10 amazing fall foliage cruises you can take up the Hudson River this fall

Including brunch cruises with live music

Shaye Weaver

You don't need a car to see peak fall foliage in New York—you can take a boat! A number of NYC leaf-peeping boat cruises leave right from Manhattan and sail up the Hudson River, delivering your autumn dreams of gorgeous changing leaves.

RECOMMENDED: Where to see fall foliage in NYC

This October, we took the  Circle Line: Bear Mountain Full-Day Cruise , which as the name suggests, took us 50 miles north from Pier 83 to Bear Mountain and gave us three hours to hike trails and visit museums and its animal refuge before setting back down the river. It was a wonderful opportunity to escape the city sans car and train for the day and get some fresh air. Better yet, the cruise celebrates Oktoberfest with bratwurst, pork schnitzel, German potato salad, Prop & Peller Bavarian pretzels, and Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer and Warsteiner lager and a live Oompa band. It was a blast to get in party mode while anticipating our hike, seeing the beauty of the Palisades and Hudson Valley, listening to the captain point out landmarks and then relaxing on the way back home to NYC. The cruise goes on Saturdays and Sundays through October 31 and begins at $69 per person, which is really worth it.

Bear Mountain Cruise Circle Line

Here are some other fall foliage cruises you should consider this autumn:

Seastreak: NYC Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise

Leaving from West 39th Street at 11:30am, this three-and-a-half-hour cruise takes you through Sandy Hook Bay, under the Verrazano Bridge, and along New York Harbor. You'll also see the shores of Hastings-on-the-Hudson, Tarrytown, Ossining, Croton Point, Haverstraw and Stony Point and get as far north as West Point. A buffet brunch is served while on deck with apple salad, tortellini salad, fingerling potato salad with haricot vert, butternut squash bisque, smoked salmon, flank steak, southwestern grilled chicken with mango salsa, and assorted pastries. This cruise is also narrated so you'll learn all about the sites you pass along the way. The cruise is offered Saturdays and Sundays through October 31. Tickets are $119 per person.

Classic Harbor Line's  Fall   Foliage  Cruises & Sails

Don’t have a full day to spend admiring the changing colors? Reserve a seat on the brunch cruise with Classic Harbor Line from Pier 62 for a shorter route, leaving just enough time for you to admire the gold, red and russet-hued leaves of the Palisades. From October 15 to November 14, these two-and-a-half-hour cruises offer the perfect trip up the Hudson:

  • Manhattan II : Grand Palisade Fall Foliage Cruise ($88-$106 per adult and $64 per child 3-14)
  • Full Moon: Fall Foliage Cruise on Full Moon from Chelsea Piers ($88-$106/adult and $64/child 3-14)
  • Kingston : Fall Foliage Cruise aboard Kingston ($88-106/adult and $64/child 3-14)
  • Adirondack : Fall Foliage Schooner Sail (3.5 hours; $88-106/adult, $64/child 5-14)

We suggest heading out on a weekend brunch cruise, which comes with a three-course prix fixe menu (includes New York bakery pastries, salmon and lox, chef’s autumn salad with roasted vegetables, oven-roasted ham and more) inside the glass observatory of the Yacht Manhattan and Manhattan II across two-and-a-half hours. It takes off on Saturdays and Sundays and tickets are $124-142 per adult and $72 per child 3-14.

The top-rated, two-hour Fall Foliage Luncheon Cruise on Fridays and Saturdays has a multi-course menu including homemade soups such as a spice roasted butternut squash soup or a cauliflower soup topped with prosciutto and Manchego cheese. A roasted pumpkin and candied walnut salad with Chef’s maple vinaigrette, and assorted tea sandwiches are also in rotation on the menu. Each booking group is seated at a private table separated by clear partitions, with the option to open sliding glass windows throughout the vessel. Tickets are $96-132 per adult and $72 per child 3-14.

