12 Cheap Spring Break Cruises for 2024 (Starting at $239)

Looking for a Spring Break getaway? What’s better than hitting the water, sailing to the Caribbean, and enjoying some of the most beautiful beaches in the world?

What about doing all of that without spending a fortune? In fact, we’ve found some Spring Break cruises that allow you to sail — with a cabin and meals included — for in some cases less than a flight alone to the Caribbean.

The truth is, Spring Break is one of the times of year where prices for cruises typically spike. However, for 2024, we’re finding a number great deals — including many Spring Break cruises for under $300 per person.

Below, we’ve found some of the cheapest cruises for 2024 season across multiple ports and cruise lines. But before we get to that, here are some pointers on how to find the cheapest trips during this popular time of year.

How to Find Cheap Spring Break Cruises

spring break confidential cruises

If you’re wanting to score the best deal during this time of year, then keep the following in mind:

Shorter Cruises = Less Money While you have a week for Spring Break, if you want the cheapest cruises, then avoid spending all week on the ship. Cruise lines offer a ton of 3-5 day cruises and these are drastically less overall than sailing for an entire week.

This shouldn’t be as a surprise. With cruise fare covering everything from your cabin to meals to entertainment, it costs less to take a passenger on a four-night cruise than it does to take them on a week-long vacation. If you are on a budget, shorter cruises are your friend. (Even so, there are some good deals we found on week-long trips!)

Florida is King of Cheap Cruises Florida is the cruise capital of the world. You have Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, and Tampa all within a few hours of each other. The number of ports and ships sailing from the area mean there are a number of options when it comes to cruises. Not every cheap Spring Break cruise sails from Florida, but it’s where a majority of them sail from.

Prices Rise Through Mid-March Obviously if you are a student, you don’t get to pick when you have your Spring Break. But you should know that prices rise as the month of March goes on. Sailing early in the month is your best bet for the cheapest trips, and prices peak about halfway through the month. A cruise is still an affordable way to travel even if it’s a little more expensive in the middle of March. Just know that early sailing means lower prices.

Use an Aggregator Website That Searches Across All Cruise Lines Head to a cruise line’s website and you’ll find the prices only for that line. After all, you won’t see Royal Caribbean’s deals on Carnival’s website. Instead, look to a third-party travel site to search across all lines to find the best deals.

Sites like AvoyaTravel.com or Orbitz offer prices for all the cruise lines, making it easy to search and book your trip and find deals you wouldn’t see if you only search a specific cruise line’s website. CostcoTravel.com is also a good place to look if your a Costco member.

Note: The prices below were from a recent search and are subject to change . They include only cruise fare for one person in an interior cabin. Taxes, fees, and gratuities will be extra.

Cheap 2024 Spring Break Cruises

3-Night Bahamas Cruise from Miami (MSC) Date: March 15, 2024 Price: $239 per person

If you can make it to the Miami area, then you’ll have a lot of options for inexpensive cruises. Combine that with MSC, which is known for offering some low prices, and it’s a way to sail for cheap.

This trip is just three days, making it perfect for those on a tight budget. Despite being short, it includes stop at Ocean Cay — MSC’s private island that’s designed specifically for cruise passengers. As well, you will dock in Key West, which is a well known Spring Break spot. The trip sails from Miami aboard the MSC Magnifica. Best of all, an interior room is only $239 per person (the same trip on March 1 is only $179 per person and March 29 costs $209!). You can learn more about this cruise here .

3-Night Mexico Cruise from Long Beach (Carnival) Date: March 15, 2024 Price: $259 per person

Sailing from Long Beach is ideal if you’re looking for a short and cheap cruise. For instance, this trip is just three nights, sailing to Ensenada, Mexico and back. That’s perfect for those looking to just let loose for a few days and get out of town for cheap. It sails aboard the Carnival Radiance at the peak of Spring Break — departing March 15 .

It only costs $259 per person for an interior cabin, making it among the most affordable cruises we found in the month of March. If you have an early break, then a sailing on March 1 is just $229 per person.

3-Night Bahamas Cruise from Port Canaveral (Carnival) Date: March 8, 2024 Price: $299 per person

In terms of absolute value, paying $299 for a three-day cruise isn’t the best deal you’ll find. But paying that much at the height of Spring Break is still pretty good. For just a little under three bills you can escape the cold and sail to Bimini aboard Carnival Liberty .

The cruise departs Port Canaveral on Friday, March 8, returning on Monday, March 11 — so you might have to take off one day from work or school if you live in the area. There are also slightly more expensive trips for other weekends during March if that better matches your schedule.

4-Night Bahamas Cruise from Miami (Carnival) Date: March 18, 2024 Price: $369 per person

The is not the cheapest Spring Break cruise we were able to find aboard Carnival, but this trip is four days (instead of three) at the height of the season, so you have to expect to pay a little more. It heads to Half Moon Cay from Miami and then to Nassau and before heading back home.

Departing in mid-March aboard the Carnival Conquest, this trip won’t break the bank as it’s just $369 per person for cruise fare (taxes, fees, and gratuities will add more) for an interior cabin. Since it sails on a Monday and gets back early Friday morning, it fills up the week of your break with the weekends still open.

