How Delta made itself America’s luxury airline — and what United wants to do about it

Delta Air Lines  is the country’s most profitable airline. CEO Ed Bastian’s challenge is to make sure his carrier stays on top.

The airline’s unit revenue, the amount it brings in for every seat it flies one mile,  outpaced  its competitors’ last year. Delta’s share price has soared almost 23% in 2024, more than any rival in the rocky airline   sector, in a rally that’s outdone the  S&P 500 ′s. It expects free cash flow to rise as much as 50% this year to between $3 billion and 4 billion, and is eyeing a return to an investment-grade credit rating. And a stat any traveler would appreciate: Delta came in first in punctuality last year, with more than 83% arriving on-time, according to the Transportation Department.

Rival  United Airlines  — second to Delta in net profit margins — is circling. It says it could  grow   profits  even more this year.

“Knowing that there’s someone that thinks that they can take that mantle from us, that keeps us on our toes and keeps us continuing to drive hard,” Bastian told CNBC.

Delta has fashioned itself America’s premium airline. It has won over hordes of splurging travelers, many of them carrying  American Express  cards, Delta’s cash cow of a partner that generated almost $7 billion for the airline last year. Sales growth of Delta’s roomier and more expensive seats continues to outpace revenue from standard coach.

As they vie for luxury flyers, both Delta and United have  added more high-end seating  to their planes to cater to travelers who deem worthwhile a $300 surcharge for a few inches of extra legroom on a cross-country round trip, or 10 times as much for a seat in business class.

Bastian, a former auditor who said he took his first flight at age 25 for a business trip (New York to Chicago), is in charge of ensuring Delta lives up to its brand luster.

On Wednesday,  Delta will take its next shot  in the battle for high-spending flyers when it opens its newest,  highest tier of airport lounge  at John F. Kennedy International Airport for passengers in its Delta One cabin, its top product that features lie-flat beds for longer flights.

At more than 39,000 square feet it will be Delta’s largest lounge, accented with pillows that have iconic zig-zag motif of Italian fashion house Missoni, its new amenity kit partner. It features complementary spa treatments, like ice globes and serum for jet-lagged eyes, along with showers, a full restaurant, and a deck overlooking the airfield, in a bet that travelers’ desire to treat themselves is here to stay.

Delta is taking a page from the playbooks of United and  American , which  already dedicate their swankiest lounges  to customers flying in long-haul business class. Delta plans to open Delta One lounges in Boston and Los Angeles later this year, and is studying airports where it could open others.

“The thing with this industry is no good idea goes uncopied,” said Raymond James airline analyst Savanthi Syth.

Meanwhile, United is placing huge orders for new  Boeing  and Airbus planes and remodeling hundreds of narrow-body cabins that feature seatback screens and bluetooth technology, a strategy that aims to cater to travelers in international business class or on the cheapest basic economy tickets.

“We haven’t exactly achieved the No. 1 profitability status in the industry, but I know we’re on our way,” United’s Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said in an interview last month. “If we continue to invest in our customers through great service and great products and great network, we know that will feed upon itself and it’ll help us achieve the financial results that we’re looking for.”

The airlines and American are approaching their 100th birthdays, and are trying to stay ahead — if not drive — shifting travel demand and still turn a profit.

United is adding to the more than 300 airports it serves. Figuring out the next hot destination is “part art” and “part science,” said Patrick Quayle, its head of network planning. The airline’s sprawling global network makes United the biggest U.S. airline by capacity and it recently launched service to places like Dubrovnik, Croatia and Amman, Jordan.

Quayle pointed to United’s addition of Cape Town, South Africa, which it first announced before the pandemic, as a success.

“Another airline has subsequently copied us. ... I might want to add based in Atlanta,” he said, alluding to Delta’s home city.

The latest changes come at a difficult time for a lot U.S. airlines. Labor and other costs swelled after the pandemic, eating into margins despite  record numbers of travelers . Added capacity in the U.S. market has forced carriers to  discount fares  in off-peak travel periods.

