You can also listen to these before you travel, and choose your favorite songs. Immerse yourself in the French lyrics, melodies and rhythms, as you look forward to your vacation!

From car and cell phone pick up at the airport to accomodations, drive times, suggestions on where to eat, activities, admission fees...Emilie covered it all. In addition you get a beautiful travel size book (or two!) with pictures, tips, itinerary, contact info and anything else you might need for a successful trip. We even contacted her because we were running late for a scheduled activity. She got in touch with the venue and gave us an alternate time to participate. 25 Songs About Paris That’ll Take You Right There

Whether you’ve planned a trip to France or are simply dreaming of being there, music is a powerful and visceral way to virtually travel. From chanson française classics to dreamy piano concertos and Afro-European pop, songs about Paris (or ones that evoke the city and its culture in some way) can transport and inspire.

Even if you have no trip to the capital on the horizon, there are a few ways you can still get your Parisian fix, right from your couch or while attempting a soufflé in your kitchen (hint: don’t open that oven to check on its progress!) Keep reading for my carefully curated playlist of music– both French and otherwise– that takes you there.

The Paris Unlocked Playlist

I’ve put together a compilation of over 25 songs that, at least when I’m in the right frame of mind, bring me straight to Paris. Hopefully, they’ll do the trick for you too.

They’re not all necessarily about the city, but they’re permeated with it, in ways that are both subtle and obvious. Some of these “Paris songs” are linked to personal memories and experiences, while others are pure classics that most of you will recognize.

You can listen to the playlist for free here, on Spotify . And below, I offer a few brief comments on what makes the first songs I chose worthy of the cut (in my humble opinion, anyway). I’ll then aim to expand it in the coming months until I cover all the songs on the original playlist.

But I certainly don’t intend for it to be static. Feel free to add suggestions for how I can expand the list in your comments– then watch as it grows and evolves with your input.

1. Paris Combo: On n’a Pas Besoin

The opening song from Paris Combo’s eponymous debut album sets the mood for a virtual Parisian evening, with jazzy strings and smooth, gradually intensifying vocals from Belle du Berry.

The French group’s sound echoes numerous influences, from Django Reinhardt to big-band swing, cabaret tunes and Afro-Cuban rhythms.

This track inevitably shuttles me back to a Paris of the early 2000s, when I first moved to the city as a bright-eyed, aspiring writer.

It evokes muggy summer evenings with windows flung open, looking out over the rooftops and marveling at a city that remained mostly unknown to me.

Lines to remember: “On n’a pas besoin de chercher si loin/On trouve ce qu’on veut, à côté d’chez soi ( You don’t need to look far/One finds what one wants close to home ).

The chorus is ironic, since the song in fact castigates those with unadventurous, closed minds who fear anything or anyone different. But as a “quarantune”, you have to admit that it’s somewhat fitting.

2. Amadou & Mariam: Je Pense à Toi

This is probably one of the most haunting and simple love songs composed in French over the past few decades. It skyrocketed up the charts in France upon its release in 1998.

Written by Malian duo Amadou & Mariam , the song features the former’s earnest, lilting vocals paired with simple percussion and violin. It’s the ballad of anxious, devoted lovers everywhere; those who fear they may have too little to offer and far too much to lose.

It’s Parisian because it conquered the city to become a timeless ballad. It remains played (and drunkenly belted) in melancholy lounges and moody bars, alongside standards like Brel’s “Ne me quitte pas” (see further down).

Lines to remember: “Certains t’ont promis la terre/D’autres promettent le ciel/Il y en a qui t’ont promis la lune/Et moi je n’ai rien que ma pauvre guitare ( Some have promised you the earth/Others have promised the sky/Some have promised you the moon/And I’ve nothing [to offer] but my poor guitar )

3. Joni Mitchell: Free Man in Paris

All-around genius Joni Mitchell wrote this song, the story goes, for her producer and friend David Geffen. The second track on her 1974 double-platinum album Court and Spark , the song tells the story of a frayed, overworked executive who can’t get away from the demands of aspiring stars.

But he finds freedom, of course, in the anonymous streets of the French capital.

This is one of Mitchell’s lighter, more playful tracks, perhaps because she’s putting herself in someone else’s shoes and is clearly having fun with it.

It features catchy guitars and jazzy refrain centered around woodwinds. Graham Nash and David Crosby are on background vocals.

Lines to remember: “If I had my way, I’d just walk through those doors/And wander down the Champs-Elysées/Goin’ café to cabaret/Wonderin’ how I’ll feel when I find/That very good friend of mine…

On a side note, I prefer imagining Joni herself wandering down the “Champs”. But I’d also like to tell her that it’s really not the most interesting place to be if you hope to get an even remotely local experience of the city…

4. Yann Tiersen: Monochrome

Yann Tiersen rose to fame by composing numerous songs from the Amelie soundtrack (and one is featured further down in this playlist, by the way). But it’s his third studio album Le Phare (1998) that I’ve always found the most compelling. Incidentally, three songs from the album were added to the aforementioned soundtrack.

“Monochrome”, track number three, is the only song on the album with lyrics in (a charmingly pronounced and syntactically poetic) English.

It features vocals from French songwriter and Tiersen collaborator Dominique A, as well as swelling violin, a small, tinkling bell, and accordions that (for once) don’t irritate the s&!@t out of me.

Lines to remember: “I am piling up some unread books under my bed/ and I really think I’ll never read again/No concentration, just a white disorder everywhere around me, you know I’m so tired now/Don’t worry, I often go to dinners and parties/ with some old friends who care for me, take me back home and stay/Monochrome floors, monochrome walls, only absence near me/nothing but silence around me…”

During some of my moodier and darker days in Paris (and there were a few), Tiersen’s song seemed a fitting anthem indeed.

Paris is known as the ville grisatre (grey city) par excellence, especially in the eyes of French people who live outside the capital. And on a rainy, short November day, this is the mood that tends to reign there.

5. Jeff Buckley covering Edith Piaf: Je n’en connais pas la fin (live)

This is probably my favorite cover from the late, great Jeff Buckley: a brilliant, haunted version of Edith Piaf’s “Je n’en connais pas la fin”, appearing on Buckley’s powerful Live at Siné album.