3-Night Bahamas Cruise from Fort Lauderdale (Royal Caribbean) Date: March 8, 2024 Price: $281 per person

Royal Caribbean usually isn’t usually the cheapest cruise line, which makes this trip a rare gem. For only $281, you can sail aboard the Liberty of the Seas from Fort Lauderdale . The cruise takes you to Nassau and CocoCay (Royal Caribbean’s private island) before returning home. This particular cruise departs on March 8 — however, you can also sail other dates during the month for a similar price.

7-Night Caribbean Cruise from Port Canaveral (Norwegian) Date: March 17, 2024 Price: $579 per person

In general, deals aboard Norwegian Cruise Line a tougher to come by as the cruise giant typically charges a premium compared to other lines. Still, we found this 7-night cruise during the height of Spring Break season for less than $100 per day . It will be more when you factor in double occupancy and taxes and fees, but that’s a solid price for this time of year.

Sailing aboard Norwegian Epic from Port Canaveral, you’ll visit NCL’s private island Great Stirrup Cay, San Juan, St. Thomas and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. In addition, you’ll have days at sea to enjoy the ship and work on your tan.

5-Night Mexico Cruise from Galveston (Carnival) Date: March 25, 2024 Price: $569 per person

Outside of Florida, Galveston is one of the premier departure ports in the United States giving you a lot of options on ships to sail, departure dates, and itineraries. In this case we found a 5-day cruise aboard Carnival Breeze departing in late March for just $569 .

For that amount you’ll head to Costa Maya and Cozumel before heading back to Texas. We’ll be honest that $569 for a five-day cruise isn’t the greatest deal. But if you’re one of the tens of millions within driving distance of the port, it’s still cheaper than having to fly to Florida to cruise.

6-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise from Miami (Carnival) Date: March 17, 2024 Price: $499 per person

Heading to Eastern Caribbean is cheap and easy when you sail from Miami. This six-day cruise in March takes passengers to Grand Turk (where they can swim in the shadow of the ship, Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, and then Nassau before heading back home to Miami, with a couple of days at sea thrown in as well. Best of all, you can get the trip for just under $500 per person if you book an interior cabin. The cruise sails aboard the Carnival Magic. It’s one of Carnival’s older ships, but who cares when you are simply there to have a good time on Spring Break?

6-Night Caribbean Cruise from Miami (Royal Caribbean) Date: March 18, 2024 Price: $524 per person

For any six-night cruise during Spring Break, under $100 a day is a good deal. For a trip aboard Royal Caribbean, it is even better. This nearly week-long trip departs Miami in mid-March , headed to Nassau, Puerto Plata, and Labadee (a private destination for the cruise line).

You’ll also have days at sea, giving you a chance to party on the ship, hang out poolside, and generally relax before heading back to the real world. The cruise is aboard the Grandeur of the Seas, which is one of the oldest ships in the fleet, but that’s one reason why it’s relatively inexpensive.

7-Night Bahamas Cruise from New York (MSC) Date: March 24, 2024 Price: $389 per person

Think of cruising and it’s likely you don’t think of New York City. But it’s turned into a popular spot with all the major lines sailing from there.

The trip is aboard MSC Meraviglia heads out during the peak of the Spring Break season for just $389 per person . It then heads south to Port Canaveral, Ocean Cay, and Nassau to get away from the sometimes still chilly March weather in the northeast.

At just about $55 per night, that’s way cheaper than flying to The Bahamas or Florida to spend your vacation.

5-Night Bahamas Cruise from Los Angeles (Norwegian) Date: March 31, 2024 Price: $348 per person

When you think of Spring Break, you likely think of sun and sand, but this unique cruise flips that on its head. This trip aboard NCL takes you from Los Angeles on a repositioning cruise. That means instead of returning to the same port, the ship is moving to a new homeport. Since these routes are one way, they require a way to return home and usually see less demand. The result is a cheaper fare.

In this case, for just a shade under $350 , you leave LA on Norwegian Bliss headed north to stop in San Francisco and then Victoria, British Columbia before finishing in Vancouver. That’s a memorable trip, even if it’s not ideal for playing on the beach.

7-Night Caribbean Cruise from New Orleans (Norwegian) Date: March 17, 2024 Price: $649 per person

For many, New Orleans is a spot to visit during Spring Break on its own. This cruise, however, takes you from the Big Easy aboard Norwegian Breakaway, sailing out to the warm Caribbean. From New Orleans you’ll sail to Cozumel, followed by Roatan, Harvest Caye (an NCL private destination) and then Costa Maya.

This sailing packs in a lot of ports during a one-week cruise , and at a price of $649 per person for an interior cabin (before taxes/fees), it’s a good deal for this time of year.

SPEND SPRING BREAK ON A PRIVATE ISLAND WITH YOUR FRIENDS

Published on February 8, 2020

Royal Caribbean's Instagram for Live Updates

If you’re a college student, you know spring break is the first big hurrah before your long-awaited summer vacation — and the first opportunity of the year to set out on an unforgettable weeklong vacation. In many places, temperatures are finally warm enough to ditch long sleeves and pants, and opt for t-shirts and shorts instead. And vacation destinations around the world are gearing up to welcome seasonal travelers with all kinds of amazing experiences. Hotspots like Cabo in Mexico and Miami in South Florida frequently top lists for the most popular spring break destinations, but if you’re looking for an all-out private island experience unlike any other, it doesn’t get better than a spring break cruise to Perfect Day at CocoCay with Royal Caribbean. Take it from a vacation expert — nothing beats a visit to this thrill-filled island paradise. Here’s why.