Your ticket to a Classic Harbor Line trip also includes an autumnal spiked hot cocoa, as well as a well-curated selection of beer, wine, champagne, and soft drinks.

Here are a few of the notable stops you’ll experience along the way.

Hudson River School Art Trail

In Catskill, NY, the Hudson River School Art Trail offers a journey through landscapes that inspired America's first art movement. Thomas Cole, often called the father of the Hudson River School, captured the natural beauty of this region in his paintings. In the fall, the trail becomes a colorful spectacle, with fiery leaves contrasting against the serene river and textured coastline. You can hike these historic sites, join guided tours, or go at your own pace to see it all.

The orchard allows all to enjoy hayrides and corn mazes, making it a perfect outing for a fall day.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum

In Hyde Park, NY, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum offers a mix of history and natural beauty. Opened in 1941, it was the first presidential library and the only one used by a sitting president. The vibrant fall colors surrounding this historic site create a stunning backdrop. Explore FDR's home, check out museum exhibits, and wander through beautiful gardens, all while soaking in the autumn vibes. Special exhibits often focus on FDR's New Deal programs and World War II, providing a look into a key part of American history.

Vanderbilt Mansion

Also in Hyde Park, the Vanderbilt Mansion is a grand estate from America's Gilded Age. Built in the late 19th century, it was a summer home for Frederick William Vanderbilt. The grounds are meticulously landscaped and come alive with fall colors. Take a guided tour of the mansion and gardens to catch a glimpse of the opulent lifestyle of the famed Vanderbilts. The estate's scenic overlooks provide stunning views of the Hudson River and the surrounding foliage.

West Point Museum

At West Point, NY, the West Point Museum offers a complete look into the history of the United States Military Academy. Established in 1802, West Point is one of the oldest military academies in the world. The museum sits amid rolling hills that turn vibrant each fall, creating a picturesque setting. Guided tours, interactive exhibits, and exclusive collections make this a great spot for history enthusiasts. Plus, the scenic drive along the Hudson River to West Point is simply gorgeous.

Gothic Lyndhurst Mansion

Sleepy Hollow, NY, is already famous for its spooky legends, and the Gothic Lyndhurst Mansion adds even more charm. This grand estate, with its dramatic architecture and sprawling grounds, was built in 1838 and has been home to several prominent New Yorkers, including railroad tycoon Jay Gould. It's even more enchanting in the fall. Tour the mansion, stroll through the gardens, and join in on seasonal events like ghost tours and harvest festivals. The vibrant foliage perfectly complements the mansion's gothic grandeur, creating a profound setting straight out of a storybook.

What could be more beautiful than marveling at the colorful autumn leaves on board a historic ship? That’s exactly what you can do on these fall foliage tours, which are among the most popular boat tours in autumn.

This year there are several different tours to choose from. What they all have in common is the destination: the Hudson Valley. The Hudson Valley is located north of Manhattan, and on the way there on the Hudson River, you’ll pass through the famous George Washington Bridge and be able to enjoy the view of the impressive rock formations called Palisades.

But which fall foliage tour is the best? You can find out here in 👉 my comparison . And below you’ll find 👉 all the details about the fall foliage cruises.

As with all boat tours for special events like the Dinner Cruises , Brunch Cruises and Lunch Cruises  or Jazz Cruises tickets are very popular and often book up quickly. Therefore: if there are still tickets available, you should book quickly!

The Best Fall Foliage Cruises in NYC

Here are the best fall foliage boat tours along the Hudson River:

Which Fall Foliage Cruise in New York is the Best?

Personally, I have two favorites: Number 1 is the Grand Palisades Fall Foliage Yacht Tour because it is on board the beautiful yacht “Manhattan”. My 2nd recommendation is the yacht tour .

Fall Foliage Cruises NYC in Detail

Grand palisades fall foliage yacht tour.

