Evita charts the young and ambitious Eva Peron’s meteoric rise to sainthood. Set in Argentina between 1934-1952, the Tony-winning musical follows Eva Duarte on her journey from poor illegitimate child to ambitious actress to, as wife of military leader-turned-president Juan Peron, the most powerful woman in Latin America, before her death from cancer at age 33.

Evita’s memorable “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” was recorded and released in 1976 followed by the complete rock opera concept album, which went gold. The stage production opened on June 21, 1978 at the Prince Edward Theatre in London with Elaine Paige in the title role and Joss Ackland as her formidable Juan Perón.

Following stints in Los Angeles and San Francisco, Evita premiered on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre on 25th September 1979. Evita won an impressive seven 1980 Tony Awards including Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical of the year. In 1981, the Evita cast recording was awarded a Grammy Award.

Productions of Evita have been performed all over the world, including performances in Austria, Spain, Mexico and South Africa. A major 1996 film adaptation starred Madonna in the title role and Antonio Banderas as Che. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one for Best Original Song (“You Must Love Me”).

A revival of the show opened at London’s Adelphi Theatre in 2006, with Argentinean actress Elena Roger as Eva. The production ran until May 2007 and was nominated for a number of awards, including a nomination for Elena Roger as Best Actress In A Musical at the 2006 Olivier Awards. The production transferred to Broadway at the Marquis Theatre in 2012 with Elena Roger reprising her role and Ricky Martin as Che.

Based on true events, Evita tells the story of Eva Perón’s rags-to-riches life as she goes from poor provincial child to First Lady of Argentina. A champion of the working-class descamisados, she uses popularity and politics to serve her people – and herself. Both a beloved and controversial (and even hated) figure, Eva’s influence has left a lasting legacy on an entire country. Featuring some of musical theatre’s most iconic songs, including “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina,” this musical masterpiece won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The 1996 film adaptation was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning for Best Original Song.

evita musical tour 2022

Tim Rice has worked in music, theatre, and films since 1965 when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession – musical theatre. Their first collaboration was based on the life of Dr. Thomas Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist, The Likes of Us . Their next three works together were much more successful – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita .

Tim has since worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John ( The Lion King, Aida ), Alan Menken ( Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast ), Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson ( Chess ), and Stuart Brayson ( From Here to Eternity ). He has also written with Freddie Mercury, Burt Bacharach and Rick Wakeman among others.

As an EGOT, he is one of only 17 people in the world to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award, was knighted by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1994, and is the proud owner of a boxer dog and two dozen chickens.

Andrew Lloyd Webber

Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1969) to Cinderella (2021), his work has been consistently seen on world stages. Before the COVID pandemic hit, Lloyd Webber had shows continually running in the West End for 48 years and on Broadway for 41. When Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock , CATS and The Phantom of the Opera, he equaled Rodgers & Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.

Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects such as the Music In Secondary School Trust and commissioning research into diversity in theatre.

Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published by Harper Collins in March 2018.

evita musical tour 2022

Michelle Aravena stars in “Evita” as Eva Peron, married to Argentine President Juan Peron (Sean MacLaughlin, right) and questioned by the skeptical Che (Richard Bermudez).

Brett Beiner

At nearly 45 years old, “Evita” shows little signs of aging in the glittering, provocative staging director-choreographer Marcia Milgrom Dodge has created for Oakbrook Terrace’s Drury Lane Theatre. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice track Eva Duarte’s meteoric rise from impoverished childhood to Argentina’s First Lady, concluding the loosely biographical story with Eva’s death in 1952. But even though “Evita” ends in the distant past, Dodge’s staging feels eerily of-the-moment. And under Valerie Maze’s music direction, the lush, intricate score has never sounded better.

Dodge has changed both the first and the final scenes that bookend the show. Traditionally, “Evita” opens in a movie theater, the film halted for a news bulletin announcing the death of Eva Peron, “Evita” according to the affectionate nickname bestowed on her by the masses. The audience’s first glimpse of Evita is usually as she’s being borne in a casket to the thumping strains of a dirge.