Lines to remember: “I can’t forget my little square/Even though I’m so far away/I can’t forget my little fair/Maybe she’s still there, still there today/I sometimes hear that little tune/Playing in a dream of long ago…/And in my brain/runs the refrain/that old French refrain/I used to know…/Oh mon amour…”

This hits the nostalgic spot in my own brain, on so many levels. I discovered Buckley during my first year living in France– in Lyon, rather than in Paris. His albums were a constant presence in the years that followed.

And this song in particular creates an aching sense of homesickness for a city where I no longer live in (save a few precious weeks a year.) It particularly makes me think of Belleville , the quartier Piaf is likely referencing in her original song , and where I lived for many years.

I also am inevitably moved by the respect and indebtedness with which Buckley takes up Piaf’s legacy. It’s rare for a male musician to cover female artists with such reverence, but when Buckley breaks out into a falsetto on the chorus, singing O mon amour…. , there’s something eerie about how he almost channels his predecessor.

It’s one of the many reasons why I will always lament that the world lost Buckley so early, and far too soon.

6. Marc Lavoine & Souad Massi: Paris

This stirring duet from French songwriter Marc Lavoine and native Algerian/now-Parisian musician Souad Massi has stayed with me ever since it featured in an ad for a city-wide cinema event years ago. It’s an adaptation of the original song written by Lavoine , and his collaboration with Massi makes it even more powerful.

With moving vocals, Spanish-style guitar and percussion that draws on North African traditions, the song imagines the city as a sort of cruel suitor.

This is a Paris that heartlessly discards and stamps on vulnerable residents, who remain devoted to the city and plead that they’ll do anything for it, as they drift from cafes to cinemas, hotels to boulevards.

Lines to remember: “Paris Paris combien?/Paris tu ce que tu veux/Boulevards des bouleversés/Paris tu m’as renversé/Paris tu m’as laissé ” ( Paris, Paris, how much?/Paris, anything you want/Boulevards of the devastated/Paris, you ran me over/Paris, you left me behind)

This is one of several songs on the playlist that cast the French capital as an unforgiving object of love. Listen to it alongside “Paris Nous Nourrit, Paris Nous Affame” by La Rumeur (track 18).

7. Françoise Hardy: Le Temps de l’Amour

Switching to a more relaxed and nostalgic mode, let’s turn now to a classic track from Françoise Hardy, the genuine darling of 1960s France. (You may think it’s Brigitte Bardot, but Hardy has a more positive legacy, not least since Bardot is now a vocal racist and xenophobe who campaigns for the far-right in France.)

Opening with surf-style guitar, the track is pure summer insouciance and youthful nostalgia. Hardy, with her deep yet effortlessly poppy voice, announces that “this is the time of love, friends and adventure”– and we’re off.

If this track doesn’t make you think of lazy, dusky evenings along the Seine or the Canal St-Martin, sipping rosé and kisses, I’m not sure what would.

Lines to remember: “Car le temps de l’amour/C’est long et c’est court/Ca dure toujours, on s’en souvient/On se dit qu’ a vingt ans on est le roi du monde/Et qu’ éternellement il y aura dans nos yeux/Tout le ciel bleu.”( Because the time of love/Is long and short/It lasts forever, we’ll remember/At 20 you think you’re the king of the world/And that eternally/the whole blue sky/will be in our eyes”)

Part of the charm of the song is that it implicitly either looks back on youth’s belief in its own eternity, or shows a rare moment when youth becomes conscious of its fleeting nature.

But screw the ponderous analysis. It’s fun. C’est tout.

8. Edith Piaf: C’était une Histoire d’Amour

You may have guessed that at least one classic track performed by the legendary Edith Piaf would make it into the top 10– and you were correct. While “La Vie en Rose” is probably her most-recognized song (see the cover from Dalida further down on the playlist), “ C’était une histoire d’amour” (It Was a Love Story) is probably my favorite.

It admittedly helps that accordions are refreshingly absent from this 1943 song. It’s a relatively pared-back composition whose semi-muted, jazzy strings complement Piaf’s robust vocals.

The song tells the story of a love affair come and gone, with the present-day “chagrin” worth the joys of the past.

It’s a wistful, deeply moving portrait of someone surveying the ashes of un amour perdu , but proving the truism that “It’s better to have loved and lost…”

Lines to remember: “Mais quand les histoires sont trop jolies/Ça ne peut pas durer toujours…/C’était une histoire d’amour/Ma part de joie ma part de fête/Il a bien fallu qu’elle s’achète/Pour me faire un chagrin d’amour.” (But when {love} stories are too pretty/They can ‘t last forever/It was a love story/My share of joy, my share of celebration/It had to spend itself/To give me heartache)

Where is the South of France?

The south of France, also known as southern France and in French as  le Midi , is a defined geographical area consisting of five regions of France.

Those regions are southern Nouvelle-Aquitaine in the west which borders the Atlantic Ocean, Occitanie in the centre and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur in the southeast, which borders the Mediterranean Sea, and the most southern parts of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in the northeast.

Our road trip to the south of France starts in lively Nice in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and ends in the pink city of Toulouse, in northern Occitanie.

Getting There

Best Time to Take a French Road Trip

March to may.

Spring is a wonderful time to visit the south of France, with temperatures warming up across the country. Food markets increase in size, restaurants start preparing different dishes and the countryside is glorious. You’ll still find the roads and cities less crowded, and most attractions will be open.

June to August

June and July are the busiest months for south of France road trips. With perfect temperatures for camping and outdoor activities, as well as the legendary Provencal lavender and sunflowers in bloom June is probably the best month, as schools have yet to break up across Europe and the family rush to the coasts has not yet started.

August brings the French annual holidays when many businesses close for the duration. If you’re planning on road tripping in the south of France, you’ll have perfect holiday weather, but the coasts and beaches will be busy.

September to November

Autumn is a fantastic time for French road trips , especially in the south of France. The coast will be quieter but if you’re lucky, you’ll enjoy an Indian summer amongst the grape harvest and the changing colours of the fall countryside.

December to February

The winter months in France can be very cold, but in the south of the country, they remain mild although rain is quite common at this time of year. But, the roads and cities will be quiet and less crowded, although not all attractions will be open.

South of France Road Trip Highlights

Nice to verdon gorge.