Grand Palisades Fall Foliage Yacht Tour

On this tour you are on board the Manhattan, a beautiful boat in the style of the yachts of the 1920s. Lots of wood and glass await you and you can either enjoy the view of the colorful autumn leaves in the heated salon or go out on the outside deck.

The cruise starts at Chelsea Piers, not far from Hudson Yards. Afterwards, you can relax and cruise north along the Hudson River. On the way you can enjoy the view of the New York skyline and the ride under the George Washington Bridge.

On your left and right you will see the forested banks of the Hudson River. You will be surprised how many colorful autumn leaves you will see.  And the best part? The price of the 2.25-hour cruise even includes a free drink!

Hudson River Fall Foliage Afternoon Sail

Hudson River Fall Foliage Afternoon Sail

If you’re looking for a relaxing boat tour where you can experience fall in New York in a very special way, check out this 3.5-hour sailing tour.

You’ll be aboard the Schooner Adirondack or Schooner America 2.0, which depart from Pier 62 at Chelsea Piers. It’s a leisurely sail from here toward the George Washington Bridge and the famous “Palisades” rock formations. Your destination? The Hudson Valley!

On this autumnal sailing cruise you can enjoy the beautiful fall colors and just have a good time on board. I love sailing tours because it feels like a vacation on vacation to me. And in the fall, this one is one of my absolute favorites!

Classic Harbor Line: Afternoon Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise

Afternoon_Fall_Lunch_Cruise_GYG

Come aboard the luxury yacht Manhattan II and experience this fall cruise on a 1920s-style boat. The tour departs from Chelsea Piers and then heads north on the Hudson River. Sights include the Hudson River Valley, Palisades Park and the George Washington Bridge.

The price includes a delicious menu consisting of soup, salad, sandwich and fall-themed cookies, as well as a complimentary beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Other drinks are available for purchase at the bar.

Hudson River Fall Foliage Yacht Tour

Hudson River Fall Foliage Yacht Tour

The Hudson River Fall Foliage Yacht Tour is very similar to the Grand Palisades Fall Foliage Yacht Tour. The only difference is that you will travel on the elegant yacht “Kingston” and the tour lasts 2.5h.

The Kingston is another ship of the fleet, built in the style of the yachts of the 1920s. Therefore, you can expect a very special atmosphere on board, which cannot be compared with the sightseeing cruises. That’s why these fall foliage cruises are so popular around autumn.

You start your tour at the Chelsea Piers and then sail along the Hudson River. On the way you will pass the George Washington Bridge, look at the Upper West Side of NYC and then reach the cliffs of Palisades Park.

By the way: only on weekends in the fall the Kingston leaves for the Hudson Valley. If you are in NYC during the week and want to take a boat tour where you can enjoy the colorful fall foliage, just check out the other tours on my best list!

New York City Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise

Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise

The New York City Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise is one of the best boat tours you can take in New York in the fall. You’ll see an incredible amount of nature as you make your way up the Hudson River – that was something that really surprised me personally. On top of that, this Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise takes place on a very beautiful 1920’s style ship. The atmosphere is really great!

The ship takes you from Pier 62 towards Palisades Park and the George Washington Bridge. You will pass the last part of Manhattan on your right with the Upper West Side and Harlem and go under the impressive George Washington Bridge, the only bridge that connects the state of New Jersey with the state of New York. And on your left you will be able to admire Palisades Park in New Jersey.

What is the Best Cruise in New York for you?

There are over 40 boat and sailing tours in New York and it’s not easy to choose the best one. That’s where our Cruise Finder comes in. It will help you find the best boat tour for you!

When is the best time to see the colorful autumn leaves in the Hudson Valley NYC?

From mid/late October to early/mid November the colors in the Hudson Valley are most impressive. Only for this short period you can book these special boat tours. Since the cruises are very popular you should book your tickets as soon as possible because they sell out fast!

Which Fall Foliage cruise in NYC is the cheapest?