Dodge begins in a tango hall, the dancers’ limbs twining around each other like snakes. Evita (Michelle Aravena in a powerhouse performance) doesn’t make her first entrance in a coffin. Instead, she enters in that resplendent white dress, her arms arced toward the heavens in an image that’s become a shorthand for the show. It’s a bold, captivating and startling way to begin.

From there, “Evita” fills in the bullet points of Eva’s life: Her father had another, much wealthier family. When he died, they ordered Eva and her mother be “kept out of sight” at the funeral. Dodge shows the impact of the rejection through the eyes of “Young Evita” (a deeply expressive Nina Poulimas), leading the audience to make the connection between Eva’s childhood trauma and her politically astute connection with the working class.

By 15, Eva is hardened enough to seduce a mediocre tango player (an appropriately oily Paul Aguirre) and follow him to Buenos Ares where — per Rice and Webber — she sleeps her way into acting jobs, radio hosting gigs and eventually the grand prize, political up-and-comer Gen. Juan Peron (Sean MacLaughlin, as sinister as he is charismatic).

Nina_Poulimas__Michelle_Aravena._Photo_by_Brett_Beiner.jpg

The trauma endured by young Evita (Nina Poulimas, left) helps the grown-up Evita (Michelle Aravena, right) relate to the working class.

Peron becomes president in no small thanks to Eva’s galvanizing presence and nerves of steel. It would be a great love story had the two not been fascists. Peron’s thoughts on voting — that having to win a majority is “inconvenient” and “there are other ways of establishing authority” — throw the dictatorial tendencies of his military regime into stark relief.

So does Che (Richard Bermudez), the only one on stage who confronts Evita with the fact that under her leadership, Argentina floundered. Che circles Evita like a hornet, constantly reminding her that instead of helping or empowering the country’s poor, she merely charmed them.

Webber’s score demands a lot from the triumvirate of Che, Evita and Juan, and each of them is more than up to the task at Drury Lane. Bermudez’s Che is like an angry rock god, turning “And the Money Kept Rollin’ In” into an electrifying, sonic snarl that stops the show and could fill an arena. Aravena’s performance is both steely-eyed and heart-breaking, the latter when she’s pragmatically sleeping her way to the top or emptying the coffers of her “Foundation,” the former when she remembers the scars of childhood.

MacLaughlin and Aravena have a crackling chemistry between them and it’s never more palpable than when Evita first takes the microphone at one of Peron’s campaign rallies. You can see both of them simultaneously realizing how powerful they are together. Dodge also emphasizes Evita’s threat to the machismo culture of Peron’s military-backed government. When they spit that Evita’s a “bitch” and a “slut” in “Peron’s Latest Flame,” the men are doing push-ups. For “The Art of the Possible,” they’re in a drum line.

“Evita” usually ends with a perplexing line about how her body disappeared for years, setting the audience up with a cliffhanger that’s never resolved. Dodge just lops the line off. We end where we started, in the tango hall where Evita is dead, but the scorching impact of her life goes on.

Evita at Nederlander Theatre

Evita

TIM RICE and ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER's Tony Award-winning musical returns at last! Eva Peron used her beauty and charisma to rise meteorically from the slums of Argentina to the presidential mansion as First Lady. Adored by her people as a champion for the poor, she became one of the most powerful women in the world - while her greed, outsized ambition and fragile health made her one of the most tragic. EVITA tells Eva's passionate and unforgettable true story, and features some of theater's most beautiful songs, including "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and "High Flying, Adored." Don't miss the stunning new production of EVITA, directed by MICHAEL GRANDAGE and choreographed by ROB ASHFORD, that Channel 4 New York calls "THE HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN!"

