Long-time favorite beach destinations like Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo, be warned: Cayo Santa Maria is the newest coastal hotspot in Cuba. White sand so fine you’ll think it’s sugar and a crop of some of the most impressive resorts in Cuba make Cayo Santa Maria – or Santa Maria Cay – a tiny slice of paradise you won’t want to leave.

As locals, we’ve visited what feels like every beach in Cuba, but Cayo Santa Maria is truly something special. Read on for all our local recommendations on the best things to do and places to stay in Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba , and how to get to this far-flung beach paradise.

Cayo Santa Maria

Located along Cuba’s beachy northern coast, Cayo Santa Maria is a stunning white sand island known as a cay. Together with neighboring cays like Cayo Las Brujas, Cayo Ensenachos, Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo, and Cayo Romano, this tiny island forms part of Cuba’s Jardines del Rey archipelago.

Named by early Spanish conquistadores in the 1500s in honor of King Ferdinand of Spain, the Jardines del Rey archipelago now forms one of the most important beach destinations in Cuba. These islands are home to the majority of Cuba’s best resorts , as well as a number of hotel rooms to rival the island’s premier beach destinations in Varadero and Cayo Largo del Sur .

Cayo Santa Maria is just ten miles (16km) long and just over one mile wide, so there isn’t much to it. However, with some of the most pristine beaches in the Caribbean and clear, shallow waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling, it’s one of the most incredible beach destinations in the country.

Visiting Cayo Santa Maria

Cayo Santa Maria wasn’t much more than an empty stretch of sand before the early 2000s when the island was identified for its incredible tourism potential, and a few first resorts and hotels began popping up. Now, it’s one of the major destinations for travelers in the Jardines del Rey archipelago.

While the island is still playing catchup with nearby cays like Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo when it comes to name recognition, Cayo Santa Maria has plenty to offer that makes it potentially even more appealing than its neighbors. Newer resorts, less crowded beaches , and arguably easier access to Havana make it one of the best beach destinations in Cuba .

Beaches in Cayo Santa Maria

Cayo Santa Maria is most famous for its incredible beaches and their accompanying beach resorts . As the island is wrapped in white sand, it has no lack of beaches to choose from. While most visitors stick to the beach at their resort, you can certainly enjoy beach-hopping in Cayo Santa Maria should you feel so inclined.

All beaches in Cuba are technically public beaches, meaning that you’re free to explore any beaches on Cayo Santa Maria or any other part of Cuba for that matter. However, keep in mind that the use of beach chairs, umbrellas, and any other kind of beach installation is reserved for resort guests.

Playa La Estrella

Playa La Estrella, located in the center of the island, has the distinction of being the longest beachfront in Cayo Santa Maria. This white sand beach stretches on for more than two miles (3.5 km) and is about as pristine as you can get.

Playa La Estrella is home to resorts like Royalton Cayo Santa Maria, Melia Las Dunas, and the Memories resorts, some of the best resorts in Cayo Santa Maria .

Playa Las Caletas

One of the shorter beaches in Cayo Santa Maria, Playa Las Caletas is particularly beautiful, with calm waters and a pristine beachfront. It sits just west of Playa La Estrella. This beach is home to Gran Muthu Cayo Santa Maria.

Playa Cañon

Playa Cañon is known as one of the few beaches in Cuba where you can find clothing-optional sunbathing, so be aware of this if you plan to visit.

The vast majority of visitors enjoy the beach with bathing suits on – just don’t be surprised if you find visitors taking advantage of this beach’s special designation.

Travel Essential

Don’t think about traveling to Cuba without a good  VPN (Virtual Private Network) . Using a VPN while connecting to the internet is an easy way to keep your personal information safe from hackers and trackers.  We’ve used  NordVPN  for years and couldn’t recommend it more – it’s a must for safety online, especially in Cuba.

Things To Do in Cayo Santa Maria

1. visit the delfinario.