It’s tricky, and expensive, to change course. Even  Southwest Airlines  is facing  investor pressure  to add things like premium seating or  seat assignments  as its simple business model shows signs of age.

Meanwhile, U.S. consumers are  growing more selective : Some corporate leaders have lamented a spending pullback while others, like Delta’s CEO, are saying the opposite. Americans are still digging into the so-called experiences economy, and paying for more comfort along the way, according to Bastian.

“They may not be buying that new EV or that that new house, but they’re saying we’re going to go out and experience the world and invest in that experience,” he said. “And that’s why you see it happening in high-end concerts, high-end hospitality.”

‘Brick by brick’

When the U.S. was careening toward recession almost two decades ago, Delta’s leaders made a correct bet that travelers would eventually pay more to fly on its jets.

Delta was emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2007, which other U.S. carriers found themselves in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Former CEO Richard Anderson said the airline had to start with basics: Stop losing bags. Make sure flights didn’t get canceled and arrived on time. Clean up the cabins.

“It was about building the operation brick by brick,” said Anderson, who handed the reins to Delta’s former president, Bastian, in 2016. “It didn’t matter what you did with AmEx. If the flight canceled, you ruined your brand.”

Delta took better care to avoid maintenance problems. It also started ferrying planes to airports to avoid cancellations if a replacement aircraft was needed.

And the carrier tried to clean up its image, hiring a marketing firm that advised former President Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Anderson said the airline needed to be consistent and not fly its mix of paint jobs and cabin interiors. It faced fresh competition from low-cost airlines like a then-spritely upstart out of Queens, N.Y. called  JetBlue Airways . Delta and United had both launched their own low-cost subsidiaries, but they discontinued them.

Delta executives knew they needed a brand to match if they were going to command a premium over competitors.

“One of the things about being a premium product is consistency, consistency in policy, consistency in appearance,” said Anderson. “If you got on a flight in Tokyo we wanted you to feel like you were home.”

After the string of changes, Delta’s performance improved. Corporate business travel contracts helped boost profits and still do, as business travel returns post-pandemic.

Delta had a key advantage over competitors. After it came out of bankruptcy, it merged with Northwest Airlines in 2008, allowing it to stabilize and expand around the world while other carriers floundered. The rest of the industry spent much of the next decade recovering from bankruptcies and a subsequent musical chairs of mergers that  left four big carriers in control of about three-quarters of the U.S. domestic market . Delta’s rivals were years behind the carrier on integrating their merged staff, operations, networks and fleets.

Bastian said the carrier’s focus on reliability has made life easier for not just its customers, but also its employees.

“They’re not having to explain for a cancellation or mishandled luggage,” he said. “They have time to serve rather than to apologize.”

Delta is also unique as the least unionized of the major U.S. airlines, at about 20%. In April, as campaigns were underway to organize its flight attendants and other workers, it again  raised worker pay . Flight attendants for Delta’s regional carrier Endeavor, which are unionized, have recently demanded compensation on par with the carrier’s mainline flight attendants.

Time to remodel

After Delta got the basics down, Bastian, 67, who joined Delta in 1998, said it was time for the airline to focus on more ambitious projects.

“You had the liberty to start investing in premium,” he said. “You started to figure out how to to make first class more available to customers.”

It has expanded in big-spending New York and Los Angeles, the country’s two largest air travel markets by revenue, according to aviation data firm OAG.

Delta also built up its host of global alliances, joint ventures and minority ownership stakes, giving it more reach. That includes its 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic, which already had a strong foothold in premium air travel and popular lounges.

“I think some of that heritage has made its way into the core of Delta,” said Virgin Atlantic’s CEO Shai Weiss. “I’m not suggesting we are the messiah for Delta, but there is no surprise that Delta and Virgin Atlantic see eye-to-eye on many things.”

The vast majority of the more than 940 million people that flew on U.S. airlines last year fly in coach, and Delta has tried to make its flights more desirable travelers on all sections of the plane.