IT’S TOTALLY EXCLUSIVE TO ROYAL CARIBBEAN GUESTS

Perfect Day Island CocoCay Bahamas Floating Bar

Perfect Day at CocoCay is a private island owned by Royal Caribbean, which means that the only way to get there is on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Forget super-packed beaches and long lines at bars and restaurants, which is what you’ll find at most other vacation destinations during spring break. Because Perfect Day at CocoCay is exclusive to Royal Caribbean guests, overcrowding is never a problem. In fact, the island offers lots of free loungers and umbrellas at all of its beaches and inland attractions, so you won’t have to waste time searching for an available spot. There are plenty of bars scattered throughout the island as well, including the Floating Bar, which you can easily wade to from the shore, and a swim-up bar that’s always buzzing inside a massive freshwater lagoon — more on that later.

YOU CAN GET YOUR FILL OF BUCKET LIST THRILLS

Perfect Day Coco Cay Daredevil Peak Landing Splashing

There aren’t many island destinations out there that also have a full-fledged waterpark with record-breaking slides — but Perfect Day at CocoCay does, and it’s one of the things that make it an epic spring break vacation spot. The private island is home to Thrill Waterpark , which encompasses thirteen crazy-fun waterslides, an obstacle course, and the largest wave pool in the Caribbean. If you’re really brave, you can take on Daredevil’s Peak. Standing 135 feet high, it’s the tallest waterslide in North America. If you’re not into heights and speed is more your cup of tea, try one of the many racer slides, like Splash Speedway, which has four lanes so you can challenge your besties. Or the Manta Raycers, twin open-flume slides that let two friends go head-to-head on a mad dash to the finish line. If you’re visiting Perfect Day at CocoCay with a group of thrill-seekers, you might want to consider booking a private cabana at Thrill Waterpark. Not only does a cabana reservation here cover park admission for up to eight guests — it also comes with dedicated attendant service so that you never have to leave the action.

Epic slides and rides at Thrill Waterpark aren’t the only attractions you’ll find at this private island escape. You can check a helium balloon ride off your bucket list here, too. Up, Up and Away gently lifts guests up to 450 feet into the sky, yielding awe-inspiring views of the island and the turquoise waters that surround it. And there’s also a 1,600-foot-long zip line ride that carries you right over the harbor fountain. The best part? You can experience all the thrills for yourself in just one day, because the attractions are so close to each other (this is an exclusive private island destination, remember?).

IT’S HOME TO THE CARIBBEAN’S COOLEST PARTY SPOT

Perfect Day Coco Cay Oasis Lagoon Family Swimming

Another reason why spring break cruises to Perfect Day at CocoCay make for unforgettable experiences is because the party scene you’ll find onshore is second to none. If you’re looking for a party, Oasis Lagoon is the place to be. The largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, it’s another one of Perfect Day at CocoCay’s record-setting attractions — and the ultimate turn-up spot. It’s not unusual for conga lines to form spontaneously here and snake their way around the massive lagoon’s swim-up islands and coves. A team of talented bartenders keep the piña coladas, Bahama Mamas and Coco Locos coming strong at the swim-up bar, and a DJ makes sure the soundtrack is loaded with all your favorite jams — in fact, take a dip beneath the surface of the pool and you’ll find there’s even a secret mix of tunes pulsing through the underwater speakers. When you need a break from all the excitement, you can float on over to any of the lagoon’s three swim-up islands and coves. Each has its own unique vibe and in-water loungers where you can kick back and bask in the sunshine, Coco Loco in hand.

YOU CAN CHILL IF YOU WANT TO

Perfect Day Coco Cay Chill Island Beach Couple Enjoying the Beach Cabana

Not everybody wants to spend their spring break partying and living it up. For some, the ultimate spring break vacation is more about disconnecting and recharging — and that’s perfectly fine, too. Perfect Day at CocoCay is all about variety, which is why Royal Caribbean made sure to include plenty of options when reimagining their exclusive island destination. If all you want to do during your spring break is unwind and turn up the tropical vibes, head to Chill Island . True to its name, this gorgeous and serene stretch of white sandy beach is the ultimate chill zone, complete with hammocks, plenty of comfy lounge chairs and daybeds, and even private cabanas you can rent for you and your squad. Steps away, Chill Grill serves up all your favorite beach day foods, like juicy burgers, crisp fresh salads, amazing BBQ, and decadent desserts. There’s even a snorkel shack where you can rent equipment to explore the coral clusters that dot the surrounding waters. If you’re craving a drink, wade out to the famous floating bar, bobbing gently on calm turquoise waves just a short distance away from the shoreline.

YOU CAN ALSO GET IN THE GAME

Perfect Day Coco Cay South Beach Volleyball Friends

If you’re more about water sports and activities, South Beach is your go-to. While it’s just as beautiful as its neighbor, Chill Island, this beach is all about staying active. Challenge your squad to a game of volleyball or beachside basketball. Like everywhere else on the island, you’ll find tons of complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas, plus daybeds and cabanas you can reserve for a little more privacy. And a nearby Snack Shack makes it easy and convenient to fuel up on great bites in between activities. What’s more, South Beach is home to three different bars — the eponymous South Beach Bar, the Sandtrap Bar and the floating bar, so your favorite beers and tropical drinks are never far.

