sector credited Comic Relief US for staying authentic to Red Nose Day over the past 10 years. The tactics won’t work for every fundraiser, said Elevate Prize Foundation CEO Carolina Garcia Jayaram, who founded the nonprofit supporting social entrepreneurs.

But Jayaram said fundraising is about meeting people where they are — and comedy and popular culture have proven to be successful avenues for drawing attention toward childhood poverty.

“There’s not nearly enough money being pumped into these solutions,” Jayaram told the AP at the nonprofit’s annual Make Good Famous Summit on Wednesday. “I wish we didn’t all have to get out there and do a big song and dance for all that money. But if it works, it works.”

Associated Press writer Glenn Gamboa in Miami Beach, Florida, contributed to this report.