One of the most popular activities for travelers looking to enjoy some time off of resort property is visiting Cayo Santa Maria’s delfinario – or, dolphinarium . Home to a number of dolphins as well as space for events and even a small restaurant, it’s an excellent facility offering experiences travelers tend to love.

The Delfinario offers a number of different experiences with dolphins, including dolphin shows and the opportunity to swim with dolphins. Sign up and inquire about transportation at your resort, as resort staff work closely with the Delfinario to organize visits. They can plan your entire experience.

Formally known as the Acuario Delfinario Cayo Santa Maria , the delfinario is located off of the causeway used to access Cayo Santa Maria, just before the turn-off point used by visitors to access Cayo Ensenachos .

2. Stroll Through Plaza La Estrella

While Cayo Santa Maria doesn’t have any true beach towns to speak of, Plaza La Estrella is a central spot on the island where visitors can shop for handicrafts and souvenirs and explore the island beyond the resort.

There are several small restaurants, cafes, and bars that even play live music. It’s the perfect place for a stroll, a snack, or passing an hour or two of shopping and browsing. Keep in mind that the area is purely for tourists, as there is no permanent population on Cayo Santa Maria. However, it’s charming nonetheless and perfect for those looking to take a break from the beach and the resort.

Visitors from the neighboring resorts – Royalton Cayo Santa Maria or Starfish Cayo Santa Maria – can easily walk from the resort to Plaza La Estrella. Otherwise, take a taxi from your resort or hotel, or hop on the island’s hop-on, hop-off bus if you’re so inclined.

3. Enjoy A Spa Day at Melia’s YHI Spa

Several of the resorts in Cayo Santa Maria offer spas and wellness treatments, but if you’re looking for something special or perhaps your hotel doesn’t offer a spa, consider booking at Melia’s YHI Spa Aguas Claras.

Melia’s YHI Spa Aguas Claras offers a number of treatments, including mud wraps, massages, exfoliation treatments, and manicures and pedicures . The spa and wellness area also includes access to a gym, jacuzzi, dedicated pool and lounge area, and more. It’s a wonderful facility among the best on the island.

4. Visit Santa Clara

If you’re traveling to or from Cayo Santa Maria via Santa Clara, consider spending a few hours or even an entire day exploring the city. While Santa Clara isn’t one of Cuba’s most famous destinations, it has a lot going for it, including being home to one of the island’s most important historical monuments.

Santa Clara is best known for being home to the mausoleum of Ernesto “Che” Guevara, the Cuban revolutionary who transformed the country and now lives on endless billboards and posters around Cuba and a million t-shirts around the world. His mausoleum is a popular destination in Cuba for history buffs and the curious alike and is well worth a visit.

In addition to visiting Che Guevara’s mausoleum, make sure to wander the historic center of town and take in some of the historic buildings. Santa Clara doesn’t have as charming of a historic center as towns like Cienfuegos or Trinidad , but it’s impressive nonetheless.

5. Visit the Untouched Playa de las Gaviotas

Most of Cayo Santa Maria’s beaches are now home to resorts and hotels – except for a precious few untouched spots that remain undeveloped and empty. Playa Las Gaviotas, on the far eastern edge of Cayo Santa Maria, is one of them.

To visit this untouched beach with powdery white sand, head just east of the Valentin Perla Blanca, where the main road cutting across the island ends. Here you’ll find the entrance to the island’s nature and wildlife refuge, which has a nature trail that takes visitors to the beach. It’s a refreshing distinction on the island, now populated with resorts.

Through the refuge, which has a $4 admission fee, you’ll find a nature trail leading to the beach. Expect to see wildlife like lizards and plenty of birds along the way. Alternatively, walk east from the beachfront of the Valentin Perla Blanca, and you’ll be able to access the beach as well.

Cayo Santa Maria – FAQ

Is cayo santa maria worth visiting.