There you have it — the ultimate spring break getaway that offers something for every kind of guest. Whether you come for the beautiful beaches and island vibes, the adrenaline-amping rides, or the bass-pumping revelry, Perfect Day at CocoCay should be number one on your list of epic spring break vacation option. Your ticket to paradise is a spring break cruise with Royal Caribbean, which offers just as many thrills and game changing ways to chill as the island itself — but that’s a whole other story.

Best spring break cruises for college students and families

Erica Silverstein

Step aside, Disney World and Daytona Beach, Florida. Spring break cruises are attracting both families and college students for memorable vacations in March and April because they offer easy planning, an array of price points and compelling attractions both on board and off.

College students can follow the party to ships laden with bars and late-night entertainment. On short, affordable Bahamas cruises, beachy private islands welcome stress-shedding coeds with waterside bars, shoreside DJs, sandy sports and even amusement parks.

Cruising is so popular that travel agencies run hosted group trips during the biggest spring break weeks to make it easier for college students to book sailings and meet fellow partiers.

Families can spend their week off from school enjoying waterslides, ropes courses, roller coasters, miniature golf and go-karts — all found on cruise ship top decks. Instead of a week at Disney, a short spring break sailing on Disney Cruise Line combined with a park adventure lets families combine beach days with amusement rides.

However, there are some key policies the under-21 crowd needs to know before planning spring break at sea. Below, we outline what you need to know about these March and April sailings and highlight the best spring break cruises for college students and families.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Spring break cruises: What to expect

spring break confidential cruises

Spring break cruises take place during the typically slower shoulder-season travel months of March and April. However, spring break travel has become so popular that Bahamas, Caribbean and Mexico cruises during peak school holiday weeks are often more expensive and more crowded than surrounding weeks.

Families should know that the shorter cruises take on more of a party atmosphere, so stick to the longer sailings, which will be filled with school-age children.

Older or childless couples will probably want to avoid all the weeklong or shorter warm-weather sailings out of U.S. home ports if they're seeking a quiet getaway.

Cruise lines also have policies that might surprise the 18- to 20-year-old crowd hoping to let loose on their college vacation. Here are some key things to know.

Age restrictions on bookings

Many popular cruise lines do not let travelers under the age of 21 book a cruise without a "chaperone" who is 21 or older. On Carnival Cruise Line , the responsible adult needs to be at least 25. This can present problems for a group of 20-year-olds who want to sail together. You'll need to bring along — gulp — a parent or at least an older friend.

Drinking age

Regardless of the drinking age in the islands, the minimum age to drink on many cruise ships sailing from the U.S. is 21. That's even true on MSC Cruises , a European company, on its sailings from U.S. ports. The only line we found among the popular spring break cruise lines with a drinking age of 18 or older is Margaritaville at Sea .

You also are not allowed to bring your own booze on board, whether you're of age or not.

Beverage packages

For the 21 and over college crowd, beverage packages can be an affordable option if you plan on drinking a lot on board. Be aware, however, that some lines limit the number of drinks you can order at one time or on one day. In most cases, everyone sharing a cabin must purchase a drink package if one person does; you cannot share a package among friends or buy drinks for friends if you have a beverage package and they do not.

Smoking, drugs and bad behavior

Cruise lines have strict policies when it comes to smoking on board , and they include vaping and cigars in their policies. You can only smoke in designated areas of each ship, never in your cabin or private balcony. Breaking these rules can lead to $500 fines or even getting kicked off the ship.

You could also get into serious trouble if you try to smuggle drugs or marijuana on board . If you're caught, you could be prevented from embarking the ship or forcefully disembarked mid-cruise . You'd then be on your own to get home, and the cruise line will not refund the costs of your missed cruise.

And, yes, cruise ships do have jails , called brigs, on board. Your ship's security officers do not tolerate fighting and other bad behavior and will detain anyone who is out of line on board.

Parents looking at a week's vacation at sea with the kids will be thrilled to know that the onboard kids clubs are complimentary from morning until about 10 or 11 p.m. at night.

However, with so many kids on board during these holiday weeks, you might find that lines are long to check kids in and out, or that activities might have to move to other areas of the ship if the dedicated youth spaces get too packed.

Spring break party cruises

spring break confidential cruises

For spring breakers who want to travel and party with hundreds of other college-age kids, look for travel agencies that run hosted spring break cruises during the most popular spring vacation weeks.

For example, College Party Cruise hand-picks the most fun cruise ships for the college crowd, books cabins to sell to as many as 1,000-plus 20-somethings and offers special events and discounts at bars in port to group members. You can have fun with your college besties, but you can also meet like-minded young adults from around the country and make new friends on your cruise.

Travel agencies like CPC make the planning easier because they bundle taxes and gratuities into your upfront cost and take the work out of picking the right ship and destination. Most cruises are short trips out of Florida. (Note: Even with these charter sailings, you must have one person in your cabin who is 21 or older.)

Best college spring break cruises

Royal caribbean.

spring break confidential cruises

CPC often charters Royal Caribbean ships for its college spring break cruises because they're huge, filled with thrilling attractions like rock climbing walls and surf simulators, and offer plenty of bars, nightlife venues and onboard entertainment for young adults.

Spring breakers should consider three- or four-night cruises to the Bahamas from Florida ports on the line's megaships, such as Independence of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas. You'll definitely want a stop at the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , with its water park, zip line and adults-only beach.