It is best to arrive in Nice, one of the most captivating cities in France , one to two days earlier to explore the biggest city on the French Riviera. Stroll along the promenade and browse for fresh produce and local snacks at the Cours Saleya market. To see several elite artworks, visit MAMAC (Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain) for some art history.

Once you’ve thoroughly explored Nice, the first day’s itinerary is the longest, so it’s best to get on the road early. The trip starts from the coast and heads inland towards the interior to explore a medieval town, lavender fields, and Europe’s largest canyon. 

1 hour 45 minutes from Nice

Head from Nice to Entrevaux, a medieval village founded in the 11 th century. Visitors can enter on a drawbridge that leads the way into the old town, with its narrow cobblestone streets and Gothic cathedral.

Go up the hilltop citadel for the best panoramic views of the Var valley below. If it’s July, plan the road trip to coincide with the annual Entrevaux Medieval Festival .

Valensole Plateau

1 hour 45 minutes from Entrevaux

About four minutes into the journey from Entrevaux, beautiful river scenery will appear as you cross the Var Bridge (Ponte Sur Le Var). Don’t miss the small Napoleon Bonaparte statue, about 27 miles from Entrevaux, that will appear on the right-hand side – this road is part of the famous Route Napoleon, one of the best driving roads in Europe , which follows the footsteps of the famous General on his return from exile in Elba, as he headed north for Waterloo.

Once on the Valensole Plateau, stop at the many roadside sites to appreciate the most magnificent lavender fields in the Provence region, which are at their best in June and July. In the small town of Valensole itself, go to Comptoir de Valerie or Brasserie du Plateau to enjoy a nice lunch. 

Verdon Gorge

1 hour 20 minutes from Valensole

From Valensole, take the D6 toRiez, and then the D952 to the stunning Gorge du Verdon, the 765-yard-deep river canyon. If you have time, stop on the way in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a charming Provencal village with a tiny monastery high in the hills behind the town. It’s a bit touristy, but beautiful nonetheless and on most days they have a great farmers market here.

Spend the rest of the day making the most of the Verdon Regional Natural Park, which offers various recreational activities like swimming, hiking, and water sports.

Verdon Gorge to St Tropez

The second day’s itinerary requires driving for just over four hours, starting inland and heading toward the coast to explore perfume, art history, and gorgeous beaches. 

1 hour 45 minutes from Verdon Gorge

Drive east towards Grasse, which has UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage status as the perfume capital of the world , and produces more perfume than any other city in the world. Ensure to visit the three leading perfume houses of Fragonard, Galimard, and Molinard, and spend an hour designing your own fragrance with an expert .

Follow the old town’s cobbled streets and visit the Cathédrale Notre Dame du Puy or one of the many museums, like the Villa Musée Jean-Honoré Fragonard . The latter is dedicated to the works of artist Fragonard, not to be mistaken for the perfumer.

35 minutes from Grasse

Make your way southeast towards the coast to Antibes. This ancient, walled beach town was home to Pablo Picasso and is one of the largest marinas in Europe. July is a busy month in Antibes as it hosts the annual Feasts of Our Lady of Bon Port , Bastille Day, and the pottery market.

Visit the Pablo Picasso Museum or the Provencal market. For a hearty lunch, stop by Bistro Chez Jules . If you prefer a more upmarket venue with a scenic view overlooking the ocean, try Maison de Bacon . 

25 minutes from Antibes

A short drive down the coast will bring you to Cannes , one of the more popular spots on the French Riviera. This town is famous for its private beach clubs, luxury shops, gourmet restaurants, and the International Film Festival.  

For those that enjoy people-watching in the hopes of spotting a celebrity, take a walk along the La Croisette promenade. Otherwise, take a stroll through one of Cannes’ oldest neighborhoods, Le Suquet , which dates back to Roman times.  

Saint-Tropez

1 hour 25 minutes from Cannes

Saint Tropez, like Cannes, is a playground for the rich and famous. One can’t believe that it was once merely a humble fishing village. It’s now home to the uber-wealthy, with numerous superyachts and supercars scattered around town. Petrol heads will be delighted to spot a few rare beauties. 

There are so many things to do on the French Riviera , and Saint-Tropez is one of the places to visit. 40 splendid beaches, an atmospheric and Instagrammable old town, a lively port and plenty of great dining spots make Saint-Tropez a wonderful place to spend a day mooching and exploring.

If you have time, head up to the breathtaking hilltop village of Gassin, a few miles south on the Saint-Tropez peninsula. The pretty streets, cute houses, gorgeous boutiques and fabulous restaurants have the most amazing view over the gulf of Saint-Tropez.

St Tropez To Marseille

The third day of the South France itinerary makes up the last stretch of the Côte d’Azur, also known as the French Riviera, which ends in Marseille. The total driving time for the day is approximately 3 hours.

1 hour 15 minutes from St Tropez

The route to Toulon includes a great stop, about 30 minutes outside of Saint-Tropez, where you can explore the beautiful winery of Domaine Clos Du Noyer Mistinguett . It might be too early in the day for a tasting tour – is it ever too early? – but shopping for wine is a must.

Toulon is the third largest city on the coast of southern France, after Nice and Marseille. Take the cable car up Mount Faron for stunning views of the peninsula. Once there, it is worth visiting the Musée Mémorial du Débarquement , a WWII fortress commemorating the allied landing of 1944. 

20 minutes from Toulon

Only a 20 minute drive from Toulon is Bandol, a small seaside town known for its cruise port, wineries, and superb restaurants.

Walk down the Charles de Gaulle pier to enjoy lunch at Auberge Du Port . They make great cocktails and serve traditional French cuisine. Or, for something different, eat right on the sands at Le Sana’beach . 

Cassis & Calanques National Park

1 hour from Bandol

Cassis is a beautiful pastel-painted town which was once a fishing village and now has a gorgeous harbour and small beach.

Cassis is most famous for the Calanques National Park. The Calanques themselves are huge gashes into the cliffs which create incredible deep coves and beaches, full of diverse flora and fauna and perfect for exploring by kayak or boat.

The park has some of the best hiking trails, but one can also tour the area by sea. There are multiple boat trips from Cassis to choose from and a 90 minute excursion will be plenty to enjoy the sights.