It remodeled old and dated terminals, and built out its network of luxury airport lounges, which are tied to its lucrative credit card deal with American Express. It added seat-back televisions and better in-flight entertainment options, and in February 2023, it  announced  its long-awaited  free Wi-Fi  to customers enrolled in its SkyMiles frequent flyer program.

Delta has invested more than $12 billion to rebuild and update its U.S. hubs with soaring ceilings, new technology and in some lounges, a signature scent. (“It’s proprietary,” said Claude Roussel, who oversees Delta’s lounges, when asked what was in it.)

One of its latest efforts is its terminal and new Sky Club at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, alongside other airlines’ new terminals. A decade ago, then-Vice President Joe Biden famously said someone who was blindfolded and taken to that airport would think, “I must be in some third-world country.”

The airline faced big problems along the way like a dayslong system outage in 2016. And the worst of all: Covid-19. Like other airlines, Delta accepted billions in federal aid to weather the pandemic. The carrier successfully urged some  17,000 workers to take buyouts , hiring newer, lower-paid staff that lacked the experience of departed employees. Early in the process, Bastian said the newer workers gave the company a “juniority benefit.” The airline employed about 100,000 people in the U.S. as of the end of last year.

Delta and its competitors also pulled out of many small cities as the pandemic eased, isolating some smaller cities amid a shortage of regional jet pilots.

But international travel has proved resilient so far, as consumers show they are willing to shell out on experiences.

Luxury air travel? In the U.S.?

Luxury air travel and the United States didn’t go together for many years — and   might not still, if you ask well-heeled globetrotters.

U.S. airlines don’t offer on-board showers or  roomy suites  like those on the superjumbos flown by the likes of Etihad Airways or Singapore Airlines. But the U.S. air travel market, the world’s largest, has gotten a number of upgrades in recent years, and travelers have grown to expect the same convenience they get from their online shopping sites and ride-hailing and food-ordering apps.

“Delta’s not bougie by any stretch, but when your competitors don’t try very hard, it doesn’t take much,” said Henry Harteveldt, a former airline executive and founder of Atmosphere Research Group.

But as a rewards-credit card boom, strong consumer spending, social media envy and a wanderlust that predated the pandemic combined to boost demand, airlines executives were taking notice.

Delta’s sales from premium products are growing faster than revenue from its main coach cabin, a trend the airline forecasts will continue. Sales from Delta’s loyalty business, premium cabins and other streams comprise more than half of the carrier’s revenue.

Airlines have made big changes as they struggle to accommodate the big-spending travelers armed with elite status. Major carriers have all overhauled their frequent flyer programs to reward the biggest spenders instead of those that fly the most miles,   and made it harder to earn coveted elite status.

And at Delta and other airlines, many of the perks for luxury flyers come through lounges.

One of Delta’s Sky Clubs in Los Angeles International Airport offers a separate, dedicated security lane for customers flying Delta One, away from the masses at the airport. That feature will make it to the new JFK lounge later this year, a Delta spokesman said.

United and American Airlines have also worked to glam up and expand their airport lounges, access to which is a common perk with credit cards.

Delta  softened some restrictions  on Sky Club lounge access last year — which it made to end annoying and  unsightly long lines  to enter its exclusive airport real estate — after an uproar from customers.

'We’re constantly pushing each other'

Both Delta and United have issued sunny financial forecasts for this year, while many carriers are losing money or not pulling in similar profit margins.

“Watching [Delta] succeed, I became convinced that the product mattered and service mattered, and we have done that at United now,” United CEO Scott Kirby said at a JPMorgan industry conference in March.

And at an investor conference last month, he pointed to how the two are pulling away from the rest of the pack in profitability, particularly at big hubs.

United has made some big bets that paid off. It held onto its wide-body planes, when travel demand collapsed in the pandemic, and has benefitted from the surge in international travel.