The cheapest fall foliage cruise in New York City start at around $108.

Where do the Fall Foliage cruises depart from in New York?

The departure point depends on the operators. But most of the fall foliage cruises depart from Chelsea Piers on the Hudson River at Pier 61/62.

Is there a dress code?

No – usually there is no dress code for the cruises. Some special cruises might have a dress code but the operator would inform you about this before departure.

Due to Hyde Park’s natural beauty and proximity to the city, families such as the Astors and Vanderbilts built weekend homes nearby. Hudson Valley Fall Foliage Guide: The Best Views, What to Do & What to Pack

Leaf peeping Time or the enjoyment of the Hudson River Valley Fall Foliage Season is a favorite activity around these parts. Seeing the red leaves, orange leaves and yellow leaves makes many people very happy.

You can feel the buzz in our typically quiet small town as people flock up north to see the fall colors and participate in apple picking season.

When I began taking Weekend trips to different areas of the Hudson Valley and upstate New York, I never really thought about how many places actually exist in the area to view the vibrant colors of peak foliage in this beautiful area of the United States.

The Fall Season or Autumn Season can be tricky around these parts. Some years we have what my mother used to call ‘Indian Summer’ and other years, it has snowed in October. So the best way to approach an outing to see spectacular fall foliage is by being prepared.

Most importantly, though, where is the Best Hudson Valley Fall Foliage and the Best Hudson Valley Events during this wonderful time of the year?

This article contains an affiliate link or two. I make a small commission for purchases made through links at no extra cost to you. Read my disclosure for more info.

When does the Hudson Valley Fall Foliage Change begin to happen?

We notice the days getting shorter and shorter and the nighttime chill is beginning to settle in on us and that just means one thing in the Hudson Valley: It’s the annual preparation for the Hudson Valley Autumn season and the beginning of Hudson Valley Fall Foliage time.

The color change of Autumn leaves begin to happen and people throughout New England, including New York start preparing for the season by researching the best spots to see peak color.

Hudson Valley Fall Foliage Reports Through the ‘I Love NY’ Website

The ILOVENY.com website has a great ‘Fall Foliage Newsletter’ that’s sent out weekly during the season to keep everyone up-to-date on the changing of the leaves in the entirety of New York State.

This is probably the best way to keep tabs on the mix of peak and non-peak foliage area from New York City to Long Island to Niagara Falls. The good news is you can sign up for it right on their website .

You can also apply to become an Official Volunteer Leaf Peeper for your area in New York State. How cool is that? Each week you would submit a report to I Love NY detailing what the leaf conditions are in your area.

Hudson Valley Fall Foliage Reports Through SmokyMountains.com

SmokyMountains.com estimates the changing of the leaves for the entire United States, not just the Hudson Valley.

Since this tool is just an estimate, you can use it as a guide to not only check for peak weekends in the Hudson Valley, but also in neighboring states, such as Connecticut and New Jersey.

According to their website, the Hudson Valley should start seeing minimal change beginning the week of September 14th and we should be near peak and peak times by October 5th.

Tips for the Perfect Hudson Valley Fall Foliage Outing

Before we dive into the best spots to see the Hudson Valley Fall Foliage in the following areas:

  • Lower Hudson Valley (Westchester County, Putnam County, Rockland County),
  • Mid-Hudson Valley (Orange County, Dutchess County, Ulster County)
  • Central New York (Albany County, Columbia County, Delaware County, Greene County, Sullivan County) and
  • Upper New York (Finger Lakes Region, Adirondack Mountains, Cayuga Lake, Lake George, Lake Placid)

Here are a few tips for you. Whether you are going for the day or a weekend getaway, these tips are vital for success.

Hudson Valley Fall Foliage time is the best time to get put and go leaf peeping

Before you begin your Hudson Valley Fall Foliage Outing

#1: check the weather.

Check out how the weather will be before you plan your outing.