West Coasters might prefer three- to four-night cruises from California to Ensenada, Mexico, on Navigator of the Seas. Or, try a four- or five-night cruise from Galveston, Texas, on Mariner of the Seas to Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. We hear the margaritas are great.

Carnival Cruise Line

spring break confidential cruises

Carnival's "Fun Ships" are known for their themed bars, abundant and included casual dining (Guy Fieri's burgers and Shaq's fried chicken sandwiches, anyone?) and pool deck fun and games. College students will feel right at home in this casual atmosphere, especially when trip costs won't threaten to add to their student debt.

Three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas or four- and five-night Western Caribbean cruises from New Orleans, Galveston and various ports in Florida are ideal for college spring breakers, as they often include visits to cruise line private islands, various Bahamian ports, Mexico or Key West, Florida.

If you're out west for school, Carnival's three- and four-night Baja Mexico cruises to Ensenada and Catalina Island, California, will provide the same amount of fun in the sun.

The only potential downfall? Carnival requires guests under the age of 21 to travel with someone aged 25 or older.

Margaritaville at Sea

spring break confidential cruises

Margaritaville at Sea offers quick and cheap two-night cruises between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. Even better for spring breakers is that the drinking age is 18-plus while at sea and in the Bahamas, and guests need only be 18 to book a cruise (though you must be 21 or older if you wish to lengthen your trip with a cruise-and-stay package featuring a hotel stay in the Bahamas).

In 2025, the cruise line will add three- to five-night cruises to its roster, with a second ship based out of Tampa.

The Jimmy Buffett-themed ship knows that it's always "5 o'clock somewhere," perhaps at its 5 o'Clock Somewhere bar. Between beach breaks on Grand Bahama Island and beer breaks on board, don't miss the "Tales from Margaritaville" show, based on Buffett's book and featuring his greatest-hit songs.

Virgin Voyages

spring break confidential cruises

This relatively new cruise line will surely be a hit with spring breakers for one important reason: No kids are allowed. Virgin Voyages ' ships require guests to be 18 or older to sail, and programming has decidedly adult themes. You can get a tattoo on board , attend a drag show and get a little naughty at late-night pool parties.

Cruise fares aren't always the cheapest, but they include meals in all restaurants (which serve everything from Korean barbecue to Mexican tacos), plus Wi-Fi (an often pricey perk on other lines), nonalcoholic drinks (coffee, soda, juice), gratuities for the crew and fun and fabulous group fitness classes . You only have to worry about your bar bill.

To keep costs down, book a Social Insider cabin that sleeps four. Space is tight, but you're only in your cabin to shower and sleep.

Look for four- and five-night cruises on Virgin's Scarlet Lady to destinations like the line's private beach club on the Bahamian island of Bimini, Key West, the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Always a rebel, Virgin only recommends that one person in your group be 21 or older; anyone can book a cruise as long as they're 18 when the ship sets sail. The drinking age on board reflects that of the destination (it's 18-plus in international waters), so choose your itinerary carefully.

MSC Cruises

spring break confidential cruises

Skip the expensive spring break trip to Europe and instead take a quick Bahamas cruise with an international flair on MSC Cruises' MSC Divina, MSC Magnifica or MSC Seashore. The ships offer three- and four-night cruises to Nassau and Ocean Cay, MSC's private island , and attract a multinational, multilingual crowd. Also, MSC's fares are consistently affordable relative to other cruise lines.

There is not much to do on Ocean Cay other than soak up some sun on your choice of beaches, enjoy refreshing drinks at beachside bars and snack on burgers and french fries at beach shacks and barbecues around the island — the perfect way to decompress after a stressful semester. In Nassau, you could get your snorkel on or simply park yourself at Señor Frog's for the day. We recommend ordering some local conch fritters to help soak up all the alcohol you consume.

Back on board, MSC has some of the best pizza at sea, plus sushi and tacos if you feel like a splurge. Do an onboard bar crawl to find your favorite, or try out all the arcade and virtual reality experiences, including a Formula One race car simulator. If your epic spring break moves you to sing, know that MSC offers karaoke in myriad languages.

Best spring break cruises for families

Disney cruise line.

Whether you're going for a weeklong Caribbean cruise on Disney Magic or Disney Fantasy or a short Bahamas cruise on the new Disney Wish followed by half a week at Disney World, families know Disney will deliver an amazing spring break vacation.

And the options aren't just convenient to East Coasters. The line sails ships from Galveston, New Orleans and San Diego for family vacations to Mexico.

Disney Cruise Line's ships go above and beyond, with cabins designed for families to share, restaurants that double as entertainment venues so no one is ever antsy at dinner and, of course, plenty of opportunities to interact with your favorite Disney, Pixar and Marvel characters.

Families can splash in the pools together and zip down the water rides by day and then watch first-run Disney movies and the brand's famous musical shows together at night. While kids pilot the Millennium Falcon or attend Marvel Super Hero Academy in the ships' expansive kids club, parents can enjoy a night of fine dining at multiple adults-only restaurants or grab a drink at a "Star Wars"-themed bar.

Disney's Castaway Cay private island is a can't-miss port stop, with lots of beach day fun and an on-site barbecue buffet. And no matter where you sail in the Caribbean, Bahamas or Mexico, you know Disney will have shore excursions vetted specifically with families in mind.