With United on Delta’s tail, Bastian is trying to expand the airline’s reach. Bastian has attended the massive Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and has announced new partnerships with  Lyft  and  Starbucks  for its loyalty program.

He says he can’t mystery shop on other carriers because he’s too recognizable, but said his team flies on competitors regularly to see what they can improve.

“We don’t own the market rights to innovation in our industry,” he said.

When asked what Delta can improve, Bastian threw kudos back to United for its detailed messages to travelers when there’s a disruption.

“They’ve done some nice things with their app,” he said. “I still think ours is better, but ... they’ve done a nice job in terms their communications with their customers and how they manage trip interruptions.”

Bastian added: “We’re constantly pushing each other.”

5 things to know about airline travel alerts

If you've had trips booked to or from Florida or other destinations on the East Coast this past week, there's a good chance you've dealt with an airline travel alert as Hurricane Ian made its way north .

These alerts are common during hurricanes as well as winter snowstorms and particularly disruptive rounds of summer thunderstorms, and often cause airlines to relax their policies surrounding itinerary changes. While they may be called something different from airline to airline — travel notice, advisory, etc. — the idea behind these alerts issued by airlines is that they give passengers improved flexibility in getting on new flights, postponing travel or avoiding cities with bad weather.

In the past, I have used the leniency offered by travel alerts to depart for a trip 24 hours early to beat a snowstorm and to avoid a connecting city where stormy weather was in the forecast. I've also canceled a trip affected by an alert and claimed travel credits I was then able to use for a future flight.

Since airlines have generally relaxed many of their cancellation and change policies compared to before the pandemic, it's much easier to change a trip for free now, even under normal circumstances, than it was a few years ago. Today, how critical a travel alert is for your itinerary often depends on the type of ticket you booked, and how flexible it was to begin with.

At the same time, these alerts can give any traveler an early heads-up about impending bad weather, prompt you to change your itinerary and help with providing added flexibility. So, knowing what a travel alert means and how to take advantage of it will help you have the smoothest and cheapest trip possible — whether it's now, in a couple of days or months down the road.

A travel alert is a good heads-up

I often add my destination city — and even connecting cities — to my iPhone's weather app in the days before a flight, but a travel alert from an airline can likewise be a good way to notice if your itinerary could be affected by bad weather.

Say you're planning to fly from Providence, Rhode Island, to Cancun, Mexico, with a connection in Atlanta. If you get a winter weather travel alert for Atlanta, that might warn you that the likelihood of a delay or cancellation due to snow or ice is high.

These alerts are often based on weather forecasts. They can be an early sign that the weather somewhere along your itinerary is looking dicey and may cause your trip to be disrupted.

Anyone should be able to change a trip

The largest U.S. airlines have relaxed change fees in recent years, allowing passengers in most ticket classes to at least cancel and get flight credit for future trips, or change a ticket and, at worst, pay a fare difference. The big exception, though, is that under normal circumstances, basic economy passengers aboard American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines don't have trip-changing flexibility.

That's where a travel alert comes in: If your trip is affected by one of these advisories, even if you booked basic economy, you'll generally be allowed to change your trip with no fees.

There's frequently no need to stand in line or call the airline's customer service number. Check the airline's app ; you may be able to quickly rebook right there.

Rebook the same trip or get flight credit

Some of the specific terms will differ from airline to airline when it comes to travel alert policies, and can also change from one specific alert to the next. However, on the three domestic legacy carriers, travel alerts often carry two general rebooking options.

If your travels are affected by the alert, you can typically rebook your trip for the near future — often directly after the weather event subsides. If you decide on this option, you may be able to rebook the same trip without paying any difference in fare, as long as you travel in the same cabin. Read the alert carefully: It should specify what the acceptable travel dates are for this option. You'll probably have to book the same origin and destination cities you had planned on your original itinerary.