If you’re feeling energetic, pack a picnic, hire a sea kayak or paddleboard then head for the sublime Calanque d’En-Vau which is blessed with turquoise waters, a small beach and fantastic snorkelling.

You don’t need any special skills other than being able to swim and move your arms – the 60 to 90 minutes of paddling each way are so worth it!

30 minutes from Cassis

En route to Marseille, about 3.4 miles outside the national park, make sure to stop at the famous Unite d’Habitation . This modernist residential housing complex was designed by Le Corbusier and is a must-see for any architecture enthusiast. 

A 15 minute drive further brings you to Marseille, the biggest port in France. Visit the Notre Dame de la Garde basilica and the Palais Longchamp, which boast beautiful gardens and architecture, along with two museums on the grounds. For something a bit different, an e bike tour of Marseill e means you can discover a lot of the city without getting tired.

For dinner, go to Grand Bar des Goudes , which overlooks the harbour. For a unique experience, find the Chez Ge pizza truck on Boulevard de la Blancarde. A former chef who worked at the Michelin-star restaurant Le Petit Nice owns it and will serve a pizza that will be hard to forget!

Marseille to arles.

The fourth day’s itinerary requires driving for about 3 hours and 20 minutes. It will offer a glimpse into art history, olive oil production, and idyllic old towns with cobblestone roads.

Aix-en-Provence

35 minutes from Marseille

Going back into the interior is the town of Aix-en-Provence. You’ll be charmed by the leafy boulevards and public squares, which are lined with elegant 17th and 18th century buildings. There are fountains everywhere, leading to Aix being known as the “City of a Thousand Fountains”.

Experience some of the best products from the open markets, stroll down the lively Cours Mirabeau, a scenic tree-lined street, or go and see the Saint-Savior Cathedral .

For art lovers, there’s the Tapestry Museum or Atelier de Cézanne to get a first-hand experience of the space Paul Cezanne occupied while creating his masterpieces. 

1 hour 15 minutes from Aix-en-Provence

Deeper inland lies the town of Gordes, one of Provence’s most picturesque small towns. For a unique experience, stop ten minutes before you approach Gordes at Clos des Jeannons , an olive oil mill, for a tasting and to see how olive oil is made.

Upon arrival, dine on an open terrace at L’Artegal or La Trinquette for stunning views. After lunch, stroll through the old town’s cobbled lanes and admire the Gordes Castle and several interesting churches.

Avignon offers many activities, especially in the arts and culture scene. During July, the town welcomes the annual Jazz Festival and the Avignon Festival , one of the most significant international contemporary live performance events.  

The sites to explore in Avignon include the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fortress of Palais des Papes, and Les Halles food market. Finally, go to the town square to see the stunning city hall and opera house.

Art lovers can only think of Arles and be reminded of Vincent Van Gogh, which makes a Van Gogh self-guided walking tour a must-do. Visitors can explore sites seen in his paintings, including Cafe du Forum and the Rhone river embankment from where he painted Starry Night over the Rhone . 

If you have time, make a trip to the Camargue Regional Natural Park , south of Arles. The Camargue is a unique place situated between two forks of the Rhône River and is known for its migratory birds, flamingoes, and wild bulls and horses.

Arles To Montpellier 

The fifth day of the southern France itinerary requires little driving, only 2 hours 15 minutes. It will showcase Roman architecture, exquisite gardens, and medieval ruins.

Saint-Gilles du Gard

25 minutes from Arles

Once in Saint-Gilles-du-Gard, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of The Abbey of Saint-Gilles. Saint Gilles founded it in the 7 th century, but after restorations, it resembles 12th century Romanesque architecture.

30 minutes from Saint-Gilles du Gard

Once in Nîmes, step back in time at the  Les Arènes  Roman amphitheatre, which is still used for concerts and celebrations. An open plane is next to the theater showing the breathtaking marble Fontaine Pradier erected in 1851. 

Afterwards, walk through the scenic 18th century garden, Jardins de la Fontaine, before heading to L’Atelier du Sandwich for some sophisticated street food.

To the northeast of Nimes between Remoulins and Vers-Pont du Gard is the Pont du Gard , a famous Roman aqueduct bridge built in the first century CE over the Gardon River, to carry water over 50km to the Roman colony of Nîmes, then called Nemausus.

35 minutes from Nimes

Visitors entering Sommières cross the Vidourle River using an old Roman bridge, the subject of many a tourist photograph. This quaint town has ancient origins seen in its medieval castles and ruined walls.

Be sure to visit the Château de Sommières , the beautiful Eglise Saint Pons church, and the Courtin Chocolatier for a tasty souvenir.

Montpellier

45 minutes from Sommières

Southwest of Sommières is Montpellier, a town that is a mix between modernity and historic charm. Visit the Promenade de Peyrou, the highest part of Montpellier. Other noteworthy sites are the Cathedrale St. Pierre and the arch of Porte du Peyrou.

For dinner, head to Le Réfectoire or Restaurant Ébullition for a Michelin-star experience. Bourbon lovers should also not miss Le Pat’Daniel’s .

Montpellier To Narbonne

The second last day of the road trip will take you further west along the coast of southern France into the Haut-Languedoc. The day includes a 3 hour drive packed with a splendid port, beautiful gardens, and architectural wonders.

Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert

45 minutes from Montpellier

While on the A750, stop at Domaine Croix de Saint-Privat à Aniane for good affordable wine right from the vineyard. This gem is located just over 22 miles from the center of Montpellier.

Stop at Le Pont Du Diable or Devil’s Bridge on the way, for a spot of wild swimming or paddle boarding in the crystal clear Herault River.

Probably the only stop in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert that is an absolute must is visiting the abbey, the Abbaye de Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert. Forget pictures; this marvel must be experienced in person to take in all its splendor. 

Just up the D4 northbound is the spectacular Gorges d’Heric. Criss-crossing the gushing river Orb as you head north, you’ll pass through small villages where you should stop and visit a cellar or two. Once at the gorge, you can follow the river along the gorge, where you’ll find enormous boulders, small sandy beaches and deep pools of crystal-clear water in which to cool off.

1 hour from Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert

Sète might not be one of the more popular towns in France, but it is worth a stop. Overlooking the Etang de Thau, a string of lagoons that stretch along the French coast from the Rhône River to the foothills of the glorious Pyrenees mountains, Sete boasts a beautiful old port, and the tradition of jousting which makes this town so unique. There is even an annual festival in Sète that celebrates this pastime.