I have made the mistake several times of leaving the house without checking the weather and regretted not being prepared (colder than usual/ warmer than usual/wet weather). Check out my list below for essentials that I always have with me.

#2: Make a list of Activities you will be doing

Make a list of some popular Hudson Valley Fall Activities & Events and how you can tie them into your leaf peeping adventure.

#3: Pack what you may need according to the weather & the activities

  • For day/road trips, these tips would be useful and your best bet.
  • For overnight trips, this packing list will be incredibly useful .

#4: Examine where you’ll be staying the majority of the time

Check and see if you’ll be spending the majority of your time in the city or in the country.

Why is this important? If you’re visiting the city, then you will have more resources at your disposal. You can always run into a coffee shop to warm up and a convenience store to pick up anything you may have left at home. You can also get away with taking less with you.

If you’re visiting the country, you will be out in the elements for longer periods of time without an indoor break and you will need to be better prepared because there will be limited stores around for some essentials.

FYI: Our experience has been that many bigger mini-marts are equipped with many things you may need when you are out on the road.

The Best Hudson Valley Fall Foliage Locations

#1: route 9w up storm king mountain.

If you have ever driven on Route 9W North from Fort Montgomery towards Cornwall, there are several scenic overlooks where you can stop safely and get a grand view of all the trees and towns below.

This is a beautiful spot to take in the view of the United States Military Academy at West Point and the surrounding area. It is mesmerizing to see the Fall Foliage Peak from higher elevations.

The main thing to keep in mind is to use the designated scenic overlook spots and not park right off the road because people drive very quickly through there and it can get dangerous.

Hudson Valley Fall Foliage seen best from Route 9W on Storm King Mountain

#2: Take a Fall Foliage Train Ride on the Catskill Mountain RailRoad

The ‘ Catskill Fall Foliage Train ‘ boards in Kingston and takes you on the former Ulster & Delaware Railroad Corridor where you will see spectacular views. Offering both closed and open air cars, this is a unique experience everyone will enjoy.

In addition, they have a few days when they do the ‘Pumpkin Express’. During this special event, passengers get to pick their own pumpkin to take home and decorate.

#3: Take a drive through the Shawangunk Wine Trail

Starting in Ulster County, driving the Shawangunk Wine Trail is a great way to see the Mid-Hudson Valley Region and also a wonderful way to check out all the Hudson Valley Fall Foliage.

Starting approximately 60 miles of New York City, this trail consists of 15 wineries along a very scenic drive.

In addition to these wineries there are various stops along the way to catch sight of the changing leaves.

These include:

  • Minnewaska State Park Preserve
  • Mohonk Preserve
  • The Walkway over the Hudson State Park : a pedestrian bridge that connects Ulster County and Dutchess County over the Hudson River.

Jackie jumping at Benmarl Winery in Marlboro, NY

Make sure to stop at Benmarl Winery in Marlboro . With its amazing views of the valley below this is one place you will definitely get spectacular photos of the Hudson Valley Fall Foliage.

#4: Head on up Hunter Mountain on their Scenic Skyride or Zipline Adventures

Imagine taking a chair lift up Hunter Mountain to view the Hudson Valley Fall Foliage from on top of a mountain. Not to ski… but to enjoy the view from the top.

Well, it’s possible. The ride itself from base to top is about 10 minutes, but the views are worth it. The best time to visit Hunter Mountain is during the area’s peak time.

Once at the top, you can take a hike to the highest fire tower in NYS. And see even better views from the top of the fire tower.

If ziplining is more your speed, then the New York Zipline Canopy Tours at Hunter Mountain should be next on your list.

As of the time of this posting, the Mid-Mountain Adventures were open and ready to welcome visitors.

Hudson Valley Fall Foliage on the ground

#5: Drive along the Hawk’s Nest

On Route 97 outside of Port Jervis, NY sits a stretch of road that sits high above the Delaware River. The views are spectacular but the road is windy and should be driven with caution. According to Wikipedia, the name came about from the hawks that make their nests in the area.