Alternatively, you can often claim flight credit to use in booking a future flight. This is a good choice if you no longer want to travel to the same destination, or if that specified window of dates no longer works for you. The airlines will typically give you an option to claim flight credits for the value of your ticket. American, Delta and United often allow you a year to use these credits. One thing to watch for: Double-check the alert to see whether you have a year from when you claim the credits or a year from when the original ticket was booked; you'd hate to see those credits expire .

On Southwest Airlines, you can always cancel and rebook your trip with future flight credit, even outside of a travel alert; in fact, certain higher-fare tickets are always eligible for refunds.

Again, these are just general rules of thumb, and specific policies can vary from airline to airline and from one weather event to the next. So, be sure to check the particular alert that applies to your trip.

Not covered by the alert? Keep checking

If you're not covered by a travel alert but are concerned about impending weather, keep checking the airline's website, the app and your email inbox. As weather forecasts change, cities included in travel alerts change.

For instance, as Hurricane Ian began to form as a tropical storm over the Caribbean, airlines issued alerts for destinations like Jamaica, Grand Cayman and some Florida airports. Carriers added dozens more airports to the alerts as Ian strengthened and then moved north, though.

Changing forecasts can also greatly affect the dates listed as part of an alert, so be sure to bookmark the alert page and watch for subsequent updates.

Don't forget about refunds

Keep in mind that whether a cancellation or delay is "the airline's fault," or not, affects reimbursement for things like an extra hotel night or a meal while you wait out a delay. Generally, during bad weather — which is a common cause of travel alerts — you won't be eligible for those types of reimbursements if your trip is disrupted.

On the other hand, if your flight is canceled or significantly delayed and you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a timely refund under U.S. Department of Transportation policies. That goes even for weather-related disruptions.

Keep in mind, if you take the airline up on its offer to rebook you, or accept credits for future travel, you're not eligible for a refund.

If the airline cancels your trip due to the weather though, and you'd like your money back rather than putting it toward future travel, asking the airline for a refund is certainly an option at your disposal.

Bottom line

Plenty of travelers have had to contend with travel alerts over the last couple of weeks as hurricane season threw a wrench in many fall travel plans. Knowing how these advisories work and how they can affect your trips can be crucial. This is especially true as Mother Nature is sure to intervene in itineraries in the form of snow and ice storms within the next few months.

7 Things to Know About Delta’s Flight Delay Compensation Policy

Flight delays are common and they may happen when you least expect them. When it comes to federal rules requiring U.S. airlines to compensate travelers for regular delays—there aren’t any.

However, each airline can outline its policies for handling these situations. For example, when flying with Delta Air Lines, in some cases, the airline may compensate inconvenienced travelers for expenses such as an overnight hotel stay for delays that stretch overnight.

If you’re planning to fly with Delta soon, you should study the brand’s policies to know what to expect regarding Delta flight delay compensation. Here are seven things you should know:

1. Airlines, including Delta, aren’t required to provide compensation for delays

The U.S. Department of Transportation outlines rules that airlines must follow. And the DOT states that airlines aren’t required to compensate for delays for flights departing the U.S.

Due to recent DOT proposals, consumer protections for flight cancellations may change this fall.

Each airline can outline policies for handling flight disruption and delays. So it’s a good idea to be familiar with your carrier’s policies before you head to the airport. Luckily, Delta is known for being generous, and in some cases, you may qualify for Delta flight delay compensation.

2. Delta will keep customers informed about delays

Delta is committed to making customers aware of known delays, cancellations and diversions. According to the airline’s customer commitment , the airline will alert customers within thirty minutes of becoming aware of the change of status of the flight.

This includes displaying updates on boarding gate signs, flight information display screens at airports, and on the Delta website and app. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on the status of your flight so you know what to expect.

3. Delta will rebook you on the next available flight

If you experience a delay, cancellation or other operational disruptions, Delta will automatically attempt to rebook you on the next available flight. The airline will also make every reasonable effort to reroute your checked baggage on the same flight.