Evita Reviews

Chicago Tribune - Somewhat Recommended

"...Although Grandage is a director who rarely misses, his “Evita” has issues, which can be boiled down to it being an overly stolid and cautious production, really. It's a show insufficiently fueled with grit and sexuality, although the road version moves quickly and employs less statesmanlike scenery to get in the way. I was not privy to the creative process, but the result looks as if Grandage and his collaborators all were a bit too worried about pleasing the high-profile writers with a show that would ennoble their work (maybe as compensation for having cast Ricky Martin as Che in New York) and not worried enough about kicking the show in the guts and making it cry out anew. For anyone with the Hal Prince original still in their head, there will be some disconnects, although what worked some 30 years ago would not look so hot now. A great new “Evita” is still in the future."

Time Out Chicago - Recommended

"...As Eva, Caroline Bowman meets the punishing demands of Lloyd Webber's score admirably, but rarely seems to reach out to connect with us, as she must if we're to get the "star quality" that endeared her to the Argentinian poor from which she rose. (Desi Oakley serves as an alternate Eva at some performances.) Rob Ashford's Tony-nominated choreography, which finds umpteen variations on the tango, is impressively executed, and the imposing sets and glittering costumes (both by Christopher Oram) contribute to an attractive, enjoyable package, with ear-pleasing renditions of the show's well-known numbers ("Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall," "Rainbow High"). Yet Grandage's production, like Eva the character, falsely equates glamour with power. It's an attractive diversion, but it's not changing anybody's lives."

ShowBizChicago - Highly Recommended

"...Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has retooled his score a bit, especially through the orchestrations which are more period appropriate. For this Chicago outing, the orchestra in the pit was sensational with some of the best trumpets I have ever heard. Also gone is Larry Fuller’s choreography, which artfully pitted the middle class against the military and aristocracy. Choreographer Rob Ashford’s staging is tango infused which though initially engaging, gets a bit overused midpoint though the production. Christopher Oram’s luscious set, beautifully lit by Neil Austin gives the show an authentic architectural feel making the balcony scene a visual triumph."

ChicagoCritic - Recommended

"...I like this show as the cast got everything out of Webber’s score. While not a ‘great’ show, this production of Evita is as good anEvitaas you’ll find. If you’ve never seen this classic pop opera show, get to the Oriental Theatre soon, it only runs until October 6, 2013. You’ll cry for Argentina."

Around The Town Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...“Evita” is the inspiration of lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Weber. It began as a rock opera concept album in 1976, opened as a musical at London’s West End in 1978, and premiered on Broadway in 1979 to rave reviews, earning 7 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the first British production to do so. Since then, this magnificent work has been performed on stages large and small around the world and it remains one of the most popular musicals of all time."

Chicago Theatre Review - Highly Recommended

"...While original director Michael Grandage has neglected most of the humor found in the original production, this is a sound version of Webber's beloved early collaboration with lyricist Tim Rice. With haunting songs like "Don't Cry for me Argentina," "High Flying Adored," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" (nicely sung by Krystina Alabado as the Mistress) and "On This Night of a Thousand Stars," this production is in every way a respectable "Rainbow Tour.""

Huffington Post - Recommended

"...While this tour needs some time to find its footing and grit, there are many assets, including a sizable orchestra and thrilling new orchestrations, that make this a worthy viewing. Ashford's athletic and always-in-motion ensemble choreography (his trademark) works well here, helping propel the action forward."

Andrew Lloyd Webber (Music) has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1969) to Cinderella (2021), his work has been consistently seen on world stages. Before the COVID pandemic hit, Lloyd Webber had shows continually running in the West End for 48 years and on Broadway for 41. When Sunset Boulevard joined School Of Rock , CATS and The Phantom Of the Opera, he equalled Rodgers & Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. Lloyd Webber owns seven London theatres, including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Over the past three years the latter has been completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings has meant that considerable work has been undertaken across his theatre portfolio during the pandemic, including the complete remodelling and reseating of the Gillian Lynne.

Elle is so grateful to be back in her second home, creating and doing what she loves most. Endless gratitude to Brett for his trust and thoughtful guidance.