Cayo Santa Maria is well worth visiting! If you’re looking for a spectacular beach escape in Cuba, Cayo Santa Maria should be one of the top destinations you’re considering for your trip.

The beaches in Cayo Santa Maria will amaze you, the resorts will impress you, and you’ll have an unforgettable vacation, whether you’re traveling with family or for a romantic couples getaway.

Keep in mind that Cayo Santa Maria is quite resort-centric, without a permanent population and with only hotel and resort accommodations to choose from. There are no “beach towns” here, meaning everything revolves around the hotels and resorts. It isn’t something that appeals to all travelers, but for those looking for a resort stay, it’s perfect.

Varadero or Cayo Santa Maria?

Deciding whether to choose Varadero or Cayo Santa Maria for your Cuban beach vacation? While both destinations offer great beaches, they’re actually very different. On the one hand, Varadero has much more going on, with busier beaches, activities, and events. Cayo Santa Maria, however, is much more secluded, laid-back, and natural.

Varadero is a true beach town, with numerous cafes, restaurants, and shops to choose from, as well as a much wider range of accommodations. In Varadero, you can find everything from basic room rentals to luxury beach houses and some of Cuba’s best resorts . In Cayo Santa Maria, you only have a few resorts to choose from and nothing to speak of in terms of shops or restaurants outside of the resorts.

Whether you choose Varadero or Cayo Santa Maria, you’re in for an incredible beach vacation. Both options are spectacular and offer some of the best beach experiences in Cuba – you really can’t go wrong.

Cayo Santa María: 5 excursions to admire nature

PLC_Aerial Photos_179_LR

Blue sea, sand and endless sky. The spectacular Cayo Santa María, one of the most coveted destinations in Cuba, once again offers you the opportunity to enjoy the best vacations of your life. To the beaches and resorts that have made it famous, excursions are added, designed to please every visitor – even those with the most demanding tastes. Do you want to know what they are? Keep reading!

Motonatura is the first proposal: how about joining an electric motorcycle caravan and touring the cay? With the assistance of specialized guides, you will get to the best places to discover the splendid tropical nature: the Aguada del Bagá trail, the Forest Artists trail, the Golden Hair Cave trail… Birds, landscapes, small mammals, flowers Bright colors await you at every stop, so our advice is: look at everything, don’t miss a detail and if you can take photos or videos, even better! The adventure in the forest is followed by relaxation: Motonatura ends at noon, with a refreshing swim on Las Gaviotas beach and an exquisite Cuban lunch at Las Terrazas Tourist Plaza.

Do you need more? The Caguanes Tour will take you to a region declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO: the National Park of the same name, which actually occupies a much larger area of land than Cayo Santa María, as it extends to the Yaguajay coast in the big Island. Early in the morning, a bus will transfer you from your hotel to the Marina Gaviota to board the catamarans that sail through the channels between the cays. There will be stops for snorkeling in the coral reef, snacks and an open bar on board the catamaran, an interesting visit to the caves of Cayo Caguanes and free time for you to enjoy a swim in the megano of Boca Chica. You can take your partner, your children, your friends …

Caguanes Tour

Now imagine yourself sitting comfortably on top of a double-decker bus. Feel the breeze, the heat of the sun … the Panoramic Tour is a trip through the key that will allow you to see all its facilities: hotels, tourist places and the fantastic dolphinarium where it ends. Although a show of these intelligent cetaceans is already included in the tour, perhaps you will be encouraged to dive with them, participate in their tricks, ask them to pose for a photo: it is an experience that is really worth it and we assure you that you will not regret!

The options do not end here, because thinking of the comfort of yours, the Family Getaway has been designed. It consists of traveling aboard comfortable jeeps to get to know the lagoon that is home to migratory birds that arrive each year from North America (with a little luck you will see complete flocks), the Cueva del Pelo de Oro (that it is not very big, but it is very interesting due to its geological formation) and finally Las Gaviotas beach … of course, the beach for your family could not miss! Did you already write it down in your agenda?

