How to Find the Right International Travel Insurance Company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

International Travel Insurance FAQs

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

You should pay attention to any limitations regarding covered cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and adventure activities. For example, if you're worried you may have to cancel a trip for work reasons, ensure that you've worked at your company long enough to qualify for cancellation coverage, as that is a condition with some insurers. You should also see if your destination has any travel advisories, as that can affect your policy.

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.

Generali Global Assistance releases U.S. findings of the 2024 Ipsos Holiday Barometer showing Americans want to immerse themselves in local history and culture rather than major tourist spots.

Generali Global Assistance  (“GGA”) today announced the findings from U.S. respondents to the 2024 Holiday Barometer – the annual poll sponsored by its parent company,  Europ Assistance , and conducted by the consumer research firm  Ipsos . The survey was conducted between March 27 and April 22, 2024, in 21 countries.

Based on the survey of 1000 residents of each country, summer travel is close to returning to pre-pandemic levels. Of the U.S. travelers surveyed, 57% say they intend to travel this summer. Interestingly summer travelers are waiting longer to book their travel, likely in an attempt to keep their summer travel options open, with only 39% planning to travel saying they’ve booked their trips.

Chris Carnicelli, CEO of Generali Global Assistance, commented on the findings, “Every year this survey gives us a window into the minds of Americans as they make their summer travel decisions. The rise of ‘slow travel’ is an interesting trend as people are wanting more authentic experiences over the traditional tourism hot spots. There are plenty of places throughout the United States where Americans can take full advantage of a slower pace of travel. While those surveyed said they preferred to travel within the US, it’s important to remember that Americans can experience almost any type of vacation they desire from sunbathing on pristine beaches to taking a challenging climb up a mountain or cooking classes in a major metropolis – all without needing their passport.”

Upcoming Travel Plans

  • 57% of U.S. respondents are planning to travel during the months of June through September, coinciding with the North American summer vacation season.
  • Travel budgets are on the rise amongst Americans with those surveyed planning to spend $4,199 this year – the second highest in the world behind the Swiss.
  • Americans are planning more in advance for the summer travel season, almost 70% of Americans planning to travel this summer reported making their plans at least two months in advance.
  • Americans are still overwhelmingly choosing to travel domestically. Over 50% (56%) of those surveyed said their ideal vacation was within the United States. Only 21% stated a preference for a vacation abroad.
  • While vacationers from the U.S. are still picking beach vacations (49%) over trips to the city (43%) the number of Americans who indicated they would take a tour-style trip (30%) saw an 11% increase year over year.

Travel Trends

  • This year’s survey looks deeper into the type of travel people are looking for. The two travel trends that surveyed Americans preferred were “Slow Travel” and traveling to less classically “touristy” destinations. These preferences were shared in all the regions surveyed.
  • These two preferences seem to be complementary since “Slow Travel” is defined as taking the time to explore local history and culture, while supporting the environment.

Travel Concerns

  • Inflation is the main concern for travelers in all countries, far above other reasons, with it being a top concern among 87% of U.S. travelers.
  • COVID-19 and global armed conflicts are also weighing on the minds of American travelers. Sixty percent of Americans surveyed said these concerns impacted their travel decisions.
  • 42% of Americans surveyed indicated they would be purchasing travel protection to help protect themselves this summer vacation season.

Survey Methodology

The 2024 edition of the Holiday Barometer from Europ Assistance and Ipsos was conducted in 21 countries including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Japan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Australia. In each country, 1,000 consumers aged 18 years and older took part in an online questionnaire. The survey was conducted between March 27 and April 22 and investigated consumer holiday plans and travel preferences.

2024 summer travel trends. 63% of Americans will travel from June - September. Average travel budget: $4199 . 29% plan multiple trips. 45% are happy to travel. 31% excited. 33% are booking 2 to 4 months in advance.. 42% will get travel protection. Travel insurance and assistance services for residents in certain Canadian Provinces

Travel is rewarding, but sometimes things don’t go as expected. People get sick, flights get canceled, and bags go missing. To help protect you financially, there’s travel insurance and assistance services.

Airbnb guests who live in certain Provinces in Canada can add travel insurance and assistance services on the checkout page. The insurance policy is underwritten by Europ Assistance S.A. Canada Branch and offered by Airbnb Canada Insurance Services Inc.

Don’t live in Canada? Travel insurance is also available to residents of the United States , and residents of the United Kingdom and certain countries in the European Union . Reservation insurance is available to residents of France. And guests everywhere purchase travel insurance outside of Airbnb, directly through a travel insurance company’s website or by shopping around on a comparison site.

Adding insurance to your reservation

If your reservation is eligible, you’ll be given the option to add travel insurance and assistance services on the checkout page.

Before adding travel insurance and assistance services to your reservation, be sure to review all the details to make sure it’s right for you.

Shortly after your travel insurance and assistance services purchase is confirmed, you’ll get an email that includes a copy of your insurance policy, as well as a link to your insurance details page, where you cancel your insurance, start a claim, and more.

Making changes to your reservation

Your travel insurance and assistance services plan will be automatically updated if the dates of your reservation or guest count change and there is no claim on the existing policy. If the change impacts the total price of your reservation, you’ll be charged or refunded an adjusted amount for your travel insurance and assistance services.

What's covered

Travel insurance through Europ Assistance covers:

  • Trip cancellation: Get reimbursed for up to 100% of your Airbnb reservation cost if you need to cancel for a covered reason, such as illness, injury, flight cancellation due to weather or mandatory evacuation due to weather.