4. If you’re inconvenienced overnight, Delta will provide hotel accommodations or offer compensation

Delta’s customer commitment outlines what the airline will do if delays, cancellations or irregular operations result in you being inconvenienced overnight.

The airline promises to do the following:

Delta will provide hotel accommodations at Delta contracted facilities based on availability if you are inconvenienced overnight while away from your home or destination due to a delay, misconnect or cancellation within Delta’s control.

If accommodations are unavailable, the airline will compensate you with a transportation credit commensurate in value with the contracted hotel rate up to $100.

5. You can ask for compensation

If you experience extended delays or other significant travel disruptions while flying with Delta, you should ask a staff member if they will offer compensation.

Keep the above policies in mind and see what the airline will do for you. The Transportation Department notes that even though airlines aren’t required to offer compensation, customers may ask for it.

If you end up paying for hotel or transit costs out of pocket due to a delay, keep your receipts and submit a claim through the airline. You can ask Delta Air Lines to reimburse you for these added travel costs. You may also consider asking for some Delta SkyMiles for the inconvenience.

If you don’t ask or aren’t offered compensation, additional food, hotel and transit costs will be your responsibility—making your trip much more expensive.

6. Travel insurance can protect you even more

If you’re worried about the potential for flight delays, you may want to invest in travel insurance.

With the right travel insurance policy, you may be able to file a claim for compensation for expenses resulting from travel delays and disruptions.

You can purchase coverage through a travel insurance agency. However, comparing travel insurance policies is a good idea before buying one.

You should also compare coverage details to ensure you get the right policy for your needs. There are several resources available that will allow you to compare policies from different insurance companies.

Travel insurance could be a beneficial backup resource since flight delay compensation isn’t guaranteed and requires additional steps.

7. Your travel card may already include travel insurance benefits

Delta planes involved in 4 incidents in one week

ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines jets encountered four major incidents within 48 hours last week, including one involving Atlanta's airport. 

In one incident, an engine on a flight from West Palm Beach to Boston caught fire shortly after takeoff. The engine was repaired, and the aircraft operated the same flight later that evening. 

That same day, a flight from Boston to San Francisco had to reverse course mid-flight due to a failed engine .

On Friday, a Delta plane flying from Atlanta to San Francisco lost its right-hand engine due to a loss of oil and was diverted to Salt Lake City. 

On the same day, a Delta flight from New York to Berlin experienced a problem with its anti-skid brakes but landed safely. No one was hurt in these incidents.

Airlines Issue Travel Alerts, Waivers as Storm Sweeps Across the U.S.

Delta, United, and American Airlines have all issued travel waivers.

A winter storm is making its way across the country, having a widespread effect on travel and flights ahead of the busy holiday season.

Several airlines have announced flight waivers as the storm sweeps across the United States, issuing alerts for everywhere from the Rockies to the Midwest , the East Coast , and the mid-Atlantic . 

The massive storm has already brought several tornadoes to the south, injuring people in Oklahoma and Texas and leaving people missing in Louisiana, The Associated Press reported . Other parts of the country from Montana to western Nebraska and Colorado were under blizzard warnings with as much as 2 feet possible in some areas.

The storm is then expected to move toward the Northeast, bringing dangerous ice storms to some areas along with rain, wind, and coastal hazards along the Eastern Seaboard, Accuweather reported . It will start as ice from the central Appalachians to part of the mid-Atlantic region into Thursday before eventually dropping snow from north-central and northeastern Pennsylvania all the way up to central Maine (a likely boon for East Coast ski mountains ). 

Delta Air Lines issued a travel waiver for the New York area for Thursday. Travelers who need to change their tickets can do so without paying a fare difference through Dec. 18.

Similarly, United Airlines issued a travel waiver for travel throughout the East Coast on Thursday and Friday as well as one for travel across the Midwest through Friday and another waiver for travel across the Rockies and Central U.S. through Thursday.

American Airlines also issued a travel alert for the Northeast for travel through Sunday.

On the roads, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation issued several restrictions on highways across the state, banning certain vehicles due to the likelihood of icy spots. 