For lunch on an open terrace with a view, dine at L’Essentiel or La Consigne for excellent local cuisine, especially locally caught seafood like squid, mussels and octopus.

45 minutes from Sète

Take a break 36 miles outside of Sète at the Aire de Loupian – Georges Brass rest stop on the A9, an intriguing space with artistic sculptures.

Once in Béziers, it’s a quick stop to explore the Museum du Biterrois to learn more about the town’s history and the Bishops’ Garden , which offers stunning views of the Orb plain.

If you have time, visit the famous Les Neuf Écluses de Fonseranes , the famous staircase of nine locks on the Canal du Midi, a fantastic feat of engineering and fascinating to watch in action.

35 minutes from Beziers

Narbonne is a treasure trove for architecture enthusiasts, with the Archbishop’s Palace, the Fontfroide Abbey, and Gilles Aycelin Donjon to admire. Within the Archbishop’s Palace, you can visit the new Archaeology Museum , which contains artifacts from Narbonne’s medieval, ancient and prehistoric past.

Treat yourself to dinner at Brasserie du Moulin or Bistro Bourget for delicious French cuisine.

Narbonne To Toulouse

The final day of the south France itinerary requires only 2 hours of driving. It has two stops, leaving travelers time to arrive at Toulouse in good time to catch a flight or take a full day for sightseeing.

Carcassonne

45 minutes from Narbonne

Upon arrival in La Cité, it will feel like one is transported 2,500 years back! Visitors should explore the medieval citadel of Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take an hour to admire the fortifications, museum, and basilica or book our recommended small group Carcassonne guided tour .

1 hour 15 minutes from Carcassonne

Keep traveling on the A61 for about 39 miles and stop at Écluse de Gardouch, a quaint little village to stretch one’s legs, taking a walk along the canal. Afterwards, head onwards to Toulouse.

What to do there will depend on your travel itinerary: either continue traveling 15 minutes northwest toward Toulouse Airport or check into your hotel and explore the city. 

Some famous tourist sites include the Japanese Gardens, Science Museum, and the beautiful basilica. If time is plenty, why not take a private walking tour with a local guide ?

Toulouse also has many dining options, including Michelin-star fine dining at Michel Sarran and Troika Royal for something out of the norm.

Driving in France Tips

Road trips in France are usually pleasurable, thanks to their extensive and well-maintained autoroute network, and generally good local roads. French drivers can be impatient and are dreadful tailgaters and really, really dislike being overtaken, but, c’est la vie , this is France!

Whether you’re traveling in your own car, touring France in a motorhome or flying in and renting a car, you need to follow these rules when you drive and travel in France;

• You must have at least three months remaining on your passport (issued in the past ten years) at your intended date of departure from France.
• You must have at least 3rd party insurance for your vehicle.
• Citizens of non-EU third countries may require an International Driving Permit for driving in Europe . You can check whether you need an IDP here .
• You must carry at least one reflective jacket within the passenger compartment of your vehicle and must put it on before you get out in an emergency or breakdown situation. You must also carry a warning triangle.
• You may require a Crit’Air sticker which is placed in the windscreen of your vehicle to provide a visible way to identify the level of emissions produced. If you’re renting a vehicle, the Crit’Air sticker should already be on display in the windscreen. Find out more and purchase Crit’Air stickers from the official certificat-air.gouv.fr website.
• On 1 November 2021 the Loi Montage II or ‘mountain law II’ came into force in 48 French mountainous departments within the Alpes, Massif Central, Jura, Pyrénées, and Vosges regions. Anyone travelling in a car or motorhome or through one of these areas between 1 November and 31 March will be obliged to fit four approved winter tyres or carry at least two snow chains or socks in the vehicle.
• French motorways are privately managed and you’re not allowed to request your own assistance company to attend to you if you break down. If you do break down use the orange emergency telephones that are situated every 2km along French motorways to call the police or the official breakdown service operating in that area or dial the emergency services on 112. You will be towed to a safe designated area where you can make onward arrangements for your own breakdown insurer to assist you if you have it. Otherwise, the towing company will be able to provide support or signpost you. 
• You do not need to carry a breathalyser, the law requiring that you do has been repealed.

5 top road trips to see the best of France

Anna Richards has travelled France researching Lonely Planet's latest guidebook . Here she shared her favourite road trips to get you inspired.

The freedom of the open road in France is even more accessible for British travellers who can arrive with their own car, via the ferry or Eurotunnel. And as the home of the original motorist’s guide, the Michelin Guide, it seems only fitting to explore it on four wheels. 

All of the below routes avoid paying tolls (for more information on toll roads, see the tips at the end) – taking you along smaller, more picturesque, routes into the heart of the French countryside.

Here are the five best road trips for exploring France.

1. Mont St-Michel to Étretat

Best for road trip for coast crawling

Mont-St-Michel to Étretat: 286 km (460 miles), allow three days.

The 9th century tidal abbey of Mont-St-Michel is one of the most famous sights in the country, and still the residence of some 33 monks and nuns. Twice a day, when the tide swirls in over the mysterious mud flats and quicksand, the causeway is the only thing which links Mont-St-Michel to the mainland. From Mont-St-Michel, drive for half an hour to Avranches and climb up to the top of the château, for a view which extends all the way to Mont-St-Michel. A further 90 km (55 miles) on the A84 and D572 takes you to Bayeux, home of the famous tapestry woven after 1066, showing the French conquest of England over 68 metres of intricately woven fabric. Skirt around Caen to reach Deauville (1½ hours), where the boardwalk hugging the beach has metal stars set into the floor in homage to 200 stars of the silver screen who have attended the American Film Festival, which Deauville hosts at the end of each summer. A final couple of hours driving takes you to Étretat, where the rocks have eroded to form an ocean sculpture garden of sea arches and needles. They were immortalised many times by Monet, who would row out to paint in solitude. 

Local tip: Parking at Mont-St-Michel and Étretat is difficult and expensive. Consider parking further out and walking to reach your destination.