Tim Rice (Lyrics) has worked in music, theatre, and films since 1965 when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Tim founded his own cricket team in 1973, which has now played over 750 matches, and was president of MCC, founded in 1789, in 2002. He crops up here and there in all branches of the media, drawing on his extensive knowledge of the history of popular music. As an EGOT, he is one of only 17 people in the world to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award, was knighted by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1994, and is the proud owner of a boxer dog and two dozen chickens.

Lyrics by Tim Rice. Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s  Evita  charts the rags-to-riches rise of the First Lady of Argentina, who won the love of her countrymen after marrying military leader-turned-president Juan Peron. Set in Buenos Aires between 1934-1952, the musical follows Eva Duarte Peron on her journey from fatherless child to ambitious actress to the most powerful woman in Latin America—and, eventually, to a saint-like figure after her death from cancer at age 33. The events in Evita’s life are presented in song and editorialized on by the show’s narrator, Che

Emma Hatton stars as Eva Perón in Bill Kenwright’s acclaimed production of the legendary musical, Evita. Following the true story of Eva Perón, wife of former dictator Juan Perón, the show charts her rise from humble beginnings to becoming a revered ‘spiritual leader of the nation’. A multi-award winning musical, Evita features a classic score, with show-stoppers such as “You Must Love Me”, “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina”. Playing at the Phoenix Theatre for a limited 12 week season, don’t miss out on the theatrical event of the summer!

Simply fabulous!! Emma, Gian and the rest of the cast were just brilliant. I remember my mum buying the original soundtrack in 1978 and I used to sing along when I was 10 years old. Never made drama school!! Loved loved loved the show, thank you!!!

Wonderful… Especially Eva and Che! Great performance. Unforgettable! Loved it.

I was fortunate enough to see the original Evita and was pleased when my daughter bought tickets to see the performance last Saturday evening. She had grown up listening to th album so knew all the songs. I loved it just as much second time round. You can’t fail to be swept up with the dancing and the music. The songs are magical. Have been playing them all week. It is also a haunting story for those who don’t know it. What really put the icing on the cake was that we decided to go in to the Chipotle restaurant, next to the Phoenix theatre, for a late supper (very tasty) and my daughter suddenly looked animated and said ‘look to right’. Isn’t that Che. I looked and she was right. He had come in straight after the show to get something to eat. We let him finish his meal (well most of it) and as we were going past him on the way out we decided to tell him how much we had enjoyed the show. What a lovely unaffected man. So genuine and very happy to talk to us. Perfect fit to play Che with his Latin good looks. I would have joined his revolution any day! I hope the show does another world tour. One of Lloyd Webber’s best musicals in my opinion.

A wonderful and much enjoyed performance – I first saw Evita back in June 1978 and subsequently was lucky to see other productions of Evita including one in New York. But this one is the best by far – both in terms of the cast and presentation.

I have seen countless shows but this blew me away BRAVO such talent and not forgetting the musicians BRAVO to them too.

I have seen other productions of Evita and was never overly impressed, THIS production blew me away. I was laughing, I was in tears (and all for the right reasons!) and I was completely in awe of Emma Hatton (Eva) – she was absolutely captivating throughout. Gian Schiaretti was also terrific – great vocals and captured the perfect sarcasm and pessimism of Che. It is a great production, great story telling and also a good history lesson for those that don’t know of Argentina in that era. I hope to see again before the end of the run.

Have seen this show when it was on tour, the cast are brilliant, there are some great voices on that stage, grab a ticket you won’t be disappointed.

An absolute must see. A wonderful performance this evening from the entire cast. Special mentions to the Eva & Che. I’ve waited so many years to see this show and it did not disappoint. Congratulations to you all Acknowledgements must continue to go to Tim Rice for his incredible lyrics and devotion to bringing this story to life for the world.

Loved Evita last night. I’m a great fan of Emma Hatton after seeing her in Wicked. She didn’t disappoint and gave a superb performance as Eva Peron. Che was played by Gian Marco Schiaretti, he was the narrator and the glue that holds it together. He has an amazing singing voice. The whole cast were superb and the solo performance from a very young girl was heart melting, a star for the future. Well worth a visit.