Playa Las Gaviotas

Fifth and last option –for now- is the Cayo Santa María Adventure, which offers you first a boat trip to the most virgin corners of the key, then a jeep tour to the reserves where valuable species of regional flora and fauna are protected. If you are a nature lover, this option will be perfect for you, since you will also have specialized descriptions about each plant or animal that you discover, as well as explanations about its care and handling. At the end, you will take as a souvenir the best images of the Cuban coastal ecosystems.

What do you think would be your favorite excursion? To answer the question there is no other choice but to try them all! Ask your travel agent or the sales bureau of your hotel, invite your travel companions and launch yourself into the discovery. You will want to repeat, for sure!

excursion cuba cayo santa maria

There are four small islands in the middle of the north coast of Cuba. These islands are located near the main island in the Atlantic Ocean and welcome vacationers with exclusive beaches. The Cayos Ensenachos and Santa Maria are connected to the mainland by a causeway.

excursion cuba cayo santa maria

Fantastic beaches

All the cayos have snow-white beaches, crystal-clear and shimmering turquoise sea, rich sea life with impressive coral reefs full of colorful tropical fish. The bays of the islands are home to many water birds, such as flamingos. Of course, there are also luxurious hotel resorts on all the islands.

Cayo Santa Maria & Cayo Ensenachos

Hotel Villa Las Brujas

In the northeast of the island lies the Gaviota Beach . It borders with the Cayo Santa María Nature Reserve, which is covered with lush vegetation that provides a habitat for numerous species of birds. The Pueblo La Estrella , a complex of buildings in a central location, includes an artisan market, restaurants and bars. The Delfinario Cayo Santa María features dolphin and sea lion shows.

Sights & Activities

  • Various activities are offered at the Delfinario Cayo Santa Maria . It is possible to book a guided tour directly from the hotel. A special offer is swimming with the dolphins, where small groups of visitors go into the water with the animals. About 30 minutes in the water with dolphins costs 75 USD, including transfer. Alternatively, you can come to the delphinium on your own and pay an entrance fee of 5 USD. The delphinium can be reached comfortable by sightseeing bus. Taking photos during the show costs an additional 5 USD. If you book a swim, you can also have photos or a video taken for an additional 36 USD.
  • Gaviota Tours offers a day trip on a catamaran . The excursion starts in the morning around 8 am from the hotel. After the bus transfer to the pier, the catamaran will take you to a dream beach on a lonely cay. After an hour, the tour continues with a visit to the delphinium, where a show can be seen. After lunch - usually there is seafood (with lobster, crabs and fish) - you can snorkel in a coral reef for about an hour. During the cruise, you will be given free drinks. Around 5pm, you will return to the hotel, just in time for dinner. The catamaran excursion is offered every day and is priced at 80 USD for adults. Children have a discount and pay 47 USD.
  • The Jeep-Safari starts in the morning at 8 am at your hotel. By bus, it goes to the small town of Caibarién , where the 4x4 vehicles are handed over. A tour follows over rural roads, with panoramic views of the countryside. A farm will be visited. For lunch, a Creole meal of roast pork is served. After lunch, there is a possibility to take a swim in a local river. Later you will return to Caibarién and by bus to the hotel. The jeep safari is offered daily and priced with 57 USD for adults and 42 USD for children. The vehicles are filled with four people. Those who are willing to pay a surcharge of 35 USD / per free seat can drive alone. To drive alone, a driver's license must be present, all insurances are included. It is an ideal excursion to experience something more authentic as the beach and the resorts.

Getting there

excursion cuba cayo santa maria

On the way to the Cayos

If you arrive by rental car, you will use the connecting road that crosses the shallow bay. The road crosses numerous bridges and reaches the Cayo Santa Maria after about 50 km. A toll of 2 USD must be paid in order to use this road.