#6: Drive on Route 9 Starting in Hyde Park

Starting in Hyde Park and heading north, the scenery on Route 9 changes drastically. Route 9 is the longest north-south highway in New York and forks off into Route 9G between Rhinebeck and Red Hook, NY. Located on the east side of the Hudson River, many beautiful historic sites are located on the banks of the Hudson River.

The drive from Hyde Park NY to Hudson NY, is approximately 1 hour long. Along the way, there are many places to stop and take in the Hudson Valley Fall Foliage.

Vanderbilt Mansion with the sun setting behind it

Here are some places to stop and admire the amazing Hudson Valley Fall Foliage and the view of the Hudson River:

  • Home of Franklin D Roosevelt National Historic Site
  • Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site
  • Staatsburgh State Historic Site
  • Ferncliff Forest
  • Poet’s Walk Park
  • Clermont State Historic Site (off of Route 9G)
  • Olana State Historic Site (Route 9G)

#7: Take a Hike up a Mountain

Some popular places for hiking that are prime spots for viewing Hudson Valley Fall Foliage include:

  • Anthony’s Nose
  • Mount Beacon
  • Breakneck Ridge
  • Hudson Highlands State Park
  • Bear Mountain State Park
  • Harriman State Park
  • Kaaterskill Falls

Hudson Valley Fall Foliage in Carmel, NY

#8: Visit an Outdoor Art Center

I may be biased, but a trip to an outdoor art center is a good idea anytime the weather is good. So these places make the best spots to admire the changing colors of the season.

Storm King Art Center, located in New Windsor, is a popular place to not only view the outdoor sculptures but also the impressive natural landscape all around.

Art Omi , located in Ghent, houses an impressive collection of art amongst its more than 100-acre property and is the perfect place to visit in late October.

Opus 40 , located in Saugerties NY, is not only an impressive place to visit but the views of the Catskill Mountains from the property are awe inspiring!

A field at Storm King Art Center

#9: Leaf Peep ANYWHERE along the Hudson River

With so many Historic Hudson River Towns up and down the river, there is no shortage of places to see the breathtaking fall foliage.

Some great places are:

  • Cold Spring
  • Dobbs Ferry
  • Poughkeepsie

For those willing to take it a step further, a tour of Bannerman Castle on the Hudson River makes the perfect trip for the ideal leaf peeping adventure.

West Point’s Trophy Point is a wonderful place and is the area that has inspired many artists since the early 19th century. In addition to the spectacular view, Trophy Point is also home to the Battle Monument, one of the largest columns of granite in the world.

October is the best time to visit the Hudson Valley. The best places to visit in the Hudson Valley are featured in this post.

#10: Go over one of the Many Bridges that go over the Hudson River

Instead of braving the elements, some people have a better time viewing the bright oranges and bright reds of the leaves from the comfort of their car.

While driving around the Hudson Valley many people enjoy going over the many bridges in the area. From the Taconic State Parkway to the Palisades Interstate Parkway (towards the George Washington Bridge), many have scenic byways that offer tremendous views.

  • Bear Mountain Bridge
  • The New TappanZee Bridge
  • Mid-Hudson Bridge
  • Newburgh-Beacon Bridge
  • Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge

Weather during Hudson Valley Fall Foliage Season

Fall weather in the Hudson Valley (Late September – Early December) can easily range from 30 – 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Because of the three distinct areas of the Hudson Valley regions , the weather can differ and range drastically.

It’s always best to check the weather before making any plans and prepare accordingly. We’ve gone apple picking in t-shirts and shorts one year and coats and gloves another year.

The cooler temperatures are favorable, though, later on during the season.

Fall colors: The best places in Hudson Valley and beyond to see fall foliage

Those of us who love summer may not want to admit it but fall is around the corner. And that means leaf-peeping. But you've got to plan now if you want to catch Mother Nature's colorful show. Some of the best fall foliage starts in mid-September to late October.