2. The Loing Valley

Best road trip for history buffs

Fontainebleau to Montargis: 50 km (31 miles), allow for a day 

The chateau of Fontainebleau , formerly a hunting lodge, became the country home of the French royals under Louis IX in the 13th century, and has 130 hectares of grounds. Curiously enough for a country with so many mountain ranges, one of the first marked hiking trails in the country was in Fontainebleau, planned by a Napoleonic army veteran, Claude-François Denecourt, in 1842. The first part of the journey, south towards Nemours for 20 minutes (D607), goes through Gâtinais-Français Regional Park, criss-crossed with waterways and pint-sized villages.

Keep following the D607 south to reach Souppes-sur-Loing, a riverside town with the remnants of a 12th century monastery. Ten minutes along the étangs (lagoons) to reach Fontenay-sur-Loing is exceptionally scenic. Fontenay-sur-Loing itself is a sleepy little place with little to make it worth lingering, so continue to the picture-perfect town of Montargis (13km; 8 miles) to finish your trip, where half-timber houses overhang the canals.

Planning tip: The château of Fontainebleau is open daily except Tuesdays, but summer is the best time to visit, when additional activities like boat cruises on the lake and hot-air balloon rides are added onto the agenda.

3. A loop through Hérault

Best road trip for coastal views without the crowds

Round trip from Sète: 208km (129 miles), allow for three days

The little city of Sète sits on a tightrope-thin stretch of land between the 7,500 hectare saltwater Étang de Thau and the Mediterranean Sea. Thriving and in parts extremely modern in appearance, traditions still hold strong here. Among the most famous is Sète’s five-day water jousting festival each August. From Sète, a drive of 47km (29 miles) along the D2 and D28 takes you to Béziers , a city first established by the Romans and an important stop on the first road the Romans built through France, the Via Domitia.

From Béziers, head to Haut-Languedoc Regional Park, where the foliage is dense, like tight curls, and historic little villages look glued to the hillside. Two of the prettiest are Roquebrun and Vieussan. A further 50km (31 miles) east of the latter on the D908 is an otherworldly, red rock lake. Lac du Salagou, an artificial reservoir, owes the rusty colour of its soil to iron oxide in the sandstone. From here, drive 30km (18 miles) to Pézenas, former home of France’s most famous playwright, Molière. Stop at Bouzigues on the way back and don a snorkel if conditions are favourable, you may see seahorses. It’s just 15 minutes from here back to Sète. 

Planning tip: Aim to arrive in Pézenas on a Saturday to coincide with their weekly market.

4. Alpine lakes and valleys loop

Best road trip for off-the-scale nature

Round trip from Grenoble, 324 km (201 miles), five days recommended

Leave Grenoble and take the D1091 to reach the Serre Chevalier valley. It’s worth spending at least a day, possibly more, to explore Serre Chevalier. During the winter, 250km (155 miles) of ski slopes delight amateurs and die-hard ski fans alike. The historic fortified city of Briançon isn’t just a base for hikers and skiers; there’s a plethora of art galleries here too. 

From Briançon, head south on the N94 to reach the Lac de Serre-Ponçon. Hire a paddleboard and paddle out to the island chapel of Saint-Michel, the only building to have survived the flooding of the valley to create the reservoir, thanks to its elevated position. Two hours northwest is Lac de Monteynard-Avignonet, where the water positively glows, sandwiched between the Écrins National Park on one side and the softer, but no less spectacular, cliffs of Vercors Regional Park to the other. Himalayan hanging bridges are suspended across the lake, which sway like wind through the trees as you cross them. From here, a final 50km (31 miles) takes you back to Grenoble. 

Planning tip: Tackle this route in summer. If travelling in winter, make sure that you have snow tyres or carry snow chains.

5. The Massif Central

Best road trip for cheese and hiking

Clermont-Ferrand to Aurillac; 196km (122 miles), three to four days

Clermont-Ferrand is an austere-looking city, the black, volcanic stone buildings making it appear extra gothic. It’s 28km (17 miles; D942) to Orcival, and its impressive 12th century basilica. A further 18km (11 miles) south is Mont-Dore, a ski station whose curiously colourful architecture looks like a Victorian seaside resort. In summer, people come to hike Puy de Sancy, the highest of the extinct volcanoes. From Puy de Sancy, drive south for 85km (52 miles) to Murat, a town which looks like a medieval film set, and has been used as such many times. Strap your hiking boots on again and drive the 22km (13 miles) to Puy Mary, to hike the volcano ridge trail. Your trip finishes in sleepy little Aurillac, full of cheese shops.

Planning trip: Much of this route follows the Auvergne Cheese Route, and there are many farms to stock up on Salers, Saint Nectaire, Cantal, Auvergne Blue and Fourme d’Ambert. If you’d like to visit the farms it’s best to call in advance. Be aware that many do not speak English.

Top tips for road-tripping around France

Be wary of toll roads (péages). They’ll get you to where you want to go faster (the speed limit is 130 km per hour), but tolls often cost as much (or more) than fuel – and it goes without seeing that the fast road is not the most scenic. Fuel from service stations along the highway is also considerably more expensive than elsewhere. 

One way to reduce costs is by taking carpooling passengers to reduce the cost. The lift-sharing platform blablacar.fr is widely used in France. Use viamichelin.fr to calculate the cost of your trip with tolls and fuel.

How to create a great road trip playlist with sing-along songs!

The window wound down, the stereo cranked up and some awesome tunes you can sing along to; perfection, right? But if you’re anything like us, your phone/iPod is a random mix of all sorts of music- including a Christmas album or 7.

That’s why a road trip playlist is so important- you don’t have to worry if the next tune will be great, you already know it will be!

I’ll be honest- there was some…. let’s call it “discussion”… over the best travel songs to include on this list. My husband prefers classic rock for driving songs. I like songs you can sing along with in the car and songs to drive fast too (NEVER above the speed limit though… right?!)

Wow that is a great list. You have a few I had forgotten. Very complete list of all music genre. That is the only problem I have with things like Sirrus and XM you have to select only one type. I love Pandora but as you mentioned DATA, DATA, so Ipod it is for roadtrips.

4. Champagne Road Trip

• Duration: 4 days
• Suggested route: Paris –Reims – Epernay – Troyes – Provins

On day one, drive from Paris to Reims. On the way, do a short stop at  La Ferté sous Jouarre . This small town, and more precisely, its abbey, hosts two wonderful Merovingian crypts from the 7th century listed as Historical Monuments.