While the college spring breakers gravitate toward Royal Caribbean's shorter cruises, families will want to book weeklong Caribbean and Bahamas trips on the line's largest ships at sea: Harmony of the Seas, Icon of the Seas , Oasis of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas . Most of the ships sail from Florida ports, but Harmony of the Seas cruises from Galveston.

These megaships feature enormous kids clubs and teen hangouts where kids can make friends while parents get a much-needed break. They also have plenty of fun spots for families to play together, including waterslides, escape rooms, mini-golf, rock climbing walls and carousel rides. The whole family can enjoy shows that include Broadway musicals, ice skating performances, high-diving acrobatic events and parades down the central indoor promenade of each ship.

Plus, Royal Caribbean's two private destinations — Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas and Labadee in Haiti — offer a mix of gorgeous beaches and attractions, ranging from mountain coasters to water parks, perfect for families. The other ports give families the opportunity to teach the kids to snorkel or kayak, enjoy boat rides and aquariums, or spend even more time playing together on the beach.

Families on spring break should check out Carnival's newest Vista and Excel Class ships because they cater to families more than any other ships in the fleet. All have Family Harbor cabins that come in a variety of sizes and prices. These rooms are designed for families and come with access to an exclusive lounge with games, snacks and concierge assistance.

On your sea days, the entire family will have a blast racing down waterslides, splashing in watery playgrounds, trying thrill rides like an onboard roller coaster and a suspended cycling ride, testing their fear of heights on a ropes course and playing rounds of basketball, foosball and pingpong. Fuel up with nonstop pizza and soft-serve ice cream.

When kids head off to the kids, tween and teen lounges for video games, socializing and organized activities, parents can slip off to the spa or the adults-only Serenity sun deck.

For a week's vacation, families have lots of choices. Carnival Horizon, Carnival Vista, Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras explore all over the Caribbean from Florida; Carnival Jubilee sails to the Western Caribbean from Galveston. Carnival Panorama offers West Coasters a cruise to Mexico from Long Beach, California. No matter where you go, you'll find plenty of beach time and water sports, plus active and cultural adventures ashore.

Norwegian Cruise Line

spring break confidential cruises

NCL offers its share of Caribbean and Bahamas sailings, but families looking for something different should consider the line for its weeklong Hawaii cruises aboard Pride of America.

Sailing weekly from Honolulu, the sailings hit all the top spots: the Big Island with access to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, an overnight visit to Maui where guests can catch a sunset or sunrise from atop Haleakala or go on whale watching excursions, and an overnight stop at Kauai to tour the stunning Waimea Canyon or cruise along the Napali Coast. That means you can see it all without packing and unpacking, changing hotels or figuring out transportation.

On board, the casual vibe means families don't have to worry about packing formalwear. Multiple dining venues offer the choice of when and where to eat; you won't find assigned tables or dining times here. Pride of America may not have the go-kart tracks and laser tag found on other Norwegian cruise ships, but you're really only using it as a floating home base for your Hawaiian exploration.

Bottom line

No matter which kind of spring break experience you're looking for, you'll find the perfect getaway at sea. College students can let loose with other young adults on easy and affordable trips, while parents can treat their kids to a memorable week of vacation.

Know the rules and prepare for crowds, and you'll be all set for a spring break that will make all your friends jealous.

Our 10 favorite spring break cruises

CruiseClout score: 20.0

March may be the month known for March Madness, but it's also the time of year for the annual ritual known as spring break! Time to trade the cold and snowy winter days for a week filled with sun, sand and relaxation.

For college students, StudentCity has put together a resource page  to let you know when your school's spring break will be. Some breaks start as early as this week while others run the week of March 11 or 18 or later.

Spring break isn't just for college kids, though. Younger kids get a week of school off around now, and their families often use it as an ideal time to take a family vacation to warmer climes.

Our 10 favorite spring break cruise vacations

There are two ways to do spring break as a cruiser: Find a cruise geared to the younger crowd during a spring break week. Or spend some time at a spring break destination before, during or after your cruise — most are near a cruise port.

Among the most popular hot spots: Ft. Lauderdale , Daytona Beach, Panama City Beach, Key West and Miami Beach  in Florida; Santa Monica and Venice Beach (both part of  LA metro ) and San Diego in California;  Cabo San Lucas , Cancun  and Puerto Vallarta , Mexico, and the Bahamas , Jamaica and lots of other islands in the Caribbean.

If it's too late for you to plan a spring break getaway for this year, it’s the right time to start planning one. In our opinion, a spring break cruise is far preferable to a “traditional” island resort. That's why we've put together this list of our 10 Favorite Spring Break Cruise Vacations .

Water sports, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and parasailing are all part of the action at Labadee, Royal Caribbean's 260-acre private beach resort on the north coast of Haiti.

Sail to the Caribbean on Harmony of the Seas

Enjoy a city on the sea on board this sweet royal caribbean ship.

Back when I was a young college student, I took a weeklong spring break cruise on Carnival Triumph with three friends. It was a fun-filled week spent exploring the Western Caribbean, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

For those skeptical travelers who aren’t sure whether a spring break cruise is right for them, we suggest Royal Caribbean’s new ship  Harmony of the Seas  (or her sister ships Allure of the Seas or  Oasis of the Seas ). Now the world’s largest cruise ship, Harmony offers seven different themed neighborhoods. Stroll the outdoor Boardwalk complete with a carousel and Aqua Theater or enjoy a quiet lunch in Central Park, a secluded green space in the center of the ship with boutique shops and restaurants. (See? There's more to spring break than Jägermeister and jello shots!)