Getting around

During the day, a modern double-decker bus runs between the hotels and the other points of interest. A ride will cost you 2 USD. The buses are open on top, so you should not forget your sunscreen and also bring enough water with you.

In addition, there are cabs. A ride on the Cayos usually costs no more than 10-15 USD. There are also vintage cabs available, which are only insignificantly more expensive as the regular cabs.

Everybody that would like to make a detour to the mainland, can either take a driver or a rental car. If you don't want to drive by yourself, expect to pay around $100 USD for half a day and $150 USD for a full cab day. If you prefer to rent your own vehicle, take a look at our guide on how to rent a car in Cuba.

There is a small airport on Cayo Las Brujas. However, the airport handles only a few small planes. Those who have booked a package deal will in most cases fly to Santa Clara and be taken from there by bus to the Cayos.

In the region there are a number of worth seeing tourist destinations, which can be reached by rental car but also by cab.

  • When leaving the cayos, you will first reach the small town of Caibarién . The town has a nice historic center, which is located close to the beautiful Parque La Libertad . Northeast of the city center there is a beautiful beach on an island. The place is perfect for package holidaymakers who want to get a taste of Cuban everyday life.
  • A few kilometers inland lies Remedios , one of Cuba's oldest towns with over 500 years of history. The town is known for its picturesque historic center. Important buildings bear witness to the former importance of the city. During the 18th and 19th century, Remedios achieved high prosperity through the cultivation of coffee, cocoa, sugar cane and tobacco. In mid to late December, the town hosts one of Cuba's most important festival, they so called Parrandas de Remedios .
  • Between the two towns is the Museum of the Sugar Industry, the Museo de Agroindustria Azucarera, located. The museum gives a great insight into the production of the commodity that has been so important in Cuba's development. There are also a number of old steam railroads to visit.
  • Further destinations for excursions are the towns of Santa Clara , Sancti Spiritus and Trinidad . Another treasure of breathtaking nature can be found in the close Sierra del Escrambray .

9 Best Day Trips From Havana: A Local's Guide [2024]

T here's no place on Earth quite like Havana, Cuba. However, travelers who look just beyond the bounds of Cuba's awe-inspiring capital will find that Havana offers just a small taste of all the best things to do in Cuba .

As locals, we've had the pleasure of exploring every inch of Havana and taking all the best Havana day trips to explore the areas around the city. In this ultimate guide to the best day trips from Havana, you'll find our top (local!) recommendations for the best day trips from Havana that you just can't skip when planning your Havana itinerary .

Best Day Trips From Havana

If your time in Havana allows you to get out of the city for a bit, you're in for a real treat. Are you looking for some quick recommendations for the best day trips from Havana? These are our top picks:

  • Best Beach Day Trip from Havana: Varadero
  • Best Adventurous Day Trip from Havana: Soroa and Las Terrazas
  • Best Family-Friendly Day Trip from Havana: Havana's Countryside

There's nothing more popular than the day trip from Havana to Varadero , the closest beach to Havana that is among the nicest beaches in Cuba . While ideally, you'd want to spend at least one night in Varadero, it's more than doable in a day and the perfect way to visit the beach if your Cuba itinerary includes just cities like Havana.

However, if you're looking for something different, there are plenty of incredible day trips from Havana to consider. Read on for more details about how to enjoy some of our favorite Havana day trips.

Havana Day Trips

1. varadero.

Best Beach Day Trip from Havana

Just over two hours from Havana, Varadero is one of the nicest beaches in Cuba (and one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean), making it the very best day trip from Havana. Whether you're looking to just arrive and find a spot on the beach to spend a day, or you're looking forward to snorkeling, exploring caves, or anything in between, Varadero is the perfect place.

With miles and miles of pristine beachfront, it's very easy to have an enjoyable beach day at Varadero without staying at a resort, which isn't the case at every beach. Rent beach chairs and umbrellas, or simply find a shady area and enjoy Cuba's favorite beach town - you'll quickly realize why it's such a popular destination in Cuba with travelers and locals alike.