Dedicate the rest of the day to exploring Reims , the capital of Champagne, with many historical gems to visit. The city is well known for its Gothic cathedral, the coronation place for most of the Kings of France. Take a day to explore the medieval Cité de Carcassonne , one of the most important Cathar sites and one of the main targets during the first Cathar Crusade in 1209.

Day 2 of this road trip France visits the charming Medieval town of Mirepoix , and Château de Monségur , where the last Cathars who did not surrender were burnt alive. Spend the night at the  Logis Auberge du Vigneron , in Cucugnan , with fabulous views of the surrounding valley.

On day 3, visit Château de Peyrepertuse and Château de Quéribus , two fabulous hilltop fortresses and Cathar sites. Then drive to Fontjoncouse , a gorgeous oh-so typical French village in the heart of the Aude department conveniently located close to the next Cathar sites. Book a room (or a full cottage) for one night at   Le Petit Clos , a charming guesthouse with a swimming pool, terrace, and garden.

The next day of this roadtrip France visits Fontfroide Abbey and the Medieval village of Lagrasse with the Benedictine Abbey of St Mary of Orbieu . Both abbeys had an important role in the Cathar crusades, and they are interesting to visit.

On the last day of this Cathar road trip, drive to Minerve, a pretty medieval village where you can see a replica of one of the catapults used by the Crusaders. Then, visit Châteaux de Lastours , one of the best castles in Southern France , before driving back to Carcassonne. 6. Route des Grands Crus, Bourgogne

On day 3, visit the Château Clos de Vougeot , a must of any Burgundy wine route. In the 14th century, the monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux built the first walls separating vineyards, known as  clos , contributing like this to the promotion of the wines of the region. Clos de Vougeot was the first clos built by the monks, and the visit reveals the winemaking genius of the monks in the Middle Ages.

In the afternoon, drive to Gevrey-Chambertin , a small village home to nine Burgundy Grands Crus, perfect for a stroll and some wine tastings. Then, drive to Dijon, where you will spend one night. The  Grand Hotel La Cloche Dijon  is a good option, conveniently located close to all the main attractions.

On the last day of this French road trip, visit Dijon , the historical capital of Burgundy. Dijon was home to the Dukes of Burgundy, and as such, it has an interesting cultural and architectural heritage. 7. Road Trip through the Jura, Eastern France

Then drive to Château-Chalon , another pretty village in the Jura, where you are going to spend the night. Les Relais des Abbesses is a beautiful, historical property in the heart of the village, and it has a terrasse with magnificent views over the Jurassic plateau.

Spend the morning of the third day visiting Château-Chalon , one of the villages with the label ‘most beautiful villages in France.’ In the afternoon, head to Dole, which was the capital of the County of Burgundy until its annexation to the Kingdom of France.

Dole is a picturesque city bordered by the Doubs River, a city of canals and interesting architecture from the 16th century. Dole’s Old Town is a confusion of alleyways edged by Renaissance homes with turrets and courtyards. 8. Loire Valley Road Trip from Nantes

On the return to Nantes Airport, break up the more than 3-hour drive with a stop in Angers to see the Apocalypse Tapestries at Château d’Angers . 9. West Coast of France Road Trip

10. Gorges du Verdon Road Trip

Did you know that there was a Grand Canyon in France? Yep. Well, it’s not as big as the one in the US, but when you get there, you’ll have the same feeling. It’s called the Gorges du Verdon , and it’s a stunning rocky landscape with towering cliffs, where a turquoise-green river meanders at the bottom.

To start this Gorges du Verdon road trip , you can drive from Aix-en-Provence or any nearby major cities: Marseille, Nice, or even Cannes. The trip takes three days to complete, with one day in Valensole and the lavender fields, one day driving around the different lakes, and one day driving the epic road on top of the Gorges du Verdon. Here are the major stops on this trip:

– Valensole is famous for its lavender fields , which bloom from the end of June to the end of July. Valensole is a cute little village where you can spend the night after exploring the fields around.

– Esparron de Verdon , and Lac Quinson de Verdon , are two small lakes with absolutely no crowds. Lac Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon is the main lake in the area and the perfect place to stop for a while and relax on the beach.

– Gorges du Verdon is the main attraction around here, France’s Grand Canyon. Drive on top of the gorges on an epic scenic route ( Route des Crêtes ), and enjoy one of the most beautiful landscapes in France.

11. Gorges du Tarn Road Trip

• Suggested route: Millau – La Malène – Florac

Les Gorges du Tarn is another beautiful south of France road trip. This 4-day itinerary will take you through The Causses, and The Cévennes , a region that offers the ultimate scenery for an amazing French road trip, from deep gorges with hairpin bends to wide-open pastoral landscapes. Because of its uniqueness, the region has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List.

This road trip in France starts and ends in Millau . On the first day, visit the world’s tallest bridge – Millau Viaduct –, and the tiny village of Payre . Stay the first night in Millau and use the evening to explore this beautiful Medieval city. Hotel des Causses in Millau is comfortable, central, and has an on-site restaurant.

The next day head to the heart of the Gorges du Tarn . The road (D809, D907, and D907bis) follows the bends of the River Tarn, which has cut deeply into the cliffs forming this stunning canyon. You’ll be passing through lots of lovely villages along the Tarn.

At Les Vignes, take the D46 road to Point Sublime , from where you will have the most breathtaking view over the canyon. Go back to Les Vignes and follow the road towards La Malène . On the way, stop at Pas de Soucy for some more amazing views.

You can stay the second night at La Malène. The Hotel Le Manoir de Montesquiou is a beautiful and historical building with a great location in the middle of the Gorge area.

On day 3, head to Sainte-Enimie – a postcard beautiful village. On the way, you can stop at Saint-Chélly-du-Tarn . After Sainte-Enimie, continue to Florac , where you can spend the third night. Grand Hotel du Parc has a perfect and relaxing setting in the Cévennes National Park.

The next day take D16 and D63 to the famous cave Aven Armand. You’ll be crossing Causse Méjean , a plateau with a totally different landscape from the canyons. After the cave, stop at the nearby Medieval Farm to learn more about the local traditions in this area ( Ferme Caussenarde d’Autrefois ).