“Many parts of PA are expecting winter weather tonight and tomorrow,” the department tweeted . “Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm, and check 511PA for updates on speed and vehicle restrictions.”

Knowing the right time to purchase a flight can cause some travel anxiety. Of course, you want to buy at just the right time so you can get the best deal — but how in the world are you supposed to know when that is?

Luckily there are lots of websites that can help you out. These websites and mobile apps can keep track of your flights and alert you when the price changes so that you have a better chance at making your purchase at just the right time. Some even offer predictions to help you narrow down the perfect time even more.

Here are our recommended websites and apps that offer flight deal alerts — they’re all easy to set up and they’re (mostly) free .

Kayak has been around for a while and it’s a great tool to use to search for flights, hotels, rental cars, and more . It’s also handy when it comes to setting up flight deal alerts.

To set up a flight alert, you will need to first create an account, then you can turn on flight tracking for any flight search in the upper left-hand corner of your search results window. You may also see a pop-up in the lower right-hand corner allowing you to set up a price alert for the flight you’re searching for.

You can manage all of your flight deal alerts on Kayak by going to the Notifications section of your account.

One of the cool things about Skyscanner alerts is that you can set them up going to and from multiple airports. This can be helpful if you are in a place like New York City where you have easy access to more than 1 airport. Just be sure to select Add Nearby Airports right under your departure and arrival cities.

The first thing you’ll notice is that you have to sign up with Facebook or an email address before you can access Airfarewatchdog .

Once you’re in, you’ll see that this site looks like a lot of other sites — you can search for deals on flights, hotels, and more.

When you’re logged in, setting up an alert can be done in 2 ways. First, you can search for a flight and then check the box to add that flight to your alerts.

Another option is to click on My Alerts > See My Alerts in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. From there you can set up alerts about flights from your home airport, alerts about specific routes, and even hotel alerts. This is also where you can manage all of your active flight deal alerts.

That’s it! Now, your alert will be saved in your account and you’ll receive an email when there are good deals available. You can also easily unsubscribe from your alerts or put them on hold.

Airfarewatchdog is not a booking site, so when you see a flight you want to book, you’ll be directed to an online travel agency (like Priceline or Expedia ) to finalize your booking.

Google Flights is a popular way to search for the best flight deals. The site is easy to use and offers lots of features that make searching for a flight a breeze.

It’s easy to set up flight deal alerts on Google Flights — all you need to do is enter your search criteria and click on the toggle button that says Track prices above your search results list to get price alerts and travel tips by email. You’ll be able to get alerts for your specific travel dates or for any dates.

If you’re logged into Google, your alerts will automatically go to your Gmail address, otherwise, you will need to enter an email address.

To check on all of your tracked flights, click on the 3-line icon in the upper left-hand corner. Then click on Tracked flight prices . Here you’ll be able to see a graph of the flight prices since the day you set your alert.

Hopper is a mobile app that gives predictions to help you find the best time to book your flight. It’s so confident in its app, it claims 95% accuracy up to 1 year in advance!

You can view flights on the Hopper app without signing in, but you must create an account to set up an alert.

To set up an alert you first need to search for the flight you are interested in. Then, you’ll be able to watch when prices drop and you’ll get an alert if Hopper predicts that they are going to rise.

To set up a price alert, open the Hopper app and select Flights. Then input your destination and dates of travel. Then you’ll see Hopper’s prediction along with a button that will turn on flight notifications. You have to enable push notifications on your phone to receive alerts .

Going uniquely monitors the best flight deals from your home airport. So instead of choosing a specific flight to follow, you’ll select your home airport. The site will also recommend nearby and hub airports to follow for even more deals.

There are both free and paid memberships. While the free version will send you deals, it doesn’t include serious savings like mistake fares and cheap business class flights. Paid memberships cost either $49 or $199 per year.

Once you have signed up, you’ll see deals from the airports you selected. Click on any deal for more information including how long Going thinks the deal will last.