Harmony and her sister ships offer a variety of dining options and Broadway entertainment. College kids, young adults and families will find something to enjoy on this ship, whether it's dancing, enjoying the nightlife at more than a dozen bars or hanging out with the DreamWorks characters. With the ship's itineraries to popular Caribbean ports in both the Eastern and Western Caribbean, travelers will also have plenty of onshore options. You can visit St. Maarten and San Juan, kick back at Royal's private island of Labadee or explore ancient Mayan ruins while docked in Cozumel . See Harmony of the Seas' itineraries .

Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas beach resort offers three vacation towers, plus reef and harbor side accommodations for your Caribbean vacation getaway.

Get your party on with Norwegian Sky

Mingle with singles on 3- and 4-day escapes to the bahamas.

For those who are looking to let loose, the three- and four-day Bahamas cruises on Norwegian Sky offer one of the best values in cruising. Perfect for any young adult looking for a party scene, the base fare for all Norwegian Sky cruises include Norwegian Cruise Line’s Ultimate Beverage Package. Yup, for as little as $150 a day, you have an open bar to enjoy (don't abuse it!) while sailing the waters off the coast of Florida. This ship also features Norwegian’s signature Freestyle dining , meaning no set dining times or table assignments at one of seven restaurants.

When traveling to the Bahamas, you can spend a day at the luxury resort Atlantis or swim with the dolphins at the Blue Lagoon. Four-day cruises on Norwegian Sky also stop at Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay . Here you can snorkel, parasail or just relax with a drink in your hand as the open bar also includes this private island. See Norwegian Sky's itineraries . Other Norwegian ships  hit Cancun , Cozumel , Puerto Rico  and destinations throughout the Caribbean.

Play on Bermuda's beautiful beaches when you cruise the Caribbean on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Break away to the Bahamas

Plenty of activities on a 7-day voyage on norwegian breakaway.

If you go to school or live on the East Coast of the U.S. and don’t want to fly anywhere for spring break, then how about making your way to New York for a seven-day Bahamas trip on Norwegian Breakaway ? Featuring a ropes course, a water park and an adults-only Spice H20 area, this ship offers plenty of fun for cruisers of all ages. With 24-hour dining, two Broadway shows, a dueling piano bar and an Ice Bar at sea, you don’t need to even leave the ship to have a good time — and you'll have plenty of snaps for your Facebook feed, Snapchat or Instagram.

If you do decide to venture off the ship in Nassau , you can relax at some of the best beaches, including the public Junkanoo Beach, within walking distance from the pier. Families can explore the amazing Ardastra Gardens and Zoo, where your kids will get to interact with the animals or take an island tour to see historic forts and the famous Queen’s Staircase. Here's where Norwegian Breakaway sails .

Some of the water activities along the shoreline in Cabo San Lucas, shot earlier this year during a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Ruby Princess.

Cruise the Mexican Riviera

Visit cabo, puerto vallarta & mazatlan aboard ruby princess.

Do something different and try the Mexican Riviera for your next Spring Break cruise. Princess Cruises’s  Ruby Princess takes cruisers to three ideal stops. Nothing says spring break like Cabo San Lucas , filled with miles of beautiful beaches and plenty of outdoor adventures like snorkeling and ziplines. (Cruiseable co-founder JD Lasica is there today aboard Holland America's Westerdam .) Couples will like taking a relaxing stroll along the picturesque Malecón waterfront in Puerto Vallarta . And the kids are sure to love a sea lion encounter at Vallarta Adventures. While in Mazatlán , you can enjoy world-class sports fishing or shop shop shop  in the Golden Zone.

Back on board Ruby Princess, enjoy a variety of dining options including the new Share restaurant from Chef Curtis Stone. The nightly Movies under the Stars, complete with popcorn, are a cruiser favorite, so snuggle up with your significant other and watch a movie on the large outdoor screen. Back inside, there are also numerous bars and nightly Broadway-style shows to get everyone in your travel party entertained. Here are Ruby Princess's itineraries .

Kitesurfing, or kiteboarding, on St. Lucia.

Prepare for a Latin adventure

Visit beaches, unesco world heritage sites & lush rainforests.

Instead of spending a week on the usual-suspects beaches of Florida, head directly to San Juan  for some Latin American flair on board Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas . With four different itineraries beginning in Puerto Rico , you have the chance to visit up to eight different islands, including St. Lucia , where you can gaze at the Pitons or go kitesurfing, or St. Kitts , where you can zipline through the jungle. Other stops include Barbados , Antigua  and more. Reserve some time to explore Puerto Rico as well, including the historic El Morro and La Fortaleza. Nature lovers can hike El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest overseen by the U.S. Forest Service.

In between these port-intensive stops with UNESCO World Heritage sites, beautiful beaches and lush rainforests, take in an ice show at the indoor skating rink or enjoy a parade down the Promenade, lined with shops, restaurants and bars. Mount the rock climbing wall or challenge the family to a round of mini-golf. During your cruise, don’t miss the adult game show the Quest and the Dancing Under the Stars pool deck party, complete with dancing, music and a midnight buffet. Here are Adventure of the Seas' upcoming sailings .