Ideas on where to go follow, though if you're staying local, your best bet is to tune into I Love New York's Fall Foliage report at iloveny.com/things-to-do/fall/foliage-report .

Fall weather prediction: Find out what the Old Farmer's Almanac says the fall has in store for Lower Hudson Valley

Cooperstown, New York

Looking for the ideal view? The Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown, nicknamed “America’s Most Perfect Village,” features unmatched views of the water and surrounding hills. Leaf-peeping from the hotel's famed Veranda is a must — if you're lucky, you'll catch the bright yellow leaves of the local Ash trees, the reds of the Red Maple's (which transition from yellow to orange) and the bright crimson of the Pin Oak.

Guests can also enjoy other activities such as a round of golf on the award-winning Leatherstocking Golf Course or a photography tour of the property. Other must-see sights include The Farmers’ Museum , The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Fenimore Art Museum . This being a baseball town, it's fun to know the area's maple trees boast not only beautiful leaves but their wood is ideal for making baseball bats. More info at thisiscooperstown.com .

Fall foliage in all its glory can be found at The Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown.

Food: 10 Westchester, Rockland restaurants that make you feel like you're on vacation

The Catskills, New York

This area, which encompasses a large swath of the Hudson Valley starting in Greene and Ulster Counties, features a wide array of options for primetime viewing. The Catskill Mountain Railroad's Fall Foliage Train Rides are just one place to start. Another: the Hunter Mountain Skyride, the longest and highest skyride in the region which takes you 3,200 feet above sea level.

Feeling adventurous? Mount Utsayantha , located just outside of the Catskill Forest Preserve, features two “hang glider” take off spots, one just below the summit and the other in front of the summit building, while the 26-mile-long Catskills Scenic Trail sports an array of color on a trail that's mostly flat, wide, and easy.

As for where to stay, try Callicoon Hills , a former boarding house; INNESS, with 40 guest rooms and 28 cabins; Piaule where you're immersed in the depths of the forest or an Airbnb like Killer Cat Mountain House , owned by a Scarsdale couple. For a serene, nostalgic ambiance and luxury, also check out Wylder Windham which recently announced a partnership with Small Luxury Hotels of the Worl d meaning Hilton members can now book with Hilton Honors points. The hotel, it should be noted, was named a "favorite New York State Resort" by Travel + Leisure in 2023. More info at iloveny.com/places-to-go/catskills .

Allegany County, Maryland

Mother Nature is the star of the show in this part of Maryland with nearly 70,000 acres of public land. Located in the “ridge and valley” region of the oldest mountain range in the U.S. — the Appalachian Mountains — Allegany County is also known for its hiking, biking and lush vistas.

Local outfitter WheezUp Adventures offers “The Big Deal” ride, which traverses the picturesque landscapes of the mountains on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP). Other fall foliage views await on a self-guided driving tour of Green Ridge State Forest . In addition to outdoor recreation opportunities, Rocky Gap State Park, which is celebrating its 50 th anniversary this year, offers plenty of options for overnight guests, including a stay at Rocky Gap Casino, Resort & Golf .

There are more than 100 common tree varieties and a rainbow of changing colors in the fall, including American/European Large (yellow), Sassafras (orange/yellow), Scarlet Oak (vibrant red), Speckled Alder (yellow/brown) and Yellow Birch (yellow). More info at mdmountainside.com .

Shenandoah County, Virginia

With more than 26% of the county covered in national and state forest and 178 miles of trails, you're sure to find a picturesque spot for fall foliage viewing. Among the standouts: Buzzard Rock and Big Schloss , the latter of which often tops the destination’s list of best hikes thanks to its unique vantage point of the Valley from rock outcrops along the Virginia/West Virginia border.