Afterward, continue to Meyrueis on D986. When you arrive at Meyrueis, take D996 to Le Rozier. Follow the road along the canyon on La Jonte River – Gorges de la Jonte . Stop at Le Rozier and Peyrelau – two lovely places where the La Jonte River flows into the Tarn River. Afterward, continue to Millau, the end of this road trip.

12. French Riviera Road Trip

One of the best starting points for this France road trip along the Côte d’Azur is Cannes , a city filled with glitz and glamour that will make you feel as though you’ve arrived in the French Riviera in style! Book one night or two in the Hotel Croisette Beach Cannes soaking up the atmosphere and visiting Cannes’ top sights before moving on towards Nice.

On your way to Nice, you might want to stop off in Antibes . This is a lovely place to unwind after the buzz of Cannes, and you can enjoy a relaxing lunch and spend your afternoon at the Picasso Museum . If you want to hike the Cap d’Antibes and spend an extra day on the beach, consider staying a night in Antibes itself.

Next, you’ll drive to Nice , where you can explore the city’s narrow streets, bustling markets, and ochre-colored architecture. For your stay in Nice, book at Hotel Locarno , which has an excellent location 200 m from the beach and offers the best breakfast ever.

After spending 2 days in Nice and around, you can drive on to Monaco , stopping off at the medieval village of Eze and perhaps Villefranche-sur-Mer . You can then choose whether you want to stay in Monaco for a chic casino break or move on to Menton , a small foodie town on the French /Italian border.

The distances between the destinations are relatively short, so you can easily tick off two places in one day. We would suggest spending at least seven days on this French Riviera road trip, but of course, you can spend much longer delving into this stunning French region.

Kids and adults gather at a Memorial Day parade to honor and celebrate veterans in South Portland. Sofia Aldinio/ Staff Photographer

BATH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at 200 Congress Ave. and concludes at Library Park and will be followed by a wreath-laying service at 11 a.m.

BERWICK 11 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at Berwick Town Hall/Sullivan Square and proceeds to Lord’s Cemetery by way of Wilson and Allen streets. After a ceremony there, the parade will continue down Saw Mill Hill Street with a pause at the Somersworth-Berwick Bridge for a brief memorial service for those lost at sea. The parade ends at Sullivan Square with a memorial service honoring area veterans.

BIDDEFORD-SACO Opening ceremony at 9:55 a.m. Monday at Saco City Hall. Parade starts at 10 a.m. from Saco City Hall and proceeds along Main Street and down York Hill into Biddeford, continues along Main Street, onto Alfred Street and finishes at Veteran’s Memorial Park with a closing ceremony at 10:45 a.m.

BRUNSWICK-TOPSHAM 9 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from Topsham Town Hall, pauses for observances while crossing the Brunswick-Topsham bridge, and concludes at the Brunswick Mall.

CAPE ELIZABETH 9 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at the middle school parking lot, turns right on Scott Dyer Road, right onto Route 77 and ends at the village green adjacent to the town hall. A brief ceremony and laying of the wreath will be held at the Village Green after the parade.

CUMBERLAND 8 a.m. Monday. Kids run at Greely High School followed by 5K Run and Remember race at 8:30 a.m. Parade starts at 10 a.m. at Mabel I. Wilson School and ends at the veterans’ monument in Moss Side Cemetery in Cumberland Center, where a ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. Advertisement

FALMOUTH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from 65 Depot Road (Falmouth American Legion) to Pine Grove Park, where a ceremony will be held.

FREEPORT 9:30 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from Holbrook Street, heads north on Main and makes a right onto School Street, then right onto Park Street, ending in Memorial Park. There will be a small ceremony in Memorial Park starting at 10 a.m.

GORHAM 11 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Village School (12 Robie St.) and ends at Eastern Cemetery on Johnson Road.

GRAY 11:30 a.m. Monday. Parade leaves the Russell School (8 Gray Park), proceeds to Shaker Road and continues to the Soldiers Monument at the intersection of Routes 26 and 3 for a wreath-laying ceremony. Parade continues north to the American Legion Post (15 Lewiston Road) for a closing ceremony.

LYMAN 1 p.m. Monday. Parade starts at Waterhouse Road/Mill Pond in Goodwins Mills and ends at the Lyman Town Hall on South Waterboro Road.

NEW GLOUCESTER 9 a.m. Monday. Parade leaves from Memorial Elementary School (86 Intervale Road) and heads down Intervale Road to Route 100/202 to Veterans Park for a memorial service. The parade will reconvene and go down Peacock Hill Road, then take a left on Gilmore Road. Advertisement

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 1 p.m. Monday. Parade starts at the corner of Ballpark Way and E. Emerson Cumming Boulevard and proceeds down Saco Avenue, Old Orchard Beach Street to First Street and ends at Veteran’s Memorial Park.

PORTLAND 2 p.m. Monday. The procession starts at Longfellow School (432 Stevens Ave.) and ends at Evergreen Cemetery for a commemoration ceremony.

SANFORD 10 a.m. Monday. The parade starts at the Sanford Armory (88 William Oscar Emery Drive), proceeds up Gowen Park Drive and ends at Central Park.

SCARBOROUGH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Scarborough High School, turns onto Route 114 and then Route 1, past town offices to the Maine Veterans Home and concludes with a ceremony there.

SOUTH PORTLAND 10:30 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Southern Maine Community College parking lot, proceeds down Broadway to the Veterans Monument for a short Memorial Day recognition service.

WELLS 9 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Wells High School (200 Sanford Road) and proceeds to Ocean View Cemetery for a ceremony and musical performances. Advertisement

WESTBROOK 10 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds down Main Street and will be followed by a ceremony in Riverbank Park.

WINDHAM 9 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Windham Town Hall and proceeds onto Route 202 toward Windham High School. At 10 a.m., there will be a ceremony in front of Windham’s Veterans Memorial Flagpole at Windham High School.

YARMOUTH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade leaves from Yarmouth High School (286 West Elm St.) and proceeds to the Memorial Green at Town Hall for a ceremony.

YORK 10 a.m. Monday. Parade starts near St. Christopher’s Church (4 Barrell Lane) and proceeds down York Street to York Town Hall.