While Varadero is great for day trips from Havana, we also love Varadero for more than just a day trip . The beach is just so perfect, and there's so much to see and do around Varadero that as soon as you arrive, you'll wish you had more time here.

2. Soroa and Las Terrazas

Best Adventurous Day Trip from Havana

If you're looking for something a little more exciting than sitting on a beach, taking a day trip from Havana to Soroa and Las Terrazas is for you. Hidden within the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve, these areas are popular escapes from the city for locals and visitors alike , home to great hiking trails and a plunging waterfall with a swimming hole perfect for cooling off on a hot day in Cuba.

Soroa's Salto del Arco Iris ( Rainbow Falls ) is a stunner and a major attraction for visitors; this towering 72-foot (22-meter) waterfall surrounded by palms and forests is just what you'd expect from a rainforest waterfall. Less than a mile round trip hike makes it accessible for almost everyone , with a great swimming hole, stunning jungle landscape, and impressive views.

Another great stop while in Soroa is  Cafetal Buenavista.  Built in 1801, Cafetal Buenavista is the  oldest coffee plantation in Cuba . This place has a  magnificent view  over the rest of the area and, of course,  good coffee .

The area is easily accessible from Havana by bus - make sure to catch a bus from Havana to Viñales that makes a stop at Las Terrazas, as not all do. Alternatively, take a guided excursion from Havana to Soroa and Las Terrazas for even easier transport.

3. Havana's Countryside

Best Family-Friendly Day Trip from Havana

If you're traveling with kids and looking for an easy and engaging day trip from Havana, there's no better place to visit than Havana's countryside. Hassle-free, quick transportation to the countryside and engaging, kid-friendly activities like farm visits and time to explore are a winning combination.

Here you'll get to see an entirely different side of the city. Spend the day touring through the countryside before visiting local farms and learning about local organic agriculture before tasting some of the best, most authentic dishes you'll try in Cuba. We know because we've done the same thing with family in the United States visiting family in Cuba; it's a total highlight of a trip to Cuba and one that you won't forget.

Plus, most Havana countryside tours are half-day excursions within half an hour of the center of the city, which means they're a great addition to a short Havana itinerary and leave you plenty of time for sunset drinks and dinner before heading out for the evening.

4. Playas del Este

Located just on the outskirts of Havana, a cluster of beaches known collectively as Playas del Este - the beaches of the East - are some of the most popular day trip spots outside of Havana , drawing endless locals and visitors alike. With quick and affordable transportation, you can be on the beach in under half an hour, enjoying a drink at a beach bar or on the sand under an umbrella.

Playas del Este comprises a few beaches, including these:

  • Santa Maria

The nicest beaches in the area of Playas del Este are Marazul or Santa Maria. These beaches have the nicest sand and clearest water.  With a good amount of transportation options to get you here from Havana and great places to eat, and even accommodations nearby if you want to spend the night, they’re the perfect beach day (or long weekend) getaway.

Don't get us wrong, Playas del Este are fantastic beaches, stellar even, it's just that with the postcard-perfect, award-winning beaches around Cuba at Varadero and on Cuba's northern cays it's hard for anything else to compare. While we always recommend Varadero over these beaches if it's possible for you to get here, don't worry - you'll have an incredible beach day either way.

Just two hours west of Havana, the small town of Viñales is in the heart of the countryside and on the edge of one of the most impressive landscapes in all of Cuba. A major destination for hiking , adventure sports, and farm-to-table cuisine, Vinales is one of the very best day trips from Havana - read our Havana to Vinales Day Trip Guide to see why!

Home to the impressive Viñales Valley and national park, the stunning area of Viñales is marked with impressive mountain-like limestone karsts that shoot dramatically from the valley for a totally unique landscape - it's a site you need to see to believe.