Prefer to see it on horseback? Book a guided ride through the George Washington National Forest. For lodging, try Bear Lodge in Basye or Bryce Resort.   More info at visitshenandoahcounty.com .

There's lots of hiking surrounding Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz.

Mohonk Mountain Preserve, New Paltz

If 85 miles of trails don't entice you, there's always paddleboarding, climbing or horseback riding. The Mohonk Preserve in Ulster County offers stunning vistas of the Shawangunk Mountains with lots of options for taking in Mother Nature's glory. And when all that outdoor activity makes you hungry, a stay at the majestic Mohonk Mountain House will revive you thanks to its featuring farm to table cuisine and relaxing spa services.

Even more special: This iconic mountain resort, now in its fifth generation of family ownership, is celebrating its 155th anniversary this year, a feat accomplished by fewer than 3% of all family-owned businesses in the U.S.

Why You Should Consider a Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise

The Hudson River Valley is a sight to see any time of year, but during the months of October and November, this region radiates like no other. And what better way to experience the Hudson River than a fall foliage cruise?

The calm waters pave way for some incredible sightseeing as the leaves fall and change colors while scents of ginger, amber, and citrus fill the autumn air. Not only will you get to experience the scenic beauty of this historic valley, but you’ll also have the opportunity to sample an array of amazing cuisine along the way.

Enticing enough? You bet!

But there’s so much more. Let’s take a closer look at why a Hudson River fall foliage cruise should be on your travel bucket list.

Fall is the Best Season to Visit

The thinning of the tourist crowds, the cooler temperatures and the foliage are just a few of the reasons why fall is the best season to visit and explore the Hudson River. Families have settled back into their homes as school begins another session and as days get shorter, the temperature drops to a more comfortable level, making it ideal for outdoor activities.

Bear Mountain State Park

Most importantly, the dense forests along the river covered with oak, maple and sycamore trees are strikingly beautiful as they change colors from luscious green to bright orange, yellow and red.

Insider Tip: If time allows, take one of the challenging hikes at Bear Mountain State Park to experience the natural beauty of the fall foliage up close and personal.

Variety of Cruising Options

There are several types of Hudson River fall foliage cruises available. Companies like American Cruise Lines offer multi-day itineraries that include ports of call in Hyde Park, Sleepy Hollow and Albany. There are also 9 and 12-night cruises like those offered by Windstar that will take you to up the southeast Canadian countryside, passing many iconic landmarks and destinations along the way.

Insider Tip: Keep an eye out for The Cloisters, the satellite museum of the Met specializing in medieval art, as you pass along the upper Manhattan peninsula.

Big Cities and Charming Small Towns

If you’re a fan of American literature and history, you’re going to enjoy many of the activities and attractions available at various ports of call during your Hudson River fall foliage cruise.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum

For starters, you can retrace the footsteps of one of America’s beloved writers, Washington Irving, in Sleepy Hollow. Proceed to discover Hyde Park, the birthplace of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Tour the family home where he was born and stop by the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum to learn about the great triumphs and tribulations of FDR and his wife, Eleanor.

You can also experience the longstanding traditions at the United States Military Academy in West Point. Step on the same hallowed grounds that the likes of General George Patton, President Dwight B. Eisenhower and astronaut Buzz Aldrin once walked on. Meanwhile, up in Albany, New York’s state capital, pay a visit to the State Capitol where you can take a free tour of one of the most stunning buildings in the state.

Finally, as the point of embarkation and disembarkation, New York City offers you with a variety of activities and attractions. From the best theatre productions at Broadway to the most extensive collection of fine art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, there’s no shortage of things to do. In addition to the sights, New York City is also a gastronomical heaven. The diversity of culinary offerings in the city is obvious especially when you see a three Michelin-star restaurant occupying the same block as a Shake Shack.

Los Tacos, New York

Queue up at Los Tacos , the taqueria that many New Yorkers agree as one of the best in the city and then explore the Highline, a former train track turned elevated park nearby.