An experienced windsurfer catches some air on Aruba.

Head to Aruba & Curaçao

Take part in carnival vista's first spring break.

For spring break 2018, Carnival's newest ship,  Carnival Vista , offers cruisers eight-night cruises to the Southern Caribbean. Featuring some firsts at sea like an IMAX theater, the Skyride (a bike ride suspended over the pool deck) and the first brewery at sea for a contemporary cruise ship, Carnival Vista itself is a worthy destination. With Serenity, the adults-only retreat area, and its multifaceted kids programs, this ship caters to young and old, couples, singles and families. With Carnival’s recently upgraded Cheers program, cruisers can now pay one flat fee for unlimited alcoholic beverages, making the ship a great choice for those 21+.

Carnival Vista offers Caribbean itineraries that are as unique as the ship herself. Travel to the beautiful beaches of Aruba or take advantage of some of the world's best scuba diving off the coast of Bonaire . Swim with the stingrays or explore the historic downtown of Grand Turk and become engulfed in the local culture in La Romana, Dominican Republic, as you tour the countryside. See all of Carnival Vista's itineraries . Don't forget to send us photos!

Viking Star sits dockside, right in the heart of historic Kotor, Montenegro.

Enjoy some cultural immersion

Voyage on viking star to barcelona, kotor or monte carlo.

If you prefer cultural enrichment over tequila shots, then you should consider crossing the Atlantic. See some of the most historic European cities on a Mediterranean cruise on one of Viking Ocean’s new ships: Viking Star ,  Viking Sea  or the just-launched  Viking Sky  ( see her itineraries ). These premium cruise ships cost more, but they provide all-balcony accommodations featuring some of the largest cabins at sea. Dine at one of 11 restaurants without a fee for specialty dining, including beer and wine at each meal. Be advised, these are not party ships, and they're not suited to kids, but they're great for couples of all ages. These elegant mid-size vessels offer enrichment lectures, port guides and free shore excursions at each port as well as free ship-wide Wi-Fi, which will set you back on most other cruise lines.

While sailing the Mediterranean, you'll visit some of the most iconic and picturesque cities in the world. See the Colosseum and the Vatican during your stop in Rome . Tour wine country and sample some of the great local fare in Tuscany. Climb the ancient steps of Kotor , Montenegro. Gaze at the architectural beauty of the Basilica of the Holy Family in Barcelona or try your luck as you explore Monte Carlo and its famous casino.

A land iguana, yellowish in color, grows to more than a meter in length in the Galápagos.

Venture to another world: the Galapagos

Take a once-in-a-lifetime voyage aboard a celebrity ship.

Thousands of people discover the amazing Galapagos Islands each year aboard a cruise ship. While pricey, Celebrity Xpedition ’s weekly cruises to the Galapagos Islands are an all-inclusive trip, including pre-cruise accommodations, all meals and drinks on board, as well as expert guided shore excursions at the ports of call. A nature specialist holds seminars on the ship to further enhance your experience — this might just be the best classroom at sea. Joining Xpedition in the Galapagos are the smaller  Celebrity Xploration  and Celebrity Xperience , both of which join the fleet this month.

Enrichment is the goal of this spring break cruise. Learn about the region's diverse wildlife during the day and enjoy premium dining on this intimate megayacht at night. With only 100 guests, you'll make friends with nearly everyone on the expedition. While the amenities on board are limited, you'll receive five-star service from the award-winning Celebrity Cruises crew. You can unwind at the spa or enjoy some sun and panoramic views on the sun deck for a true spring break cruise feeling.

Other cruise lines that call on the Galapagos, some for lower prices, include Lindblad Expeditions , G Adventures and Silversea and its Silver Galapagos .

Kid Rock puts on an annual Chillin' the Most cruise toward the end of spring break.

Catch a spring break music cruise

Rock, jazz, blues, techno & oldies groups perform in 2018.

What could be better than listening to live performances by your favorite musical artist during spring break? How about rocking out with them on a cruise ship? During the month of March, lots of musical acts take to the high seas. Music festivals at sea feature meet and greets, trivia, special dining events and other fan exclusives.

Some options include  Legends of Rock Cruise , a 7-night sailing to the Western Caribbean on MSC Divina departing March 18; Kid Rock's Chillin' the Most Cruise , a 5-night sailing out of Tampa on Norwegian Jade departing April 4; and the  Carnival Live series of ship concerts and acts.

Head to Castaway Cay on the family-friendly Disney Magic.

Let Disney entertain the family

Head to the Bahamas & Disney's private resort on Disney Magic

If you're not keen on spending the entire week at Walt Disney World parks, then a land and sea vacation package might be the best compromise. Spend three or four days at the park and then head to Port Canaveral near Orlando for a Bahamas spring break cruise on the Disney Magic . Consistently rated as one of the best cruise lines, Disney Cruise Line caters to families. Rotate throughout your cruise through three distinct dining rooms that integrate Disney magic with superb multi-course dinners. The kids will love the children’s programs, and parents will love the alone time so they can relax and enjoy their spring break, too!

The Disney theme continues when you stop at their private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay . Relax in the adults-only Serenity Bay Beach and enjoy a beachfront massage while the kids engage in water sports, table top games and activities all coordinated by the cruise staff. Another option: Charter a boat to get a tour of the surrounding island with the kids. Here's a look at all upcoming Disney Magic cruises .