Hot Tip: Keep in mind that some airlines (mostly “low-cost carriers”) don’t show up on these online travel agencies, metasearch engines, or flight deal sites. If you often fly these airlines (think Southwest or Allegiant ), you’ll want to keep an eye on those flights on their respective websites.

FareCompare is another site that will send you flight deal alerts. Unfortunately, you’ll also get emails with travel tips. If you prefer to keep your inbox clean, this might be a deal-breaker.

To set up a flight deal alert on FareCompare, just enter your travel details, and be sure to click the box right underneath that says Alert me when prices change . When you click Find Flights you’ll be prompted to enter your email address if you aren’t already signed in.

FareCompare is a flight search engine, so if you find a flight you like you’ll be transferred to an online travel agency to complete your booking.

No one ever really knows the exact right time to purchase a plane ticket to save the most money. Unfortunately, there’s not a tried and true formula for the best time to buy a flight, but there are lots of sites out there that can help narrow down the window. When you keep track of the flights you are after, you’ll be able to keep tabs on price trends which will help you decide a good time to buy.

You can set up a flight deal alert so you’ll be notified right away if there is a change in price, and some sites even alert you when they are predicting prices will rise or fall.

While setting up a flight deal alert isn’t a guarantee you’ll save money, it sure does help to make an educated guess on when to book your next flight.

'Like a roller coaster ride': Flight pummeled by hail makes emergency landing

A Delta Air Lines flight from Milan to New York was forced to make an emergency landing in Rome on Monday when the plane was pummeled by hail shortly after takeoff.

The aircraft took off from Milan Malpensa Airport at around 3:40 p.m. CEST, according to FlightAware . The aircraft had 215 passengers, three pilots and eight flight attendants onboard.

About 15 minutes into the flight, the plane started to experience “severe turbulence” and passengers heard a “noise we’ve never heard before,” a passenger from the flight told ABC News .

“And that was hail pounding on the roof of the plane,” he continued. “One passenger looked out the window and saw the wing shaking violently like it was gonna break off. Look, I saw flashes of light like lightning hitting the plane. And the turbulence was like being on a roller coaster ride dropping significantly.”

When the aircraft landed in Rome, all passengers deplaned normally and the plane underwent an evaluation, according to a Delta spokesperson.

The plane was damaged on its nose and body near the wings in “an apparent weather-related maintenance issue.”

“Delta apologizes for the delay to our customers' journey,” said the airline’s spokesperson. “The safety of our customers and crew is Delta's top priority.”

Europe has been experiencing severe weather this summer. After a record-breaking heatwave in Rome, towns in northern Italy were reportedly hit by hail as big as tennis balls.

A Delta plane made an emergency landing in Charlotte following a mechanical issue on Wednesday. The plane, which was flying in from Atlanta, successfully landed with its nose gear in the up position. No injuries were reported. 

A total of 96 customers, two pilots and three flight attendants were on board the 717 during the incident. Images taken by Chris Skotarczak, a passenger on the plane, show the plane on the tarmac and the nose touching the ground. The emergency slides at the front of the plane inflated.

In a tweet , Charlotte International Airport said the runway was closed and passengers were returned to the terminal. The airport said it is working to remove the faulty plane from the tarmac. 

In a statement to CBS News, a spokesperson for Delta said: "Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people. While this is a rare occurrence, Delta flight crews train extensively to safely manage through many scenarios and flight 1092 landed safely without reported injuries. We apologize to our customers for their experience." 

Skotarczak told the Associated Press he noticed the nose wheel wasn't in the plane's shadow. If he hadn't seen that or had been told to brace for landing, he wouldn't have known anything was wrong. 

"The pilot told us, 'We're going to land, we're going to hear a big thud and we're going to hear a lot of grinding,'" he said. "But it was almost smoother than a regular landing." 

He said passengers were told to leave everything on the plane and exited via the slides, which he called "the coolest thing."