On day trips from Havana, you can take a horseback riding excursion through the valley to one of Cuba's best tobacco plantations or take in the views over a local meal and drinks at Balcón del Valle. Learn about local tobacco production and how Cuba's world-famous cigars are made, or just enjoy the incredible views; either way, Viñales has a lot to impress.

Transport is relatively easy by taking a bus from Havana, though Vinales is just far enough from Havana that a day trip excursion to Viñales is well worth it for hassle-free, comfortable travel.

6. Sierra del Rosario

Located between Havana and Viñales, the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve and mountain range is one of the most beloved ecotourism spots and natural gems in Cuba. While most travelers that visit the area stick to Las Terrazas and Soroa, the area has so much more to offer than just these areas.

Proper day trips from Havana to Sierra del Rosario can look like hiking to stunning viewpoints , world-class birdwatching in areas with hundreds of species of birds, many endemic, and visiting historic coffee plantations. Make sure to visit the famous orchid gardens (Orquideario) to see over 700 international species of orchids, along with over 130 species native to Cuba.

Transport is easiest by taking a private or shared taxi directly from Havana or taking a bus from Havana to Viñales and getting off at the Las Terrazas stop to explore from there. You'll need transport to properly explore all the best parts of the biosphere reserve, so most travelers opt for day trips from Havana with transport included.

7. Yumurí Valley

Located on the outskirts of Matanzas, the Yumurí Valley is a lush, beautiful area of many travelers just drive through the way to Varadero, missing out on all this impressive valley has to offer. The jaw-dropping view of the valley from the Mirador de Bacunayagua is just the start.

Take a jeep tour through the valley, float down the river, and explore ranches with pineapples and tropical fruits; it's an off-the-beaten-path experience that feels ages away from nearby Havana and Varadero.

You'll find a lot of dedicated Yumurí Valley day trip excursions actually start from Varadero, as many visitors love to combine a visit to the valley with excursions to snorkeling destinations nearby , which fits perfectly with a beachy trip to Varadero. However, you can also find drivers from Havana more than willing to take you. Or, combine a visit with an overnight to Varadero if you can!

10+ Best Things To Do in Matanzas, Cuba

8. Cayo Levisa

If Varadero sounds a little too popular and built-up for your tastes, consider taking an excursion to Cayo Levisa , one of the white sand cays located west of Havana in the Pinar del Rio province . Almost entirely undeveloped and untouched, it's perfect for a disconnected beach day.

Located about two hours west of Havana, Cayo Levisa is known for its pristine white beaches and legendary snorkeling and diving, boasting incredible reefs and 17th- and 18th-century shipwrecks just offshore. Only accessible via a once-daily ferry that departs from the tiny village of Palma Rubia (between 9 AM and 10 AM every day), Cayo Levisa can feel like a bit of a trek, but it's well worth it.

Cayo Levisa used to be a popular overnight destination with one basic but charming hotel perched on the best beach on the island. However, after the hotel shuttered during the pandemic, it's more popular as a day trip destination from either Havana or Viñales (about an hour and a half away). Or, spend a night at one of the basic casa particular guesthouses in Palma Rubia on the coast to extend your stay.

9. Cayo Jutias

Just a bit further from Havana than nearby Cayo Levisa, the white sand islet of Cayo Jutias is another one of the untouched and undeveloped beach destinations that far too few travelers get the chance to experience. A famous beach covered with spiky red starfish and white sand shores hidden among mangrove forests make the island truly something special.

Unlike Cayo Levisa, Cayo Jutias is connected to mainland Cuba via a causeway, making it more easily accessible. However, the drive from Havana can be a doozy, at around three and a half hours along sections of somewhat bumpy roads.

While Cayo Jutias is technically within day trip distance from Havana, it makes for a much better day trip from Viñales , which is just over an hour away. Many travelers interested in visiting Cayo Jutias and Viñales find it easy to find a car from Havana to take them to Cayo Jutias for the day before leaving them in Viñales.
